Welcome to the 2014 Fair! Message from the mayor of Healdsburg
I
by driving a flatbed tow truck with a jazz band set up on the back playing a continuous loop of “When the Saints Come Marching In”. Be sure to make plans to see the parade with all of its floats representing local nonprofit organizations, businesses, schools and public safety vehicles. Always stay ‘til the end to see my favorite participants bring up the rear – the fabulous fancy horses. After that, head over to Rec
t’s almost time for the 66th annual Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair and I am excited about it. This years’ theme of “Barn in the USA” will kick off with the Twilight Parade on Thursday May 21, continuing until Saturday with livestock auctions, animal shows including daily circus acts and of course, the midway! I will always remember the first time I participated in the parade
Park to support all of the young farmers who have worked hard all year raising their animals. On behalf of the City Council I would like to thank the Healdsburg Future Farmers organization and participants for an event that keeps our rural roots and small town character alive and well while providing fun for the whole family. Message from HFFCF Board President
W
ow, May is already here. What a great year we have had so far preparing for the 2015 Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair. I am honored to be a part of this great board of directors. It is amazing to think that over 15 years ago I was a 4-H Junior showing breeding rabbits. Where does the time go? I am fortunate to have been able to be involved in the Healdsburg Fair in many capacities from Exhibitor, to Jr. Executive Board, and now a board member and President. We have a truly amazing team
who has dedicated hundreds of thousands of hours to put this fair together year after year. This nonprofit organization has helped shaped the person I am today, and I am forever grateful for the community of Healdsburg for continuing to support this amazing fair. I am proud to be a part of the HFFCF, though this year will be difficult for us having our first fair missing two very important members of our community. Our fair is dedicated to dawn Peavler was not only a fellow board member to me, she was also Mom to one of my HHS classmates, Jennah
Peavler, and we will be cheering on her son Wyatt Peavler this year as he shows for his first time at HFFCF. All of us will miss dawn’s smile and support during the fair. I have never been to an HFFCF auction without Bruce Campbell sitting up at the podium, and this year’s auction is dedicated to Bruce as we remember and appreciate all of the hours he dedicated himself to giving back to the local 4-H and FFA all around Sonoma County. — Ali Redden, President Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair Board of Directors

