Y comenzó la celebradera. Entre septiembre y octubre se celebró el mes de la hispanidad, resaltando las contribuciones positivas que hemos hecho a la fabricación del tejido de esta gran nación.

Entre octubre y noviembre se celebra el día de la raza y el idioma, Halloween, el Día de los Muertos y el día de todos los santos. A finales de noviembre se festeja la abundancia, la hermandad y la prosperidad en Thanksgiving y en diciembre llega la Navidad, el Janucá, el día de los inocentes y la despedida del año viejo para darle bienvenida al año nuevo.

Como dirían en mi querida Colombia ¡Se acabó el año! Y aunque apenas estamos a mediados de octubre, ya se sienten los aires navideños en el espíritu a pesar de que es un momento más propicio para merodear disfrazado, pero de aquello hablaremos más a fondo en su debido tiempo.

Sin embargo, a pesar de tanta celebración, es un tiempo en el que no hay que dejar de lado la reflexión.

Hoy por hoy vivimos en unos tiempos en los que el matoneo o bullying está por extinguirse, pero aún causa estragos tanto en niños en la escuela como en adultos en los espacios laborales. Empoderarse frente a ello es necesario para evitar caer en depresión y así mismo reconocer el valor intrínseco que uno acarrea como individuo.

gen, lo que conlleva a celebrarse como representante de una cultura que habita en nuestros poros.

Además, la diferencia de pensamiento es algo que idealmente debería fomentar el enriquecimiento perceptivo en vez de resultar en una condena fundamentada en estereotipos, por lo que es vital replantearnos como especie nuestras prioridades frente a nuestros estilos de vida y de cómo las decisiones diarias afectan no sólo al individuo quien las toma, sino a aquellos que los rodean directa e indirectamente y así mismo al medio ambiente.

Por lo tanto, este número es una invitación a reconocer la diferencia perceptiva como una oportunidad de enriquecimiento individual y grupal, una invitación a celebrar nuestro colorido cultural y, finalmente, una invitación a revisitar nuestras raíces para nutrirlas y nuestros arraigos para bien reforzarlos o replantearlos. ¡Qué viva América!

La voz que nace del amor Por Felipe Robayo Chacón Una ingesta de meconio durante un apagón energético en pleno período especial en Cuba en el ‘93 casi le arrebata al mundo la voz de Elizabeth Sánchez, pero gracias a la actitud positiva de sus padres y ella, hoy disfrutamos de su nobleza y su canto.

La infancia A las 11 p.m. del 10 de marzo de 1993, Elizabeth Sánchez comienza su labor de parto en Placetas, Cuba. A oscuras y junto a su esposo, Ricardo Sánchez, caminaron el kilómetro que los distanciaba del hospital. Al llegar, el doctor internó a Elizabeth pues ya contaba con 3 centímetros de dilatación.

A las 3 p.m. del 11 de marzo, el parto se complicó pues Elizabeth estaba rodeada de meconio, signo de la ausencia de oxígeno en su bebé. A las 7 p.m. intervienen a Elizabeth con

una cesárea para salvar a la niña.

En medio del cansancio, a Elizabeth sólo le dicen que la niña está bien, pero en realidad se encuentra a 33 kilómetros de distancia en el hospital de Santa Clara, recuperándose del nacimiento pues había sufrido tres paros respiratorios y el tejido pulmonar estaba deteriorado debido a la ingesta de meconio.

Mientras Elizabeth se recuperaba y esperaba a que le dieran de alta en la clínica, Ricardo estaba en el hospital de Santa Clara junto a su hija sin poder apartarse pues le habían advertido que la niña podía morirse en cualquier momento. Y no fue sino hasta cinco días después de nacida que Elizabeth pudo conocer a su hija en la sala Aislados 1.

La vista fue difícil de digerir. La recién nacida Elizabeth estaba verde debido a una infección generalizada en el cuerpo causada por la Klebsiella. Elizabeth hija no reaccionaba a estímulos superficiales y se le diagnosticó muerte cerebral, por lo que les recomendaron a los padres desconectarla del respirador que la mantenía viva. Pero ellos se negaron.

