Brains go to water IT IS obvious that when the high powered public servants, multitude of ministerial advisors, their many high paid consultants (and let’s not forget the elected Ministers) go to work in Queensland’s Tower of Power at One William Street, Brisbane, they are asked to leave their brains with security in the foyer.

That’s the only explanation for the latest of a number of brain farts that sees your (and my) hard earned money being thrown out the top window like so much confetti.

It could be that the upper levels of government look out the window to the huge casino being completed next door that they feel excited throwing our taxpayer money recklessly on the gaming table.

I’m not a gambler myself, other than with the weather and produce prices.

The only reason we’ve kept home and hearth together in the family is being pretty tight with a dollar.

A dollar wasted today could be one not available when it’s really needed to buy hay when times get dry or mortgage

payments get lifted.

But that old fashioned fiscal rectitude appears not to exist in the Tower of Power where there appears no end to money that can be borrowed (and let the next generation pay off) or taxes that can be raised (got a traffic fine lately?).

The same government brainiacs who want to demolish the Gabba for $1 billion (whoops, we really meant $2.7 billion and we still haven’t got firm designs or contracts), now throw out $8 billion for a desalination plant to provide fresh water for southeast

Queensland.

That’s despite the current desal plant on the Gold Coast working less than 100 days a year and the recycled water plant at Ipswich not turned on at all.

There’s a billion-and-a-half dollars of unsustainable water infrastructure left by former Premier Peter Beattie.

(As an aside, perhaps the politician’s very handsome superannuation benefit should be tied to the number of fiscal fiascos they leave us - more fiascos, less political super!)

In an era of supposed

eco friendly ‘sustainable development’, why would you approve a piece of infrastructure that is not only hugely costly to build, is costly to run requiring large amounts of electricity, and leaves a terrible environmental footprint sending all the concentrated salt back into the ocean.

This proposed desal plant would use more electricity than the towns of Somerset.

And to work efficiently it needs to be 24/7, so that’ll either be coal fired power stations working longer or many wind tower generators coming to a hill near you. (No they won’t put them on the hills in inner Brisbane near the Green voters).

So $8 billion (a Gabba Olympic stadium guess so expect it to go up and up in your dollars) for infrastructure with high maintenance costs. The government won’t release the maintenance costs of the Gold Coast desal because it is so high - all that salt water causes lots of corrosion.

And all to avoid that terrible word in politically correct language - dams.

Just because the first Coordinator General in

Queensland history who was not an engineer, under Peter Beattie, caused a fiscal fiasco (and a legal nightmare) trying to develop the Traveston Dam on the Mary River.

That dam wall was going to be built on a river bed with 28 metres of sand with porous rock along the eastern side. Dumb.

Just because of one dumb decision, dams are out.

Just off the top end of the Somerset Council region is the site of a perfect dam site, found, studied and tested when the late Mike Ahern was Premier. It’d cost far, far less than $8 billion, even with current landholders paid handsomely to vacate.

And maintenance costs would be very low with reliable high rainfall even in dry years.

In fact, if the Tower of Power give me $8 billion, I’ll build it as well as our Somerset and Wivenhoe, pipe the water into the southeast water grid - and make a very handsome profit.

That’s because I haven’t been to the Tower of Power and left my brains at the door before making decisions!

Henry Somerset, born in South Africa and educated in England, came to Australia to manage rural properties in the 1880s.

After time in central Queensland, he managed properties in this region and took up a holding near what is now Somerset Dam. That water storage is testament to his work, after the 1893 floods which devastated Brisbane, to have a dam built at Stanley Chasm. He fought for this as a parliamentarian from the region from 1904 to 1920.

He was so popular for his work on behalf of the region and its pioneering people that he was elected seven times, often unopposed, to Queensland Parliament.

He believed that water storage would not only prevent floods, but also attract population to develop the Brisbane Valley.

As reward for his far sighted promotion of the valley, the dam, the region, the council (and this newspaper) take the Somerset name.

Strong No vote loud in Somerset New milestone for $14.2B DEPUTY CHAIR of the No Case and Liberal National Senator for Queensland, Paul Scarr, acknowledges the referendum results as an overwhelming rejection of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Voice to Parliament.

Mr Scarr said that the people of Australia have spoken and that the people of the Somerset Region were some of the loudest.

“The referendum lost convincingly in every voting booth in the Somerset Regional Council area,” Mr Scarr said.

“Having spent three days at the pre-poll booth at Esk in the week leading up to the referendum, the reasons were clear.

“Somerset residents want to be treated the same under our Constitution. They do not want

Australians to be divided.”

The Senator also said that many voters raised the issue of the enormous cost of the referendum, adding that Somerset residents are struggling in a cost-of-living crisis.

“It made no sense to propose a referendum which did not have wide support and lacked detail,” Mr Scarr said.

“The people of Somerset want to see the conditions for Indigenous Australians improved. All Australians do.

But this was not the way.

“The Government must now focus on implementing practical policies that will make a difference on the ground; especially in remote and regional Indigenous communities where the disadvantage is the greatest.

There was no need to amend our

Constitution to do that.”

Mr Scarr complimented the way voters and campaigners conducted themselves during the referendum in the Somerset Region.

“I spent three days at the pre-poll booth in Esk. On the first day, the Yes volunteers invited me to share the shade of their marquee. That really set the tone. Thanks to Janet, Jan, Lionel and Doreen – great community minded Somerset residents. People commented on how the Yes and No campaigners were all getting along. That is the spirit we now need to capture as we move forward as a country – working together in a spirit of cooperation. ”

Borumba pumped hydro ONE of Queensland’s largest clean energy projects has hit a new milestone, with the Borumba Pumped Hydro Energy Storage project declared a coordinated project.

The declaration by Queensland’s CoordinatorGeneral means a rigorous assessment of social, economic and environmental matters can begin.

The project, being developed

by Queensland Hydro, involves building a new upper reservoir, as well as a new dam wall that will replace the existing Borumba Dam wall and increase Lake Borumba’s storage capacity from 46 to 224 gigalitres.

It would have the capacity to generate up to 2,000 megawatts of electricity for up to 24 hours at a time.

The community will have opportunities to comment on what should be included in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) as well as Queensland Hydro’s

assessment of the project and proposed mitigations to avoid and minimise impacts.

