love this time of year in the garden city – misty mornings with beautiful sunrises, long golden evenings and brisk clear nights. Life feels a little more settled in autumn. It’s a time to slow down, take stock, and really begin to appreciate the good things we have. That’s exactly what we’ve been doing – looking around at our unfolding city and acknowledging the amazing places, people and prospects we have. Whether it’s talented and passionate musicians, clever and careful healthcare providers, brilliant business developers and leaders or tastefully talented gourmands, we have a world of potential right on our doorstep.

My challenge to you, Cityscapers, is to get off your back end and enjoy it … all of it.

I’ve given myself the difficult task of having at least a glass of wine in every single central city establishment over the next three months, and I dare you to join me. I’ll be ticking them off online so you can follow my journey, but better still, come with me! Get off your screen and on your feet and be an explorer. Who knows what magic we might find?

YARD FOOD CONCERT

A boutique eatery in the heart of the South Frame is the latest project from developers Box 112 to open. The Yard, at 173 St Asaph Street, houses eight artisan food producers in a large hall that was once home to bookbinders McHargs.

EMERGING TALENT Millie Pux-Askew, winner of the Ballantynes Emerging Designer competition from last year’s Fashion Week, has produced a collection that is ‘natural, creative’ and very now.

really, and got the project together two weeks before it was due.”

Since then, the biggest challenge has been managing the many other people involved in taking a collection to market. “When you do things on a bigger scale there are a lot more people involved and there’s a lot of multi-tasking to make sure things arrive on time,” the young designer says.

Running through all her designs is a solid thread of sustainability and ethical practices. “I think it’s really important to consider how things are made and where they’re coming from. I source hand-made cottons from India that are

hand-loomed and naturally dyed – or not dyed at all. It’s a really slow way of making because it can take one or two months to weave the fabric, but it becomes a product that no-one else has, which gives it a real value and its own life.”

After the Ballantynes stint, Pux-Askew will be back to the sewing machine. “I’ve just got some new fabric that is arriving from India and being delivered so I’ll be straight back into it.”

The cool cats at Slingshot have teamed up with four well-known Kiwis – Megan Annear, Jason Gunn, Melanie Bracewell and Sir Tim Shadbolt – to bring us four modem options, each with their own unique design. We’re especially partial to Jason Gunn’s design.

Slingshot will donate profits to each of the celebrity’s nominated charity – Gunn’s charity of choice is Cholmondeley Children’s Centre.

ince winning the coveted title, the young designer has had “a pretty crazy couple of months” of sewing and learning, learning and sewing that has culminated in the launch of her own collection for Ballantynes Contemporary Lounge and online.

The Millie Askew collection is “rural, retro, farmer”, says its creator. Like all her designs, it draws inspiration from the people around her. “I might see something a friend is wearing and take parts of that, or get inspired by their creative practices. My designs start with a bit of a feeling or a mood develops, taking bits of things from everyday life and talking to people.”

Pux-Askew certainly didn’t expect to win when she entered the Ballantynes Emerging Designer competition. “I entered on a whim,

Tell us more about the families behind the gallery – who are they, how did it come about? There are five Christchurch families behind the Gallery – all wishing to see a sustainable commercial gallery for contemporary art established within the new city centre. And although the Arts Centre is a gem of an historical precinct, the graceful context of the old University library is a pretty good one for contemporary NZ art. What exciting exhibitions are coming?

Anything you can tease us with?

Exciting exhibitions in the coming months include solo shows by much loved Christchurch sculptors Neil Dawson and Bing Dawe, with local printmaker Fiona van Oyen and celebrated artist John Pule sharing the space between – both presenting vibrant new flora-based work. A good example of what Fiona van Oyen is exhibiting is her work 'Floating'. Local upcoming artists to keep an eye on? Simon

Christchurch’s The Central Art Gallery has been displaying beautiful pieces for two years, thanks to some dedicated art-loving Cantabrians.

Edwards – with his subtle variations on local land, sea and skyscapes – is making wonderful work currently. We are excited to announce a small catalogue, a publication around his exhibition of new painting late this year. What sort of art should a beginner investor be looking at? They should come in and enjoy browsing the racks and the works-on-paper

drawers here at The Central. They should just make a little time to scope an exhibition or two here at the Gallery, and chat with Lisa or Laura, the Gallery team. Talking about artworks, about what you see and what you feel, will make decisions about potential purchase a lot easier, and a lot more fun.

Do you have a favourite piece of public art in the city at the moment? What is it and why? My favourite public work in the city has not yet been re-installed post-quake. Neil Dawson’s 'Echo' was the piece suspended in the sky above the North Quad of the Arts Centre – first commissioned way back in 1984. It’d be great to see it back up again! Congratulations on the galleries first two years - what does the next two years look like for the gallery? More of the same for us: presenting handsome looking shows; supporting artists with commerce; and making those exhibitions come to life for the myriad folk who make the effort to come into the Arts Centre and scope them! thecentral.co.nz

Cityscape caught up with local songstress Theia to talk inspiration, her upcoming EP Not Your Princess and working with Mike Elizondo.

We’re loving your track ‘Not Your Princess’. What was the inspo behind that? It’s a sassy song – a declaration of independence. It came about when I was in Sydney late last year and feeling really inspired from working with new people. After a pretty full on and challenging year, it was just really liberating to feel that sense of freedom. You wrote ‘Bye Bye’ with the legendary Mike Elizondo (whose résumé includes working with the likes of Eminem and Dr Dre), and other top-notch musos – what was that experience like and did you have any fan girl moments? Mike is the kindest guy and so talented. I loved working with him. We just got stuck in and wrote ‘Bye Bye’ in a day.

A few months later, I was in LA and he invited me to his studio, which was once the studio where The Jacksons recorded and what was then Death Row Records. I suppose I had a fan girl moment when we were in the studio soaking in all the history and looking at all of Mike’s gold records on the walls. Where has been your favourite city to perform? I played a show in LA once, at a venue on the Sunset Strip, and that was pretty special because I love LA and it’s always been my dream to live there, which I still intend to do. I was rehearsing for the show and I met the members of The Cult, who were rehearsing in an adjoining room. Then at soundcheck, the Foo Fighters were recording next door! You're a traveller – what brought you home to Christchurch? My contract in China came to an end and it was time to come back to family and friends. What do you miss about travelling? I miss the adventure, getting up every day and not knowing what you will see or discover. I enjoyed my three years living in Asia as it was so different to the Western culture.

And of course I miss the great people that you meet along the way. What's the best thing about a Christchurch autumn? It would have to be the colours. It’s such a stunning time of the year and generally the weather is a bit calmer. You're deep into your bikes – what's the best thing about cycling in Christchurch?

Reboot As the city grows and develops, there’s a tangible nod to our history informing our future.

Not just locally either – it’s crossing all boundaries. Everything old is new again. We’re in the midst of a total 80s and 90s rewind – music, fashion, styling, television, movies.

You’ll be wearing legwarmers and lycra at the gym before too long and think it’s normal.

Cassette tapes are making a comeback – cassette sales rose 36 percent in 2017 and 23 percent last year. Remember the pain of having to time hitting ‘record’ to tape your favourite song off the radio?

And heaven help us if the DJ came in early at the end (and didn’t he always?).

Cassettes aren’t alone.

Vinyl has been slowly and steadily making its way back to the hi-fidelity system in the corner. We were stoked to see vinyl being given the treatment it deserves by the

likes of Arctic Monkeys (top vinyl album in the UK for 2018) but you can’t beat the classics. Fleetwood Mac on a turntable? Yes please!

While we’re talking classics, is there any legend of the 80s that hasn’t been through town? Phil Collins, Slayer and Anthrax and Bryan Adams, and we’re waiting on Fleetwood Mac and Elton John.

