Run the air conditioner without wasting energy

F

ew people can make it through the dog days of summer without turning on their air conditioners. Men and women concerned about the environment and conserving energy may try to avoid using their air conditioners, but doing so on especially hot days can be challenging and potentially even deadly.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that roughly 600 people die from complications related to extreme heat each year.

Heat stroke can result when a body overheats after prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures. The Mayo Clinic notes that the condition is most common in summer and that a lack of air conditioning during periods of sustained hot weather is a risk for heat stroke.

Conserving energy during summer is a noble pursuit, but people should not jeopardize their health in an effort to conserve energy. Air conditioners might not be the most eco-friendly appliances, but there are ways to run them without wasting energy.

• Use a window unit or zoned system overnight. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that central air conditioners are more efficient than room air conditioners, which are typically installed in windows. But central air conditioning systems that are not zoned may be cooling empty rooms overnight. Apartment dwellers may find window units less wasteful, The Covington News | February 2021

while homeowners who can afford to install zoned air conditioning systems may rest easier knowing they are only paying to cool certain parts of their homes overnight. Zoned systems come equipped with programmable thermostats that homeowners can adjust when they go to bed, ensuring they won’t be cooling empty living rooms and basements overnight.

• Have units serviced before summer begins. Well-maintained central air conditioners will work more efficiently. Routine maintenance of air conditioning systems will ensure that systems aren’t working harder, and therefore consuming more energy, than necessary to cool a home.

• Let fans and air conditioners work together. The DOE notes that using fans and air conditioners simultaneously is an effective way to circulate cool air throughout a home. By running both fans and air conditioners at the same, the air conditioners won’t

have to be run as long or as hard as they would if no fans were turned on.

• Conserve energy in other ways.

Because the dangers of heat stroke and heat exhaustion are so considerable, men and women should never keep their air conditioners off on hot days simply to conserve energy.

Finding safer alternatives to conserving energy on hot days can be just as effective and won’t put consumers’ health at risk. Unplug appliances that are not being used and prepare cold dinners so ovens that can make home interiors feel hotter won’t need to be turned on. In addition, take advantage of the longer daylight hours in summer and keep lights off until the sun goes down. These are safe ways to conserve energy on hot days.

Exploring options for hospice, palliative care

T

he opportunity to live independently is a goal for many people as they plan for retirement. While there’s much people can do to plan for financial independence in their golden years, health issues may arise that can make it hard for aging adults to get through the day without a little help.

Palliative care and hospice are sometimes mistaken as the same thing, even though they’re quite different. Learning about each option can help adults identify which option is best for them should they one day require daily assistance.

Palliative care Palliative care may be available at any time for individuals with serious and potentially life-threatening conditions. According to Healthline, palliative care is focused on improving the overall wellness of individuals with serious illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, COPD, and other chronic illnesses. Since it is based on individuals’ needs, palliative care can differ from one person to the next.

WebMD says a palliative care program frequently aims to ease pain and help with other problems, including improving comfort. It is used in addition to other treatments.

Palliative care also can help patients and their families if an illnesss makes it more difficult to get around, leads to depression or adversely affects the family, including caregivers.

Hospice care The National Institute on Aging notes that hospice care may be recommended when it is no longer possible to cure a serious illness or when a patient opts out of certain treatments. Like palliative care, hospice provides comprehensive comfort care and family support. However, attempts to cure the person’s illness are stopped in hospice. Hospice is typically recommended when a person with a terminal illness has around six months or less to live.

When people hear “going into hospice” they may think this means entering a facility. However, hospice can take place in many different settings, including at home, in a nursing home, in a hospital, or even a facility that specializes in hospice care.

Both palliative and hospice care bring together a team of health care professionals with special skills. This team can include doctors, nurses, social workers, therapists, spiritual advisors, and trained volunteers.

Everyone works together to address

patients’ emotional, medical and spiritual needs.

The main difference between palliative and hospice care is when each is offered to a patient. Palliative care can be available at any time, regardless of illness stage, prognosis or life expectancy. Hospice care is only available when an illness is no longer responding to treatment. It is sometimes known as end-of-life care. However, a person can come out of hospice care should his or her condition begin to improve.

