that this was in California?) The next day, the California SAR held its annual public service luncheon, and President John Ferris honored some really special people from the local area—including a woman who saved a compatriot’s life and a chef who organized the feeding of thousands displaced by wildfires.

Finally, I would be remiss if I failed to mention the Battle of Brooklyn Chapter (Empire State SAR) and the dedication of a grave marker for Alexander Hamilton and several other Patriots at Trinity Church in Manhattan in August. Although the church had turned down requests in the past, Chapter Vice President Gary Lane made it happen. One compatriot can make a difference!

At the national level, we had an exceptionally well attended Fall Leadership meeting in Louisville. I am grateful to all of the members and ladies who got in the spirit of our Friday night beach party and danced to the music of a Jimmy Buffet cover band. (Country Music night in the Spring, anyone?) The Trustees did important work at their meeting, including the adoption of a budget for 2026 and the approval of the National General Liability Insurance Policy. The latter is a big deal. When we raised the annual dues a few years ago, this was one of the projects targeted with the additional funding. I am proud that the SAR has now delivered on that promise. I hope that this program will free up time and money at the chapter and state levels so that you can do even more to advance the objectives of the SAR in your local communities. Please thank Treasurer General Brooks Lyles, Insurance and Risk Management Committee Chairman Hilton Martin, and the members of his committee for their hard work to bring this program across the finish line.

In advance of our Veterans Day observance in November, I was pleased to announce the latest example of the SAR’s commitment to serving our veterans: membership in Face the Fight, a coalition of corporations, foundations, nonprofit and veteran-focused organizations joined together to raise awareness and support for veteran suicide prevention. I challenged Veterans Committee Chairman Col. Patrick Niemann and his committee to raise $10,000 to take us from the community partnership level to the philanthropic partnership level, and they had done it by the end of the leadership meeting. Our support will help the coalition’s efforts to break the stigmas surrounding veteran suicide and save the lives of men and women who have served our country. As the descendants of America’s first veterans, we honor their sacrifices by supporting today’s veterans. This is a truly meaningful partnership of which we can all be proud.

At our Headquarters in Louisville, we have a new Executive Director: Phil Bloyd. He has done outstanding work as Executive Director of the SAR Foundation (a title he will continue to hold), and he has done a great job leading the Headquarters staff through a transition period.

I made no secret of my intention to make changes at Headquarters, and I am very pleased with the results to date. Morale is up, merchandise sales are up, and the application backlog has started to come down. I believe we will continue to see great things from our dedicated staff members in the months and years ahead.

SAR Education Center and Museum by funding the gallery dedicated to the George Washington’s leadership during the Newburgh Conspiracy.

This is an important part of our effort to celebrate 250 years of American independence and leadership. If nothing else, take pity on her because she has to live with me! She has set a goal of $15,000 for her project.

Second, you are invited to join us in May on the SAR trip to the United Kingdom and Bermuda. We will honor the British ancestry of our founding fathers, visit with the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, and celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Bermuda Gunpowder Plot. We will also eat extremely well throughout! Details can be found in this magazine. You will not want to miss this trip.

Finally, I invite you to join us in Greensboro, North Carolina, next July for our 136th Congress. Even if you are new to the SAR, you will find a ready welcome and make fast friends from all over the nation at our premier annual event. It’s a great way to learn about all the various ways that the SAR promotes patriotism, serves our communities and educates and inspires future generations about the founding principles of our Country. Our North Carolina compatriots have been planning the event for years, and I think it’s going to be our best Congress yet.

I hope you are enjoying our new “From The Desk Of” articles. In this edition, we are adding an article from Historian General Jeff Thomas.

This will give you five articles from your elected leaders.

Over the past few months, the Executive Leadership has been busy. I have included topics that have been discussed and acted on by the Executive Committee for your review. We want to make sure we maintain transparency with our members.

I would like to highlight two objectives on which we are working and need your help to accomplish.

Two are operational objectives under Strategic Goal #6.

Operational Goal B is to fund and digitize the member application process from submission to approval by 2027.

This includes the digitization of all the past applications and their supporting documentation. This is going to require funding above that generated by the Alexander

Hamilton Fund. I proposed a new Special Operating Fund called the IT Records Digitization Fund at the Oct. 27 Executive Committee meeting.

Do you know that you can donate directly to all our various Special Operating funds through our website? Just click on the Donate button located on the upper right of the main page, select the amount of your donation, select One Time or Recurring, then select the Special Purpose Fund.

It’s that easy. I have personally donated $1,000 to the IT fund. Won’t you join me by helping fund the Digitization and the IT funds?

You may be aware we sell copies of applications and supporting documents which generate revenue for us. By digitizing the remaining 3.5 million documents, this will allow us to generate additional revenue for our society while at the same time helping prospective members find the documents they need to join us. Completing the paperless application process will save all our chapters and state societies money by eliminating postage for mailing applications to National.

This will also help reduce some of the issues we sometimes have by making sure all the signatures and other required items are done before allowing the application to move to the next step in the process.

I encourage each of you to attend your local chapter meetings. By becoming involved in your communities with our SAR, you will be encouraging others to join us.

Remember, we need you! Get active and let’s have fun!

How can you contribute to the successful execution of the SAR’s mission? How can you help enhance our growth, efficiency and effectiveness across all echelons of the organization? How do we implement a “Paperless Application” program, provide adequate funding for Headquarters staffing, support youth programs, and advance our educational, historical and patriotic objectives as outlined in our Congressional Charter?

The first essential step is to renew your membership and pay your dues promptly. Membership dues are crucial to sustaining the operations of our organization. As a nonprofit, our focus is on service rather than profit; any surplus funds at year-end are reinvested into the operating budget or used to retire accrued debt. Your national dues support HQ staff salaries, national marketing efforts, certificates, awards and other daily operational expenses.

State society dues cover the cost of supporting national programs—such as youth awards, education outreach, chartering new chapters and conducting state-level events—while chapter dues fund similar activities, grave markings, local events and 250th Anniversary projects.

Membership applications are crucial to growth, as they generate dues-paying members and directly support the salary of our genealogy staff. An increase in application volume enables us to expand our staff, expedite approvals and reduce processing backlogs. Conversely, a decline in membership necessitates reductions in staffing and programming, with effects cascading through all levels of the SAR. Membership retention begins at the chapter level, where it is imperative to foster meaningful engagement and a

“sense of belonging.” People want to be wanted and to feel they are a part of something bigger than themselves.

We also require active participation from our members.

The unique skills and experiences you bring—whether at the chapter, state, district or national level—are invaluable.

Individuals with expertise in advertising, marketing, education, military service, information technology, accounting and fundraising are particularly needed to advance our various initiatives, from public outreach to IT integration and financial stewardship. Commitment to our mission is demonstrated not only through service but also by embodying the values expressed in the SAR Mission Statement.

Finally, individual donor and corporate sponsorship support remains vital for achieving our long-term objectives. While ongoing recruitment and retention ensure positive membership trends continue, our existing duesbased operating budget is primarily allocated to day-to-day functions and debt repayment. The result is a funding gap between what we want to do and what we can afford to do. We call this the Unfunded Requirements List. This list details known priorities within our Strategic and Operational Plans that are fundamental to the future progression of the SAR that we simply cannot afford to do … yet.

While significant support has been given to the SAR’s Education Center and Museum, we also need contributions from those whose primary interests lie elsewhere—be it youth programs, educational outreach, the Genealogical Research Library or information technology. For instance, substantial efforts are being made in IT modernization, including the implementation of a paperless application system and enhancements to our membership database and dues billing process. Donors interested in IT modernization or any of these other programs may contribute to the Alexander Hamilton Endowment Fund or for immediate impact, the newly established IT Fund.

Our vision for the SAR is clearly stated in our Five-Year Operational and Ten-Year Strategic plans. To realize these objectives, we rely on the continued support, expertise and dedication of our members. Together, we can transform this shared vision into reality.

Louisville, we have a problem.

The storage vault holding the supporting documentation for approved applications is full.

We need to make plans to clean it out as we approve about 160 applications per week, with approximately ½ inch of documentation per application.

Because this concern is not on the President General’s list to be worked this year, the cost is not included in the Treasurer General’s Unfunded Requirements List.

However, Secretary General Greenly has indicated the digitization of the supporting documentation will be added to the unfinished projects from PG Elston’s seven primary areas of concern.

The Operational Plan 2030 is our guide: Strategic Goal #6: Internal Operations – Provide the necessary resources and infrastructure to support members and staff in accomplishing our goals. [Treasurer General] C. Fund and digitize the member application process from submission to approval by 2027.

1) Standardize the application form.

2) Digitize supporting documents.

3) Marketing of online access to the PRS and supporting documentation for record copies.

D. Fund the completion of the membership database, including all members, Patriot Ancestors, record copies and grave locations, by 2030.

1) Digitize and index all current paper records and supplement funding with record copy fees when possible.

2) Upgrade genealogist and registrar staff computer equipment where needed.

3) We have identified the concern, but we need to find a path to solve the problem.

We have a couple of national committees, the Records Digitization Committee and the Genealogical Research System Committee, that have been digesting this and offering possible solutions. It is estimated that there are over 1,123 linear feet of documents to be scanned. This equates to about 3.5 million pages. We could: 1. Coordinate with Family Search – The company will scan for free, but they would retain the rights 10

to publish the information.

From former GG Jim Faulkinbury: “In earlier discussions with Family Search, they would only be able to index the names but not anything else, including some method of flagging documents that cannot be released to the public as private (recent vital records) or proprietary (DAR/C.A.R. RCs used as documentation).

Their filming in the 1990s included these records which are still available to the public online at any Family History branch library.”

2. Hire more staff: a. One staff member to scan using the existing scanner; 12 years to accomplish the task at $35,000-$40,000 per year ($420,00$600,000). This option does not index the documents except by Patriot and application. b. Another staff member whose sole job is to

scan the incoming documents and index by

approved, or c. Use volunteers to edit the scanned

documents after they are scanned and index

by hand. d. Reconfigure the current online application

to add digital supporting documentation;

that would require us to request an estimate

of the number of hours to reconfigure and

pay $135 per hour to make it happen.

3. Hire a Louisville local company to scan, index and return to SAR ($450,000). The time to complete this task is estimated to be 7-8 months.

We will need to obtain funds to make this project work; alternatives include: 1. Retain 9,000 members over four years, i.e., reduce the number of drops by 2,250 per year for the next four years.

2. Borrow $450,000 on a line of credit from the bank to be paid back using dues generated by the retention of members.

3. Ask our existing members to use the SAR website to donate to the IT Special Purpose Fund with the donation specifically for the Digitization Project — $450,000 required: a. 450 donors at $1,000 each. b. 4,500 donors at $100 each.

