Starting Something New Doesn’t Mean Starting Over: Women Who Leave Corporate to Find Themselves
W
omen are changing how they want to work. Gone are the days when they are sacrificing their professional, entrepreneurial dreams. According to the 2016 Kauffman Index of Start-Up Activity women make up 40% of new entrepreneurs. And, other research has revealed that 83% of working women report that they want their own business! Women are breaking away from traditional corporate roles to pursue their passions and find their purpose. And, along the way, they are also challenging many conventional ideas of what a successful career progression actually looks like. In this article, we will take a peek into the lives of women who have left corporate either by choice or attrition and learn how their new journeys have Sophisticated Sales
allowed them to explore in ways they would have never considered possible before.
A Mindset Reframe The corporate world has long been designed to promote a structured career path rewarding those with the greatest demonstrated ambition. For many, corporate represents years of hard work, hustle, long hours, and selfless dedication. But, more recently, an increasing number of women have started to question the narrative that success is derived from corporate life and are reconsidering their priorities. Now, women are realizing that real achievement goes beyond the confines of corner offices and board meetings.
Kim, a former Vice-President of Sales at a Fortune 500 company, shares her experience: “I thought I was at the top of my game. I had crawled my way to the top of the corporate ladder and after almost two decades of working in corporate, I realized that I had forgotten who I was as a person.” These feelings are not unique to Kim. After speaking with hundreds of women, we learned that many women find themselves on the mouse wheel of corporate and have little time to reflect on their own personal goals and desires. They begin to question if they will ever reach the ever-moving goal of how corporations define success. And, when they do, will they regret not allocating more time to other areas?
7
Skills Are Transferable Leaving behind a successful corporate career requires thought and careful consideration. It is a big deal! Most times, it involves taking a leap of faith and stepping into the unknown, and many times without a parachute. It is easy to forget that you have very valuable skills. Everything may feel foreign and new and just really uncomfortable. But, like anything different, the more you jump in and learn, the abnormal will begin to feel more normal. The skills that you have previously refined do not abandon you. True, they may not be a perfect match for your new path, but at the core, the skill is the same and can be transferred to your new career. Kristin, a former COO, shares her epiphany. “I had spent so many years designing processes and ensuring quality control within my organization When I first started my own business helping smaller companies with onboarding plans I felt very overwhelmed. I was an introvert and had a hard time speaking with others about what I was doing and why they should work with me. Then, I reminded myself that I had the knowledge. No one knew how to build employee onboarding manuals better than I did. I had been writing and reviewing them for over a decade. It was then I found my confidence and everything changed.” Strength and confidence can often stem from the powerful motivator of wanting to leave corporate life. When women realize they are more than the paycheck they bring home, their purpose can 8
be sparked and ignited with their passion. Leading a life that is more in alignment with your core values is a natural stimulant. There is no greater high than helping someone by using your developed talent and skills in a proficient manner.
Pursuing Dreams When women leave corporate the world opens up to a wide range of new possibilities. Some start new ventures that embody dreams that have previously been put on hold. We heard reasons such as: “I didn’t think I could make the same amount of money”; “My partner/ spouse wasn’t supportive.”; “I had little kids and they came first.”; and the most popular, “I was afraid I couldn’t make a go of it and didn’t want to risk being a failure.” Although it does take courage to pursue your dreams, they are not impossible. By using your solid foundation of knowledge and experiences, you are able to create something meaningful and fulfilling. The mindset should be converted from one of leaving an established corporate entity to one of working in a nimble and fastpaced start-up. The transition is not a rejection or step down, but rather a promotion that only you can give yourself. It is a true testament to resilience and adaptability to start a new business at any stage of life.
fast-paced life of a new business, predictability is rare. Everything has a cause-and-effect relationship. The good news about this is that each change you make will result in an outcome and you will be able to see that outcome pretty quickly. The bad news is that not all outcomes are cash-positive. Does this mean that you made the wrong choice? Possibly, but the learning that is achieved from this is priceless. Amanda, a former attorney turned pastry chef shared her experience. “I finally worked up enough courage to tell my friends and family about my career change. The judgments were far less severe in reality than I had dreamed up in my head. Then, three months after I opened my pastry doors, the pandemic hit. It was the one thing I hadn’t prepared for in my master plan. I had to very quickly reconfigure my opening plans and delivery mechanisms. The only thing that has been predictable for
Unpredictable Challenges are Expected I am sure you have heard the saying, “Expect the Unexpected”. Well, this is completely true when starting your own business. Even the most brilliant planners and strategists will find themselves in unchartered territories. In the Sophisticated Sales
me in business is that there will always be unpredictability.”
Adopt a Growth Perspective Overcoming challenges requires a growth perspective that embraces learning, versatility, and quick course correction. Women who leave corporate roles often discover a natural capacity to navigate change. They become more accomplished in problemsolving, risk-taking, and developing their own modes of operation. Sara, a former healthcare executive, says, “This has been the hardest thing I have ever done, but I don’t regret any of it. Without the problems, I would have not uncovered the solutions. And, it has been the solutions that have propelled my business further than I would have ever thought possible. Sophisticated Sales
I have not only learned more about business but a ton more about myself.” Adopting a growth perspective allows women to view challenges as opportunities for growth and development. They recognize that setbacks are part of the path forward.
