AFTER spending over five weeks with little to no cell service, residents of Delaneys Creek and the Woodford region are finally able to make and receive phone calls again.

Delaney local, Douglas Clark, reached out to The Sentinel last week, expressing his frustration that he and his neighbours had been experiencing since the December storms.

They had been unable to make or receive any phone

calls, regardless of their provider. “The bars show, we have wifi and can send and receive messages, but no phone calls,” he said.

Mr Clark and his wife had to travel to Morayfield or Caboolture for their phones to work again.

Some neighbours’ phones were connecting in Woodford, but with terrible reception. “I’ve made inquiries with my service provider who admits there’s a problem,” Mr Clark said.

Councillor runs for mayor SOMERSET councillor Jason Wendt has confirmed he will run for Mayor at the local government election on March 16.

The news comes after another Somerset councillor, Sean Choat, revealed in last week’s Sentinel that he too would stand for the position.

Cr Wendt said he was “excited and energised at

the prospect of leading the next Somerset Council team as mayor”.

Having served the last term as councillor after 20 years in business as a vet, Cr Wendt said he felt he had the knowledge and experience to lead a team of councillors who will be focused on the needs of the Somerset community.

Linville Rail Trail Trailhead masterplan is approved SOMERSET Regional Council has adopted a final concept masterplan for the Linville Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Trailhead, including a camping area, in a meeting last week.

Adoption of the masterplan will allow council officers to finalise detailed designs, before seeking further community consultation and external funding to implement the plan.

Council agreed to jointly fund the development of the masterplan with the Department of Transport and Main Roads in April 2022.

Initial consultation was carried out with the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Steering Committee, which was followed by extensive community consultation, including a drop-in information session and online campaign.

Two formal responses were also received from local organisations.

Support for the concept has been positive and feedback received has been included in the final concept plans.

THE Wamuran Lions Club has become the proud custodian of an 11-seater passenger mini-bus, generously donated by the now-dissolved Beachmere Lions Club.

Wamuran Lions Club president Brian McAtee said the heartfelt gesture allowed the club to extend its outreach and offer a valuable service to the community.

“The mini-bus will be dedicated to assisting those who lack access to transportation, ensuring

they can reach doctor and hospital appointments, partake in grocery shopping trips, and participate in school activities,” he said.

“Additionally, it will facilitate inter-club visits, fostering a sense of community.

“To emphasise our commitment to accessibility, we’re offering these transportation services free of charge.

“However, we would be immensely grateful for any donations that could contribute to the ongoing operational costs of the vehicle.”

While the mini-bus won’t be available for private events or personal use at this stage, Mr McAtee said it would undoubtedly make a significant impact in fulfilling the club’s community service goals.

After brand-new tyres were fitted last November, Mr McAtee said, “We express our deepest gratitude to the Beachmere Lions for choosing us as the recipients of this invaluable asset.

“Rest assured, we pledge to utilise it effectively, ensuring it serves our community to the fullest.”

Join in on Wamuran Lions’ sizzle THE Wamuran and surrounding community is invited to a BBQ at the Wamuran Sports Complex Hall from 5pm to 8pm on Friday, February 9.

The Wamuran Lions Club has organised the event to provide the chance for people to make new friends and form connections in a welcoming atmosphere.

Food and drink will be on offer, while tables and chairs are provided.

Wamuran Little Athletics will have their weekly session at the same time, which will enable attendees to show their support, in addition to socialising and enjoying a meal.

No RSVP or registration will be required to attend the community BBQ, and there will be no entry fee.

All money raised from the purchase of food and drink will be reinvested into the community, aiding families in need.

Floods wreak havoc in SEQ

SHOPPING Centres flooded, schools closed and rail lines shut, as heavy downpours wreaked havoc across the Moreton and Somerset region this week.

Up to 150mm fell in some parts of Somerset overnight.

Caboolture Rail Line was suspended in both directions following a flood at Bray Park, with buses put in place to

run between Petrie and Strathpine, resulting in delays of over 60 minutes.

A tree also fell on the line between Caboolture and Nambour, resulting in damage to the overhead lines and further delays, with buses also being deployed as replacements.

Over 60 roads were affected by flash floods and road closures across Moreton Bay and Somerset.

St Paul’s Lutheran

Primary School & Kindergarten announced early Tuesday morning they had to close due to flooding in the buildings, and Morayfield Shopping Centre had to be evacuated.

Other schools and businesses across the region followed suit, either due to floods, road closures or following government advice for everyone to stay home.

“I’ve made inquiries with my service provider (Aldi Mobile) who admits there’s a problem, but are unable

to do anything because the towers belong to Telstra,” he said.

“Telstra wouldn’t talk to me since they aren’t my direct providers, leaving me to rely on the website info, all which said there were no outages in the area.”

The Sentinel reached out to Telstra for answers.

A Telstra spokesperson investigated the matter further, resulting in the telco finding one of their base stations was not working properly.

“We had a closer, fresh look and it turns out the tower wasn’t working as well as it should, even though it was on-air and taking calls,” they said.

“We have done a reset of some key components which has improved 4G and 5G performance, but have also found an issue with one of our 3G antennas, which needs to be replaced.”

