You can help ensure that we stay on course. There are amendments to our governing documents that will be put before the Congress in July. After having led SAR for nearly a year, I am more convinced than ever that these changes are necessary and overdue. We cannot hope to avoid the financial disaster of 2023 if we do not insist on a professional in the role of Treasurer General (our chief financial officer). We cannot hope to raise our organization’s profile if we do not have a PG with the skills and the time to engage with the public and important external stakeholders. In the end, it’s up to you whether we move forward toward a more promising future or … not.

During the first few months of 2026, I attended numerous events on your behalf. Several chapters and states had amazing programs with significant community involvement. In February, Virginia’s George Washington Chapter arranged for your President General and DAR President General Ginnie Storage to serve as grand marshals of Alexandria’s George Wasington’s Birthday Parade. That same weekend, I presented the Distinguished Patriotic

Leadership Award to the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association at Mount Vernon’s Birthnight Ball. Julie and I had fun while also taking center stage for our organization at two highprofile public events.

In March, I attended the dedication of the First Amphibious Assault Monument in Pompano Beach, Fla., where numerous community leaders spoke at the Marine Corps League-supported event. Perhaps next year, we’ll re-invade the Bahamas to try to top this year’s event! In April, the 250th anniversary of the Halifax Resolves in Halifax, N.C., was an enormous success. We welcomed North Carolina’s governor, the Hon. Josh Stein, as a member of the SAR. Speaking of North Carolina … Once again, I invite you to join us in Greensboro, N.C., in July for our 136th Congress.

It’s going to be our best Congress yet.

Letters to the Editor I much enjoyed reading the article by Mr. Jeffrey Addicott starting on page 24 of the Winter 2025-2026 issue of SAR Magazine, until I got to the last paragraph on page 24 that spilled over to the top of page 25. Ostensibly, this paragraph by Mr. Addicott expresses his personal view of present times, taking a distinct political stance.

I assumed that the SAR organization and magazine, were apolitical, thereby serving ALL SAR members. ... If SAR strives to be apolitical, I suggest that SAR Magazine publish a note in the next issue referencing this article, indicating “the position advocated by the author is his own and does not reflect the SAR, which is apolitical.”

This has been an exciting and challenging year. We have made a great deal of progress and continue to move the SAR forward even while focusing on celebrating the 250th anniversary of our great nation!

The progress we have made over the past nine months has been fantastic. We still have a long way to go to meet our goals, but most importantly, we are headed in the right direction.

Over the past few months, the Executive Leadership has been very busy. I included topics that have been discussed and acted on by the Executive Committee for your review in this magazine. We want to maintain transparency with you, our members.

One of the most important changes at Spring Leadership was the passing of a motion adding two new LLCs to the organization. This motion alters the structure of the SAR and it is important for everyone to understand why this was done. As you know, we are in the process of completing the buildout of the Education Center and Museum that will be an operating entity for the SAR. To protect the assets of our organization in case of a catastrophic event, it was necessary to create two new LLCs which will both be owned by the SAR. Below is a diagram of the new structure.

Executive Committee Reports Jan. 25, 2026 – Approved Motions 1. Approved movement of $78,000 from the Alexander Hamilton fund to the Operating Account to pay for the merger of the Red database into the Blue Database.

2. Approved the change to award certificates for the year 2026 to honor the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Effective with all national awards and certificates for Feb. 1-Dec. 31, 2026.

3. Approved the SAR Independence 250th Medal as submitted.

Feb. 22, 2026 – Approved Motions 1. Approved a no cost contract with Ancestry.com to include an index of the PRS as a database on Ancestry.com. The links on Ancestry would drive traffic to the specific Patriot on the PRS. 2. Approved the SAR Gold Medal of Appreciation for C.A.R. National President Reese Holmes. Effective with all national awards and certificates for Feb. 1-Dec. 31, 2026.

3. Approved the SAR Gold Medal of Appreciation to Mr. Jeffrey Flick of the New Hampshire SAR for his exemplary service.

4. Approved the SAR Gold Medal of Appreciation to Jim Holmes, the current C.A.R. Senior National President.

5. Approved a moratorium on National Medals from March 7, 2026, Spring Leadership, until July 7, 2028, on any new National Awards to assess how well the present medals are being utilized within the Society. This moratorium does not include the following awards: Special Service and Commemorative Medals in relation to the America 250th Decade Medals, Commemorative Medals for the President General’s Annual Trip, Congress Commemorative Medals, and state-level award proposals. The President General, at his discretion, can also request that the committee take up a National Award if necessary.

March 5, 2026 – Approved Motions 1. Approved the SPOF Distribution per the 2026 distribution schedule.

2. Approved to make a motion to the Trustees to carry out the sale of memberships in July 2026.

3. Recommend that the Trustees approve the structure as outlined by the outside legal counsel to form subsidiary LLC companies for the SAR Education Center and Museum operation and SAR Real Estate Holdings.

4. Approved the change in investment advisor from Fifth Third to UBS effective no later than June 30, 2026.

5. Recommended approval to the Trustees of the Investment Policy guidelines presented.

6. Approved the Support Process for Mobile Booth application to track leads.

7. Adopted a motion authorizing the Chancelor General to prepare letters regarding a membership issue consistent with discussion in the Executive session.

March 7, 2026 – Approved Motions 1. Approved to move forward with the purchase of the Sage Intact software with the 3–5-year purchase plan with the cost not to exceed $250,000.

2. Postponed Communications motions until the March 29 meeting.

3. Moved that the EC approve the change to the engraved and printed certificates for the Eagle Scout Program upon exhaustion of the current certificates that the wording on the certificates be changed from “his attainment” to “by attaining the rank of” and the medal changed from the one with the BSA insignia on it to the new one from Scouting America which does not haves the BSA on it.

5. Approved the Gold Good Citizenship for Gen. Hugh Shelton.

From the Desk of …

Brooks Lyles Treasurer General

We should all be proud of what the SAR has accomplished over the past 22 months, but there is much to be done. We cannot afford to become complacent or rest on our laurels. We have eliminated our debt, increased our operating reserves and are now operating in the black. We have moved closer to the opening of the SAR’s Education Center and Museum, implemented national liability insurance (including black-powder coverage) for all societies and chapters, and upgraded our accounting system to a modern platform capable of interfacing with our other tools.

Furthermore, we have improved merchandise inventory management, transitioned our investment advisory services to UBS and moved our local banking operations to Republic Bank. These decisions were made to increase efficiency, decrease expenses and fulfill promises made to the membership—in short, they were decisions made to move the SAR forward.

In this issue of SAR Magazine, you will find the first-ever NSSAR Annual Report. This report details how we executed the missions stated in our Operational and Strategic Plans against the 2025 Annual Budget and concludes with a brief outlook for 2026. It is my firm belief that we need to be as transparent as possible regarding our finances. When compatriots see how their dues and fees are being used and recognize that those funds are being well and responsibly managed, they are far more likely to want to remain active and engaged members. Ultimately, isn’t retaining membership and growing the SAR the key enabler to executing our historical, educational and patriotic missions nationwide?

From my desk, this is what progress looks like. We are moving the organization forward, while keeping an eye on the 10-year planning horizon. We still have much to do.

There are generational challenges out there we will have to address, such as requiring checks for dues payment versus providing online payment options. We must find solutions that satisfy both our older members who do not have a

digital footprint and our younger members who do not have checking accounts. And we will. We will do it while taking care of membership and continually moving the organization forward, never backward!

So, what are the major items we are tackling at National beyond the completion and opening of the Education Center and Museum? Three stand out: 1) A National Dues Billing System, 2) A Paperless Application Process, and 3) Digitization of the SAR’s Membership Records and Supporting Documentation.

There is a common thread connecting these tasks—a prerequisite we must address before the others become feasible: developing a relational membership database that enables interface across all domains. This is the primary hurdle in developing an executable Information Technology (IT) architecture that would serve as the framework for integration of current and future systems and will be the key to building a functional IT environment rather than extending what we have now.

We cannot continue to talk about it while we throw good money after bad, continuing to patch and tweak a system that is already on life support. This is not doom and gloom but my thoughts on what we need to do next. Kudos to the members of the IT Committee who have kept the current systems up and running, but it is time to take the next step, and I don’t think it can be an evolutionary one. It might be painful, but a revolutionary leap is required to position ourselves for future success.

To that end, I’m putting out a call to membership for volunteers with IT backgrounds and the skills to help move us forward. It was 250 years ago that Gen. George Washington went to Congress to get enlistments in the Continental Army extended from one year to “Three Years or the Duration of the Conflict, whichever comes first.” We need the same infusion of younger compatriots with current IT skill sets to help us in our IT Modernization effort, not for just for six months or a year, but for “Three Years or the Duration of the Project, whichever comes first.”

And, if you share my vision but lack the specific IT skills to volunteer, you can help us by donating to the IT Special Purpose Fund. These donations will supplement the annuity income generated by the Alexander Hamilton IT Fund, which currently finances our IT projects.

Cleanup on aisle 3!

We had a successful 2025 in application approval. Chapter registrars and genealogists diligently worked to document each fact displayed on the application. That, plus the stellar work of our staff genealogists, made the 98 percent approval rate for new applications a dream come true for the SAR. Now for the aisle 3 concerns: retention, digitizing supporting documentation, memorial applications and youth awards. Retention is the SAR’s No. 1 problem.

Although I thank all of you reading this for sustaining your membership—we can pat ourselves on the back that approximately 89 percent of our members renewed—I am concerned that all of the great work in finding and approving new members is bluntly negated by the 4,000 members who drop annually.

We successfully established a “Field of Dreams” model, i.e., if we build it, they will come! For example, great meetings, excellent speakers, expanded color guard and involvement of those who attend. What are we missing?

The answer is a focus on those members who cannot or will not come to the meetings. Each member is essential to spreading the good word about the SAR’s mission: honoring our Revolutionary War Patriot Ancestors by promoting patriotism, serving our communities, and educating and inspiring future generations about the founding principles of our country.

How we do that could be summed up with the message that we care! Let’s take the time to call, write and send messages to each member who is not at our meetings. I was advised by one leader that he did not have time to do that. If not the leader, then whom should we ask to

accomplish this concept?

Let’s expand the mentor program. Let’s ask everyone who attends a chapter meeting to call or write a personal note to at least five members of the chapter who did not attend the last meeting. Offer a review of the topics covered in the meeting, ask if there any personal concerns about which the chapter should know, and develop a relationship.