A los 30 días les dieron de alta del hospital y Elizabeth junto a Ricardo se marcharon a casa con una Elizabeth frágil, inactiva, sin vitalidad e inmóvil del lado izquierdo. “Yo decidí crear una serie de ejercicios para estimularla. Dos años la estimulamos diariamente, quince a veinte veces al día,” dijo

Elizabeth comenzó a caminar, hablar y a comunicarse, pero los padres dicen: “Nosotros notamos que ella estaba un poquito más atrasada que los demás niños, pero consideramos que es un milagro.”

La escuela y la crueldad infantil Al comenzar el colegio, las dificultades de aprendizaje e intelectuales de Elizabeth se hicieron más evidentes. Una profesora del jardín les dijo que era mejor que la sacaran del colegio, pues ella no iba a aprender. En el ’97, la familia se fue a República Dominicana con Ricardo y Elizabeth como misioneros de la Iglesia Cristiana Bautista.

La dificultad de aprendizaje de Elizabeth pronto la reconocieron los niños en el nuevo hogar. Lamentablemente, durante ese período Elizabeth vivió un acoso escolar sumida en el silencio, pues a pesar del diagnóstico oficial de Discapacidad Intelectual Severa, ella era lo suficientemente sensible como para no preocupar a sus padres con aquello que vivía.

Los maestros la rechazaban, los compañeros del colegio le hacían cánticos de burla y la encerraban en el baño a oscuras, la risa generalizada frente a su incapacidad de resolver un problema de aritmética que para otros era sencillo la perseguía hasta en los sueños.

Sin embargo, gracias a su actitud inquebrantable cargada con esperanza, Elizabeth no se dio por vencida. “Ella siempre estuvo muy positiva. Cosas que eran oscuras, ellas las trataba de transformar en luz. Le inculqué fortaleza y que no creyera en ningún ‘no’. Siempre estuvimos enfocados en luchar y hacer cosas. Y que, si no se lograba hacer lo que el mundo considera ‘normal,’ alguna ventaja íbamos a tener,” dijo Ricardo.

Además, Ricardo dice que Elizabeth cuenta con una capacidad impresionante para perdonar, amar, buscar la felicidad en medio de la dificultad, “Es lo que ella me ha enseñado, que se puede estar acabando el mundo, pero hay que concentrarse en lo poquito que puede haber positivo en medio de la gran dificultad, y eso hacerlo crecer.”

En el 2004, la familia Sánchez se mudó a Estados Unidos para poder brindarle a su hija mejores condiciones de vida.

Aquí encontraron que existen las oficinas de Vocational Rehabilitation del gobierno para ayudar a familias con niños con ciertos tipos de discapacidad. “La mejor forma de llegar a esas oficinas es a través de la escuela. Aunque muchas veces ni las escuelas saben.” Las oficinas brindan apoyo financiero, psicológico, educativo, laboral y hasta incentivan la creación de empresa. “Lo que estas oficinas quieren es lograr la independencia económica de los niños y jóvenes con discapacidades físicas o mentales.”

Sin embargo, a pesar de que la la familia Sánchez estaba unida y ejercía la paciencia ante criar una niña con la condición de Elizabeth, el padre confesó: “Hubo momentos de desesperación, en que parecía que todo se había acabado.

Pero con mi esposa conversamos y dijimos ‘Esta energía la tenemos que gastar en ayudar a la niña.’ Fuimos pacientes.

Entendimos sus dificultades y nunca las negamos. Así mismo reconocimos sus habilidades y nos concentramos en reforzarlas.”

Elizabeth luchó contra la muerte y venció. Pudo entrar a la universidad y graduarse a pesar de que al principio no la aceptaron y cantó en la ópera de Miami. Ahora, a sus 26 años, está dedicada a la música y abrió la fundación Nace una Esperanza para ayudarle a niños que se encuentran en situaciones similares. “Hay gente que puede estar pasando por algo cercano a lo que ella pasó y se pueden dejar vencer. Ella quiere que la gente crea que hay esperanza y que se puede vivir de otra forma. Que todo está en cómo aceptes el momento que estás viviendo. Es algo que depende de tu capacidad de entender el momento difícil y de concentrarte en que no puede aplastarte. Siempre hay una forma diferente de enfrentar las cosas para el bien de uno.”

