The tabling of the petition was the culmination of almost three months of community efforts to communicate and bring awareness to the impacts the road proposal would have on locals and residents.

MORETON Bay has received over $45 million in funding, to invest in five cityshaping infrastructures and lifestyle projects.

The five projects receiving the State and Federal Government funding, along with Council funding, are: • Suttons Beach Pavilion Development • Centenary Lakes Regional Playground • Centenary Lakes Activation • Bongaree to Woorim Active and Public Transport Network Connection • The Mill Lakes Precinct Activation The Suttons Beach Pavilion Development works include the demolition and replacement of the existing pavilion structures, while the Centenary Lakes will get a facelift with an all-abilities playground and zero-depth splash park.

Active transport upgrades at Morayfield Road and a new shared pathway along Esme Avenue will also be part of the Centenary Lakes Activation project.

News in brief Police investigate murder POLICE investigating a homicide at a Morayfield address in January, have charged an 18-year-old man with murder.

It will be alleged just after midnight on Sunday, January 28, the man shot a 29-year-old Deception Bay woman inside a Grant Road unit complex before calling Triple 0.

Upon arrival, emergency services located the woman with life-threatening injuries.

Despite efforts to assist her, the woman died at the scene.

POLICE investigating an alleged serious assault in Narangba on September 25, 2023, have revealed details of the incident.

It is alleged a 29-year-old man from Deception Bay, along with two others, entered a residence on Coochin Avenue just before midday.

They allegedly assaulted a 58-year-old man before leaving.

The victim sustained severe head injuries and was hospitalised for two weeks.

The accused has been charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily

harm, entering a dwelling with intent, robbery in company, and deprivation of liberty.

He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Caboolture Magistrates Court on March 25.

Detectives have also released an image of another vehicle believed to be linked to the assault, urging anyone with information to come forward.

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said the significant pool of funding, along with Council’s $15 million investment, will help enhance the lifestyle of residents and visitors alike.

“The funding means Council can deliver these key projects, while also freeing up funds to allocate to other community projects across the city,” Cr Flannery said.

The government funding comes from the SEQ Livability Fund, which is being delivered under the $1.8 billion SEQ City Deal; a partnership between the Australian Government, the Queensland Government, and Council of Mayors (SEQ).

Beachmere roadworks A SECTION of road on Caboolture-Beachmere Road will continue to be closed for an additional three weeks, due to damages of the heavy rainfall on January 30.

Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Minister, Bart Mellish, said the road would be closed between Hickey Road and Adcock Road.

The section was recently

closed to allow the road pavement to dry out, and to carry out necessary repairs.

TMR is working with City of Moreton Bay Council to allow all other traffic to be diverted via Peel Road.

TMR will notify affected residents, and readers can check the status of the road via the QLDTraffic website, or by calling TMR on 13 19 40.

“The recent consultation process has left the communities I have the honour of representing, and neighbouring communities, feeling marginalised and distrustful,” he said.

“Residents have been informed that engagement is a mere formality, with little room for genuine collaboration or transparency. This lack of respect for community input undermines the democratic process and erodes trust in government institutions.”

Aside from the loss of over 140 homes and farms, and the feeling of disrespect, another issue raised by Mr Powell also spoke of the “human cost”, quoting residents as saying: “The

land in question is not merely geography; it is the source of our collective history, the legacy of generations past.

rebuilt.”

“We stand ready to work collaboratively with government officials to find solutions that balance progress with preservation,” Mr Powell said.

“Our submissions offer constructive suggestions for alternatives that minimise impact and safeguard our community’s future.”

The current Bruce Highway Western Alternative plan is being fought by Elimbah, Moodlu, and Caboolture

residents, as it would see many residential homes demolished to make room for the new highway. The proposed route would extend the Bruce Highway through Moodlu before being split into two branches leading east and west of Beerburrum Road, through Elimbah.

The Highway would then

connect to Steve Irwin Way, south of Beerburrum.

Asked previously about criticism of its processes, a TMR spokesperson said no decision had been made on a preferred alignment for Stage 4.

“TMR is committed to ongoing engagement with the community. We are investigating additional

ways TMR can work with the community as planning continues,” the spokesperson said.

“All feedback will be carefully considered before advancing further technical investigations to determine a preferred corridor alignment, including consideration of alternate corridor alignments.”

Retiring councillor gives sage advice to community Gillam urges people to level expectations ● MORETON BAY ◗ Marina Gomide

AFTER serving the Moreton Bay community for 30 years, Division 8 Councillor Mick Gillam is bidding farewell to his public role.

The former school teacher started his political career in 1994 as a councillor for Pine Rivers, Division 7, and has seen and experienced a lot in his time as a public servant.