Send a copy of the meeting minutes to everyone in the chapter, as well as those who were dropped from the previous five years. Let’s start that now and not wait until September when we ask them to pay their dues.

Supporting documentation needs to be digitized. One suggestion has been to start submitting the documentation electronically to be reviewed by the genealogy staff during the approval of applications. We are piloting a program that uses the current online application as the way to coordinate sending the documentation digitally and connecting it to the paper application, plus the fees and dues required. More to come.

Memorial applications were altered by Congress in 2025, leading to multiple adjustments to the Genealogy Committee Policies as well as the Application Preparation Guide. The Genealogy Committee will continue to prepare the requested guidance as we address future concerns.

The Council of Youth Awards has been tasked with adjusting the outward presentation of the youth awards and changing the names on our website to the SAR Brochure, Essay, Oration, Eagle Scout and American History Teacher. This should make it easier for participants to recognize the possibility of a competition.

We will still honor those who have been traditionally recognized by the SAR, to include Sgt. Moses Adams, George and Stella Knight, Joseph S. Rumbaugh, Arthur M. and Berdena King, and Dr. Tom and Betty Lawrence, when we present the awards.

Completing the cleanup on aisle 3, we know that approval of applications is moving in a positive direction.

Retention needs emphasis, and digitizing supporting documentation has been a work in progress for a long time.

We need to execute now.

We need to focus on retention, digitizing supporting documentation, memorial applications and youth awards, with retention at the top of the list, as it is the SAR’s No. 1 problem.

As we continue to process year-end numbers and reconciliation data, the news continues to be rather good.

According to the Strategic Plan, our goal is to establish a 3 percent annual net membership growth by 2028, and we are making progress, with an estimated growth rate of 2 percent in 2025. We fell a bit short of our 90 percent retention goal, with only 89 percent in the previous year. This is an ongoing concern and emphasizes the need for every compatriot and officer to actively work to gather in the lost sheep and intentionally encourage those who do participate.

The area where our goal is vastly exceeded is in the growth of Junior Members. The Strategic Plan calls for a 5 percent increase per year. In 2025, our Junior Membership grew by 25.1 percent! Our self-identity as a society of “old men” must be revised. Youth and young adults are rediscovering (or perhaps discovering for the first time) a love of country and the exhilaration of patriotism.

Now is the time to capitalize on this momentum. The 250th Anniversary is upon us but does not end with the July 4th celebrations. The Decade of the Revolution continues and promises to raise awareness in the founding of our great nation. We are the organization with the answers, that knows the history and keeps the flame of patriotism alive.

I am pleased to announce that the new Prospective Lead Program is live! The concept is simple. One QR code is now the starting point for all prospective members. If you host a booth at a fair, hand out cards after a parade, or introduce the SAR in an elevator, one QR code will allow us to capture contact information. Most importantly, it will allow us to track each prospective lead and tie him with key state and district individuals. Multiple SAR officers at multiple levels allow us to follow up on missed calls and unopened emails. We recommend adding the QR code to all flyers, brochures and business cards. Help us spread the word.

The final data analysis of the April 2025 New Member application fee sale is complete. We are pleased to report the sale was much more successful than anticipated. There were 830 participating applications with an additional 250 family plan applications. Of those, 20 applications were pended, approximately 250 were submitted after Sept. 1, 2025 (and would not need to pay additional dues this cycle), and only 187 did not renew their dues. The result was a 79 percent renewal rate!

The National Society executed its strategic plan and operational plan for 2025 within its $2.6 million budget and significantly reduced its reliance on the line of credit with no balance outstanding at year end. Stagnant membership growth and inflationary pressures present challenges to fulfilling our mission and investing in technologies that reduce operational costs. Fundraising for the SAR Museum and Education Center remains the key strategic initiative. The 2024 and 2025 financial information in this report is based on the format used for the Annual Budget. Members can view audited and interim financial reports on a GAAP basis, including contributions and investment income and program expenses, at www. sar.org/quicklinks/financial statements.

New member applications for 2025 increased by 1,051 applications, or 31.3 percent over 2024. This was due, in large part, to the $75 application fee discount offered on new applications submitted in the month of April 2025. If these new compatriots retain their membership in 2026 and beyond, then the discount will be recovered as they make their annual dues payments.

M E MBERSH IP Membership increased in 2025, reversing a five-year declining trend. This is primarily due to an increase in applications from the April 2025 application sale and interest in the celebration of America 250. Increases in new members are offset by an average of 3,100 compatriots who allow their membership to lapse each year, yielding an annual drop rate of about 9 percent. Also, about 800 compatriots pass away each year, further decreasing membership by about 2 percent annually.

The Trustees approved a fee increase for new-member applications and for supplemental applications to $150 effective August 2024, an increase from the $100 set in July 2021. The fee increase did not appear to influence new applications received in 2025. However, the fee increase, combined with a large backlog, contributed to a reduction in the number of supplemental applications submitted in 2025, which were down 26 percent compared to 2024.

S TA F F IN G The NSSAR employs 25.3 full-time and part-time staff members to execute the operations of the organization.

To address budget shortfalls resulting from declining membership and inflation, the Trustees increased annual dues in 2023 to $50, an increase from $35 which was set in 2015. Membership dues remained at $50 for 2026.

2 0 2 5 A N N UA L R E P O R T continued Staffing is budgeted on a Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) basis to account for the part-time hours worked in several departments. Total staffing for 2026 is essentially the same as 2025.

Investment revenue was 173 percent higher than in 2024.

A strong market in 2025 produced favorable returns for the invested funds the NSSAR manages within the well-defined guidelines of its investment policy.

OPERAT IN G REVENUE

O P E RAT IN G E XP E N S E S

Total Operating Revenue for the NSSAR in 2025 was $2,950,581, which was $421,595 higher (17 percent) than the 2024 Operating Revenue. Membership dues were 3 percent lower than dues collected in 2024 because fewer compatriots renewed their membership. Application fees were 37 percent higher than the prior year because of a $50 increase in application fees, effective in August 2024, and because of an increase in new member applications in 2025.

A $75 discount was offered on new member applications submitted in April 2025, which drove an increase in new applications in that month. Supplemental application revenue was down 30 percent from the previous year, driven by the increase in application fees and a long backlog for approvals.

Merchandise operations are reflected in the financial statements as revenue net of cost of goods sold. Net merchandise operations were 51 percent higher than 2024, driven by new offerings. Merchandise costs increased due to inflationary pressures, but merchandise prices to SAR compatriots were held steady for most of 2025.

Total Operating Expenses for the National Society in 2025 were $2.3 million, which was $241,656 lower (9 percent) than the 2024 operating expenses.

Administrative expenses were 17 percent lower than the 2024 expenses due to temporary staffing vacancies and adjustments to job duties at Headquarters. The National Society also secured general liability insurance for all societies and chapters starting in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Genealogy expenses were 8 percent higher than in 2024, primarily because the Genealogy department had open positions in 2024 that were fully staffed in 2025.

Building and maintenance expenses increased 92 percent compared to 2024, primarily driven by a significant increase in utility rates at Headquarters in Louisville, Ky. Magazine expenses are reflected in the financial net of advertising revenue. Magazine expenses were essentially flat compared to 2024, due to advertising revenue keeping pace with inflationary cost increases.

Surpluses of revenue in excess of operating expenses are directed to increasing the Operating Reserve and/or decreasing seasonal reliance on the Line of Credit. During

2025, the Operating Reserve was increased by $50,000 to $100,000, and the Line of Credit balance was reduced by $375,000 to a $0 balance at year end.

I NV EST MEN T S The NSSAR manages funds in several investment accounts that support initiatives critical to the SAR Mission. These funds are invested according to policies defined by the Investment Committee and are regularly reviewed by the Board of Trustees.

The Invested Fund Account holds funds for several programs supporting SAR education initiatives, Special Purpose Operating Funds and general operating expenses.

Donations to these various programs are regularly accepted and contribute to fund growth in addition to investment returns. In 2025, the Invested Fund Account grew by $1.24 million to $11.3 million and reported a return of 12.0 percent.

The George Washington Endowment Fund awards grants to chapters and state societies that are implementing projects or programs that promote the SAR’s mission.

Donations grow the principal balance of the fund, which is never spent. A portion of the investment income is retained to grow the principal balance of the fund, and the remainder is distributed as grants for qualified requests.

The George Washington Endowment Fund grew by $164,386 to $3.18 million and reported a return of 7.3 percent.

The Education Center & Museum Fund holds donations received for the construction of this key strategic project. As construction phases are approved, funds are released to pay for construction. In 2024, the Trustees approved Phase I construction, so this fund balance has declined during 2025, as construction has been completed.

At year end, the fund had a balance of $2.4 million and reported a return of 3.8 percent.

The Roger Ruth Fund and the Restricted Fund are special purpose funds. The Roger Ruth Fund grew by $9,655 to $69,946 and reported a return of 16.2 percent.

The Restricted Fund grew by $10,857 to $135,873 and reported a return of 14.1 percent.

CA P ITA L P RO J E C T S In 2015, the SAR Foundation began raising funds for the construction of the SAR Education Center and Museum (EC&M). The EC&M will be located adjacent to SAR Headquarters and the SAR Library in Louisville and will feature digital displays, multi-media productions and exhibits from the SAR Archival Collection. In 2022, the Trustees approved design plans for the EC&M and approved the first phase of construction in 2024.

To date, donations and grants received for the project have totaled approximately $12 million, which funded the main exhibits of the EC&M and will launch the museum in 2026. The total cost of the EC&M project is projected to be approximately $25 million for all phases of construction.

Future phases of construction for additional exhibits will be approved as sufficient funds are raised to complete them. The EC&M will have an operating budget funded by the SAR Foundation and EC&M operations that is wholly separate from the SAR Operating Budget.

The National Society is pursuing a strategic initiative to implement systems that will enable paperless applications, integrate membership data and facilitate national dues billing. These capabilities will automate many manual processes, improve communication with our compatriot members, and curb the growth of operating expenses. The projected cost of the initiative is $1.2 million.

Phases to consolidate the old membership database and upgrade the accounting system have been funded and are underway. In 2026, a capital campaign will be launched to raise funds for these important and transformative projects.

2026 O UT LO O K For 2026, total Operating Revenue is budgeted at $2.7 million, and total Operating Expenses are budgeted at $2.6 million. The budgeted surplus of $81,340 will be directed to increasing the Operating Reserve.

