COMMUNITY members fearing their houses could be resumed to make way for a proposed Bruce Highway Western Alternative (BHWA) route have finally been granted a meeting with State Transport Minister Bart Mellish.

The meeting, to be held on February 23, follows an extensive grassroots

campaign that galvanised thousands of residents, with a petition of nearly 11,000 signatures having been tabled in parliament last week.

The proposed routes travel through East Caboolture, Moodlu and Elimbah before intersecting with Steve Irwin Way south of Beerburrum.

Lead petitioner, Jason Smith, said he was pleased that after

months of lobbying, two representatives from BHWA opposition group had secured a meeting with Mr Mellish, TMR Regional Director, Scott Whitaker, and Member for Pumicestone, Ali King.

“It is the intention of the working group to represent directly to the minister the impact that the proposed routes have,” he said.

“It is to advocate for

TMR to come back with an alternative, which minimises impact on the community, places sustainable public transport and upgrades of current infrastructure well before the construction of new highways.”

Mr Smith said, while the support was incredible, the achievements to date were just the first steps of a marathon.

The Second National Action Plan identifies and determines the most significant and transformational actions to reduce the impacts of disasters on all Australians.

News in brief Cops investigate after woman shot entering car QUEENSLAND Police are investigating after a woman was reportedly injured in Dakabin on Monday night, February 19.

Initial investigations indicate just after 8pm, the 24-year-old Raceview woman was entering a vehicle when a man approached and fired a weapon at her.

The man then fled the area in an unknown vehicle.

The woman was transported to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound to her upper leg. The injury is considered non-life threatening.

Investigations into a possible relationship between the parties are being conducted.

The upgrades also position the region to capitalise on its proximity to Brisbane and coastal tourism destinations and tap into tourism opportunities associated with the 2032 Olympic Games.

The project has seen new pathways, trailheads, solar lighting, shelters, signage and turfing added along the trail in Esk, Toogoolawah, Lowood, and Fernvale.

The Mountain to Mountain connection upgrade has also enhanced tourism and recreation links between Mount Glen Rock and Blanks Mountain.

Alongside the new infrastructure, clearing works conducted as part of the upgrades have improved community safety by enhancing fire breaks and mitigating the risk of future bushfires.

The Queensland and Australian Governments invested more than $2.6 million in this project through the joint Commonwealth and Queensland Government Local Economic Recovery Program.

Condensery to feature significant artist THE Condensery will take centre stage in Queensland’s vibrant arts and cultural scene, with an upcoming exhibition and performance featuring the works of Lionel Fogarty, one of Australia’s most significant living poets, artists, and activists.

The exhibition is part of the Queensland Government’s substantial investment of over $1.2m,

supporting 21 diverse projects across the state.

As a key recipient within the latest round of the Queensland Arts Showcase Program (QASP), the Condensery ’s initiative is one of many projects under the QASP umbrella, which spans various art forms, including new music, musical theatre, literature, and visual arts.

Other projects will allow First Nations editors to commission, develop, publish, and promote new works by First Nations writers.

Arts Minister, Leeanne Enoch, highlighted the significance of the investment.

“We fully expect TMR to come back with either an alternative route for feedback or to inform us of a final route decision in order that they can protect a future transport corridor.

“In protecting a corridor, it will place an undue burden on those impacted, with the only option to be applying for early resumption or wait decades until resumption occurs.”

Mr Smith said the acceptance of growth and progress was inevitable, but minimising the impact required a strong and selfless community, and the overwhelming majority understood that the proposed routes threatened the fabric of the local community.

“I am proud to be part of a selfless community that, when challenged, stands together to minimise impact, advocates for and supports any of its members that are impacted,” Mr Smith said.

“We will not accept a route that does not minimise impact, when that route is forced upon the community.

“We will support and advocate for those impacted, utilising community donated funds for legal and professional services, as well as people power.”

On Tuesday, February 13, Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, officially tabled the combined written and e-petition that garnered 10,801 signatures.

That evening, Mr Powell highlighted the outstanding community cohesion

displayed by the Jason Smith and Andrew Powell communities of Moodlu, Caboolture East, and Elimbah in voicing their unified opposition to the proposed Bruce Highway Western Alternative Stage 4 in a speech to parliament.

In his speech, Mr Powell urged ministers and government officials to recognise the vital importance of engaging with local communities in long-term state planning processes.

