The final instalment in the CSO’s stellar Lamb and Hayward Masterworks season is Pictures at an Exhibition. FASHION FORWARD Cityscape catches up with leading New Zealand designers Karen Walker and NOM*d’s Margarita Robertson on the inspiration behind their latest collections along with a specially curated selection of their favourite pieces.

t’s all about making “something new and cool” for Kiwi fashion royalty Karen Walker and her bi-hemispheric approach to design. Eschewing seasonal constraints, her global vision (reflecting a truly international customer base) offers the lauded designer the freedom to create season-less fashion featuring several key pieces/elements that stylishly address weather extremes in both hemispheres.

“We’re thinking about seasons from a very global perspective, not by what the weather is like,” says Walker, whose ready-to-wear collections are based around telling four ‘stories’ a year. Ever-changing and designed to overlap, it’s a design stream with no best before date – each ‘story’ remains in-store as long as it feels relevant.

In her latest release, Love Letter, Walker continues the story of Lost in Paradise’s tropical atoll shipwrecked protagonists Rimbaud and John Lydon, and, as its name suggests, celebrates the romance and glamour of airmail. It was Walker’s global approach that inspired her latest ‘story’.

“That idea of things going around the world got us thinking about old-fashioned post,” says the former child stamp collector who would fight with her brother over the best stamps attached to the letters sent by their father when he was away travelling.

Key to Love Letter is the immediately recognisable shade of par avion envelope blue in sheer organza for knife pleat dresses and sunray pleat skirts, Edwardian postage stamps featuring camels and giraffes alongside famed icon Runaway Girl, and floral prints referencing exotic wild cottage roses are all intended to be mixed, layered and worn together.

Embracing up-in-the-air-chic, the red, white and blue 70s striped Crêpe de Chine blouses hark back to glamorous international travel, while slouchy trousers and tie-waisted suit jackets tag in comfort for longer hauls.

Walker’s signature plaids get frilled, pleated and flared, ruching appears at necklines, waists and cuffs, and frayed edges celebrate Love Letter’s appetite for deconstruction. karenwalker.com

acing twisted pop culture references with NOM*d’s signature wry humour is at the core of iconic fashion powerhouse Margarita Robertson’s new preternatural spring/summer 18/19 collection Jeepers Creepers. For Robertson, instilling underlying humour is all part of the design process.

“With summer 18/19, as with all our collections, it’s important for me to have a touch of humour, something to bring a smile to the face,” says the style maven.

Riffing on memories of well-loved comic characters, TV heroes and sci-fi pulp fiction, Jeepers Creepers’ edgy customised prints on textured tencel and base layers of mesh give a nod to the sartorial while transforming the warmer months into a relaxed kaleidoscope of summery cool. Creating cutting-edge fabrics is also part of the design process for the ever-progressive brand.

“We love creating our own fabrics, they totally identify NOM*d to our customers who enjoy the laid back, edgy style synonymous with our label,” says Robertson.

Add multiple possibility garments in the collection, including drill pinafores and utilitarian chic pants in cotton, viscose, linen and silk, and blend to create layers of hazy lightness and effortless street appeal. Pops of orange and yellow come courtesy of gingham and checkered plaid skirts, while Karloff-esque Nasty Young Ones tees, based on the smash 80s UK sitcom, and NOM*d-tweaked Dunedin tees reinforce black is, and will always be, the new black.

Cityscape takes an exclusive look behind the lens at what it takes to create a killer campaign during city fashion capital The Crossing’s spring/summer shoot Summer Loving.

The music is cranking when we arrive at legendary fashion photographer Stephen Tilley’s Auckland studio at 8:30am; Aretha Franklin passed overnight and out of R.E.S.P.E.C.T the Queen of Soul’s smooth-ashoney vocals are providing the soundtrack for the day’s shoot.

A celebration of long, sun-kissed summer days, hot nights and even hotter fashions, the Summer Loving theme pairs the country’s finest talents to rock the coming seasons’ fiercest looks from The Crossing’s fashion forward boutiques.