Geotechnical exploratory drilling has started on the project, in the Southern Queensland Renewable Energy Zone, which will help inform the EIS process.

Deputy Premier, Steven Miles, said this marks another step forward for the Borumba Pumped Hydro Energy Storage project, and further progress towards our state’s future as a clean energy superpower.

“Over the past year, we have led the nation in the construction of new clean energy projects, driving new investment and generating good jobs for Queenslanders,” Mr Miles said.

“Our targets of 70 per cent renewables by 2032 and net zero emissions by 2050 are set to transform our infrastructure, energy system and economy.

Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen and Minister for Public Works and Procurement, Mick de Brenni,

said the Borumba project will be subject to our Queensland procurement policy which means local companies and tradies are being sought to be part of this big build.

“Borumba will allow us to replace expensive fossil fuels with Queensland’s sun, wind, and water–putting the Sunshine State on the map as a global renewable energy hub,” Mr de Brenni said.

“Pumped hydro is proven technology, ready to go now, and has been supercharged by a $19 billion investment in our Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, creating around 2,000 local jobs and securing our renewable energy future.

“Because Queenslanders kept their energy network in public hands, they have the power like nowhere else in the nation to benefit from the clean energy transition.”

Infrastructure for the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project will travel through the northern end of Somerset region.

Somerset set to shine Councillor Gaedtke to retire bright again this Christmas CHRISTMAS light enthusiasts can dust off the fairy lights and neon Santas, with judges announced and dates set for the 2023 annual competition.

Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke said she was looking forward to judging this year’s entries.

“Somerset residents have shown themselves to be enthusiastic and imaginative in their light displays, and

the competition is likely to be tough. While judging can be a challenge, I’ll be relying on fellow judges Cr Jason Wendt and Glamorganvale Christmas lights expert Jason Beattie, to help find Somerset’s best Christmas lights displays,” Cr Brieschke said.

Dates have been set for the annual competition, with more information to be shared through Council’s website and social media channels.

The competition will open on October 23, with entries closing on November 23, giving residents plenty of time to plan their displays. A highlight for the region will be the lights trail in the lead-up to Christmas.

“As usual, Council will publish a list of all Christmas light displays in December to allow families to view the homes and businesses of participating residents, sharing a little Christmas magic with us all,” Cr Brieschke said.

Customer service award win for ARB Caboolture THE Caboolture-based ARB store was recognised for its quality customer service, as the store took out the Queensland-based Customer Service Excellence Award.

ARB Caboolture retail sales manager Mark Vickery accepted the award at the annual ARB state conference at Hotel X in Fortitude Valley several weeks ago, attended by ARB stores and stockists from all over Queensland.

Customer feedback surveys which were sent to the ARB head office were a decisive factor in determining the award winner, as feedback has suggested ARB Caboolture has had many happy customers.

ARB Caboolture owner Roger Vickery said customers at all ARB stores often had high expectations in terms of quality products and services, and that

it was very satisfying for the Caboolture store to receive an award.

Roger said one would “feel a bit more confident” after gaining such recognition.

Having started ARB in Albion 40 years ago – after the company was founded eight years earlier – Roger retired as state manager of ARB Queensland in 2020 and then purchased the Caboolture store.

With his son Mark and daughter Lauren among the staff, Roger said Lauren led the way with happy customers with most customer satisfaction being thanks to her work ethic and work performance.

Roger said good customer service required more than just a pleasant and friendly manner, as the staff needed to deliver to a minimum level of customers’ expectations “and then exceed

it, so it becomes something memorable”.

Roger said the store had a lot of returning customers while there was a wide variety of ages and backgrounds among them.

AFTER two terms as a councillor and a long working career with Somerset Regional Council, Cr Cheryl Gaedtke has announced her retirement from Council, and her intention not to stand at the March 2024 local government election.

“I believe the time has arrived that I gracefully retire from the role of Somerset Regional Councillor, therefore I will not be seeking re-election in March next year,” Cr Gaedtke said in an address to a council meeting on October 11.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my career, where I have experienced never ending changes, surmountable challenges, and where I have met many wonderful enterprising, brilliant and caring people.”

At the age of 16, Cheryl took a junior clerical position with Kilcoy Shire Council, where she first learned about the multi-faceted role of local government in supporting communities.

Taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the organisation for training and hands-on learning, she worked her way up the corporate ladder, becoming Manager Finance and Administration prior to local government amalgamations in 2008. A highlight during this time was being appointed Acting Chief Executive Officer during the recruitment period of a new CEO. Since being elected to Council in 2016, Cr Gaedtke has enjoyed helping the region progress in many areas, however a special interest in health, wellbeing and recreation has given her great satisfaction.

“There are so many wonderful opportunities in these areas for our region, and I have witnessed the introduction of or improvements in our

facilities, in new and exciting programs, in community events, in arts exhibitions and activities and of course the ongoing success of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

“Wellbeing is diverse, and the benefits of such activities and program on our health, both physical and mental, individual and communal, can’t be understated.”

The councillor also sees small business as the backbone of the economy in the region, noting that tourism related businesses and activities help form the character of Somerset.

“Our region has it all, from four-wheel driving, motocross, rainforest, forest trail, unique villages, and the amazing Brisbane River to lakes, horse racing, paddock to plate experiences, and the longest

rail trail in Australia. I’m proud of the work that Council has done. And continues to do, in actively engaging with our small businesses to raise their profiles and help them develop greater capacity.”

Cr Gaedtke summed up her local government experience in her announcement to stand down, referring to a message she shares with young people in the region.

“When I am asked to speak to our school students about my role, I express sincerely to our young future leaders, if you find the right job, it will never feel like a job, but rather a part of life that presents enjoyment, passion and unmeasurable rewards.”

Local government elections will be held on March 16 2024.

It’s all happening at The Linville Hotel SPOOK night and a Melbourne Cup luncheon are among the upcoming drawcards at the Linville Hotel, as the hotel enters a new phase for the remainder of this year.

About 18 months after Evan and Tanya Grimward, and Cathal and Tracey Diver took on the ownership of the business, Tracey said new offers and three new chefs were among the imminent changes in addition to the calendar events.

One notable change within the past few months was the appointment of hotel operations manager Sharon Bigalla, who has had managerial roles at other hotels including the Kilcoy-based Stanley Hotel.