The 2026 operating budget is based on a projection of membership renewals, new member applications and supplemental applications, using recent trends. Operating expenses are managed to achieve a balanced budget with a modest surplus. Membership growth is essential to support the SAR’s programs and to avoid increases to dues and applications fees in the future.

Membership as of Jan. 1, 2026, is estimated to be 33,837, pending final reconciliation. The initiatives in the SAR Strategic Plan are focused on building a consistent trend of healthy membership growth for chapters and state societies.

All compatriots are encouraged to review the Strategic Plan and implement programs in their local chapters that retain our compatriot members, recruit and onboard new members, and celebrate the spirit of the American Revolution in our communities.

The South Atlantic District

he South Atlantic District commemorated the 249th Anniversary of the Revolutionary War Battle of Thomas Creek (the Southmost Battle of the American Revolutionist War) and the 250th National Anniversary ceremony on March 28.

David Ramseur welcomed the attendees to the 11th annual event on a windy, beautiful and cool day for the ceremony at the battle location on Seaton Creek Historic Preservation Park in Jacksonville, Fla. Attendance was great again with SAR compatriots, DAR daughters and C.A.R. children plus guests estimated at 150.

For this National Color Guard Event, we were honored to have our Past National Color Guard Commander Scott Collins, who commanded a 28-man color guard. Greetings were given by the City of Jacksonville, NSSAR VPG Matt Mathews, Florida SAR State President Chris Washler, Georgia SAR Past State President Scott Collins and South Carolina SAR Color Guard Cmdr. Scott Bruton. Greetings

also were given by FSSDAR Regent Kim Zeman, DAR N.E. Regents Council Judy Woodberry and FSSC.A.R. State President Jaelyn Tillman. Compatriot Dr. Bob Amason gave an enthusiastic overview presentation on the Revolutionary War events leading to the battle of Thomas Creek.

Those attending the commemoration were encouraged to register for the Alligator Bridge ceremony on June 20.

This battle was the third failed attempt after the Thomas Creek Battle to make Northeast Florida the 14th Colony, as ordered by Gen. George Washington We are looking forward to next year’s Thomas Creek Ceremony to be held at the Seaton Creek Historic Preservation Park on March 27, 2027, as we continue to honor our Patriot Ancestors during this year’s 250th Nation’s Birthday Anniversary.

$2.5 Million Awarded to Support Buildout of

SAR Education Center and Museum

he National Society SAR is proud to announce that the Commonwealth of Kentucky has awarded $2.5 million in funding to support the completion of the SAR Education Center and Museum, located at 809 West Main Street in downtown Louisville.

The funding was included in the Commonwealth’s newly passed two-year budget under the House Bill 500 Kentucky budget bill, approved by both the Kentucky Senate and House of Representatives.

This investment marks a significant step forward in bringing the SAR’s vision of a premier educational and historical destination to life. The SAR Education Center and Museum will serve as a dynamic space dedicated to preserving and sharing the story of the American Revolution and its enduring impact. Located in the heart of Louisville’s Museum Row, the facility will offer immersive exhibits, educational programming and research opportunities designed to engage visitors of all ages.

Beyond its impact on downtown Louisville, the Education Center and Museum will serve as a national resource. Through the SAR’s extensive network of local chapters across the country, educational initiatives and materials developed at the center will reach students and SPRING 2026

educators nationwide, helping to foster a deeper understanding of America’s founding principles.

“This funding represents a significant investment in civic education, historic preservation and the future of our country,” said Michael J. Elston, President General of the SAR. “The SAR Education Center and Museum will not only enhance Louisville’s cultural landscape but also serve as a beacon of learning for students across Kentucky and throughout the United States.”

SAR Executive Director Phil Bloyd added, “We are deeply grateful to the Kentucky General Assembly and state leadership for recognizing the importance of this project. This support brings us closer to completing a facility that will inspire curiosity, promote American history and connect communities to the legacy of the American Revolution.”

Once completed, the SAR Education Center and Museum is expected to draw visitors from across the region and beyond, contributing to Louisville’s tourism economy while expanding access to high-quality educational resources. The project underscores the SAR’s ongoing commitment to education, historic preservation and patriotism as the nation approaches the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution.

Connecting With Those Who Shaped Our Country

S

tanding in the space that will soon become the SAR Education Center and Museum, you can’t help but feel the weight of what this represents.

This is more than a building. It is a commitment to preserving the stories of the men and women whose courage and sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy today and to ensuring those stories are not only remembered but truly experienced by future generations.

Every detail within this museum has been thoughtfully designed to bring history to life. From immersive exhibits to carefully curated timelines, each gallery offers an opportunity to connect with the individuals and moments that shaped our nation’s founding.

What makes this project truly remarkable is the role our members and supporters play in bringing it to life.

As fundraising manager, I have the privilege of working directly with donors to help them find meaningful ways to be part of this legacy. For many, that begins with the 1776 Society—a longstanding tradition of recognition within the

SAR. With the museum’s opening on the horizon, there is a renewed sense of excitement and urgency surrounding this program, as it represents one of the final opportunities to be permanently recognized within this historic space through the quill display.

For others, the opportunity lies in naming specific areas of the museum. Whether it’s a gallery, an exhibit, or a digital experience, these spaces allow donors to connect their personal history to the broader story of the American Revolution.

Recently, I had the opportunity to work with a member who was deeply passionate about honoring one of his qualifying patriots. He shared the story of his ancestor’s role in the fight for independence, a story that had been passed down through generations but never formally recognized in a way that could be shared with others.

Together, we identified a space within the museum that aligned with that patriot’s contribution. What began as a conversation about giving quickly became something more meaningful. Together, we created a way to ensure that his ancestor’s story would live on, not only within his family but as part of the larger narrative experienced by every visitor who walks through the museum.

These are the moments that make this work so impactful. Every conversation is different.

Every story matters.

There are also ways to support the museum that extend beyond one’s lifetime. Planned giving, including gifts through a will or qualified charitable distributions, allows members to make a lasting impact while aligning with their broader financial and estate plans. For many of Every detail within the museum has been thoughtfully designed to bring history to life.

ALABAMA SAR Cheaha Chapter At the chapter’s January meeting at the Anniston/ Calhoun County Public Library, speaker Rev. Jeff Coker presented “Why I Have So Many Supplementals.”

ARIZONA SAR The AZSSAR held its 250th anniversary gala on Feb. 7 in Scottsdale with a menu of foods found in a 1776 tavern.

Attendees heard about the Declaration of Independence.

The Secretary of State, who is also chair of the 250th Commission, attended and gave an update on the state’s plans to take a replica of the Liberty Bell on a statewide tour.

This group effort reflects the strong partnership among our organizations as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding. The eagles—powerful symbols of freedom, strength and perseverance—stood proudly as a visual reminder of the shared values that unite the sons, daughters, children and Ladies Auxiliary.

CASSAR President John Ferris and LACASSAR President Liz Ferris worked alongside fellow members during the day, showing the importance of cooperation across societies and generations. SAR members also volunteered their time and talents during the work session, including VP South Brandon Villardi, Color Guard Cmdr.

Tucson Chapter The main event in Tucson is the 101-year-old Fiesta de los Vaqueros Rodeo Parade, which is held every February at the start of Rodeo season. It is the largest non-mechanized (read horse-drawn) parade in the country, if not the world.

In keeping with the theme of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the chapter conducted the flag ceremony and led the parade on Feb. 26. The chapter color guard was joined by AZSSAR President Jack Berry, several members of the state color guard who drove long distances, stalwart members from all the Tucson DAR chapters and teenager Jack Sluets from the Presidio Garrison. In all, 21 marched the 2-mile route, with 12 flags commemorating the proud history of national flags over the last 250 years. All were in Revolutionary War uniforms or period garb (it is so much fun marching in wool uniforms in bright sun and near 90 degrees!). Weather was perfect, however, for the 15,000 onlookers and the 200,000 who watched on TV. We can all now say, “This is not our first rodeo!”

CALIFORNIA SAR On Dec. 20, 2025, members of the CASSAR, DAR, C.A.R. and LACASSAR (Ladies Auxiliary California Society SAR) united for a special workday to begin decorating the three magnificent eagle figures that served as a centerpiece of the America 250 float for the Rose Bowl Parade.

PPP In a star-studded night in Hollywood, the CASSAR Color Guard proudly marched beside the Army Rangers Association in the 93rd Hollywood Christmas Parade, one of the largest and most widely viewed holiday parades in the nation.

The SAR Color Guard was honored to be joined by President General Michael J. Elston, who marched the full 3-mile route alongside the unit. Also marching with the contingent was CASSAR President John Ferris, with the unit commanded by Past State Color Guard Commander Brandon Villardi, currently VP South. This year’s guard brought together a unified team of members from nine 23

SAR chapters and two C.A.R. societies, demonstrating the strong cooperation between the SAR and C.A.R. as America approaches its 250th anniversary.

The 3-mile parade route was lined with an estimated 1 million spectators, with more than 10 million viewers tuning in to the nationally televised broadcast. This year’s Grand Marshal was actor Luke Wilson, adding even more excitement to the iconic Southern California tradition.

In addition to the color guard, several non-uniformed members, families and spouses assisted parade staff by managing the massive, 40-foot Toy Soldier balloon. Special thanks to Kelly Villardi, Sheri Dalton, Jenni Jouan, Liz Ferris, Rhys Dalton and Gloria Noell for their outstanding support.

A special thank you also goes to Compatriot Rev. James Richardson of the Sons of Liberty Chapter, as well as Joey Gatton of the Army Rangers Association, whose invaluable assistance in organizing, coordinating and guiding logistics helped make this year’s participation possible.

During the event, an official SAR 250 Minute was delivered by Kern Chapter Member Bruce Wearda, marking another important contribution to America’s upcoming 250th anniversary commemorations.

COLORADO SAR On Feb. 13, members of the Colorado SAR and DAR societies participated with the Colorado Core Knowledge Network for its annual conference at the Liberty School in Fort Collins, celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with 350 professional educators attending. The presentations showed the depth of our members’ knowledge and allowed us to invite the many educators to schedule further Patriot Chest presentations at their schools.

Steve DeBoer, Chip Dawes and Rob Hampton presented the British abuses that led to our Bill of Rights. Susie Weart, Jewell Wellborn and Bob Guy discussed education and life in Colonial times.

DELAWARE SAR Caesar Rodney Chapter The Caesar Rodney Chapter participated in a recent “Revolutionary War Day” in Smyrna, Dela.