La voz del amor Al conversar con Elizabeth, su voz es dulce con un tono suave, delicado y pausado. Su rostro sonríe con amabilidad y responde con paciencia y sinceridad. “Cuando canto siento amor, tranquilidad y felicidad. Creo que transmito felicidad a las personas que me escuchan.”

Al componer, Elizabeth se inspira en cómo ha pasado su vida y en todo lo que ha podido superar. “Así quiero que sean mis canciones, motivacionales para todo el público. Todavía no tengo un álbum, pero ya va a salir pronto al mercado uno titulado Nace una Esperanza.”

Elizabeth le canta “Al amor no correspondido por personas que no te quieren por como tú eres. Es un amor de perdón y de que te acepten. A mí el amor me sanó. Si no hubiera sido por el amor de Dios y mis padres, no habría sanado completamente. El amor sana mucho si lo haces de verdad, con el corazón.”

Elizabeth quiere que su voz anime a la gente cuando está triste, “La tristeza se va. Es un tiempo feo, pero se va. Y después viene la felicidad. Primero quererme como soy, porque si tú no te quieres a ti mismo primero, no vas a poder querer al resto de la gente. Verte tú, respetarte tú, ver que sí eres importante en este mundo y gracias a eso, si lo tienes bien calculado en tu mente y tu corazón, lo vas a poder transmitir a las demás personas.”

Elizabeth actualmente está trabajando en su álbum, y aquí nos dejó un canto a capella de su primer sencillo, Nunca dejes de amar.

E

n el mundo actual se mide mucho el carácter, el éxito y muchas capacidades por cómo Actuamos.

Sin embargo, en muchos casos encontramos adultos con carácter fuerte pero solitarios y abatidos. Otros pensándose exitosos pero enfermos y con rabias. Y algunos con muchas capacidades, pero sin ganas, actuando desde una película creada hacia afuera, tal vez por complacer, por buscar aceptación o simplemente por desconocimiento propio.

“Actuando su vida” con un guión escrito por alguien más, seguramente aprendido desde una infancia dolida pero poco cuestionada o revisada. Desde la infelicidad del discurso y no desde la alegría del “artista”.

Y tú… ¿Te has preguntado en qué película estás? ¿Eres tú el creador de tu guión y personaje principal, artístico y coherente de tu vida?

Y digo artístico porque Vivir es un Arte y como personaje principal de tu película te lo debes poder disfrutar. La Magia de Vivir está presente desde que abres tus ojos cada mañana y te atreves a continuar con la aventura.

Por lo tanto, es justamente cuando no estamos siendo coherentes con nuestro Sentir, Pensar y Actuar que vamos creando capítulos no tan placenteros.

Viviendo un día a día en piloto automático, en un deber ser o complacer.

Sintiendo Amor, Pensando en Miedo y Actuando en Complacencia. Nada coherente.

La coherencia en el actuar se logra cuando tu Sentir está conectado con tu Pensar y Actúas desde esa conexión.

Es entonces cuando puedes tener la certeza que estás tomando acciones que te llenan el corazón y te hacen vibrar, que fueron pensadas y estructuradas con cordura y sensatez y que por ende vas construyendo Tu Propia Historia, Sentida, Consciente y Presente.

Es en ese momento presente donde logras tenerte en cuenta como el protagonista de tus días, y vibras con el corazón lleno de gozo. Con la mente en responsabilidad y los actos en coherencia vas creando una historia a tu estilo.

Con los personajes que te gustan y los que te enseñan.

Con los colores, sabores y lugares que realmente te hacen feliz, pero sobre todo con la consciencia de ti, tu mundo, tu camino y decisión.

Siendo tú el agente principal de una historia que no puede ser interpretada por nadie más, pero que si no la actúas en coherencia, serás como el payaso que al final de la escena sólo quiere llorar.

Sonríe, llora, decide, actúa desde ti, para ti y contigo.

