There is always reason and logic behind a form.

Design research is a process to find the logical workflows and technics for a meaningful physical output.

Knowledge is there to be shared in order to be expanded.

Education is a means to inspire each other.

SD Magazine is a footprint.

Every journey we take will be documented in this book.

We are not ashamed of sharing unfinished, un-accomplished, un-built.

We believe process is more important than a result.

SD Magazine is a motivation.

A collective effort to make this publication happen every 2 months will motivate our production.

A physical and tangible print will help us intuitively understand the importance of sharing and documentation.

Being able to review our past, will enable us to make better decision for our future.

team Aleksandar Bursać, Daniel Krajnik, ChloÊ Haentjen, Hanjun Kim Cloud Folly is a public installation located in Geumchon Folly Park, Seoul, South Korea. The project is based on the on-going research studying generative form which is driven by series of criteria.

The growth strategy is based on structural principle.

Utilization of multi-agent system allowed to generate geometry which is driven by sets of functional criteria as well as series of structural principle.

Truncated octahedron is selected as base geometry of the main component in order to ease the construction.

This naturally allowed the system to be able to construct a multi-dimensional growth system within a 3 dimensionally packed grid.

project by Zhen Shan, Mengying Li, Wenjian Yang, Shaoru Wang SpaceStream is a project which aims to explore the

influence of rule-based design systems on low-tech fabrication technique of welding. The research concentrates on wireframe structures, which

are strengthened through subdivision of basic

geometrical units and bundling and reinforcing of the main structural strands. The custom software

used for this project is Centredon Dijkstra’s shortest path algorithm in combination with agent-based modelling techniques.

As the application was being developed in parallel with the design project, the software itself went through several iterations. In the end, all of the design elements are tested synthetically as an

architectural proposal – the ‘stream house’ –which

manifests the structural and aesthetic properties by showcasing the 3D structural flows branching and transitioning seamlessly from vertical columns, to

horizontal elements (floors, ceilings) and staircases, while forming the structural support as well as

unifying all building elements into one coherent design.

Starting from the thought that we can use a 3D

printing to create design by printing pieces instead

research aimed to create an easily available and low cost fabrication method, using less material in the

printing process. The best way to achieve this result is by printing shapes that don’t require the help of

supports to be printed which means printing pieces in which the hight is not predominant. Starting

from these “flat” printed pieces the research focuses its attention on developing a moulding technique that forges a flat 3D printing in a tridimensional

shape. The techniques itself changes according to

In this case we have used different types of

filament, from carbon fibre to ABS to PLA and we found out that every filament requires a different

type of heating tool, that’s because of their different melting point, so the oven might be better for

higher melting points (ABS and PLA with lower

temperatures) while the iron works better for lower melting points (Caron Fibre).

This Project comes from the aggragation of cells, fixed together with glue. The interesting thing about this project is that it starts from a 2D (every pieces of the

cells) form in order to make a Three dimensional object. The material used in order to realize this structure is the PLA and every pieces was print in the AA lab with

Ultimaker 2.0 printer. With the Shortest walk algorithm was discover how the forces work in the final structure and where it needs to be stable, for this reason some piesces present more lines than others.

LIQUID COLUMN Resin Printing

2017. 10 -

team Marita Madio, Hanjun Kim The project referred to an old series of experiments

of form generated by fluid flows. We started to print the mesh from fluid flows with resin. The results of the first printing was good, so we decided to

transform the whole project into a lamp. However,

we have a difficulty to divide the mesh to put in the Form 1+ printing boundary due to the size of the columns.

After printing, the mould will be made up by using

these resin printings to make porcelain lamp shade.

We will fix the result with filler first to make smooth finish , then planning to use silicone to make mould.

The project is still on going.

The following pictures are the pieces used for the Folly project. These pieces have been combined

MARITA MADIO Work Period

Architectural Visualiser Born in Bari, Italy in 1984 Madio studied

Architecture at the Politecnico di Bari where

she completed her architectural studies with a

experimental thesis on “The minor historical centers in a state of neglect, problems of protection and enhancement: Restoration of medieval town

of Craco (MT)” for which she won a Honorable Mention Prize in Camerino. After a year of

Architectural Intern at “esseelle associati” where she was involved from conception to design

development stage with technical drawings and perspective renderings, she moved to Venice in

2016 to attend the postgraduate Master Course

in Digital Architecture (Madi) at the University of

Venice (Iuav) mainly based on visualization, video animation, rapid prototyping and laser scanning

(parametric modeling, 3d scan & print, Arduino &

coding). She is passionate about collage illustration and photography, as she attended a class of

Architecture and Landscapes Photography called Lab/6 curated by Michele Cera at Polytechnic

University of Bari. She is also carrying out her own

reserch on the application of computational design in fashion.