The event marked the attempted kidnapping of Two members of the Youth Color Brig. Gen. (later Guard and Chaplain Rev. Dr. John Riley and Chapter Vice governor) Thomas President Steve Dietrich at the event.

Major Peter Jaquet Chapter The chapter held a Patriot Grave Marking in the City of New Castle this past fall.

The chapter marked the grave of William Sanders, a corporal in the Maryland Line, who lived to be 99 years old. He is buried at the New Castle Methodist Church.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA SAR The 111th Joint Celebration of George Washington’s Birthday was hosted by the District of Columbia Society C.A.R. on Feb. 21. The event, co-sponsored by the DC and the DCSAR, was held at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va. The Mistress of Ceremony was DCC.A.R President Avery Hinzman. Following the opening rituals and introductions, greetings were offered by DCDAR State Regent Yvonne Liser and DCSAR President Geoffrey Newman.

After brunch, cast members from DCC.A.R. presented a skit about the young life of George Washington. The presentation was well received by the nearly 150 event guests.

President Newman welcomed new SAR members and gave them their oath. Theodore Roosevelt Kramer III is the fifth great-grandson of Robert Barclay, who served as a private in the North Carolina Militia. Zachary Logan Barnett and Brant Henry Boozier are the fifth great-grandsons of Private Jonathan Farrington of the Massachusetts Militia. Welcomed in absentia was Ryland Clay Norman, the fifth great-grandson of Thaddeus Granger, a private in the Massachusetts Militia.

FLORIDA SAR Clearwater Chapter On Feb. 10, Clearwater compatriots presented the winners of the chapter-level SAR Youth Video Contest awards at St. Cecelia Parochial School. The first-place winners were Katriana Witt, Elizabeth Pedraza and Susana Ramos, who received $500 for their video, “Deborah Sampson, The Woman Soldier.”

students, who were studying the American Revolution at the time. The students gathered in groups of three or four, selected topics pertaining to a person or event of the American Revolution and researched sources as they prepared their video. As Mrs. Heinze suspected, the Youth Video Contest offered a wonderful educational opportunity.

Seven videos for consideration came from Mrs. Heinze’s class. They were on a variety of topics, and four won cash awards totaling $1,000.

Flagler Chapter During the height of World War II, on Feb. 3, 1943, a troop carrier ship loaded with 900 soldiers and sailors was heading to Greenland when a German torpedo struck. As the ship sank, panic set in among the men, many of whom had no life jackets. Among these men were four new Army chaplains: Methodist Minister the Rev. George L. Fox, Reform Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Catholic Priest Father John P. Washington and Reformed Church in America minister the Rev. Clark V. Poling. The chaplains helped the other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their life jackets when the supply ran out. The chaplains joined arms, said prayers and sang hymns as they went down with the ship and drowned.

Four Chaplains Day ceremonies and services are held each year on or around Feb. 3 by numerous military and civilian groups and organizations. In 1998, Feb. 3 was established by Senate Resolution 169–98 as Four Chaplains Day to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the sinking of the U.S. Army Dorchester and the subsequent heroism of these men.

At this year’s ceremony, hosted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Chapter 8696 on Feb. 7, in Palm Coast, Fla., members of the Flagler SAR Chapter were invited to attend and participate in the color guard portion of the ceremony. Among the attendees were the mayor of 25

Palm Coast and other community leaders. Flagler Chapter President Randy Conway, Charlie Hayes, Jeff Schaller, John Feind and David Watt participated in the color guard.

Fort Lauderdale The Fort Lauderdale Chapter entered 2026 with momentum, expanding membership and active community engagement. Chapter membership grew from 78 at the start of 2025 to 89 members as 2026 began. The chapter is also expanding its educational outreach through youth programs that promote American history and civic understanding while supporting national preparations for the upcoming America 250 Semiquincentennial.

The chapter hosted the FLSSAR Southeast Regional Meeting on Jan. 10. Chris Washler, FLSSAR president, joined nearly 30 compatriots and representatives from the Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Palm Beach chapters.

During the meeting, President Washler installed the Fort Lauderdale Chapter’s 2026 officers, provided updates on state and national initiatives, and presented Florida Veterans Service Recognition Medals and Florida Veterans Brigade certificates.

On Jan. 11, the Fort Lauderdale Color Guard joined the Miami Color Guard at the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Southeast District Change of Watch Ceremony and Awards Brunch held at Miami Shores Country Club. The color guard performed the posting and retiring of the colors as part of the ceremony. The participation of the SAR Color Guard highlighted the chapter’s continued support for America’s armed services and its commitment to honoring those who serve our nation.

In support of the America 250 Semiquincentennial commemorations, the chapter has undertaken several significant initiatives. On Jan. 31, the chapter hosted an outstanding America 250 Liberty Tree Dedication ceremony at Tamarac Veterans Park, drawing approximately 100 attendees.

On March 14, the chapter commemorated America’s 250th anniversary with the dedication of the First Amphibious Assault Memorial. The memorial, located in Pompano Beach, commemorates the first amphibious assault conducted by American forces during the Revolutionary War. The memorial was a project of the FLSSAR, with significant leadership and support from the Fort Lauderdale Chapter. Through a successful fundraising campaign exceeding $250,000, with contributions from compatriots across Florida and the nation, this major commemorative project has been brought to fruition, creating a lasting tribute to the courage and innovation of the Patriots who carried the fight for independence to the sea. Speakers at the dedication included SAR President General Michael Elston and FLSSAR President Chris Washler.

the spring as the chapter conducts its annual Youth Education contests and presents awards to outstanding JROTC and Sea Cadets throughout the region, continuing its mission to promote patriotism, honor our Revolutionary War Patriot Ancestors and inspire future generations to appreciate our nation’s founding principles.

Jacksonville Chapter The Jacksonville Chapter, Florida Society, during its luncheon on Nov. 20, 2025, presented 11 officers from Clay, Duval and Nassau counties with various public service medals and certificates, including ones for Heroism and the SAR EMS and the SAR Law Enforcement commendations. One of our attendees was a K-9 Patriot, who was cited recently for finding a lost child who had wandered away from home.

Pensacola Chapter Compatriot Dr. Benjamin Findley Jr. and his wife, Karen, conducted a fun and challenging marathon, teaching classes for Heritage Day at Beulah Elementary School, below. Dressed in Colonial garb, Findley taught America 250th topics, focusing on spies and George Washington’s Spy Ring.

Findley, a retired colonel, said it was a fun experience with a great bunch of students. He was asked some of the same questions he’s gotten in the past, such as, “Are you a pirate?” and, “Was George Washington’s Secret Agent Number 1?”

Panama City Chapter On Dec. 13, 2025, the Panama City Chapter took part in Wreaths Across America at the Millville Cemetery with other groups from across Bay County, including the DAR, North Bay Haven Sea Cadets.

The chapter’s new SAR flag truck came in handy.

St. Augustine Chapter Gone but not forgotten. My youngest brother, Dennis, died in a car accident 45 years ago. A few months before his high-school graduation, he was a passenger in the car.

A good student and athlete, he was granted delayed entry to the Marine Corps upon graduation, but it never happened. Few days pass that I don’t think about him. I am so glad that the NSSAR offers a Memorial Membership that he and my older brother, Mike, were eligible for through my membership, having proven an ancestor in the Revolutionary War. I can’t help but think that if he knew, he would be proud.

Tallahassee Chapter In mid-January, the Tallahassee Chapter SAR Color Guard mustered our largest contingent of color guardsmen for the Sauls-Bridges American Legion flag retirement ceremony.

On Jan. 19, members of our color guard, including Craig FitzGerald and Compatriot Lee Norris, had an SAR informational table at the Crawfordville, Fla., Arbor Day celebration, below. They were joined by Kelly Rentz of the

Fort San Luis Chapter, NSDAR, and Compatriot Shawn Cloud.

We also raised funds by selling pocket copies of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

In addition, we met one of the grandsons of Ansel Ferell, the only known Revolutionary War veteran buried in Leon County, Fla. In 2017, the chapter honored this Patriot Ancestor with a grave-marking ceremony. We informed his grandson that for the 250th, the chapter would like to return to their family cemetery to honor Ansel Ferrell with a wreath-laying ceremony.

Withlacoochee Chapter The George Washington War Tent Traveling Exhibit/ Museum is continuing to make inroads into our target audiences. The tent was presented at Liberty Park, Inverness, Fla., on Veterans Day while the Withlacoochee Color Guard led the Veterans Day Parade.

The next day, the GW Tent exhibit was set up at the first of three schools, where from November to December, we reached more than 900 students of multiple grades. First was Wider Horizons, a private school in Spring Hill, Fla., where we presented the tent outside, while educational lectures engaged students inside. Jim Griffith and Jonathan Hunt brought Revolutionary Rarities to the venue and conducted a mock trivia game show on Revolutionary War facts. They interviewed and filmed students in the Colonial dress of their chosen Patriot from a Revolutionary-era biography fair held a few weeks earlier. Each recited their winning oration from the school competition.

Former National Historian General Bill Stone shared presentations on the “First Four Flags,” the Barnabus Webb powder horn and the “Wooden Sword” of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. George and Martha Washington (Compatriot Bill Elder and wife, Cara), met with students both inside and outside, in the tent, among the exhibits.

The students were cycled through visits to the GW Tent in groups of 15 and had great questions for the Withlacoochee uniformed guides.

Historical Interpreter Ms. Dee Collier also engaged the students as Deborah Sampson, the only known female to fight in the Revolution. She masqueraded as a regimental soldier and was paid as such until discovered. Thanks to Dr. Domenick Maglio and wife Julie, the owners of Wider Horizons and parents of Compatriot Rocco Maglio for a day of well-run activities.

GEORGIA SAR The Georgia Department of Revenue now offers a special commemorative license plate celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States, which was proposed

by Lee Herron, president of the Brier Creek Chapter, and strongly supported by State Sen. Max Burns throughout the legislative process.

“As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, this commemorative plate offers Georgians a meaningful way to recognize our nation’s founding and the pivotal role our state played in it,” said Revenue Commissioner Frank O’Connell. “We are especially proud that the design reflects the talent and engagement of Georgia’s students, whose creativity connects our Revolutionary past with the next generation of civic leaders.”

The America 250 plate features a design created by Georgia middle school students as part of a statewide civics education initiative undertaken in partnership with the Georgia Department of Education. The winning design was submitted by Eden Pethel, a student and C.A.R. member. Drawing inspiration from her visits to Georgia’s Revolutionary War sites, Pethel explained: “The red stars on the design represent the following Georgia Revolutionary War sites from north to south: Fight at Van’s Creek/Hornet’s Nest, Battle of Kettle Creek, Sieges of Augusta, Battle of Brier Creek, Battles of Savannah, Fort Morris, and the Frederica Naval Action.”