Flash flooding cuts roads, closes schools MORETON Bay was hit with another massive and unexpected rainfall on Friday, February 16, flooding multiple areas of the city again, leading to over 70 road closures throughout the day.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the heavy rain was not predicted by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) and resulted in City of Moreton Bay Disaster Management teams and Council staff being active since 3am,

areas impacted by the new floods is Beachmere Rd, which has remained closed since January, due to flood damages, and was now flooded once again.

Buckle in Woodford!

THE much-anticipated Woodford Rodeo 2024 is back this Saturday, February 24, introducing a mullet competition with the proceeds going to the Jackson Hepner Foundation.

The rodeo will also introduce a ute competition alongside traditional bull riding, saddle riding, bareback riding, barrel racing and steer wrestling.

This year’s event will also have a new layout allowing for a more open and freeflowing space. The entire event arena will be a liquorlicensed space, meaning guests won’t be restricted to

consuming alcohol in specific locations. Ute and camping entries will be allowed from 12pm, with gates opening for the general public at 2pm, at the Woodford Showgrounds.

The rodeo will begin at 3pm.

This is the first Woodford Rodeo in four years and promises loads of fun with food stalls, bars and DJ Richter hosting the after party. No BYO alcohol permitted and children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

THE first community for the new city of Waraba, Lilywood Landings, is starting to take shape, with the first completed lots expected to be registered later this year and the first homes starting construction before the end of the year.

The experienced national contracting group BMD Urban has been announced as the civil contractor to deliver the first stages of land at Lilywood Landings, following the first sod-turning event earlier this month.

Lennium Group Development Manager Ian Worthington said BMD had wasted no time getting started on civil works at Lilywood Landings.

“After many years of careful planning and preparation, we are delighted to see our contractor now mobilised on site and starting the job of bringing our vision for this community to life,” he said.

“This includes the construction of the vital

infrastructure needed, not only for Lilywood Landings, but for the whole of the Waraba.”

It stated TMR had received over 800 community submissions – what a fantastic effort from all involved. They also said that all feedback will now be considered to inform next steps, revised project timelines and further technical investigations needed. This includes consideration of suggestions for alternate corridor alignments. TMR claim they will keep the community informed of early planning for Stage 4 and provide an update on consultation outcomes and next steps once feedback has been considered. Rest assured, if they won’t, I will.

EPILEPSY Action Australia introduces the Ted-E-Bear Connection program, a supportive initiative for children with epilepsy and their families in Moreton Bay. This program offers free social and emotional support, providing comfort during difficult times.

Children enrolled in the program receive a soft teddy bear, serving as a source of solace during distressing moments such as seizures, hospital stays, and medical tests. Additionally, the

Ted-E-Bear packs include educational activity packs for children up to age 12.

To further aid parents, the program offers various resources, including a Facebook peer-support group moderated by specialist epilepsy registered nurses, an online workshop on seizure safety and first-aid, and personalized advice through video calls, phone calls, and emails.

Carol Ireland, CEO of Epilepsy Action Australia, highlights the program’s

significance, addressing the challenges children with epilepsy may face, including anxiety, depression, social isolation, and loneliness.

Registration for the TedE-Bear Program is open to children with epilepsy and their families in Redcliffe, Pine Rivers, Caboolture, and Bribie Island.

BRIBIE Island experienced a massive landscape change last weekend with Welsby Lagoon, Mermaid Lagoon and Norfolk Creek all breaking through sand barriers.

These were a direct result of Friday’s deluge, which caused floods across Moreton Bay, along with the previous heavy rainfalls experienced this year.

According to a Department of Environment, Science and Innovation spokesperson, this is a natural process that occurs after periods of heavy rainfall “We are aware of community reports of

people digging near Norfolk Creek, however a washout was imminent, regardless of human interference, as water had already started to top the natural barrier,” the spokesperson said.

“Members of the public are reminded not to disturb the island’s beach and coastline as this can be dangerous and these areas are protected.

“Deep washouts are likely

around all the lagoons with conditions changing on a tidal basis.”

The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation expects Freshwater Creek to also break through over the coming days, advising beach goers to travel one hour either side of low tide, and to use caution when travelling along the open beach.

COMMUNITY BBQ events are set to become a monthly feature at the Wamuran Sports Complex Hall, following the inaugural BBQ event arranged by the Wamuran Lions Club.