4. Sell the indexed supporting documents to interested genealogy researchers with limitations concerning privacy of those in generations 1-4 as well as proprietary documents such as DAR or C.A.R. application record copies.

Louisville, we have identified the problem and some alternative solutions. Are there other solutions to the problem? Please advise!

By now, it should be obvious that the 2030 Operational Plan (OP 2030) is the focus of SAR leadership. I trust you are receiving updates from your National trustees, state officers and various newsletters. In my previous article, I outlined the portion of OP 2030 under the purview of the Registrar General. It includes OP 1. A, B, C and D. Let’s explore this plan in more detail.

OP 1A. Develop and implement a comprehensive National online onboarding program by 2026 whereby all societies have access to the onboarding program for new members. At the 2025 Congress, this program was in place but contained some deficiencies. It was immediately apparent the onboarding instructional video was subpar and needed to be replaced. Several conversations with the new Membership chairman, Phil Hunt, resulted in the formation of a small ad hoc team lead by Steve Hinson.

Within weeks, a new instructional video was drafted, narrated and posted to the website. Thank you, Phil and Steve! Now we can feel more confident directing our new members to the onboarding page, where they can easily create their own account: www.sar.org/new-memberonboarding.

Additional work in this area is proceeding. The Registrar General welcome letter directs all new members to the website. I request encouragement at the chapter level to help your new compatriots gain access to the website and its extensive resources. We are developing benchmarks and methodologies to assess participation in the onboarding program. This will include exploring similar efforts by the DAR, C.A.R., Society of Cincinnati and other societies.

OP 1B. Increase membership retention to 95 percent through increased participation in SAR programs at the national, district, state and local levels by 2030.

Intermediate goals have also been established. We are on track to meet these goals, with the most recent figure from 2024 at 87.8 percent. Retention is a key focal point in our efforts to reach our membership goals. You will be receiving more guidance from National as we work toward training modules to be available through SAR University.

OP 1C. Establish a 3 percent annual net membership growth by 2028. It will come as no surprise that this FALL 2025

critical Operational Goal is lagging well behind. Past figures tell a bleak story. 2022: 0.65 percent; 2023: 0.92 percent; 2024: -0.60 percent. Key personnel are aware of this situation, and the PG, general officers and National chairmen are actively working the problem. We are also fully aware the solution must come from individual chapters and compatriots. We have a wonderful organization, and we are building it up stronger to meet the needs of future generations. We need your help to spread the word and share with others the joy, satisfaction and purpose you have experienced in the SAR. National can offer resources, but the work is yours.

OP 1D. Appeal to the values expressed in the mission statement and core SAR/American values and principles to attract, train, involve and retain members to aggressively grow our membership by 2030.

This is perhaps the most complex component of OP Goal #1. While it certainly references and supports OP 1C, it also contains a myriad of features that stretch far beyond.

Briefly, the National Membership Committee will establish annual targets for recruitment and retention. The committee will create tools and best practices to support the chapters. The Education Committee will bolster the success with ongoing officer training at all levels through SAR University. OP 1D also calls for growth goals in the number of chapters by 3 percent per year and the number of Junior members by 5 percent per year. In addition, the Council of State Presidents and the Council of VPGs will conduct an annual reinstatement program to re-engage inactive members.

Of all the OP Goal #1 objectives, PG Elston has identified OP 1D (2) as one of his top seven priorities. This may represent our “Mount Everest” from a membership standpoint. OP 1D (2) create and implement a digital/ paperless online membership application as soon as possible, but no later than June 1, 2027. This project has been under development for several years. Now its precedence has been advanced and efforts redoubled.

Moving us into the 21st century, a paperless application reduces mailing costs, personnel resources, storage demands and processing time. The single greatest need to achieve this goal is funding. A Special Purpose Operating Fund has been established for information technology purposes. I am calling on state societies, local chapters and individual compatriots to contribute to this fund.

Jeffrey D. Thomas Historian General

The 250th Anniversary is upon us. We will soon celebrate the anniversary of our nation’s founding. I hope you are as excited and inspired as I am about the opportunity this represents for our society. During this time, our new Strategic and Operational Plan presents a compelling vision for what we want to achieve in our historical and educational mission.

My objectives as Historian General include working to execute our strategic and operational plans, extend our historical and educational mission, expand partnerships and public engagement, and educate and inspire future generations about our country’s founding principles.

To that end, there are several ways that compatriots in our states and chapters can help us achieve our strategic objectives for historical programs in the coming year. I would like to focus specifically on Strategic Goal 2A, which has relevance for both our historical and 250th anniversary programs. The Historian General is the responsible General Officer for this goal, working in partnership with the Council of State Presidents and the America 250 Committee.

Strategic Goal 2A is to commemorate the people, events and documents of the American Revolution by promoting and growing public engagement in our ceremonies.

This strategic goal has five specific operational objectives in which compatriots in our states and chapters take a leading role in helping us achieve our strategic plan.

First, states and chapters will support SAR 250 signature national events each year with a parallel event that they sponsor in partnership with local historical, veteran and/or civic organizations. The America 250 Committee has published SAR America 250 Planning Guides to provide the resources for states and chapters to sponsor these parallel events. These planning guides were produced in 2025 for Lexington and Concord and for the Army-Navy-Marines 250 events and will be produced in 2026 to support the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. I would encourage you to plan and 12

promote these 250th parallel events so that we can speak with one voice in our communities across the country. Let us know about your participation by reporting the events that you sponsor to sar250events@gmail.com.

Second, states and chapters will develop their signature event, which is one annual event that they will be known for in their local community, which will help us build the SAR brand in communities across the country and help facilitate partnerships with other community organizations that will maximize our impact. The America 250 committee will provide resources to support this objective.

Third, states and chapters will work with other local groups to post 250th Anniversary markers in our communities. Our SAR 250 marker programs are the 250 memorial bench and Liberty Tree initiatives. Our goal is to place at least one marker in each state society, with a total of 250 trees for the 250th.

We are asking each state to pick up the mantle and promote these programs so we can achieve this objective.

Fourth, states and chapters will participate in state and local 250 commissions to promote SAR commemorative events. Many of these 250 commissions will expire after the semiquincentennial celebration, so the time is now to plug into these planning commissions. Let us know about your success in this objective.

Lastly, the SAR will partner with the DAR, C.A.R., and other groups to plan, promote and participate in a joint 250th Anniversary celebration on Fourth of July 2026.

Plans are underway for a grand SAR celebration from July 2-6, 2026, in Philadelphia, America’s birthplace. Events include the official Salute to Independence Parade, an SAR Independence Day 250 Gala Dinner, and a five-Patriot grave-marking ceremony for Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Make plans today to take part in these and other SAR Philadelphia 250 programs, tours and social activities. Our call to arms is “50 for the 250th,” with all 50 societies represented and all 50 society flags hoisted in the official parade. Will you be there? Hotel reservations are open now and can be found on the SAR website calendar.

Event registration will open prior to Spring 2026 Leadership.

In closing, all compatriots can assist us in getting the word out across our states and chapters about these important historical and 250th Anniversary objectives. Our success is dependent on how effectively we communicate these strategic objectives to our membership. The time is now to seize the opportunity of the 250th Anniversary and live our mission. You play a critical role in that success.

South Central District Holds Its Annual Conference for 2025

n Friday and Saturday, Aug. 22-23, the South Central District held its Annual Conference for 2025 at the Folds of Honor National Headquarters located in Owasso, Okla. Vice President General Phil Hunt (SCD) presided over the conference, which the Oklahoma Society hosted.

President General Michael Elston, and the presidents of the Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas societies were in attendance. On Friday evening, 10 candidates for various NSSAR officers delivered campaign speeches, followed by dinner. A speech given by PG Elston closed the evening. On Saturday morning, the America 250th Anniversary Bench and Liberty Tree Dedication was held on the front lawn of the Folds of Honor National Headquarters. VPG Hunt led the dedication ceremony. PG Elston; Jeffrey Thomas, chairman of the America 250 Committee, NSSAR; and Michelle Landes, regional impact officer, Folds of Honor, gave dedication messages, followed by a Liberty Tree reading by Kristin Meilahn, C.A.R. Oklahoma state president. A musket salute followed, presented by the SCD Color Guard. An SCD business meeting then concluded the conference.

The 136th Annual National Congress

A NORTH CAROLINA CONGRESS The 2026 Congress convenes in Greensboro, N.C., July 9-16 Invitation The North Carolina Society is honored to invite you to the 136th Annual Congress, to be held from July 9-16, 2026, in Greensboro, N.C., which is named for Gen. Nathanael Greene, who commanded Continental and Militia soldiers in the Southern Colonies.

Next year’s Congress will feature a historical celebration of our shared commitment to the purpose of our National Society to “promote patriotism, preserve American history, and educate future generations.”

While at the Congress, you will have an opportunity to get engaged in multiple Revolutionary-focused tours and five grave-marking events. We encourage you to visit the Carolinas before or after the Congress and explore the major battles that defeated Great Britain’s “Southern Campaign,” which led to the seminal victory at Yorktown on Oct. 19, 1781. This Southern Campaign attempted to subdue the South and recruit badly needed troops for their dwindling army in the Northern Colonies. The southern partisans had other ideas.

Historical Background North Carolinians were resistant to the murderous tactics of the British army at Lexington and Concord. However, internal feuds sprang up between those who wished to stay loyal to King George and those who wished to rebel. The partisans in Mecklenburg County at Charlottetown established a set of declarations and resolves to separate completely from the Crown in May-June of 1775. Other

counties, such as those in the county seats of Salisbury and New Bern, crafted resolves to resist the despicable behavior of Parliament and the British army but remain loyal to the King. This feud was politically settled by North Carolina with the Halifax Resolves in April of 1776, when N.C. was the first Colony to unanimously support the Revolution.

British Commander Gen. Henry Clinton led an expeditionary flotilla in 1778 to capture Savannah, Ga., followed by the siege and capture of Charleston, S.C., in 1779

by Gen. Charles Cornwallis. The British had several quick victories, including the massacre of the Continental Col. Abraham Buford’s troops by Col. Banastre Tarleton at the battle of the Waxhaw’s and Gen. Cornwallis’ victory against Gen. Horatio Gates in the large battle at Camden, S.C. In 1780, about 1,000 American militia from Georgia, Virginia and the Carolinas won the pivotal battle of Kings Mountain in October against Major Patrick Ferguson and his 1,000 Loyalists.

The tide of victory shifted to the partisans of the South. Three

months later, American Gen. Dan Morgan and his 1,900 Continental and Militia troops defeated Banastre Tarleton’s 1,200 troops in January 1781 at the crushing battle of the Cowpens.