While dealing with several natural disasters, including the 2011, 2022 and 2024 floods, opening and improving multiple transport areas, such as the Redcliffe Railway Line and Francis Rd railway overpass, and helping plan/build the city of North Lakes, Cr Gillam cites the growth of the area as the largest and most challenging change he has dealt with.

“When I first started, I had 5,500 voters in Division 7, in Pine Rivers; now I have 26,000 in Division 8, in Moreton Bay,” he said.

“We really used to overservice our Divisions as councillors and some people still expect the same sort of service and it just isn’t possible.

“I had three schools in 1994; today I have 13.”

While the issue of population explosion in the Moreton Bay area is nothing new, Cr Gillam does advise that people need to manage their expectations of Council and what they are capable of doing regarding

infrastructure, including the building of railways, pools, libraries and community centres.

“Council’s big problem is always money, with councils Australia-wide receiving about 1% of the revenue collected by the state and feds,” he said.

“As we are also a rapidly growing area, we just can’t keep pace with the demands for infrastructure.

“When I was younger you were prepared to wait after you moved into an area for things to get built, but nowadays people expect it to be there before they arrive... it would be nice, but who’s going to pay for it?”

The increasing demands of some residents and community groups are one of the negative observations the experienced councillor has observed in his 30 years, noting “the more you give the more people want”, without wanting to pay higher rates to fund those demands.

Additionally, Cr Gillam notes the “totally

undeserved” bad light the local government has been put under, due to the Crime and Corruption Commission’s (CCC) inquiries over the years.

“There may have been a rotten apple or two, but the CCC went after a lot of SEQ mayors,” he said.

Despite these challenges and concerns for the future, Cr Gillam has full confidence in the current Council, sending his support out to all current councillors and the mayor, and is retiring with a

sense of achievement.

“I think I’m leaving the ship in pretty good hands if everyone now a councillor gets re-elected,” he said.

“I’ve put a lot of effort into this area in the last 30 years (and) am leaving happy with what I was able to achieve under the financial circumstances.”

We wish Cr Gillam all the best for his retirement, and hope he and his wife are able to enjoy their planned travels and quality time together!

SOMERSET Regional Council has entered the second week of a six-week caretaker period, which will end at the conclusion of the 2024 local government election.

Council adopted a Caretaker Period Policy during the council meeting on January 24, providing governance and a framework to ensure councillors and council staff are aware of their responsibilities during the mandatory caretaker period.

Somerset Regional Council CEO Andrew Johnson has advised all candidates to be aware of their responsibilities during the caretaker period.

“All candidates have an obligation to be aware of their responsibilities during this time and should exercise caution when using social media platforms, making comments to media or conducting interviews,” Mr Johnson said.

The caretaker period for the 2024 local government election began on January 29 and will end when the last poll declaration is posted in the returning officer’s office.

Mr Bishop’s work history also includes running a peak body in Tasmania, where he had to work closely with political representatives from across the spectrum to

represent the interests of a group of organisations.

Mr Bishop said the Somerset region was changing, while the pace of change seemed to be accelerating.

“The first task is to ensure there is strong governance and the ability to work together on the core issues impacting the region,” he said.

“Hopefully the elected councillors and mayor are passionate about strengthening the communities and hopefully they will speak up about what they see and hear from residents.

“It is their community, and their views are important.

“Secondly, the Somerset Regional Council must have strong relationships with both the State and Federal Governments.”

Mr Bishop said people wanted to live “in a beautiful area, which is close to the city and the Sunshine Coast”.

He said local government leadership was crucial to preserving the values, look and feel of the region, while

preparing for the future growth and demand.

After talking to numerous businesses and residents in the region, Mr Bishop said there were a few key projects he would like to achieve if elected.

It is their (residents) community, and their views are important.

The first key project is ‘Disaster Readiness and Community Recovery’.

“I would like to lead a community consultation process and ensure that the Somerset Regional Council provides a first rate immediate and longer-term response,” he said.

“I note from talking to people that repairs still have not been made to key road infrastructure two years after the last flood.”

The second key project is to establish a Neighbourhood Centre at Kilcoy.

“Neighbourhood Centres provide a safe place for

everyone to belong and participate in their local community to make a positive difference to the world around them,” he said.

Mr Bishop said centres also provide tangible support and assistance to local communities, particularly people and groups facing hardship and vulnerability.

The third key project is to “lobby for all schools in the Somerset Region to have electric safety signs during school hours”. “‘Hit the skids not our kids’ should be the catchphrase for our communities,” he said.

“Although it has been promised in the past, there needs to be results achieved in the safety of our school zones.”

The fourth key project is to develop a

heritage plan.

“Consult with businesses and residents to develop a heritage plan (supplementary to the current tourism plan), ensuring significant historical stories and sites are preserved, and the region never loses sight of the work that has gone on before,” he said.