Working alongside Tilley are stylist extraordinaire and former Fashion Quarterly, Cleo and She fashion editor, Ana Macdonald,

NYX Professional Makeup’s national trainer Larissa De Lima, glamazon and Fashion Quarterly cover star Olivia Lefebre (62 Management) and drop-dead gorgeous multitasking Luke Stockman (Clyne Model Management), who’ll also pick up the camera to capture some behind-the-scenes shots.

Given the shoot falls at the end of winter, the team has opted for the climatic control afforded by Tilley’s studio where fashion chameleons Lefebre and Stockman effortlessly seduce the camera through 25 carefully orchestrated and cutting-edge looks in front of a series of must-have mouthwatering sorbet Colorama backdrops and a gnarly 65-kilogram prop of The Crossing logo created in Christchurch and freighted to the studio.

With two London Fashion Weeks under his belt, Tilley sets a cracking pace capturing the luminosity and flirtatious frivolity that The Crossing’s spring/

summer edit, Summer Loving, encapsulates. Injecting his own flavour of fun, Tilley brings a high-intensity spirit that puts the models immediately at ease, and translates to the stunning imagery captured.

Fuelled by caffeine and the shared quest to create a flawless fashion campaign, photographic assistant James Black checks the lighting equipment and manoeuvres it into the optimal position working all the best angles, while Emma Rouse keeps a close eye on which garments are worn throughout the shoot so each designer can be credited.

As the day draws to a close and the triumphant words “it’s a wrap!” are declared, the team has a glistening glow about them that speaks to the intensity and hard work of the day’s shoot, while the models remain enviably immaculate despite the day's rigors.

6:30am Wake up, pull on my gym clothes and grab my breakfast (oats, prepared the night before) and outfit for the day (I prepare all my outfits for the week on Sunday night, after consulting the weather forecast) and head to the gym.

7am Get the blood pumping with a Core Class followed by yoga for some zen to mentally prepare me for the day.

9:30am Arrive at work and grab a small cappuccino from Bally’s Tea Rooms and check out the Instagram feeds of Trelise Cooper, Kate Sylvester, Karen Walker and US celeb stylist June Ambrose (the woman behind Beyoncé, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow’s iconic looks) to see what’s trending while I eat my breakfast.

Super excited to see on our intranet that we’ll be welcoming Kiwi labels Georgia Alice and Maggie Marilyn later in the year.

9:45am Check emails, run through client appointments for the day and follow up on the prep I need to do for our upcoming Christmas magazine shoot and Ballantynes Fashion Week.

10am Catch up with our fab team to discuss themes for the upcoming shoot and Fashion Week, and check the proofs for our Spring/Summer magazine which is looking amazing.

10:30am Revisit the style boards I created for a client I worked with earlier in the week, then hit the Contemporary Lounge for a pre-shop to create key looks with matching accessories ahead of my first appointment in the Style Suite.

Having worked with this client last season, I know she’s going to just love our latest drops from Trelise Cooper and WORLD. 11am Time for a quick catch up with our resident beauty guru Ben Knox to discuss Ballantynes’ upcoming super-stylish fashion and beauty event.

11.30am First client arrives, we have a quick chat over a coffee about the exciting and beautiful pieces I’ve curated featuring her favourite designers, colours, cuts and styles all selected to make her look and feel fabulous. During her Your Style session we also discuss creating the best silhouettes to flatter her body shape and how these multitasking pieces can work in with her existing wardrobe.

1.30pm Take one ecstatic client to the register with some stunning new additions to her wardrobe, before a quick tidy of the Style Suite and grabbing lunch on the run – my favourite salad of the day from the team at Ello Café & Eatery.

2pm Meet with our key fashion buyers Kelley Stephenson (Womenswear) and Georgie Mears (Contemporary Lounge), along with our design team to lock in the looks

and themes for our upcoming Christmas magazine shoot and Ballantynes Fashion Week.