In March 1781, the battle of Guilford Courthouse commenced between Gen. Greene and his 4,000 troops against Gen. Cornwallis and his 2,100 Regulars. Most historians proclaim it was “a tactical victory for Cornwallis and a strategic triumph for Greene.” This battle severely weakened the strength of the British army in the South, and Cornwallis later led his troops to Yorktown, Va., to their fateful demise.

Col. Thomas L. Hickerson Recipient of the SAR Gold Citizenship Medal

C

ol. Thomas L. Hickerson has joined a special elite group consisting of past U.S. presidents, U.S. senators, generals, John Wayne and Walt Disney. On Saturday, Oct. 18, the NSSAR awarded its Gold Citizenship Award to Hickerson for his service in the U.S. Air Force and for his heroic leadership in keeping strategic military communications going after a plane crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11. This represents only the ninth Tennessee presentation of this highest honor since 1960. He is also a member of the Air Force Cyberspace Operations and Support Hall of Fame.

The Stones River Chapter, TNSSAR (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) is honored and pleased to have Col. Hickerson as a member and officer.

The NSSAR Gold Good Citizenship Medal is awarded for outstanding and unusual patriotic achievement and service of national importance to people of prominence on a national level in the areas of government (including military service), religion, education, business and other fields of endeavor.

With the Americans besieging the British in Boston following Lexington and Concord, both sides looked for an advantage. The British found themselves outnumbered and unable to break out of the city, while the Americans could not dislodge the British army supported by the guns of the Royal Navy. The Americans decided to enter nearby Charlestown on the night of June 16th, 1775, and to fortify it. This would have tightened the noose around Boston but the American commander chose to fortify Breed’s Hill. The British assaulted the following afternoon after the Americans were subject to a naval bombardment, and due to the confusion on ,the rebel side the outnumbered Americans withdrew.

While not an American victory, the Battle of Bunker’s Hill was devastating for the British.

Forty percent of the Redcoats who fought were casualties.

T

he scene has become a familiar and heartening one.

Whether I’m in a historic small-town movie palace in Tennessee, a law school in California, a packed highschool auditorium in rural Michigan, or a 1,000-seat university theater in North Carolina, the feeling is the same. I am on the road with my new feature film, The American Constitution, crisscrossing the heartland on a mission to connect with fellow Americans about our shared origin story. The pace is relentless—in Ohio, our partnership with the America 250 Ohio Commission has resulted in a whirlwind 10 events in as many days—and the energy from audiences is profoundly inspiring.

This journey, however, didn’t begin a few weeks ago.

Over 15 years ago, I was searching for my next film project after finding success with a documentary for PBS stations about the origins of manned flight called Kitty Hawk: The Wright Brothers’ Journey of Invention. My new project began with a simple question sparked by a gift: a small book of the U.S. Constitution. As I read it, I was struck by the power of words but also by a glaring omission in my education. I knew of the document, but I didn’t know the story. Who were these men, really? What debates, passions and fears drove them through that sweltering summer of 1787? I realized that if I was missing this crucial human drama, millions of other Americans were, too.

That realization launched a mission grounded in a principle James Madison articulated in 1822: “A people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives.” I believed then, as I do now, that in our time of deep division, dramatizing our shared origin story in an entertaining, non-partisan film is a powerful way to enhance the public’s fundamental understanding of the document that binds us.

The path to creating the film was a marathon of persistence. The initial challenge was immense: how to turn the dense, formal notes from the Constitutional Convention into a compelling human drama without inventing a single word. My rule from day one was that every word spoken by the Framers had to be sourced directly from the historical records—their notes, diaries and letters. This commitment to authenticity became my North Star.

For years, I worked to assemble the resources, facing countless rejections for funding. It was a lonely, often difficult road, but the conviction that this story needed to be told kept me going. Slowly, a coalition of believers came together, and we began the intricate process of production.

We gathered a superb cast of actors who embraced the challenge of breathing life into historical giants such as George Washington, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and the ever-witty Benjamin Franklin. On set, the atmosphere was electric. The actors weren’t just reciting lines; they were channeling the weight of a nation’s future, wrestling with ideas that would change the world.

To ensure historical accuracy, we collaborated with more than a dozen of our nation’s foremost experts on the Constitution. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Gordon SAR MAGAZINE

Wood, along with renowned scholars Carol Berkin and Akhil Reed Amar, provided invaluable guidance. Our lead historian, Harvard Law’s Dr. Michael Klarman, became an essential partner in the project and recruited half a dozen of his law students to help hone the film’s narrative. In addition, several high-school educators committed to piloting the film in their classrooms in Connecticut, Florida and Tennessee. We have a commitment from a major distributor to broadcast the film to PBS stations in the fall of 2026.

The real magic is happening on the road, in the conversations that follow each road show screening.

This National Roadshow has become a traveling forum for civic engagement—a safe space for dialogue. In town after town, I witness Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs lean in, ask profound questions and connect with their own history. In Ventura, Calif., Dean Andrea Funk of the Colleges of Law called the event “creative, engaging and timely.”

These are not sterile academic discussions. They are vibrant, deeply personal conversations about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. The enthusiasm is a powerful reminder that there is a deep hunger across our nation for substantive, non-partisan dialogue about who we are.

As our nation looks toward its semiquincentennial anniversary, this grassroots effort is more critical than ever, and your chapters are uniquely positioned to lead this charge in your communities. Return of the Hermione The Hermione is a 32-gun, Concorde-class frigate completed in Rochefort, France, in 2014. It is a reproduction of the 1779 Hermione, which returned Lafayette to America in April 1780 with the much-anticipated news that an Expeditionary Force under the command of Gen. Rochambeau would soon arrive. The Hermione is currently in dry dock near Bayonne, France, undergoing refurbishment for an anticipated return to service during the last quarter of 2025.

New Tax Laws May Impact Charitable Giving

R

ecent tax law changes, introduced by the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” may affect how many contribute to program’s such as the SAR Foundation’s 1776 or Liberty Tree campaigns.

Since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act increased the standard deduction in 2017, only about 10 percent of households itemize deductions, making them ineligible for charitable giving tax deductions. Starting in 2026, however, a reinstated deduction will allow those not using itemized deductions to deduct charitable cash donations.

Married couples filing jointly can deduct up to $2,000, while single filers are limited to $1,000. The new legislation caps the tax benefits of itemized charitable deductions at 35 percent, even for those in the 37 percent marginal tax bracket.

Also starting in 2026, those using itemized deductions

who make charitable contributions will only be able to claim a tax deduction to the extent that it exceeds 0.5 percent of their adjusted gross income (AGI).

BENEFITS OF QCD A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is a direct transfer of funds from the custodian of an individual retirement account to a qualified charity. A QCD can count as one’s annual required minimum distribution, and it is excluded from taxable income.

As an above-the-line deduction, the QCD is not subject to the 0.5 percent AGI floor, so 100 percent of your contribution maintains a quality of life reflective of your selfless service. Qualified charitable distributions are one of several ways to give.

QCD gift will reduce your income for tax purposes.

fter George Washington served more than eight years as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and eight years as president, sharing a quiet meal together must have been a welcome luxury for the Washingtons. From fighting for meager rations for the troops to hosting sumptuous banquets for diplomats, the Washingtons experienced the wide range of foods consumed during the Revolutionary era. Whether meals were prepared in grand kitchens or around a campfire, 18th-century cooks were often doing their best with the ingredients and cookware available.

Even when cooking in ideal conditions, an 18th-century chef would be astounded by the year-round ingredients and kitchen gadgets available today. Ingredients available to domestic cooks were limited by the seasons and geography. These factors may have played a role in there being relatively few published cookbooks, with household cooks typically relying on recipes passed down through oral tradition or recorded in ledgers. A recipe, however, could only come together through a skilled cook using able cookware.

Ian Cunningham, Ohio Society, donated an 18th-century bell-metal posnet or skillet that would have been the envy

of period chefs. Cast in bell-metal (80 percent copper and 20 percent tin), this posnet had superior heat-control properties compared to iron cookware but cost about 10 times as much. This highly versatile piece of cookware could fry, boil or stew.

The discerning 18th-century chef also relied on simpler food preparation tools such as the period pothook donated

by Diane Ungvarsky, Kansas SAR Ladies Auxiliary, in memory of Theresa Klotzbach. Such hooks allowed cooks to closely manage temperature while cooking on an open hearth by altering the height of a pot over the coals, or to retrieve pots from near the flames. Although a simple implement, pothooks were vital for any kitchen. More ornate in design but filling a common need in the kitchen were standing or “Scottish” broilers. These broilers could be propped up near the coals to toast bread or roast meat.

The example in the SAR Collection was also donated by Ian Cunningham and exhibits a high level of early American ironwork.

Dining options for those serving in the Continental Army were also limited by the seasons, as well as by the talents of the quartermaster. Continental Congress determined the following rations for soldiers: “One pound of fresh beef, or ¾ of a pound of Pork, or one pound of Salt Fish, pr diem. One pound of Bread, or Flour pr diem. Three pints of Peas, or Beans pr Week, or Vegetables equivalent …

One pint of milk pr Man, pr diem, when to be had. One half pint of Rice, or one pint of Indian meal pr Man, pr Week. One quart of Spruce Beer per man, pr diem.” Such rations were seldom delivered, and soldiers often relied on foraging or purchasing provisions.

Steuben ordered: “The utensils belonging to the tents are to be carried alternately by the men ... The soldiers should not be permitted to eat in their tents, except in bad weather; and an officer of a company must often visit the messes; see that the provision is good and well cooked; that the men of one tent mess together; and that the provision is not sold or disposed of for liquor …” To ensure soldiers would “mess together,” each group of six men was issued a pot or kettle for cooking. This prompted them to use what ingredients they had to make soup or stew, rather than fry their food, which was considered wasteful. The kettles were made of tin to be lightweight and easier to carry on the march, but this also made them fragile, and few examples survive today.

Another type of cookware often used in camp was a gridiron or broiler, such as the example donated by Tony Robinson, Ohio SAR. Similar examples have been recovered from Revolutionary War sites. Soldiers could use gridirons to roast or toast food but were more likely to set their kettles on them to cook over the coals.

Each of the pieces of cookware discussed in this article were used in 18th-century homes, but soldiers in the field had to consider weight and utility when choosing their equipment. If you have 18th-century cookware in your collection, please consider donating it to the SAR. Examination of the food and cookware available promotes better understanding of the experiences of the Revolutionary generation.