There are plenty of things coming back that fill us with dread – multi-coloured eye shadow, feathers on everything, unforgiving metallic skirts and tops – but there are some gems that we can’t wait to embrace again. And, sadly, some things that we’d take back in a heartbeat but aren’t even on the same planet, much less the horizon.

In the spirit of staying ahead of the curve of all things new and old, we’ve pulled our top picks for the resurgence, dug those lace gloves out of the bottom drawer, pulled our scrunchy tight and doubled down on the denim.

A SMOOTH TRANSITION Jumpsuits were big last year and they’re not going anywhere soon. Spice up a retro fave with this RUBY Zadie Pantsuit.

MINI’S MAXIM MINI, of course, never went out of fashion. This year there will be

The Melbourne-esque nooks and crannies of Christchurch are rapidly becoming an explorer’s paradise.

S

izzling style, tiny treasures, mystical make-overs and classy culinary creations lie in wait around every corner. So don your best Dr Livingstone pith helmet and get out and explore the wilds of the inner city. You won’t need to tie a string to a pole to find your way out … you may not actually want to come out again!

The best way to navigate the central city is by foot – find your ‘sole mate’ at one of the many great boot-iques. Sure, you can climb aboard a Lime, but there’s a lot to miss if you whizz by at 25kph.

If you haven’t swung by Christchurch institution Ballantynes for a while, it’s worth a good nosey around – it’s not the Ballys your Nana knew (well, not all of it. Nana will still be quite happy in the hallowed halls).

Tucked away behind Ballys, you’ll find some of the funky new laneways that are turning the city into an adventure of discovery.

Plymouth Lane is already home to the gorgeous Sweet Soul Patisserie and is the link between the city’s favourite department store and the river, providing access to what will

be the brand spanking new Riverside development. Riverside Lanes and Riverside Market are set to burst into life and will see an undercover, seven-day-a-week farmers' market trading in local meat, seafood, produce, baked goods and more, with food outlets, retail stores, rooftop bars and restaurants locked in.

The Terrace has cemented itself as a hospo hotspot with its culinary and nightlife destinations, however the weaving laneways which have sprouted in and around the block are worthy of a meander too. The continuing development of these laneways means ease of travel from one hub to the next, and with a path linking to the BNZ Centre you can discover an array of treasures in the colourful and comfortable courtyard, fab food outlets and arguably one of the best bookstores in the country, Scorpio Books. A meeting place for the business and cultural community, the central spot gives Britomart a run for its money with the space occupied by casual seating, colourful signposts and boxed planters dotted throughout.

with The Yard – a super styly office, retail and hospo space that sits alongside other new and restored heritage buildings. The South Frame is set to become the place for getting together, checking out markets, finding a feed or chillaxing with mates.

South of the South Frame is one of the most exciting developments currently in the works. The Welder development on Welles Street – big ups again to the lads from Box 112 – is shaping up to be a thriving hub filled to the brim with an array of diverse and exciting projects from vegan eateries to fashion-forward boutiques dominating the space.

One of the original great laneways of the city, New Regent Street is a feast for more than just

combination of Te Pae and the Town Hall brings a return of world class entertainment and conventions to the centre of the city. Want a good look at just how construction is going on Te Pae? Head up to the top floor of Tūranga for the best view in town.

Kettlewell Lane tips its hat to Maurice Carter – previous patriarch of the Carter Group who initially developed the site; Market Lane is a nod to the early trade and commercial activities crucial to the development of the city and Addison Lane is branded as the ‘service lane’.

The SALT District is a punch of sass and grit, home to funky cafes, gorgeous bars, and a plethora of places to eat thanks in no small part to Little High. Taking its title from nearby streets St Asaph, Lichfield and Tuam, the name took hold as it relates to “the ideas of flavour, preservation, effectiveness and dependabilities.”

Within the SALT District is Lichfield Courtyard, a collective of eateries encompassed by some seriously impressive and funky murals.

From the river all the way down to Little High is the South Frame, linking the Health, Justice, Retail and Innovation precincts. THE THREE MARKET-EERS

Riverside Market, the development rapidly taking shape on the banks of the Avon by the Bridge of Remembrance, promises to be a real jewel in the central city crown.

But unlike some of the city’s pioneering post-quake projects, it won’t be an oasis in a desert of demolition and construction sites.

That’s because it will be plugged into a network of laneways – some already buzzing with life, others more embryonic – that over time will revive central Christchurch as a fantastic place to live, work and play.

Riverside Market, tapped to open in August, will house a seven-day-a-week indoor farmers’ market, boutique shopping and space for events, festivals and music.

Providing a reliable source of fresh, organic, locally grown food, Riverside will be a community of local independent traders, showcasing the best food producers and creators in our city and region.

The development’s market square is a grand space, with a mezzanine floor hosting restaurants, a bar and a cooking school. The plan to have students at the school source their ingredients from the market below typifies the dedication to community and a

shared experience for business owners and shoppers alike. An eye on sustainability and waste minimisation will keep the conscience cool, and recycled rimu inside and recycled red bricks outside keep the development rustic and authentic.

Some tenancies are still up for grabs but a focus on community and support for small business means leases are very attractive so don’t expect them to remain vacant for long.

Twenty smaller retail spaces in the Riverside Lanes, the spaces around the market, will frame specialist retailers Hugo Boss, Sergios, Cosmic, Bourbon Rose, Alchemy Equipment, Manscape and Otautahi Tattoo. Exteriors also sport a mix of cladding, including recycled red brick, Oamaru stone and cement ‘weatherboards’.

The Riverside development also connects to the Guthrey Centre, another laneway-styled revival that includes Vodafone, Moochi Heights, Mi Piaci and Nespresso among its tenants.

The force behind Riverside Market and Lanes, also the laneway developments coming together behind the historic facades of the Mackenzie & Willis building at 181 High Street and the nearby Duncan’s Buildings, is a consortium of Christchurch property investors and developers that includes Richard Peebles, Kris Inglis and Mike Percasky.

The Mackenzie & Willis and Duncan’s Buildings projects bring the challenge of retaining the old facades and integrating them into modern spaces behind, whereas the Riverside Market will realise a dream to give Christchurch a world-class inner-city food and produce market that rivals those in Europe, the US and across the ditch in Australia. “We really want to create something amazing for the city that people will feel a real connection to,” they say.

Elsewhere in the CBD the trio love Little High Lane, around Little High Eatery. “[There’s a] great vibe and energy, amazing retail and food, plus easy access from the lanes or car park”. Mike also mentions the Boxed Quarter on St Asaph: “It is such an interesting concept for a building and not something you will find anywhere else in the country. It houses such an eclectic mix of tenants including amazing food offerings, retail, office workers, Airbnb rooms and is also home to RDU. It’s a great example of true mixed use.”

Mike also loves the way the SALT District (the area around St Asaph, Lichfield and Tuam streets) is developing. “It is organically evolving down the same line as the pre-earthquake High Street/Poplar Lane area. It is gritty and interesting. It’s great that there is a little corner in the new CBD where alternative retailers can feel at home. I feel that this area could become a real community, which is so important in modern cities.”

The three developers see both challenges and opportunities in the laneways and the spaces around them. By definition, laneways are hidden from passing traffic, which means people need to seek them out. But with that comes the thrill of discovery, of finding “a new, cool, interesting place that is tucked into a laneway. Once people find these special places they will want to come back, and also spread the word how unique and cool these places are,” the developers say.

With so much going on, it amazes Mike that some locals still haven’t made it back into the CBD yet after the earthquakes.

“Thousands of people have worked so hard over the past eight years and have turned a pile of rubble into one of the coolest cities,” he says. “Every day something new opens up.

All we need now is for locals to embrace their new city and to start using it on a daily basis.”

For now the trio are deep in their projects but have they given any thought to how their work will be remembered in 100 years?

“Hopefully people will be celebrating the centennial of the Riverside Market and saying: ‘It’s brilliant how that market has an energy and vibrancy that is as good as anywhere else in the world and has stood the test of time’. Also the historic facades at Mackenzie & Willis and the Duncan’s Buildings, which are now 100 years old, will then be 200 years old and someone might just say: ‘What a great idea to save and restore them – who did that again?’”