While the replacement of the antenna is scheduled to occur by Thursday afternoon this week, Mr Clark confirmed his service was back up and running,

hopefully putting an end to the month-and-a-half phone troubles of the area.

“I wish to thank you and The Sentinel for your time, kindness and patience in resolving this matter,” Mr Clark said.

“You certainly have achieved more than I did.”

The Telstra spokesperson encouraged any residents still experiencing issues with their mobile service later this week to contact their service providers.

THE Linville Hotel is celebrating after being named one of the six best pubs in Australia, for those on an RV road trip.

This historic Brisbane Valley pub has been shortlisted in the 2023 Best Pub Stay category in the Grey Nomad Awards, after thousands of public votes were received.

Awards Director, Kim Morgan, said the Grey Nomad Awards shine a light on coastal, inland, regional and remote Australia, by rewarding businesses and destinations which cater to mature age travellers in an exemplary way.

Ms Morgan said that, while the Best Pub Stay category had been part of the Awards since their inception five years ago, this was the first time that the public was given the opportunity to determine the six finalists from a shortlist of 16 nationally, which had

been identified by tourism leaders.

“Swapping to a public vote to determine finalists and winners really highlighted the things that travellers cherish when looking for a good pub – somewhere to stay on site with plenty of flat room, a tasty goodvalue meal, and importantly, friendly locals,” Ms Morgan said.

She said the Awards foster a better lifestyle for over

50s, while providing verified information which guides travellers’ decisions on where to visit, play and stay.

“With all regions in Australia ‘open’ fully to travellers for the first full year since the pandemic, 2023 proved to be an extremely busy and, therefore, challenging one, for those wanting to welcome grey nomads,” she said.

“Amidst such times, with often chaotic visitor numbers, pub managers and tourism operators had to dig deep to find the extra energy needed to maintain a focus on excellence. That is why we want to give a special shout out to the Linville Hotel and all the other finalists for demonstrating an unmatched commitment to excellence.”

National and state winners in all categories will be announced at a gala dinner celebration on Friday March 8, as part of the Art of Attraction Tourism Summit on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Meeting at Woodford museum THE Woodford Historical Society and Museum is welcoming contributions from the community, as the venue will host a gathering from 10am to noon on Tuesday, February 6.

All are welcome without needing to RSVP. The gathering will involve planning the year, while other aspects are research, museum displays, external displays, and planning bus trips and reunion visits.

Woodford Historical Society secretary Donna Grigor said there would be “discussions on what has been donated since the last meeting, correspondence, expos and seminars we’ve been invited to attend, visitor numbers to the museum, trying to answer questions the public have asked regarding our history, (and) grants we are applying for or have got”.

Donna said it would be good to see new members who are interested to share their knowledge and memories of the area.

“Any contribution, no matter how big or small, builds the story of our history,” she said.

“Some stories from the area have come in dribs and drabs from many different people, like the WW2 plane crash near Cruice Park.”

Woman shot dead in Morayfield POLICE have begun a homicide investigation after a woman in her 20s was shot and killed in Morayfield last Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to the Grant Road property just after midnight, following reports a woman had been shot.

Emergency services attempted to assist the woman, however she died at the scene.

The property and a related vehicle have been declared crime scenes, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.

An 18-year-old Morayfield man was assisting police with enquiries.

Police said that the man and woman were known to each other, but it was unknown if there was any relationship.

Anyone with information that could assist investigations was urged to contact police.

Mayoral candidate promises to be a voice for Somerset Wendt announces he’s joining run for mayor SOMERSET councillor Jason Wendt has confirmed he will run for Mayor at the local government election on March 16.

“After meeting my wife, whose family is fourth generation residents in the region, we moved onto her parents’ dairy farm where we began beef farming and raised our three boys,” he said.

work with the youth, to foster respect and care for others within the region through sports clubs, schools, arts and culture showcases.

Cr Wendt (pictured) has also been involved in volunteer positions through the P&C at the local school, and the Rural Fire Brigade as crew leader and fire warden.

Cr Wendt identified agriculture as the backbone of the region’s economy, saying “it’s what gives us our rural amenity we all enjoy, and this industry needs to

“We also need more business opportunities for existing and new businesses to grow, to provide local jobs for our residents and our children to stay and raise their families, to make Somerset a sustainable region,” he said.

“We can harness the best that our rural sector can produce, at the same time as leveraging the natural beauty of our environment and showing this to the world through tourism.”

Cr Wendt described himself as “not your typical politician”, saying he was a doer and not just a talker while he was committed to “making Somerset a thriving region, while maintaining the rural amenity we all love”.

“I’ll continue to advocate for larger block sizes to be a viable option in any future developments to maintain our natural environment and rural lifestyle,” he said.

Cr Wendt stressed that just

because a development style worked in the city, this didn’t mean it suited the Somerset region.

“Anyone who has been in business for a substantial amount of time realises that growth has to be balanced,” he said.

“While we can grow our region to accommodate the future, this has to be done in a way that keeps rates low.

“Roads are arguably the most essential service that

needs to be maintained by council, and I’m committed to driving a proactive approach to road maintenance and upgrades.”