CABOOLTURE-BASED Parneet Kaur is gearing up to compete at the Australia Galaxy Pageants national final, held at the Bankstown Sports Club in Sydney from May 1 to 4.

Parneet will be among 11 contestants in the Miss Teen Galaxy Australia category, following a topthree placing in the same category at the same event last year, which inspired her to go around again this year.

Parneet said she didn’t expect such a high placing last year, before she was named Miss Teen Galaxy Caboolture later in the year.

The winner will represent Australia on the international circuit, and compete with contestants from numerous countries.

Each contestant at the Australia Galaxy Pageants has the chance to raise money and awareness for the chosen charity: Batyr.

“There’s so much stigma surrounding beauty pageants being toxic,”

Parneet said.

“What I love about Miss Galaxy Australia is that there are no age, height, or weight restrictions.

“They give everyone a chance to compete and try their best.

“Win or lose, I just want to make a difference.”

Parneet will compete in four rounds: Eco Wear, Evening Gown, Fun Fashion, and Interview.

The interview involves Parneet explaining what she has done for her community and why she wants to win.

Parneet’s list of activities includes influencer, brand ambassador and dance coach. Parneet has appeared in multiple magazines, and she has more than 100,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram.

Originally from the northern India state of Punjab, Parneet migrated to Australia just before starting primary school at Nambour State School. She finished year 12 at Narangba Valley State High School late last year, and is now studying

a Bachelor of Education through University of Sunshine Coast (UniSC) with the aim of becoming a high school teacher.

Parneet didn’t speak English at all when she arrived in Australia and, although she became fluent with the language as her school years unfolded, she struggled with confidence.

Parneet said coming from a diverse background “has a big impact on you and it sometimes takes control of your life”, but things changed immensely when she took part in a photoshoot at the suggestion of a friend.

“You feel like you’re literally a prisoner within your skin,” she said.

“Looking back, I thought that having the ‘perfect body, skin, weight and mixing in’ would make me happy.

“But in reality, no matter how much I changed myself, I was never satisfied.

“When I went to a photoshoot and did modeling for that shoot ‘just

for fun’, I felt like a whole new person and felt so comfortable and confident within my skin.”

Parneet then immersed herself in social media and gained support and positive feedback from thousands of followers about her styling and the way she looked.

Parneet created a program called Fearless Vibez, launched in

December 2023, which involves confidence workshops and photoshoots, to inspire girls and help them enter the modeling world, with Parneet saying she didn’t want others to battle unfavourable stereotypes.

“Do not give up. You just need a new group or surrounding, not a new you,” she said.

MORAYFIELD State School has announced the installation of a new 40km/hr school zone speed limit on Morayfield Road.

The speed limits will extend from the southern boundary of Morayfield State School (near Sheep Station Creek) through to approximately 150 metres north of the Caboolture River Road and William Berry Drive intersection.

The speed limit will be enforced between 7am9am and 2pm-4pm.

Principal Rebecca Jones said the new limits “will improve safety for students and the general community travelling to and from the school”.

The announcent prompted an online debate, with some questioning the necessity and saying parents and the school should increase road safety teachings, instead if reducing the speed limit.

Others were amongst the supporters of the restrictions, arguing it could only be positive for children and is normal for roads around schools to have restrictions.

Teens face court after car theft FOUR teenagers have been charged, after being arrested by police in an allegedly stolen vehicle, in Morayfield on February 6.

It will be alleged around 12pm, a grey Volkswagen Tiguan was sighted by police on Caboolture River Road.

PolAir tracked the vehicle for some time, before it was dumped on Lomanda Drive.

The four occupants exited the Volkswagen, before being picked up by a Holden Commodore.

It will be further alleged that the second vehicle then drove to Dundee Street.

Officers attended the location a short time later and took all four occupants into custody without incident.

It will be alleged the Volkswagen was stolen from a residence in Kingaroy on January 5.

Among the charges, a 14-year-old Morayfield boy was charged with 15 offences, including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, enter dwelling and commit and receiving tainted property.

A 15-year-old Caboolture girl was charged with eight offences including unlawful use of a motor vehicle (published on social media), stealing and fraud.

All four had police bail refused.

MORAYFIELD locals Karen and Jamie Goullet embody the motto “sharing love is the best way of celebrating it”. During their 18-year journey, Karen and Jamie have been pioneers in the dog rescue world, opening a sanctuary for senior dogs in their own home, and currently housing 14 dogs, all over 12 years old.

Karen, born and raised

on the Sunshine Coast, met Jamie online when they were in their early 40s.

Both had already been married, with a total of seven kids from their previous marriages, when they embarked on their dog rescue journey.

Opening the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs Brisbane started after Karen, a long-time dog fosterer, received a call about Sally, an old traumatised staffy who needed a home.

