Originally built in 1927, the residential-style landmark hotel was called the Beverly hotel. The Beverly Hotel was constructed as a premiere hotel along “Hotel Alley”, following the construction of Grand Central Terminal. The ornamental details helped make the building an architectural icon.
5
The beauty of the Beverly Hotel was also the inspiration of Georgia O’Keeffe 1929 “New York Night” featuring the hotel and the iconic rosette at the top of the building.
6
In 1997, the hotel was renamed “The Benjamin.” The exterior was restored to its original grandeur and received landmark status in 2017. Today the hotel continues to be “one of New York’s most romantically styled towers, a rich ornament in the cityscape.”

The story of New York City begins with an individual journey and evolves to a collective experience…

A place of prominence, The Benjamin Royal Sonesta is preserving its legacy, and redefining its future with the upcoming renovation in 2024. Taking cues from the building’s history, the design draws inspiration from the namesakes Beverly and Benjamin. The masculine designs are a reflection of “Ben,” featuring bold lines, and modern details, with feminine touches to showcase “Bev” through the intricate patterns, and a soft palette.

Beverly
Beverly is timeless in her grace, yet fashion forward. She is a local and always welcomes guests into her circle.
We honor her spirit – iconic in a black dress and a red leather coat – as the host of our guests’ new experiences.

Benjamin
The spirit of New York City is about promise, determination, and entrepreneurship. Benjamin is our modern creative whose drive is constant and strong. He desires to gain all that the city has to offer through his quest for success.

Each Royal Sonesta honors a resident mascot; The Benjamin Royal Sonesta features the royal owl – Oscar, The King of New York – who is an artistic muse reflected in the architecture.
The custom painted masterpiece celebrates the hotels historic roots and local DNA and will offer a surprising welcome to every guest when they enter the lobby in the city that never sleeps...