On the 250th anniversary of American independence, this study by Pulitzer Prize– winning scholar Edward J. Larson examines the ideas and sacrifices of 1776—a pivotal year that shifted public sentiment from mostly loyalist grievances to widespread support for independence. Initially, most Colonists felt their rights as British subjects were threatened, but by year’s end, the tyranny of King George made independence seem essential. Larson traces key moments, from Paine’s inspiring “Common Sense” in January, which advocated for independence rooted in human rights, to the incorporation of revolutionary principles into state constitutions.

In 1776, the words of American Patriots helped the nation overcome its first crisis. The Declaration of Independence marked the birth of the U.S., but two essays from that era resonated the most: Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” and “The American Crisis.”

Published in January 1776, “Common Sense” challenged monarchy and convinced Americans they could govern themselves, transforming a tax rebellion into a full-scale revolution. Paine later enlisted as a militia private, witnessing George Washington’s army face defeats. He then wrote “The American Crisis,” which inspired soldiers.

Reinvigorated, Washington’s troops crossed the Delaware and secured a victory at Trenton, shifting the war’s momentum.

The Killing of Jane McCrea: An American Tragedy on the Revolutionary Frontier by Paul Staiti (Westholme) ISBN 978-1594164460, 272 pages (10/17/25) $30.

On July 26, 1777, Jane McCrea, a 25-year-old preparing for marriage, was tragically killed by Native Americans allied with British forces during the Revolutionary War. Although one among many civilian tragedies, her death had profound effects on all parties involved. In America, she became a symbol of the righteous cause; in Britain, her murder highlighted moral decline and fueled political outrage. For Native peoples, her killing marked the beginning of retribution that contributed to the disintegration of the Iroquois Confederacy and the loss of their lands.

The Last Men Standing: The 8th Virginia Regiment in the American Revolution

by Gabriel Neville (Helion) ISBN 978-1804516720, 416 pages (6/30/25) $55.

Nearly 800 men, led by Col. Peter Muhlenberg, joined the Continental Army in 1776, but few survived until the war’s end. This narrative highlights immigrant soldiers from Virginia’s western regions, especially those in the 8th Virginia Regiment, who often were sent into harsh battles. Neville was challenged to uncover this overlooked history, which he accomplished by exploring archives, museums and private collections. The book traces the lives of immigrant children from the French and Indian War through the Revolution and frontier settlement.

The trip begins with your arrival in London, England, on May 4. Among the areas of interest you will visit in the United Kingdom are Highclere Castle, known for its “starring role” in the television series Downton Abbey; the cathedral city of Gloucester, where we will conduct a wreath-laying ceremony honoring Button Gwinnett, a Gloucester native and signer of the Declaration of Independence; Sir Winston Churchill’s ancestral home, Blenheim Palace, and Churchill’s gravesite for a wreathlaying ceremony; Oxford, the “City of Dreaming Spires” and home to the world-famous university; Sulgrave Manor, the ancestral home of George Washington’s family; the Ben Franklin House in London; and All Hallows-by-the-Tower,

which has connections to William Penn, who was born in London.

From London, we will travel to Bermuda and stay at the lush, tropical Grotto Bay Beach Resort and Spa. While on the scenic island, we will honor those involved in the Gunpowder Plot of 1775 with a private re-enactment of the event that played a crucial role in the American Revolutionary War. We will pay tribute at Tobacco Beach to those who perished in the event with a wreath-laying ceremony followed by a walking tour of the town of St. George.

The group will depart from Bermuda on May 14.

Revolutionary War Veteran’s Grave Discovered

“Chester”

Music of the American Revolution

T

he second most popular song in the American Colonies during the American Revolution was “Chester,” second only to “Yankee Doodle.” One explanation for the song’s popularity during the Revolution is its strong religious conviction, which aligned with the American view of the Revolution as a crusade.

Although “Chester” was extremely well liked during the American Revolution, today, few people outside the 18th-century re-enacting community are familiar with the song.

The word “Chester” comes from the Old English and Latin words for “military camp” or “fortified position.” It was arbitrarily selected as the song’s name, as it was a widespread practice at the time to name tunes after a place that had nothing to do with the theme or lyrics of the song.

The disconnect between the name and message of the song was intentional, so that the tune could be applied to different lyrics, which again was a widespread practice with music at that time.

“Chester” was written by William Billings in 1770 and was published in his songbook entitled The New-England Psalm-Singer. This songbook was the first book of songs completely composed in America. “Chester” quickly rose in popularity and became known as the “anthem” of American opposition to British policies in North America.

Billings, a Boston native, was not only America’s first choral composer but also America’s first professional composer. Billings was a tanner by trade, but more significantly, he was a self-taught musician, songwriter and composer. At 24, he issued his first songbook, the aforementioned The New-England Psalm-Singer which contained 124 compositions. Billings was a highly regarded songwriter, publishing six songbooks containing hundreds of songs during his lifetime. Due to the copyright laws of 28

the time, he was unable to financially capitalize on the popularity of his music. Eventually, his style of music went out of favor. Tragically, he died in poverty at the age of 53 and was buried in an unmarked Boston grave.

“Chester” was the first genuinely patriotic song, with both the tune and lyrics written by an American in the American Colonies.

The original lyrics for “Chester” consisted of two stanzas which were very similar to the Psalms in both form and content. The original 1770 lyrics also applied common Puritan themes of trust in God and God’s protection of the righteous against any foe. This may have contributed to its initial popularity in Puritan New England, after which it spread to the other Colonies.

In 1778, Billings revised the song and published it in his second songbook The Singing Master’s Assistant. The revised “Chester” now consisted of five stanzas which bore a stronger patriotic message than the original. It is the 1778 version that is best known by those familiar with the song today.

The three stanzas added in 1778 were inserted between the original first and last stanzas of the 1770 version. These three new stanzas make references to battles and American triumphs. By this time, the American Revolution was earnestly underway.

In the second stanza of this version, British Generals Howe, Burgoyne, Clinton, Prescot and Cornwallis were SAR MAGAZINE

named. By 1778, when these lyrics were published, the Americans had achieved victories at the Siege of Boston and the battles at Montreal, Saratoga and Princeton. Each of the British generals named in this stanza was in command for one or more of these battles, thereby emphasizing the vulnerability of the British. The stanza continued with lyrics attributing these victories to the virtue of the American cause.

In the new third and fourth stanzas, additional references were made to the American Revolution. These two stanzas provided encouragement to the Americans by describing their cause as just and faithful. The victories of the young, inexperienced American soldiers over the older, experienced British veterans were submitted as evidence of the righteousness of the American cause.

After the American Revolution, the song became the de facto national anthem and remained that way for many years. Eventually, “Chester” slipped from public consciousness and, for the most part, was forgotten with the passage of time as more contemporary songs, such as “Hail Columbia” (1789), “The Star-Spangled Banner” (1814), and “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” (1831) displaced “Chester.”

Billings’ music, and more specifically “Chester,” was rediscovered by the public in 1956 when American composer William Schumann wrote his New England Triptych based on Billings’ works. The third part of this triptych was “Chester.” Schuman wrote in the preface to his New FALL 2025

England Triptych that “The works of this dynamic composer [Billings] capture the spirit of sinewy ruggedness, deep religiosity and patriotic fervor that we associate with the Revolutionary period”.

The popularity of “Chester” today has not risen to the level it experienced during the American Revolution.

However, it has become well ingrained in the consciousness of 18th-century re-enactors, historians and students of early American music, establishing its place in history as a uniquely American patriotic song.

The Achilles Heel of the British Navy During the Revolution

T

he Patriots of the American Revolution recognized that it would be an asymmetrical war with the British Empire. The British had an overwhelming preponderance of professional military forces on the land and especially at sea. The British Navy was pivotal to their ability to successfully prosecute a war in America. The Navy’s “Achilles Heel” was pine tar, which was critical to building and maintaining wooden sail-powered ships.

Shortages of tar would also impact commercial shipping and the trade underpinning military power. The outbreak of the Revolution cut off the primary source of the Navy’s supply: the Colonies.

The Navy originally had sourced this material from areas around the Baltic Sea. However, European wars could cut this supply when needed most. The Colonies offered what was assumed to be a secure source, and bounties were paid to encourage production. Exports to Britain fell from 78,358 barrels in 1775 to 4,828 barrels in 1776 and to 216 barrels in 1777. In response, Britain encouraged production in Florida, which it had obtained after the Seven Years War. However, the production only reached 2,241 barrels by 1777, leaving an acute shortage.

Given this shortage, the weaker American military was alert to any opportunity to deny the Navy a supply of tar.

In 1777, Capt. John Shipman was commander of Saybrook Fort, at the mouth of the Connecticut River, across the Long Island Sound from Long Island, N.Y., which the British occupied. In a letter dated May 1, 1777, he writes to the governor of Connecticut and the Council of Safety the following: N.B. We have intelligence from Long Island that at Southampton and Southold, there are sundry Tar Kilns burning to supply the British Navy with Tar. It is thought that it might be safely taken or destroyed 30

by a few men from the Main, which it is submitted to your Honor, as I apprehend, none has the right to attempt, but by your Honor’s Direction.

Your obedient Servant J.S. This opportunity was immediately seized, and a detailed special operations plan was devised and put into motion.

Brig. Gen. Samuel Holden Parsons details this successful operation in a letter to George Washington dated May 25, 1777 (see opposite page). This raid required much more than “a few men.” In its totality, this operation is an example of how a militarily weaker force wages asymmetrical warfare.

Given the primitive state of communications and transport at the time, it’s evident that this operation was based on the speed at which intelligence from “behind enemy lines” reached the top commander for action.

Gen. Parsons’ report reveals some other important aspects of this operation. The operational commander receives the latest intelligence during the operation. Meigs receives updated intelligence on the enemy’s strength and location at Sag Harbor upon arriving on the Southold beach. Probably, this is the same source that provided the original intelligence about the tar kilns. The primary key to success was the combat discipline of the soldiers to complete the mission despite coming under intense and prolonged enemy cannon fire at short range.

In short, this raid was carried out by what today would be called a special operations unit. Unfortunately, the workforce shortage in the Regular Army would only create units like this on an ad hoc basis, denying the benefits of unit cohesion that would be created in a permanently established special operations force.

