Somerville House Foundation Impact Report 2023

Page 1

Message from the Foundation Chair

As Chair of the Somerville House Foundation, I would like to thank all of our generous donors for your wonderful support in 2023. This report captures your meaningful contributions and enables us to reflect on the impact of your generous giving. From granting talented students the opportunity to realise their potential at Somerville House through to enhancing the School’s learning and sporting facilities, your investment in girls’ education is an investment in the future of society.

In 2023, 647 donors across our dedicated community collectively raised $1,008,033 over the course of the year, all directed towards enhancing the educational journey of today’s and future generations of Somerville House students.

Your generosity in providing lifechanging educational opportunities is no better demonstrated than through your unwavering support for scholarships. The annual Foundation Lunch in May 2023 exemplified this support, raising an impressive $149,941 in a single afternoon.

The Foundation sadly received the news of the passing of much celebrated Somerville House Old Girl, Dr Jill Mellick (Class of 1965), in late 2022. Jill’s wish to give back to her alma mater was reflected in her Will through a bequest to support means tested scholarships at Somerville House. Through Jill’s legacy, a new scholarship will soon be established in her name, providing opportunities for financially disadvantaged students to attend Somerville House. Jill’s generosity demonstrates to us the power philanthropy plays in helping people connect their giving to their own personal values, and in creating a lifelong legacy.

Recognising the significance of outstanding facilities in nurturing student growth, the Foundation’s 'Building Tomorrow Together' campaign garnered impressive support. Through the purchase of commemorative bricks and plaques, alongside voluntary contributions, the community contributed $303,000 towards the School's building fund. This investment paves the way for a conducive learning environment that fosters excellence in education.

In 2023, the Foundation welcomed your continued support for the School’s world-class sporting hub, SomerFields, with a successful Golf Day at Nudgee Golf Course raising $33,000 for essential sporting equipment.

In addition to financial support, the Foundation deeply appreciates those in our community who gave back through mentorship and expertise. The Dr Lorna Archibald medical networking event provided a platform for medical professionals and Old Girls studying medicine to generously share their time and advice with senior students.

The 2023 Impact Report offers an opportunity for reflection on the lives touched and the futures shaped through your collective actions. Each scholarship awarded, each brick laid, and each mentorship opportunity seized represents a ripple effect of positive change within our community and beyond. Together, we continue to build a legacy of impact that resonates across generations, enriching the landscape of education for years to come.

On behalf of the Somerville House Foundation Board, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all of you who supported the Foundation in 2023 and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together in 2024.

Building Funds

SomerFields

SomerFields, located on Dunn Road, Rocklea, is a stateof-the-art, multi-million sporting and recreational facility benefiting students from all over Queensland.

Spread over 15.4 hectares of land, just 10.2 km from the School, the newly developed precinct features six ovals, ten multipurpose courts and a 400m, 8 lane grass track with areas for throws and jumps. The precinct accommodates athletics, cricket, hockey, football, netball, softball, touch and tennis training and competition.

Multipurpose facilities are planned for the future, which will provide a hub for support groups and clubs to host co-curricular events, meetings and functions.

Building Tomorrow Together

In 2021, the ‘Heritage Heart’ project was initiated, which on completion, will see the meticulous restoration to several historically significant buildings including Fewings, Cumbooquepa, Chambers, and the Chapel. This initiative signifies a commitment to preserving the rich heritage that defines the essence of our cherished School.

Upon the launch of the Heritage Heart plans, the community was extended a warm invitation to contribute to this cause through the 'Building Tomorrow Together' campaign. This initiative allowed individuals to make a financial contribution and, in return, immortalise their support by having their names engraved on a commemorative brick or plaque, placed on the Fewings Verandah.

The ‘Building Tomorrow Together’ campaign was complimented by the generosity of current Somerville House parents through the Voluntary Contribution program, to amass a total of $303,500 raised in support of the School’s building fund in 2023.

We extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the families who contributed towards supporting the Somerville House building fund.

2023 Foundation Lunch

The annual Foundation Lunch held in May 2023 saw guests coming together to raise $149,941 in one afternoon. All funds raised are directed to lifechanging educational opportunities for girls through scholarships named in honour of Dr Russell Bird and Mrs Elizabeth Gilchrist AM, and the new established Rural and Regional Scholarship in memory of Kate Benjamin.

Creating a Legacy through Planned Giving

We sadly received the news of the passing of much celebrated Somerville House Old Girl, Dr Jill Mellick (Class of 1965), in late 2022. Before Jill’s passing, she met with representatives of the Somerville House Foundation to express her wish to create a legacy through her Will. Jill’s generous bequest will be used to establish a new scholarship in her name, aimed at providing the opportunity of a Somerville House education to a daughter of a first-generation parent.

Sports Fund

For the first time since 2017 the Somerville House Foundation was delighted to host a Foundation Golf Day on Friday 4 August.

90 players from the Somerville House Community descended upon the course at Nudgee Golf Course for what was a glorious day out.

A total of $33,000.00 was raised on the day through the generosity of our corporate sponsors JMAC, Laurel Group, Lexus Brisbane Group, T-Matters, AxiChem, Bidfood and the PMSA, with the raffle and auction prizes, generously supported by many in our local business community. Proceeds from this event went towards supporting the Director of Sport, Andrew McCabe, in his quest to offer world class sporting facilities at SomerFields, through the purchase of sports equipment.