More than 130 people attended this inaugural event at the Wamuran Sports Complex Hall, on the night of Friday February 9.

People enjoyed eating, socialising, and watching the Wamuran Little Athletics Club in action.

Encouraged by the community response and feedback, the Wamuran

Lions Club decided at a follow-up meeting to schedule community BBQs on the first Friday of each month.

This will somewhat resemble a former ritual in Wamuran, when monthly Friday dinners were held courtesy of the now-defunct Wamuran Sporting Association.

Wamuran Lions Club president Brian McAtee said this former ritual was the inspiration for the February 9 event.

The next community BBQ in Wamuran will be on March 1 – again from 5pm to 8pm – with a similar format to February 9, while the menu has a couple of extra items.

Mr McAtee said the atmosphere was “very casual and friendly, with heaps of smiles”.

“It was designed as a ‘meet your neighbour’, and so there was plenty of conversation and a meat tray and fruit and

veggie tray raffle, thanks to Wamuran Butcher and Green Haven,” he said.

Mr McAtee said the event turned out “exactly how we wanted it to happen”, as the aim was to bring people together in a social setting and generate community spirit.

He also said it was great to see City of Moreton Bay Division 12 council candidates Tony Latter and Adrian Raedel attending and mingling with the crowd, assisting the club in different ways.

“It was good that State Member, Andrew Powell, also took time to acknowledge that the Lions are doing something very positive for the community of Wamuran,” Mr McAtee said.

Fake email referred to authorities

Grants to help prevent elderly becoming socially isolated ● SOMERSET ORGANISATIONS across Queensland are invited to apply for a share of an extra $2.5m each year from July 1, in grants aimed at preventing older Queenslanders from becoming socially isolated.

The grant funding is in addition to the Queensland Government’s existing $4.1m annual investment in 42 Seniors Social Isolation Prevention Services, which connect older people to each other and to their community. Older Queenslanders can be more vulnerable to isolation because of mobility and

health issues, loss of friends and family, living alone or restricted income. The grant funding will be used to increase the footprint of Seniors Social Isolation Services across the state, as well as to establish a peak body to support those services and provide advice on the effectiveness of services and other issues.

The services will reach out to those experiencing social isolation or at risk, including those living in regional and remote areas, and encourage them to engage in activities to improve their quality of life and social connection.

THE contents of a fake email claiming to be from Somerset Regional Council, which attacked the credibility of a sitting councillor, have been referred to the Office of the Independent Assessor.

The email, using council branding, alleged inappropriate conduct of councillor Kylee Isidro.

“This email was not written or circulated

by Council,” a Council statement read.

Despite this, Council stated that “to the extent that the allegations in

that email are about the inappropriate conduct of a councillor, Council’s CEO has referred those allegations (as he is obliged to do by section 150P of the Local Government Act) to the Office of the Independent Assessor.”

Cr Isidro responded to the fake email, saying this was the latest attack across months of cowardly abuse and anonymous victimisation.

“Over the course of almost six months I have been subjected to victimisation by anonymous sources,” she stated in response.

“While I understand

that anonymous sources can sometimes serve an important role… it is equally important to consider the potential harm they can cause when used irresponsibly or maliciously.

“I will not be deterred by baseless attacks or attempts to undermine my credibility.”

Cr Isidro urged people to look beyond rumours and innuendo, adding she remained committed to serving the community.

“I encourage you, as residents, to remain vigilant and critical thinkers when faced with anonymous sources or rumours,” she wrote.

“Anonymous sources can spread misinformation, sow discord, and damage reputations without any accountability. It is disheartening to witness the negative impact this can have on the democratic process and the well-being of our community.

“Your trust and confidence in me as a candidate for the local government elections in Somerset means the world to me. Together, we can rise above anonymous bullying and focus on building a stronger, united, and prosperous community.”

Council said it would not comment further.

Wild weather can’t dampen first birthday for Pumicestone club

ABOUT 100 guests from across the Moreton Bay region braved some wild weather at Sylvan Beach Esplanade on Saturday, February 10, as the Dragon Boat Pumicestone club celebrated its first birthday.

With the club growing from 22 to 94 members in one year, the club’s president Michelle Hanton said the birthday event was highly successful as it demonstrated the strength of the membership and the community support.