Eres con lo único que cuentas para crear la realidad que verdaderamente impactará el mundo que te rodea.

Kissimmee and Casselberry Celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month

By Felipe Robayo Chacón Down South n September 16th, the Osceola County Board of County Commissioners proclaimed September 15th through October 15th as National Hispanic Heritage Month. Commissioner Peggy Choudhry presented and read the Proclamation to the public on September 26th at the Osceola Heritage Park during an event filled with Latin American gastronomy, music, dances and paintings.

The Proclamation recognizes Hispanic Americans in the following ways:

1. We have strengthened our country and contributed to the spirit of America.

2. We have helped establish America as a place of Freedom and Opportunity.

3. We have played an important role in shaping our national character as a people of limitless possibility through hard work, love of country and deep commitment to faith and family.

4. We comprise more than 51 percent of the population in Osceola County, reflecting an enduring truth of our Nation: regardless of origins or roots, with hard work and perseverance you can make it in America.

5. We have enriched our Nation in many ways and are part of the diversity that makes America stronger.

Up North On September 28th, Casselberry celebrated its own recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month by hosting Casselberry’s Latin Jazz and Arts Fest at Lake Concord Park. The festival featured art showcases by Latin American painters within the City Hall and in the Art House, food vendors offering delicacies of Latin American cuisine at the parking lot, and music performances on the main stage in front of the lake by Gilberto ‘El Niño’ García and The Latin Jazz Knights Band, The Rico Monaco Band with invited star guest Tito Puente Jr. Both events were a recognition and celebration of the contribution we Hispanic Americans represent to our shared nation, an exaltation of the immemorable words of former Governor and Senator of New York, Herbert H. Lehman, words printed in our blue passport which we must carry in our hearts: “It is immigrants who brought to this land the skills of their hands and brains to make of it a beacon of opportunity and hope for all men.”

Día de Los Muertos: Celebrating Life by Remembering the Dead

ow that Halloween is right around the corner, I’m betting we’re going to see at least one person dressed up as a sugar skull, the Mexican inspired face makeup that transforms any fleshy face into a colorfully decorated skull.

They’ve been popular for years and I can only assume they’re even more popular now after the massive success of Pixar’s “Coco,” a film about a young boy who ventures into the Land of the Dead on Día de Los Muertos.

According to the movie, on the Day of the Dead, a bridge of cempasúchitl (Mexican marigold) unites the Land of the Living with that of the Dead so the dead can visit their loved ones for just that one day. But there’s a catch: in order to cross the bridge, a family member must display a picture of the dead one in an altar made for the occasion called ofrenda.

The movie doesn’t veer off too much from reality. The Día de Los Muertos is celebrated as a national holiday in Mexico on November 1 and 2. The first is a day to remember departed children and the second is for the departed adults.

Often associated with Halloween, the Day of the Dead takes a different look at death by not mourning it or shrouding it in sadness, but rather celebrating and remembering the deceased’s life.

Families in Mexico, where it is most popular, visit cemeteries and decorate tombstones with flowers, especially cempasúchitl. They drink and eat by their side and tell stories of the person’s life. At home, altars of all sizes are set up with things they enjoyed, like food, drinks, musical records, and even alcohol or cigarettes. Altars may also include a sweet bread called “Pan de Muerto” and sugar skulls, all decorated with china paper cut into patterns called “papel picado” and more cempasúchitl.

Origins The Day of the Dead is a mix between two worlds: The native Aztecs of modern-day Mexico and the Spanish who colonized them.

In contrast to their Spanish conquistadors, the Aztecs had a very different idea of what happened after death. While both groups assumed there would be life after death, to the Aztecs, being good or bad in life did not determine someone’s afterlife. Rather, it was the way someone died that determined how they would serve the gods.

The worst thing that could happen to an Aztec was to die of old age, or a natural death. These souls were destined a long tortuous journey of four years down the nine levels of

Mictlán, the underworld.

During their descent, these souls had to cross a river full of blood and terrifying jaguars, resist skin-slashing winds with only the blanket they were buried with as protection, avoid being crushed between two colliding mountains and somehow survive a path full of heart-eating demons, among other perils.

