1960s: A pioneering spirit

Société d’Outillage et de Mécanique de Faucigny (Mechanical Tooling Company of Faucigny) took shape between 1960 to 1967. The company changed the name to SOMFY in 1963 and became a limited company. In Cluses, at the foot of Mont Blanc, Somfy develops the first tubular motor, marking the end of crank handle and ushering in electric roller shutters, screens, awnings and blinds. Our story begins in France, Germany and Sweden, where the company already has subsidiaries. The adventure has begun!

1970s: Expansion

With dedication and experimental spirit, Somfy overcomes many technological challenges and “gives birth” to the LS70, 60, 50 family. It is also the time to look out for international expansion.

1981: Home automation begins

Somfy launches ‘Somfy-matic’, the first weather controlled awnings and shutters; capable of sensing weather conditions and automatically adjusting awnings and shutters appropriately.

1989: Tonight, Somfy is on TV!

Somfy's first television campaign is broadcast at prime time in France. By 2005, the campaigns become international. Somfy goes from being a brand reserved for professionals to an end-user brand.

1997: Long live radio!

Somfy integrates radio technology into its motors. Thanks to RTS (Somfy Radio Technology), roller shutters, screens, awnings and blinds can now be operated using a remote control. An additional advantage of radio technology is that a single remote can be used to control multiple products.

2000-2001: From roller shutters... to the whole house

The brand begins to motorise garage doors and gates. It also acquires the company, Domis, a designer of wireless alarm systems. At the dawn of the new millennium, Somfy products are able to control all openings in the home as well as its security.

2010 :Controlling your home is easy with TaHoma!

100% cloud, 100% radio, 100% open: the TaHoma interface allows control from any smart devices or computers.

2015: Quiet, smart motors

The latest generation of motors for roller shutters arrives on the market. Smart, quiet and eco-friendly.

2017: WireFreeTM battery operated motor

WireFreeTM technology brings true peace of mind and home comfort accessible.

2018: “So Open with Somfy”

Heating, light, music and virtual assistants... Somfy expands its partnership program to enrich the connected home experience. In June, the brand opens its APIs to developers for even more freedom.

2019: Happy 50th anniversary

Having celebrated our 50th anniversary, Somfy continues with the innovation journey to inspire a better way of living that is accessible to all.

2020: Connected Devices

More than 8 millions of products have been connected through our home automation boxes, worldwide.