Seeing old Sally motivated Karen and Jamie to start adopting senior dogs, since most got euthanised without even being put up for adoption, due to their age.

“All our dogs are over 12 years old, with lots of them being blind and/or deaf,” Karen said.

“In a pound or rescue these dogs don’t stand a chance to live, so we adopt whoever needs us, often not even knowing what they look like.”

“There was no precedent in Australia for what we do, since we aren’t a organisation or business, but just private owners offering a home to dogs in need,” Karen said.

After two town planners inspected the property and observed their work, Council approved their application in December 2023, allowing them to have up to 15 dogs on the property.

This ensures Karen and Jamie will be able to continue their dream, without interference.

“We want to eventually have some time for each other and travel, after Jamie retires.”

Jamie was unable to participate in the interview due to his work as a mechanic for QLD Ambulance calling him away at the last minute.

Support for heart troubles Heart Support Australia returns in Feb HEART Support Australia’s (HSA) Peer Support Groups in Caboolture has a new leader, with the groups starting back on Saturday (February 17).

The HSA Peer Support Groups give post-heart event support for cardiac patients; they are unique communal support programs that offer comfort and guidance to those who have recently undergone a heart event and for those who have experienced heart conditions and rehabilitation.

“Unfortunately, far too often when people are diagnosed with or undergo treatment for a heart condition, they don’t have ongoing support and that can be incredibly isolating,” HSA CEO Dr Christian Verdicchio said.

“Our support groups are designed to ensure our patients are staying

on the path to a healthier life, by making it known to them that they are not alone, because they are interacting with their leader and group members who have gone through similar circumstances.”

Leading the Caboolture Peer Support Group for the first time is Cassie O’Brien, who was diagnosed with congenital heart disease at birth. As a result, she was not expected to live past the age of three.

“I had two open heart surgeries, one at 18 months and the second at three years old,” Cassie said.

“I survived both and have just turned 40.”

In Australia, around nine in every 1,000 babies are affected by congenital heart disease.

Cassie has been a member of HSA for over 10 years,

finding that living with a chronic illness while being a mother is a much harder task than most realise.

At 20 years old, Cassie gave birth to her only son, against all odds.

“I was told I shouldn’t have another kid and I spent three months in hospital recovering from the impact childbirth had on my heart,” Cassie said.

“I felt lost trying to navigate how to raise a child while chronically ill – there is no user manual for that.”

As HSA’s youngest Peer Support Group leader, Cassie aims to be an outlet for people who have gone through or are going through heart issues.

“It’s hard for people to fully understand what it’s like to be a heart patient unless you’ve been through it yourself.”

THREE athletes from the Morayfield-based Red Dragon Martial Arts school achieved silver medals at the Brisbane BJJ (Brazilian jiujitsu) Championships at the Nissan Arena on February 4.

Hayden Birmingham earned silver in Gi, while Kelly Bodsworth and Lyric Van Der Kolk did likewise in Gi and NoGi. Hayden was in the ‘Men’s White Belt Under-88kg’ category, and Kelly was in the ‘14 years Girls Orange Belt’, while Lyric was in the ‘15 years Girls Yellow Belt’.

Hayden, Lyric and Kelly were among 447 competitors, as teams from all over Queensland attended, with the athletes ranging from the age of six up to adult, while there was a variety of skill levels.

Head Instructor of Red Dragon Martial Arts, Brett Fenton, said the Red Dragon trio did very well against very strong competition.

“Both the girls were up against more experienced competitors and learnt a lot from their matches,” he said.

“It was Hayden’s first competition and he learnt so much, and looks forward to competing again soon.”

WHEN Rod Lougheed first took his grandson Connor to martial arts, with the idea that this could benefit the youngster, little did the grandparent know how his own life would change.

Now, Rod has become the oldest member of the Morayfield-based Red Dragon Martial Arts school to have a black belt.

Rod said he brought Connor along to check out martial arts one day in 2012, as Rod thought it could “give him confidence in avoiding potential bullying”.

Connor, however, pursued his love of rugby league instead, while Rod went on to have what he considered “the worst days” of his life from 2015 to 2017. He had retired, while his wife Annette battled motor neurone disease (MND) and ultimately passed

away in 2017 at the age of 64, following 47 years of marriage.

“I knew her all my life and now was plummeting to a very low point if I didn’t reach out and begin reinventing myself. Retirement sucked,” Rod said.

Things changed when Rod entered Red Dragon and spoke to the owner, Brett Fenton (Sifu).

Rod said he then realised that to feed his soul, mind and body, Kung Fu would be the path to wellbeing, while he could focus and concentrate on himself at Red Dragon.

“I fell off the training wheels regularly and got angry with myself and the world,” Rod said.

“Sifu was there to set things straight about biomechanics, mental attitude and toughness, (and) also how to forgive yourself when you mess up.