“It’s taken 12 to 18 months for us to get our staff, systems and structures in place,” Tracey said.

“We want it to be a one-stop shop with accommodation, food and drink in the unique country setting we have.”

Tracey emphasised the need to have “that high level of customer service”.

Spook night next Friday (October 27) will be the start of a regular Friday deal where children aged 12 and under can have a $5 dinner comprising main course and dessert.

Spook night, meanwhile, will be the Linville Hotel’s Halloween night which

features a movie under the stars from 6pm.

Children are encouraged to come dressed in a costume as prizes are on offer for the most ‘spook-tacular’ outfits, and there will also be a prize winner for the colouring competition.

With the Melbourne Cup luncheon on Tuesday November 7, bookings are essential as there will be a special lunch menu that day in addition to the screening of the racing action.

There will also be sweepstakes, and prizes for best dressed.

With the end of the year looming, Tracey said the hotel staff were also looking at Christmas packages for groups of 20 or more people, while the hotel could also cater for events such as birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, and mid-week weddings.

Additionally, community groups such as art, music and business groups could use the dining area as a private area for monthly meetings.

Tracey said the hotel staff had done meat tray raffles and given the takings to the Linville Progress Association, while money raised from other raffles was given to Linville State School.

“A country pub is a place where you can support and give back to your community as much as you can,” Tracey said.

Senior years should be your best years I LOOK back with pride to the evening of July 1, 1976 when I chaired the launch function of National Seniors Australia, the first attempt in Australian history to create a national organisation to represent older voters in the corridors of power of all the Parliaments of Australia.

I then learned a lot about ageing as I served on its Board of Directors for 35 years.

Dame Enid Lyons, a parliamentarian in her own right as well as being the widow of the former Prime Minister of Australia, Joseph Lyons, was the guest of honour at the launch and she made a wonderful speech about the art of growing old.

She told us that it was easy. Just let it happen, she said.

Sadly for too many oldies in Australia, this has not been a happy experience and there are many reasons for this.

Nevertheless, many goals have been kicked for seniors who have made our lives better.

Back at the time that I was born in 1931, the Great Depression was underway and this was swiftly followed by World War II. The pension at that was meagre and the going for oldies was tough. It is much better now, but if you reach retirement in poor health and with no home you are in real strife.

You will be living below the poverty line and having to choose between buying food or

medicine.

Housing is actually worse now. Just after the war ended in 1945 governments built lots of small houses with low rentals that were okay for pensioners, but there are now far fewer of such houses as population has exceeded supply and costs of all housing of any type has skyrocketed.

In the case of my family in Linville in the Brisbane River Valley, in my early years the timber mill for whom my dad worked actually provided us with a free house as part of our meagre pay packet and you could rent it cheaply if you retired there.

Medical costs are now a huge problem for oldies. The gap between bills and what Medicare and private health funds will refund is huge.

When I was in Linville, we went to the Kilcoy Hospital as outpatients when we were ill but too many seniors today want to see a private doctor not a hospital doctor.

Those private hospitals give out prescriptions that cost more than pensioners and most selffunded retirees can afford.

There are, of course, now many more retirement villages and nursing homes than ever before, most of whom charge far too much in entry charges and maintenance costs and during Covid they were found wanting in their quality of care.

Some nursing homes now struggle to survive, like the one I helped to establish at Toogoolawah

many years ago.

They are too small to cover their operating costs.

Most of us now want to be cared for in our own homes and this puts huge strains on carers but is the best way forward if pressure can be taken from the plight of carers. Too often, the carer dies first.

Longevity is actually wonderful. Most of us can expect to live to 90 but our money will often run out by then unless governments give incentives to people to stay working part-time until 75.

However, this continued work actually keeps people healthy and lengthens their lives. Life is full of challenges.

Soon, we will find that our largest age group will be 85 to 100, with some living to 110.

The second largest group will be aged 70 to 85 and the smallest age group will be one to five. How do we finance that? The best way is to force tax evaders to pay up their rightful dues.

Well, as Dame Enid said, relax and enjoy our old age while being active volunteers in society to make life interesting.

We can turn grey into gold if we live positively and not believe that the rest of the world owes us a living.

Rape victims put through the spin cycle SURELY we are not going to let this state of affairs continue in Queensland.

Story 1: A woman raped by two men goes to a public hospital emergency department in August 2023. She waits six hours before being told there were no rape kits available and no camera, told to take her own photos of her injuries, and come back next day.

Story 2: A woman presents to hospital in August after being raped and is told she could not be examined due to a lack of trained staff. She is transferred to another hospital by road, only to be ramped for a further eight hours.

Story 3: A large lizard was rushed into a Brisbane vet’s surgery after swallowing a tube of M&Ms. “The remarkable procedure was carried out under heavy sedation, ensuring a brief and comfortable experience for our scaly patient.”

Makes you feel good, doesn’t it. We know the lizard was released after it made a full and speedy recovery. And the two women? Who knows? Who really cares?

Chances are all this would have been covered up had it not been for media exposure and Opposition questions in parliament.

There have been claims one of

the women “was told to go home, … she’s not allowed to shower.”

Do you think that’s sick?

It gets worse. Even when it was exposed, Health Minister Shannon Fentiman and her department immediately adopted washing machine tactics. They switched to spin cycle.

“It is clear she did not receive the timely, compassionate, trauma-informed care that she was entitled to and expected,” the Minister told parliament.

“The hospital and health service has apologised to the young woman.”

What the Minister didn’t say was that the health service had only offered support and apologised that morning, by text, just minutes before she spoke in parliament — two months after the event.

And the superficial spin continued. Ms Fentiman said she understood the hospital had been trying to get in touch with the woman to apologise.

Fentiman wants us to believe the hospital couldn’t contact the woman, the victim of callous indifference, for two months, but miraculously found her the day the shocking incident hit the headlines.

It appears the only people paying the price for Queensland’s inadequate and, at

times, uncaring health system are members of the public and the health workers forced to unfairly bear the brunt of the criticism.

And while these people suffer, inept health administrators and their political masters just smugly sit there — spin cycle in overdrive.

Okay, we might not expect him to divulge explicit details of how a teacher was teaching a student more than the three Rs, but “aware of concerns”?

Really? Is that the best he could lamely come up with?