3pm I’m busy curating garments and accessories for the shoot when a regular client walks in with a fashion emergency – a swanky work event has slipped off her radar and something gorgeous is needed immediately. I race through the fashion departments collecting the latest from Juliette Hogan, COOP, Karen Walker and Kate Sylvester as I go.

I pair the winning metallic cocktail dress with some strappy heels, petite clutch and bold new lipstick for a head-turning look for the night.

4:30pm With the fashion crisis over, I start planning for tomorrow’s client appointments and preparing for the upcoming Christmas magazine shoot, compiling looks and exploring hair and make-up options and arranging backup outfits.

Cityscape takes the plunge with this season’s paint-box brights, power suits, oversized earrings, florals and aquatic-themed motifs with Ballantynes’ style guru Josie Pasane.

As the promise of warmer weather sets in it’s time to deliver a hit of colour to your wardrobe, and just as luck would have it a new colour code will soon be in town. This season sees the return of bolder shades with designers raiding the colour chart to bring us a collection of bold and bright paint-box colours. With everything from Kermit greens, zesty yellows, eye-popping fuchsias and cobalt blues taking centre stage, it’s tempting to think wearing head-to-toe brights might not seem wearable in real life, but it really is. The easiest way for the bold among us to embrace it is with this season’s power suit trend. You can pair a matching jacket and trousers with a clashing top and statement earrings. The more your earrings resemble those seen on Ab Fab’s Patsy Stone, the better. This is the jewellery trend that won’t go away anytime soon and is going to be even bigger for summer. Micro sunglasses will also be a popular statement piece this season. Ditch your oversized sunnies and swap them for smaller, sleek frames. Style tip: look for styles in cat-eye shapes to candy-coloured lenses for an instant accessories upgrade.

A

fter months of cooler weather the skin can start to look a little lacklustre and you may have noticed that certain nutrients often appear in skincare products for topical application.

I am a fan of supplying all of the cells inside the body with those nutrients so that they can be distributed where they need to go, including nourishing your skin.

Here are some of the top nutrients for glowing, luscious skin this spring: Vitamin C Vitamin C is involved in the production of collagen, the structural tissue found in the skin, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and

blood vessels. This superstar nutrient is also an antioxidant, making it highly effective at protecting against free radical damage, which can be caused by exposure to air pollutants and UV radiation.

Foods high in vitamin C include berries, capsicums, citrus fruits, kiwifruit, parsley and broccoli.

Vitamin E Similar to vitamin C, vitamin E is also an antioxidant, however it differs in that it is a fat-soluble vitamin (vitamin C is water-soluble).

Our cell membranes contain fatty acids, so vitamin E is critical for

protecting these cellular membranes against oxidative stress. Food sources of vitamin E include sunflower seeds, eggs, almonds, tahini (sesame seed paste) and avocados.

Zinc This essential mineral is an important component of healthy skin, especially for acne sufferers.

Whether you have a cut on your finger or the aftermath of a pimple on your chin, zinc is necessary for the skin involved in these traumas to heal, and it helps to prevent scar formation.

Polyphenols These are naturally occurring compounds with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These superstar substances are widely spread in plant foods, however some especially rich sources include tea, cacao, berries and grapes – particularly the seeds of these.

Vitamin A This fat-soluble vitamin is often associated with healthy vision, but it is also essential for healthy, vibrant, glowing skin.

The term ‘vitamin A’ makes it sound like this is just one vitamin called ‘vitamin A’, but that is not the case. Vitamin A actually covers a group of related nutrients, which can be divided into two categories: retinoids and carotenoids.

ot ones to follow the flock, the team behind CoLab believe the success of their buildings can be distilled down to a few key elements that are firmly rooted in simplicity. “We avoid complexity for complexity’s sake. We eliminate the noise and keep the emphasis on what’s relevant,” Tobin shares.

But what interests the pair most – above and beyond conforming to convention – is creating spaces that provoke. Whether it’s deemed ‘good’ or ‘bad’, Blair says if their work elicits a strong response and sparks dialogue, they’re satisfied.

By successfully marrying form and function, their visually powerful designs are

at once simple and sophisticated. Although CoLab is keen to avoid being typecast, there’s no doubt they have a distinctive style all of their own.