Patients and their families can discuss the options of palliative and hospice care with their health care teams. While these types of care have become much more accessible in recent years, they may not be available everywhere. It also pays to ask questions about health insurance coverage to determine if the costs of palliative or hospice care will be covered by a provider. A long-term care policy also may be an option to cover palliative services.

Leave tree work to professionals

F

or the “do-it-yourself ” homeowner, outsourcing tree work may seem like an unnecessary expense. The costs of doing tree care on your own can also be high. With damaged property, hospital bills, and a ruined landscape these expenses aren’t cheap.

“Most homeowners simply don’t have the tools, knowledge or experience necessary to safely attempt their own tree work,” says Tchukki Andersen. Tchukki is a BCMA, CTSP* and staff arborist with the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA). “We hear many unfortunate stories each year of homeowners getting severely injured or killed while attempting this dangerous work on their own.”

Here are three reasons homeowners should leave tree work to the professionals: Lack of Knowledge and Training Safe tree work requires extensive knowledge of tree physics and biology, which takes years of experience to acquire.

For example, felling a tree in a controlled manner is not as simple as cutting through the trunk with a chain saw. It requires establishing a drop zone, precise cuts and sometimes guiding the tree safely to the ground. When homeowners attempt this, many are injured or killed when the tree falls in an unexpected direction.

are also unpredictable. Severing the trunk of a fallen tree from an up-ended root plate releases tension, which may be strong enough to pull the stump and root ball back into the hole, trapping anything or anyone nearby underneath it. Other hazards may be invisible to the untrained eye. Rotten trunks and limbs, pest and fungal infestations and other diseases and defects can only be identified and treated by an experienced tree-care practitioner.

Poor Situational Awareness Even homeowners who know their way around trees may still fall victim to nearby hazards.

Electrical wires are a common situational hazard in tree work; many trees grow near power lines and have their branches, leaves, and limbs entangled in live wires. Each year, a number of amateur tree workers are seriously injured or killed. This usually occurs when they come into contact with an energized line, directly or indirectly, through tools or tree limbs.

Navigating this danger is tricky, even for professionals, and should never be attempted by homeowners under any circumstances.

Attempting do-it-yourself tree work is bad enough, but some homeowners go one step further and try to finish the job alone, which further impairs situational awareness. If you do try

to do any of the work, always make sure there is at least one other person working with you. Even trained professionals work in teams!

Improper Use of Tools Homeowners who use incorrect, faulty or complicated tools may hurt themselves and others while attempting tree work.

Chain saws, for example, are incredibly dangerous and easy to misuse. A common mistake is to use a dull chain, which forces the operator to use excess pressure, causing them to lose control of the saw. Many homeowners also make the mistake of using the chain saw to cut branches on the ground. This can result in chain saw kickback – and injuries – when the bar tip hits the dirt or other foliage.

Misused ladders are another common source of injury. Using a ladder that is too short, set on unstable ground, or supported by a faulty limb can easily result in the homeowner falling – often fatally – from the tree.

Falling limbs can also knock out a ladder from under the homeowner as well.

Tree work may also require tools the average homeowner does not own. Stump grinders, wood chippers, and aerial lifts are just a few examples of complex machines that only a trained arborist can handle.

Local funeral home adapts during pandemic

C

aldwell & Cowan Funeral Home opened its doors in 1933 in Porterdale, Georgia, moved to Floyd Street in Covington in 1937, and in 2017 opened in our new facility at 1215 Access Road, Covington.

We now serve our community primarily from our Access Road facility, although our Floyd Street location remains available for use. Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home offers traditional funeral services with burial following, traditional services with cremation following, and memorial services either at our location or at the venue of your choice.

Our Access Road facility adjoins our cemetery, Lawnwood Memorial Park, which is a perpetual care cemetery with ground spaces for interment, a mausoleum with inside and outside crypts, and a columbarium for ennichement of urns.

Dogwood Hill Crematory is our private crematory, with private meaning that we only cremate for families we serve, not for other funeral homes or outside third-party providers.

We are a true full-service combination, with your loved one remaining in our care at all times.

Additionally, Caldwell & Cowan offers virtual service arrangements through Zoom guided by one of our

professional funeral directors, or service arrangements by telephone. We also have the ability to stream services online virtually from our funeral home chapel.

With the onset of COVID-19 in our world, the picture of funeral service has seen quite a change in the past year.

For many generations, funeral services have traditionally been events held in a church or funeral home chapel with a large number of family and friends in attendance.

