The ecological footprint of electric traction is considerably lower than that of Diesel traction, and this applies for electrically powered buses and trucks as well. The dimensioning and design of an overhead contact line system and the selection of the right materials are determined by application and speed, environmental influences, frequency of passing trains and their energy demand. By choosing the right alloy and product, the efficiency of an overhead contact line system can be significantly increased regarding its electrical and mechanical performance. PRODUCTS AND SERVICES FOR OVERHEAD CONTACT LINE SYSTEMS ELCOWIRE OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF PRODUCT RELATED SERVICES, SUCH AS TECHNICAL CONSULTING, TRAINING MATERIAL, PRODUCT INVESTIGATIONS, CALCULATIONS, ON-SITE MEASUREMENTS, RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MATERIAL, DRUM SELECTION AND INSTALLATION. Today’s modern rail applications put special requirements on the components and materials used in overhead contact lines*.

In particular, contact and messenger wires used in these applications require increased tensioning forces, highest possible electrical conductivity and the maximum possible fatigue strength. Elcowire has developed a comprehensive portfolio of products designed to meet these challenging demands.

For railways with high speed up to 400 km/h, we offer the VALCOND CuMg0,2 and CuMg0,5 contact wires. These have been specially developed to ensure maximum tensile strength with minimal wear, while providing high electrical conductivity.

VALCOND means VALue by increased CONDuctivity far beyond the standards.

These and other contact wires can be combined with highstrength messenger and auxiliary wires, as well as very flexible dropper wires, all made from Elcowire’s VALCOND copper alloys.

Copper and copper alloys with the maximum electrical conductivity of pure copper are used as the material of choice for feeder, return and earthing conductors and for power connectors as well. Elcowire's products made of copper and lowalloyed copper alloys, offer conductivity and strength optimized according to the specifications of the overhead contact line system. We adapt the design to the requirements of the application, working together with each customer to make sure they get the optimal solution for their needs.

For high-speed rail at speeds of 300 km/h and below, our VALCOND CuSn0,2 contact wires provide excellent tensile strength and conductivity. These wires are also used for local transit applications.

Elcowire’s copper alloy VALTHERMO CuSn0,1 is an economically and ecologically smart replacement for contact wires and stranded conductors made from copper and copper-silver alloys. This sustainable solution is available in all common profile shapes, providing universal use for virtually any new construction and for maintenance purpose. It is typically suitable for applications of speeds up to 250 km/h.

VALTHERMO products provide the maximum possible electrical conductivity and high tensile strength, with wear rates far below those of conventional copper or coppersilver solutions. At the same time, the processing properties during installation are equivalent to those of high-strength contact wires made of these conventional materials.

VALTHERMO offers electrical and mechanical compatibility with copper and copper-silver products as well. The contact wires are fully compliant with the EN 50149 standard.

As with CuAg0,1 contact wires, VALTHERMO requires no readjustment work in the first year after installation, since the creep strain is 2 to 3 times less than that of pure copper, but with the same full electrical conductivity. VALTHERMO offers VALue by increased THERMO-resistance to softening (recrystallization), enabling higher current carrying capacity. As a result of these characteristics, a combination of VALTHERMO contact and messenger wires gives you an ideal total solution with long life time, highest electrical conductivity and excellent thermal resistance.

VALCOND and VALTHERMO are also suitable as contact wires for the electrification of road vehicles such as trolley buses or trucks.

Elcowire contact wires are not only used in Railway catenary systems and single contact lines. They can also be found in rigid overhead conductor rail systems, e-highway, e-mobility systems like trolley buses and mines.

Especially for contact wires we strongly recommend to use low alloyed copper alloys like VALTHERMO and VALCOND instead of pure copper (Cu-ETP) in order to realize the most sustainable solution in new installations and for maintenance with reduced life cycle cost.

VALTHERMO contact wires have two identification grooves, one offset at an angle of 24° and one in the middle of the curve at the top of the wire (by agreement).