How I hate this political correctness crap.

Saying nothing

Water fights

THEIR mouths move but they say nothing. It seems our schools, private and public, have been beaten over the head with the same say-nothing PC stick.

How’s this for avoiding any meaningful contribution to an horrendous event. “One of our students was harmed in an incident at a park outside our school yesterday.”

Harmed? How about knife wounds to his abdomen and legs and rushed to hospital in a serious but stable condition?

Then came the story that “one of Brisbane’s best private schools” had “dropped” a female teacher after allegations she and a year 12 boy were in a relationship.

What did the college head say? “The college is aware of concerns regarding a staff member and is investigating the matter.”

A NUMBER of readers can see the funny side of the latest episode of the “water provision Queensland style” miniseries.

Premier Palaszczuk has announced the construction of a new desalination plant to boost water supplies in the south-east.

She doesn’t know where or when it will be built, but possibly in Moreton region and maybe some time in the next two decades.

It might cost somewhere between $4 billion and $8 billion (make that $24 billion?) but she doesn’t know how it will be funded.

Oh, and she doesn’t know if it will prove to be an economically sound venture because the business case hasn’t been prepared yet, but don’t you worry about that.

Fourteen years ago Peter Beattie spent $12 billion waterproofing the region but that was obviously an abject failure

because we’re doing it all over again.

Oh, and another thing.

Recycled water is not an option, “not while my bum points to the ground and my ego points to the stratosphere.”

That prompted one reader to tell me the following: “The subject of recycled water in the media has often come under the heading of ‘Recycled sewage’, accompanied by a photo of treatment ponds at Luggage Point.

“In England the water you drink is said to have been through you five times. Nobody is dying from that.

“Some years ago I kayaked down the Brisbane River from Wivenhoe to Mount Crosby weir, the holding storage for the water purification plant.

“The river was little better than a large drain with cattle manure, dead birds and fish and other flotsam as well as run-off from boating, gravel extraction, towns and agriculture, and people don’t complain about drinking that purified water.

“We should be doing more recycling rather than spending, unnecessarily, mega dollars on desalinisation.”

I doubt the Premier wants to hear that sort of comment.

I WONDER how many Queenslanders know, or even care, how much our Coffee Clutch Cabinet is costing us.

The fact that Ministerial offices cost taxpayers $54 million last financial year hardly raises an eyebrow. Even the mainstream media seems to think it’s fine given the almost total lack of attention the eyewatering figure attracted.

You would wonder why it costs so much, given the belttightening taxpayers have been forced to do, but those in the Tower of Power managed to increase their spending by $7 million on the previous year.

I bet the families of people who died while waiting for an ambulance, or victims of crime waiting for some sort of compensation, or rape victims waiting for examination, care; and a touch of compassion, would have liked just a little of that self-allocated largesse.

Mowing and slashing tender awarded Gallery recognises late artist and skydiver SOMERSET Council has accepted a new tender for mowing and slashing services in the region.

Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee Representative, Cr Kylee Isidro, said the tender involved the analysis of 504 different combinations of mowing deck size, locality and land type to ensure the best available options for managing public areas over the next three years.

“We are really pleased that suppliers based in the Somerset region have emerged

as frontrunners, ranking first in 69% of all categories,” she said.

“We make no apologies for providing a 10 per cent weighting in favour of local suppliers with our panel supply tenders because by doing this Council is actively fostering an environment that encourages sustainable economic growth within the region.

“We are thrilled to see our local suppliers excel in this competitive process, showcasing their expertise and capabilities.

“The success of this tender highlights the importance Council places on building strong partnerships within the community and ensuring that local businesses play a significant role in the region’s development.”

Support for future cross-country events in Toogoolawah SPONSORSHIP of two future sporting events to be hosted

by Toogoolawah Golf Club was approved at Somerset Regional Council’s ordinary meeting on October 11.

Mayor Graeme Lehmann praised the golf club for its proactive approach to finding new income streams, and through a well organised event which had a significant economic benefit for the wider community.

“The club hosted the

Queensland All Schools Cross Country Championships in 2021, attracting nearly 600 registrations and a spectator crowd of more than 1500 people, with most participants coming from outside the Somerset region,” Cr Lehmann said.

“The estimated spend on items like accommodation, venue and hire equipment and visitor expenditure is more than $100,000 for a single day event.

The organisers have expressed interest in holding annual cross-

country events at Toogoolawah Golf Club in 2024 and 2025 and Council is happy to support the club in bringing those events to Somerset.”

Council anticipates entering into a formal agreement with both the event organisers, Queensland Athletics, and Toogoolawah Golf Club to finalise the sponsorship arrangement for the 2024 Queensland All School Cross Country Championships and the 2025 Queensland Cross Country Championships.

September excellence bursaries awarded FOUR young Somerset residents have been awarded excellence bursaries for their participation at sporting events, with three of them at a state level.

Councillor Sean Choat said he was delighted to see some of the region’s younger residents competing in higher level sports competitions.

AN ART gallery commemorating the legacy of Phil Whatmore was opened for the first time at the Toogoolawah-based Ramblers Drop Zone on Sunday, October 8.

More than 200 paintings were unveiled, with Dave McEvoy fulfilling a promise to look after the artwork of his late friend.

Dave said it was “a labour of love” to do what he did after he had cleaned, named, framed, restored and catalogued Phil’s enormous collection.

“When I went to Phil’s house and looked into the shed that he used as a studio, it was like walking into an Aladdin’s cave,” Dave said.

“I discovered over 400 paintings that were stacked around the walls.

“Phil only ever sold or gave away a few paintings to friends and despite encouragement to do so, he would not exhibit his work.

“Phil was as humble about his talents with a paintbrush, as he was quiet about his ongoing physical pain, and his extensive generosity to those less fortunate than himself.”

Phil sustained crippling injuries and was unable to walk without sticks, after 11,000 volts of electricity surged through his body during the accident.

After a long period of recovery, Phil resumed painting and did a lot of acrylic work while his other styles included oil and water colours.

Phil also painted a lot of portraits, including a series on Adolf Hitler.

“It was very brave of Phil to paint Hitler and although the paintings may be seen as controversial, they should also be considered a point of difference for Phil, as an artist,” Dave said.

Following the lifethreatening accident in 1976, Dave said Phil was an embittered person and a staunch atheist until he came to terms with his physical condition and became a strong christian.