Referencing the local vernacular established by the likes of iconic Christchurch architects Miles Warren, Peter Bevan and Don Donnithorne, which prizes beautiful proportions, rich materiality and honest detailing, are also constants in CoLab’s work.

Permeating Christchurch’s collective architectural consciousness, these qualities form the foundation on which timelessness is built. Exposed structures, like their signature use of the gable form are another example of the ‘honesty’ they speak of, and are a CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Spring 18

conscious effort to pay homage to these architectural legends, they say.

Rather than hide imperfections, the duo say they prefer to expose the raw materials like timber or steel trusses and rafters, allowing the astute detailing of the craftsmanship to shine. This approach, of course, requires careful consideration, patience and perseverance to achieve, and involves “a lot of screwed up paper” to reach a satisfying resolution that will stand the test of time.

Although these design purists consider ‘trends’ to be a dirty word, they say there has definitely been an increased appetite for good design, an appreciation for handcrafted detailing, a move towards using metals like copper and brass, and a move away from designing on a grand scale in favour of compression, which opens the door to incorporating more detail.

The pair has also seen a renewed appreciation for mid-century style and the qualities that define this period, such as purpose-built joinery to highlight materials internally, the honesty of the construction with the likes of exposed rafters and fixings, and a

reverence for the artisan – all familiar strands that thread their way through CoLab’s work.

And how does their personal style show up in the design of their own homes? A contemporary take on the colonial workers’ cottage, Tobin’s own home is testament to his design ideals where his “mathematical, modular approach to design” is clearly evident in the considered use of space and restrained material palette.

Now with another baby on the way and the need to expand the footprint to meet the needs of his growing family, Tobin says he is already on the hunt for another project to sink his teeth into.

Meanwhile, Blair is constantly assimilating design ideas for his next home. Whether his design choices are informed by the modern functionality celebrated in the Bauhaus movement or inspired by the economy of natural materials and the detailed craftsmanship honoured by the Japanese – the governing principles always come back to CoLab’s overarching mantra, “simplicity, simplicity, simplicity.” colabarch.co.nz

roperty sales can hinge on so many factors, and the last thing anyone wants is to see a potential sale fall over due to a tiny, or series of tiny, details. To ensure things don’t come unstuck at the end, I’ve compiled the following to navigate any potential sales stumbling blocks.

Top of mind should always be cleanliness (people just don’t fall in love with cluttered or untidy houses!), which is why my number one rule is: make it sparkle! This means getting down to some serious cleaning of every surface inside, as well as tidying the yard to maximise street appeal. The appearance of your home is the first, and most important, impression on any potential buyer.

That being said, nothing is going to sell your house better online and in print listings than a series of

professional photos and video showing your property at its very best – this is one area where you can’t afford to not invest in.

I also make it a rule to never show an empty house and will often recommend home staging to really showcase the house as a spacious, warm and welcoming space. On colder days you want it to be toasty warm – if there’s a fire, start it in the morning to heat the house and have all heat pumps going.

Scented candles and diffusers also help to create a cosy atmosphere and calming house.

Living in post-quake Christchurch, it’s worth noting that it’s unlikely anyone is going to purchase a property in this current climate without it being thoroughly vetted by a builder. With this in mind, I always recommend obtaining a

builder’s report in advance. This will alert you to any potential items that may be a deal-breaker, as well as advising how to address them before going to market – it also removes one less hurdle for perspective buyers.

This is also your opportunity to rectify any neglected maintenance like repainting (or touching up) high-traffic areas and your porch and front door to increase curb appeal, replacing worn or broken knobs and handles, and upgrading lighting fixtures can freshen and add instant elegance to your abode.

During this time it’s also worthwhile getting your paperwork in order; think EQC assessment/ repairs and repair strategies and any details on running/maintaining your property and warranties.