Cutting cost of power gets easier

One door closes while another opens for Ray Appreciating 34 years of service RECENTLY retired Woodford Fire Station Auxiliary Captain, Ray Williams, is ready for the next chapter of his life, after more than 30 years of serving the local community.

Ray had a farewell event at the Woodford Fire Station on the evening of Thursday December 7, as members of the Woodford, Kilcoy, Dayboro and Deception Bay fire stations attended.

This came after Ray’s roles over the years included Woodford Auxiliary Captain, Woodford SES volunteer, Wamuran Rural Fire Fighter, and PCYC Emergency Services Coordinator Adult Leader.

After joining the SES in 1990, Ray joined the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) in March 1992 and remained with the QFES until December 7, 2023.

Ray said he is ready to move on, as he is prepared to undertake a range of training roles.

He said he loves training people, and that he plans to train personnel around Queensland (and eventually

interstate) with rescue models, including road crash rescue training, confined space rescues, first aid components, and basic firefighting.

As for what was most rewarding about his voluntary roles, Ray said “the comradeship with the different services”.

“During major events like floods and fires, the community gets involved and people support each other,” he said.

Ray also mentioned competitions, saying “firefighting games were good”.

“They kept our skills up and we met others around the state, competed against them and got to know them,” he said.

As for day-to-day activities in his voluntary work, Ray said, “Every job you go to is challenging.

“When I joined in 1992, back then probably 50 per cent of calls were car crashes, and the other half were grass fires and the occasional house fire.

“Now about 80 per cent of calls are car crashes.

“I’ve witnessed so many car crashes over the years,

it’s unbelievable.”

Ray said peer support was always vital, as well as available, while it was a case of feeling right “in the mind”.

“It’s a duty of care for us to make sure ourselves and our crews are fit for duty,” he said.

He said he is walking away “from a proud station” and the new captain is sure to maintain the high standards which were set and met during Ray’s time there.

Ray played a vital role in launching the Woodford PCYC Cadets in early 2021, and he was a coordinator/adult leader of the cadets until November 2023.

He received a Commissioner’s Certificate of Appreciation for his years of service to the QFES, having also won other awards in the past 30 years.

QUEENSLANDERS can now reduce electricity bills with a new initiative from the Miles Government.

The Battery Booster program offers up to $4,000 in rebates to about 2,000 eligible households for installing solar battery systems.

This initiative aims to lower costs and emissions by allowing households to store solar power for cloudy days, easing the grid load.

Eligible homes with at least 5kW solar PV systems can receive rebates ranging from $3,000 to $4,000.

The $10 million program targets households with combined taxable incomes of $180,000 or less, with those earning below $66,667 qualifying for the higher rebate.

To qualify, homeowners must use approved installers and battery systems.

The initiative aligns with Queensland’s renewable energy goals outlined in the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, aiming for 80% renewable energy by 2035, providing cleaner, reliable, and affordable electricity to residents.

The Battery Booster program gives Queenslanders access to cleaner, reliable, and affordable electricity, allowing more sustainable energy solutions to be used.

Police seek help to find missing man POLICE are seeking public assistance to locate a 55-year-old man missing from Caboolture.

Leslie Bates was last seen between Monday, December 25, 2023 to Monday, January 1, 2024.

Police and family hold concerns for his welfare as his disappearance is out of character and he has a medical condition.

Leslie is described as Caucasian with tanned skin, around 175cm tall, with a proportional build, white hair and a grey ‘handlebar’ style moustache.

How Anglicare helps foster and kinship carers Moreton Bay region needs more carers LAST year Anglicare Southern Queensland raised more than $20,000 at the annual Bridge to Brisbane, aimed at shining a light on foster and kinship carers and the difference they make in the lives of the children they care for.

With many carer households struggling due to the cost-of-living crisis, Anglicare wanted to raise awareness and funds to help provide young people in out-of-home care, the opportunities that other children take for granted, allowing them to experience a childhood and to grow up to be contributing members of society.

Some of the initiatives included: • providing short holiday breaks for carers and children to experience a ‘family holiday’ • camps for children and young people, as a positive respite option, where respite care can’t be sourced

• cultural activities/groups for children, young people and carers to enhance cultural awareness and connection • conferences and training for carers to enhance skills and development to better support young people in placement (outside of existing, funded support).

Anglicare Southern Queensland has been supporting thousands of foster and kinship carers for more than 30 years and is involved in recruiting, training and providing ongoing assistance to all carers, the young people in care and their families.

Anglicare Southern Queensland’s Children, Youth and Families Service Manager in Caboolture, Megan Scholes, said while more people are putting their hands up to become a foster carer, there is an urgent need for more carer families in the Moreton Bay region.

“We are always looking for ways to creatively support our carers and equip them with the tools they need to confidently care for a child and provide a safe and nurturing home,” Ms Scholes said.

