T

here are dreams we carry quietly for years, iideas we hold close, even as we begin to share them, waiting for what feels like the right moment. SOMOS is one of those dreams coming to life.

At its core, SOMOS is about connection, connecting people with ideas to those who have the tools to bring them to life, connecting businesses with the people who need them, and connecting our community through resources, opportunities, and shared voices.

SOMOS is a space for expression. A platform created to give visibility to the stories, voices, and ideas that shape our multicultural community in Gainesville. A space that inspires and reminds us of what’s possible.

This vision lived with me for a long time, the desire to create something meaningful, a platform that could bring people closer and open doors.

Along the way, while working within our community, I met someone who shared a passion for communication and for serving others, someone who saw this vision too: my business partner, Silvana Fajardo. I’m very excited to share this journey with her. In that moment, SOMOS stopped being just a personal dream and became something bigger, something shared.

Starting something new is never free of doubt. There is always a moment where you wonder if you’re ready, if the timing is right, if the path ahead is clear. But there is also something powerful that happens when you begin.

Passion takes over. Purpose becomes clearer. And sometimes, life surprises you in ways you couldn’t have planned.

SOMOS is a dream that is finally taking shape, a space where stories of inspiration, growth, and resilience can be seen, felt, and shared. One that connects and reflects who we are.

This is just the beginning of a voice we hope will continue to grow, one that opens doors and brings our community closer.

It’s finally here!

We’ve been working long days and nights to make this magazine a reality, and I can’t believe the day has finally come.

We created Somos to bring together voices from across North Central Florida to celebrate art, community, culture and so much more. This magazine is a reflection of all of us.

For our first edition, we honor mothers.

Moms care for us, give us hope and they love unconditionally. They are the jefas of the family, and the quiet force that holds everything together. Moms are always moving, they’re always giving, and always finding a way to keep going, they’re always ready for a hug, a kiss “y un te quiero mi amor”. The world is better because of them.

In this issue, you’ll meet incredible moms from all walks of life: multicultural, dynamic and inspiring. They are dancers, executives, lawyers, housemakers, entrepreneurs, but above all they are mothers.

A happy mother’s day to all moms out there, especially to mine…

IN THE HEART OF GAINESVILLE THE STORY OF HOW BAZAR. A SPACE FOR EVERYONE.

W

e met Laila Fakhory in the middle of a busy downtown market. The event, a partnership between the City of Gainesville and How Bazar, was created to bring life to the streets during the quiet winter months. As we talked, she moved between directing vendors and showing exactly how she builds community in real-time.

Laila’s vision is deeply shaped by her Palestinian heritage, where she learned early that “community is everything and all we have.” Her work is rooted in recreating that feeling—a space where people don’t just gather, but truly belong. Coming from such a collective culture, she admits the more individualistic pace of American life once felt disheartening. But in Gainesville, she found something different: people quietly searching for the same sense of belonging, ese sentido de comunidad that feels like home. That realization remains at the core of what she’s been building through How Bazar.

She describes the space as a “third place”—a sociological sanctuary outside of home and work where people can decompress, co-work, and build lasting memories.

“You have your first place—home.

Your second place—work. But to live a full life, you need a third,” she explains. “A place where you can just exist, meet people, create, and build something beyond who you are at home or at work.”

That vision takes shape in many ways: through the Big: Culture & Arts Festival, which she organizes with her best friend Jahi Khalfani, and in spaces like the Downtown Market Series, where we sat talking as the afternoon settled in and everything gradually came together around us.

For people who don’t know you, can you tell us about your journey?

I came to Gainesville to attend the University of Florida, where I double-majored in Family, Youth, and Community Sciences—a combination of social work and philosophy. The first day I arrived, I started working at the crisis center, doing crisis and suicide hotlines.

I also worked in the hospital, at the Hippodrome Theater, and with the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding.

Even before college, I was already volunteering in the prison while still in high school.

All of this was really shaped by my identity as Palestinian. Growing up, I learned that community is everything, and that inspired me to give back. Doing this work also helped me get to know Gainesville and appreciate the city, it’s resource-rich, supportive, open, and welcoming.

After getting more involved in social work, I started exploring Gainesville’s creative spaces. I loved how many different people were constantly creating new things. Being part of that inspired me to start hosting my own events and bringing people together in new ways.

What inspired you to start How Bazar?

It started after a project with my friends Jahi and Khary Khalfani. In college, we created an independent music record label together—Dion Dia—using music for social good, recording in hospitals and prisons to help people preserve their stories. Then we began hosting events to fund those projects, and we quickly saw how powerful it was to bring people together. People who normally didn’t go out were showing up and finding real connection.

When COVID happened, everything stopped. That’s when we asked ourselves what else we could offer the community, and that’s how How Bazar began. We opened a small space in the Seagal Building and started hosting outdoor markets, creating a safe way for people to connect and for artists to sustain themselves. From there, it kept growing because it was filling a real need.

How would you describe How Bazar to someone who has never visited?

A third place where people are able to shape it into whatever they want it to be. People come in and work, co-work, study, hang out, relax, drink coffee, meet other people— really whatever they want the space to be.

It’s also used for events, where anyone can plug in and use it in an accessible way to build their own experiences and bring their own communities together. I describe it as a community hub for people to create within and connect within.

Why do you think people were drawn to this space in the first place?

Every time we did an event, the first question I asked myself was: how can we include as many people as possible? That approach started to diversify the events and make them extremely inclusive. My favorite part is standing there and taking a 360-degree look at the vendors.

Everyone looks completely different, different interests, different backgrounds.

People started to see that it was okay to explore, and that freedom created a stronger desire to connect.

Throughout our conversation, it became clear that the city is starting to recognize the impact of this third place. The very day we met, Laila had received a Beautification Award from the city. She seemed genuinely surprised: “I was like, what? I’m so surprised!” For years, How Bazar has been a DIY, grassroots, self-funded project. Seeing the city give awards in 2023 and 2026 feels like a shift in Gainesville’s priorities— more attention on the creative community, on the arts, on the people quietly doing the work.

Getting this space was a big fight. The only reason it worked out is because we had been building community in that little temporary location. When we reached out for support, hundreds of people contacted the county and the City Commission. People were saying, “This needs to be an arts hub. We don’t need more leasing offices or spaces that don’t resonate with the community.”

That community support was the most validating thing I’ve ever experienced. There’s nothing greater than having people say, “Yes, we want this space.” That’s still the most motivating thing and knowing people want it, that we need to push through because so many are behind us.

What have you learned from the Gainesville community?

What has been your biggest challenge?

What I always say is that How Bazar exists because of Gainesville. It couldn’t have happened anywhere else. This community is connected, forgiving, open, and very weird. A space like this can’t happen everywhere— there are barriers in other places, a cliquey energy that exists in bigger cities.

So many! One that comes to mind was moving into this location. We were in a temporary space on a month-by-month contract and knew that wasn’t going to work. We wanted something purposefully central in downtown—right in the middle of the action, for our communities.

Gainesville has an environment where it’s easy to experiment, easy to explore, as a business owner, as a creator, or even just as someone who wants to attend events. That openness makes it possible for a space like How Bazar to thrive.

What has it been like for your family to see what you’ve built?

Coming from a Middle Eastern background, this path looked very different from what they expected. Lawyer, doctor, something more understood. But in a way, they kind of saw it coming, because I’ve always been different from my siblings and my cousins.

Still, it took a while for them to really wrap their heads around it. That understanding didn’t come through explanation. It came through witnessing.

Now they come to events, they see things like this come out in magazines, and they’re like, okay, we understand now. When you have that support, it’s everything...

Finally, you’re around the community all the time, what do you do to relax?