After the four years, the souls were welcomed by Mictlantecuhtli, the Lord of Death and King of the Underworld, and his wife and queen, Mictecacihuatl, known in popular culture as “La Catrina,” and depicted as the skeleton of a woman with a fancy dress and oversized hat.

Together, Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl ruled the underworld, guarded the bones of the dead and were a welcome sight to the souls who travelled the tortuous journey there. But while Mictlán was a relief from the hazardous journey, it wasn’t exactly rosy. It has been described as a dark and gloomy place with no windows or doors and from which there is no exit. Its ruler? Not exactly Queen Elizabeth.

Ernest L. Abel described the King of the Underworld in his “Death Gods: An Encyclopedia of the Rulers, Evil Spirits, and Geographies of the Dead”: Mictlantecuhtli had an insatiable hunger for human flesh and blood. He was a blood-splattered, partially defleshed skeleton with a menacing grin who wore a headdress with owl feathers, a necklace of human eyeballs, a human bone for an earplug, and had claws for hands in which he carried a knife or axe to remove the hearts of those he claimed.

People who died more respected deaths had nicer fates.

Warriors fallen in battle would accompany the Eastern wind to help the sun rise. Women who died during childbirth would go with the Western wind to help the sun set, while children would go to a place where a massive tree fed them milk from its branches so they could grow strong and repopulate the earth when the current race perished.

The Aztecs also believed that after some time the dead would return to the land of the living to visit, so they held a festival for the entire month of August to celebrate their arrival and to honor Mictecacihuatl.

With the arrival of the Spanish to Mexico and introduction of Catholicism, the Church sought to end any inkling of what they called paganism, as they had done often with other cultures and casually disguised the remnants for this month-long celebration as the Catholic celebration of All Saints and All Souls Day on November 2.

Slowly, as the indigenous ethos of the Aztecs effaced, it started merging with the imposed beliefs of the Church to create what is today the Day of the Dead. A mixture of a magical realism past with the stark piety of the Catholic Church.

Modern day Because the festival for the dead was an indigenous tradition, the Day of the Dead was not observed throughout all of Mexico before it was declared a national holiday and taught in schools. Still, some more conservative families choose to celebrate the more puritan version of All Souls Day, but the exoticness of what is Day of the Dead in Mexico has propelled it as one of the most unique holidays in the world.

So much so that in 2008 the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) added the Day of the Dead to their Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Depicted in movies and shows, it’s hard to escape its existence, especially while living in the United States, where more than 36 million people are Mexican or of Mexican origin. In fact, the Day of the Dead is celebrated exquisitely in California in Los Angeles since the 1970s and Santa Ana since the 2000s with parades, marketplaces and public ofrendas. In Florida, Fort Lauderdale has one of the largest Day of the Dead celebrations in the state.

In Orlando, you can celebrate the day with a themed exhibit and block party with live performances, vendors and more at CityArts Orlando on October 17 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The art exhibit will continue until November 15.

Wherever the Day of the Dead is celebrated, exorbitantly in Mexico or quietly in the home of an expat in Hamburg, Germany, the idea that remains is always the same: remembrance. The dead are not dead until they are forgotten, or so the saying goes.

This November 2, I invite you to light a candle for your departed loved ones. To remember them and tell tales of their lives to those young ones who did not know them. To lift a glass and drink to their memory, for it was thanks to them that you exist. We are nothing without our past. ¡Salud!

Empanada Valluna INGREDIENTES Relleno 1 lb. de Morrillo (Beef Chuck) 1 lb. de papa criolla (papa amarilla) 3 tallos de cebolla larga finamente picados ¼ de cebolla blanca 2 de dientes de ajo triturados 3 cucharadas de Aceite de Oliva 1 cucharadita de comino en polvo Sal y Pimienta al gusto Masa 1 lb de maíz o de harina de maíz pre-cocida 1½ cucharadita de color (azafrán o sazón goya) Caldo de carne Sal al gusto PREPARACIÓN Relleno 1. En una olla a presión, ponga el morrillo, la papa, la cebolla verde y blanca, el ajo triturado, el comino y la sal y pimienta al gusto.