Cr Wendt declared he has the credentials and experience “to make real change for the future of Somerset”.

“A vote 1 for Jason Wendt for Mayor is a vote for action, not just words,” he said.

“I’ll be your voice to lead Somerset forward.”

Four individuals honoured as “remarkable” by Moreton Bay Council

THE winners of Moreton Bay’s Australia Day Awards were revealed last Tuesday (January 23), with four remarkable individuals being honoured.

Martin Edge took home the Citizen of the Year Award, while Gail Robinson, Dan Broxham and Julie Kaeser all won the Mayor’s Community Spirit Award.

The aim of the awards is to recognise the outstanding

achievement and dedication of individuals to the Moreton Bay community.

Martin Edge is an artist from Strathpine who dedicates his time to promoting arts and culture, as well as increasing accessibility Citizen of the Year Award recipient Martin Edge

awareness. He is the ambassador for Autism Queensland and regular volunteer at the Pine Rivers Art Gallery, where he currently has an exhibition with a particular focus on supporting neurodivergent visitors.

Gail Robinson is another well known name, especially amongst the Maori and Pasifika communities. The Pomona local worked in Moreton Bay for 17 years and still makes regular trips to the Bay to mentor

parents and leaders through the Pasifika Families organisation. Her leadership has led to Australia’s largest Polynesian festival, Pasifika Vibes Festival, drawing over 10,000 visitors to Lawton every year. Beyond the Pasifika community, Gail runs cultural workshops that foster unity among diverse groups.

“I’m a bit humbled and embarrassed as I do feel quite ordinary...but then again I also think we are all extraordinary given the opportunity,” she said.

“The recognition did make me realise that the work I’ve done had actually achieved something and been taken on board by the Pasifika community, as well

“It is very exciting. It is an honour. I don’t do what I do to for recognition, but it is nice to be recognised,” Martin said.

“Winning this award can give people hope and send a positive message for people with a disability and those without a disability: don’t take life too seriously and be kind.

THE Kilcoy Race Club drew a big crowd on Australia Day, as there was a lot more to the occasion than the horseracing.

As expected, there was plenty of colour as many of the attendees dressed for the occasion, whether they had the races or Australia Day in mind.

Hot and humid weather was intertwined with a couple of showers, which forced the crowd to seek shelter on occasions.

The marquees included

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann and several councillors.

Kilcoy Race Club chairperson Con Searle thanked them for their support of the club, community and recreational grounds, while also noting their attendance occurred after they had other commitments earlier in the day.

A number of sports people including Allan Langer and Jimmy Maher also attended, and said they would be back again.

Shopping centre tick SOMERSET Regional Council has approved a major development application with conditions, in a council meeting last week, highlighting their commitment to supporting economic development across the region.

Somerset Regional Council confirmed it has approved a shop and office development on Brisbane Valley Highway and Simpson Street in Fernvale, subject to conditions.

The development would comprise five separate shop and office tenancies, with the tenancies designed to step down the site, consistent with the slope of the land.

The Walker clan and their friends enjoy the Australia Day races in Kilcoy.

New bridge for crossing

SOMERSET Regional Council has awarded a tender for the construction of a new bridge at the Scrub Creek Road crossing of the Brisbane River in Braemore.

The bridge will replace the existing causeway, severely damaged as part of the February 2022 floods, and is being replaced under the State and Federal Government’s Betterment program, with a contribution from Council. The bridge will also improve flood immunity for the Scrub Creek Road.

A financial support program for eligible year 11 and 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Queensland, the QATSIF Scholarship provides support to the educational costs of

This scholarship recognises students who excel in numerous aspects of school life including grades, attendance and raising awareness of Australia’s First Nations culture and history throughout the school community.

How to ease costof-living THE Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) Burpengary Green Wattles Branch will stage its first workshop of the year this Saturday, with a focus on lunchbox lessons.

The Burpengary Green Wattles will stage monthly workshops as part of a Life Skills program, which aims to help people learn basic life-long skills which may help them deal with cost-ofliving pressures.

This Saturday’s workshop will give ideas and tips on how to fill lunchboxes for work and school with simple, tasty and nutritious items.

Later this year, themes of the workshops will include feeding a family on a budget, vehicle maintenance, home maintenance, and gardening.

This Saturday’s workshop will start at 9.30am at the Burpengary Men’s Shed on Maitland Road.

Floods hit hospital staff CABOOLTURE Satellite Hospital was forced to close early on Tuesday (Jan 30), due to floods impacting the ability of staff to get to work.

Flooding across Moreton Bay and Somerset limited access for staff and patients to both Caboolture and Caboolture Satellite hospitals.

The Caboolture Hospital and Emergency Department remained open, with an emergency response having been activated, which would mean ambulances would be diverting care to alternate Emergency Departments, if needed.

FOUR-YEAR-OLD Lucy and her pouch pinkie joey had been known as locals in the Petrie/Lawnton area for a year.

Both were killed in a dog attack when she ventured away from the thin strip of trees meant to be her home, and walked into a large dog’s backyard.