My favorite thing is to cook. It’s my main way to turn off my mind. If I say after a meeting, “I’m going home to cook,”everyone knows they’re not going to hear from me the rest of the night. I also love biking—it helps me clear my head. And I love going to other people’s events, to experience, get inspiration, and try not to think about my own. It’s nice to just be an attendee. That’s actually how all of this started.

While building this vision, Laila worked alongside a team for years. Recently, she shared a major transition: How Bazar, once a worker-owned collective with five partners, is entering a new chapter. As her partners move on to new paths, Laila is stepping into the role of sole owner—but her commitment hasn’t wavered.

She says she’s “too in love” with the project to stop.

And that love shows.

The way people gather at the markets and come together, not just to shop, but to connect- and how a simple market transforms into something more meaningful.

In a city like Gainesville—where so many of us are building lives between cultures—entre aquí y allá—spaces like How Bazar remind us that community doesn’t just happen.

It’s created. Protected. And shared.

In Her Own Words A song that inspires you?

“Golden” by Jill Scott. Every time I’m like, “What am I doing with my life?” It just makes me feel okay.

Favorite local food spot?

Wahaha, a Thai restaurant attached to a motel. People get scared of it, but it’s so good. I’ve been going since I first moved here.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee. I love the ritual of it. It helps me focus before the day starts.

Morning person or night owl?

Both, honestly. I love early mornings because it’s peaceful and no one interrupts me, but I also work late. I just need to go to bed earlier.

T

here’s a weight that comes with being far from the place where we were born, far from our families, and from the traditions familiar to us. It’s a feeling that’s hard to explain but easy to recognize, like something within us is still missing or unsettled.

In the middle of that process, something as simple and as powerful as community can make all the difference. Finding community grounds us. It protects us from feeling invisible, disconnected, or alone, and gives us a sense of belonging.

Immigrating, in itself, is a difficult journey. For many, it requires starting over, often from zero, and sometimes alone. We learn how to navigate systems we don’t fully understand at first, adjust to a new language, and keep up with a pace of life that feels constant, fast, and overwhelming.

Here, everything moves quickly, and it can take time to find our place within it.

It is from that desire to create connection and belonging that the Latina Women’s League was born. For over two decades, this local nonprofit has created spaces where women come together, not only to support one another, but also to grow, learn, and give back.

Their impact goes beyond its members.

Through initiatives like educational workshops, English classes, Spanish story time, cultural events such as the Gainesville Latino Film Festival, and food distributions, this organization connects resources with those who need them, and strengthens the community around it.

When speaking with some of its members, a common thread becomes clear. The Latina Women’s League is not just a space, it’s an experience shaped by connection, service, and shared identity.

For Fedra Majjul, an active member, the League represents “a space of connection for our Latin community, one that seeks to preserve our traditions while creating opportunities to participate in social, cultural, and educational spaces.” She also shared how, on a personal level, the League has allowed her to build meaningful relationships, “interweaving bonds of friendship and companionship,” something she describes as essential to our human need for connection. Through her involvement, she has also found purpose in service, offering her time and energy to support events and initiatives that benefit the broader community.

For Isabel Álvarez, also an active member of the League, the experience reflects another side of that journey. “The League has been a door to integration and growth,” she shared. As an immigrant, it has helped her adapt to a new system while continuing to contribute to the Hispanic community. Through her participation in initiatives like food distributions, Spanish classes, citizenship support, and volunteer work, she has strengthened her sense of purpose. “The League has had a very positive impact in my life, giving me a sense of belonging, personal growth, and the opportunity to serve with intention.”

And it is precisely that sense of connection that draws many women to the Latina Women’s League. What they find, however, often goes beyond expectations.

They find friendships that become part of their everyday lives. They find women who inspire them, entrepreneurs, professionals, and mothers who share their knowledge and experiences with generosity. They find a community of women willing to give their time, to show up, and to support others without hesitation.

At the League, culture is celebrated and shared with pride. Through each event, gathering, and conversation, there is a constant reminder of where members come from and how those roots continue to shape who they are. That culture is also passed on to younger generations, who learn to embrace it as their own, even if they have not lived in or spent much time in their countries of origin.

In many ways, the League helps maintain a connection to those roots while reinforcing the idea that home and belonging are not defined by a place, but by what is built together.

Este restaurantepub coreano sirve el tipo de comida que convierte a los nuevos clientes, en comensales de por vida: su pollo frito coreano es una obra maestra del género: crujiente por fuera, jugoso por dentro, y sin una gota de grasa de más, y el Army Stew, una olla humeante de cerdo, spam, ramen, kimchi, pastelitos de arroz y queso derretido, es el tipo de comfort food que uno no sabía que necesitaba hasta probarlo. Las porciones son muy generosas y el ambiente es una mezcla K-pop con luz tenue, y si vas con el grupo correcto de amigos, puedes reservar uno de sus cuartos privados de karaoke.

PIRATE GRILL Frente a TJ Maxx, este restaurante familiar, es manejado por una pareja jubilada que pone el corazón en cada plato. Su hummus es cremoso y lleno de sabor, y los postres— como el honey cake y el chocolate cake— son pequeños pedacitos de cielo. Más que una comida, es como un abrazo en forma de comida.

El lomo saltado es un must! Tierno, jugoso y con ese toque de wok que lo hace irresistible. ¿Prefieres Colombia? La bandeja paisa llega a la mesa cargada de tradición y sabor, de esas que te dejan completamente satisfecho.

Es perfecto para una salida en pareja, con amigos o en familia. Porque en Tinker no solo se come bien sino que se disfruta cada visita.

SAMBA Si tienes antojo de comida brasileña casera, este lugar es el indicado. Probamos el escondidinho, un plato reconfortante hecho con capas suaves de puré de papa y un relleno bien sazonado (generalmente carne), horneado hasta quedar calentito y cremoso. EL CEREBRO CÓMO CREAR NUEVOS PATRONES EMOCIONALES

L

ili sabe exactamente cómo va a reaccionar.

Cada vez que su jefe le pide un informe para la siguiente semana, algo en ella se activa de inmediato — el mismo nudo en el estómago, la misma urgencia de hacer cualquier cosa menos eso. Llama a una amiga que no ha visto en meses, reorganiza los cajones de la cocina, compra cosas que no necesita. Pasa así toda la semana. Y un día antes de la entrega, el cuerpo le cobra la factura: manos sudorosas, corazón acelerado, una mente que no para de producir imágenes de fracaso, de burla, de la cara decepcionada de su jefe.

Trasnochada y agotada, logra entregar el informe a tiempo.

Pero la experiencia, otra vez, fue terrible.

Lili conoce ese patrón de memoria. Se lo reprocha, se promete que la próxima vez será diferente. Y sin embargo, al mes siguiente, la escena se repite con una precisión casi mecánica.

Lo que Lili no sabe es que no está sola. Lo que vive es una respuesta que comparten muchas personas que crecieron en ambientes donde constantemente debieron demostrar que eran suficientes — en casa, en el colegio, con los adultos que los rodeaban.

Esa pregunta que no siempre se formula en palabras pero que se siente en el cuerpo: ¿Seré lo suficientemente buena? ¿Si me atrevo, recibiré burla, rechazo, desaprobación?

No es falta de disciplina ni de carácter. Es miedo. Y detrás del miedo, una creencia que nació mucho antes que el trabajo, que el jefe, que el informe.

Muchas de estas experiencias aparecen en los primeros años de vida y llevan una carga emocional tan intensa que el cerebro las registra como caminos prioritarios: rutas que se activan automáticamente cada vez que las condiciones son parecidas.

Las emociones de miedo o tristeza profunda son neurológicamente más “pegajosas” que las de alegría o sorpresa, porque el cerebro las clasifica como información de supervivencia y se asegura de no olvidarlas. Tanto es así que esas respuestas emocionales viajan entre 200 y 400 milisegundos antes de que tengamos conciencia de ellas — y por eso se sienten tan fuera de control.