Little High lanes inside the Mackenzie & Willis building offer an intimate retail setting leading into the popular Little High eatery. Dual Denim and Not Without You are some of the new players on the scene, while WORLD on Tuam Street brings high-end fashion to the central city. What does the future of the inner city look like?

It’s so exciting to have finished street corners and laneways filled with pedestrians exploring their new city centre. A focus on foot traffic and cycling, as well as plenty of car parking, will make ours an accessible city. Walking between city blocks through laneways will be the way to get around, with our trademark trees giving our CBD its lush garden feel.

laneways are a discovery mission – don’t expect to be able to see everything in one visit! city. I was in Melbourne recently and checked out the street art in their laneways. The quality of our street art is, in my opinion, of a much higher standard in every way.

Of all the laneways and spaces within the central city, which is your favourite? The BNZ Centre's Cashel Square has started to become quite vibrant with all the bean bags and people hanging out. I also think the laneways around Poplar/Ash streets are very cool.

The recent reopening of our beloved Town Hall has given the city a great boost. Not to be forgotten, however, is just how much work it took to get it done.

Project Story’s Olivia SpencerBower says the companies that

worked on the Town Hall project should be proud of what they have achieved, “and we are proud to be able to share their stories”.

Olivia’s images capture what is unseen and sometimes forgotten; that it takes real people to achieve outstanding results.

“At the moment we are celebrating the end result of construction – as we should be,” says Olivia. “But one day, when

people begin to take for granted what they can see, they will start to become curious about what they can't see.

“What did it look like midproject? Who were the people that built it? Project Story captures images that answer all of these questions. Our images are part of a community's past, present and future. They are timeless, and maybe one day even iconic.”

Project Story’s Olivia SpencerBower (above) spent the last four years documenting the rebuild of one of the city’s greatest icons, the Town Hall. Cityscape caught up with Olivia between assignments and discovered the meaning behind the mission that was capturing the rebuild.

How did the opportunity to photograph the Town Hall development come about? I had previously photographed the Christchurch Blood Centre for Hawkins and they approached me to present a proposal to them on what I could do to record the progress of the Town Hall. Did you go into the Town Hall project blind or did you have a good idea of what you were going to capture? I came from a country school in North Canterbury then went to school at Rangi Ruru, so the Town Hall was part of my childhood growing up. I remember visiting for Cantamath competitions at primary school, school balls and prizegivings with Rangi and even Coast to Coast prizegivings once I’d left school. It’s been a prominent feature in so many Cantabrian’s lives. Because of this I knew the building and how important it was to our city. I knew I

wanted to photograph what we saw in front of us, but also the little details many people don’t notice. I wanted to focus on the human interest stories too; the Town Hall was built by many, many people’s minds and hands, not robots. These people matter in the story. My inspiration for photographing these projects is the iconic 1930s New York construction photos. Think: the classic NY photo of the men eating lunch on the steel beam.

That’s my end goal, images that are as powerful as that and have the longevity to last much longer than the rest of us. And I wanted to capture images that showcase my client’s exceptional work. The images not only document the project, they’re art in themselves.

How much time have you invested in this project (roughly, obviously!)? During the project I would visit every month and spend around half a day onsite capturing the progress. We’re up to month 40 so far, so that’s at least 40 visits, but there have been additional ones for various extra events.

Plus lots of post-production time!

Nothing is posed in my photographs, I document what I see. I like to look for unique angles, slices of light, interesting compositions. The workers onsite soon got used to me loitering around watching them as they did their thing. The exhibition was a mammoth undertaking and I’ve been working on it solidly since the beginning of January. With over 3000 edited photos in my catalogue, figuring out how to tell the story was a task in itself. What were some unique challenges for this project? Figuring out how to navigate around site each month!!

The progress was vast, so the safe routes around were always changing! What’s your lasting impression of the project? I’m so lucky and proud that I got the opportunity to tell this story. It’s a story that needed to be told to ensure the public understood just what went on behind the

Because all the work was taking place inside, and you couldn’t see a building taking shape from the ground up like you would a new one it was so important to capture this story and share it. It’s amazing to see the building back to its former glory, but even more fancy with a few new modern additions that will ensure it serves our community well into the future. Getting to sit in the finished Auditorium in utter silence is an experience in itself.

And comparing how it looks in its finished state to what it was like when they were doing the jet grouting inside is quite the contrast! There’s obviously a massive amount of responsibility to capture this for future generations – are you happy with how you’ve managed to do that?

Yes, I’m stoked with how it all turned out. It was amazing to hear all the responses to the photographs at the opening.

People really enjoyed getting to see what was required to bring the project together. Right from the beginning I had envisioned an exhibition, and as it proved following the opening this was an important part of sharing the story.

I’m looking forward to designing a photobook during the year, to be released at the end of the year so that people can have the story in their own homes and for many generations to come. Are there other Christchurch icons you’d either like to photograph progress of or wish you had? I would love to document the Christchurch Cathedral conservation project. It’s another iconic building in Christchurch with a rich heritage and an incredible story that deserves to be told and shared.

What other projects have you got on the go? I’m still photographing the Town Hall as it still isn’t fully completed in certain areas, and I’ll start working on the book in March, along with some smaller projects that I’m working away on. projectstory.co.nz

The first Kiwi to play in the Vienna Philharmonic, Benjamin Morrison returns home to join the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in May. We pose a few questions ...

hat sparked your passion to play the violin? Two experiences stand out to me: the first when I was 10 years old. I had the opportunity to perform Albinoni's Adagio with orchestra and Robert Tait conducting. During the performance I felt a powerful desire to share the passion and emotions within the piece with the audience.

The second was at 13 years old when I discovered the joy of chamber music and playing music together. I was a first-year student at Burnside High School and was put into an octet with seven other members all older and more experienced than I was. Seeing

how much fun and love they had for music really inspired me and ignited my passion for being a part of a larger whole. Being appointed to the Vienna Philharmonic’s (renowned as one of the world’s finest orchestras) 1st violin section is an amazing feat. How did you feel knowing that you

were the first Kiwi to achieve that? Although the reason I'm the only Kiwi in the orchestra could be put down to fairly mundane statistical reasons, I feel a sense of pride in knowing that Kiwis can punch above their weight. New Zealand provides many opportunities and has a very active cultural scene. I would love to see kids have the opportunity to be able to express themselves creatively and learn that the creative process also requires discipline and hard work. My first experience in the orchestra was remarkably unspectacular. During the rehearsals, the colleagues seemed quite reticent and calm.

The performance was a completely different world, with every member giving it their all. The fearlessness and abandon with which the orchestra plays still inspires me to this day. Who is your favourite

composer and what is your go-to classical piece to perform? It's quite tricky to pick just one composer out of the many genres, ages and styles. I love Bach for retrospection and solitude; Shostakovich for evil, despair and catharsis; Puccini for love, passion and melodrama; and Michael Jackson for dance, energy and groove. I guess the go-to piece would be the ones I'm currently working on: Korngold's Violin Concerto, Shostakovich's 8th Quartet and a New York tour with Beethoven's 3rd Symphony. You’ve toured and performed globally.

Where would you say has been your favourite location to perform? Japan always has a special place in my heart. The Japanese are avid classical music lovers. This fact, coupled with their impeccable manners, makes for quite an atmosphere at concerts.

Before the concert begins the audience is deadly silent, eagerly awaiting the performance. Their concert halls are fantastic, acoustically as well as aesthetically – their acoustics rival the best European halls. New York's Carnegie Hall is also a favourite; the buzz of New York is irreplaceable.

If you weren’t a violinist, what would be your next instrument of choice? I've always been jealous of the pianist's choice of repertoire.