“We work alongside over a hundred general foster and kinship carer households in the region.

“We’re looking for new general carers who are able to care for sibling groups, of two or three children under the age of 12, either to support reunification or we also need carers with longterm capacity.

“There is also a need across the region for new carers who are able to provide weekend shortterm breaks for our current primary carers.”

Ms Scholes urged anyone considering being a carer to reach out for more information.

“We are always looking for more carers and I would encourage anyone who is

considering fostering to speak to one of our staff about taking that initial step.

“It can be a wonderful and rewarding role, and we will be there to support you each step of the way.

“You can be single, married, a same sex or de facto couple, retired, working full-time or parttime, it doesn’t matter.

“The important thing is that you’re genuinely willing and able to offer a positive environment to support and nurture the best interests of every child.”

Henry Somerset Migrant fiscal fiascos The man who runs a local cafe was near tears in desperation.

He was $20 short paying for his, highly necessary, gas supply.

We will get to his situation, in what appears to be a wave of significant financial squeezes on recent migrants, who have taken over quite a number of local retail outlets, typically cafes, service stations and franchise retailers.

Let’s say from the outset that waves of migrants have brought energy and long hours, for often low returns, for many generations Italians and Greeks from the 1920s, Yugoslavs and those escaping Cold War communism in the 1950s to 1970s, then Vietnamese in the 1970s and then the Lebanese and other Middle East refugees and so on.

What’s different now is that the current migrant wave into retail, largely from India, China and even South America, are a product of screwed up federal government policies.

While the last two decades of ‘stop the boats’ has resulted in some $25 billion spent (and much siphoned

off in waste and corruption) on a few thousand at offshore detention centres, more than three million migrants have flown in and stayed, often on just as dodgy migration schemes.

The most dodgy were around the now rejigged (but yet to be proved improved) 457 skilled migrant visa,

Under My Skin A Coates salad — all dressing, no taste The following is an open letter to the International Olympic Committee vicepresident John Coates: Dear Mr Coates, Thanks so much for telling the Queensland Government, and all Queenslanders for that matter, how to run the State and how to spend taxpayers money.

Don’t get me wrong, on some issues most Queenslanders totally agree with you, but the question remains, “Who the **** do you think you are?”

Your venues plan for the 2032 Brisbane (formerly Palaszczuk) Olympics, which will be surprisingly copied in the upcoming “review”, is probably the right one. Certainly better than the one we don’t have at the moment — the no-plan that has replaced several previous plans.

But before we start, maybe you can clear up a few things that are confusing us.

Brisbane Olympics president Andrew Liveris tells us: “We have signed a host contract, there is a master venues agreement — the delivery of the Games is very tied to venues.”

Is that true Mr Coates and, if so, what’s going on now? Are we not honouring that contract?

Maybe that explains why you

correctly state that the Olympic movement is now on the nose in Brisbane. It would be a major embarrassment to Queensland if we treat such important signed contracts with such disdain.

But your claim that the Olympic movement previously had community support is fantasy. These Olympics never had majority support in Queensland, mainly because it was politically driven from the start, and because the Olympics are fast losing their appeal.

With the introduction of new events and sports, such as cricket, rugby and soccer, which can be seen 12 months of every year, it’s fast becoming just another event.

Many people are wondering when tiddlywinks and train spotting are going to be introduced, so they’re not as infatuated as they once might have been.

The Olympics have become the Salad Games, a bit of a mixed side dish — all dressing, no taste, and fading appeal to the majority.

Which raises the question, has the IOC ever considered where it actually ranks in the world of importance to ordinary people?

Regarded by many as a self-centred organisation with

the legendary Doug Nichols, who was an esteemed Livestock and Property Auctioneer. Weekends were filled with property auctions and farm clearance sales, and I had the role of putting lot numbers on items. The part I cherished the most was calling and pointing out bidders in the lively crowd to help the auctioneer along. The energy of an auction, the subtle body language cues, the reactions of people – it was like theatre, and I was hooked. It wasn’t just business, these sales were social events where farmers and their families caught up and community bonds grew stronger.

In the local case I became involved in, the young Indian had paid $300,000 for the business of a successful cafe.

A little investigation showed the migration organiser actually took half, with only $150,000 actually buying the business from the previous owner.

And the property rent had been raised, given it is owned by an associate of the money lender.

All staked on a loan, which added the business purchase to migration costs, including the dodgy visa, at 12 percent per annum (pa), which increased by 4 percent pa, for the rest of the loan term for every missed payment.

Our checks raised an irony, that this was all organised by a person who came in on a earlier migration wave.

They send a couple of heavies in a flash doof-doof car every fortnight to pick up the very high rent and interest charges, in cash.

few morals, no character and possibly as corrupt as the United Nations, maybe the IOC should consider paying cities to host the Games.