In 2020, with restrictions imposed by governmental authorities regulating the size of gatherings permitted in a single space at one time, many families chose to forego the larger service. With information about COVID-19 being so scattered and uncertain among scientific and political leaders, our funeral directors and staff at Caldwell & Cowan felt it was our duty to follow the best and safest course of action possible, in order to give our grieving families the best opportunity to say their final goodbye to their loved one. At the same time, we had a responsibility to keep those family members, their friends and visitors, and our own staff, safe and well. To that end, we began using a Hydroxyl Generator in the building to aid in killing germs and viruses, and

utilizing a spray disinfectant system to sanitize our entire building after every visitation and service.

Trying to think outside the box, we have conducted services as outside gatherings at graveside, poolside at a private residence, open air at Chimney Park, and in a covered pavilion on a family farm.

We have also held services in the parking area under our porte cochere at our Access Road facility.

While not an entirely new thing (we understand that California was the first), the “drive-by funeral” became something newly seen in our area.

We saw several examples of this as family members, standing outside, acknowledged friends’ condolences as they drove by and waved or called messages from their car windows.

Unconventional maybe, but our goal was, and always has been, to provide whatever is feasible to allow mourners to have the service they so need for their loved one at that time.

Everyone is hoping and praying that the creation of the COVID-19 vaccines will mark the end of the virus that has turned us all upside down for so long. We’re all ready for that — actually way beyond ready for that.

Pick the best local bank

It can also be about finding the right insurance agent.

Independent Agent, Captive Agent, Insurance Broker — What’s the difference?

When you start your search, you can pick an independent agent or a captive (or direct) agent. An independent agent, like Stan Edwards of Jones, Ewing, Dobbs and Tamplin, Inc. in Covington, may sell policies from many different companies.

A captive agent sells insurance for only one company. Independent and captive agents represent insurance companies and receive a commission from the insurance company for the sale of its policies.

• Credentials — Many agents and brokers will have letters behind their names on their business cards. These represent designations or credentials they have earned from various insurance groups or associations. Ask them what these letters mean and what they had to accomplish to earn the credential.

• Complaints — While you’re checking whether the agent and the company are licensed, also check to see if they’ve had complaints filed against them. For the company, you can check the NAIC’s CIS, call your state insurance department or contact the Better Business Bureau.

• Financial Strength of the Company — When evaluating a company, you also want to check its company financial rating.

What to Expect What should you expect when you visit the agent’s office to purchase coverage?

Choices: If you’re using an independent agent, you’ll have choices of companies and coverages. Evaluate your needs and the options to make sure you are getting the proper coverage best suited to your situation.

Honest Sales: You shouldn’t feel pressured to choose an agent, an insurance company or a quote. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Answers: If you have any questions about the quote or coverages you need, ask your agent and keep asking until you are satisfied.

Keep in mind, not all insurance companies use agents. You can do business directly with many companies by purchasing coverage online.

ehicle maintenance schedules vary depending on manufacturer recommendations. In addition, the way a car is driven and the environment it’s driven in can dictate if routine maintenance like oil changes needs to occur more frequently or if belts and hoses need to be replaced sooner than manufacturers recommend.

Many people drive in ways that align with routine maintenance schedules. However, drivers who put excessive wear and tear on their vehicles may have to follow a “severe” maintenance schedule. According to the automotive information site Car Gurus, many manufacturers adhere to a 30-60-90 schedule, meaning certain items need to be inspected, changed or replaced at 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 miles. Certain vehicle parts wear out at predictable intervals, while others, such as rubber gaskets, windshield washer blades and tires, will degrade at irregular intervals.

It is generally recommended to speak with a mechanic and discuss driving habits to ensure vehicles operate efficiently and at peak capacity.

The following are some conditions that may necessitate frequent maintenance.

• Urban driving: Stop-and-go traffic in an urban setting can wear cars out more quickly than highway driving.

• Short trips: Frequent, short trips can take a toll on a vehicle. Again, this may be a problem for those who reside in cities or bustling suburbs.

Short trips of no more than five miles can contribute to an accumulation of water vapor that dilutes motor oil and adversely affects its efficacy.

• Heavy loads: Advanced Auto Parts says transporting or towing heavy loads can put more wear and tear on a vehicle. Loads can include cargo or passengers.