The most surreal moment in your career? I recently auditioned for the concertmaster position in my orchestra and was fortunate to make it to the finals, which take place in the Vienna State Opera, playing solo with the Vienna Philharmonic. I felt overwhelmed and humbled at the opportunity to be able to make music in such a way with the orchestra and have a strong feeling of my colleagues' support. It was a surreal experience performing as a soloist with the orchestra I've been a tutti member of for so long. What advice would you give to budding violinists or those wanting to pursue a musical career? Stay open to all forms of

art, explore the music you have a passion for, find inspiration in the creativity of others and events in your life. Music encompasses all emotion and you may dazzle audiences with technical pyrotechnics but with musicality you'll win their hearts. Learn to be critical of your playing and listen carefully to yourself, finding the most efficient way to improve.

Don't be afraid to take risks; risk the nervosity of walking onto the stage and you may find you enjoy the exhilarating feeling of sharing music with people. On Sundays, you’ll find me… Grabbing a coffee from down the road, cleaning my apartment, and occasionally a morning concert or an opera performance at 6:30pm. A successful musical journey is never a solo. Who has helped you along the way? I'm very grateful for the professional coaching Vesa-Matti Leppänen gave me while I was studying at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington. I remember Vesa giving me wonderful musical advice, as well as practical advice for handling

nerves on stage. I am indebted to Vesa for putting me in contact with my former Professor, Yair Kless, in Graz, Austria, with whom I completed my Bachelor and Master studies. I must make mention of my first teacher, Stephen Larsen, who was an important mentor to me in my formative years and taught me to think critically about my violin playing; and Timothy Robb, my first violin teacher, who had a great deal of patience with me when I wasn't old enough to tie my shoelaces. Do you have a favourite violin? Currently I have two main performing instruments, the one built by my father, David Morrison, and a Gagliano built in 1770. My father picked up violin-making in the late '90s after always being so fascinated with the mystery surrounding a good sounding instrument. On my 21st birthday, he gifted me with an instrument he had made, and this instrument accompanied me to Europe. I've performed many concerts on this wonderful instrument, including my complete Bachelor and Master studies – I even won the first audition into the Philharmonic playing on my father's violin. I still play regularly in the Opera with this instrument and will always hold it dear. Last year I went on a search for an old violin, partly as an investment, and mainly for a violin that could stand up against the Stradivarius and other fantastic instruments in the orchestra. The search for a great violin led me to many violin dealers and ateliers in London, Germany and Austria. I must have tried over a hundred different instruments before finally finding the Gagliano. The sound is rich and complex, with an incredible projection that reaches to the very back of any concert hall.

A TOAST TO THE RAVE DAYS It’s the 90s – we’re wearing acid-wash denim, skinny leather ties and boat shoes. C+C Music Factory is blaring from Celicas and the ‘Getlaidium’, and its laser show is the coolest thing in the city. Paris Texas coloured Levis, Marlboro cigarettes in paper packets, KFC at 3am on Colombo Street. If you’re tripping down memory lane right now, you’re not alone; if you’re not doing anything about it though, you are. There’s a quiet, underground movement happening beneath our noses to bring back one of the best parts of the 90s, and you’re invited.

t feels like the world is always running to catch up with RDU station director James Meharry.

He was ahead of the curve in the 90s when he was getting into the rave scene in Christchurch, having house parties so he could DJ. James set the benchmark for rave gigs in 1995 when he organised Ultra-sonic in the old West End picture theatre in Cathedral Square.

While the rest of us were dodging the cops at the Carlton or sweet talking our way past the bouncers at the top of the Palladium steps, James and his mates had their eyes on a bigger, wilder venue by far.

The old theatre had been tipped for destruction, and good fortune and contacts just happened to ensure James and his crew knew the guy who owned it. Around 1200 people packed out the venue for a rare ‘legal’ rave that has gone down in history as a cult classic – before social media, before Facebook messages, before mobile phones.

A dedicated Xennial, James has his finger on the button of today’s technology but he’s utterly resolute in his passion for analogue

Tucked away in the corner of the Boxed Quarter, beneath the bright and digital RDU station, is his lair – a studio stacked to the ceiling with old vinyl and his vinyl cutter, where he creates actual 7” vinyl records every month for the station’s Patreons – people and organisations that donate money every month to support local artists.

“We’re tapping into our analogue past, that affinity with old media.

Things with substance, that you can hold in your hands.”

That yearning for the past stuck with him. He almost relaunched Ultra-sonic in 2015 as a 20-year tribute, but the timing wasn't right.

"Christchurch just wasn't ready. So I just put a pin in it.”

James had been collecting and cataloguing flyers from the rave scene of the pre-2000s with the idea of creating a coffee table book or e-book while sharing them on the My Nightlife Facebook page.

At the same time, Aragorn Urquhart, who cut his teeth stacking the decks at central-city haunts like Heaven, Base and the Concrete Club, had also been quietly reminiscing.

“I never really stopped thinking about the scene and the excellent times that we had. I have many incredible and often hilarious stories/memories from around 15-20 years ago involving many of my closest friends.

“A friend used an old photograph for a profile pic and it reminded me that there was an amazing time being had, so I decided to put it out to the people in the photo that we needed to have a reunion DJ set.

They all said yes.”

And so Toast started cooking.

“We can actually have those moments again,” says James. “We want to give everyone who visits My Nightlife on Facebook the opportunity to get in first. We want everyone who's in our age group, if you were there, if you were going to any nightclubs in that period, then you should come along to this, because this is bringing back a little bit of that nightlife."

“As life gets busy and fills your time with family, work and everything else, it’s easy to lose contact with the friends/people that you have shared such amazing times with,” says Aragorn.

“This is a chance to have a 20-year reunion and to celebrate the music, clubs and parties, but most importantly it is a chance to celebrate our friendships.”

Featuring epic DJs from 90s Christchurch including Aragorn, Pyre, King Al, Hemi, Craig Shaw, Nick T and of course, Pylonz, Toast promises to be not just a rave but also a trip back in time.

"We've got the original DJs, but we've also got a heap of other people interested – guys who used to be on the door of some of those old venues, and some of the bartenders."

Having D4 come on as the venue was a coup for the project. Like the warehouses of old, the black-box function venue is perfectly suited to the idea around the rave, says co-owner Isabelle Teresa.

“We share the same passion and we’re also older clubbers who experienced the rave scene as it developed and at its height, both in Christchurch and London.

“We also recognised the organisers' genuine commitment to making this event as high quality, authentic and personally friendly as possible – it's about re-gathering people who might not be part of the regular going-out scene anymore but have great memories of it and want to meet other like-minded people.”

lighting designers in the London rave scene in the 1990s and mid 2000s, and while Isabelle and Mark were clubbing in London, James, Aragorn and like-minded DJs were banging out the beats in Christchurch – at places like Ministry, Quadrophenia, Joe Boledos and The Firehouse – while also organising traditional rave events in warehouses and the hills around the city.

James fondly remembers The Quickening at Skellerup Park in the Port Hills. “We set up 20,000 watts worth of sound in this big tent and we belted it out over Cashmere.

For some reason, the Department of Conservation (DOC) guy let us do it.” The punchline, of course, was that the noise complaints to the city council all night never made it to DOC, so the gig pumped on until the small hours, much to residents’ consternation.

Like those raves of old, Toast has been an underground discussion up till now. Tickets could only be purchased by clicking a link on the My Nightlife Facebook page, which has to date been shared among friends and those in the know.

Now, though, it’s time to throw open the invitation to anyone who needs a bit of a rave in their life.

“Christchurch has been through so much but the tide is finally turning – there’s no point sitting isolated at home. People need to connect, and Toast is a perfect opportunity to start those relationships again,” says Isabelle.

“Ravers tend to have open minds and open hearts, along with a passion for exploration and fun.

The nights are long, you know you're going to have lots of different experiences, meeting new people and hearing all sorts of

music – you just relax and throw yourself into it.”