Lucy’s home range covers an area that is highly fragmented, forcing her and other local koalas to navigate between houses and across major roads.

Lucy’s story, unfortunately, is predicted to become more common, as 125,000 new dwellings are planned in the Moreton Bay region by 2046, according to the SEQ Regional Plan.

Moreton Bay Koala Rescue vice-president Nicole Davies said the additional developments posed significant threats to the koala population.

This was not only due to the habitat loss, but the dangers of suburban life.

“The additional fragmentation of habitat makes it harder and harder for koalas to navigate the urban matrix to get from one patch to another,” Ms Davies said.

“The added cars and additional domestic dogs that result from the increased development increases the hazards koalas’ face, [with pool drowning being another threat].”

Mayor Peter Flannery told The Sentinel that, while managing population growth is a challenge, Council is ensuring that the development of housing and infrastructure is

balanced with the preservation of flora and fauna. “We’re one of the only local government areas in the country that is growing their koala population, and since partnering with Endeavour Veterinary Ecology in 2017, we’ve effectively doubled the koala population from 45 to 93 at The Mill,” he said.

“Council has a number of initiatives, including our Land Buyback for Environmental Purposes Program, which has secured more than 100 hectares of ecologically important land since 2020.

“This is in addition to Council’s ambitious goal of preserving 75 percent of Moreton Bay’s land mass from development and keeping 42 percent of the landmass for native vegetation.”

Ms Davies is still urging council to be more “koala friendly” with its planning and developments, saying most efforts made by local government are ‘bandaid’ fixes, which are put in place after too many koalas have already lost their lives.

“Narrow strips of vegetation (often a line of trees along roads) are supposed to act as a corridor, but many of the corridors don’t even line up.

Where the corridors don’t cross roads, they run along property boundaries with domestic dogs,” she said.

Cr Flannery reassured The Sentinel there are several additional efforts in place to preserve the population, including installing more fencing in high traffic areas and using the recent $173,000 federal funding to

use thermal drone images to better identify koala habitat in project areas.

“Council has already planted more than 3,600 koala habitat trees to establish the koala corridor within these reserves and the new data collected will assist us to target koala habitat enhancement works and help us prioritise our habitat enhancement efforts more strategically,” he said.

Regarding the solution of offsets, Ms Davies said these were not given enough thought or planning to be successful.

“It takes many years before trees can be used by koalas and they are often planted in a different area, which has no benefit to the koalas whose habitat is being impacted by the development. If habitat is offset for development, then

the offset plantings should be at a stage where koalas can actually use the trees BEFORE the trees are cleared for development,” she said.

Cr Flannery pointed out a separate big issue facing koala incidents, namely the lack of wildlife hospitals, which are sometimes two hours away.

“Council has allocated the use of its own freehold land parcel at Dakabin to build a wildlife hospital and is advocating for the State and Federal Governments to support the delivery of the much-needed facility,” he said.

“Council is looking forward to working with the State and Federal Governments to support the vital Moreton Bay Wildlife Hospital project to provide the care injured koalas desperately need.”

Last year Council was able to deliver 20 new fauna rope bridges and 10 underpasses, 10,000 metres of fauna exclusion fencing along roadsides and rolled out a record tree-planting program with 210,000 new trees.

Moreton gets $10m for 116,000 lime-green bins ● MORETON BAY ◗ Marina Gomide

THE City of Moreton Bay has received $9.6 million to invest into a garden organics collection service.

The funding will support the delivery of more than 116,000 lime-green lidded organics kerbside bins to households across the Moreton Bay region, as well as harmonisation for some existing bins, as part of a nation-wide push to make bin lid colours consistent.

These new bins are also to be made of recycled plastic.

Mayor Peter Flannery said being able to provide these organic bins has the potential to increase the region’s recycling rate by 25 percent and is the first step to a full food organics and garden organics (FOGO) waste collection.

“For a long time, locals have been calling for green bins to separate and manage their green waste, so I’m

thrilled to be able to make this a reality for them,” he said.

“This additional bin service is in line with our commitment to investing in sustainability and our local lifestyle, as our city’s population booms.”

The introduction of organics collection will fold out in two stages: Stage 1 involves starting a conditional opt-out Garden Organics (GO) service in early December 2024, while stage 2 involves the inclusion of food waste in the collection.

The start of this service is conditional on having a FOGO processing facility of sufficient capacity to process all materials collected.

Implementing organics collection is a vital step in propelling Queensland towards state and national resource recovery targets and will substantially reduce waste going to landfill,

reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create jobs.

Minister for the Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Leanne Linard, said the goal of FOGO collection service is to divert 80 percent of FOGO waste away from landfill and recycle at least 70 percent.

“Most garden and food waste currently ends up in landfill, where it emits methane gas and leaves significant organic resources

waste,” she said.

“Organic waste can be turned into high value compost, mulch, and soil products that can be used for a range of things, like tree planting, soil improvement, and revegetation projects.

“Through recycling, organic waste is put to good use, with the important nutrients and resources able to be reused and put back into the environment as compost.”