“Phil’s faith in God and his physical and mental determination were indisputable and, despite the odds, he managed to fulfil his skydiving passions and return to parachuting activities,” Dave said.

Phil encountered another tragedy when his fiancé died of a brain haemorrhage only about a week after they announced their engagement, but Phil’s faith in God enabled him to deal with this difficult time.

Phil meanwhile was generous with his money, as he donated a lot of it to children in Australia and overseas.

Phil’s life ended in a parachuting accident near his Gatton residence in May 2012.

“My job now is to promote him and see what people have to say about his art, in the real world,” Dave said.

New Bill to unlock housing and land supply across Queensland HOUSING and land supply pipelines will be streamlined to deliver more homes, faster in Queensland under a revamp of the planning framework.

The Housing Availabilityand

Affordability (Planning and Other Legislation Amendment) Bill 2023, introduced to Parliament amends the Planning Act 2016 to improve the planning framework’s response to housing supply

challenges.

It includes a raft of new measures to cut barriers and get more affordable and diverse homes off the ground without delay.

The proposed changes

Further 2,500 hectares to be added to protected area estate THE State Government has taken the first step to rededicate more than 2,500 hectares of land currently declared as timber reserve and state forest as national park and conservation park.

State Parliament has approved the revocation of the current land tenure classification of various parcels of land, allowing for their rededication as national park and conservation park in the coming months.

This includes: * Revoking the current land tenure of around 17 hectares of Mount Mee State Forest to enable future classification as national park, boosting the protection of threatened species including the Bahrs scrub croton, central greater glider, koala and rib-fruited malletwood. * Revoking the current land tenure of around 995 hectares of Deer Reserve State Forest to enable its future classification as

a conservation park, supporting the protection of threatened species including the koala and rib-fruited malletwood. * Revoking the current land tenure of around 129 hectares of Beerwah State Forest, known locally as Ferny Forest, to enable its future classification as a conservation park, supporting the protection of threatened species, including central greater glider, koala, glossy black-cockatoo and the Christmas bells flower.

WEASEY’S PROPERTY REPORT PAIN and gain: Loss-making short-term resales rose in recent data, despite broader profitability in the housing market.

The share of homes sold within a two-year timeframe has risen by one percentage point to reach 8.5% over the past year. However, the portion of these rapid resales resulting in sellers incurring losses has seen a more significant increase.

Recent data from the CoreLogic Pain and Gain report reveals a rise in the percentage of short-term resales incurring losses. This figure has jumped from 2.7%

to 9.7% within a year.

Head of Research and report author Eliza Owen said a deeper dive into the performance of resales within a two-year period highlighted pain for recent home buyers.

“Two years is a significant time period because we are two years on from the height of pandemic-related lockdowns, low interest rates, and have just passed the peak of transitions from low fixed rates to high variable rates,” Ms Owen said.

When we look at the regional market specifically, resales within two years made up 11.1% of overall resales, compared to a decade average

of 7.2% per year.

The above-mentioned trend is atypical, as property owners obviously aim to sell for a profit usually and tend to hold onto their properties for a more extended period in order to do so, if need be. The occurrence of a resale resulting in a loss within such a short timeframe should be considered in the context of rapidly rising interest rates during that period, and significant cost of living pressures which has meant that owners are more likely to accept a loss and not hold out to seek capital gains.

However, it is important to balance this subset of data with

include: * New powers for the Planning Minister to acquire land or create easements to deliver critical infrastructure needed to unlock development; * A new assessment pathway for development that is a State priority, such as infill and affordable housing; and * A new land use zone called the Urban Investigation Zone, enabling councils to better manage development in growth areas.

Several other processes are set to be streamlined, including urban encroachment provisions and the Minister’s direction powers for local planning schemes.

The Bill also amends other planning legislation to ensure the system is working as efficiently as possible.

The legislative reforms come as the Queensland Government prepares to deliver the final ShapingSEQ 2023 Update to support housing growth in

South East Queensland.

The proposed changes also form part of Queensland’s response to the planning reforms agreed to at National Cabinet and in the National Planning Reform Blueprint.

Deputy Premier, Steven Miles, said the need for more housing is an issue being felt across the entire state and the nation.

“As the fastest growing state, we need to be able to pull new levers in the planning and development system to deliver more homes, faster,” he said.

“This Bill will support the implementation of ShapingSEQ 2023 - our blueprint for delivering 900,000 new homes needed in the south-east corner by 2046 to accommodate 2.2 million new residents.

“To address housing supply constraints, the new laws will give the State powers to manage fragmented land holdings, approve affordable developments and take control

of easements for water, power and sewerage.

“It will help Queensland to reach our share of the National Housing Accord target of 1.2 million new well-located homes over five years. And ensure Queensland is leading the way in response to the National Planning Reform Blueprint, so we are at the table to receive our fair share of this new federal funding to support growth.

“At the Housing Summit, we committed to introducing legislative changes to remove barriers to housing development.

“This Bill delivers on that promise, providing a comprehensive response to the key challenges impacting the delivery of housing across our state.

“These changes mean more homes and more jobs for Queenslanders.”

Morgan Australian Consumer Confidence index has been in weaker than average territory since the pandemic began, but was up 1.9pts to 80.1 this week - the first time the index has been above 80 since February 2023 – almost eight months ago to the day.

Vegetation management framework to be strengthened THE Palaszczuk Government will enhance its management of native vegetation in Queensland following an independent review into factors behind Queensland’s land clearing rates.

The Native Vegetation Scientific Expert Panel was established in March 2022 to review the land clearing data following the release of the 2018-19 Statewide Landcover and Trees Study (SLATS).

The independent expert panel, led by the then Queensland Chief Scientist Hugh Possingham, was tasked with identifying positive solutions in relation to native vegetation management as well as providing recommendations for improvement.

The panel found that, while the Queensland Government’s

ap p r oach to s u s tain ab ly managing native vegetation is strong, there are opportunities for improvement.

The panel made 10 recommendations that will enhance the implementation of the existing native vegetation management framework and further support landholders to take advantage of emerging carbon and natural capital market opportunities.

Recommendations include maintaining regulatory stability, launching an environmental stewardship program, enhancing carbon market opportunities and better regional planning.