Finally, don’t cut corners or skimp on marketing. You need to hit every avenue for marketing hard as you want your property to attract as many potential buyers as possible.

fter the long-haul flight from Christchurch, a blissful night’s sleep was high on our agenda, and some pampering at the über-stylish surrounds of Le Lapin Blanc (The White Rabbit) sets the scene for our fashion-focussed trip. The enchanting interiors aptly reflect its storybook reference.

Whimsical with an understated charm, it’s typically French, and the minimalist décor is punctuated with subtle pops of pastel, from the concierge desk to the boudoir, and the immaculate aesthetics are matched with exemplary service.

Following a restorative slumber in our sound-proof rooms, exquisite breakfast of fresh fruit, delicate pastries and a hard-hitting espresso, we’re raring to go. Stepping out into the fragrant spring air, we’re immediately captivated by the French capital’s effortless charm and beauty, and any lingering signs of jetlag quickly evaporate.

Spoilt for choice for where to head to first on foot from our hotel, the Latin Quarter is jam-packed with iconic Parisian sights. As we saunter down the main drag of Saint-Michel in the 5th arrondissement we soak up the age-old architecture and make a slight detour to see what’s playing at the Odéon Théâtre in case we decide to catch a play when the sun goes down.

Making a beeline for the majestic Palais du Luxembourg situated in the picturesque Jardin du Luxembourg for our much-awaited springtime-inParis-fix. Greeted by pretty-as-a-picture-postcard blossom trees, the Seine is not far, and no matter how often we visit Paris we’re always wowed by

the timeless grandeur of Notre-Dame and the more intimate, but equally magical Sainte-Chapelle.

On our way to the Métro station we stumble upon the famous Maison Georges Larnicol, and even though it’s still early in the day we can’t resist sampling their heaven-sent macarons and handmade chocolate. With a sugar high to fuel the rest of our morning we are keen to hit the boutiques and make the most of the worldfamous bi-annual sales and scoop a bargain.

We jump off the Métro at Concorde and take a leisurely stroll through the Jardins des Tuileries; the heady fragrance of blossoms hangs in the air, reminding us just how captivating Paris in springtime really is. Passing by the Louvre we spy the exhibition lineup and can’t resist a sneak peek at what’s on offer – after all, it’s not every day Hercules and Darth Vader appear side by side!

First up on our hit list is one of the city’s most historic department stores, Printemps, which is smack bang in the ‘golden triangle’ of Parisian fashion. We’re in awe of their diverse collection of luxury fashion, beauty, and homewares, alongside a tantalising array of swanky restaurants, cafés and brasseries all under the one roof.

We throw caution to the wind and indulge our insatiable appetite for Parisian fashion. And, given that we’ve carefully timed our trip to coincide with the those famous sales, we nab some drop-dead gorgeous pieces at a fraction of the original prices.

Before we move on to our next shopping destination we pay a visit to the roof top terrace café at Printemps (Galeries Lafayette also has one), where we drink in the breath-taking panoramic Maison Georges Larnicol city vistas that include a number of iconic Parisian landmarks in every direction – from the Eiffel Tower to the Sacré Coeur – between sips of Perrier Jouët.

The Champs-Élysées is of course another hotspot high on our fashion-focussed itinerary; a seemingly endless tree-lined avenue that plays host to all the world-leading brands and designers, from high street to haute couture.

TRAVEL Paris in Spring

Having exhausted ourselves, and nearing dinner time, we return to our hotel to freshen up and slip into our new Parisian garb for our much-anticipated booking at the inimitable Le Taillevent. We’d heard outstanding reports, and we were certainly not disappointed.

The elegant interior exudes elegance and sumptuous luxury, and this exquisite attention to detail and quality is mirrored in the immaculate service and presentation; we were suitably impressed with the panache with which the chef performed the art of guéridon – slicing and flambéing tableside. Satiated, this flamboyant dining experience was a fitting end to a sensational day.

On our second day we decide to book a private tour of ‘Bohemian Paris’ centred around the Latin Quarter and St Germain, with Urban Adventures.

Designed to take the visitor off the beaten track and reveal the city’s hidden gems, our local guide surprised us with some unexpected twists and turns along the way.