El cerebro construye así lo que podríamos imaginar como senderos en un campo: cada vez que el campesino pasa por el mismo camino rumbo al trabajo, la hierba se aplana más, el paso se vuelve más hondo, más automático. Y donde antes había césped, ya solo hay tierra.

EL CEREBRO EMOCIONAL Cuando les explico esto a mis pacientes, la pregunta que suele venir después es casi siempre la misma: “¿Entonces ya no tengo remedio?”

Y la respuesta es un rotundo no. Nada más alejado de la realidad.

El sistema nervioso tiene una facultad extraordinaria llamada neuroplasticidad: la capacidad de crear nuevas conexiones, de reorganizarse frente a experiencias nuevas, de moldearse a lo largo de toda la vida. No es una propiedad exclusiva del cerebro de los niños. Mientras el organismo esté vivo, tendrá la posibilidad de cambiar. La neuroplasticidad no tiene fecha de vencimiento.

Y hay algo más que pocas veces se menciona: esa plasticidad no se limita al cerebro. El intestino, por ejemplo, tiene su propio sistema nervioso — el llamado “segundo cerebro” — con alrededor de 500 millones de neuronas y más del 90% de la serotonina del cuerpo. Cuando sientes “un nudo en el estómago” antes de una situación difícil, no es solo una metáfora: es tu segundo cerebro respondiendo. Lo que sucede en el cuerpo y lo que sucede en la mente no son cosas separadas.

EL CEREBRO CREADOR Cambiar un patrón emocional exige, antes que nada, conocerlo. Las primeras preguntas no son las más cómodas, pero sí las más necesarias: ¿Qué siento ante esta situación? ¿Qué momento de mi historia me recuerda? ¿Dónde lo siento en el cuerpo — en el pecho, en la garganta, en el estómago? ¿Qué tan intenso es?

Reconocer esa asociación entre emoción y experiencia es el primer paso real. Porque cuando la entiendes, puedes anticiparte.

Y cuando puedes anticiparte, puedes elegir responder diferente.

Para Lili, por ejemplo, la pregunta que podría cambiar todo no es “¿Cómo evito el pánico?”, sino esta: ¿Y si esta vez el informe queda tan bien que mi jefe me felicita delante de todos? Suena pequeño. Pero esa pregunta hace algo muy concreto en el cerebro: siembra duda sobre el fracaso inevitable. Y donde hay duda, puede entrar la esperanza.

Si comienzas a recorrer ese nuevo camino — aunque sea con inseguridad al principio — con emociones de calma, de orgullo anticipado, de satisfacción, estarás construyendo literalmente un sendero alternativo en tu sistema nervioso. Con el tiempo y la repetición, ese sendero nuevo se vuelve más ancho. El viejo no desaparece del todo, pero empieza a llenarse de hierba.

Hay una herramienta que siempre menciono en consulta y que la ciencia respalda: la imaginación. El cerebro no distingue con claridad entre lo que vive y lo que imagina con suficiente detalle y emoción. Visualizar escenarios donde sales adelante — donde entregas el informe y respiras con alivio, donde te paras frente al grupo y te sorprendes de lo bien que lo haces — activa los mismos circuitos que si lo estuvieras viviendo. Eso no es pensamiento positivo ingenuo. Es neurociencia aplicada.

TÚ TIENES LA PALABRA Quizás te has reconocido en Lili. Quizás tu versión del informe es una conversación difícil que postergues semanas, un proyecto que no arrancas, una oportunidad que dejas pasar porque algo en ti dice que no eres suficiente. Sea cual sea tu patrón, tiene nombre, tiene origen, y tiene solución.

Reprogramar el cerebro no es borrarse a uno mismo ni olvidar lo que se vivió. Es entender que aquella niña o aquel niño que aprendió a tener miedo hizo lo que tenía que hacer para sobrevivir en su momento. Y que hoy, como adulto, tienes algo que entonces no tenías: la posibilidad de elegir un camino nuevo.

El primer paso no es el más grande. Es simplemente el primero.

Si algo de lo que leíste hoy resuena contigo y sientes que es momento de empezar a trabajar en esos patrones, busca el acompañamiento de un profesional de salud mental.

ometimes, when people think of wellness, they think of perfection. A flawless routine and feeling good 24/7.

In reality, wellness goes far beyond what we often see online. It’s not all about yoga or finding your zen state, and it’s certainly not about having a perfect routine where you feel happy all the time.

For me, it’s about constantly working on myself and how I can make myself feel better in all areas of my life: school, work, eating habits, exercise, family, and community. Practicing wellness can look like going for a walk after a stressful day or

IDENTIFY YOUR FEELINGS IN THE MORNING During your morning routine, take a moment to notice how you’re feeling.

carry with you for the rest of the day. If the answer is yes, think about what small things you can do to maintain that feeling.

If the answer is no, how can you shift your mood during the day? Maybe it’s as simple as enjoying your favorite comfort food or watching an episode of a show you love. It can be any activity you enjoy that helps you feel better.

FOOD BEFORE COFFEE Sometimes we get so caught up in our routines that we think the fastest way to wake up is by having caffeine first thing in the morning, but this can have some potential side effects. According to the Cleveland Clinic, drinking coffee on an empty stomach can make you feel anxious, jittery, or irritable.

Make a simple shift. Try starting your morning with a protein-rich meal instead. It helps keep your energy steady, makes you feel full longer, and helps you start your day feeling better.

NOT USING YOUR PHONE OR WATCHING TV WHILE EATING This is something I catch myself doing all the time, and I’m trying to improve.

We are always trying to be entertained, and we sometimes forget that it’s okay to be bored or just give our brains a break from all the media we consume every day.

Putting your phone away or turning off the TV while eating is a way to be present and pay attention to what you’re putting into your body.

just play your favorite song and dance in your room.

And if you think 20 minutes won’t do much, remember that 20 minutes of movement is better than nothing.

PRACTICING SELFCOMPASSION For one of my classes this semester, we’ve been reading The Gift of Imperfection by Brené Brown, and every week we identify a feeling within ourselves and relate it to what we have read in the book. This book talks a lot about self-compassion and how to start implementing it into your life.

For example, instead of spending an hour at the gym, I chose to go on a 20-minute walk because I was feeling too tired. I could have been hard on myself for skipping the gym and found a million reasons to feel guilty, but instead I chose self-compassion.

I understand that not every day has to look the same when it comes to exercise. Some days I feel more energetic and will work out for an hour, but there are also days when I need to prioritize my well-being and focus on simply feeling good. In those moments, that might look like going for a quick, relaxing walk.

MOVING YOUR BODY Sounds cliché, I know, but it really does work. Exercise is the #1 way to boost serotonin naturally, a neurotransmitter that also acts as a hormone and plays multiple roles in your body, such as regulating sleep, memory, and, of course, happiness.

Now, try to identify the actions and habits that help you feel present and allow you to slow down. Everyone’s wellness journey looks different, and what works for one person might not work for another. The important part is paying attention to what makes you feel balanced and supported in your daily life.

According to Mental Health America, just 20 minutes a day can help increase serotonin levels.

Exercise can feel even more rewarding when it’s something you genuinely enjoy and look forward to. If you like dancing, you could join a local community dance group (like Gator Salsa) or

n una ciudad como Gainesville, donde las historias se construyen entre culturas, esfuerzo y sueños compartidos, hay mujeres que sostienen múltiples mundos con una naturalidad que inspira. En esta edición especial en honor al Día de las Madres, nos acercamos a la historia de Laura dePaz. Abogada de inmigración reconocida en la comunidad, voz cercana que orienta e informa, cantante sobre el escenario… y mamá.

Para Laura, la maternidad no es solo un rol: está presente en todo lo demás que es y hace; el sombrero que nunca se quita.