Environment Minister, Leanne Linard, said the State Government introduced robust and responsible vegetation management laws to protect

valuable environment, habitats and the Great Barrier Reef.

“Recently-released tree clearing data shows these laws are working, with a 70% reduction in regulated vegetation clearing over three years, and a further 59,654 hectares of vegetation regrowth detected,” she said.

“However, the expert panel has identified opportunities to enhance our laws and has set out a path toward a more harmonised approach to native vegetation management in Queensland that better engages, incentivises and recognises the important work of landholders to conserve our forests and habitat on their properties.

“Landholders play an important role in the conservation of habitat on their land, and actively manage

the risks posed by fire and invasive species that can have a devastating impact on our native vegetation.

“The State Government will continue to work closely with landholders to improve the resilience of our regional ecosystems for the future, while maintaining or improving food and fibre security.

“Additionally, in the 2023-24 Budget, the State Government allocated $9.8 million over four years for an enhanced compliance program, supporting landholders to understand the requirements of the vegetation management framework and improving landholder understanding of how vegetation management can assist in reducing their carbon emissions.”

Minister for Agricultural

Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities, Mark Furner, said we have already started work to implement the panel’s recommendations through recently released programs such as the Queensland Low Emissions Agriculture Roadmap 2022 – 2032.

“We are also strengthening partnerships with land managers through the $50 million, third investment round of the Land Restoration Fund and the $2.3 million offered to date under the Carbon Farming Advice Scheme,” Mr Furner said.

“This is all about enhancing Queensland’s reputation as a reliable supplier of clean, sustainable agricultural produce.”

Resources Minister, Scott Stewart, said the Queensland

Government’s responsible vegetation management laws protect our valuable environment, habitats and the Great Barrier Reef.

“We are committed to a regulatory framework that protects our natural environment while ensuring the sustainability of those primary industries that produce the food and material upon which we all rely,” Mr Stewart said.

“It is critical that the collection of funds is transparent and used appropriately to leverage a stronger biosecurity system.

transaction levy transacts at $5 per head per transaction, with individual cattle subject to numerous transactions generating multiple levy transactions on the same animal.

“It is critical that any new system is fair and equitable to all agricultural producers, and potential duplication of levy collection events on a single article are appropriately dealt with.

“CA seeks to advance co-funding and investment strategies with stakeholders, including models that consider key risk creators and system beneficiaries in an equitable manner.

“In the interest of fairness, it is not sustainable or equitable for the proposed new Biosecurity Protection Levy to be implemented ahead of the Container/Import Levy necessary to address the

biosecurity risk posed by imports and shipping containers.

“CA continues to support

improved biosecurity measures, and the increased investment required, to meet our escalating

biosecurity challenges over the next decade. CA will continue to provide effective leadership,

and seek transparent oversight, particularly in regards to levy collection.”

The ‘TNFD’ opportunity SOMETIMES in life, opportunities come from the most unexpected of places.

For example, has anyone heard of the ‘Taskforce for Nature Related Financial Disclosures’ or ‘TNFD’? It sits within the United Nations.

Now I know when many of us hear the word Taskforce, our eyes glaze over wondering where all those well-meaning discussions ultimately end up.

But TNFD represents, in AgForce’s opinion, a once in a generation opportunity for landholders. Let me explain.

This Taskforce has

developed an innovative set of disclosure recommendations for organisations trying to report and act on the everevolving dependencies of nature. They cut through the confusion by breaking down the full range of impacts, risks and opportunities.

The recommendations provide guidance and enable businesses and finance to integrate nature into decision making, and as the Taskforce states: ‘ultimately support a shift in global financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes and toward nature-

positive outcomes.’

Some Australian banks are pushing the Australian Government to include these recommendations in its soon to be released ‘sustainable finance’ agenda.

This follows a new set of guidelines released at the UN Climate Week in New York recently, where banks made it clear they want full disclosure of impacts on the natural environment. Under the guidelines, financial institutions WILL assess biodiversity impacts and dependencies as part of their

assessment of whether to lend you money as a landholder.

I don’t need to describe to anyone the threat this could pose – but in keeping with this theme - I want to change perspective, and hover on the inherent opportunity for a minute.

Let’s look at this from a broader perspective - what would happen if we sit on our hands and do nothing? That represents more of a threat to landholders.

Landholders have an asset under their stewardship that is gaining value daily –

it’s called Natural Capital.

Having a verifiable baseline of that Natural Capital resource provides a significant opportunity to appreciate and hold that value on property, to use and develop it as part of your business.

It also means these assets can be properly recognised by banks, by other service providers and by the broader community. What an opportunity if we lean into the conversation – which is what AgForce intends to do.

The risk of course is we sit by and watch others take the

Grants on offer to grow local bike TOOGOOLAWAH and ESK POLICE riding and walking networks APPLICATIONS are now open for the 2024–25 round of cycling and walking local government grants.

Through the Cycle Network Local Government Grants program, the Queensland Government provides 50/50 matched funding to local governments to undertake planning, design and construction of high-quality bike riding infrastructure on the principal cycle network.

Through the Walking Local Government Grants program, the Queensland Government provides 50/50 matched funding to local governments to develop walking network plans and priority works programs with a focus around primary destinations such as public transport, schools, and town centres.

Walking network plans identify how everyday

destinations can be better connected by comfortable, direct, safe and accessible routes, and are accompanied by priority works programs to help turn the plans into reality.

Applications close on December 12, with approved projects to commence from July 2024.

Transport and Main Roads Minister, Mark Bailey, said the Queensland Government is committed to making walking and riding a bike an easy, convenient and enjoyable way to travel, wherever you live in Queensland, which is why there’s been $126 million in local government grants since 2015.

“Our investment has supported local governments across the state to deliver more than 191 kilometres of active transport infrastructure,” he said.

“Funding grants are generally provided on a 50/50 basis and

provide a solid basis for state and local governments to work together.

“We know that, on average, every dollar we invest in bike riding infrastructure will return nearly five dollars in economic benefit to Queensland with improved health outcomes, reduced traffic congestion and lower transport costs, and that’s why we are investing a further $328 million over the next four years in active transport projects in Queensland.”

PARAMEDICS transported a man in his 20s to Ipswich University Hospital in a stable condition.