Twelve individuals arrived by 10am for the comeand-try session, but the high winds and high tide conditions resulted in the session taking place on dry land rather than the water.

Safety aspects were taught, in addition to the basics of stroke technique and commands.

“The smiling faces of attendees attest to the fun they had, and several have already signed up for a Dragon Pass, which provides them with a free 28-day trial,” Michelle said.

I feel so welcomed into a group of amazing people led by the most inspirational leader Janet Johns Following the blustery and rainy start to the day, Michelle said the rain had eased by 10am before the sun fortunately came out by 11.30am for the official celebrations.

THE improvement on rural parks is set to continue, with Councillor Tony Latter announcing new parks and upgrades coming to Elimbah, Wamuran and Morayfield.

Morris Park in Elimbah is set to start construction of its new ninja course in March.

The course will resemble the ninja course in Burpengary, with some minor variations.

Wamuran’s Rangeview Park is also scheduled for an upgrade, with construction set to begin in July. The upgrade will include new shade sails, a new play tower, new swing set, new rubber softfall and improvements to the landscape and footpaths.

All existing trees and park assets will be retained and protected during construction.

A new District Park is also planned for Wamuran, adjacent to the sports ground in the H&J Walters Recreational Reserve.

Council released a concept for the new park, which would include a dog park, skate and BMX park, toilets, district level playground, new car park, fitness and exercise node, shelter and BBQ areas, and footpath connections.

Lastly, construction of Morayfield’s new Lakeview Park is set to begin in March.

The new park will include playground equipment, a shade sail, new benches and new shade trees.

25-year milestone for ride ONE of southeast Queensland’s favourite charity bike rides, the Heritage Karalee Ipswich100, is returning on Sunday March 24.

The ride is an initiative of the Brisbane West Lions Club, in association with the Ipswich Hospital Foundation.

This year marks the 25th year of the ride in Ipswich and the Scenic Rim region, with cyclists coming from far and wide to take part in this historic event.

Club is thrilled to have the ride’s new naming sponsor ‘Heritage Karalee’ on board and continued partnership with major beneficiary Ipswich Hospital Foundation.

Online registrations offer cyclists three routes, from a challenging Imperial 100 mile (160km) to 100km and 50km rides.

Riders start and finish at Ipswich’s picturesque University of Southern Queensland campus and pass through farming land and bushland of the Scenic

Rim, with spectacular views to the Great Divide and Cunninghams Gap. Past participants Mark and Dana of Newtown were rather new to cycling when they first signed up for Ipswich100.

After the ride, they said “it was wonderful, one of the best we’ve been on, very organised, very safe, and lots of stops along the way which was fantastic, a lot of encouragement from other riders and the SES volunteers”.

WELL-KNOWN artists such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Cold Chisel, Patsy Cline and Dr Hook were some of the inspirations for our very talented walk-up artists and band members last Thursday.

Regular performers filled a varied program with their usual flair and included Kiwi and Montana, Carmel, Fay, Richard, and Chrissy to name a few.

Our next theme night will be on February 29, and we will celebrate film and stage musicals. A lot of scope

there, so we look forward to an enthusiastic response.

Henry Somerset A landlord’s lament I JUST sold the unit I had rented out.

The tenant, who’d been there for more than two years was excellent, enjoying the small unit and keeping it neat and tidy.

Which is better than some landlords who have been left with damaged, even trashed, properties.

In response, I’d kept the rent increases at the lowest level that the real estate agents recommended.

But, as someone relying on the rental income for retirement, the financials just didn’t make sense.

Despite holding the unit for a decade (so not bought at the market highs) and with little debt, the returns struggled to get much past 2 percent when all the costs were

factored in.

And most of those costs are government related.

Rates and water charges have gone up at least 50 percent more than inflation.

There’s a higher level of council rates for rental properties - so renters are

penalised.

As a body corporate, we looked at putting in solar to reduce renters’ electricity costs.

But the costs were prohibitive on even a modest multi unit building - and organising a fair split of

These are just some sad, tragic facts exposed by a Grattan Institute study, which found current methods of teaching reading should be banned.

Why? According to Grattan, “The reason most of those students can’t read well enough is that we aren’t teaching them well enough.”

Really? That really is a “dur moment” for me.

