Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe, and it remains a relatively undiscovered melting pot of Eastern and Western cultures.

Its urban fabric comprises a vast range of architectures, with structures by the ancient Thracians, the Romans, the Byzantines, as well as works from the Bulgarian medieval era, the Ottoman Empire, and the modern day, including the peculiar period of communist historicism and modernism.

Between the 9th and the 7th centuries BCE the Thracian tribe of the Serds established their settlement, known as Serdonpolis, at the location of Sofia’s current core. In the 1st century CE it was conquered by the Romans and renamed Serdica. Traces of Serdica can be found in the very centre of the city. The city preserved its characteristic features throughout the Byzantine periods, as well as during the two Bulgarian empires (10th and 12th-14th centuries).

Sofia

The name “Sofia” was first mentioned in the period between 14th and 15th centuries. In 1392 the city was conquered by the Ottomans. The pro-European political and cultural orientation that occurred after Liberation (1878) was a logical consequence of the Bulgarian National Revival, which began in the 18th century as a delayed transition from the Middle Ages to Modernity. The final phase of that revival was the establishment of public institutions and the governmental sovereignty. The lack of local experts led to the implementation of European urban design models, introduced by foreign specialists, predominantly from Central Europe.

The destruction caused by Second World War air raids broke the continuity of the formation of the city. The force of urbanisation and the increased migration gave new power to the urban development of Sofia and to the restructuring of its core in the postwar period. The political aim was to establish a representative centre, demonstrating the demarcation from the bourgeois past and the orientation to the socialist future. The master plan for the centre from 1947 introduced the Stalinist principles of urban design.

The inherited structures were reorganised to establish the Largo ensemble of buildings as a representative West axis, intended to underline the dominant position of Party House, the headquarters of the Communist Party, Council of Ministers, the Central Universal

Store, the Presidency and Balkan Hotel.

The dictate of socialist realism did not last long. The political changes in Bulgaria in 1956 and the following De-Stalinisation caused a prompt revival of the rationality of Modern architecture. The urbanism of the second half of the 1950s was focused on the intensive development of the city and the conversion of abandoned military territories into housing areas with public green spaces. From the 1970s onwards a big share of the new housing estates was concentrated over four clusters on the periphery of the city. The largest estates are Lyulin and Mladost in each accommodating more than 100,000 inhabitants.

The establishment of public models of governance and, since 2007, integration into the European Union have had a positive impact on the spatial organisation of the city, whose population today exceeds 1.3 million. The speedy realisation of underground public transport, the adaptation of the street network to current needs, the implementation of smart-city concepts, and the extension of the system of green areas all created fresh preconditions for the new urban and architectural image of Sofia.

St Alexander Nevsk Church

The cathedral church of the Patriarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church crowns Sofia’s sacral hill and is the dominating accent in the urban silhouette. Its location, role, size and characteristic shape have made it a symbol of the city. The architecture is based upon the Eastern Orthodox archetype rooted in Byzantine cross-dome temples from the 6th century.

The cathedral as a whole can be categorised stylistically as a Romantic interpretation in the spirit of the Byzantine cultural sphere, with elements and principles of Russian Classicism and Romanesque architecture.

Sofia

The Largo

The ensemble of buildings on Largo Square is the largest such group in the city and formed as the centre of political power. It was built in the 1950s on traces of the Decumanus Maximus of Ancient Serdica, underneath the city level. The architecture of the three massive buildings, which surround the square, is a Stalinist reading of Roman grandeur. On the north side is the Council of Ministers, linked to the Central Universal Store, a shopping cen tre said to be the largest of its era in the Balkans. On the south is the Presidency with the Sheraton Hotel next to it. The building at the centre of the symmetrical composition initially housed the Bulgarian Communist Party, and is still called Party House. Opposite this was a vast statue of Lenin, which has today been replaced. The concept of the entire complex was to demonstrate the power and sturdiness of the totalitarian State. Each of the three buildings surrounds an inner courtyard. The quiet courtyard of the President’s Office frames the well-preserved St George Church, an ancient rotunda that springs out of the remains of the Roman city. The rotunda is the only relatively well preserved building from the begining of 4th century.

Under Nezavisimost (or Independence) Square lie the ruins of the Roman city of Serdica. During the works for the Sofia metro, this Roman layer, 6-7 metres under ground level, was partially restored and shown in a new space conceived as a mul tifunctional hall. It was then covered by three flat glass domes with a maximum height of 2.1 metres, so as not to block the views to the square. The domes are located so that there is enough space to walk between them. They have a double curved geometry, made from a steel structure covered with glass panels. Though the skylights are rather flat, their pres ence radically changed the appearance of the square. These ‘reflective bubbles’ have brought a kind of futuristic, surreal quality to the surrounding Stalinist buildings, converting the location into the mise-en-scène of an anti-utopian film.

National Gallery, The former Palace The building was errected as the Seat of the Ottoman administration and as headquarters of the district governor. After National Liberation, the build ing was adapted to the needs of the re established Bulgarian State as a resi dence of Prince Alexander I Battenberg, in 1883.After WWII, the palace was used as the Seat of the Council of Ministers. From 1960s the building is used as National Gallery,

Det er offisielt språk i Bulgaria. Det bulgarske språket er det tidligste skriftlig dokumenterte slaviske språk. Den historiske utviklingen av bulgarsk språk begynner da det første alfabetet skapes midt på 900-tallet. Dette er det eldste kjente slaviske alfabetet. Alfabetet ble laget på grunn av behovet for oversettelse av liturgiske bøker fra gresk til gammelbulgarsk. Mot slutten av 900-tallet var det andre bulgarske alfabetet skapt, det kyrilliske alfabetet, som man bruker i dag. På denne tiden var Bulgaria sentrum for slaviske skrifter og kultur.