Georgia vehicle owners have the option to choose the commemorative plate when registering a new vehicle or renewing an existing registration through their county tag office. Drivers who wish to exchange their plate outside of their registration renewal period will be charged a $20 new registration fee. Available through 2030, the plate will serve as a standard option—rather than a specialty plate— ensuring public access at no additional cost.

At the annual George Washington Birthday Celebration on Feb. 16, six Athens Police Department officers were presented the Law Enforcement Commendation Medal for their actions while responding to a flaming car accident on Dec. 20, 2025. Their quick response, at risk to themselves, while performing lifesaving services to the injured demonstrated exceptional professionalism. Those officers receiving medals were Lt. Von Anderson, Officer Declan Bethel, Senior Police Officer Jonathan Surine, Officer First Class Noah Doster, SAR Chapter President Grant Tribble and Capt. Kerel Heard. Also attending were Senior Police Officer Zachary Davis and Officer First Class Franco Videla.

At the same dinner, several members received awards for outstanding service, including chapter Compatriot Jacob Wang for the George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest, the Eagle Scout Scholarship Contest and the Joseph S. Rumbaugh Oratory Contest. GASSAR President William J. Tankersly installed the chapter’s officers for the year and inducted John Thrasher as a new compatriot.

Ocmulgee Chapter Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Tisdale was awarded the Ocmulgee Chapter’s Law Enforcement Award for helping save the lives of two deputies who were overcome with exposure to meth and fentanyl. Also attending were Chuck Garnet, President Roy Griffis, Crawford County Sheriff Lewis Walker, Tisdale, incoming President Paul Roberts and John Trussell.

Skunk Brigade Two Skunk Brigade members—Ted Walker of the Henry Laurens SAR Chapter in Aiken, S.C., and Lee Herron of the Brier Creek SAR Chapter in Screven County, Ga.—traveled to Augusta, Ga., on Jan. 27 to present their Revolutionary War Travelin’ Trunk program to the Westminster Schools.

Walker and Herron presented a 45-minute program to a fifth-grade class of 41 students.

The Travelin’ Trunk consists of many Revolutionary War artifacts, and the students were told how these items were used and made.

The Skunk Brigade is headquartered in the Fall Line Region of the GASSAR. Each of the 44 members wears a skunk Ted Walker and Lee Herron hat fashioned and made presented their Travelin’ Trunk program. from “road-kill skunks.”

ILLINOIS SAR General Joseph Bartholomew Chapter On Oct. 25, 2025, the chapter dedicated a Liberty Tree along the Constitution Trail near Connie Link Amphitheatre in Normal, Ill., as part of the NSSAR’s America 250 Liberty Tree program. The Princeton Elm was planted with the assistance of the Town of Normal Parks and Recreation Department and commemorates the historic Liberty Tree in Boston, where Patriots gathered during the American Revolution.

The dedication ceremony drew community leaders and SAR members and was highlighted by the attendance of President General Michael J. Elston. Chapter President Jay Cummins and Liberty Tree Project Coordinator Dale Simpson helped organize the event, which also coincided with the chapter’s 50th observance and the Great Lakes District meeting.

Located along a heavily used community trail, the Liberty Tree now serves as a living reminder of the ideals of liberty and civic engagement that inspired the American Revolution.

Long Knives Chapter The chapter has been busy all winter preparing for their Liberty Tree marking ceremonies that will be taking place starting at the end of March. The chapter is setting the stone markers at the base of all 15 trees planted. As we know, springtime weather can be tricky, but everything is on schedule. The marking ceremonies will have a variety of participants, including students, school bands, buglers, American Legion, VFW Posts, area DAR chapters, historical societies, local city and government officials and other SAR chapters. LOUISIANA SAR Compatriot Major Bradley T. Hayes, Esq., joined with the French Society for the annual rededication ceremony for the Marquis de Lafayette’s grave in the Picpus Cemetery. “It was one of the great privileges and honors I’ve been accorded in my 15 years as a member of the SAR,” Hayes said. “My family was in Paris on vacation and European VPG Patrick Mesnard invited us to join him.”

not an actual ‘grave marking’ as an SAR Patriot marker is prominently displayed [and has been for a long, long time, given the green patina of its copper].”

The American flag that hangs over his tomb is changed out once a year. Members of the U.S. Military (a Navy captain and sailor from the local embassy and an Army color guard from Germany) performed the honors.

There were many other dignitaries from both the French and U.S. militaries (including several General Officers), French elected officials (both local and national) and senior staff from the U.S. Embassy, and many ex-pats and other heritage organizations were in attendance. The ceremony was done in both French and English. Said Hayes, “When I placed the NSSAR wreath at the foot of his tomb, I saluted and uttered those immortal words, ‘Lafayette, nous voici!’ ” PPP On Feb. 28, the LASSAR Attakapas (Lafayette) and Gen. Philemon Thomas (Baton Rouge) chapters jointly sponsored a Patriot grave marking at a private cemetery near Abbeville, La., below. Revolutionary War Patriot Marin Mouton fought in the Attakapas Post Militia under the leadership of Spanish Gov. Gen. Bernardo de Galvez, assuring the eventual American victory over the English.

In the fall of 1755, relations with the English became ever more tense, and Salvador Mouton moved his family north to Restigouche (New Brunswick, Canada). With him were his wife, Anne Bastarache, and his son, Jean (eventual Founding Father of Lafayette, La.). While evading the

English at Restigouche, Salvador and Anne had a son, Marin, born about 1758. In 1760, they all were captured by the English and brought south to Acadia. Salvador was imprisoned with his brother, Louis, at Fort Edward, Windsor, Canada (formerly Pigiguit).

In 1765, Salvator Mouton with his wife and sons departed from Halifax, Acadia, Canada, and they finally arrived in New Orleans in late 1765.

In April 1766, the Spanish government settled Salvador Mouton and his family along the banks of the Mississippi River at Cabannocé, in today’s St. James Parish.

Marin served in the Attakapas Post Militia and appeared on the Roster of May 10, 1777. He is, therefore, a Patriot (NSSAR Ancestor #253643) of the American Revolution.

The ceremony was attended by 20 SAR compatriots, the LASSAR Color Guard, DAR representatives from the Galvez and Acadia chapters and descendants of Marin Mouton. The ceremony drew approximately 80 participants.

MARYLAND SAR At the MDSSAR semiannual meeting on Oct. 18, 2025, attendees were treated to a special presentation of Compatriot Wilson King Barnes’ musical composition, “Champions of Freedom March,” sung by fellow Compatriot Doug Jimerson. Compatriot Barnes is the son of past President General Wilson King Barnes.

Through inspiration and prayer, the musically gifted Barnes plays by ear and, by his own admission, cannot write musical script. With the assistance of a music teacher in Dickeyville, Md., Compatriot Barnes’ composition was now set to script. The lyrics of the composition first address a “Prayer for Liberty,” while the following verses attempt to answer who we are, what we did do, what we learned and what we do now that’s important.

Following the presentation, a motion was made, seconded and voted to adopt Compatriot Barnes’ composition as the official MDSSAR theme song.

the War of 1812 in Maryland, one man stands out, Dr. Lee Park.

For more than 30 years, many of us have had the honor to work with and learn from Lee as our President and Surgeon General. He is always soft spoken, supportive and able to bring men together with sage advice and sound reasoning.

As we celebrate our nation’s anniversary, we thank Lee for all his dedicated years of service as he also celebrates his 100th birthday.

Lee’s journey started in July 1926 as our nation celebrated its sesquicentennial. He grew up in Falls Church, Va., and attended the Putney Preparatory School in southeastern Vermont. From there, he graduated from Yale University in 1948 with a B.S. in Zoology and from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1952. This was followed by an Osler Internship in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital 1952-53. He was then called into the Navy, transferred to Korea and served as a regimental surgeon in the First Marine Division Expeditionary Force.

After returning home, completing his residency at Johns Hopkins, starting a family and perfecting his craft, Lee turned his attention to his family roots, chronicling and writing books on the Smith, Crandall and Park families.

After a meeting with President General Carl Bessett at Sparrows Point Country Club, Lee joined the SAR in 1981.

He has served as Maryland’s surgeon and assistant surgeon since 2002 and as NSSAR Surgeon General from 200911. He joined the Society of the War of 1812 in Maryland in 1996 and became Maryland’s president from 2004-06, the national Surgeon General from 2012-17 and District President General from 2017-25. He was Surgeon General of the Sons of the Revolution from 2015-18, governor of the National Society Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, Maryland Branch 2006-08 and Surgeon General of the National Huguenot Society from 2005-08, and held memberships in the Society of Colonial Wars, the Royal Society of St.

George, the Holland Society of New York, the St. Nicholas Society, the Descendants of Mexican War Veterans and the Ancient and Honorable Mechanical Company of Baltimore.

I had the pleasure of meeting with Lee and his lovely wife, Mary, and discussing his long life of accomplishments and dedication to so many causes. After such an extensive career and so many achievements, you would think he would be ready to slow down. This is not the case, as he has traveled extensively both inside and outside the country this last year. His thoughts and advice on reaching this milestone in life are simple: keep moving, take advantage of opportunities that present themselves and cherish the family and friends that you share along your life’s journey.

As one of my personal mentors, it is hard to sum up his generosity, kindness and devotion in helping guide me and others along our own paths. For all of this, we wish for him a blissful centennial birthday.

On Nov. 8, 2025, at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, Mich., a plaque was installed and dedicated to Private Thomas Campbell/Camel, above.

Thomas was an African American Revolutionary War soldier who survived the harsh winter of 1778 with George Washington at Valley Forge. He was born into slavery in Virginia’s Culpeper County, around 1760, and died in 1849 on his farm. His enslaver (Col. Martin Pickett) offered him his freedom if he would serve in the Continental Army, which Campbell did.

At 16, he enlisted in 1776 in a company of the 4th Virginia Regiment, which joined Washington’s Army at White Marsh, N.Y., and later at the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse. Most of the American and British troops were overcome with heat exhaustion at Monmouth, and Thomas was one of them. He given a medical discharge.

In 1832 in New York, Campbell sought a pension for his service, which was denied, apparently because of confusion over his last name, which was alternately listed as Camel. Later, Campbell filed for two land grants, which were approved by President Martin Van Buren, enabling Robinson, his wife, Louisa, and the three youngest of their four children to move from N.Y. to the Hickory Corners property they were awarded.