(The Urban Dictionary says “dur” is a word used by those who haven’t the slightest idea on what to say in either the awkward moments in life or the WTF moments. That’s me in that instance.)

But let’s look at a few more facts. The failed “whole language” approach, which is based on the idea that reading is an easy, natural process, is dangerously and fatally flawed.

It has killed the ability to read

properly for huge numbers, in generations of children.

It started in the “progressive” 1970s Whitlam era, but every government since then — red, blue, greenish/red, the lot — are to blame. They literally have blood on their hands.

Another damning fact is that it took the Grattan Institute five decades to wake up to this fact, when morons like me, and intelligent people like you, have been saying it for decades. But at least they awoke.

For some reason, my mind dug deep into the memory bank and produced a Slim Dusty song from the mid-60s.

It was about an Aboriginal ringer who drank from a poisoned waterhole, complete with warning signs, during a drought, and included the lines: “Sometimes I think how sad it is in this world with all its might,/That a man like Trumby met his death because he couldn’t read or write.”

Maybe I’m being a bit melodramatic, and maybe children these days are not facing life and death situations because they can’t read properly, but it illustrates the possible dangers.

Reading instructions on medicine and pill bottles springs to mind. And lesser

record highs in these regional markets.

The remaining capitals saw relatively flat conditions.

Interestingly, regional markets are exhibiting a stronger growth trend compared to their urban counterparts.

Over the past quarter, the combined regional index saw a 1.2% rise, outpacing the 1% increase in the combined capitals index. Internal migration continued its trend away from capital cities toward regional areas for the 21st year in a row.

In Queensland it seems, there’s still a willingness to pay a premium for detached

requirements that require regular checks, which add extra costs.

So in the end, unless the owner can see a big capital gain (subject to federal Capital Gains Tax), the low year on year income return cannot justify the investment. And that’s important for small investors relying on returns for their retirement income.

And that Capital Gain is now in the sights of the Tax Office and economists who say property should carry much more of the country’s tax burden.

That might be an impressive academic argument in Canberra and economists’ echo chambers, but it scares Mum and Dad investors in rental properties.

By comparison, the public company share and debt markets are free of most federal and state taxes because economists argue they must be ‘internationally competitive’.

situations like reading recipes, driving directions, and beach/ surf conditions. They are all important, and things we simply take for granted.

How can such an advanced nation be so dumb?

This comedy duo had everyone rolling in the aisles when they announced a $3.1 billion plan to build, on average, six social houses per day for the next 22 years.

They don’t know how they can do it or when they can do it. And while they know they can’t do it, but they have a cunning plan, and that’s all you need in an election year.

Details contained in the cunning plan will be made public when someone dreams them up.

Just briefly Cop that! The Miles Government has belted young crims with new laws that make it illegal to sell knives to juveniles. I wonder if these young thugs just keep stealing them.

What’s with this trend of using body wash instead of soap? I used some recently. It was like rubbing myself with a mixture of fine river sand and sweet smelling engine oil.

WEASEY’S PROPERTY REPORT DESPITE a surge in early season listings, the weekend saw another round of generally strong auction results, with robust clearance rates.

The upward trajectory of Australia’s housing market persisted through January 2024, as evidenced

by CoreLogic’s National Home Value Index, which reports the 12th consecutive monthly increase. As always, the devil is in the detail: Melbourne, Hobart, and the ACT experienced slight declines, while Perth, Adelaide, and Brisbane continued their ascent, with dwelling values reaching

savings/costs with a multitude of renters and owner occupiers became impossible.

And one renter wanted an electric car charger paid for by the owner, which also became impossible.

Then there’s the Valuer General racking up much higher valuations, which not only increases rates, but also pushes owners into state government Land Tax. Add in insurance costs up two and three times inflation, despite zero claims in two decades, and units well built and well above flood level, and straws are starting to burden the owner returns to minimal.

Of course we have to also add in Body Corporate fees, which have also jumped as the state government adds various

homes, though the pace of value appreciation appears to be easing.

January saw an increase in the median selling time for homes in regional Australia, now standing at 44 days.

House values continued to outpace unit values, with the median capital city house experiencing a record 45.2% higher value than units. This gap reflects house values gaining more than three times the capital appreciation of units since the onset of the pandemic.

Despite ongoing growth, new dwelling approvals remain below the previous decade’s average.

You are probably not very sympathetic to this landlord’s lament.