• Dusty or salty environments: Dust can accumulate in air filters and clog internal engine components. Similarly, living close to the coast and salt water also can cause car parts to rust or degrade quickly.

• Extreme temperature conditions: People who reside in extremely cold or extremely hot climates may find that their vehicles have to work that much harder to operate, reducing the life span of automotive fluids, parts (especially car batteries) and the overall vehicle unless action is taken.

According to the Mayo Clinic, poor oral health might contribute to various diseases and conditions.

Periodontitis is a severe yet preventable gum infection that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. But the threat of periodontitis doesn’t end in the mouth. The American Academy of Periodontology notes there’s a connection between periodontitis and several other diseases. While bacteria was long suspected to be the link between periodontitis and other diseases in the body, the AAP notes that recent research points to inflammation as the culprit that connects periodontitis with diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Diabetes The AAP notes that people with diabetes are at increased risk for periodontal disease, speculating that diabetes patients’ risk is higher because people with diabetes are more vulnerable to infections than those without diabetes. While that suggests periodontal disease is a byproduct of diabetes, the AAP notes that research points to the relationship being a two16 | Consumer Guide

way street. Periodontal disease may make it more difficult for people with diabetes to control their blood sugar, making dental hygiene an especially vital component of routine healthcare for people with diabetes.

Heart disease The AAP notes that research indicates periodontal disease increases a person’s risk for heart disease, with the inflammation caused by the former leading to the latter. People with existing heart conditions also may find that periodontal disease exacerbates those conditions. The Mayo Clinic notes that the link between heart disease and periodontal disease is not fully understood, but enough studies have been conducted for scientists to support the notion that the two are connected.

Can periodontal disease be prevented?

Periodontal disease is preventable.

A daily dental hygiene regimen that includes brushing after meals, flossing at least once per day and swishing with mouthwash are some simple, healthy habits that can prevent periodontal disease. In addition, the AAP recommends that people at increased risk for periodontal disease, including the elderly and smokers, should discuss their risk with their dental professionals.

Dental hygiene can do more for individuals than produce a mouthful of pearly white teeth. In fact, people who prioritize dental hygiene may lower their risks for various diseases.

lthough it seems like mortgages are a commodity and there isn’t much difference who you work with, nothing could be further from the truth.

Working with a local, direct lender is the best choice for most borrowers.

Real estate agents are highly motivated to keep transactions flowing and can be good sources of referrals for lenders with experienced loan officers who are known to get mortgages closed on time.

Working with a mortgage broker is another choice; however, a broker is an intermediary between the borrower and the lending institution and has no decision-making power. Brokers collect information from the borrower and submit to one or more lenders for consideration. Underwriting is handled by the lender and there is an additional layer between the parties.

This can slow down the flow of communications in a fast-moving transaction. Brokers don’t have much control over how a loan is processed, how long it will take, or if you will get final approval. This can lead to delays in closing and frustrations for all parties to the transaction.

Lenders operating online have increased their exposure with massive advertising campaigns to attract attention. Their advertisements often show homebuyers applying on their phones with an approval back in minutes. Too many people are disappointed to find out later in the process that their online approval wasn’t really valid.

The typical online lending model uses an automated, hands-off approach that has the borrower entering information via a smartphone or computer and an underwriting algorithm along with a credit check makes the decision on qualification. Consumers are usually left on their own to interpret how to answer the requests for information. As an example, data

on monthly income will be requested.

But how does the borrower know how to report income? It’s pretty easy if you are employed and receive a fixed salary. Someone with variable income from self-employment or with commission income may not enter the relevant information and later discover that the approval is invalid. Good underwriting practices, like review and verification of the consumer’s documentation, are not commonly done at the pre-approval stage.

Most experienced real estate agents don’t want to rely on pre-approvals from national or online lenders because they have seen too many deals blow up before closing. Agents like to have a local lender they are familiar with review the buyer’s information and issue a pre-approval based on solid underwriting practices. Selecting the right lender is a key element to a happy and low-stress real estate transaction. Benefits of spaying, neutering pets

O

ne of the most important aspects of welcoming a pet into a home is to be a responsible pet owner. Responsible pet ownership involves providing for the animal’s physical and emotional needs, making sure to keep the pet out of danger and providing love, affection and training.