Junior Fair Board — The next generation of community leaders
T
he Junior Executive Board is composed of volunteers selected by their peers to represent their clubs at Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair Board meetings. These volunteers meet prior to the regular board meetings, to talk about their responsibilities and prepare for the upcoming fair. They organize the garden barrel competition, the kids day activities, tours for elementary school children, the petting zoo, adult showmanship, Friday night entertainment, the clean-up after the fair, and every year they put on some type of fundraiser. They have volunteered for a very big responsibility, they always rise to the occasion with great enthusiasm. Aside from their involvement to organize these events, they are also working diligently with their own exhibits. Each Junior Executive Board member wrote a description about themselves for the fair program, and they all wish you an enjoyable fair. Jasmine Alger – I am a senior at Healdsburg High School. This is my second year on the Junior Executive Fair Board. during my 4 years of FFA I have sold market rabbits, hogs and this will be my first year selling a market steer. Along with selling animals at HFFCF, last year was my first year selling market hogs at the Sonoma County Fair. I am also an active member in FFA, I am my chapter’s vice President. Besides being an active member in FFA, my other school activities are drama and being a four-year varsity swimmer. Cash Barron – I am a senior at Healdsburg High School. This is my first year on the Jr. Fair board, but second year in Healdsburg FFA. For my supervised agriculture experience I raise market swine. This year I have a Hampshire barrow named Mac and a dark Cross gilt named Socks. Through FFA, raising livestock, and Jr. Fair board I have learned responsibility and time management. In my spare time I enjoy riding my dirtbike, working on my truck, and hanging out with my friends. I cannot wait to see you at the 2015 Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair. Michael Beard – I am a senior at Healdsburg High School. This is my ninth year in the Warm Springs 4-H club, of which I am the co-president this year. Through my 4-H club, I have been able to raise market pigs, compete in vine pruning and judging competitions, as well as public speaking competitions. I have been active in the Junior Fair Board for the past two years now, and have participated in the fair for nine years through my market pigs and various community service organizations. My main responsibilities with the Junior Fair Board include organizing the 4-H garden barrels, helping out with Kids day and helping to keep the fair running smoothly. Outside of 4-H, I am very active with the Healdsburg High School Mountain Bike team and am currently our team’s captain. Through this team, I have been able to race all across the state and have enjoyed every minute of it. After I graduate this year, I will be attending Cal Poly San luis Obispo as a general Engineering major and will continue to pursue cycling at the collegiate level. Jeanette Bedolla – I am a member of Healdsburg FFA and Westside 4H. This is my second year being in the Junior executive fair board. getting ready for the fair I was in charge of the garden barrel and pallets committee. I am showing a goat with FFA for my first time and this is my fourth year showing pigs with Healdsburg 4H. After high school I would like to attend a four year university or college and become a cardiologist and hope to have a minor in agriculture. Jared Beth – I am a senior at Healdsburg High School. This is my third year on the Junior Executive Fair Board. during my eight years of 4-H I have raised seven steers. The money that I have raised, I have saved except for expenses for the next steer. With that money, I will attend Fresno State in the fall. Besides 4-H, I play baseball and football through the high school. next year
will not be the same without a steer to raise! Ben Kordik – I am 17 years old and a senior at Windsor High school. I show market swine at Healdsburg Fair and I have been in 4-H for 8 years. I am in gateway 4-H and I am currently the club President. This is my second year on the Jr. Fair board and it’s a lot of fun. I really enjoy being able to help out and be a part of the fair. I enjoy the Healdsburg fair because I get to see all of my friends, make new ones and have fun, I also get to show my pigs that I have spent months raising. This year I have two pigs, one duroc named lucy and one light Cross named Ethel. I also participate in vine pruning, which I have been doing for 7 years. Outside of 4-H I spend my time as a Windsor Police Explorer, riding my dirt bike, or hanging out with my family and friends. Sierra Mossberg – This is my first year being a part of the Junior Fair board and I am so excited for the opportunity to participate in organizing our fair. I have been a member of Warm Springs 4-H for six years. For all of those six years I have been raising hogs for the HFFCF Besides my involvement in HFFCF I enjoy riding my horse, Sofi, and hiking. Andrew Nunez – I am a sophomore at Healdsburg High School. I have been involved in 4-H for eight years and this is my second year in FFA. I’m currently one of the Healdsburg FFA Junior Fair board Representatives and this is my second year on the Junior Fair Board. This year I am showing a steer, my beef heifers (nibblet and her calf as well as Minnie), and a market hog. I have taken swine to the Healdsburg Fair for the past seven years and look forward to showing my pig at the fair this year. This is going to be my third year showing a steer at the Healdsburg Fair, but throughout the year my steer, heifers, and I attend multiple jackpot shows. This is my second year raising and showing breeding heifers and I have learned a lot through my Beef Breeding Project. Emily Nunez – I am a junior at Healdsburg High School. I have been involved in 4-H for eight years and in FFA for three years. I am only in FFA this year. I’m
currently the Healdsburg FFA Sweetheart and this is my third year on the Junior Fair Board. This year I am showing a steer (Bruiser), beef heifers (PlAT Showgirl 320) and her baby as well as (PlAT Mia 420), a market pig, and multiple breeding rabbits. I have shown swine at the Healdsburg Fair for the past seven years. This is going to be my fourth year showing a steer at the Healdsburg Fair. This is my second year having breeding heifers and this year I will also be showing my heifer’s calf. Throughout the year I also jackpot my steers and heifers all across the state. I also have a rabbit breeding project in which I breed and sell Californian rabbits to 4-H and FFA members to show and auction at the Fair. I have been showing rabbits for nine years, but began my rabbit breeding project five years ago (nunez Rabbitry). Ashley Remillard – I am 14 and attend Healdsburg High. I have been raising pigs since I was 9. I am also the president of Healdsburg 4-H. Some things I enjoy doing are raising pigs with my grandfather, Harold Hoskins, and my cousin. I also play two sports, basketball and varsity softball. Taylor Richardson – I am a 16 year old sophomore at Healdsburg High. I have shown sheep since I was nine years old through 4-H and just recently began to show sheep through FFA my freshman year of high school. I currently serve as Healdsburg FFA’s chapter reporter and plan on serving as a Sonoma Section officer next year. This is my first year on Junior Fair board and I am very excited to be more involved in HFFCF. My grandpa served on the fair board for many years and I am proud to be following in his footsteps. Aside from this, I play softball and enjoy hunting, fishing and being with friends. Once I graduate high school, I plan on going to a four year college and major in viticulture. Mackenzie Rodgers – I am a junior at Healdsburg high school. I’ve been in gateway 4-H for four years. This year I am the second vice President and also on the Junior fair board. I play varsity softball. I’ve showed market rabbits for 4-H one year and for FFA my freshmen year.