Dignitaries who spoke included MISSAR President Joe Williams; former S.R. State President Gary Gibson; President Andrew Kostun of the Lexington Alarm Society, C.A.R.; Senior President Elizabeth Santas Kraatz of the Ki-Ka-Ma-Sung, C.A.R.; Col. Kathryn Prater (Ret.) of the Michigan National Guard; State Senator Thomas Albert; and Peter Dickow, West Michigan district director for U.S. Senator Gary Peters.

Efforts are underway to locate Thomas and his wife’s graves, including a search of their original two 80-acre land grant parcels, which they deeded sections of to three of their children.

Jeremiah Clark Chapter The Jeremiah Clark Chapter, Clarkson, Mich., conducted a Patriots’ grave marking and plaque dedication on Sept. 20, 2025, at the historic Lakeview Cemetery, below.

The entry into the cemetery was lined with American flags posted by the Clarkston Rotary Club. The gravemarking service honored Patriot Jeremiah Clark Jr., his wife, Sarah Millington Clark, and his daughter, Lydia Clark Brown. Recognition was given to the 19 Clark descendants in attendance and the 14 family members who accompanied them. Honors were rendered with a presentation of wreaths, a sword salute and Echo Taps. After the grave marking, a town crier ringing a bell, a field drummer and a Revolutionary War re-enactor led the 100 attendees across the cemetery.

The town-crier processional ended at the center of the cemetery at the site of the SAR America 250 Patriots’ Plaque. The wording on the plaque honored the Patriots, Corp. Jeremiah Clark Jr. and Private Caleb Barton Merrill, two of the 44 Patriots buried in Oakland County. At the conclusion of the dedication, honors were presented with three shots fired by the 1st Royal Artillery, Seven Years War re-enactors.

This service was made possible by the collaboration of the SAR, DAR, C.A.R., Vietnam Veterans, Independence Township Public Works Department and the Clarkston Rotary Club.

Pvt. Ephraim Wheaton Chapter On Jan. 22, the Ingham County Historical Commission, along with the Pvt. Ephraim Wheaton Chapter NSSAR and Lansing Chapter NSDAR, jointly unveiled an America 250th Exhibit at the Ingham County Courthouse, above.

Ingham County is the county seat of the Capital of Michigan. The exhibit features major phases of the Revolutionary War, such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence and its printing by Mary Goddard. Other items on display include a fife, spectacles, an inkwell set, an American flag from the Battle of Bennington and the 1836 American flag, which was the flag when Michigan was admitted into the Union in 1837.

Two Revolutionary War soldiers are known to be buried in Ingham County—Pvt. Ephraim Wheaton was a fifer and drummer, and Pvt. Martin DuBois was a calvary bugler.

There is also a cenotaph burial for Sgt. Major John Champe, a spy in the attempted capture of Benedict Arnold.

MINNESOTA SAR When 6-foot, 5-inch Grant Kruger recently joined the MNSSAR’s Living History Team, a unique opportunity presented itself. Because of his height and physical resemblance to the father of our country, it was suggested that he could do a great first-person impression of George Washington. With a little bit of research into the commanderin-chief’s uniforms and accoutrements, and a lot of sewing by Grant’s wife, Nancy, Grant is now fully outfitted as the general as he would have been uniformed throughout most of the war. Nancy didn’t stop there; she made herself a dress so she could portray Martha by her husband’s side.

Instead of just hearing about the general and his faithful wife, the recipients of our Patriot Chest presentations will get to meet them and ask them questions about their lives and experiences during the Revolutionary War.

NEW JERSEY SAR On Dec. 27, 2025, (Trenton) members of the NJSSAR Color Guard, along with NJDAR Vice Regent Catherine Medich, NJSSR President Chris Sands and SRNJ President Ken McKeever, braved 17-degree weather and an ice storm at the commemoration of the Battles of Trenton and Assunpink Creek. Comments were delivered by NJSSAR President Roger S. Williams.

Trenton Battle Monument – “We stand in the shadow of this monument to honor the soldiers, both American and Hessian, who fought bravely on these grounds around us 249 years ago this morning. A new chapter in the history of humankind began that frigid morning all around us. Against the waters of the Delaware River, a cause of liberty, all but lost, struck a flint that ignited renewed hope. At the falls of Trenton, the tide was turned on the fortunes of the British Empire. While the luster, and prestige of THIS monument may not have the celebrity of other American landmarks, what it humbly signifies is most assuredly the genesis of a great nation that strives to reach the founding principles of life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and justice for all. We are not there yet, but to paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, we are a republic, and we want to keep it.”

Mill Hill and Assunpink Creek – “We are here because Mill Hill is a pivotal yet often overlooked site in America’s military history. Today marks 249 years since a fierce battle unfolded on the banks of the Assunpink Creek. Following a victory at Trenton, General George Washington and his newly reformed, outnumbered army of 5,000 men braced themselves against a larger British and Hessian force led by Lt. Gen. Charles Cornwallis. Despite being outnumbered, Washington’s men, aided by a delaying action led by Col. Edward Hand, repelled three major attacks and inflicted heavy casualties before executing a daring nighttime flanking maneuver that surprised Cornwallis at Princeton the next morning. Often dismissed as “The Second Battle of Trenton,” this engagement was critical to the success of the Ten Crucial Days and set the stage for the Battle of Princeton. More British and Hessian troops fell here than at Trenton or Princeton, making this a testament to Washington’s strategic brilliance. When you leave, remember you stood where history turned, as Americans fought not for territory, but for the ideal that all men are created equal.”

Jockey Hollow members officiated the event. Period-correct music was provided by the Colonial Musketeers Senior Fife and Drum Corps, and the NJSSAR Color Guard presented the colors. Representatives included Morristown and Morris County Assembly persons and the district’s N.J. State Senator. Many residents were also in attendance. This was the state’s first officially sanctioned Liberty Tree planting by the NJSSAR as part of the America 250 program.

On Dec. 13, 2025, the chapter (working in conjunction with the local DAR and Wreaths Across America) installed 700 wreaths in Methodist/Presbyterian Cemetery in Succasunna, N.J. It was well attended, with many participating in the distribution of wreaths.

On Feb. 14, several officers and members attended the NJSSAR meeting in Princeton, N.J. On March 5-7, Chapter President Dr. Jeff La Marca attended the NSSAR Leadership Conference in Louisville.

Jeff will serve on the Educational Committee.

Jockey Hollow Chapter Despite the Northeast experiencing one of the coldest winters on record (much like Washington’s army had experienced at Jockey Hollow during the severest cold winter quartering of his army in 1779-1780), the intrepid compatriots braved the cold with numerous outside events.

At the Feb. 17 meeting of the Lincoln County (NM) Board of Commissioners NMSSAR President Robert E. Vance inducted Commissioner Timothy A. Prather into the Gadsden Chapter NMSSAR. His rosette was pinned by his mother, Kathy Prather, a DAR member.

Compatriot Prather was also presented the NSSAR War Service Medal for his stint of armed combat in Iraq.

NORTH CAROLINA SAR Colonel Alexander Erwin Chapter The Colonel Alexander Erwin Chapter in Morganton, N.C., has honored five Patriots since the year started.

On Jan. 17, Patriot Charles Haney (P-174479) was honored at the request of one of his descendants, Dr. Jim Haney, who at 93 years old was the only one who could point out the exact location of the grave. A few months earlier, the chapter learned that Dr. Haney hoped to see Patriot Charles Haney’s grave marked by the SAR. He did and was joined by his son and grandkids, above, along with several cousins for this dedication. Dr. Jim Haney passed away on March 7.

Earlier that day, the chapter honored two Patriots; recognized were Robert Patton (P-335379) and James Shanks (P-334162).

Three SAR descendant compatriots were present, Robert L. Patton IV (past president) and his grandsons, Isaac Triplett and Alexander Fleming, above.

The Patriot Grave Marking dedication honoring Joseph Dobson Sr. (P-328736) and Joseph Dobson Jr. (P-148704) was a special event, as 26 descendants of these Patriots were in attendance, including Compatriot Bill Brown and his grandson, Sam Brittain, both of whom participated in the ceremony in Colonial attire.

Members from the Catawba Valley Chapter and the Daniel Morgan Chapter (S.C.) participated in the dedication. Members of the Quaker Meadows and the Vesuvius Furnace Chapter (DAR) were also in attendance.

Lafayette Chapter The Le Marquis de Lafayette Chapter celebrated the 236th Commemoration of the N.C. Delegates Ratifying the U.S. Constitution in Fayetteville, N.C. The event was held at Cool Spring Tavern, where several delegates stayed during the 1789 convention, as well as the temporary home of Phoenix Lodge 8.

The program included historian Joseph Westendorf from the Cumberland County Library and proclamations from the mayor of Fayetteville and the Cumberland County Commissioners chairman.

The State House was the actual location where the event was held. The Great Fire of 1831 destroyed the state house, and the Market House, which recently went through a restoration, was built in its place.

Besides ratifying the U.S. Constitution at the Convention, the General Assembly also voted to transfer the state’s frontier lands to the federal government, ordered a lighthouse built on Ocracoke Island and annexed the upper part of Bladen County to Cumberland.

William Davie, who served as colonel and later commissary general during the Revolutionary War, led efforts to pass an act to establish a state university, making the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill the oldest public university in the U.S., thanks to the delegates who met in Fayetteville in November of 1789.

OHIO SAR Mahoning Valley Chapter As part of their 250th Anniversary Celebration, the Mahoning Valley Chapter (MVCSSAR) held grave-marking and memorial ceremonies, above, for five Revolutionary War Patriots buried in Columbiana County at Longs Run Cemetery, located at Longs Run Trinity Church, East Liverpool, Ohio, on Oct. 25, 2025.

Patriots honored were Private Paul Fisher (1758-1827), Private Henry Fisher (1760-1826), Militiaman Daniel Herbert (1759-1848), Private James Smith (1757-1845) and Militiaman Samuel Quigley (1757-1842).

The grave-marking and memorial ceremonies were open to the public. The ceremony included the reading of Patriot biographies, the dedication of grave markers, a color guard, a musket salute in detail, Revolutionary Warperiod uniforms, ladies in period clothing, the placement of wreaths, bagpipes and Taps.

Chapter President Stephen Barlow led the ceremony.