Madre de tres, cada uno con su propia esencia, Laura ha aprendido que criar no es moldear, sino acompañar. Es enseñar con el ejemplo, soltar expectativas, elegir batallas y, sobre todo, formar seres humanos con empatía, voz y conciencia del mundo que los rodea.

En medio de una realidad compleja, marcada por los retos sociales y migratorios que vive de cerca, Laura ha decidido no criar desde el miedo, sino desde la verdad, la educación y la humanidad.

Más allá de sus logros profesionales y su presencia en la comunidad, quisimos conocer a Laura desde un lugar más cercano: el de mamá.

y que trato de inculcar a mis hijos también porque me ha servido de mucha ayuda, no solo como ser humano sino también profesionalmente.

Al mismo tiempo, fuera de casa, la realidad era distinta y debido a eso tuve una crisis de identidad.

Me sentía muy puertorriqueña, muy latina, con mi comida, mi música, mi idioma, pero afuera era distinto. En esa época había muy pocas familias latinas en esta zona, así que fue un choque tratar de entender quién era yo entre esos dos mundos: el de mi casa y el de la escuela.

Es algo que he navegado toda mi vida. Siempre he sido curiosa, abierta a conocer otras culturas, a viajar, a explorar… pero con la familia siempre al frente.

Para mí, eso nunca fue negociable.

Esa dualidad me marcó. Me enseñó a adaptarme, a observar y a conectar con diferentes mundos sin dejar de ser quien soy. ¿Qué valores de tu cultura latina has decidido mantener como no negociables dentro de tu hogar?

Sin duda, el sentido de comunidad y de humanidad.

Yo tuve el privilegio de tener unos abuelos retirados que todos los veranos nos llevaban a Puerto Rico, el verano entero, y pude percibir ese sentido de comunidad.

Volvamos al inicio. Antes de todo lo que hoy eres, ¿cómo recuerdas a la niña que fuiste? fui la hija mayor, la primera nieta en una familia latina… y eso ya dice mucho.

Como dicen por ahí, la hija mayor es como “la gerente de la familia”, y creo que eso me define bastante. Desde pequeña fui independiente, curiosa, “bien astuta”, como dirían en casa.

Nací en Gainesville, pero me crié en un ambiente muy puertorriqueño, rodeada de familia. En casa todo era arroz y habichuelas, música de Juan Luis Guerra y Héctor Lavoe, y español. Mis papás se rehusaron a dejarme hablar inglés en la casa, algo que hoy agradezco mucho

O sea, en Puerto Rico, hasta el día de hoy, y me imagino que en muchos países latinoamericanos, uno está aquí, en un café, tomándose algo , y si alguien entra por esa puerta dice: “buen provecho”, “buenos días”. Tú no lo conoces, no sabes ni su nombre, pero existe ese sentido de saludar, de mirar a los ojos, de reconocer al otro.

Allá, en Puerto Rico, todos somos primos, todo el mundo es el tití, el vecino necesita algo y uno piensa ¿qué puedo hacer? Ese espíritu de colaboración.

Obviamente, especialmente ahora como mamá, uno también tiene que tener cautela. No es confiar en todo el mundo, pero tampoco aislarse, sino tener presente que las decisiones que yo tome pueden tener impacto en otros, y si una decisión no me afecta a mí, pero otra puede ayudar a alguien más o evitar un impacto negativo en otros, yo entiendo que, como ser humano, es importante tomar esa decisión.

Cuando te convertiste en mamá, ¿qué cambió en ti?

Todo, todo, todo. Es cómico, cuando estás embarazada por primera vez, te dicen que tu vida va a cambiar, y yo creo que uno, en el sentido lógico, dice “sí, claro”, pero no se da cuenta de cuán grande es el cambio… es un cambio irreversible.

Esa vida que tú tenías, esa independencia, esa seguridad en tus acciones, ya… olvídate de esa vida. De ahora en adelante, vas a tener constantemente una preocupación por vidas que no son la tuya.

Ser mamá, para mí, es el trabajo más difícil del mundo. Y también cambió mi sentido de mortalidad dramáticamente. Después de ser mamá, me dio un temor horrible a volar en avión. Yo viajaba a Puerto Rico cada dos meses, entre los 19 y los 22 años, sin pestañear…

Ahora todo es distinto.

Salir de mi casa, manejar en la autopista, viajar sola sin los niños… todo viene con esa pregunta constante de “¿y si me pasa algo?”. Y también está esa preocupación de darles apoyo, darles amor, encontrar una balanza entre ser mamá, ser profesional, ser esposa, ser hijo.

¿Qué parte de la maternidad te ha sorprendido más?

La lucha constante entre tus distintos roles e intereses. Y el hecho de que, sin importar cuántas cosas tengas o hagas fuera de tu rol de mamá, nunca puedes “quitarte el sombrero” de madre.

Ese rol lo permea todo: cada decisión, cada momento, cada acción desde el instante en que te conviertes en mamá. Tus hijos influyen en cada parte de ti, todo el tiempo.

¿Qué te ha enseñado la maternidad sobre ti misma?

Que si logro ser aunque sea un 15% de la madre que la mía fue conmigo (y sigue siendo), mis hijos estarán bendecidos.

La maternidad me ha hecho darme cuenta de lo increíblemente subestimadas que están las mamás, hasta que te toca vivirlo en carne propia y entiendes todo lo que hacen.

Mi mamá ha sido un ejemplo de entrega y amor incondicional. Fue tan desinteresada con nosotros que, si yo logro ser aunque sea una pequeña fracción de eso, sé que mis hijos van a estar bien.

Yo siempre he dicho que, mi por qué, es mi familia.

Pero ese, por qué, a veces, compite con otras necesidades, con otras obligaciones.

Ser mamá es tratar a diario de balancear cosas, personas y vidas que forman parte esencial de tu ser.

Antes, las decisiones importaban,claro. Pero ahora, todo adquiere otra dimensión: el valor de las cosas, la preocupación y la atención se multiplican por mil, por un millón.

Cada uno de tus hijos tiene una esencia distinta. ¿Qué sientes que has aprendido de cada uno?

Ethan, el mayor, me ha enseñado paciencia. A entender que no tan solo porque uno puede, significa que debe. A soltar expectativas, a no tratar de encajar todo en una sola forma, sino a permitirle encontrar su propio camino, a su ritmo.

Camila, la del medio, me ha enseñado sensibilidad, empatía y también alegría. A reconectar con esa parte COVER STORY

más ligera, a ser “silly”, a reír, a disfrutar lo simple. Y también me ha retado a enseñarle a poner límites, a entender el valor de sus emociones y cómo manejarlas.

Y Alejandro, el más pequeño… me ha enseñado a soltar. A escoger mis batallas.

A preguntarme constantemente: “¿qué tan importante es esto realmente?”. Porque hay momentos en los que simplemente hay que decir: “let it go” y entender que no todo tiene que ser perfecto.

Cada uno viene con su propia esencia, con su propio “chip”, y uno como mamá aprende que no es moldearlos, es acompañarlos. Es observar, entender quiénes son y crecer con ellos en el proceso.

¿Qué esperanzas tienes para la generación que tus hijos representan?

Tengo esperanza. De verdad la tengo.

Creo que esta generación viene con una apertura distinta. Ven las cosas con más humanidad, con menos prejuicios.

Mi hijo, por ejemplo, ve temas que antes eran difíciles para otras generaciones, y no pestañea.

Y eso me da esperanza… porque muchas de las divisiones que vemos hoy vienen del miedo, de no entender al otro.

Yo confío en que ellos van a ver más allá de eso y construir algo mejor. ¿Tú ayudas a muchas familias en momentos vulnerables relacionados a temas migratorios ¿Cómo impacta eso tu manera de criar?