The Petting Zoo is Back! – For this year’s fair we are proud to welcome back dotty Bergmen from The Friendly Farm in Ukiah. The petting zoo will be open Friday and Saturday and will display a variety of animals such as exotic turkeys, small pigs, unique chickens, and fluffy rabbits. Her animals are one of a kind, performing tricks that you have never seen before. The petting zoo is free of charge and we invite you and your family to visit these friendly animals. – Emily Nunez

T
here are currently 23 members on the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair Board. Many have served on the Board for multiple years with several serving more than a decade. We follow in the footsteps of others who have dedicated countless hours to making the fair a successful event for more than half a century. We come from various walks in life but share in our common goal of giving our youth the opportunity to be involved in 4-H and FFA through this community based, non-profit fair.
The members include: Wayne Steindorf holds the record for membership with 46 years on the board. He is the unofficial historian, chairs the Rules & By-laws Committee, Co-Chairs the Booths Committee, and serves on many other committees. Mary Rodgers has worked her magic on the HFFCF Board for 36 years, serving tirelessly on numerous committees. Her passion is coordinating the Small Animal Program for the HFFCF and overseas the Entertainment Committee scheduling the Swan Brothers Circus. Jack Brandt joined the Board in 1980 and has served on various committees over the years. This past year he has chaired the Recreational Park liaison, Sanitation & Security and Insurance Committees while participating in various committees. Susie Garcia has been on the Board for 29 years serving in various capacities. This past year, she has continued as the Co-Treasurer and serving on the Executive Council. In addition to Co-chairing the Parade and serving on various other committees. Marci Jacobs is in her 20th year on the Board. She heads up the livestock & Auction Committee and Scholarship Committee and serving on various committees including Rules & By-laws. Tom Rued is in his 18th year on the Board. This past year Tom has provided leadership to the Buildings & grounds, Fair Board BBQ, Pen Assignments, and while serving on several other committees. Mike Weatherby is in his 13th year of his second term on the Board. He served as the Co-Chair for this year's Horse Show while working on various committees. He is the number one volunteer in the kitchen during the Barn dance. John Dericco completed his 12th year on the Board. He coordinates the Buyers dinner and sits on various committees including livestock & Auction, Building & grounds, Parade, and the Barn dance. Phil Manoukian finishes his 12th
year on the Board. Phil provides leadership and experience with Booths, the Barn dance, and long-Range Planning while serving on various committees. Wendy Dayton is in her 11th year. Wendy maintains the fair website (www.HealdsburgFair.org), creates the HFFCF Fair Program, overseas the grant Committee, co-chair of the Parade Committee, updates our Facebook page and serves on the various committees. Wendy is our Corresponding Secretary again this year. Martin Kiff completes his 11th year on the Board. Martin is involved with the Barn dance, Buildings & grounds, and the Buyers dinner. Martin co-chair for the Cake and Barrel Auction Committee. Jake Gutierrez finishes his 7th year on the Board. Jake is the co-chair of the Buyer's dinner and Buildings & grounds. Kelly Zimmerman is in her 7th year on the Board she is on the Executive Council. In addition, Kelly is the Chair for Sir Rusty tickets and Chair for Public Relations while serving on several other committees. Mike Brookfield is in his 7th year on the Board after many years of volunteering at the fair without the title. Mike serves on the Executive Council
as our vice President. This past year he has coordinated our Horse Show, and Chairs the Cake & Barrel Auction, while serving on many committees. Kevin Newman is in his 6th year on the Board. Kevin serves on various committees including Buildings & grounds, Parade, and the Buyer's dinner. Kevin also, serves on the Executive Council. Angel Nunez finishes up his 6th year on the Board. Angel serves as the Treasurer and a member of Executive Council. In addition, he serves as the co-chair for the Scholarship Committee and Chairs the Academic Committee while participating in several committees. Ali Redden is in her 5th year on the Board. Ali served as the boards President this year. While serving on several committees, Ali Chairs Round Robin, and Co-chairs, the Barn dance and livestock and Auction. Christy Delucchi is in her 3rd year on the Board. Christy jumped into leadership coordinating the livestock Judges and assisting as cochair of Small Animals and Jr. Executive Board while serving on the Parade and Barn dance Committees. Tessa Fraguglia finishes up her 3rd year, as well a recent HFFCF alumni, Tessa gave leadership to the
Awards & Trophies Committee and Co-chairs the Barn dance while serving on the Academic and Parade Committees. Tessa is our recording secretary this year. Jane Houser completed her 3rd year on the Board. Jane served on several committees including the Barn dance, Small Animals, Parade, and Exhibits. We were fortunate to have her experience after years as a 4-H leader and mom. Nick Dunkel completed his 2nd year on the Board. nick heads up the viticulture Committee and serves on several committees including Buildings and grounds, Parade, Barn dance and the Buyers dinner. nick is always willing to help where ever needed. Wesley Hunt joined the board this year. Wesley not only serves on the board, but has been the Ag instructor for the past two year at the high school. She does an outstanding job. Wesley is always ready to lend a hand where needed. Margaret Basurto completed her first year as a board member; Margaret is also an alumni of the HFFCF. Margaret serves on the livestock and Auction Committee as well as the Barn dance Committee and several others. It’s great to have her as part of the team.