New Haven, May 25th, 1777, Dear General, Having received information that the enemy were collecting forage, horses, &c., on the east end of Long Island, I ordered a detachment from the several regiments then at this place, consisting of one major, four captains, viz: Troop, Pond, Mansfield and Savage, and nine subalterns, and two hundred and twenty men, nonSAR MAGAZINE

degree, and that even the clothing and other articles belonging to the commissioned and privates, under the command of Col. Meigs, to prisoners, the soldiers, with a generosity not learned from British attack their different posts on that part of the Island, and destroy troops, have with great cheerfulness restored to them where they have forage, &c., which they had collected. Col. Meigs embarked his men fallen into their hands. here, in thirteen whale boats, the 21st inst., and proceeded to Guilford, Maj. Humphreys, who waits on your Excellency with the account, but the wind proving high and the sea rough, could not pass the Sound was in the action with Col. Troop, with the detachment under his command, secured the vessels and forage lying at the wharf. The alarm soon became general, when an armed schooner of twelve guns and seventy men, within one hundred fifty yards of the wharf, began a fire upon our troops, which continued without cessation for three-quarters of an hour, with grape and round shot, but the troops with the greatest intrepidity returned the fire upon the schooner and set fire to the vessels and forage and killed and captured all the soldiers and sailors, except about six, who made their escape under the cover of night. Twelve brigs and sloops, one an armed vessel with twelve guns, about one hundred and twenty tons of pressed hay, oats, corn and other forage, ten hogsheads of rum and a large quantity of other merchandise, were entirely consumed. It gives me the greatest satisfaction to hear the officers and soldiers without exception, behaved with the greatest bravery, order and intrepidity.

Col. Meigs having finished the business on which he was sent, returned safe with all his men to Guilford by two o’clock P.M. yesterday, with ninety prisoners, having in Portion of every purchase donated to twenty-five hours, by land and water, transported his men full ninety miles, and succeeded in his attempts beyond my SAR Foundation most sanguine expectations, without losing a single man, killed or wounded. ARIZONA SAR Palo Verde Chapter As the Chandler Town Council kicked off America 250 in September, the Palo Verde SAR and Sun Lakes DAR were well represented.

ARKANSAS SAR DeSoto Trace Chapter On Sept. 13, the DeSoto Trace Chapter inducted eight new members. Through the help of the DAR and the efforts of the new Registrar, the chapter has increased by a third since last year. Carl Flowers presented a great program on “The Original Rifleman, Daniel Morgan, the ‘Secret Weapon’ of the Continental Army.”

COLORADO SAR On July 4, members of the COSSAR and C.A.R. led the annual Foxfield Parade, which consisted of various organizations, both civic and volunteer, and many specialty floats.

In the front, carrying the SAR banner, were two C.A.R. members. In the next row were three flag bearers. They were followed by Drummer Mike Coyner, who led the color guard of Gary Mitchell, John Savage, Robert Guy and Chip Dawes.

Following the parade, the public was invited to a Fourth of July barbecue.

CONNECTICUT SAR On Sept. 13, the society planted and dedicated two Liberty Trees, above, part of the 250th SAR Liberty Tree Program. In the morning, the society dedicated a Liberty Tree at Eastford Elementary School in honor of the United States Constitution. This coincided with the school’s Constitution Week curriculum. In the afternoon, a second Liberty Tree was dedicated in honor of Major Gen. Israel Putnam at Putnam Elms (home of his son, Col. Daniel Putnam) in Brooklyn. The CTSSAR and its branches will have planted and dedicated nine Liberty Trees by year’s end, helping the SAR reach its goal of 250 Liberty Trees before America 250 on July 4, 2026.

GEORGIA SAR Brier Creek Artillery The Brier Creek Artillery participated in the Stephen Day grave-marking event sponsored by the William Few and Washington Wilkes chapters in Evans, Ga. The Aug. 2 event was held at the Evans Market next to Columbia County Performing Arts Center. More than 200 spectators attended.

Private John O’Quin served in the North Carolina Militia for 21 months (four tours) and fought at the Battle of Stono Ferry in South Carolina. O’Quin moved several times following the Revolutionary War, ending in what was Indian territory where he died and was buried.

The Idaho State Society participated in the State of Idaho’s America 250 in Idaho Kickoff celebration on Patriots’ Day, Sept. 17. Compatriots James Wellman and Randy Hudspeth led the salute to the flag during the celebration at the state capitol, cementing the partnership the SAR has with Idaho’s activities celebrating America 250.

On May 3, the society presented a proclamation to the USS Idaho Commissioning Committee chairman, Captain Marty Sattison.

ILLINOIS SAR General George Rogers Clark Chapter The morning of July 4, the chapter dedicated a Liberty Tree at the corner of West Cherry Street and Alton Road in Carlinville, Ill. As the Liberty Tree marker states, “We declare this California Redwood as our Liberty Tree and place this marker to recognize the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.”

KANSAS SAR Charles Robinson Chapter Chapter Compatriots and members of the Betty Washington Chapter DAR united to present a historical and educational program about the Declaration of Independence at CPA Park in Eudora on the morning of July 4.

Following a reading of the Declaration, the audience learned the copy signed was penned by Timothy Matlack, who was honored in early June by the Kansas DAR in Burrton, where a group of his descendants resides.

MASSACHUSETTS SAR Cape Cod and Islands Chapter

KENTUCKY SAR Simon Kenton Chapter More than 150 people, including 52 descendants of six Patriots’ families, attended an impressive grave-marking ceremony outside Augusta, Ky., above. Held in the restored Sharon Cemetery, the ceremony drew participants from Nevada to Massachusetts.

Compatriot Stuart Martin organized the event, which was extensively covered by The Bracken County News. Sixteen descendants of John Hamilton and 12 of Edward Poe made up much of the crowd, but Isaac Day, Andrew Dillman, William Harrod and Stephen Taylor were not without supporters. All enjoyed the music of the 35th Indiana Pipes & Drums.

The color guard included members of the Simon Kenton, Lafayette and Big Sandy chapters.

LOUISIANA SAR The Benjamin Tennille Chapter of Monroe and the James Huey Chapter of West Monroe attended Monroe’s Triangle Park Fourth of July Celebratio, above.

As a part of the chapter’s continuing commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution, the Cape Cod and Islands Chapter conducted a grave-marking ceremony for Patriot Micah Blackwell at the Old Town Cemetery of Sandwich on June 28, below. This grave marking highlighted the chapter’s two-month long public service program at the cemetery and provided an opportunity for the SAR to publicly tell the Town of Sandwich’s rich Revolutionary history.

Born Dec. 28, 1741, at Sandwich, Micah married Lydia Tobey on Nov. 23, 1766. The couple had six children, with five living to adulthood. A private in Capt. Ward Swift’s 2nd Militia Company, Micah marched with the 41-man company “in consequence of the Alarm on ye 19th of April 1775.” Micah later enlisted on Sept. 26, 1776, and served two months at Newport in the regiment of Col. John Cushing.

On Oct. 14, he was commissioned quartermaster in the battalion of Maj. Joseph Dimmick. Micah’s final military service came on Sept. 5, when a British fleet of 36 vessels with 4,000 troops anchored at Clark’s Cove at the southern tip of Dartmouth, Mass., with orders to destroy all aspects of Patriot privateering. With the alarm of Sept. 6 called, Capt. Swift’s 71-man militia company served eight days in defense of Dartmouth and Falmouth until the threat of the British fleet had passed. In the three years after the Falmouth alarm, Micah served the Town of Sandwich as selectman, aiding in furnishing food, clothing and war materials, until his death on Sept. 30, 1781.

Preceding Micah Blackwell’s grave-marking ceremony, 10 compatriots completed the chapter’s program to locate and clean the headstones and footstones of 43 Revolutionary War Patriots and their wives buried at Old Town Cemetery. Accumulating over 100-man hours during six consecutive Wednesdays, the “stone crew” brought to light 102 formerly lichen-encrusted gravestones, revealing their Patriot inscriptions.

MICHIGAN SAR Jeremiah Clark Chapter

The Jeremiah Clark Chapter in Clarkston, Mich., assisted by the Sashabaw Plains DAR, Elisa Crady C.A.R., Michigan Society C.A.R., MISSAR Color Guard, 1st Royal Artillery, Seven Years War and musicians conducted a Liberty Tree dedication on June 28, above. The planting of an Emerald Elm tree was the opening ceremony for the Veterans Independence Fest sponsored by Independence Township. The concept was led by Compatriot James Pabst.

MINNESOTA SAR The Minnesota SAR Living History Team had a busy April with four Patriot Chest presentations, the first being for the Fort Snelling DAR Chapter in Hastings, Minn.

Then came all the Scouting America units (formerly Boy Scouts of America) in the City of New Prague, Minn. Next was the fourth grade at Providence Academy in Plymouth, followed by the fourth grade at Southview Elementary in Apple Valley. This has been a great kick-off for the 250th Anniversary of the Revolutionary War. Living History Team members include Color Guard Commander Terry Sater, MNSSAR Treasurer Rick Smith, Team Leader Rich Howey and MNSSAR President Kevin Sullivan.

On Memorial Day, the MNSSAR Color Guard presented the colors along with a musket firing at Midland Hills Golf Club in Roseville, Minn., to support Folds of Honor.

The charity provides scholarships to families of deceased veterans.

The MNSSAR Color Guard also presented the Stars and Stripes, U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force colors at the Direct Commissioning ceremony of Lt. Courtney Mulhern/ U.S. Army at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System auditorium on June 21.

On Independence Day, the Minnesota Color Guard appeared on Twin Cities KMSP-TV FOX 9 and KSTPTV 5 ABC while presenting the colors and firing muskets for the National Society C.A.R. It was the C.A.R. Lake Minnetonka Society’s 20th Annual July 4th Flying Pancake Breakfast. Compatriot and retired cabinetmaker Guy Kight presented a scale model of a Revolutionary War 6-pound field cannon for children’s educational use. The oak cannon has an interchangeable barrel so children can try their FALL 2025

NEBRASKA SAR The Nebraska SAR dedicated its fourth Liberty Tree, this on the grounds of the Beatrice Public Library in Beatrice, Neb., on June 21, above. The NSSAR goal is to have 250 such trees dedicated by July 2, 2026.

NEVADA SAR On Aug. 2, the Signers Chapter inducted five new members from one family. NEW HAMPSHIRE SAR On Aug. 26, Compatriot Hans Jackson participated in a joint organizational event marking the grave of New Hampshire Revolutionary War Patriot Phaedris “Frederick” McCutcheon in Bridgewater, N.H. While in Michigan, the Daughters of the Union 1861-1865 marked the grave of Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient Byron M. Cutcheon (Phaedris’ grandson).

PPP NHSAR President Richard “Dick” Baynes designed and created a new sign for the Gen. Henry Knox Burial Site in Thomaston, Maine. The sign was unveiled during the annual Knox Birthday Celebration and WreathLaying Ceremony on July 26, in conjunction with the commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the Noble Train of Artillery.