2. Vierta medio litro de agua y las tres cucharadas de aceite de oliva y cocine a presión durante 1½ hora.

3. Deje salir todo el vapor y vierta el caldo en un recipiente aparte 4. Retire la carne para desmecharla con las manos o con tenedores.

5. Retire la papa y vuélvala puré.

6. Junte la carne desmechada y el puré de papa y revuelva hasta que queden unificados en una masa.

Masa 7. Cocine el maíz en el caldo que quedó en la preparación del relleno.

8. Triture el maíz cocido hasta volverlo una masa.

9. Vierta el maíz (o la harina pre-cocida) en agua caliente junto al color, un poco de aceite y sal al gusto.

10. Amase hasta que quede suave y no se pegue a las manos.

11. Envuelva la masa con una tela (plástico o papel también funciona, pero es menos ecológico) y déjela reposar por 15 minutos.

Armado 12. Tome un puñado de masa y aplánelo como una arepa sobre un papel plástico aceitado.

13. Ponga el relleno en la mitad de la masa aplanada.

14. Doble el círculo a la mitad ayudándose con el papel plástico y con una taza recorte los bordes sin relleno, dejando la famosa forma de media luna.

15. Repita el proceso hasta agotar la masa y el relleno.

Las empanadas, en esencia, son un pastel relleno y existen en muchas cocinas del mundo donde adquieren variadas formas con diversos ingredientes.

En Colombia, las empanadas varían según la región: la de pipián en el Cauca va rellena con huevo y papa, la costeña lleva queso, la santandereana tiene arroz y huevo, y la valluna lleva un guiso de res con papa amarilla.

La variedad de las empanadas en Colombia es igual de variopinta que su historia. Según el finado Kendon Macdonald, chef y gastrónomo escocés que vivió en Colombia la mayor parte de su vida, la empanada proviene de Arabia y se mezcló con la gastronomía española durante los años de ocupación mora en la península Ibérica.

Cuando llegó la conquista española a América, la versión adaptada de los españoles cayó en manos de los afrocolombianos quienes, según Macdonald, la empezaron a freír, contribuyéndole ese “crack” distintivo entre los dientes de la masa de maíz que usaban los indígenas.

Las empanadas en Colombia son un snack sin ánimo discriminatorio, ya que desde el presidente de la nación hasta el guachimán de la cuadra las disfrutan por igual.

En Cali se gozan a la caída de la tarde, los sábados en familia, en la madrugada después de rumbear con amigos y desconocidos, como media mañana en la oficina, en cumpleaños, aniversarios, bautizos, novenas navideñas, eventos ejecutivos, cocteles elegantes y hasta en funerales.

Y si te encuentras una empanada mal parqueada donde sea y cuando sea: ¡Buen provecho!

Freír y servir 16. Caliente suficiente aceite de maíz (o el que le guste para freír) a más o menos 350ºF o 180ºC para sumergir las empanadas.

17. Déjelas entre 5-7 minutos o hasta que estén doradas 18. Sáquelas y déjelas escurrir en un plato cubierto con papel cocina.

19. Sírvalas calientes.

20. Repita hasta que no queden empanadas.

Humanity and Climate Change n the past four decades there have been a variety of scientific, governmental, non-profit and private researches on the impact humans have had on the environment within the last century. The findings are both saddening yet practical, for they establish a new need: compromise and responsibility to take action regarding climate change in order to safeguard earth for future generations.

The U.S. Naval War College started studying climate change in the late 1980’s and alongside think tanks, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Intelligence Community, the U.S. NAVY, the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Department of Defense, The White House, the Pentagon, the CNA Military Advisory Board, the CIA, the Air Force, the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Research Council representing the U.S. National Academies have agreed on one thing: human-triggered climate change is a reality and immediate action is necessary.

Unfortunately, there isn’t an agreement as to what type of action must follow. For example, for the U.S. Department of Defense, the route is to have the U.S. Military Forces prepare for the new climactic contingencies in order to preserve national security. Whereas environmental activists around the globe demand stopping fossil fuel burning as the main source for energy production.