Va completamente de la mano. El trabajo que hago y las familias a las que sirvo impactan directamente en nuestras comunidades y nuestra sociedad, las mismas en las que mis hijos están creciendo y en las que eventualmente se convertirán en adultos.

Trato de enseñarles, que todos somos parte de la misma humanidad. Que la mayoría de las decisiones que tomamos y las cosas que hacemos tienen un efecto dominó; no nos impactan únicamente a nosotros de manera individual.

También les enseño que cuando nos enfrentamos a decisiones que pueden beneficiarnos a nosotros pero perjudicar a otros, tenemos la responsabilidad como seres humanos de elegir siempre la opción que cause el menor daño posible o que genere el mayor bien, incluso si eso significa que el beneficio para mí, individualmente, sea menor.

Gran parte de mi profesión, especialmente en este momento, requiere que sacrifique tiempo con mis hijos. Es un sacrificio, pero también una decisión que tengo que balancear constantemente. Aunque en muchos casos mis hijos y yo podríamos beneficiarnos más si yo me enfocara únicamente en ellos, cuando se presenta la oportunidad, elegir (en ciertos

momentos y cuando es necesario) sacrificar ese tiempo por las familias a las que sirvo es una forma de escoger el bien mayor, no solo el bien personal.

Intento demostrarles esto con el ejemplo y cultivar en ellos un sentido profundo de comunidad, humanidad y conexión, con la esperanza de que se conviertan en defensores de la justicia y utilicen su voz para amplificar la de quienes no siempre tienen una.

Como mamá, ¿cómo has acompañado a tus hijos a entender temas complejos como la inmigración?

Como mamá, trato de no criar desde el miedo, pero tampoco desde la ignorancia. Es encontrar ese balance de cómo hablarles dependiendo de la edad, pero sin esconder la realidad.

Siempre les explico el por qué de lo que hago.

Que mi trabajo no es solo un trabajo, sino que impacta vidas reales y que hay personas que dependen de decisiones que se toman todos los días.

También trato de que entiendan el privilegio que tenemos y la responsabilidad que viene con eso. Que no todo el mundo tiene las mismas oportunidades, y que eso no es algo que uno puede ignorar.

Para mí es importante que tengan voz. Que no se queden callados frente a la injusticia, que puedan defender a otros, que entiendan que incluso una palabra, una acción, puede hacer una diferencia.

Y también enseñarles a tener empatía. A ver la humanidad en otras personas, a no juzgar sin entender, a saber que detrás de cada historia hay algo más.

Cuando te sientes cansada o abrumada, ¿quién te sostiene? ¿Quién cuida de ti en medio de todo lo que das a los demás?

Curiosamente, mi mamá.

Tengo el privilegio de tenerla muy cerca, de poder verla y hablar con ella todos los días. A esta altura de mi vida, sigue siendo mi lugar seguro.

Y mi esposo… sin duda. Es mi pareja en todo COVER STORY

el sentido de la palabra. Cuando yo estoy a un 10%, él está al 100%. Nos sostenemos mutuamente, y eso hace toda la diferencia.

También tengo un grupo de amistades, especialmente en lo profesional, que entienden lo que uno vive. No tengo que explicar mucho, porque ya hay ese entendimiento.

Pero, al final, es mi familia. Mi núcleo.

Las personas que me recuerdan que no tengo que poder con todo sola.

Si tus hijos leyeran esta entrevista en 20 años, ¿qué te gustaría que entendieran de ti?

Que todo lo que hice, lo hice por ellos.

Que no ha sido fácil. Que el balance nunca es perfecto. Pero que cada decisión, incluso las más difíciles, ha sido pensando en darles lo mejor.

Espero que estén orgullosos de mí. Que entiendan que he tratado de ser la mejor mamá que puedo ser, no perfecta, pero sí presente, consciente y llena de amor.

Y que, al final, me recuerden con el mismo cariño, admiración y gratitud con el que yo veo a mi mamá.

De toda mi conversación con Laura, hay algo que queda claro: Laura, no intenta ser todo al mismo tiempo. Pero, de alguna manera, lo es.

En ella conviven distintas dimensiones de una vida construida con intención.

No desde la perfección, sino desde ese esfuerzo diario por estar, guiar, amar y construir algo que trascienda.

Porque al final, más allá de todos sus roles, hay una certeza que lo sostiene todo: su por qué es su familia.

Y es desde ahí que elige seguir adelante, incluso en días difíciles, sabiendo que al final, lo que permanece está en el ejemplo, en las memorias construidas en esa esencia humana, que no siempre es perfecta, pero sí real y auténtica, y en la huella que deja en sus hijos día tras día.

The children’s playdates soon branched into moms getting together to celebrate their birthdays, family events, festivals, and holidays. Everyone eagerly waited for Chinese New Year, Diwali, Korean New Year, Christmas and Halloween and enjoyed each other’s unique traditions and foods. The keenness to eat sticky rice cakes and mooncake on Lunar New Year and Moon Festival, and the excitement of receiving red envelopes that contained money was unparalleled. Visiting each other’s home presented with a unique prospect of engaging in each other’s culture, the appreciation and understanding of colorful textiles from India, handmade crochets from Peru, essentials from Korea stocked up in the pantry curated a quintessential canvas. They were enriching each other’s lives at a profound and consequential scale.

The parenting style seemed to be in complete synchronization given the diversification. With moms endlessly juggling between home, chores, work, school, interdependence was inevitable.

To navigate through crucial situations like flat tires, doctor’s appointments, or inconsistent schedules to playful situations, like me time, spa time, missed alarm, asking for help never seemed formidable.

Responsibilities were not overwhelming anymore. These moms had found their village to raise their children. They had been united with the extended families they incessantly longed for. The children had found their uncles and aunties, their cheerleaders, their confidantes, and their mentors.

The relentless search for true, deep, and lifelong friendship was wrapped up. The moms got a sense of security for having found nonjudgmental friends. They had steered their friendships in a direction where they shared daily struggles, vented frustrations, confided in deep seated fears, celebrated their children’s achievements,

talked about school and teachers, had lighthearted conversations, sang and danced together, shared meals, and created moments that were therapeutic. Love and friendship chimed and they were all united in celebrating together, despite cultural diversity. Being expatriate moms was no longer challenging; they had found their clique.

Chaucer wrote in his famous epic poem, “Troilus and Criseyde”, “But at the laste, as every thing hath ende, She took hir leve, and nedes wolde wende.” It has been universally proven that all good things come to an end.

After being inseparable for six years and in the vicissitudes of all ups and downs, highs and lows, two families had to move. This new situation presented a new set of challenges; it seemed almost impossible to navigate through this uncalled-for predicament. They felt like they were back to square one. They were not primed to go through this ordeal of separation, loneliness and impasse. They didn’t want to lose the friendship they had found and were so dependent on. No one was ready to initiate the process of knitting a brand-new life without each other. The thought of not being able to see each other daily, not being able to celebrate birthdays and holidays together, was inducing stress and anxiety. The warm blanket of friendship was being pulled over, and the feeling of loneliness, and displacement was grappling them again.

Would they have to restart to find their sanctuary where friends had become family? Would they struggle again with their hyphenated existence? Would it take them forever to find friends again that could give them the comfort of home, the same unrelented support? Would they be lamenting this loss for long? Would this long-distance debilitate their friendship?

Would there be awkward silence when they all meet again?

Then and now: a friendship across cultures.

One thing these friends had learnt from each other was to remain steadfast, no matter what the situation is. They all decided to process their emotions without resistance. If needed, they will cry, weep, or scream, but they will overcome it and stand strong and be together forever.

Their friendship didn’t come with an expiration date. They had built a life together, with unique memories. Their bond was strong; no distance would bring a gap. There would be intermittent moments of oscillation, a yearning for the past again where they could be together and desire to meet again soon. But with perseverance, and each other’s support, they were determined to stay strong and uplifting and far or near, the distance would not cripple their love and fondness for each other. What they had was irreplaceable, and they would preserve it. This was not the end. It was the beginning of new hopes, new life. It helped them reinforce their friendship at different levels.