For Aragorn, it’s a chance to revisit the security of the old rave scene.

“I’m excited to see everyone. I get emotional when I think about all of the people – the Toastees – catching up with each other.

People are flying in from outside of New Zealand for the opportunity to reconnect.”

“Rave was about the experience, about participation through multiple genres,” says James. “It was trance and jungle, techno and house, and of course, the ambient zone. So that's what this will be.

Cityscape joins one of the first DJs on the scene, and Fatboy Slim support act, Craig Shaw to chat about what’s hot in town and on the music scene right now.

W

hat’s your favourite out-of-town venue to play? That’s a tough question as I have a few faves. Queenstown has a couple of groovy staple bars, Surreal and The Bunker, but you can’t beat an outdoor festival. Rhythm & Alps 2018/19 was the winner on this front with a superb location, production team and killer crowd! You’ve just supported Fatboy Slim here in Christchurch – was there a highlight? I was lucky enough to play one of the support slots in 1999 with Norman at the Ministry and he signed one of his records for me back then. I was able to have a chat with him backstage at the recent Christchurch gig and had him sign the same record again! The man is a legend and his ability to find and rework a sample and turn it into a classic is a real skill. My support slot mix is available on Soundcloud. Search djcraigshaw. Spotify has turned us all into amateur DJs – what’s your suggestion for putting together the perfect playlist? I guess the main ingredient is creating a future feeling. If you’re going to create a playlist for a bar, party or event then you need to be able to visually sit yourself in that future moment

picturing what people will want to be listening to. I have created playlists for parties where we have changed the music every hour to a different genre and they have been the most fun! Putting yourself into that moment and picturing what you or your mates want to hear before it happens is pretty special when you get it right! Always have back-ups!

Have you got a Spotify playlist fans can follow? djcraigshaw is my Spotify username and Soul Breakfast is one of my most popular playlists. This is an eclectic mix of old soul jams and 70s classics which have a place at certain times but there are a good number of playlists in there to choose from. Fat Freddy’s remixed is one of my faves. Most out-of-control crowd? With a good party comes a lot of consumption and you see a lot of different sights and “events”. The one that sticks out the most is when a wee fisticuff outside a bar I was DJ-ing at called 124 on the old strip turned into a 200-plus person brawl and all the bars shut down immediately, which had never happened before. Leave it at home I say! Favourite local band/best musical export from the Garden City? Tiki Taane. A true talent that just

Do you have a ritual you do before each show to ‘bring out’ Dirty Cash? This is something that PZ and I keep working on, as when we perform together as Dirty Cash we have to put on a show, not just play music. We put a lot of thought into our set and bring a few things to the stage so that it’s not one-dimensional. After all the prep, some quiet downtime before the gig and then a couple of quiets to get you in the mood normally has you amping to get amongst it.

Advice for anyone wanting to get into DJ-ing? A true connected feeling to music and a broad musical knowledge is a must. What would be your superpower?

The ability to fly. That would be awesome.

For local music lovers yearning for tangible evidence of the nostalgia revival, you can't go past RDU's Patreon package.

Cityscape caught up with the man behind the initiative and ran our ears over some of the recent recordings.

A bastion of diversity and local support, RDU introduced its Singles Club a year ago to increase support and engagement for NZ music. The station, in association with In Real Life, had been cutting a 7" vinyl every month since 2013, with one being given away on air and one being archived at RDU. To increase support for the station and local music, the Patreon initiative was started and pledges were called for.

Listeners and music lovers can sign up at three different levels, each of which will garner you sincere thanks, but with the top tier – around $100 a month – patrons receive their own collectible copy of the 7” vinyl of the month's two selected artists.

"It's not huge amounts of money, but it all counts," says RDU station director James Meharry. "We're up to 130-odd artists who have been profiled since 2013, but we've given around $3500 over the past year, which is not insignificant considering we really need to rub our sticks together ourselves."

RDU introduces 30 to 50 new pieces of music a month, James says. "We have four curators from our community who have these roles of giving us a range of music – not just in their area of expertise but a little bit wider – and they give us four or five pieces of music every week. So we manage this really diverse playlist and that's the essence of RDU – diversity."

With 58 shows and 119 hosts, RDU's team and staff then make a decision about which two artists will feature on the vinyl.

James says there are a lot of discussions going on in New Zealand at the moment, from the

local music industry right up to senior levels of government, about why it's so hard to make a living out of music in this country.

"Music is the waking backdrop to most of our lives so it has this substantial role in our communities, and it's very closely associated to mental health, but it's still nigh on impossible to do it full-time.

A short stroll away is The Craft Embassy who have a great lineup of musical talent that takes to the stage – recent gigs include Adam McGrath. Taking up residence within the Christchurch Art Gallery is Universo Brasserie & Bar, where on Sundays you can pair a sublime cocktail with live music that’ll keep your arvo ‘lax. For a fine folk music fix, swing by The Brewery’s courtyard at The Tannery, where you can catch local and international artists. Multi-tasking Pomeroy’s mission to be a great community pub naturally includes an emphasis on music, and their monthly calendar is always jam-packed with spots for regular favourites that turn out afternoons and nights of jazz, folk, blues and acoustic sets, all lubricated for listening by their amazing range of craft beer.

GIGS TO CATCH This autumn is turning out some primo concerts and gigs. Be sure to catch Bryan Adams and get some heavy metal in ya with Slayer and Anthrax. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Charley Pride brings charm to the Town Hall, and Blue Smoke has a wicked lineup of artists including Wallis Bird, The Paper Kites and Anxiety Club. Don’t miss Broods, Australian natives Ocean Alley and Matt Corby, The Proclaimers with Kiwi songstress Mel Parsons, A Bowie Celebration, Norah Jones, The Pink Floyd Experience and The Monkees.

PARTY DOWN If there’s one venue that consistently pumps out wicked gigs, it’s Blue Smoke. Sitting pretty in the beautifully renovated Tannery precinct of Woolston, Blue Smoke is a primo spot to catch local and international artists.

With a constantly evolving and diverse lineup of musos bringing their all to the Blue Smoke stage, good times aplenty at this funky spot.

If it’s a big gig you’re after, no doubt The Bedford has or will have some quality musical talent on the cards. Past Bedford alum include; Shihad, Mancunian rockers James, Katchafire, Six60 and Delta Heavy.

Known for their super slick drum ‘n’ bass events, D4 out in Woolston is always pumping with the freshest tunes from newcomers on the DJ scene through to those who have cemented themselves as an authority figure. The venue itself is a whirlwind of laser lights plus other effects which chuck you into the deep end of the rave realm. Rub shoulders with some musical elite at The Foundry where they play host to some big names in the music industry. Dux Central has a range of venues to suit your mood, with most of its musical emphasis at the Upper Dux which plays host to live bands and DJ sets on weekends. Every Thursday the Emerald Room has a special Girls Night – treat yourself to killer deals all the while

kicking it to a live DJ. An eclectic mix of beats waits down at Stranges Lane, from solo jams by local artists through to epic DJ sets.

Orange Studio out in Ferrymead is an amalgamation of music, audio and creative production and they also have live music evenings from jazz to classical music.

Upstairs at Boo Radley’s you’ll find regular gigs which turn out great sets, open-mic sessions and the odd comedy night. Just downstairs, Little Neighbourhood is designed to maximise your enjoyment with DJs taking over the decks on Saturday evenings. St Asaph Street’s swishy Japanese-inspired fave Empire turns up the tunes loud Thursdays to Sundays. Expect thumping DJ sets, drum ‘n’ bass and more.