The funding was granted by the Miles Government as part of a $151 million commitment to help councils across Queensland implement FOGO waste collection services (GROW FOGO SEQ - The Growing the Recovery of Organic Waste via Food Organic Garden Organic South East Queensland).

This initiative is part of the Miles Government’s $1.1 billion 10-year Recycling and Jobs Fund.

Mary River cod recovery hits key milestone OVER 21,000 Mary River cod now inhabit South East Queensland waterways, marking a crucial step in the species’ recovery since the 2022 floods.

Coordinated by the Somerset Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association and the Queensland Department of Environment, Science, and Innovation, the initiative secured $85,000 in joint funding from the Australian and Queensland Governments through

Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Reflecting on the 2022 floods, Mr Neumann stressed their toll on riverbanks and biodiversity in waterways like the Mary, Burnett, Brisbane, and Bremer rivers, impacting iconic aquatic species.

Part of the Environmental Recovery Program, the

initiative, led by the Somerset Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association, aims to reinstate native cod in greater Brisbane catchments.

The Association’s president Garry Fitzgerald highlighted their mission for a self-sustaining Mary River cod population, thanking governments for vital funding.

The release, running from November 2023 to January 2024, introduced 21,000

Mary River cod fingerlings into regional waterways, aiding the recovery of one of Australia’s most endangered freshwater fish affected by the 2022 floods.

The comprehensive recovery plan involves releasing Mary River cod at 30 sites across greater Brisbane, aligning with their goal to reinstate native cod populations post-floods.

The Mary River cod, listed as endangered under Australia’s Environment

Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, holds significance as an iconic freshwater apex predator.

With the presumed extinction of the Brisbane River cod around the 1950s, this project focuses on restoring this species using

the Mary River cod, its closest living relative.

Growing up to one metre in length, the Mary River cod plays a crucial role in controlling pest fish populations, contributing to South East Queensland’s water ecosystems’

2024 Leadership Camp On Monday 15 January, our 2024 student leaders attended a 3-day camp at the Gold Coast Recreation Centre at Tallebudgera Beach, hosted by the Somerset Regional Council.

The camp focussed on developing leadership skills and learning to work with others through a range of team building activities. Students also had the opportunity to meet and have fun with other local school leaders from Toogoolawah and Lowood State High Schools.

Queensland Government says that by 2050 the region will need 330,000- 490,000 ML more, even with water restrictions.

The fact remains that just as Professor Flannery predicted, in south-east Queensland, dams will not be enough. In 2020, the State Government declared the continuation of the drought period from 2013-2020, nine successive years, after the wet season failed in 2012-13.

You can continue to build dams, but if it does not rain......well.

There are a number of measures that will need to be taken to ensure an adequate supply of drinking water – desalinisation plants, recycled water, domestic water tanks, and, potentially, enlarged and new dams. The question remains however: will it be enough?

SEQ Water advises us that, apart from a severe drought or a significant change in supply or demand, the water grid might supply the region with enough water until about 2040. The Millenium Drought forced the government to build resilience into the water supply system. After that, we will need new water sources to meet growing demand.

If that does not happen, then Professor Flannery’s prediction may still come true.

In Perth, they have relied on desalinated seawater over the past 5 years for around half their drinking water supply. This is expected to increase. I note

that recently, the Mayor of Moreton Bay observed that a desalination plant “was a waste of money”. Perhaps he also should have said, “Let the citizens drink recycled effluent, even if it tastes and smells like rotting algae”.

What’s the problem?

In regards to the story about the opposition to the proposed stage 4 of the Bruce Highway Alternative (Jan 16), I find it quite astounding that so many in the Elimbah community are outraged by this proposal.

My reason being that there was no groundswell of opposition when the Shaping SEQ 2023 planning update was released. This plan sees the whole Elimbah area rezoned to allow for future urban development.

So why weren’t people up in arms then? It’s like trying to shut the gate after the horse has bolted, as it stands to reason that, if you allow extensive urban development in an area, you are going to need an adequate road network to service that development.

If people had opposed the rezoning of Elimbah when they had a chance, then maybe the new road could have followed an alternative western route preferred by protestors, but as it now stands, such a route wouldn’t provide suitable connections for the 3000+ new homes planned for the area.

Somerset to increase budget to $151 million SOMERSET Regional Council’s budget for 20232024 will increase, following amendments made as part of the budget review process.

At the Ordinary Meeting on January 24, CEO Andrew Johnson said council had approved changes, which would result in overall budgeted expenditure of $151 million.

“In June 2023, council adopted a $125 million budget, which was the largest Somerset budget since the 2011 flood repairs,” he said.

“We have made several adjustments, primarily due to 2022 flood recovery works under Commonwealth State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

“These are some of the largest projects on our books, including the construction of the new

Scrub Creek Road bridge, and they require significant funding to undertake the work required.

“Other changes approved as part of the budget review include preliminary funding for the $10m upgrade of Muckerts Lane and McCulkins Lane, which is jointly funded with the Australian Government, additional funding for major upgrades on Lowood Minden Road, funding irrigation upgrades at Kilcoy racecourse, the new

Highland Street path in Esk, and more.

“The vast majority of budgeted expenditure is on externally funded flood restoration and capital projects.