But even renters should be concerned, as much of their rent rises are not from greedy landlords, but from sneaky, well above inflation rises in various government fees and charges.

Every politician has a very serious comment to make about the ‘housing crisis’.

It’s about time they recognise their significant role is pushing up your housing costs and rents.

Why have a government if it all boils down to opinion polls? Why not just have a bank of robots in which the results of the polls are fed and that information is acted on by another bunch of robots?

Caboolture Darts JENNY and Josh were the winners, as 16 players took part in pot luck doubles at Caboolture Social Darts Club on Monday night.

A four-way play-off was needed to determine second place, with Sid and Matthew taking out the prize.

Kylie won the ladies high score, while Matty won the men’s high score.

Pegs went to Dale on 63 and Sherrie on 40. Matthew had a 72 peg, and Ian had a 56.

There were good shots from Jenny (126), Matthew (114), Ian and Max (105).

Sport Hoping for better weather THE Caboolture Snakes women’s cricket teams are waiting to see if the weather will allow them to play in grand finals on Sunday, following a stack of washed-out fixtures since Christmas.

Most of the Tier 1 women’s contests have been cancelled since Christmas, including all five of Caboolture’s fixtures, although one of those comprised two overs of play.

Having finished on top of the Tier 1 ladder, Caboolture is slated to host the secondplaced Cooroy Eumundi Cougars, at Caboolture Cricket Club on Sunday.

Last Sunday, Caboolture was scheduled to host the fourth-placed Coolum Sharkettes in a semi-final.

The Cougars have played one full game this year, back on January 21 when they beat Caloundra convincingly.

In Tier 2, the Maroochydore Swans and the Snakes finished level on competition points, while one extra win enabled Maroochydore to earn top spot.

All five fixtures for the Snakes and Swans have been abandoned in the New Year, although one of Maroochydore’s matches contained two overs.

Weather permitting, the top two Tier 2 teams will also square off at Caboolture Cricket Club on Sunday.

Rain ruins Snakes in decider TEWANTIN NOOSA was named the winner of the Sunshine Coast men’s one-day cricket competition, after wet conditions forced the grand final to be cancelled.

The Caboolture Snakes were set to contest Tewantin Noosa at the Tewantin-based Read Park, after Caboolture finished second on the ladder, but the abandonment meant the top-placed team was awarded the title.

The grand final was originally scheduled for Sunday February 11, while the reserve day was the following Sunday, but wet weather prevented any play on the two days.

KILCOY Hammers softballer Cody Eldridge won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, as he was part of Queensland’s title-winning team in last month’s U18 men’s national championships in Mirrabooka, Perth.

After losing their opening match 14-2 against the host state, the Maroons were invincible thereafter, as they won 13 games on the trot to take out the Nox Bailey Shield.

“I think that all the (Queensland) players were just nervous coming into the tournament,” Cody said of the hefty first-up defeat.

“After the first game, you can see all the players felt more comfortable and confident.”

The Maroons beat South Australia, Victoria and NSW three times each, and defeated Western Australia twice in the round-robin series, before overcoming the home side twice more in the finals.

Queensland’s wins against Western Australia became bigger with each contest, as the Maroons won 17-15 and 8-1 on day three, before winning the semi-final

10-2 and then winning the decider 15-0.

Queensland had a tight 7-6 win over Victoria on day one, but the Maroons dominated otherwise as scores included 11-3, 10-0, 14-4, 20-7 and 15-3.

Cody made an impact with the bat and in the field, having played in the outfield and at short stop.

Cody said it felt good to win the MVP award, while this achievement was one of the best things he’d done in his softball career.

“The biggest key (to Queensland’s success) was all of the players, coaches and staff got along with each other,” he said.

“I have played with many of my teammates over my softball career, whether it be school sports or club sports.”

Cody had represented Queensland in primary school sports at the age of 12, and said he hoped to represent the state again, with U23 the next age group.

Having played for the Hammers in winter since the age of five, Cody has also played summer softball for the Caboolture-based Warriors, Redcliffe-based Cougars and Redlandsbased Sharks.

The Caboolture touch football team, named It’s Just Touch, Touch, finished runner-up in the Social Mixed division in the Bundaberg Cup.

in the Bundaberg Cup, playing at the Bundabergbased Greg Duncan Fields from February 2 to 4.