Hey, that’s a thought Mr Coates. If we agree to your venues plan, will the IOC fund it? Queensland and Australian taxpayers will fund some of the extras, like improved transport, but can we leave the venue costs to the IOC? Get back to me when you can Mr Coates. I know you are a busy man, but we would like to hear from you, especially if you have further orders, instructions, or even some helpful advice.

Fur ball fury A reader has eloquently expressed his disgust with the now common sight of people with their dog or cat in a shopping trolley.

He comes out swinging at this “most unhealthy practice” with: “How many trolley attendants would know that an animal has been residing in a trolley? None!

If the fur ball can’t stay at home, shop online or give it some food and shelter while you go shopping.”

WEASEY’S PROPERTY REPORT To welcome my new regular readers – a walk down memory lane again.

Last year, regular readers of this column kindly reached out to me to share their memories and, so I discovered, that my ancestors in this beautiful region go back 5 generations, not 4 as I previously thought. The family history tells the story of how my passion for people and property developed.

From as far back as I can remember, I was immersed in the world of property matters because my father, Kerry, was a Real Estate agent in Woodford.

The office was situated next to the cattle sale yards and little did I know then that this would also shape my future.

My fascination with auctions was sparked by a true gentleman,

but just as dodgy were the various student visas, much encouraged by our ‘for profit’ universities.

So in our region, I know of three retail outlets ‘bought’ by migrants on student visas.

None have attended any university campus, although they may throw in a few essays for an online degree subject - enough to keep the student visa rolling over.

The tragedy is these migrants are smart and want to achieve an Australian university qualification. But they can’t afford the average $56,000 a year fees - plus living costs.

So they get caught up in tragic schemes of very high interest rate finance to buy the lease to a business, only later finding, even with huge hours, they have no chance of making much income let alone finding time to study.

Festering cancer Annastacia Palaszczuk was regarded by most people, including myself, as a remarkable politician — remarkable because of how she got into the job of Queensland Premier in the first place and then held that position so dominantly until factions decided she had reached her use-by date.

Unfortunately, being remarkable did not mean she was a good Premier. She may have been an excellent political party leader but for the people she governed, she was appalling in too many respects.

One of her legacies will be the untreated integrity cancer she helped develop and spread throughout government, especially the public service.

Unfortunately her replacement, Dr Steven Miles, was a quick and willing “intern”, and in the first few months of his reign has clearly demonstrated he’s neither willing, nor qualified to operate on this cancer.

Our cafe owner is struggling, as he can’t afford to upgrade some facilities or pay enough staff. You can see cafe business going backwards, and thus the gas cash shortage.

That won’t be the only one struggling.

COMMENT

The malignant integrity cancer in this government has not been treated, and if those in the highest positions don’t apply specialist attention for this insidious disease immediately, it will become terminal.

One lucky lady There was a family/friends party the other day. I wasn’t invited. It was a ladies-only affair.

It was a high tea put on for my wife. She had reached the age of three score years, plus more than she wants to admit.

Four generations of family were there, plus a few friends dating back to Grade 5 school days.

And to put icing on the birthday cake — she had me to come home to. What a lucky woman.

Just briefly Premier Mogadon Miles is following the Reserve Bank Governor’s motto when it comes to Olympic venues, but he’s added his own flair. He says “I’m not ruling anything in or out”, and then adds “because the unions haven’t told me what to do yet”.

My paternal grandparents were Roy and Gladys Wease (nee Hubner). They raised my dad, Kerry, and his siblings on their dairy farm at Villeneuve.

Gladys Hubner; Ailsa – m. 1 Joe Meloni (dec. 1964) 2. Jack Carter; Jean – m. Colin Lougheed; Oliver (sadly drowned 1953); and Archie – m. Gloria Jenkinson.

From 1941 the family was known to share-farm in Somerset, and later at ‘Wynulla’ Mt Kilcoy.

Sarah Wease, who were among the early settlers in the Kilcoy area.

Fast forward across the years, and here I am – a 5th Generation local. As I ventured into adulthood, I left to work as a tour guide in the Kimberleys and Kakadu National Park for a few years. Those remote, rugged landscapes taught me resilience and the importance of adaptability. Eventually, a deep love of this region called me home.

Nathan ‘Goldie’ Goldstiver, who had recently been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

‘Goldie’ had represented both clubs during his playing career, and the fundraiser was a fitting way to acknowledge a wonderful bloke and his family.

Tragically, ‘Goldie’ lost his battle with MND in 2022 but his memory lives on, as both clubs vowed to continue raising awareness and funds for MND research in his name once a year, with a pre-season friendly and, of course, the Goldie Cup. Fast forward to the evening of January 27, and

the Eagles sought to win the Cup which had been elusive to them, as it had remained in the trophy cabinet of the Gorillas for four years.