“The change in the budget is also reflective of the dramatically increasing costs of materials, services and supplies, which would come as no surprise to many residents.

“We are still expecting a one-off operating deficit of around 4 per cent of operating revenue for 2023-2024 and we have put in place changes to the way we operate to help ensure that we produce long term modest surpluses going forward.”

I was somewhat dismayed at your characterisation of professor Tim Flannery who in 2007, in good faith, predicted water shortages, and, shortly thereafter, the Millenium drought arrived.

That prediction, “Even the rain that falls isn’t actually going to fill our dams,” continues to create a great source of merriment for those who see flooding rainfall that fills dams, as an indication that a leading researcher into climate change did not know what he was talking about. It has now been used for nearly a decade as a go-to statement for every climate denier, in particular those of the Murdoch media and their hangers-on to sow mischief and misinformation.

As a whole, Australia has a very low annual average rainfall of 419mm or 16 inches a year according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Declining water consumption in most of Australia has stalled dambuilding in recent years. In south-east Queensland, the population is set to soar from 2.8 million, today, to 5 million in 2050, and water consumption is expected to climb with it. The region mirrors not only what has happened historically elsewhere in Australia, but also what’s happening across the world.

Look here and you see humanity’s past and its future. South-east Queensland consumes about 440,000 ML a year. The

WEASEY’S PROPERTY REPORT THERE is unanimous agreement on the existing shortage of properties for sale and rent, which has been a major driver behind the rise in house prices and the soaring rents observed in recent years.

Conversely, the state of new dwelling construction is subject to a mix of opinions and statistical interpretations.

While the government has set a target of constructing 1.2 million homes over the next five years, it is predominantly private companies and builders who bear the risks of implementation. And the vitality of the new-detached house sector needs individual buyers, who will play a pivotal role in

achieving the government’s target by 2029. Factors such as the surge in borrowing and finance costs for prospective buyers, stemming from the Reserve Bank of Australia’s increase in the benchmark lending rate from 0.1 percent to 4.35 percent, have contributed to keeping construction activity in the residential sector below historical averages. Additional challenges include elevated building material expenses, labour shortages, adverse weather conditions, and insurance costs.

In 2023, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) recorded over 4,100 construction

corporate failures, partially explaining why the construction industry topped the list in a wave of redundancies, averaging 11,900 retrenchments each quarter between November 2022 and August 2023.

The Housing Industry Association (HIA) notes that the 2024 building commencement tally is the lowest since the fiscal year 2013, posing challenges for builders already contending with weakened profit margins, and increasing competition for customers. HIA Chief Economist Tim Reardon describes the situation as a ‘very different dynamic from what we’ve seen over the past

The price of onions had been on the rise, after some unseasonal wet in the southern growing regions along the NSW/ Victorian border.

Those onion growers in Queensland were looking forward to some good prices ,as only occurred every few years.

You’d get a barely viable price for a few years and rely on the occasional spike to pay down debt or for some newer equipment.

But this rumour flattened that price spike.

Apparently, one of the big supermarkets was bringing onions in from New Zealand

(or California or Chile depending on who was spreading the rumour).

As soon as the price collapsed, it was amazing that the big supermarket buyers scooped up truckloads of onions.

We never found out if the onions actually came into Australia.

After I came home with a disappointingly small pocketful of moolah, I happened to check at the local supermarket - and the retail price of onions didn’t move down a cent.

So you might now understand why farmers are up in arms about supermarket pricing, which

has led to the federal government ordering the ACCC, supposedly fighting for consumers, to run the ruler over the whole supermarket pricing model.

Supermarkets argue that they just follow the market prices.

But for the last two decades the majority of the biggest fruit and vegetable lines are sold direct to supermarkets or food processors (or their corporate agents), bypassing the ‘open’ markets at Rocklea, Flemington (Sydney) or Melbourne’s big new market north of that city.

Supposedly that should lead to transport efficiencies reducing costs - and perhaps consumer prices.

There’s a big issue in how transparent all this costing is,

which is what the ACCC is to look at.

But I’d suggest they need to look carefully at two issues - rebates and discounts.

The actual price of your potato or onion or apple is actually subject to a host of behind the scenes rebates, and discounts the farmer for quality (amazing how often produce quality is downgraded between farm and supermarket shelf) and wastage (if something doesn’t sell as much as the supermarket forecasts, the farmer rather than the supermarket can cop the loss).

The other big issue is the cost of the picky consumer - wanting produce out of season which means someone has to pay for coolroom storage for months after harvest, and consumers apparently wanting fancy packaging, which sometimes costs more than the actual produce.

Aussie trash Aren’t we lucky to have sporting giants of the calibre of cricketers Political Pat (Cummins) and Sandpaper Steve (Smith) to tell us how to think and act as Australians.

Cummins trashed our national team’s sponsors, but wasn’t satisfied with using his captaincy status to push a green political barrow. He went on to trash Australia’s national day.

He was supported

by Smith who lost the captaincy when he showed all the leadership qualities of a lemming during Sandpapergate.

These two blokes are excellent cricketers but their main claim to fame is fast becoming their ability to be political activists with egos bigger than their baggy greens.