Harris Ferry Chapter The chapter was established in 1940, when a group of gentlemen approached the PASSAR requesting a charter to form a new chapter after the Harrisburg Chapter closed due to inactivity. The charter was granted, with John McIlhenny Smith elected as its first president. Fast forward to 2025, and Harris Ferry has finally returned the favor to its first president by honoring him with a Compatriot Grave-Marking Ceremony at Grantville Cemetery. Smith was a World War I veteran in the Quartermaster Corps.

During WWII, he served as director and deputy director of the Pennsylvania Selective Service.

The ceremony also honored Smith’s Patriot Ancestor, Peter Ensminger, who served in Capt. Baltzer Orth’s 1st Company of the 2nd Battalion of the Lancaster County Militia between 1781-1782 and Capt. John Orth’s 7th Company of the 2nd Battalion of the Lancaster County Militia in 1783. The chapter also recognized all members, both past and present, of the U.S. Armed Forces in commemoration of Veterans Day. Many attendees stepped forward to be recognized of their service.

Valley Forge Chapter

While America marks its 250th birthday celebrations this year, one Pennsylvania SAR Chapter has recently marked its centennial.

On Nov. 9, 2025, the Valley Forge Chapter celebrated— replete with balloons, awards and a renewed sense of patriotism—with a pledge toward its future.

The chapter, which represents PA’s greater Lehigh Valley, was founded in the waning months of 1925 by compatriots who were primarily employed by one of the nation’s industrial powerhouses, Bethlehem Steel. One hundred years and 56 chapter presidents later, the chapter continues to thrive, with approximately 125 members within its roster.

Eighty compatriots, friends and guests filled out the reception hall of Bethlehem’s Blue Event Center, enjoying an elaborate, catered luncheon to mark the special occasion.

The afternoon’s guest speaker was U.S. Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, who has been a member of the chapter since SAR MAGAZINE

his high-school years.

Rep. Mackenzie spoke of patriotism and the enormous sacrifices of our Founding Fathers.

He also presented a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition, above, to the outgoing and incoming chapter presidents, Robert J. Abbott and Brian S. Atwood.

Rep. Mackenzie and his mother, PA State Rep. Milou Mackenzie, presented to the chapter both a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania House of Representatives Citation and a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition.

Additional speakers were PASSAR President Peter Reinhart, PA C.A.R. President Reinhard Brasko and, in a surprise phone call from Kentucky, SAR Executive Director Phil Bloyd, who wished us all a “happy birthday” and that he “keeps hearing great things about the Valley Forge Chapter.”

The luncheon culminated with the signing of a “Refreshed Charter,” approved by the NSSAR in Louisville, Ky. (ribbons and all), that would not only honor the chapter’s past but also look ahead to inspire future generations. This meaningful way to renew a commitment to the ideals of our forefathers, established generations ago, is proudly displayed alongside the chapter’s original 1925 charter.

Dr. Rindlisbacher said that he was moved to paint this ship as a tribute to these Americans’ tragic personal sacrifice for freedom and asked if we could recommend a worthy home for the painting. Historians verify that this “hell-ship,” moored in Wallabout Bay, N.Y., killed more American Patriots imprisoned aboard her than all the battle casualties Americans suffered in the Revolution.

The painting is oil on canvas, 18 by 24 inches, an accurate depiction based on the 20-inch H.M.S. Jersey artists model that he created.

Ellis County Chapter

SOUTH CAROLINA SAR

Compatriots attended the Waxahachie Police Department’s annual 2025 Awards Banquet to award the Law Commendation Certificate and Medal to Deputy City Manager Albert Lawrence.

Lawrence served eight years in the U.S. Army, honorably discharged with the rank of SGT, environmental technician. The presentation was delivered by Chief Joe Wiser, and the award was presented by President William D. Hill, Color Guard Mark Gundert and Historian Philip Taylor.

On March 7, 2026, the chapter joined South Carolina Society host Dr. George Mosse Chapter, Hilton Head Island, and the Thomas Heyward Jr. Chapter, Bluffton, for the 36th Patriotic Pilgrimage to the tomb of South Carolina Declaration of Independence signer Thomas Heyward Jr. Chapter President Tom Mikell was among the 16 presenters of wreaths in honor of this great South Carolinian. Joining him, among many others, were compatriots and fellow chapter members, South Carolina Society President Mike Monahan and Society Past President Randy Atkins. South Carolina and Georgia chapters were participants, along with representatives of the Heyward Family Association, DAR and C.A.R.

The Freedom Chapter was honored to have been chosen to present the nation’s colors in a New Year’s kick-off of the America 250 Anniversary Celebration hosted by The Heritage Society of Houston.

The chapter performed the color guard duties and had a great time working Los Granaderos y Damas de Galvez Houston and The Houston Saengerbund. There were several DAR chapters; the Gen. Philemon Thomas Chapter SAR of Baton Rouge, La.; the Shimmer Flute Choir; and Scouting. We filmed material for an episode of The Today Show on NBC, below, which aired Jan. 2, highlighting how America is celebrating its 250th Anniversary. We have been planning activities and are excited to share our Texas connections.

TEXAS SAR Cradle of Texas Chapter At a recent chapter meeting, widely recognized marine artist Dr. Peter J. Rindlisbacher of Katy, Texas, presented a slide show chronicling his paintings of naval ships over a period of several centuries.

All passed the Hunters 101 class and received a certificate presented by Texas Parks and Wildlife approved instructor Peter Baron.

Patrick Henry Chapter Vietnam War Army Veteran Compatriot Jesse O. Villarreal Sr. joined his team of 10-12 South Texas veterans to fly to Washington, D.C., on Austin Honor Flight #103.

In addition to being an outstanding compatriot, Jesse is a member of the San Antonio Canary Association and the Granaderos Y Damas de Galvez (Laredo and San Antonio chapters) and is vice president of the 1718 San Antonio Founding Families. In 1731, settlers arrived in Spanish Texas from the Canary Islands, predating the first migration from the U.S. Chapter President Joseph Burton was the Honor Flight coordinator.

Jesse stated it was an honor to participate and that saying it was an experience of a lifetime would be an understatement. He was gratified to have traveled with his veterans group, Tejanos In Action, of which he is historian.

The mission is to provide honor guard for veterans’ funerals.

Visiting the Vietnam memorial was a highlight but was also bittersweet. They visited other memorials, such as the World War I, World War II, Korean War, Marine and Air Force memorials. At Arlington Cemetery, they witnessed the changing of the guard, and the group placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

George Bright, sergeant at arms, observed outstanding reverence for our flag at his local Ceder Creek Middle School. To celebrate their daily respect for the flag ceremonies, George prepared and presented 20 students certificates of recognition.

UTAH SAR November saw the UTSSAR Color Guard participate in the Layton City Veterans Day Parade, held on the Saturday closest to Veterans Day, which in 2025, was Nov. 8. Layton City built and installed a Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Replica in 2018. The UTSSAR Color Guard supported the dedication of this monument. The Veterans Day parade respectfully marches past the memorial each year.

On Nov. 11, a Veterans Day Devotional was provided by the Why I Love America organization in the Bountiful Regional Event Center. The UTSSAR Color Guard provided the flag ceremony. 2025 events concluded with the color guard partnering with the Bountiful DAR Chapter on Dec. 13, 2025, in a Wreaths Across America program held at the Bountiful City Veterans Memorial.

Point of the Mountain Chapter March 5-7, the world’s largest genealogical conference, known as RootsTech, took place in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The annual conference drew 10,000 in person, with many more thousands online. For the third consecutive year, the NSSAR hosted a booth in the exhibition hall for the purpose of engaging visitors with the question, “Do you have a Patriot Ancestor?” Many of our visitors from 24 states answered immediately with the name of at least one ancestor who participated in the Revolution. Others weren’t sure but wanted to find out. Fifteen members of the chapter and UTSSAR, with one member from Missouri and the two National genealogical staff members, encouraged booth visitors to act on this 250th anniversary year of our country.

Deborah Maddux, lead genealogist at National HQ, conducted a session titled “Sea to Shining Sea – The American Revolution Outside of the Colonies.”

Also traveling from National HQ was Travis Franklin, a

staff genealogist. Both were helpful in talking to the many booth visitors. POM Compatriot Peter Sweeny dressed in his Patriot Ancestor’s military uniform, and Doug Adams wore Colonial clothes that might have been worn by his Patriot Ancestor, who functioned as a spy for the Patriots’ cause. Trent Grandy represented the UTSSAR’s color guard on Saturday (family day). The National’s Store provided new items available from the store. A QR code, if used, offered a 10 percent discount on items purchased. Drew Hight, NSSAR’s marketing and PR manager, provided support materials and several raffle items, given out on family day. All in all, it was a successful three days.

Resolves Chapter was inducted as president, succeeding Dr. Michael Weyler of the Col. William Grayson Chapter. The meeting set a confident tone for the Semiquincentennial year, with chapters across the Commonwealth advancing commemorations, educational programs and public ceremonies that highlight Virginia’s central role in the American Revolution.

Along the way, many VASSAR members—and more than a few enthusiastic family members—could be spotted crisscrossing the Commonwealth with their Virginia 250 Passports in hand, collecting stamps at historic sites, enjoying special discounts and competing for prizes.

The new Passport program, sponsored by the VA250 Commission, could become something of a friendly rivalry among chapters, with compatriots comparing who has logged the most miles, the most stamps or the most creative “Revolutionary selfie” taken at a battlefield wayside. The lighthearted competition has added a welcome dash of humor to the year’s commemorative efforts, reminding everyone that celebrating history can be both meaningful and fun.

Abraham Brown Chapter The VASSAR formally chartered the Abraham Brown Chapter on Feb. 28 during a ceremony held at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.

Twenty‑four compatriots were inducted as charter members, including several descendants of the chapter’s namesake, Patriot Abraham Brown of Charles City County.

In recognition of their role in establishing the new chapter, qualifying charter members were awarded the SAR’s newest insignia—the Gen. Casimir Pulaski Founders Medal—presented for the first time in Virginia during the ceremony.

The Abraham Brown Chapter begins its work committed to advancing the SAR mission in one of the Commonwealth’s most historically significant regions.

Col. William Grayson Chapter On March 15, the chapter held its annual commemoration and wreath‑laying ceremony, honoring the life and service of its namesake at his gravesite in Woodbridge, Va. The event drew state and national leadership, with greetings delivered by President General Michael J. Elston, International Vice President Ken Bonner, VASSAR President Darrin M. Schmidt and Chapter President Andrew Mills. Their remarks reflected on Col. Grayson’s military leadership, his contributions to the early Republic and the chapter’s ongoing commitment to preserving his legacy. The ceremony was broadcast live on Facebook, extending its reach to compatriots and community members across the country. Chapter members in colonial attire formed a color guard contingent, adding historical presence and solemnity to the proceedings.