He sustained head injuries following a single-vehicle crash on the Brisbane Valley Highway at 11.56pm, October 6.

A 51-year-old male from Dalby, a 39-year-old male from Crestmead, a 51-year old-male from Harlin and a 31-year-old male from Marsden were arrested for separate matters of failing to appear at Toogoolawah Magistrates Court.

A 27-year-old male from Mount Gravatt was issued an Infringement Notice for driving an Unregistered vehicle at Harlin.

A 17-year-old male from Esk was issued an infringement notice for speeding (141km/ hr) on the Brisbane Valley Hwy Toogoolawah.

A 20-year-old male from Toogoolawah was issued with a notice to appear in court for a hooning offence at Toogoolawah. His vehicle was immobilised for 90 days.

A 17-year-old female from Teelah was issued a notice to appear in court for driving whilst disqualified at Toogoolawah.

A 32-year-old male from Morayfield was issued a

notice to appear in court in relation to contravention of a domestic violence order in Toogoolawah.

A 44-year-old male was arrested and held in custody in relation to contravening a domestic violence order in Toogoolawah.

On October 6 emergency services attended a serious traffic crash on Gregors Creek Road where a 70-year-old male from Toowoomba was airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

On September 30 Esk Police intercepted a vehicle in Ipswich Street, Esk. As a result, a 44-year-old Caboolture man was issued a notice to appear in court for drink driving.

On October 1 Esk Police responded to a traffic crash on a private property at Buaraba involving an off-road utility vehicle. As a result of this crash, a 17-year-old boy was airlifted to hospital with significant injuries.

This is a timely reminder of the importance to ensure that anyone operating a leisure or off-road vehicle should have the appropriate skill level to safely operate the vehicle. It must be in a safe and operable condition and should be driven to the conditions at the time.

Esk Police are investigating a traffic incident that occurred at Ipswich Street, Esk at approximately 6pm on October 4.

It is alleged that a blue Holden Commodore sedan with no registration plates was driven at high speed through Esk township, almost colliding with multiple vehicles.

If anyone has any information regarding this incident, please contact the Esk Police Station or alternatively Policelink on 131 444.

On October 6 Esk Police intercepted the driver of a truck on Ipswich Street, Esk. As a result a 24-year-old Toogoolawah man was issued with several infringement notices including using a mobile phone whilst driving, driving a vehicle without the appropriate licence and having an unsecured load.

Shortly afterwards, Police intercepted another vehicle in Ipswich Street, Esk. As a result, a 19-year-old Mt Beppo man was issued a notice to appear in court for disqualified driving and providing a false name to Police.

Since June, Police have responded to 17 traffic crashes within the Esk Police division, 15 of which involved injuries to a person.

Police are regularly conducting both targeted and random enforcement at various locations, and while they would prefer to never catch anyone doing the wrong thing in a vehicle, they continue to see drivers operating their vehicles in ways that, if a crash was to occur, would significantly increase the likelihood and severity of any injuries.

Police remind drivers to drive to the conditions of the road at the time, obey the signed speed limit, ensure the vehicle they are driving is in a safe and roadworthy condition and to make sure they are in a fit state to drive.

Next phase of e-scooter reforms announced NEW laws have been introduced into Parliament to improve the safety of e-scooter and other Personal Mobility Devices (PMD).

The proposed laws will make it an offence for the rider of a PMD or bike to ride without due care and attention on a road-related area, such as a footpath, bike path or shared path.

This law already applies on roads and the proposed change ensures careless riding will be able to be enforced on other relevant infrastructure.

The proposed laws will also better align post-crash obligations for all drivers and riders, including ensuring drivers and riders involved in a crash stop, remain at the scene, render any medical assistance to any injured person, and exchange relevant information, such as name and address details.

Currently, these obligations do not apply consistently to PMD and bike riders on roads and paths. The proposed amendments will ensure that anyone involved in a crash has the same rights, no matter where the crash occurs.

The proposed amendments also introduce protections for vulnerable people who may not be able to exchange personal information with other people involved in crashes.

This protection applies to any person who feels that exchanging their personal information may expose them to harm and allows for them to report the crash to the police instead.

The proposed laws will be considered by Parliament and commence once passed.

This next phase of e-scooter reforms follows the release of the PMD Safety Action Plan

in mid-2022.

Since the release of the plan, the Department of Transport and Main Roads has delivered on 16 of the 18 actions, including a comprehensive package of road rule changes that began on November 1 last year, public education campaigns, and high-profile enforcement blitzes with the Queensland Police Service.

These reforms are nationleading and aim to strike the right balance between PMDs, as an emerging form of mobility, and the safety of all path and road users.

Transport and Main Roads Minister, Mark Bailey, said the next phase in e-scooter reforms build on the work done over the past 12 months and ensure consistency for all drivers and riders.

“Once passed, e-scooter and bike riders will have the same

responsibilities as all other drivers and riders,” he said.

“This includes an obligation to ride with care around other path users and consistent postcrash responsibilities, such as calling an ambulance and exchanging details.

“E-scooters are a great way to get around, but their social licence depends on users doing the right thing.

“These new laws ensure e-scooter riders will need to play by the same rules as the rest of us and significant penalties will apply for those that ride irresponsibly.

“The proposed new laws continue to improve the safety of all path and road users in Queensland and I am proud of the nation-leading role Queensland continues to play in the regulation of e-scooters and other personal mobility devices.”

Grants available for Australia Day community events FEDERAL Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann, is inviting local community organisations to apply for funding to host Australia Day 2024 community events.

Applications for the National Australia Day Council’s (NADC) Australia Day 2024 Community Events Grants program are open.

Mr Neumann said Australia’s local government and community sectors played a vital role in Australia Day, providing their communities with opportunities to reflect, respect and celebrate.

“Grants are again available to all local councils, state government bodies and not-for-profit organisations, including service clubs like Rotary and Lions,” he said.

“Organisations who received an Australia Day 2023 community grant are eligible to apply again.

“Event hosts can apply for a fixed grant of $10,000 to deliver events on Australia Day that use the NADC’s ‘Reflect. Respect. Celebrate. We’re all part of the story’ messaging. The maximum available grant is $15,000.

“Applicants that collaborate with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to incorporate activities that reflect, respect and celebrate their history and culture will be eligible to apply for an additional $5,000.