Every end has a new beginning. In the present

times, they are all finding their balance; they are all trying to carve new rituals. They are painting their canvas with new colors of friendship, but there is a canvas that will hold all their fond memories. A canvas that doesn’t end up in an attic of their memory but stands tall on the wall of their family room.

It has been four years; all the boys are in high school. The moms make an effort to meet once or twice a year. These annual or semi-annual visits help everyone rejuvenate, restore, heal, and relive the moments. Be it a four-day long weekend, or winter break, staying up all night, talking nonstop, shopping, sharing meals, they condense six months in the minimal time they have when they meet, making new memories.

They get their six-month dose of love and affection, and they are re-energized. Their hearts are full.

Four moms, all immigrants with one common thread: their friendship.

CÓMO DESPEJAR Y ORGANIZAR TU ESPACIO SIN ABRUMARTE Por: Karolina Banda

ay algo casi invisible que sucede cuando nuestros espacios en el hogar están abarrotados de cosas: clósets hasta el tope, cajones desbordados, repisas cubiertas de objetos que no hemos tocado en meses, pero que guardamos con la excusa de ser precavidos o “por si acaso” algún día los necesitamos.

No siempre lo notamos de inmediato, pero se manifiesta de formas pequeñas: en la duda antes de abrir un cajón, en esa lista mental que nunca parece terminarse, en la sensación de que nuestro hogar no refleja del todo lo que somos o queremos.

Nuestro entorno nos habla constantemente.

Y cuando está saturado, nuestra mente suele seguir ese mismo ritmo. La organización y la depuración de objetos en el hogar no se tratan de perfección ni de tener una casa de revista. Se trata de crear espacio, física y mentalmente, para lo que realmente importa en tu vida hoy.

POR QUÉ IMPORTA MÁS DE LO QUE CREEMOS Un espacio despejado no solo se ve bien, se siente diferente. Cuando tu entorno es más liviano, menos cargado, tu mente tiende a

seguirlo. Piensas con más claridad, te mueves con más facilidad e incluso las rutinas más simples se sienten menos pesadas.

Por otro lado, el exceso de cosas puede drenar tu energía en silencio. Genera ruido visual, indecisión y un nivel de estrés constante que muchas veces ni siquiera reconocemos. Depurar no se trata tanto de botar cosas, sino de hacer espacio para ti.

DATE UN LÍMITE DE TIEMPO. Toma 20 minutos de tu día. Programa una alarma. Eso es todo. No necesitas un día libre completo para avanzar. Sesiones cortas y enfocadas son más sostenibles, y funcionan mejor cuando tienes una agenda ocupada. Aquí, la consistencia vale más que la cantidad de tiempo que le dediques.

CREA CATEGORÍAS SIMPLES. A medida que revisas tus cosas, mantenlo sencillo: qué se queda, qué se dona, qué se desecha. Sin sistemas complicados.

Sin sobrepensarlo. Si dudas demasiado con un objeto, probablemente ya sabes la respuesta, solo estás negociando contigo.

ENTONCES… ¿POR DÓNDE EMPIEZAS? Si tienes una vida muy ocupada (¿y la de quién no?), la idea de organizar toda tu casa puede sentirse abrumadora. La clave está en mantenerlo simple y realista.

EMPIEZA POCO A POCO. Olvídate de toda la casa. Elige un cajón, una repisa, una esquina. El objetivo no es medir el progreso en metros cuadrados, sino generar impulso. Terminar algo pequeño te da una sensación de claridad y control que naturalmente te empuja a seguir.

PREGÚNTATE: “¿NECESITO ESTO AHORA?” En lugar de pensar “¿y si lo necesito algún día?”, intenta preguntarte: “¿esto apoya mi vida en este momento?” Si la respuesta es no, puede ser momento de dejarlo ir. Este simple cambio hace que las decisiones sean más fáciles y más honestas.

NO BUSQUES PERFECCIÓN, BUSCA LIGEREZA. Tu casa no tiene que parecer de revista.

Solo necesita sentirse mejor que antes.

Incluso soltar un 10% o 15% de lo que tienes puede hacer una gran diferencia en cómo se siente tu espacio y tu mente. yourself, and remember that progress matters more than perfection.

HAZLO PARTE DE TU RITMO. Depurar tu espacio no es algo que haces una sola vez. Es algo a lo que vuelves, con calma. Un cajón hoy. Un clóset la próxima semana. Un pequeño reinicio un domingo en la tarde. Poco a poco, tu espacio empieza a reflejar tu vida con más claridad, no quién eras antes ni quién podrías ser, sino quién eres hoy.

UNA FORMA DIFERENTE DE VERLO Despejar y organizar tu espacio no se trata de deshacerse de las cosas solo por hacerlo. Se trata de elegir con intención lo que se queda. Se trata de crear un hogar en el que sientas que puedes respirar.

Porque la tranquilidad no viene de comprar y guardar más cosas, sino de soltar lo que ya no necesitas. Y cuando lo haces, la diferencia no es solo visible. Es mental.

El ruido visual constante se desvanece. Las decisiones se sienten más fáciles. Tu espacio deja de exigirte y empieza a devolverte algo: calma, claridad y una sensación de control que no sabías que te hacía falta.

EN PRIMAVERA MONSTERAS, POTHOS Y EL ARTE DE PROPAGAR Por Silvana Fajardo

Mamá de plantas y convencida de que las plantas sanan el alma.

¿Te ha pasado que llegas a la casa de tu amiga o a un restaurante, y sin saber por qué, todo se siente más bonito? La luz parece más suave, el espacio más acogedor, y hay una sensación de calma difícil de explicar. Luego te das cuenta: son las plantas.

on pequeños toques de verde que transforman un espacio común en uno cuidado y lleno de energía.

Si sientes que a tu casa le falta un poco de esa energía, créeme cuando te digo, que las plantas pueden hacer esa diferencia que tu hogar necesita.

La primavera no llega en silencio, sino que entra como una invitación abierta a llenar tu espacio de vida. Es el momento perfecto para empezar tu jardín interior, incluso si nunca lo has intentado.

¿Por dónde empiezo si no sé nada de plantas?

Mi mejor secreto es simple: búscate una amiga obsesionada con las plantas. Sí, esa misma. Te prometo que nos encanta compartir. Un esqueje por aquí, una monstera bebé por allá… y, sin darte cuenta, ya tienes una colección creciendo sin haber gastado un centavo. Solo amor, tijeras y un vasito de agua.

Las reinas del mundo verde: Monsteras y Pothos Si todavía no tienes una Monstera, esta es tu señal para ir en busca de una.. Sus hojas grandes, dramáticas y perforadas son características de su hermosa personalidad. Y el Pothos… bueno, es prácticamente imposible de matar, y es ideal si estás empezando y aún no confías del todo en tu talento botánico.

¿Agua o tierra?

Tienes dos caminos, y ambos funcionan: En agua: coloca el esqueje en un recipiente transparente. Ver crecer las raíces es parte del encanto. Cambia el agua cada semana, pero si te olvidas, ¡no pasa nada! Solo no dejes que se seque.

En tierra: plántalo directamente en tierra húmeda. Es más rápido en algunos casos, pero requiere un poco más de atención.

Ambas tienen algo en común: 1. Son fáciles de propagar 2. Crecen rápido en primavera 3. Transforman cualquier espacio 4. NOTA IMPORTANTE para mamás de gatitos (y perritos):Tanto las Monsteras como los Pothos son tóxicos si se mastican. La solución es simple: colócalos en estantes altos o macetas colgantes que además se ven espectaculares.