From here it’s a short jaunt down to Baretta where the epic live music scene goes into overdrive every Friday and Saturday evening, or head upstairs to Engineers who are dedicated to “the engineering of good times and great food and drinks.” A slice of Havana is on the cards at The Cuban where they regularly turn out pumping nights and even throw in special events and big names. Spice up your night and get your boogie on at these following haunts: Fat Eddie's has become a mainstay on the Christchurch nightlife scene with a banging band and various performers churning out top-notch tunes every weekend – seriously, if you haven’t checked out Fat Eddie's on a Saturday, get there stat. No matter what day of the week it is, there’s always live entertainment down at the Carlton Bar & Eatery – from live bands to solo performers, as well as calling in big name talent, you’re guaranteed a swell time here. Chiwahwah Mexican Bar doesn’t shy away from its ethos “Christchurch’s craziest Mexican joint” and

The Bog Irish Bar is consistently producing the musical goods and has plenty of vibes that’ll keep you going long into the night. With gigs locked in every Thursday, Friday and Saturday – and on the odd occasion Wednesday and Sunday – darkroom offers up a variety of performers ranging in style from folk, indie and metal to electronic. As well as hosting pool and billiards tournaments, come the late hours of the evening The Slate Room also hosts various events with their space kitted out accordingly. Rocking quite possibly the coolest exterior – trust us, it’s awesome – Smash Palace has become a city institution with its regular late night gigs.

ow would you compare Christchurch’s dining scene to the dining scene abroad? Obviously being exposed to the restaurant scene in London and Europe was an amazing experience, but there are also great chefs and restaurants here in Christchurch.

I definitely believe that, with the post-rebuild hospitality rebirth and the calibre of people in the industry, we have the potential to have a number of world-class restaurants here. You’ve worked under [Michelin chef] Jason Atherton – what was that experience like? It was the hardest thing I've done in my life. Long days and nights, high pressure and constantly busy. But I look back on my four years in his company and really value my time there. I am the chef I am today because of those experiences and the great chefs I worked under.

I learned a lot more than I could ever have imagined.

You originally hail from Christchurch – what drew you back to the Garden City? Christchurch is home. After a long time away I just wanted to come back. I would love to make a difference to the restaurant scene here, and I believe that Miro will give me the opportunity to do that.

Highlight of your career? While at City Social I got to cook for Josh Emett and Peter Gordon, two chefs that I admire greatly. I got to meet them both as well so that was pretty special. Also getting the head chef position at Miro was a huge achievement for me. It feels like all my hard work is paying off. Go-to dish for a dinner party? Whole beef fillet on the barbecue and all the trimmings, with chocolate roulade for dessert. It's the first recipe mum gave me when I was at university and it never fails to please. What’s your fave dish to indulge in? Bacon and egg pie from an undisclosed petrol station. And scrambled eggs with lots of butter. It’s the simple things. If you weren’t a chef, what would you be doing? I started cooking professionally when I was 25. I had tried my hand at a number of other jobs and studies but just couldn't get into them. My passion is food so if I wasn't a chef it would be something else food related. A gardener?! Three key ingredients to a tasty dish? Love, passion, and fresh, seasonal, well-respected ingredients. And salt!! Are there any new twists that you’ll bring to the menu at Miro?

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel. I want to produce fresh food with lots of flavours that looks beautiful on the plate. I've got some classic dishes on the menu that don't need changing alongside some modern dishes.

I want to offer Christchurch food they might not have tried and, if they have, versions of it that are the best they have ever had. I have heavy influences in modern European and British cuisine but, at the end of the day, I'm from New Zealand and want to show that in my food. I don't really like the word fusion – it’s more of an amalgamation of culinary culture. What’s one thing people may not know about you? I think most people think chefs are tough, but deep down I'm a mummy's boy. No. 1 dish that people should try at Miro?

I think that our Croque Madame is the best breakfast item in Christchurch. And on our lunch and dinner menu the green bean salad with blue cheese, nectarine, almonds and horseradish is a little bit different but absolutely amazing. miro.nz

Y

ou’ve been vegan for two decades, have you noticed any significant changes, say in people’s attitude towards veganism?

When I turned vegan I had to take my own soy milk to cafés and mushrooms to BBQs. My family took the mickey for years – an uncle even gave me an ox heart as a prank gift for Christmas one year. Now half my family have either a plant-based diet or are at least plant curious. I used to get a lot of "Where do you get your protein from?" and "But what do you eat?!" and I never get that any more. People's understanding of and interest in veganism has expanded hugely and a lot of myths have been dispelled. Advice for anyone considering veganism? Do a little reading about nutrition. This is not just for vegans – everyone should understand what the human needs and how to get it. And get used to reading ingredients labels! There is a lot of localised advice online. And don't 'vegan police' yourself. There's no right way to live – just educate yourself and make decisions every day that fit with your personal ethics and goals. You run a successful business, have a stellar music career, write a fantastic blog and are also a mum – would you attribute your lifestyle to helping maintain the balance? Thanks! And no – veganism isn't a magic solution to the unending work/family/creativity/relaxation balance struggle. My only tips for that are 1. Use the village, whatever form that comes in.

2. Find the thing that relaxes you and do it every day. 3. Wine. What is your go-to dish to whip up? Noodles. Always noodles. Most often a type of rice noodle soup but I'm also partial to fried noodles, ramen, dan dan noodles, somen, soba salads... My Instagram speaks for itself. gratergoods.co.nz

As autumn brings a flash-back to the wild days of the 70s, Cityscape spent some time with the brand’s creative director Deanna Didovich to find out where the inspiration comes from and what’s next for RUBY. You’ve cemented yourself as an authority figure on the fashion scene here in New Zealand and abroad. How would you say the RUBY brand has evolved since its inception? The RUBY brand has evolved slowly and surely to what it is today. We have always made sure that our product offering is the best representation of our brand and always have our customers in the forefront of our minds. In a constantly evolving industry, how do you ensure you stay on-trend or in the loop with all things fashion? In this age of social media I am constantly engrossed in what is happening both locally and globally, however I try not to become too caught up in

‘trends’. I find that if I am influenced by something, it finds its way into my collections without my even really being aware of it. Where would you like to see RUBY in 10 years? Thriving both in New Zealand and internationally. I love that so many people have grown up with RUBY and that it can really be worn in some way at all ages and I hope this continues. Time to get nostalgic – what is your favourite collection of all time? I love so many, but one that always stands out to me would have to be the AW11 collection, The Adventurers. We had our first New Zealand Fashion Week show for this collection and there were so many signature RUBY pieces created at this time. Speaking of collections, your AW19 Art Class collection is a nod to the eccentricity of the 70s – what

prompted you to roll with this creative direction? Late last year I became really intrigued by mid-century design and furniture, and this inspiration spread into my design process. Describe RUBY AW19 in three words. Outside the lines. If there were one designer you’d love to collaborate with, who would that be? With this season in mind, it would have to be Lee Miller. What’s your prediction for where fashion will go this year? I think there will be a lot of bold and vibrant colours. Think deep purple, cobalt blues, and rich golds. Describe the ‘RUBY’ girl.

The RUBY girl is inclusive, and embraces challenges and whatever may come her way. Her energy is positive and warm, and her friendships are everything to her.

And of course she puts a touch of sass on everything she does!

Describe your own personal style.

I’m pretty relaxed when it comes to my own style. At this time of the year I live in silk dresses with cotton shirts over the top, and in winter, loose pants and soft knitwear.

The Crossing is fast becoming Christchurch’s fashion hub. What was it that made you move to the CBD? We have evolved in Christchurch as the city has and we really love the location and the vibrancy of The Crossing and knew it would be the perfect spot for our new store. Your absolute must-haves from the upcoming collection? Our Otto Turtleneck sweaters in both Marine and Amethyst, the Lee silk miniskirt, and our black Alexia Blazer.

What’s one thing that every fashionista should have in their handbag? I can’t speak for everyone, but I always have a hairbrush! Fashion is… a fun time.

What are you reading/watching/ listening to? Listening to a lot of True Crime podcasts, and reading Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton for my book club.

Where the wild things are

rom the perfect print to the coats you’ll be clamouring for when the temperature drops, here’s a few tips to get you through AW19. Fashion is going wild this season; think animal print.