Col. George Waller Chapter On Jan. 25, the chapter held its annual dinner, welcoming Henry County Sheriff Wayne Davis as the keynote speaker. Sheriff Davis, a 32‑year law‑enforcement veteran and the first African American sheriff in the county’s history, spoke on leadership, public service and the importance of community engagement in strengthening civic institutions.

During the program, Chapter President John Cahill recognized several compatriots for their service. The chapter also presented Sheriff Davis with the SAR Law Enforcement Commendation Medal in appreciation of his distinguished career.

The event continued the chapter’s tradition of engaging local leaders and promoting the values of patriotism, service and historical education within the community.

Culpeper Minutemen Chapter The chapter marked a major milestone with the 250th Anniversary Muster, commemorating the historic 1775 assembly of the original Minutemen on the courthouse lawn. The event drew re-enactors, heritage groups and local families for a day of living history and reflection. The chapter also participated in regional Veterans Day observances, reinforcing its leadership in Semiquincentennial programming and public historical education.

George Washington Chapter

On Feb. 14, several of these guardsmen also participated in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the American Revolution ceremony, above, and marched in the George Washington Birthday Parade immediately following the commemoration, representing the chapter with distinction throughout the day’s events.

In addition to its commemorative work, the chapter has developed an ongoing series of original videos on its YouTube channel, each highlighting the lives and service of Patriot ancestors represented among its members.

Immediately following the ceremony, the chapter participated in the 2026 George Washington Birthday Parade through Old Town Alexandria. This year’s parade was especially notable, as President General Michael J. Elston, Esq., and National DAR President General Ginnie Sebastian Storage served together as co‑grand marshals. In a historic first, the George Washington Chapter received the inaugural Semiquincentennial Parade Grand Prize, a new award that will be presented annually through the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2050.

On Feb. 22 at Mount Vernon, the chapter took part in the 294th birthday commemoration of Gen. Washington.

Members supported the wreath laying at Washington’s Tomb and participated in the naturalization ceremony held on the estate grounds, welcoming new citizens on the birthday of the nation’s first president. Together, these events highlighted the chapter’s active role in honoring Washington’s legacy and supporting the Semiquincentennial commemorations.

Norfolk Chapter

The Norfolk Chapter led the 250th Anniversary Commemoration of the Skirmish at Kemp’s Landing, one of the signature events in the VASSAR’s Virginia in 1775 Presidential Initiative. Held in the modern-day Kempsville area of Virginia Beach, the ceremony honored the November 1775 clash in which Patriot militia confronted forces loyal to Royal Gov. Lord Dunmore. The event brought together SAR compatriots, local officials, re-enactors and community partners to reflect on the early tensions that shaped Virginia’s path toward open rebellion. Through historical interpretation, wreath presentations and public ceremony, the Norfolk Chapter highlighted the significance of this often-overlooked engagement and reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Revolutionary War history in the Hampton Roads region.

On Jan. 31, the Norfolk Chapter hosted the 250th Commemoration of the Burning of Norfolk. Originally planned as an outdoor ceremony, the event was shifted to a virtual format due to inclement weather, allowing SAR, DAR and C.A.R. members from across Virginia to participate.

The program marked the anniversary of the Jan. 12, 1776, destruction of Norfolk, one of the earliest and most consequential engagements of the American Revolution in Virginia. Presenters reviewed the political tensions leading to the burning, the experiences of Norfolk’s residents and the broader strategic implications for Patriot and Loyalist forces during the opening months of the war.

SMJC Compatriot Richard Ryan, also a member of American Legion Leonard W. Kidd Memorial Post, worked with the SMJC Chapter and VFW Post 1177 in Leesburg to organize the color guard. Presenting colors to open the event in front of approximately 250 people were SMJC Compatriots: Color Guard Commander Ken Bonner, wearing a regimental uniform; Barry Schwoerer, wearing a regimental uniform and carrying a replica musket; and Warner Workman, wearing a typical Virginia Rifleman hunting shirt and carrying a replica rifle. Participants for VFW Post 1177 were: Jason Cound, carrying the national colors, and Elise Woodworth, representing women serving in combat and carrying the flag of the Virginia Commonwealth.

Greetings were given by Dr. Kenneth Hawkins, VSSAR assistant treasurer. “Happy Birthday” to George was led by Cecie Adolphi.

Thomas Nelson Jr. Chapter The Thomas Nelson Jr. Chapter contributed significantly to fall commemorations in the Tidewater region. On Oct. 19, 2025, members participated in the Battle of Yorktown anniversary events, including a wreath-laying ceremony honoring Gov. Thomas Nelson Jr. at the Victory Monument.

On Oct. 26, the chapter led the 250th Commemoration of the Battle of Hampton, bringing together local officials, re-enactors and heritage organizations to remember one of the earliest military engagements in Virginia during the Revolution. These events highlighted the chapter’s leadership in regional Revolutionary War commemoration.

Drummer Jan lemmer has now drummed in WASSAR CG members in both the House and Jan Lemmer Senate in Olympia, Wash. Washington’s Birthday On Feb. 16, members of the WASSAR Color Guard and Fife and Drum gathered on the University of Washington Campus for the 117th annual George Washington Statue Memorial Celebration. This yearly event is held 42

Unclaimed Veterans Laid to Rest On Feb. 27, members of WASSAR CG from the Alexander Hamilton, George Rogers Clark and George Washington chapters traveled to Mt. Tahoma for a service to honor five veterans. WASSAR CG Commander Eric Olsen joined the procession of over 30 vehicles that started at the Chehalis Veterans Museum as they traveled up to Mt. Tahoma to escort the cremains of Shelva Jennings, U.S. Army; Michael Braroe, U.S. Army; Troyce Stirkins, U.S. Army; Roger Thompson, U.S. Navy; and Thor Silva, U.S. Army. Once at Mt. Command, WASSAR CG Commander Olsen joined the other members of the CG and participated in honoring the five veterans.

Cascade Centennial Compatriot Bob Doughty was honored at a recent meeting with the presentation of his 30-year anniversary pin. Bob has been a stalwart member of the SAR at every level, serving as chapter president, state president, Pacific District VPG and a host of other offices. He continues to participate actively in new member recruitment and serves wherever asked. On other fronts, Cascade Centennial continues to find ground-breaking programs. One of the most recent of these featured Compatriot Charlie Frye of the Cascade Centennial President CA Society. Charlie Dick Paul and Compatriot Bob was an advisor on Ken Doughty.

Burns’ documentary The American Revolution and took us behind the scenes on the research and production of the many maps used throughout the documentary.

SPRING 2026

On Feb. 28 and March 1, the George Rogers Clark Chapter along with the WASSAR Fife and Drum Corp had the honor of posting the colors at the organization meetings for two new DAR chapters that have formed in Pierce and Lewis counties in Washington State. Both new DAR chapters sprung from the Sacajawea Chapter in Thurston County, Wash. On Feb 28, the CG met up in Tenino to post colors for the Lewis County DAR chapter, and on March 31, they met up at the city hall in DuPont for the DuPont DAR Chapter. The ladies at both events were excited to have them post colors for their meetings.

Seattle Chapter On Dec. 13, 2025, Wreaths Across America was hosted by the SAR at Lake View Cemetery. The event was in partnership with the Washington State and National Colonial Dames, the Seattle N.J.R.O.T.C. Blue Angel Squadron, DAR Rainier Chapter and UW Medicine IT Services, among others. With the support and sponsorship of the Wreaths Across America program, all 550 veterans, honored Colonial Dames family members, several Seattle pioneers and seven Washington State SAR presidents were given the honors of a wreath.

Seattle SAR President Timothy Zenk conducted the ceremony. The Seattle Chapter Color Guard along with NJROTC cadets posted the colors and military flags. This was followed by the keynote speaker, Washington State Lt. Gov. Denny Heck, who presented the first wreath to honor those who have served and are now serving in the Army service. Lt. Gov. Heck also laid a wreath for Bronze Star recipient Col. Lawrence Stetson.

News media was present, filming the event, and the segment aired on Fox 13 news at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., broadcast on Dec. 13, 2025.

SAR members in attendance were: President Timothy Zenk, George Hanson, Chris Grabowski, Kenneth Marshall, prospective member Michael Browne, Neil Vernon, Stephen Clayton, Christopher Clayton, Richard Seeder, Grant Rauzi and Kenneth Beck.

PPP The annual NJROTC review of the Blue Angel Squadron of Seattle was held on Feb. 8 at U.S. Coast Guard Base Seattle. The Annual Awards Ceremony included an award and monetary scholarship presentation by the SAR Seattle Chapter, which was represented by Neil Vernon, genealogist-registrar.

The award: The U.S. Navy Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) is supported by recognizing the outstanding NSCC cadet with the Sea Cadet Medal Set, which consists of the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal, Bronze Good Citizenship Medal Certificate and Sea Cadet Ribbon Bar. 43

The recipient of the award this year went to PO2 Cyrus Funk.

PPP WISSAR President On March 2, the Don Skarda presented Seattle Chapter Education Lieutenant (j.g.) Jim Team presented to three Greer (USN 1968-1972) classes at the West with a Vietnam War Mercer Elementary Service Certificate, School. Compatriots War Service Medal and Rauzi and Vernon of Vietnam War Service Bar. Seattle and Michael Jim Greer’s wife, Moore of Alexander Karen, is a member of the Karen and Jim Greer.

Hamilton presented to Wisconsin Society DAR. the 64 students. We Afterward, President Skarda was the officiant for James and had a special treat, Karen in renewing their DAR and SAR oaths. with Washington State C.A.R. President Danika Bendickson presenting “Youth in the Revolution.”

Following Danika’s presentation, the program gave emphasis to the Declaration of Independence and its signers. A reading of the preamble was included.

After the presentations, Compatriot Neil Vernon presented to the primary instructor, Julie Langley, a framed copy of the Declaration of Independence, above.

WISCONSIN SAR On June 9, 2025, the Wisconsin Color Guard presented the colors at the opening of the American Battlefield Trust’s American Revolution Traveling Exhibition in West Bend, below, the exhibit’s only Wisconsin stop. It was hosted by the West Bend Community Library and the Joseph Marest Chapter DAR.