“Submissions close on October 31 so get your applications in!”

Grants will be awarded to eligible applicants on a first come, first served basis until the funding pool is exhausted. “They offer a great opportunity to learn more about our local history, and to embrace the cultures of local First Nations peoples.

“Applicants also need to demonstrate their event would be inclusive of, and accessible for, people living with a disability, for example, by having Auslan interpreters, ramp hires, accessible amenities or providing quiet spaces.

“A truly inclusive Australia Day means ensuring all Australians feel welcome to attend.

“Finally, applicants are encouraged to support local businesses and communities through the planning and delivery of the event, including by supporting local employment opportunities.”

Rattlers quartet don state Australian Company launches colours at masters carnival Anti-Magpie cycle helmet FOUR Brisbane Valley Rattlers players represented Queensland in the AFL Masters National Carnival at the Maroochydore-based Domino’s Park from October 1 to 7.

Matt Carr played in the Over 35 age group, and Paul Macknamara and Antonio Bowers played in two separate Over 55 teams while Tony McKew played in the Over 60 age group.

Queensland had an A team and a B team in the O35s, with the A team winning the division following an undefeated week while Carr played in the B team which placed fifth out of six teams.

Carr missed Queensland B’s first match which yielded a 7.7.49 to 1.2.8 win against Victoria Country/NSW, before he played in a 7.11.53 to 2.1.13 loss against WA/SA and an 11.8.74 to 2.4.16 loss against Tasmania.

Macknamara was part of the Queensland O55 team which placed second out of four teams in Division 1, while Victoria

Metro finished first.

Macknamara and his teammates began with a 4.4.28 to 3.0.18 win over Western Australia, before having a 3.6.24 to 2.3.15 victory against Tasmania.

In the match which ultimately decided top spot, Victoria Metro defeated Queensland 7.6.48 to 2.2.14.

Bowers played in Queensland’s Division 2 team in the O55 age group, with Victoria Country/SA finishing unbeaten after the three rounds while the other three teams had one victory and two defeats apiece.

Bowers and his teammates had a 10.2.62 to 3.4.22 loss to Victoria Country/SA in round one before enjoying a stunning come-from-behind 4.7.31 to 4.4.28 win against NSW. NSW kicked 4.1.25 to Queensland’s 0.1.1 in the first term before Queensland kicked 1.1.7 to NSW’s 0.3.3 in the second term.

NSW was kept scoreless throughout the second half while Queensland kicked 1.3.9

in the third quarter and 2.2.14 in the final quarter to steal victory.

There was no comeback from Queensland in its final match in Division 2 of the O55 age group, as Victoria Metro led by eight points at quartertime, 14 points at half-time and 19 points at three-quarter time before prevailing 5.2.32 to 1.1.7.

In Division 2 of the O60s, the Queensland team which included McKew placed second out of six teams while South Australia came first after being unbeaten.

South Australia defeated Queensland 7.8.50 to 5.4.34 after Queensland led 2.2.14 to 0.3.3 at quarter-time in the round one clash, and then Queensland beat Victoria Country 5.10.40 to 2.2.14 in round two.

Interestingly, Victoria Country scored all of its points in the second quarter.

In round three, Queensland was credited with a win on forfeit despite the scoreboard reading 4.1.25 to 2.5.17 in Northern Territory’s favour.

Lowood set to make a splash with swim school approved LOWOOD and Fernvale residents can look forward to the establishment of a swim school, following Somerset Regional Council’s approval of a development application for an indoor sport and recreation centre.

The application for a material change of use for land at 38 to 40 Prospect Street, Lowood, described the centre as a single storey building housing an eight lane, 25-metre swimming pool, adjacent to Lowood High

School.

Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee representative Cr Jason Wendt said the project was an indicator of the confidence in the region as a growth area in south-east Queensland.

“This is a great development for Lowood. The application showed thorough planning and the design is impressive. The development has taken visual aspects of other buildings in

the street into consideration of the building design, which will result in a consistent look and feel of the street,” Cr Wendt said.

“The proposal also includes provision for a future childcare centre at the rear of the site, and while this is obviously subject to a separate planning approval, it shows the developer has done his homework and sees the potential growth in the Somerset region.”

Council has 100 per cent success in flood submissions SOMERSET Regional Council has reached a milestone with all 69 submissions for flood reconstruction works lodged with Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) now approved, with the final two approvals advised this week.

Economic Recovery Sub Group representative Cr Bob Whalley said it was a significant moment for the region, with works expected to total more than $49 million.

“Council officers have done an excellent job in investigating and planning each submission, which will see a total of 221 restoration projects completed by June 2024,” he said.

“We are also grateful for the exemption granted by Queensland Deputy Premier the Hon Steven Miles MP which will allow us to continue with the appointment of contractors throughout the caretaker mode leading up to the election in March next year.

“This will allow us to continue work without interruption and complete all projects as quickly as is possible.”

In the lead-up to local government elections, councils enter a caretaker period during which they are prevented from approving new contracts above a certain dollar amount,

which would have excluded most of the flood restoration work. The exemption granted to Somerset Regional Council means the work can be continued without the added delay.

“Residents would have noticed contractors and Council crews working across a number of areas in region. Brown Contractors of Moore are currently repairing unsealed roads in the Mount Stanley, Harlin and Moore areas while A and M Civil Contracting of Fernvale are working to repair unsealed roads around Coominya, Esk and Fernvale,” Cr Whalley said.

“Other contractors and Council crews are currently restoring unsealed roads around Jimna, Monsildale, Kilcoy, Toogoolawah and east of Lake Wivenhoe.”

Win for Jamie Retschlag in masters boxing KILCOY’S Jamie Retschlag achieved a victory by technical knockout (TKO) as he fought in the Masters Boxing Tournament at Caloundra RSL on Saturday, October 7.

A member of the Roystonbased Bigfoot Boxing Club, the 42-year-old Retschlag competed in the 105kg heavyweight division.

Retschlag’s coach Gavin Sahlqvist said Retschlag put in a lot of hard work in preparation for the fight, which ended when the referee stopped it late in the third round.

Retschlag and Sahlqvist thanked the Bigfoot Boxing Club members who helped with sparring at training.

The date and place for Retschlag’s next bout are yet to be determined, with the crew from Bigfoot Boxing Club saying they looked forward to the next event.