FFA leaders show dedication to agriculture
F
FA President Tony Klisura and FFA Sweetheart Emily nuñez are bringing years of experience and excellence in agriculture to the Future Farmers Country Fair. Klisura is a senior at Healdsburg High School, and has been involved with FFA since his freshman year. While in FFA, Klisura has been a chapter officer, sectional officer, competed across the state in different competitions and worked on numerous market projects. last year, he was in the Farm to Table Program, which makes use of ingredients grown right on campus to prepare fresh food. “FFA has helped me grow as a person over the last four years and I’ve been able to gain opportunities because of it. It’s helped me become a better person overall and I’m more comfortable with myself, whether it’s public speaking or meeting new people,” Klisura said. Klisura plans to attend Santa Rosa Junior College after high school, and hopefully transfer to Fresno State University, where he wants to study animal science with a specialty in livestock business management.

Sweetheart nuñez has been with FFA for three years, but her interest in agriculture began when she joined 4H at the age of seven. nuñez has taken courses in ag animal and ag plant, and she is currently in an ag anatomy and physiology class with Klisura. She is also an ag biology student tutor. “FFA has definitely helped me throughout high school, whether that be keeping my grades up or just wanting to be successful, and it has helped shape what I see myself doing in the future,” nuñez said. After high school, nuñez is looking at going to Modesto Junior College and participating in their internship program at the campus farm. She also hopes to join the livestock judging team. nuñez plans to then transfer to a four-year, out of state college and study ag business or animal science. See the President and Sweetheart of Healdsburg FFA on their respective floats at this year’s Twilight Parade – and then, go to the fair. Fair, auction dedicated to fair friends
T
he 66th annual Future Farmers Country Fair is dedicated this year to dawn Peavler. dawn served on the fair board for 11 years, but her participation and support goes back decades. She served as the advisor for the Junior Executive Board, and was an anchor on many committees, including the Barn dance Committee, Cake & Barrel Auction Committee, and livestock & Auction. dawn was a lifelong resident of Healdsburg and showed beef and swine when she was young, with 4-H and FFA. She was a 4-H leader for 15 years, and passed away in February.

he Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair livestock Auction is dedicated this year to Bruce Campbell, who was instrumental in many successful auctions. Bruce was born and raised in Healdsburg. He and his sisters, linda and Susie, were known as the “Campbell Kids,� not only for their name, but their ruddy cheeks and big smiles that reminded people of a famous soup advertising campaign. Bruce worked with auctioneer louis Ricci for many years, and eventually took over auction duties. His meat company, CK lamb, has been a household name for many years. He passed away in december.

ixty-six years of youth and agriculture kick off May 21 at 6 p.m. with our Twilight Parade through downtown Healdsburg. It’s a night when we’re all “Barn In The USA!”! It provides entertainment for all ages. The parade takes Healdsburg back in time where everyone joins together and celebrates community. The long-lived tradition is a household staple of fun. It is an example of true community support and what can be accomplished by a group of dedicated volunteers, working together for the preservation of agriculture and educating our adults of tomorrow. Remember, if you’re not in the parade, you ought to be watching it. When the parade ends, join your friends and neighbors at the fairgrounds, Recreation Park, for eats, games and creating new memories while supporting all our local non-profit groups.

Rued family grand marshals for Twilight Parade
T
he Rued family, of Rued vineyards and Winery, has been chosen as the grand Marshals for this year’s Twilight Parade. As grand Marshals, the family will lead the Thursday evening parade, which kicks off the three-day Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair. Similar to previous grand Marshal honorees, the Rueds have longstanding ties to the Healdsburg community, which began when they moved here in 1905. The family is known for their work with wine and grapes, and patriarch Richard Rued has been growing grapes on their dry Creek Road piece of property since 1958. The family started growing grapes in 1882 in Russian River valley, said Richard’s wife, dee. greatgreat-grandfather Rued then relocated from the Russian River valley to Alexander valley. Richard and dee’s sons, Tom and Steve, work in the family business, along with daughter-in-law, Sonia.
Through their time in Healdsburg, the Rueds have nurtured strong connections with the Healdsburg community, and have supported the Future Farmers Country Fair for decades. “My dad started showing animals in the fair in 1955. My brother and I both showed animals in the late 70s and early 80s. during that time, my dad was on the board of directors for the Healdsburg fair, and I’ve been on the board of directors since 1997,” Tom said. granddaughter Allyssa has also shown animals at the fair. “We want to support local agriculture and kids coming up in it,” Tom said. – Kat Gore
Tom works primarily with the family vineyard, and Steve and Sonia focus on the winery. That’s six generations
of Rueds farming land in Sonoma County. “My grandfather was raised in Healdsburg, my dad
was raised in Healdsburg, me and my brother were raised in Healdsburg, and his kids were raised here,” Tom said.