Unfortunately, they are totally backed by their equally politically inclined and gutless employers, an organisation that used to be called Cricket Australia.

Neither cricket nor Australia can have any respect for this mob. They

Farmers are doing their bit, being more productive.

In the last couple of decades 50 percent more corn is grown off every stalk due to better varieties and better agronomy for less inputs (water, fertiliser etc). Same with much of the produce you grow.

Farmers have had to invest heavily to gain that productivity, but the rewards don’t appear to be fairly shared.

It’ll be interesting to see what the ACCC finds, but they’ll have to dig deep, including into the source of the market rumour mill.

According to Susi Tegen, Chief Executive of the Alliance, life expectancy is lower in remote areas, with a 1.4 times higher burden of disease compared to major cities.

Rural generalists, crucial for multidisciplinary rural healthcare, now have access to incentives up to $21,000 a year, encouraging those with advanced skills in mental health, obstetrics, surgery, emergency medicine, First Nations health, and anaesthetics to apply.

The Alliance said it was critical to reverse the decline in the rural doctor workforce to ensure equitable healthcare access for the 30 per cent of Australia’s population in rural, remote, and regional areas.

Fed Government launches price-gouging investigation LOCAL supermarkets in the Ipswich, Somerset Region and Karana Downs area will face increased scrutiny, following the initiation of an investigation into grocery prices by the Albanese Labor Government.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will conduct a 12-month inquiry, marking the first of its kind since 2008, with a focus on assessing the competitiveness of retail prices and addressing allegations of price gouging within the supermarket sector.

The inquiry is a component of the government’s broader strategy to promote competition and reduce essential costs for Australians.

It involves a thorough examination of the supermarket industry, evaluating its structure at various levels, tracking changes in competition since 2008, and analysing the impact of the growing

prevalence of online shopping.

The inquiry will also delve into the dynamics of small and independent retailers, pricing practices, factors influencing prices along the supply chain, and potential impediments to competitive pricing.

Additionally, loyalty programs and third-party discounts will be subject to scrutiny for their influence on market competition.

The ACCC is set to deliver an interim report in 2024 and a comprehensive final report in early 2025. These reports will offer meticulous findings and pragmatic recommendations to the government.

Concurrently, the government is allocating $1.1 million to consumer group, Choice, to facilitate quarterly price transparency and comparison reports over the next three years, beginning in the second quarter of 2024.

SHEPHERDSON and Boyd reported a yarding of 1255 head of cattle at their store sale on January 25. A quality run of cattle were yarded with improvements in price for all steer and heifer descriptions. In particular the biggest improvements were noticed in the weaner steer price and the heavier end of the backgrounder and trade feeder heifers, which was driven by replacement breeder operators.

Sport Sign-on day Bronze caps for Masters duo in the 50m breaststroke, “It’s also fun to let the ‘city’ for Wolves LOWOOD seventh in the 50m folk know that Masters swim THE Stanley River Wolves rugby league club will stage its sign-on day at the Woodford Showgrounds from 9am to 4pm this Saturday.

Registering can be done online at www. playrugbyleague.com, while the sign-on day provides the chance to meet the committee, purchase uniforms and merchandise, and enjoy a sausage sizzle and a drink at the canteen.

Games and drills with senior players will take place from 9am to 11am, while there will also be boot fitting/orders from Intersport Redcliffe.

Under 6s will receive a ‘Welcome to the Wolfpack’ kit, after registration is fully paid.

The kit will include playing shorts, socks, a training tee, custom ball, boot bag and sticker.

Kilcoy Golf open day FEBRUARY will provide exciting opportunities for golf in Kilcoy.

The February competitions begin this Saturday, with the regular Kilcoy Exchange Hotel 9-hole 2-ball Ambrose, with tee-off at 2pm.

This is followed by an 18-hole 4BBB Stableford the next day, which is the Kilcoy Open Day. Weekday golfers can tee off at 8am next Wednesday (February 7) for the regular Wednesday competition, which will be an 18-hole Stableford game.

A variety of formats is on the calendar for other games, with details available on the club website, team app and fixtures book.

LOWOOD & Districts Swimming Club president Stephanie Sippel and coach Karin Reddecliffe recently received their Bronze Masters Queensland Excellence caps for top-10 placings in the state.

Stephanie swam in the 35- to 39-year age group, while Karin swam in the 75- to 79-year age group, as about 25 clubs and several hundred swimmers took part in the Masters event at the Miami Swimming Club last February.

Among the Queensland swimmers, Stephanie placed third in the 200m breaststroke, fifth in the 100m breaststroke, sixth

backstroke and eighth in the 100m freestyle.

Karin placed third in the 50m backstroke and 200m breaststroke, and fifth in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, among the Queensland contingent.

Karin also placed seventh nationally, in the 200m breaststroke.

Stephanie and Karin said one thing they liked about the Masters competition was the lack of pressure, apart from what they put on themselves.

“It is really nice to connect with other mature swimmers at these meets and I enjoy just swimming with the wider community,” they said.

Stephanie said she was pleasantly surprised to earn a bronze cap in her first season of Masters, and would continue to train with the Masters squad, along with entering a few meets to gauge her improvements and keep promoting swimming.