Dick worked in collaboration with Delores Allen, executive assistant, Knox Museum-Montpelier, to produce a design that honors Knox’s legacy as a key figure in the Continental Army’s artillery corps. Using the museum’s distinctive crossed cannon insignia, they selected an image that reflects Knox’s pivotal role as America’s first Chief of Artillery. From initial concept to finished product, Dick’s craftsmanship, attention to detail and dedication to preserving Revolutionary War history are evident.

On Sept. 1, the NHSAR placed six granite markers to honor Patriots who took part in the historic raid on Fort William and Mary in December 1774. The markers were dedicated during a grave-marking ceremony on Sept. 13.

Compatriots Richard Baynes, Phil Jamieson, Hans Jackson, Thomas Rogers and his wife, Judy, Curtis Hermann, Brush Bradley, Dennis Walsh, Susana Polidura (Portsmouth Historic Cemetery Commission), Andy Akers and his mother, Adelle, and Greg Salts all gathered at the North Cemetery to place the markers.

Many of the headstones of these brave Patriots are in poor condition and hard to read. The markers will ensure the service and sacrifices of our ancestors will be remembered for generations to come.

On Aug. 9, NHSAR Compatriot Doug Wood delivered 38

a presentation in Salem, N.H., focusing on the life, legacy and local lore surrounding Moses Poor, a Revolutionary War soldier who was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Compatriot Wood wove together genealogical research and oral histories for his filmed presentation. The cellar hole of Moses Poor’s home in Salem, N.H.—still preserved by descendants and local historians—stands as a tangible reminder of his sacrifice and a perfect setting to share his legacy. The presentation highlighted Poor’s place in New Hampshire’s early military history and emphasized the importance of remembering lesser-known Patriots whose lives and contributions helped shape the region’s heritage.

The NHSAR joined with the New Hampshire State DAR and New Hampshire State C.A.R. for a summer outing at the N.H. Fisher Cats Minor League Baseball game on Aug. 31. The event promoted the C.A.R.’s 2025-2026 initiative, Swing for Service, which supports New Hampshire’s youth, veterans and disabled athletes. Before the game, members of all three organizations marched around the field, displaying their banners. As part of the pre-game ceremonies, C.A.R. State President Ian Noon presented a challenge coin, and the NHSAR Color Guard proudly presented the colors.

NEW YORK (EMPIRE STATE) SAR The National Bicentennial of General Lafayette’s Farewell Tour made a late August stop in Rochester, marking one of four visits in Monroe and Ontario counties.

Gen. Lafayette was a French military officer and politician who volunteered to join the George Washington-led Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The re-enactment of Gen. Lafayette’s celebrated 1825 return began with his

symbolic arrival at the Corn Hill Marina on the Genesee River, where a brass band greeted him alongside local dignitaries and citizens.

The “Bicentennial of Lafayette’s Farewell Tour” began on Aug. 16, 2024, in New York City and concluded with a Sept. 7 celebration in Washington, D.C. Two centuries ago, Lafayette’s Farewell Tour saw the last surviving major general of the American Revolution return triumphantly to the country he cherished.

SAR compatriots present were Chapter President Brent Downing, Steve Richardson, David Foster, Gary Fague, Gary O’Dea, William Brewer, David Rohr, David Richardson, James Brancato, Tim Schultz and Dahl Schultz.

NORTH CAROLINA SAR On April 12-13, the Bethabara and Catawba Valley SAR chapters hosted the placement of SAR Patriot granite markers in the Pilgrim Reformed Church Cemetery in Lexington, N.C., at the individual graves of 12 Patriots in recognition of their sacrifices and patriotic service.

Each day, Bethabara Chapter Compatriot Fred Learned served as emcee for the pageantry and programs that included: presentation of colors, invocation, Pledge of Allegiance, posting of the colors, celebration hymn, Pledge to the SAR, American’s Creed, welcome and introductions, greetings, Our Patriot’s Legacy, recognition of the Patriots and laying of greens by descendants, presentation and dedication of SAR Patriot Markers, wreath presentations, closing hymn, SAR Recessional, benediction, retirement of colors and closing remarks.

SAR attendees over the two days included compatriots from Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia as well as nine North Carolina chapters. Also in attendance were Thomas Nelson Jr. (VA), Richmond (VA) and Freedom (TX) compatriots.

Louisiana Compatriot Billy LeJeune gave the chapter a nice donation. DAR representatives in attendance included individuals from six DAR chapters.

Sandhills Chapter On July 26, the Sandhills Chapter led the opening ceremony events commemorating the 244th anniversary of the Battle of the House in the Horseshoe, above.

The NCSSAR Color Guard marched to the sound of the fife and presented the American flag and 13 other state and chapter flags. Seventeen wreaths were presented by various chapters of the SAR, DAR, C.A.R., Descendants of Valley Forge (DVF) and Over Victory Mountain Trail Association (OVTA) in honor of our Revolutionary War Patriot Ancestors.

On July 29, 1781, militia Col. Philip Alston and his men had just returned to Alston’s home after a failed mission to capture Loyalist militia Commander Col. David Fanning.

Fanning was notorious for rallying Loyalists together and staging raids on Patriot forces throughout North and South Carolina. In the summer of 1781, with British Gen. Charles Cornwallis having taken his army north into Virginia from North Carolina, Fanning was left leading the Loyalists.

Col. Alston lived in a large, two-story house in a horseshoe bend of the Deep River, hence the name “House in the Horseshoe.” During the evening of July 28, Alston’s men camped at his home, many of them sleeping on the large porch. Alston’s children and wife slept in the house, and sentries watched in case Fanning tried to retaliate.

Fanning, meanwhile, learned that two of his friends had been killed by Alston’s men. On the morning of the 29th, Fanning, with a much larger force, approached the house and took the sleeping sentries hostage. Other sentries, however, noticed the approaching force and raised alarm.

Alston’s militia quickly took up positions inside and outside the house, and a battle began that lasted a few hours. Alston protected his children by making them stand inside the brick chimney on a small table. At one point, Fanning sent a person with a torch to burn the house, but he was shot down. Fanning was close to giving up the battle after suffering several casualties when his men came up with a plan to burn the house down by rolling a cart full of flaming hay into it.

As the cart was being prepared and the hay set alight, Alston realized his group would not survive the attack. He decided to surrender but knew that if he stepped onto the porch he would instantly be shot. Alston’s wife volunteered to go out and negotiate the terms of surrender. She came out bearing a white flag and met Fanning. All the defenders 39

in the House in the Horseshoe were allowed to surrender peacefully and paroled.

Alston was considered a war hero, but later his reputation was tainted with a “murder” investigation which was later judged to be an act of war, and with his alleged role in the murder of a political opponent. Fanning left North Carolina after the war and ended up an exile in Canada, where he built a shipping business.

The Alston House is a historic site managed by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, open to the public with scheduled events and self-guided tours. The house will soon close for an extended period for historic restoration and the building of a new visitor’s center.

OHIO SAR Hocking Valley Chapter On May 31, the Hocking Valley Chapter dedicated a granite monument to the 23 known Patriots resting at the Old Colony Burying Ground in Granville (Licking County), Ohio. This cemetery has the state’s second highest number of Revolutionary War soldiers after Marietta’s Mound Cemetery, with 37 Patriots. The stone was paid for by various businesses and private donors, including a large donation from the Ohio-America 250th Anniversary Commission.

Several Patriot grave-marking ceremonies have taken place, and this concludes all the known Patriots having been honored, including the last at this ceremony, Private Hiram Rose of the Massachusetts Line. His wife, Sebrah, was also remembered, and flowers were placed at their graves by DAR representatives escorted by an SAR musket man.

The ceremony included a drummer and fifer, a singer for the national anthem, a bugler sounding Taps and a musket salute. Thirty-two wreaths were presented by various organizations and chapters, and 61 people participated.

There was one descendant present.

The Patriots buried there were the early founders of Granville, all arriving with their families in 1805 as part of the Licking Land Company, most from Granville, Mass., and Granby, Conn. Granville retains much of its New England ambiance and is home to Denison University.

Northeast Ohio Chapter The chapter, along with members of the Stanley, Redmond Harper DAR chapters, provided a color guard for 25 new U.S. citizens, who were naturalized on June 27 at the James A. Garfield National Historic site in Mentor, Ohio, the seat of Ashtabula County.

OKLAHOMA SAR On Memorial Day, a monument was dedicated to those soldiers killed in action from Washington County, Okla., whose bodies were never recovered. The monument was installed at the White Rose Cemetery in Bartlesville, Okla.

In addition to their name and date of death, listed on the monument was a short description of where or how they died. Compatriot Joe Todd, a military historian, spent three years and untold hours researching military records, obituaries and family records to identify soldiers killed in action whose bodies were never recovered. With Joe’s efforts, 39 soldiers now have a prominent place where they can be recognized for their ultimate sacrifice.

Oklahoma City Chapter On Sept. 27, the OKC Chapter presented colors and a musket salute to the DAR-sponsored celebration of the Oklahoma World War II (WWII) veterans at Veterans Memorial by the Oklahoma State Capitol.

Coordinated by DAR Chapter Regent Karla Killinger, the wreath to the WWII veterans was also presented.

OKC SAR Chapter Color Guard Commander Sean Drake led the color guard and musket team, comprised of Senior Color Sergeant Owen Broyles, Color Guardsmen Joe Sieber, Terry McClain, Canadian Valley Chapter Color Guard Commander Mike Williams, Past Chapter President Ken Young, Chapter President Mark Reichardt and Past Chapter President and Bugler Craig Crow. The presenter highlighted a selection of notable Oklahomans who served in WWII. This was made up of generals, Congressional Medal of Honor recipients and historically significant individuals.

SAR, DAR and C.A.R. members rang the Pergola Bell, one toll for each of the original 13 colonies. Tulsa Chapter SAR Chaplain Clint Anderson and NSSAR South Central District Vice President General-elect Phil Hunt assisted in the event, which attracted local newspaper and TV coverage.

Tulsa Chapter The Tulsa Chapter SAR, eight area chapters of the DAR and the Oklahoma C.A.R. celebrated the national July 4th Let Freedom Ring ceremony on the campus of the University of Tulsa.

David Marshall of the City of Tulsa Pipes and Drums opened the ceremony with patriotic pipe music. Tulsa Chapter SAR Color Guardsmen Ron Shoaf, Phil Hunt, Steve King and Clint Anderson presented the colors. Tulsa Chapter DAR Member Kelley Friedberg sang “The StarSpangled Banner” and “My Country Tis of Thee.”

FALL 2025

The Lewis & Clark Chapter SAR joined forces with the Tualatin Chapter of the DAR again this year, participating in the 2025 City of Lake Oswego Star-Spangled Parade.

The ladies of the Tualatin DAR rolled out in a beautifully maintained 1914 Cadillac touring car. The parade was kicked off by a breathtaking, low-level flyover of a pair of F-15s of the Oregon Air National Guard’s 142nd Wing (Redhawks).