Cómo propagar como experta (más fácil de lo que crees) Propagar suena técnico, pero en realidad es algo muy sencillo: crear nuevas plantas a partir de una que ya tienes. ¿Plantas gratis? Exacto.

Encuentra el corte correcto Busca un tallo con al menos un nodo, ese pequeño bultito en el tallo donde nacen las raíces. Sin nodo, no hay magia. Corta justo debajo con tijeras limpias.

La tierra correcta No cualquier tierra funciona. Las Monsteras prefieren una mezcla con buen drenaje: tierra para macetas combinada con perlita. Esto evita el exceso de humedad y mantiene las raíces sanas.

Los Pothos son más flexibles, pero también agradecen un buen drenaje.

Ahora, la luz es el detalle que lo cambia todo.

La ubicación es sumamente importante.

Antes de elegir dónde poner tus plantas, observa hacia dónde da tu ventana: Este: luz suave de mañana, ideal para la mayoría de plantas tropicales Oeste: sol de tarde, perfecto para Pothos Norte: luz baja, mejor optar por Pothos o plantas ZZ Sur: luz intensa — aquí las Monsteras realmente prosperan

Hoy lidera proyectos importantes dentro de la comunidad, pero llegó a este país con una bolsa plástica como única pertenencia. Lo que ocurrió entre ese momento y este es una historia sobre enfoque, disciplina y la claridad de saber exactamente quién eres.

ELIO, CUÉNTAME SOBRE ESOS PRIMEROS AÑOS EN CUBA. Mi infancia fue muy bonita, vengo de una familia muy humilde. De niño, mi pasión era el fútbol y todos pensaban que ese sería mi futuro porque parecía tener talento. Pero, a los siete años, unos profesores fueron a hacer pruebas de aptitudes musicales y un profesor notó que tenía talento.

Mi mamá, que trabajaba como recepcionista allí, me inscribió y el maestro quedó encantado!

Al final, elegí la música porque en Cuba tiene un peso cultural muy grande. A los nueve años ya estaba en la Escuela Vocacional de Arte (EVA), una escuela internado donde viví hasta los 15.

Luego fui al conservatorio por cuatro años. Esta experiencia me obligó a madurar rápido y ser independiente desde muy joven.profesor notó que tenía ritmo.

En el conservatorio había una orquesta sinfónica que me encantaba, recuerdo que dábamos conciertos por cada estación del año, eran de música clásica que fue con lo que yo crecí.

La salsa vino mucho después. Recuerdo que cuando tenía 16 años, ganamos un premio que se llama Premio Joyas, era un premio para los jóvenes, músicos de todo el mundo viajaban a Cuba todos los años por este festival.

Y CON TODAS ESTAS EXPERIENCIAS, ESA FORMACIÓN DEBIÓ SER MUY ESTABAS HACIENDO PLANES PARA EL RIGUROSA. ¿QUÉ APRENDISTE EN FUTURO? ESA ETAPA Y CÓMO EMPEZASTE A TRABAJAR PROFESIONALMENTE? Sí, honestamente tenía planes de irme a la Fue una escuela de vida. Me formé en música clásica, canto lírico y teoría, aunque también exploramos teatro y danza. Mi base es clásica -estudié mucho a Bach- y los recuerdos más bellos son tocar con la orquesta sinfónica del conservatorio.

Ya a los 16 años trabajaba con orquestas profesionales y ganamos el “Premio Joyas” en Cuba, lo que nos abrió las puertas a la televisión y a grabar con figuras como Bobby Carcassé.

Trabajé en cabarets como timbalero y acompañé a cantantes como Marielena Lasso. Todo eso antes de los 18 años, cuando me tocó enfrentar el servicio militar obligatorio.

¿CUÁL ES EL RECUERDO MÁS BONITO QUE TIENES DE ESA ETAPA DE TU VIDA?

capital, incluso de continuar los estudios superiores. Cuando me gradué, incluso seguía preparándome para mis grabaciones, mis cosas, yo seguía tocando con orquestas. Y toqué muchos estilos, eventualmente toque con una orquesta de salsa. Incluso en esa orquesta fue donde yo conocí la música de Willy Chirino por primera vez. Porque esa orquesta era del pueblo de Willy Chirino en Cuba, que es Consolación del Sur. Para mí fue una tremenda experiencia todo esto, porque yo era tan joven!

Pero en Cuba, cuando cumples 18 años, te reclutan para el servicio militar. Y yo no fui la excepción. Fui al servicio militar obligatorio.

Recuerdo que mi mamá me llamó una tarde, y me dice “Elio te acaban de dejar una carta de aquí del comité militar. Y yo le pregunto ¿y cuándo me tengo que ir? Y me dice, seis semanas.

¡Imagínate! No te puedo explicar cómo se siente eso, eso es como que se te caiga el mundo arriba.

¿CÓMO FUE ESA TRANSICIÓN DEL ESCENARIO AL SERVICIO MILITAR Y LUEGO A TU LLEGADA A EE. UU.?

Fue muy duro. Pasé los primeros 45 días en una unidad militar, luego meses de trabajo manual en el campo — hasta que me descubrieron como músico y me integraron al conjunto artístico de las Fuerzas Armadas. Montamos un show completo y salimos de gira. Salí del servicio en agosto y en noviembre de 2011 llegué a Estados Unidos.

Para mí fue bien duro, porque a pesar de que me había separado de mi casa tan temprano, nunca había salido del país y mucho menos me había separado de mis padres. Sobre todo de mi papá, me chocó mucho, porque yo siempre desde pequeño fui muy cercano a mi papá.

No tenía nada. Llegué con una bolsa plástica y lo que yo tenía puesto, sin saber hablar inglés.

A mí me recogen mis suegros en el aeropuerto.

Me llevaron a comer una pizza, y cuando yo ví una pizza tan grande, dije ¿qué?

Entonces, la cuestión de dejar a mi familia atrás, fue mucho. Se me hizo un nudo en la garganta y no pude comer.

Imagínate, esto fue un shock tremendo. En Cuba no había internet, redes sociales, celulares, allá la gente no tenía salida por un celular.

No se trata de dónde empiezas, sino de cómo te enfocas. Y Elio lo entendió desde el primer día.

Yo vine porque mi esposa es quien me trae a mí. Mi esposa y yo nos conocimos en la escuela y nos hicimos noviecitos cuando teníamos once años. Y hasta los trece estuvimos siempre de pareja. Y su mamá la pidió cuando ella tenía 13 años. Pero seguimos en contacto, y seis años después regresa a Cuba y me propone que venga para acá.

Al poco tiempo de llegar, encontró empleo en un restaurante local llamado Saboré. “Me contrataron para lavar platos y lo hice sin ningún problema”, nos cuenta. De ahí pasó a la cocina, donde aprendió de los chefs Willy, Alexis Rosario y Valero, aplicando la misma disciplina que había forjado en el conservatorio.

Yo nunca planeé, honestamente, venir a los Estados Unidos, pero el amor tocó la puerta otra vez.

Para Elio, este periodo fue fundamental para establecer sus pilares de éxito: “Consumir solo cosas que me aporten, rodearme de las personas correctas y evitar a las incorrectas.”

Su filosofía es clara: el entorno y la mentalidad determinan el alcance de tu crecimiento profesional.

Pero la cocina era sólo una parada más. Su carrera como músico y tour manager lo llevó a recorrer escenarios y ciudades, y fue en ese mundo, entre viajes, logística y exposición a los medios donde algo se fue aclarando para él: su lugar no era solo el escenario, sino todo lo que rodeaba: la comunicación y los medios. Cuando la necesidad de estar cerca de su familia en Gainesville se volvió aún más fuerte, la decisión fue fácil: establecerse y apostar por su propia emisora de radio.