Karin said, “I was totally surprised that I had swum that well and that there were awards for placing in the top-10 in my age category.”

Karin said she wanted to continue competing and working to better her times, while she also wanted more of Lowood’s Masters swimmers to compete.

Australia Day races enthral crowd at Kilcoy Plenty of action on and off the race track at Kilcoy meet on Oz Day THE Kilcoy Race Club was abuzz last Friday as the Australia Day races provided an array of activity including horse races, sprints, mini trots and dressing up.

Amid the sweltering heat and humidity, there were a couple of showers, which fortunately did not disrupt proceedings as the track maintained a Good 4 rating.

Kilcoy Race Club chairperson Con Searle thanked all patrons and the racing fraternity for helping to make the day a success.

Last Friday was the first time two Open Kilcoy Gifts were run, with Mr Searle saying he believed the Ladies Kilcoy Gift was the first run in Queensland.

While the Open Men’s final 120m was won in sensational style by up-andcoming sprinter Paul Boland, the Open Ladies final 120m had a dead heat finish between Acacia Wohlsen and Elizabeth Melrose.

“They had the crowd on their toes as they fought out the finish,” Mr Searle said.

“It’s so wonderful to see

athletes – both older and younger – competing.

“I admire them for their tenacity and determination to achieve their aims.

“The fabulous mini trots are such a drawcard for both young and young-at-heart to enjoy.

“It gives our club such happiness to see those young drivers and their ponies competing for the enjoyment of all.”

As for the five horse races, Mr Searle said “all winners, although at good odds, were well supported with spirited betting on all races all day”.

The opening race was 800m and was won by the ninth favourite in a field of 11, as one length separated the winner from the runner-up.

The winning horse, Massabielle, was trained by Tony Haydon and ridden by Nathan Thomas.

Race two was 1500m, with the Wayne Nugent-trained and Sariah Champkinridden Bie’res winning by 1.3 lengths, after being the fourth favourite in a field of 12.

With light rain falling during the 1200m race, one of the equal-favourites won by 3.8 lengths in a field of eight.

The winning horse, Best Song, was trained by Leigh Wanless and ridden by Justin Stanley.

The final two races were

1100m, with a field of 11 each time.

In its first race after a 327-day spell, the Ben Langtrained and Adin Thompsonridden Autumn Bloom won by 2.3 lengths, after being the equal-seventh favourite.

Johanna McGrath rode the third favourite in the final

race, Masterplan, to a fivelength victory, while Brad Stewart was the trainer.

“I look forward to Australia Day 2025 with a much bigger promotion and a larger Kilcoy Race Club Australia Day with add(ed) festivities that will be announced during the year,” Mr Searle said.

Award win for Woodford Golf Club THE Woodford Golf Club took out an award last week, courtesy of Golf Australia QLD. The award, titled ‘My Golf Centre Term 3’, was presented at the Woodford golf venue on Wednesday January 24.

Woodford gained the accolade due to its program for juniors aged 4 to 16 years.

The junior program began

in Woodford about two years ago, shortly after Dean Dagan took on the role of golf pro at the Woodford Golf Club.

Dean and fellow staff member Michael Brodie were prominently involved in the program, which involved all aspects of golf, including chipping, putting, bunkers, long game, short game, and on course play.

In the past six months,

Michael conducted Wednesday clinics from 3.45pm to 4.45pm.

There were also four free clinics, with more than 10 participants in each as ages ranged from 4 to 18 years.

“The purpose of our program is to grow our junior membership, which has expanded from 20 juniors a year ago with now over 40 members,” Dean said.

THE Burpengary Brumbies recorded a 19-run first-innings win against Bracken Ridge in a hardfought Queensland Sub Districts Cricket Association (QSDCA) B1 contest at the Burpengary-based James Worthington Oval.

With the game played over two Saturdays, the visitors resumed last Saturday at 3/38, having faced 30 overs on day one after dismissing the hosts for 127 in 39.5 overs.

Burpengary had been soundly placed at 1/49, before crumbling to 8/106, followed by a crucial ninth wicket partnership of 21.

Aston Helliwell top-scored for the Brumbies with 39 at number five, while captain Stephen Helliwell was next best with 31 at the top of the order.

Thomas O’Connor (4/14), Praveen Sai Balam (3/33) and Lachlan Rickards (2/19) bowled superbly for Bracken Ridge.

Angus Sturt-Bray scored just four runs off 72 balls at number three for Bracken Ridge on day one, before retiring not-out.

The visiting team fell to 7/55 last Saturday, before a 35-run partnership set up a tight tussle for first-innings points.

The final three wickets

fell at 90, 99 and 108 as Sai Balam held firm, before finishing unbeaten on 29 from 110 balls.

Burpengary’s seven bowlers were very tight, as there were 28 maiden overs in Bracken Ridge’s innings, which comprised 74.5 overs.

Troy Brown was the destroyer with 6/16 from 16 overs, while Marley Helliwell had 2/14 from 13.

Nathan Gould had 1/9 from 9.5 overs after capturing the final wicket.