It seems our wardrobes will be getting a whole lot fiercer with zebra, tiger, snake and crocodile prints joining the classic leopard that we know and love. It’s a jungle out there! Whether it is a bag, a coat or a statement belt, animal print is like wearing a red lip. It instantly elevates any outfit and always looks great.

Stylist Tip: For a more day-to-night piece, invest in a leopard print midi skirt and you will not regret it.

The key to dressing fashionably in the cooler months without compromising comfort? Transform yourself into a human artichoke. Or, in other words, learn how to layer by playing with texture and volume in a masterful game of accumulation.

Get ready to pile it on!

My favourite three layering pieces are: roll necks, sweaters and ponchos/capes. Not only will a roll neck keep you snug all season long, it looks good with anything – layered under a sleeveless dress,

paired with a sweater or simply worn on its own. There’s no denying that sweaters are the building blocks of every wellrounded autumn wardrobe which is why, as it cools down, our hunt for the perfect sweater heats up.

Look for styles that are cosy, cute, and easy to layer. For the finale, add a loose-fitting poncho or cape.

Every stylist, influencer and fashionista will agree – checks, plaid and tartan are no strangers to the winter wardrobe. From jackets to pants, oversized scarves to statement coats, the timeless print is on fire this season and there are

no signs of it slowing down. Try mixing your plaids not just by colour but by material too and if statement pieces aren’t your thing, you can make a more subtle nod to the look with your accessories.

Stylist Top Tip: If you’re buying one checked piece this season, I’d recommend a Prince of Wales blazer. Use it to smarten up denim, to offset the floatiness of a chiffon floral dress or as a stylish cover-up for evenings. W

hat prompted you to expand to the South Island? We have an online store that offers free shipping so we’ve always been available throughout the country but in terms of having a bricks-andmortar retail presence in Christchurch, it was a case of getting the right retailers on board.

Ballantynes is the perfect partner for Harris Tapper. Singled out in Vogue Australia as one of the five brands to watch from New Zealand Fashion Week must have been a pivotal moment – what was going through your head when you saw that? It was amazing to be one of the five but the best thing about it was that we were among friends. The other four designers are very talented designers and people we know and admire in our industry. The fashion industry is constantly evolving, how do you stay in the loop with what is trending? It’s like a sixth sense. There’s a constant accumulation of material that builds up in your subconscious and

within that you start to see trends, both present and past that somehow make their way into your designs. Consciously, and from a business perspective, you have to ensure you’re aware of changes in all industries to stay ahead of the game. You both have over two decades of experience in the fashion industry – when did you know that you wanted to pursue your own fashion label? After working in the industry for a number of years we noticed a gap in the market. We wanted to create a brand that went against industry norms with a ‘see-now buy-now’ business model as well as an inclusive and intelligent approach to fashion, without compromising aesthetics. Fashion trends that you love. They are forever changing but we do believe that a classic shirt is something we’ll always love. Fashion trends that need to go. Cityscape catches up with one of the city’s leading hair stylists, Niq James, of Headspace on hair trends for 2019 and his favourite cut and style.

The 80s is making a comeback, do you think we’ll see the return of the perm? We are seeing a lot of volume, body and curl with hairstyles at the moment. There is a return to ‘glamour looks’ and although there is curl seen, most people only want the option of having curl so will use styling tools like GHD curls rather than being limited to a look by having a perm.

What does 2019 hold for hair trends? We are seeing the return of the centre parting, slick styling for a structured look. The bob or lob (long bob) is still popular and versatile. We are seeing beautiful coppers and warm brunettes. Men’s looks are still really structured with a modern twist – think high fade with some movement through the top. The beard has been around for about eight years and is still popular but fashion conscious men are favouring a look that is a little different or edgier than the norm. Maybe longer with some movement (think Jake Gyllenhaal and Bradley Cooper).

Favourite go-to hair products? Redken Spray Wax – it comes in an aerosol can, has great control without the thick gluing texture that wax sometimes gives. Great for guys and girls. We custom make stairs a lot as they become quite an important feature in our houses. People often justify the money spent as it feels like a piece of sculpture once complete. The external cladding is brought internally through the entry to define the sense of circulation, almost as though you’re stepping outside when you move between the living room and bedroom spaces.

Canopy Landscape Architects’ Paul Roper-Gee tells us how architectural collaboration creates complementary environments inside and out.

G

reat landscape design comes in a multitude of styles and scales.

A design works when it gels with the people who live in it and when it responds to the unique opportunities and constraints of each particular site. Some of the best landscapes are a result of close collaboration between a client, landscape architect and architect at the outset of a project and developing the landscape design concurrently with the house architecture.

One of Canopy’s recently completed larger scale residential projects illustrates this approach, working in collaboration with Warren and Mahoney Architects.

The site is set in an elevated position on a semi rural hillside with views to the coast.

The clients were looking for contemporary and complementary house and landscape design. The house is a bold modernist single level dwelling using a limited exterior materials palette of concrete and glass.

Working in tune with this striking architecture, the landscape design is also a bold sculptural gesture while providing personable outdoor living spaces for the client’s extended family.

The foreground landscape to the house is deliberately restrained with focus given to the wider site views. A series of curving grass terraces and mass planting of ornamental grasses provide a sculptural contrast to the developing native forest backdrop behind the house which nestles the house into the site, providing enclosure to this prominent position.

Closer to the house, an outdoor entertainment courtyard has been created as a linear extension of the architecture with a long narrow shape and angular form. The courtyard allows the family to gather and entertain friends and includes an outdoor lounge, fire pit, dining area, and outdoor kitchen. The space is enclosed by the forest backdrop and timber and steel pergola structure. Materials relate to the house with the use of off-the-form concrete, concrete precast

panels, steel, gravel and concrete paving.

The house is approached through a newly planted native forest created from locally endemic eco-sourced species. A softer approach to materials is used in the entry court with grass block pavers to car parking areas and lush planting reinforcing the native forest aesthetic.

The utility spaces have been developed to provide their functional purpose but still have a high quality aesthetic. Clotheslines have been designed to integrate into the landscape in a simple and sculptural way with black upright steel posts. Concrete pavers and gravels extend through this space, ensuring functionality but retaining a softer aesthetic with grey gravel and concrete edging. canopy.co.nz

H

ow did the business come about? Station Road Home began 25 years ago, founded by my father. He was handcrafting furniture from solid timbers which quickly progressed into a family business with a strong focus on premium craftsmanship, internationally inspired styles and artisan hand finishes. While time has moved on, Station Road is still an independent family business which holds true to these values.

What got you into furniture and interiors? I don’t ever remember a time when I wasn’t passionate about design, craftsmanship and beautifully made furniture, interiors and architecture – I think they call this the furniture bug! When the family started in furniture, it was a natural progression for me to include the design and retail

aspect. I’m continually inspired by great design, the excitement of exploring and discovering new styles, amazing locations and international cultures. You now do a lot more than just furniture?

We understand that in today’s busy lifestyle, our clients are likely to have a vision they’re working towards for their home interiors but don’t always have the time or knowledge to resource, manage and execute that vision. Extraordinary Morocco Travel blogger Justine Tyerman comes close to hugging a strange man at the airport in Marrakech.

N

ever underestimate the sheer joy of a transfer from airport to hotel in a seriously foreign country, especially when in that twilight zombie zone of the sleep-deprived after 30 hours of travel. It’s one of the most valuable aspects of booking with an experienced travel company.

The heady thrill of seeing my name on a piece of cardboard was the most beautiful thing as I cleared customs in Marrakech. I stopped just short of hugging Lyazid, who had been waiting there patiently to collect me, holding up the large card with Ms Justine Tyerman on it.