Dr. Peter H. Gleick, an eminence in Energy and Resources and current President Emeritus of the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment, and Security in Oakland, California, said to the United States Congress Committee on Government Reform in May 2006 regarding possible repercussions of climate change: “Five critical areas stand out as important examples of national vulnerabilities with security implications: agricultural productivity, the availability and quality of freshwater resources, access to strategic minerals, rising sea level, and the deterioration of political relationships with other countries that result from disagreements about international climate policy.”

This is happening today at both the Arctic and the Antarctic, since the regions are abundant in resources such as oil, natural gas, minerals, fish and water, and world powers such as U.S.A., Russia and China are already establishing base in the poles in order to secure trade routes and recognize potential exploitation grounds. According to a strategy report prepared by the U.S. Coast Guard in May 2013, “Climate-change impacts in Alaska are already apparent, including earlier spring snowmelt, reduced sea ice, widespread glacier retreat, warmer permafrost, drier landscapes, and more extensive insect outbreaks and wildfires.” Furthermore, they point out competition “will challenge norms of safety, security, and environmental sustainability throughout the region.”

Yet, we hear leaders of different nations publicly denying this crude, stressful and anguishing reality of climate change to the verge of mockery. It is both disheartening and worrisome.

Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, denied the shared heritage of the Amazon as the world’s lungs during the annual debate in the UN General Assembly denouncing it was a wrongly pop-

ularized international fallacy which infringed Brazilian sovereignty. He also asserted international media was lying about fire consuming the Amazon, even though images of the fire eating the forest spread all over the world.

Russian president Vladimir Putin undermined Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg’s knowledge and understanding of worldwide priorities by saying “No one has explained to Greta that the modern world is complex and different and… people in Africa or in many Asian countries want to live at the same wealth level as in Sweden.”

U.S. president Donald Trump announced on June 1, 2017 the withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, a treaty signed by 195 nations worldwide excepting Syria and Nicaragua in December 2015. The treaty seeks to avoid an increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7ºF) above preindustrial levels, because scientists have warned such an increase could result in an irreversible and catastrophic domino effect of climate extremes such as superstorms, drought and heat waves.

Sadly, these presidential actions become a model for citizens who prefer to believe unsubstantiated claims instead of researching and informing themselves with scientific evidence and conclusions. Furthermore, they adopt the same attitude and troll any environmentally friendly action, condemning it of alarmist, exaggerated and inconclusive, and even more dangerously, confusing it with communism or socialism, which gives them moral grounds to demonize any demonstration of concern regarding climate change.

However, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel stated in a speech delivered at the Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas held in Arequipa, Peru, on October 13, 2014, “Climate change is a threat multiplier. It has the potential to exacerbate many of the challenges we already confront today – from infectious disease to armed insurgencies.” The 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review of the Department of Defense reinforces this statement by saying “The pressures caused by climate change will influence resource competition while placing additional burdens on economies, societies, and governance institutions around the world. These effects are threat multipliers that will aggravate stressors abroad such as poverty, environmental degradation, political instability, and social tensions – conditions that can enable terrorist activity and other forms of violence.”

Finally, the Department of Defense stated in a report to congress in July 23, 2015 “The reality of climate change is an urgent and growing threat to our national security, contributing to increased natural disasters, refugee flows, and conflicts over basic resources such as food and water. These impacts are already occurring, and the scope, scale, and intensity of these impacts are projected to increase over time.”

A little on Facts The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change. They disclose their findings to the general public at www.ipcc.ch/reports, so as citizens of the world we can be informed about the latest understandings of what is happening with our planet’s climate and observe a multiplicity of possible scenarios depending on what type of action we take.

According to Special Report Global Warming of 1.5ºC published in 2018, failure to limit an increase in global average temperature to 1.5ºC was likely to result in fires, floods and famines between the years 2030 and 2052. This temperature shift is directly related to a carbon budget which currently stands at approximately 400 million tons while current emissions stand at 42 million tons per year. In this sense, the budget could be reached within roughly eight years, yet there are factors such as permafrost thawing and wetland methane emissions which could accelerate this process.