This year’s parade was blessed with mild temperatures that were certainly appreciated by those of us that came out to march “in the wool.” This parade is a chapter favorite that seems to just keep getting more enjoyable with each passing year.

PENNSYLVANIA SAR Erie Chapter Chapter Vice President Ron D. Vollentine had the honor of escorting the Marquis de Lafayette’s carriage to the gala honoring the 200th anniversary of the Frenchman’s return to the United States.

The 244th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Eutaw Springs was held Aug. 29-30.

This year’s events included a free, narrated (by David Reuwer) bus tour of the Fort Motte, Fort Watson and Eutaw Springs battle sites. Friday evening, a dinner/ program was held at Clark’s Inn and Restaurant in Santee.

The Saturday morning Patriotic Program at the Historic Church of the Epiphany in Eutawville was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony and the unveiling of a new Eutaw Springs historic marker.

Many attendees had lunch at Sweatman’s BBQ restaurant near Holly Hill. The events ended with an honorwreath gathering at Gen. Francis Marion’s tomb, Belle Isle Plantation, near Pineville. Ted Walker of the Henry Laurens Chapter brought his cannon to the event. The Washington Light Infantry participated with a five-man color guard at Saturday’s wreath-laying ceremony.

Harris Ferry Chapter The Harris Ferry Chapter has a long history with the Old Hanover Presbyterian Churchyard in Grantville, dating back to restoration efforts in the 1940s and assistance with the wall and bronze markers at the gate in the 1990s.

On July 12, 10 people volunteered to clean 50 stones of veterans buried there, below. This included a few from the French & Indian War, 44 from the Revolutionary War, and a few from the Civil War. At least three Harris Ferry Compatriots have Patriot Ancestors buried at this cemetery.

Future projects include adding a new metal sign outside with a QR code to direct visitors to more information and potentially another plaque regarding enslaved persons and Native Americans buried in the area. We also are researching burials of veterans and Patriots that still need to be marked and cleaned.

Col. Joseph Kershaw Chapter On Aug. 16, the Camden community gathered to honor history and remembrance through two meaningful events: the 245th Anniversary of the Battle of Camden and a wreath-laying ceremony for the Unknown Soldiers at Quaker Cemetery, known as the Camden 12.

The events were jointly sponsored by the Hobkirk Hill Chapter NSDAR, Joseph Kershaw Chapter NSDAR, Historic Camden Foundation and Col. Joseph Kershaw Chapter, SCSSAR, reflecting the shared commitment of these organizations to preserve and honor the legacy of our nation’s past.

Dr. George Mosse and Gov. Paul Hamilton Chapters The annual pilgrimage to the burial site of Thomas Heyward Jr. was held this year on March 1, and the rededication of the gravesite, which was sponsored by the SC Jasper 250 Committee, occurred on May 3.

Gov. Paul Hamilton Chapter President Randy Atkins gave opening remarks for the ceremony, and SCSSAR President Mike Monahan provided the wreath and delivered comments on behalf of the SCSSAR and the chapter. Monahan, Jody Henson and Atkins were part of the procession to march forward and salute Thomas Heyward Jr. Past President Walker provided the artillery.

Gen. James Williams Chapter The Gen. James Williams Chapter joined with the Battle of Musgrove Mill State Historic Site to host the 245th anniversary commemoration of the Patriot victory Aug. 19, 1780.

On Aug. 23, more than 40 people gathered to pay their respects at the event where Joseph Smith of the Gen. James Williams Society was emcee. Greetings and remarks were given by Gary Blanpied, SCSSAR senior vice president, and Ranger Dawn Weaver, park manager.

Historian Mark Stanford, interpretive ranger for the Battle of Musgrove Mill State Historic Site, spoke on the plans to fully renovate the Visitors Center interior,

including incorporation of multiple fully interactive digital displays to bring visitors face to face with the 1780s battle.

After the commemoration, Stanford gave a 45-minute lecture covering events leading up to the battle and the battle itself.

The commemoration concluded with a three-volley musket salute by the SCSSAR Color Guard, followed by refreshments on the Visitors Center’s porch and Ranger Stanford’s presentation.

Gov. Paul Hamilton Chapter For the past 10 years, the Gov. Paul Hamilton Chapter has presented a serving tray engraved with the name of the chapter and the name of the recipient to the graduating senior of the University of South Carolina at Beaufort who has attained the highest grades in American history in the student’s college career. The recipient this year was Sebastian Biggs, and the award was presented at the USCB awards ceremony May 1. Tom Mikell, vice president of the SAR chapter, along with USCB History Department Chair James Shinn, presented the award at a ceremony held at the USCB campus in Beaufort.

TENNESSEE SAR James Madison Chapter Members of the James Madison Chapter joined other local citizens in the annual Reading of the U.S. Constitution Ceremony, below, held at the James Todd Federal Courthouse in Jackson, Tenn., on Sept. 17, Constitution Day. On July 18, the chapter honored the Purple Heart recipients who reside at the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt. Compatriots presented each with a certificate of honor and a Wounded Warrior coin.

The Major Gen. William Moultrie Chapter participated in South Carolina’s Carolina Day—its 249th anniversary celebration of the June 28, 1776, defeat of the British Navy and Army by Continentals and militia under the direct command of then-Col. William Moultrie.

This was the first of three separate attempts by the British, over the course of the Revolutionary War, to capture Charleston. Not until 1780 would they be prevail.

After a parade of Charleston’s Patriotic heritage organizations, 600 people gathered in White Point Gardens, overlooking Charleston Harbor, to hear speeches, watch re-enactment drills and lay memorial wreaths at the Defenders of Fort Moultrie Monument, which depicts 44

TEXAS SAR Accompanied by Texas SAR past state presidents and various chapters’ officers and compatriots, Tom M. Whitelock was honored for his 332 months of perfect attendance at Dallas Chapter meetings. In addition to NSSAR letters of recognition and a DAR award, Master of Ceremony Tom Van Fossen spiced up the event by allowing older comrades to “roast” him with wild stories and questionable photos from Tom’s quarter of a century of SAR service.

Patrick Henry Chapter The Patrick Henry Chapter winner of the 2025 Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest was Austin Westlake High School Senior Harper Quale. Her memorized address was on America’s first female political movement, the Ladies Association of Philadelphia. Harper recently graduated from Austin Westlake High School and plans to be a lawyer and historian.

The chapter was in full form during the Fourth of July in the greater Austin area. Thousands of people were able to see our proud color guardsmen march and present the colors in honor of the 249th anniversary of our beloved country.

A group of guardsmen joined the DAR in marching in the Wimberley Texas Parade, where banners and flags were raised high.

UTAH SAR The Point of the Mountain Chapter on July 3-5 set up an information booth at the annual Colonial Heritage Festival held in Orem, Utah’s Scera Park.

With numerous Colonial-period flags waving at one of the main entrances, compatriots answered questions, distributed brochures and collected contact information for potential follow-up membership inquiries. Scores of visiting individuals engaged with the compatriots staffing the booth for a richly rewarding event.

The Colonial Heritage Festival coincides with Independence Day. Living historians come from throughout the country to create a Colonial village complete with all the trades you might expect: a candle maker, a cooper, a printer, a woodworker and many more. There is also a sizable military presence, including militia, Continental Army and British Army. In 2026, the Colonial Heritage Festival will be the nation’s largest living-history, semi-quincentennial celebration west of the original 13 Colonies.

On the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 9, the chapter had the opportunity to help set up more than 3,000 U.S. flags for The Utah Healing Field® in Sandy City, Utah. This solemn and inspiring event is held annually to honor and remember the victims who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

Started in 2002, this moving tribute was the first Healing Field® in the nation, located at the Sandy City Promenade Park, transforming the park into a field of more than 3,000 American flags, each representing a life lost in the tragic events of that day.

Four compatriots volunteered to represent the SAR. Those who volunteered were truly inspired, as was everyone else in attendance, by the powerful reminder of the human cost of the attacks and the resilience of the American spirit. The event fosters unity and reflection, drawing families, community members and visitors to pay their respects.

Society. The event was free and open to the public, drawing families, educators and history enthusiasts to experience the Revolutionary era through immersive storytelling and community engagement.

VIRGINA SAR The Virginia SAR hosted its 2025 Semi-Annual Meeting on Sept. 19-20 at the Westin Washington Dulles in Herndon, Va., preceded by a series of virtual workshops from Sept. 2–12, which empowered chapter leaders with tools for administration, outreach and mission advancement. Highlights from the in-person gathering included: (1) a Multi-Patriot Grave-Marking Ceremony at Ketoctin Baptist Cemetery in Purcellville, hosted by the Sgt. Maj. John Champe Chapter; (2) a guided tour of the Udvar-Hazy National Air and Space Museum, led

by Compatriot Larry McKinley; (3) a joint Compatriot and ladies’ program featuring a special guest speaker and President Weyler’s Reception; (4) a General Membership Meeting, complete with a Flag Retirement Ceremony and a plated luncheon; and (5) the President General’s WreathLaying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, above, hosted by the George Washington Chapter. The Semi-Annual Meeting reflected the Virginia SAR’s commitment to fellowship, education and honoring the legacy of the American Revolution.

In addition, the Virginia SAR received two new grants to install historical markers honoring Revolutionary War Patriots in Alexandria and Wytheville, Va.

On July 26, the Col. James Wood II Chapter conducted a 250th Anniversary Commemoration of Daniel Morgan’s Beeline March. It was in June of 1775 that Congress approved the formation of the Continental Army. This placed the militia fighting outside Boston under federal control, and a request was sent to Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia for units of riflemen. Pennsylvania was asked to send eight companies, Maryland two and Virginia two.

The Virginians were recruited from the Colonial frontier.

One was raised by Hugh Stephenson in Berkeley County and the other by Daniel Morgan from Frederick County.

This was the foundation of the United States Army.

The “Beeline March” refers to an extraordinary march by Morgan and his riflemen, covering roughly 600 miles from Winchester, Va., to Cambridge, Mass., where they joined Gen. George Washington.

The company was formed in June and, after training, left for Cambridge on July 17 and marched 25 days to arrive at Washington’s camp on Aug. 11.

Morgan was an exceptional frontiersman and leader. A veteran of the French and Indian War, he learned how to fight on the terms used by the American Indians rather than the European style.

The commitment to the mission and the hardiness and strength of the men played an important role in the war’s eventual outcome.