Sir Rusty a fair tradition for almost half a century
T
his is the 49th year that Sir Rusty has been a part of the fair. Sir Rusty is one of the main fundraisers for the fair. The proceeds from the sales of Sir Rusty tickets help the fair board pay for entertainment, awards and activities that are important in keeping the fair going. Each young exhibitor, FFA and 4-H, who brings a market animal to the fair, is required to sell at least 20 Sir Rusty tickets per animal that they have entered in the auction. The fair board members are required to sell 50 tickets each. The fair board sponsors an award of a belt bucket to the 4-H or FFA member who sells the most tickets overall. This year tickets are selling like crazy. Tom Mauritson sponsors the drawing each year, reimbursing the fair board for its expenses for the prizes, whether cash or meat. The fair board printed 10,000 Sir Rusty tickets this year. A $1 donation entitles you to a chance to win one of two grand prizes of $500 Painted Hills Beef (or $500 cash), or one lamb (or $100
cash). The animals are freezer ready. The Sir Rusty drawing winner is announced during Saturday night’s livestock auction, May 23. (need not be present to win). The $1 tickets have four great discounted coupons this year – Round Table Pizza, Wild Flowers Saloon, Costeaux French Bakery and Summer’s Market and deli. Round Table Pizza is offering $3, $2 and $1 off select pizzas. Wild Flowers Saloon is offering $2 off any meal, Costeaux French Bakery is offering complimentary cup of house of coffee with a purchase of a breakfast pastry or muffin. Summer’s Market and deli is offering buy any two sandwiches and receive one small scoop of house made ice cream free. Sir Rusty tickets are available from your local 4-H and FFA members, any fair board or Jr. Executive fair board member. Or contact Kelly Zimmerman, at 695-7824. Judges bring expertise and support to the fair
O
ur livestock judges are dedicated professionals who do much more than evaluate the animals our youth bring to the fair. They work with our young people to help them bring out the best in their animals and themselves. We are so grateful to our judges for all they do to make this a great experience for our kids. Rabbit Judge: Manuel Hidalgo a retired Sonoma State University professor, started raising rabbits in 1972 and began showing them in 1975. He later obtained his ARBA judging license in 1990. He and his wife linda have exhibited their new Zealand rabbits at the big national shows and have won many awards. They have shipped their prize winning breeding stock to most states and to many foreign countries. Poultry Judge: Eric Kutch has been breeding and exhibiting poultry for 50-plus years. He is a master breeder, exhibitor and judge in both the American Poultry Association and the American Bantam Association. He has judged shows and fairs
throughout the United States and Canada. living in Jamestown, California with his wife, he also breeds AKC Cocker Spaniels and nubian dairy goats. Sheep Judge: We are happy to welcome Todd Maddux as our lamb/goat judge this year. Todd grew up on a sheep ranch raising many different breeds through the years, with one breed remaining constant, Southdowns. The Maddux Ranch has raised Southdown sheep since 1929. He is the owner of Outlaw Club lambs with blackface crosses with sales of both breeding and project animals. He has judged breeding and market sheep at county, state and regional shows throughout the western states. In 2004 Todd started raising Boer goats. He has attended type judging conferences in Texas and California, earning his certification and has judged Boer goat shows throughout the western states, including the north Western American livestock Exposition in louisville, Kentucky. He is an instructor of Agriculture at
dos Palos High School. He completed his education at University of California, Fresno, earning a BS degree and credential in Agricultural Education. Beef Judge: We are happy to have Shane geist as our beef judge again this year. Shane graduated from Kansas State University with a BS in Animal Science and a Masters from Cal Poly. He was a member of the Reserve national Champion Judging team in 2000 at Kansas State. He
works for Boehringer Ingelheim pharmaceuticals as a Territory Manager. Shane is married and he and his family own and operate geist Cattle Co., which is a club calf and purebred operation, where they have raised champions from local to national levels. He and his wife have two young daughters who are just starting their show careers. Dog Judge: lisa Steele has been involved with showing and judging horses, dogs and livestock since my involvement with FFA 40 years ago. She is currently showing dogs in the area of confirmation, field trials, rally and obedience. She has enjoyed wins at the state and national level in all of the events. Horse Judge: Amy Woodruff ’s love of horses has been lifelong. Her formal training in the sport of 3-day event began in the early 80s and took her and various mounts through the Area 6 young riders program and on through 3 Star Advanced. She has owned training and boarding stables both in Colorado and California. She
currently course designs and jump judges at Santa Rosa Equestrian Center for the last 7 years. Her 9-year-old son shares her love of horses and they are both fortunate to have their three horses and two of her father’s under their care. While her competition time has been put on hold due to work and her young son, Amy very much enjoys judging as a way to continue to share in and give back to the horse community. Parade Judges – We are happy to have a great team to judge the Twilight Parade this year. Renee Row is the owner and head instructor of Jeff Speakman’s Kenpo 5.0 north Bay – Martial Arts in Santa Rosa. She will be judging her first parade this year and looks forward to participating and supporting the Healdsburg community. Our second judge, Sunni Ashley, is president of vineyard Industry Products Co. and will also be judging her first parade this year. She has been a longtime supporter of the fair and is looking forward to this new and fun opportunity.