DESPUÉS DE TRABAJAR EN LA COCINA, ¿CÓMO LOGRASTE RETOMAR TU CARRERA MUSICAL Y CRECER TANTO? Mientras trabajaba en la cocina, nunca perdí el enfoque. Ahorré y me compré mi propia batería para seguir practicando.

Empecé dando clases de música en Guitar Center y llegué a tener 35 estudiantes. Luego, la vida me llevó a trabajar con Arts Management Associates, donde recorrí 25 estados como baterista y tour manager. Esa etapa me dio una exposición increíble en radio y televisión nacional. Pero decidí que quería estar presente para mi familia y mis hijas, así que entre 2015 y 2016 enfoqué mi energía en la comunidad local, creando espacios de entretenimiento y proyectos de radio para fortalecer nuestras raíces latinas localmente. ¿QUÉ LES DIRÍAS A QUIENES SIENTEN QUE EL CAMINO ES DEMASIADO DIFÍCIL? Les diría que descubran lo que les gusta, que lo den todo, que den 100% buscando esa meta, ese sueño. Lo que pasa es que muchas veces te rodeas de personas que tratan de robarte tu sueño, tratan de robarte tu positividad. Rodéate de personas que te lleven ahí, que te añadan y que te sumen y no que te resten. Sigue adelante, porque no se acaba hasta que ganamos” Elio llegó sin nada, pero construyó una vida que vale todo. No fue de la noche a la mañana, ni hubo atajos en el camino. Hubo tropiezos, más de uno, pero nunca soltó lo que siempre supo: que cada etapa tiene algo que enseñarte, y que las personas y los lugares que eliges determinan hasta dónde puedes llegar.

La suya no es una historia de excepción. Es la prueba de que la mentalidad correcta lo cambia todo, y que la decisión de no rendirse puede transformar por completo el rumbo de una vida.

ola, this is the life of a 10-year-old Latina American in action.

Welcome to my world!

Mixing words, slipping accents, learning culture… that’s my life. Some people can relate, but others may ask, how do I go through my day without slipping an accent and mixing my words?

I respond by saying, who says I don’t still slip an accent here and there? If I want to be realistic, I have to tell the whole story about my day, starting in the morning.

I wake up being greeted with buenos días, which means “good morning,” and I respond with, “Where is breakfast?” I go to the table, pray in Spanish, but then pause for a word I can’t say or don’t know, and I have to say it in English.

Sometimes it gets confusing switching between languages, but I love both. I love my American side, and I love my Latina side too.

Now it’s breakfast time in my house. Mmm, mm, mmm… do you smell that? That’s the smell of fresh tequeños, arepas, and pan de bono.

It’s divine. The taste, the flavor, the feeling, all made into one scrumptious meal that no one can resist. What truly amazes me is the story behind it, the traditions behind it.

I was able to learn about my culture through food. It showed me the love my family puts into it and the care they pour into it. It was a magical experience. They always told me stories about how they carefully cook the food and make the best of what they have. And if you didn’t like the food, they would say, Yo hice esto con todo mi amor, which means “I made this with all my love.”

So whenever I see food that doesn’t smell or look its best and I refuse to eat it, it reminds me that they prepare it with love. So I would give in and try it, and sometimes I would find a new favorite food on my list.

American food is part of my life too. It tastes new and exciting. It awakens you and makes you want to eat more, even when you think you have already had more than enough.

Being a Latina American is all about the mix. I can eat all of these wonderful things, but saying in Spanish how much I like the food has not always been easy.

Hola was an easy word to say as a baby. So was mamá and papá, which mean mom and dad in Spanish. But as I grew older, I needed to speak more Spanish to communicate with my relatives.

My parents knew I needed to experience more of my Latin culture, so in 2021 my mom booked us a trip to Colombia so I could practice more Spanish.

pronounce my Rs, so whenever I saw a dog, I said, “Mira, es un pelo”, which actually means “Look, it’s a hair.” So I had to hit the books.

On hot days, we would go in the pool and play fun educational games. My tutor always made it fun to learn, and it really helped me with my Spanish. Not only did my tutor help me, but my family did too. They helped me learn more about my culture.

I remember seeing people on the street selling amazing food. I remember my grandma going up to a young man who looked about 20, selling jugo de corozo. It was and still is my favorite drink, in and out of Colombia. But the fruit used to make it is mostly found there, so I cherished every time I drank it.

I would always look around while I drank it. I liked hearing the cats purring in the street while sipping my drink, and I remember my grandma smiling every time I drank it. She would look at me to see if I liked it, and I would give her a warm hug and say, Me encanta, which means: I love it.

Dancing, singing, talking. That’s everything you need to know about my Latin culture. My family always has a smile on their face and never lets you be sad. Latin culture is unique. It shows happiness, love, and care.

It is like one big family full of love. And when you are sad, they will put on Shakira and make you dance your way into happiness.

If I could describe my culture with one word, it would not be luxurious or fancy. It would be divine, unique, and loving, more than I can fully explain. But I know this: my culture is family, and family is everything.

Of course, I already knew enough to say yes, no, please, and thank you, and a little bit more, but my parents wanted me to be able to have a full conversation.

So even though being bilingual can sometimes be confusing and different, it is also fun and full of love. Being bilingual is like having one big family that is all different, but it is home.

When we arrived in Colombia, we had a tutor who taught us Spanish. They showed us animals we didn’t know how to say, like perro, which means: dog. Because I was little, I could not

That is my life as a 10-year-old Latina American.

My family may be different, but it is my family forever.

H

ay algo que pasa cuando caminas por un market un sábado por la mañana en Gainesville y de repente te detienes frente a una pieza que te habla. Una taza de cerámica con líneas que recuerdan a unos de tus viajes o quizá a esa casa que visitaste, un collar con un diseño único que brilla y te deslumbra, un póster con una ilustración digital que mezcla raíces latinoamericanas con el lenguaje visual moderno.

No se trata de una galería de Manhattan ni en una feria internacional de arte. ¡Estás aquí, en tu pequeño Gainesville! Y detrás de cada pieza, hay un artista latino construyendo su sueño, un market a la vez.

UNA CIUDAD, UNA ESCENA Gainesville no es Miami ni Nueva York y tampoco tiene el volumen ni la infraestructura de las grandes ciudades del arte. Pero tiene algo que muchos artistas valoran más que cualquier metrópolis: una comunidad que, poco a poco, está aprendiendo a mirar, a detenerse, a comprar local y a apoyar a los negocios locales. Los markets, festivales y eventos culturales se han convertido en el escenario natural donde los artistas de esta ciudad encuentran su público, cuentan su historia y, en el mejor de los casos, viven de su pasión.

La pregunta que muchos se hacen es ¿Gainesville apoya a los artistas? Esto no tiene una respuesta simple. Pero las historias de quienes han decidido quedarse y crear aquí sugieren que sí hay espacio, aunque haya que abrirlo con las manos.

Y si algo define mi proceso y mi posición como latina, es la resiliencia: volver a intentarlo una y otra vez, aunque no salga perfecto. Siempre me ha gustado la frase de una canción de Gustavo Cerati “ sacar belleza de este caos es virtud”.

La comunidad de Gainesville apoya lo local de una forma increíble. Es gratificante tener la oportunidad de compartir lo que hago. Yo estoy infinitamente agradecida. Es difícil por los retos de abrirme camino y sostenerlo, pero al final es también creer que es posible, incluso cuando no estás segura y decides seguir adelante.

El conocimiento científico cosmológico representado en la orfebrería es todo un lenguaje descriptivo de la cultura que me continúa enriqueciendo como ser humano y artista. En ese sentido me ha dado una fuerte identidad que es tan gratificante incluso poder compartirla desde la filosofía así como el conocimiento técnico del arte.

Lo más difícil de vivir del arte, en general, es mantenerse en él y vivir decentemente siendo independiente, ya que los apoyos son escasos, si es que los hay.”