The ceremony began at the Old Stone Church in Winchester with a muster of riflemen at the statue of Daniel Morgan. At the direction of Capt. Morgan (Paul Parish), the company performed a safety check and

assembled for a march to Mount Hebron Cemetery and Morgan’s gravesite. There, they reported to Washington (Ken Bonner), who asked where they came from. Morgan replied, “From the right side of the Potomac, Sir!” Washington and Morgan inspected the troops, which was followed by wreath presentations and a firing of a threeround musket salute to commemorate the occasion.

President General Michael Elston participated and gave remarks honoring the occasion. Other speakers included Virginia SAR President Dr. Michael Weyler, Winchester Mayor Les Veach and George Schember, a resident of the home where Morgan’s daughter lived.

Culpeper Minute Men Chapter The chapter participated in the 64th Annual March to Washington’s Tomb at Mount Vernon on July 4, joining other chapters in honoring the 249th anniversary of American independence. The chapter also supported Independence Day commemorations, including public readings of the Declaration of Independence and patriotic outreach in the Central Piedmont region. Members attended the 135th Annual Congress with Virginia SAR delegates, supporting youth education and chapter excellence efforts.

Dan River Chapter On Sept. 9, the chapter hosted a moving Patriot Burials® Marker Dedication Ceremony at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston, Va. The ceremony honored Revolutionary War Patriots George Estes (1763–1859) and Robert Easley (1754–1814), whose final resting places now bear a permanent historical marker funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and facilitated through Virginia SAR’s Patriot Burials® initiative. The chapter color guard presented the colors with solemn dignity, setting the tone for a ceremony steeped in remembrance and gratitude. Compatriot Mark Estes, a descendant of George Estes, unveiled the marker in a moment both personal and historic. Bruce Meyer, past president of the VASSAR, delivered greetings and read a letter of congratulations from the Pomeroy Foundation, underscoring the program’s collaborative spirit. Fairfax Resolves Chapter On July 19, the chapter hosted the 251st Anniversary of the Signing of the Fairfax Resolves at Historic Pohick Church in Lorton, Va. The event featured: (1) a Patriot Grave-Marking Ceremony for signer Henry Gunnell at Lahey Lost Valley Park; (2) live portrayals of George Washington, George Mason and Rev. Lee Massey, with dramatic readings of the original Resolves; (3) a Virginia SAR Color Guard muster with over a dozen participants; and (4) fellowship and reflection at Mission BBQ following the ceremony. This commemoration honored the July 18, 1774, stand by 25 Fairfax County citizens who rejected British authority and called for Colonial unity, nonimportation of British goods and the end of the slave trade—making the Fairfax Resolves one of the boldest preDeclaration statements of American liberty.

Gen. William Campbell Chapter On Sept. 24, the chapter co-hosted the Col. William Campbell Muster to Kings Mountain at the historic Abingdon Muster Grounds, a Virginia SAR-designated site of Revolutionary significance. This annual event commemorates the 1780 muster of 400 Patriot militiamen under Col. William Campbell, who departed Abingdon to join the Overmountain Men in their march to victory at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The ceremony featured color guard drills, living history demonstrations of backcountry life, and a wreath-laying at the original muster field, known as Craig’s Meadow. Hosted in partnership with the Overmountain Victory Trail Association and Blacks Fort Chapter DAR, the event honored the courage and sacrifice 47

of Virginia’s frontier fighters who marched farther than any other regiment in the campaign. The muster marked the beginning of what many historians call “the turning of the tide” in the Southern theater of the Revolutionary War.

George Washington Chapter On July 4, the chapter hosted more than 100 members of the SAR, DAR and C.A.R. and their guests during the 64th annual March to Washington’s Tomb held at George Washington’s Mount Vernon to commemorate the 249th anniversary of American independence. The Virginia SAR Color Guard led a solemn procession, joined by Maryland SAR, Virginia DAR and Virginia C.A.R. honor guards and French Army (Armée de Terre) Lt.-Col. Nicholas Koudinoff.

On Sept. 17, the chapter participated the 238th Anniversary Commemoration of the U.S. Constitution at Alexandria City Hall Council Chambers, Alexandria, Va. This annual event celebrates the signing of the Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787, and is part of Constitution Week, a national observance honoring the foundational document of American liberty.

The ceremony featured a Constitution Week Proclamation by the mayor of Alexandria, presentations by local DAR chapters and patriotic performances by Alexandria schoolchildren, ranging from elementary to high school.

The event drew civic leaders, educators and lineage society representatives in a shared tribute to the enduring legacy of the Constitution.

Richard Henry Lee Chapter On July 12, the chapter hosted the 249th Commemoration of the Battle of Gwynn’s Island/Cricket Hill at Morningstar Marinas in Hudgins, Va. This annual event honors the July 9, 1776, Patriot victory that forced Lord Dunmore, Virginia’s last royal governor, to flee the Colony. The ceremony featured a musket salute by the VASSAR Color Guard, a wreath-laying at the original artillery battery site, and a keynote address by Dr. Patrick Hannum of the Norfolk Chapter. Participants from multiple SAR chapters, DAR chapters, the Virginia Society Order of Founders and Patriots of America, and U.S. Daughters 1812 joined in commemorating what is considered the first Patriot victory after the Declaration of Independence was adopted.

Sgt. Maj. John Champe Chapter The Sgt. Maj. John Champe Chapter celebrated Independence Day at four parades and two readings of the Declaration of Independence. A float owned by member Warner Workman participated in: the June 27 Star Spangled South Riding parade and display, the July 3 Lovettsville Parade, the July 4 Leesburg Parade and the July 4 Middletown Parade in support of the Col. James Wood II Chapter (CJW-II).

Independence at the Historic Loudoun County Courthouse the morning of July 4, then supported the CJW-II Chapter at a reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 5 in Front Royal at the Warren County Courthouse with a 1/3size Liberty Bell.

At the Loudoun County Courthouse reading, four elected officials were readers, including Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk.

The Rev. John Marks Society C.A.R provided 10 members, who passed out programs and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Ten members of SMJC participated, along with 10 ladies from four DAR chapters.

The Liberty Bell was rung after each section of the Declaration was read, and the bell was rung several times at the completion, with the audience shouting, “Let Freedom Ring.”

The chapter joined with the Reverend John Marks Society (RJMS) C.A.R. to mark the grave of William Ellzey, Loudoun County Patriot and important citizen in preRevolution activity in the county. In the summer of 2024, the team cleaned the tombstones of Ellzey and his wife, Alice (Blackburn), then jointly installed SAR and C.A.R. Patriot markers on Aug. 15 and sponsored the Aug. 23 grave-marking ceremony. Nineteen organizations presented wreaths honoring Patriot Ellzey. The combined Virginia SAR Fire Squad, commanded

Williamsburg Chapter On June 28, the Williamsburg Chapter led a commemoration of the James City County Resolves of July 1, 1774, and the Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary, fought on June 26, 1781. A memorial ceremony was held at Freedom Park to honor the Americans who gave their lives in the skirmishes between forces under Lord Cornwallis and those led by the Marquis de Lafayette.

On July 5, the chapter hosted the annual commemoration of the Battle of Green Spring held at Church on the Main in Williamsburg. The solemn event honored Virginia’s largest Revolutionary War engagement prior to Yorktown. Though a tactical defeat for Patriot forces, the battle proved a strategic setback for the British.

The ceremony highlighted Lafayette’s rising reputation and remembered the six Virginia and 22 Pennsylvania Line Patriots who fell in battle.

Collaboration Increases Capability/Strength in Numbers A foreword by Jeff Lightburn Trustee & Past President With the popularity of “SAR Treasure Chest” presentations growing, driven by an increasing focus on the upcoming 250th Anniversary of our nation, the Fort Vancouver Chapter has found ways to accommodate larger groups of inquisitive students.

We call our presentation “A Day in the Life—1776.” Our menu of topics includes incidents causing the American Revolution, what a Continental soldier carried in his knapsack, the prevalent role teenagers played in the Revolution, early flags, heroines, apprenticeships that young people pursued, the popularity of wigs during Colonial times, the evolving role of women in society and the important daily tasks on a rural farm.

Instead of typically presenting to a single classroom of 20 students, we are now able to accommodate upward of 100 students at a time in a large setting. To do so, we collaborate with our neighboring compatriots from the Lewis and Clark SAR Chapter in Portland, Ore., as well as the Vancouver and Mary Richards Walker DAR chapters.

Our compatriots and DAR sisters bring a wealth of knowledge, creativity and energy to presenting a wide variety of topics. We split up many students into smaller groups that rotate between a series of display tables, encouraging them to interact and ask questions. Hands-on participation is key. Dressed in our Colonial uniforms and period attire, our presenters take young minds on a journey back in time to see why our ancestors risked everything to win our freedom. As a keepsake, we presented each student with a miniature Betsy Ross flag and a “Patriotic Passport,” where they placed stickers representing the topics explored at each table.

To help spread our “story” about this exciting time in our history, we also generate positive news media coverage.

Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution emphasize the importance of the American Revolution, of Team Up to Teach at Woodland Elementary School the founding of the country, and how we came to be.”

By Paul Valencia Clark County Today They dressed in period fashion, and they brought examples of flags, tools and rifles—items used a long time ago for a cause that is still worthy of honoring today.

Local chapters of the SAR and the DAR teamed up last week at Columbia Elementary School in Woodland, giving fourth graders at the school the opportunity to see and listen to what life was like in the 1700s.

“The way history is not being taught means a lot to us these days,” said Paul Winter, president of the Fort Vancouver chapter of the SAR. “We really want to

Members of the SAR and DAR are descendants of Patriots who were part of the war effort, either as soldiers or other volunteers who helped with the cause.

Today’s members attend events in 1700s uniforms or Colonial attire to help in any teaching setting. “Emphasizing to the kids with a hands-on experience,” Winter said, “what it was like and what it should be to be an American.”

Jeff Lightburn of the Fort Vancouver Chapter introduced the students to the project. Set up in the school library were nine tables hosted by SAR and DAR volunteers. Each table hosted several fourth graders at a time for about eight minutes each. The students also received a keepsake “Patriotic Passport” in which they could place stickers representing the various topics discussed.

Every student was expected to visit every table. The subjects taught at each table varied from what life was like for women and children in the 1700s, and what it was like for teenagers. There was a table with flags, crafts, tools, plus a brief lesson on the war itself, including replicas of weapons that were used.

Lightburn called the displays “little snapshots” of the American Revolution and what life was like on a rural farm in the 1700s.

Columbia Elementary has three fourthgrade classes. Heather Boop, one of the fourthgrade teachers at Columbia, said having experts in history to teach students is better than just a teacher talking about history in a classroom.

“It’s more engaging, not just reading about it in a book,” Boop said.

“It’s super fun.”

Boop appreciates the SAR and DAR members wearing their period fashion, as well.