Responsible pet ownership also includes a commitment to maintaining a reasonable pet population. Due to unchecked breeding, shelters are bursting at the seams with animals who have been found stray or were turned over by owners who are unable to care for them. The ASPCA says millions of cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized or suffer as strays every year. These high numbers are the result of unplanned litters.

Neutering, also known as spaying and neutering, can help keep animal numbers in check. American Humane says spaying is a general term used to describe the ovariohysterectomy of a female animal. Neutering is a general term used to describe the castration of a male animal.

However, neutering is often used in reference to both gen-

ders. Veterinarians perform these surgeries, which often result in the same-day release of pets if there have been no complications.

Many shelters require adoptable animals be neutered before they can be released to a new family. Pet owners can work with veterinarians to determine the best age for sterilization.

There are many great reasons to neuter pets that go beyond reducing overpopulation.

• Improves animal health: Spaying can help prevent uterine infections and breast cancer in female pets. Neutering males can prevent testicular cancer.

• Reduces unwanted marking/mating behavior: Female pets advertise that they are ready to reproduce by leaving scents (urinating), barking, meowing, and being more agitated during breeding season. Spaying can reduce these inclinations.

• Reduces the need to roam: Male animals will travel near or far to find a female. Once on the prowl, the animal runs the risks of injury from altercations with other animals as well as traffic. Such animals also may get lost.

• Responsible breeding: American Humane says 25 percent of shelter dogs are purebreds. Responsible purebred breeders have homes lined up before they breed. There’s no need to mate purebreds simply for the sake of continuing the lineage.

• Improved behavior: The ASPCA says a male pet might be less likely to mount other pets, people and inanimate objects after he’s neutered. Some aggression problems may be avoided by early neutering as well.

Neutering is a smart choice. After the surgery takes place, give the pet a quiet, safe place to recover and inhibit jumping or running for a few weeks. Also, try to keep him or her from licking the wounds. When the vet gives a clean bill of health, pets can resume living full, happy lives.

Chiropractic care can improve overall health

A

nyone who has experienced pain understands that it can be debilitating. Pain can make it challenging to manage everyday tasks and can affect relationships and physical and mental health in many ways. Pain medications were once the norm, but with the rise of the opioid epidemic, it may be wise to take a different approach to pain treatment.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the United States Department of Health and Human Services reveal that as many as one in five people received prescription opioids long-term for noncancer pain in primary care settings in 2016. While opioid use for pain does not always lead to abuse of these medications, opioid addiction has become a widespread problem across North America. These same agencies report that approximately 1,000 people are treated in emergency departments in the United States each day for misuse of prescription opioids.

Between 2016 and 2017, opioid poisoning hospitalization rates went up by 8 percent in Canada, resulting in an average of 17 hospitalizations each day.

Chiropractic care may be one avenue to pursue as a viable alternative to pain medications. While chiropractic manipulations are most often associated with back and neck pain, there are many different benefits — some of which may surprise those unfamiliar with chiropractic care — for this type of care.

• Migraines and headaches: Research shows that spinal manipulation can be an effective way to treat migraines, tension headaches and headaches that begin in the neck.

In clinical trials conducted at Macquarie University, 72 percent of migraine sufferers had noticeable or substantial improvement after a period of chiropractic treatment.

• Accident injuries: Chiropractors can assess musculoskeletal anomalies caused by motor vehicle accidents as well as slips and falls. Whiplash is a common issue in car crashes, and this may be addressed by a chiropractor.

• Anxiety and stress: The fight or flight mechanism that is activated when a person experiences stress and anxi-

ety can take its toll on various parts of the body. Because stress involves nerve impulses, chiropractors may be able to work primarily with the spine where these impulses originate to help release tension and nerve irritation. In addition, adjustments can improve blood circulation, which may help signal the brain to turn off its “rally to action” response to stressful situations.

• Fibromyalgia: Fibromyalgia is marked by widespread musculoskeletal pain in the joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. It can be combined with temporomandibular joint syndrome, or TMJ, as well as irritable bowel syndrome, among other illnesses. Chiropractors can remove subluxations, which are misalignments of the vertebrae in the spine and joints that lead to pain responses. A Florida State University study found that those with fibromyalgia who combined resistance training with chiropractic treatment two times a week saw improvements in their symptoms.

Chiropractic care may be an asset for pain management, as well as a way to improve overall health.