Having witnessed the Under 23s win their curtainraiser 1-0, courtesy of an organised plan and a Jake Wheeler strike, the Eagles first graders took to the field looking to replicate the success.

CABOOLTURE softballer, Indy Munro, achieved the thrill of hitting a home run in the decider of the U18 girls national championships last month.

Indy and her Queensland teammates ultimately finished runners-up in the Elinor McKenzie Shield competition, played in the Perth suburb of Mirrabooka.

Queensland won eight and lost two of its round-robin matches, having beaten Victoria, Western Australia and ACT each twice, while having one win and one loss against each of South Australia and NSW. After losing 7-3 to NSW on day two, Queensland beat NSW 5-4 when the teams next met. This was NSW’s only defeat during the six days.

“I believe Queensland’s success during the tournament was our perseverance and determination to be better than the game before,” Indy said.

Indy was familiar with her teammates, having played with and against them at various carnivals.

Queensland had a

respectable 3-1 loss to the competition pacesetter in a semi-final, before the team in maroon booked a rematch with the team in sky blue, as Queensland beat Western Australia 6-1.

Having fielded at third base and in the outfield during the competition, and also made some handy contributions with the bat, Indy hit an automatic home run in the first set of the decider.

This turned out to be Queensland’s only run, as NSW won 8-1 after an uncertain start.

“NSW had consistent batting and were able to execute all plays,” Indy said.

“It is always disappointing to lose a grand final, no matter what the score is.”

Indy also represented the Aussie Diamonds in New Zealand in 2019, and was in the title-winning team as the grand final featured two Australian teams.

Lowood teen bowler chosen for academy LOWOOD-BASED Dekota Brindle has been among 16 bowlers chosen for this year’s Queensland High Performance Academy squad.

With eight females and eight males selected, the squad members were chosen from clubs including Algester, Broadbeach, Capalaba, Cunnamulla, Hamilton, Helensvale, Pine Rivers, Roma, South Townsville and Yungaburra.

Factors in Dekota’s selection included playing

well at state titles and the Junior State Championships, with last month being the fifth and final time that she competed in the Junior State Championships.

She earned a bronze medal in these championships each year, and also achieved a silver medal on one occasion.

Upon hearing of her selection in the academy squad, Dekota said she was “excited to see what the future will bring”. “(I hope to) learn new skills

and hopefully be looked at for the emerging Jackaroos team,” she said.

Plenty of Zoom calls will take place for the academy squad, while the bowlers play for their clubs in the meantime, before meeting up later in the year.

Dekota, who finished year 12 at Lowood State High School at the end of last year, plays summer bowls competitions in Lowood and plays winter bowls competitions in Hamilton.

She has started a TAFE

course to learn how to be a vet nurse, while also continuing her position at a supermarket.

The Queensland High Performance Academy’s development program was launched just over a year ago, catering for a select group of athletes between 15 and 30 years of age.

The program is designed to nurture, educate, mentor, and support the Next Generation of Queensland bowlers with the ambition to represent at the highest level.

Caboolture juniors shine A weekend of challenges and achievements for Caboolture Cannons teams ● CABOOLTURE ◗ Liam Hauser

THREE Caboolture Cannons junior oztag teams competed in the Queensland Junior State Cup, at Sunshine Coast Stadium from February 2 to 4.

It was the first time some of the Cannons took part in this event, while others also took part last year.

Caboolture fielded teams in the U13 boys, U15 boys and U15 girls divisions this year, after fielding U11, U12, U14 and U15 boys teams last year.

This year’s Queensland Junior State Cup was the biggest on record, as there were more than 220 teams, ranging from Far North Queensland to the Tweed Coast.

Although the Cannons U13s didn’t win any of their six games, they improved notably as the tournament unfolded. The margin was only one try in their fourth game, before they drew the Tweed Coast Giants 4-all in their next outing.

Caboolture’s U15 boys

also didn’t taste victory, although they too were competitive. They crossed the tryline in all six of their matches, while their best result was a 6-5 defeat against Moorooka.

Caboolture’s U15 girls,

meanwhile, won the first of their six fixtures, as they scored six tries to one against a Labrador Rabbits Green outfit.

Caboolture was also represented in the refereeing department, as

sisters Ayvah and Rihanna Latham donned the whistle, after they also refereed at last year’s event.

Two referees were appointed for most of the finals fixtures, with Ayvah officiating along with Braigh

Agnew in the U12 girls decider.

Caboolture oztag spokesperson Bek Robertson said, “The kids all played their hearts out in the heat all weekend.

They held their heads

high and showed great sportsmanship and club spirit, even in defeat.

“For some players this was their first State Cup, so leaving with new friends and memories for life is richer than a gold medal.”