In addition to the Social Mixed division, there were

U12 and U14 boys and girls divisions, as well as U16 boys, Open Mixed, Social Men’s and Social Women’s, as teams came from across Queensland for the touch

football tournament.

It’s Just Touch was in Pool B, as there were four pools with five teams in each. The Caboolture team won all four of its round-robin games, while a Pool A team and a Pool C team did likewise.

It’s Just Touch began with a 3-1 win against the Coolum Bluefins, and followed up with a 5-0 win against Kawana and an 8-3 victory over the Raiders on the same day.

The Caboolture team trounced Maryborough White 7-0 the next day, before beating QNZLDer 6-4 in a quarter-final and then winning a semi-final 3-1 against No Chance.

It’s Just Touch opposed undefeated Pool A team Ankle Bullies in the decider, with the Pool A team prevailing 5-3.

Caboolture Touch Association president Lloyd Celere said, “It’s Just Touch is an amazing example of how social teams can enjoy the game of touch football in well organised events with their friends.

“Caboolture Touch is extremely proud of this group’s efforts at Bundy Cup.”

Kilcoy races this Thursday THE Kilcoy Race Club is ready for a big day out this Thursday, as the ‘$1000 Pick the Card Thursday’ race day takes place.

Following 78mm of rain last weekend, the track was rated a Soft 7, while there were 162 nominations for the day.

Entry will be free, with Kilcoy Race Club chairperson Con Searle saying there would be great racing and country hospitality enjoyment.

Nine races are likely, with the first at 12.48pm.

BURPENGARY resident and Caboolture Comets softballer Jaiden Holly played in the Queensland team, which recently continued its winning streak in the U23 men’s championships.

It was the first time Jaiden took part in this U23

tournament, having played in the Queensland team, which won the U19 men’s championships in Brisbane, back in 2017.

“This year was a lot more involving for myself than the year I played 19s, as I was the oldest player in the team (this year), so I had more relying on me to play better,”

he said.

Queensland’s U23s won the Laing Harrow Shield in Brisbane from 2017 to 2019, before the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 championships due to COVID, was followed by a hat-trick of titles on Victorian soil. The 2022 tournament was played in

Jaiden Holly’s first time in the U23 men’s softball championships was one to remember, as he was part of the Queensland team which won the main prize.

Waverley, before the next two were played in Hume.

The team in maroon lost its opening match 6-2 against the host state, before winning seven games in a row: two against ACT and South Australia, and one against each of NSW, Western Australia and Victoria.

Queensland lost 16-14 to NSW on the Saturday, before edging out Western Australia 2-1 and then thumping NSW 9-1 in a semi-final later that same night.

NSW topped the ladder but missed the decider, with the second-placed Queensland pipping the third-placed Victoria 9-8.

Jaiden said he and his teammates had been concerned about NSW, who had a highly-ranked pitcher, before Victoria turned out to be Queensland’s toughest opponent.

Jaiden’s regular fielding position was short stop, before he played at third base in the grand final and made a vital contribution in the tight contest.

“I believe our success was key by our teamwork and all-round ability to play,” he said.

“I don’t believe that one part was stronger than the other.

“We both batted amazing and fielded great.

“Without one or the other we wouldn’t have won.”

Jaiden said the Maroons lost their first game “due to some little mistakes we made as a team”.

“But it didn’t affect us.

We went out and beat them every other time we played them,” he said.

With this year being his final year of U23s, Jaiden said he hoped to go on and make the Queensland open’s team.

THE Caboolture Snakes fifth grade cricketers sank to a nine-wicket defeat against the Palmwoods Hinterland Hawks at Briggs Park in the latest round, while Caboolture’s matches were washed out in the other grades.

Caboolture’s fifth graders were dismissed for 92 before Palmwoods Hinterland declared at 9/98, and then the Snakes were routed for 62 before the Hawks reached the 57-run target in 6.1 overs.

The number 10 batter top-scored in the first three innings, with Aaron Clegg making 27 in Caboolture’s first innings, before Palmwoods Hinterland’s first innings included 36 not out from Mark Cross.

Lachlan Crowe top-scored in Caboolture’s second innings with 21, which included two sixes.

Meanwhile, the third grade match at Glasshouse Mountains Sports Oval began on February 10, before the second day was abandoned.

On day one, the home side reached 3/67 after 23.3 overs.