Barn Dance another successful fundraiser
T
he Barn dance celebrated its 23rd year this year, and what better way then to enjoy a breezy spring evening then stepping out in your best country duds and enjoying the local sights and sounds at the amazing Trione vineyard and Winery? The night brought together old and new friends under the historic building to dine on amazing new york steaks and fixins, purchased from none other than Healdsburg’s own Big John’s Market. We had amazing cupcakes decorat-
ed from the 4-H cake decorating group, and keeping with our local theme we had amazing wine options from not only Healdsburg and geyserville, but even some from napa to round out the options. The fair and the community suffered a tremendous loss this year, the passing of longtime fair booster dawn Peavler. To commemorate the loss the room was decorated in pink to honor and remember the amazing board member, friend, mother, wife and dedicate 4-H leader who was absent from our
annual and only fundraising event. The silent and live auction show cased local handmade goodies as well as those cute country items you can’t live with out, wine, gift certificates and amazing art. We would like to thank all of the generous donors, the countless hours volunteered from the community and outpouring of support to the local small town fair. As we reflect on the amazing festivities of the night we are already planning and looking forward to the 24th celebration!
Scholarships make a difference
O
ne of our greatest rewards as board members is our ability to reward the hard working 4-H and FFA members by awarding scholarship monies. Each year the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair board awards scholarships to graduating seniors who are either attending a trade school, a junior college or going on to a four-year university. Scholarships are also awarded to second year return-
ing recipients. It is really rewarding for us as a board to give these monies out and help offset some of their college costs. A scholarship can make the difference between some kids being able to continue their education or not. In many cases we track the students through college and see them annually at the fair. Bringing it full circle, some of our past scholarship recipients are now fair board members themselves.

Adult Showmanship Fundraiser Adults, here is your chance to show the livestock kids a thing or two about showmanship. dust off your boots, brush up on your show skills and knowledge, and come to the fair on Friday, May 22. Adult Showmanship is open to parents, past showmen, and anyone who would like to participate. This year Adult Showmanship is a fundraiser. you can donate $10 to buy someone into showmanship, where they must participate unless they want to buy themselves out for $20. (you can also buy yourself in for $10) If multiple people buy one person into Adult Showmanship, they must pay twice as much to get out. There will be four rounds, so participants will show swine, lambs, goats, and beef. It will be held after the completion of the whole large Animal livestock Show. This is a fun activity and unique fundraiser, with awesome prizes including gift certificates, wine and more.Come out and support our Adult Showmanship fundraiser – you can even buy someone in if you want to. he cake and barrel auction takes place Friday evening May 22, at 6:30 pm. The garden barrels are designed and planted by our local FFA and 4-H groups and the HFFCF Junior Executive Board. All proceeds go directly back to the respective clubs. The cake auction allows the creative baker of the community to donate their favorite dessert. Proceeds go to the scholarship fund and general fair expenses. The cake and barrel auction is always a lot of fun. Come join the fun while supporting youth and agriculture. Each club creates a garden barrel based on the theme of the fair. On Thursday afternoon the barrels are judged and then auctioned off that Friday night. Half the money earned from the barrels will be given to each chapter. Stop on by and support your local 4-H and FFA chapters.

Buyer’s dinner a pre-auction tradition

Healdsburg Future he Farmers’ Country Fair will be here before you know it! The last night of the fair, Saturday, May 23, 2015, between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. the fair board will host the annual buyers’ dinner. The dinner is held to express our appreciation to the businesses and individuals who have shown support to the local FFA and 4-H groups by attending and investing in the future of the exhibitor. John and Kim lloyd of Big John’s Market have graciously offered to donate the supplies needed to put on such an affair again this year, and K. King Catering – Kathy King and her crew – have offered their time and service in preparing the dinner. This event could not be held without the support of such people and businesses as those mentioned above; who have done so for a number of years with no hesitation when asked. Come and join the fun and enjoy a great meal! For more information regarding the auction and this year’s dinner, fair board members will be on hand at Recreation Park starting Wednesday, May 20.