Winding our way through the Latin Quarter, we were taken down one of the oldest roads in Paris where the guillotine was invented, and on a lighter note, through the bustling flower market along the Seine and past street artist wares into an underground car park to see one of the last remaining parts of the original city walls.

As we were the only ones booked on this particular tour on the day, we had the luxury of changing the route, and our wonderfully engaging and personable guide Arthur went out of his way to throw in a few extras he thought we might enjoy, like the dreamy éclairs from the best patisserie in Paris.

When our time came to leave on the Eurostar for London, I reflect on our whirlwind weekend and how successfully we managed to strike the balance between luxury shopping and gastronomy, punctuated by history injections and artistic flurries.

The perfect European getaway, and well worth the 30-hour flight.

Backtracking to Oxford Street, South Molten Street makes a perfect segue to another one of London’s famed department stores, Fenwick, and then to Bond Street itself where you’ll find all the international heavy hitters in swanky Mayfair. Well when I was playing Edith Piaf on stage at the Piccadilly Theatre, in the Pam Gems play Piaf in 1993, I had to swear a lot and squat and pee in the first scene every night! I don’t think I’ve ever done anything else as quite ‘unlike’ a lady in my life! Ha ha … She was a great character to play though, one of my favourites, but it was a hugely taxing role. Not only did I have to grapple with her despair from the age of 15 through drugs, alcohol, the pain and angst of lost love, and the physical pain of a broken jaw and arthritis, leading to her premature death at 48 in 1963 – I had to die every night. Her lifestyle killed her. Playing her life every night nearly killed me!

Your stage career spans 54 years, what do you credit your longevity to? Diversifying. I like the challenge of doing different things. I’ve been in many stage musicals and plays, I like acting onstage, in TV and film, and presenting my own radio show.

I believe in being inquisitive and keeping one’s curiosity, surprising your audience … and yourself!

You were the original lead in Evita, what impact did that have on your career? It was the show that changed my life. I wouldn’t be here chatting with you if Eva Peron hadn’t been 5’2” … seriously, it was the role of a lifetime. When I first heard the concept album I knew I had to play her. I had already performed in several West End musicals, but when I won the role of Evita everything changed overnight. It was totally new, exciting and challenging. It not only changed my life, but it changed British musicals. Suddenly Broadway realised the Brits were a force to be reckoned with.

Tell us about your most memorable onstage experience?

It’s not an onstage experience, but it is one I’ll never forget. In 1988 we decided to record an album of songs of the rock band Queen.

Quite a gargantuan project, made even more so by the fact that we decided to do it with a symphony orchestra! The band were very excited by the idea, because at that time their music had never been covered before, and Freddie insisted on lending moral support by camping out at the studio all the time – we couldn’t keep him away!

One of the funniest moments was Freddie wanting to put his voice on my track of ‘My Melancholy Blues’. I said to him, “Freddie, it’ll be too high, it’s in my key!” And he said, “No, no dear, let me try it, I love all those strings.” Well, since he wrote the song, who was I to stop him?

One of my fondest memories of Freddie – hearing him sing ‘My Melancholy Blues’ in completely the wrong key! The result was extraordinary. It was amazing.

And what’s one you’d rather forget? A musical called Maybe That’s Your Problem. It was about premature ejaculation! Why write a

musical about it you may well ask?

All I can say is the problem was revealed at the beginning and it was all over in the first scene! It was the first time I worked with lyricist Don Black. One song he particularly liked was called ‘A Night To Remember’. For what, I wonder?

Alan Jay Lerner, who wrote My Fair Lady, Gigi, Brigadoon and Camelot, told Don the show should’ve been called Shortcomings! It closed after only 18 performances.

Tell us about your most proud moment. Receiving my OBE in 1995 from HM The Queen at Buckingham Palace with my parents by my side.

You can’t get better than that!

What are you looking forward to doing offstage when you are in Christchurch? I love New Zealand, it’s a beautiful country and always a pleasure to visit and I can’t wait to be there again. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing the resurgence of the new Christchurch – always a favourite place for me to perform.