Checking-in at the luxurious five-star Sofitel Marrakech was a dream. Smart men in traditional Moroccan costume opened doors to a haven of cool and whisked my case up to my room, which just happened to have a large balcony overlooking a gorgeous pool. In the city’s chic Hivernage district, the

I caught up on my sleep in one hit and was bright-eyed and ready to start my Ancient Kingdoms Holidays tour the next day. That’s when the truly extraordinary began.

Among many highlights of my eight days in Morocco was the cooking school at the prestigious La Maison Arabe in Marrakech.

Here the delightful Amina, a traditional Moroccan chef, or ‘dada’, managed to teach me, a kitchen dummy, how to prepare a delicious chicken tagine with preserved lemons and olives, and salads with aubergine, tomatoes, garlic, green peppers and spices. I have since cooked it many times to ‘wow’ my friends.

La Maison Arabe has an illustrious past. In the 1940s, their restaurant was the first to open to foreigners, entertaining such

celebrities as Sir Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle and Jackie Kennedy. After extensive renovations, the establishment debuted in 1998 as the first riad-hotel in Marrakech.

The maze of souks in the narrow winding alleyways of the ancient medinas in Marrakech and Fes sell everything from food to homewares. Many who live and work there never venture beyond their own neighbourhood.

Aït Benhaddou, a grand fortified city along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains in the province of Ouarzazate, Aït Benhaddou is a

labyrinth of kasbahs (fortresses) and ksars (castles) built into a hillside above a beautiful river valley.

A stunning example of earthen clay architecture, the site has become famous as a film set for such movies as Jesus of Nazareth, The Jewel of the Nile, The Mummy, Gladiator, Alexander and the television series Game of Thrones.

I loved the colour, shapes and textures of the traditional adobe buildings constructed from the earth on which they stand. The kasbahs, made up of squares, rectangles and castle-like towers, sit so comfortably in the landscape, they are almost invisible.

Morocco also has impressive Roman ruins. At Volubilis, we saw the well-preserved remains of a Roman city constructed from the 3rd Century BC. The ruins were devastated by an earthquake in the mid-18th Century and then looted

by Moroccan rulers seeking stone for the building of Meknes. It was later identified as the ancient city

of Volubilis and today it is also protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The thousand-year-old Chouara Tannery is an iconic landmark in Fes. The tannery processes cow, sheep, goat and camel hide using methods largely unchanged since medieval times.

We watched from a balcony as men, waist deep in dye, tended to the hides in dozens of stone tubs.

The bright pink babouches (leather slippers) I bought at Chouara are among my most treasured Moroccan mementos.

Maison de Cadeaux Berberes, in Tinghir, had hundreds of exquisite handmade carpets and rugs lining the floors and walls, as well as precious amber jewellery. An elder in indigo robes and shesh (turban) explained the history behind the carpets, which are made by the women of the tribes. Each carpet is unique.

Our accommodation throughout our journey was a perfect balance of sophisticated, modern five-star establishments in the large cities like Marrakech, Fes and Casablanca, and traditional riads (traditional Moroccan houses or

palaces with an interior garden or courtyard) and kasbahs in the smaller settlements.

The eight days travelling in a wide arc from Marrakech to Casablanca passed smoothly, thanks to the well-oiled efforts of the local representatives behind the scenes.

Morocco is a country where it pays to travel with experienced, trustworthy guides who know the language, the people and the customs. They also know how to navigate the medinas and the labyrinth of souks where there are no maps or street names. Visitors can – and do – get hopelessly lost.

You’ve worked with a few producers, at home in Melbourne and in the States. How did those experiences differ and/or shape your sound?

The sounds are often shaped by the experience and the surroundings.

We’ve found recording at home difficult, as the creator process is interrupted by home life, work and family. It’s been nice to fully immerse ourselves in the last few albums and return home with a finished project.

You seem pretty prolific in creating material, much of which never makes it to albums. What happens to all that great material? It stays around, there have been songs that we’ve reworked and brought back. Maybe one day we’ll release a rarities and B-sides. You have been making music together for nearly a decade – what’s it like working that closely with the same bunch of people for that long? It’s the worst! Nah it’s great.

We’re like family. Dependable, fun, annoying and inspiring. Who’s got the most annoying habits? What are they? Raz breathes real loud through his nose when he eats. Haha. Your music videos are as beautifully crafted as your songs – who comes up with the vision for your videos? We’ve done some ourselves early on. But we’ve outsourced production lately. Sam still has most of the creative direction for the videos though. Quickfire ... What are you currently: Listening to? Slum Village. Eating? M&M’s. Drinking?

THE CURSE OF THE WEEPING WOMAN In his directorial debut, Michael Chaves puts his cinematic spin on the Spanish folklore of La Llorona and brings it to the big screen in his supernatural horror flick The Curse of the Weeping Woman. Telling the tale of widowed social worker Anna, who is roped into a case due to the striking similarities between that and the macabre occurrences terrifying her family, she discovers that La Llorona has latched herself onto Anna. THE SUMMER OF ’19

The city’s fixation with musical nostalgia continues with the arrival of Canadian rocker Bryan Adams.

T

he hitmaker will bang out the sounds in Hagley Park on St Patrick’s Day alongside Kiwi artists Jordan Luck and Dave Dobbyn. Cityscape caught up with Adams and found out which other Kiwi he’s keen to play with.

You’re heading back to NZ within a year of your last tour – what is your favourite place? We had the extremely good fortune to be taken up the coast of New Zealand in a helicopter to Matakana. The gig was great, the country was breathtaking. It’s no wonder all the billionaires want to buy land there.

It’s no wonder the NZ government won’t let them! Your foundation does incredible work for educating children and young people worldwide. If you could teach the children of the world one thing, what would it be? All children are born compassionate and open. Somewhere along the way, their upbringing and surroundings change that. This comes from either the parents or the schools. Maintaining compassion is what I want my daughters to do. What’s the saying? Never judge a book by its cover? Amen to that. If you could alter one event in the history of the world, what would it be and why? Religion has caused more

suffering and divisiveness than anything else, so let’s start with whoever came up with those manipulative ideas. Did you enjoy crafting Pretty Woman, the musical? Is it something you’d like to do more of? Yes I’d love to do more of it, it was an amazing experience. Two years of solid songwriting, and a Broadway musical that is up and running. It’s planning to go to many other countries in 2020, which is also exciting. More air miles, here I come. You’ve had a couple of cool collaborations on Shine the Light – Ed Sheeran and Jennifer Lopez.

Can we still expect the same rock feel or are you heading somewhere different with this album? My albums are pretty much a continuous story, strung together with my voice. I occasionally drift into another realm such as working with Ed which was great fun. And of course, history has proven that I love to sing with people, so singing with Jennifer was simply fantastic.

Is there anyone you’re eyeing up to work with on the next album?

Is Lorde up for a sing-song?

You’re pretty consistent with your album releases – how do you keep finding new inspiration? There’s always another song, there’s always another idea, and for sure I’ll go on producing ideas long after the lights fade. Once you’ve

created music, there’s an unstoppable internal compass that just wants to make more. However, I do quite like growing tomatoes as well. You’ve also proven your worth as a photographer – how did that come about? What do you consider your best shot to date? It’s not something that just came about, I’ve been doing it forever. My best shots are all family ones, like my grandparents and dad who have all passed away. I took my photography to a different level sometime in the 90s producing album covers, making headshots for my actor friends and doing a bit of portraiture to raise money for breast cancer when one of my friends died really young.

Marie Claire magazine in London were the first to hire me for a fashion shoot, and it’s been going on since then. If you have a chance you can check out my book Exposed if you want to see a retrospective. Are you a Netflix binger or a book reader? Current favourite show/author? I’ve no time for TV, although I did enjoy The Crown. I have books on my phone which I read on planes, currently reading the Creedence Clearwater biography and also a book called: The Deals That Made The World by Jacques Peretti, pretty grim stuff. What has been your go-to artist/album for the summer ’19? It’s Bob Marley again for the umpteenth year. What can Christchurch fans expect at Hagley Park?