In other words, there is an absence of an exact figure and exact expiration date, but there is general consensus on one thing: regardless the scenario, the greenhouse gases budget is coming to dangerous levels which will result in unpredictable climate hazards putting at risk human continuity on earth.

In the words of former Director of National Intelligence, Daniel R. Coats, who resigned in July 28, 2019 “Global environmental and ecological degradation, as well as climate change, are likely to fuel competition for resources, economic distress, and social discontent through 2019 and beyond. Climate hazards such as extreme weather, higher temperatures, droughts, floods, wildfires, storms, sea level rise, soil degradation, and acidifying oceans are intensifying, threatening infrastructure, health, and water and food security. Irreversible damage to ecosystems and habitats will undermine the economic benefits they provide, worsened by air, soil, water, and marine pollution.”

— Greta Thunberg | The Daily Show Unfortunately, it’s not just a set of alarmist kids who should be in school who point out the nefarious consequences of unregulated markets which benefit private pockets over worldwide stomachs and safety.

As a matter of fact, it is kids who are projecting themselves towards the future and foresee dire living conditions in which they prefer not to live in, especially when they weren’t the ones who made the executive decisions which will lead them to such conditions.

The main characters at the moment are 16-year-old Swedish Greta Thunberg, who started school striking for the climate in front of the Swedish Parliament. She has become the spear head of a youth global strike movement for climate protection called #FridaysForFuture, which invites kids all around the world to demand environmental policy change from national elected leaders. On September 20, 2019, about 4 million people in 161 countries marched to protest against climate change inaction.

15-year-old Canadian Autumn Peltier, Wikwemikong water warrior, is an advocate for the preservation of water and on March 22, 2019 she addressed world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on World Water Day proposing to treat water as “Human with human rights. Our water is alive. We all have a right to this water as we need it. No child should grow up not knowing what clean water is. It’s time to warrior up and empower each other to sustain the little we have

This superficial journey on climate change has been a quest to further understand what is known, what is happening, what is being done and what is not being done. Science, national intelligence and international committees all agree in climate change being a reality, yet mainstream media coverage is regretfully sub-covering the topic and failing to point out the importance of the situation.

It is through social media, alternative streaming channels and the internet that a sturdy global movement has gained force and consolidated into a massive outcry for reform. Condescending remarks towards youth coming from the elder generations is a sign of ignorant arrogance, a dangerous combination which breeds dogmatic stubbornness and can lead to intergenerational conflict, which is the opposite of what we need right now as a species.

Therefore, the wisest move anyone can make at the moment is to critically inform themselves and take a stance based on reason more so than on emotion. It’s comprehensible that our parents and grandparents can feel belittled by the youth calling them out on their own mistakes, but there is nothing wrong with being wrong, the dangerous problem is to be wrong and unquestionably believe you’re right.

She wrote for malala.org in December 19, 2018 “We [the upcoming generation] had no power in creating the systems that are destroying our world and futures — and yet we are and will be paying the biggest price for the older generations’ recklessness.”

At a hyperlocal scale, 33-year-old Kevin marched alone around the pier at Lake Eola in Orlando amidst eyes which looked at him as a rare bug on September 27, 2019. Kevin eloquently stated “It’s important to stress structural change rather than putting the onus on individuals who are just working all day. They can’t impoverish themselves in order to save the environment, the change needs to be structural. However, anytime the system change happens, it starts with people in the grassroots, doing small things, whatever they can: take public transportation, eat less beef, do whatever you can, things will get better when you take action and then hope will be everywhere.”

Finally, the U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th congressional district, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, known as AOC, has gained international recognition as one of the primary promoters of the Green New Deal (GND), which proposes “Preserving our planet with a just transition focused on economic opportunity: jobs and justice, peace and prosperity.” AOC addressed the C40 World Mayors Summit held in Copenhagen on October 9th to 12th and said “Climate change is not a coincidence or a scientific anomaly, climate change is a consequence of our unsustainable way of life, centered on prioritizing personal gain and profit over any and all human and planetary considerations.” She emphasized the need to transition towards a new form of industry “should not be daunting, intimidating or lead us to despair. It should be inspiring.”