New Success Mindsets New success mindset shifts confront outdated thinking and skewed logic defined by titles, salary numbers, and corporate perks. This new mindset is measured by alignment with core values, fulfillment, and the positive impact vocations have on others. It also highlights the importance of pursuing one’s own individual path and celebrating the unique journey of being you.
In a world that often emphasizes the corporate destination, the stories of these women remind us that the journey itself can be life-changing and rewarding. Leaving the corporate world to find oneself is not about abandoning the past, but continuing to evolve into a more true, authentic version of yourself. So, if you ever find yourself at a crossroads, questioning the path you are on, remember that starting something new doesn’t mean starting over. It means embracing the beautiful, transformative journey of selfdiscovery.

STOP
Impoer Syndrome and Embrace Authenticity
D
id you know that Imposter Syndrome was a term originally coined in the 1970’s? It refers to an inescapable feeling of self-doubt, insecurity, and the constant fear of being unmasked as a fraud, even when one has extensive accomplishments and competence. This experience affects all types of individuals. It is non-discriminatory and can range from students to seasoned professionals, and even entrepreneurs. The lingering thought of being incapable can be paralyzing and can prevent us from reaching our full potential and even may lead to feelings of anxiety and panic. Today, we will explore the complexities of Imposter Syndrome and most importantly, share how to overcome it.
What Is It & Where Did It Come From? Imposter Syndrome lurks in the shadows of success. It often is found in high-achieving individuals who have deep-rooted feelings
Sophisticated Sales
of inadequacy. The irony is that most of these individuals have external validation, credentials, and experience to indicate the exact opposite. Common belief among these individuals is that their success really doesn’t have anything to do with them personally, but rather being in the right place at the right time. They do not recognize their own skills and value. John, an experienced CFO states, “No matter how long I do this job or how many numbers I crunch, I still feel like I don’t know what I am doing and someone will find that out.” John’s comment is not atypical. People who suffer from this affliction continue to have this fear-based thought pattern despite the evidence of competence and achievement.
So, where does it come from? Imposter syndrome can be traced back to 4 primary factors:
1. Perfectionism. The goal to be “perfect” often sets one up for unrealistic standards that can never be met which leads to a continual fear of not measuring up to goals and being exposed as a failure. 2. Social Comparison. Comparing oneself to others, especially those you see as more successful, can fuel feelings of inadequacy. This also leads to minimizing one’s achievements and downplaying them in comparison to others. 3. Societal Expectations. Generalizations and stereotypes can worsen Imposter Syndrome, especially for women and minority groups. 4. Early Childhood Experiences. Unrealistic expectations set by parental figures and regular criticism can lead to feelings of self-doubt. Over time, selfdoubt can lead to the fear of making mistakes and failing.
11
your authenticity. Here are some strategies to help stop Imposter Syndrome and elevate your true self: 1. Take the Credit. Celebrate your accomplishments and successes. Create a list of big and small wins and reflect on the hard work and skills that contributed to them. Recognizing your achievements, will help balance the tendency to give the credit to external individuals and factors such as luck. Understanding where Imposter Syndrome may originate will help significantly in overcoming it altogether. When the underlying causes are uncovered, individuals can begin to reframe their negative self-perceptions and destructive thoughts.
Imposter Syndrome can manifest in various ways, but two common outcomes are: 1. The Avoidance of Challenges. Individuals who suffer from these pervasive thoughts often stay away from opportunities that might highlight their perceived shortcomings. By staying out of the limelight and operating under the radar, these individuals feel more safe and less of a target.
If you recognize either of these signs in yourself or others, it may be time to take a step toward addressing Imposter Syndrome. It is important to remember that these feelings and actions are not uncommon and can be managed.
What Can Help? Start with being genuine and true to yourself, no matter what. By aligning your thoughts, feelings, and actions with your self-perceptions you will improve
2. Reframe Regularly. Negative thoughts and self-doubt must be confronted daily and replaced with positive statements and affirmations. For example, change “This opportunity just fell into my lap” to “I am attracting all positive opportunities and am deserving of them”. Over time, you will begin to notice the negative automatic thoughts decrease and confidence and self-assurance increase.
2. Working Overtime. It is most common to find these individuals at the office much longer than necessary. They are attempting to compensate for their perceived deficiencies by extending excessive effort over long hours even when actual productivity is low. 12
Sophisticated Sales
3. There Are No Failures. Sometimes we meet our goals and sometimes we may need to make some adjustments. Either way, this is a natural part of growth. Rather than fearing and condemning yourself for working through each experience, view shortcomings as opportunities to improve. Each experience is a stepping stone to success. 4. Set Micro Goals. Avoid setting too steep of goals. Instead, consider setting smaller, or micro-goals that lead to larger goals. This will give you more opportunities to celebrate and not get discouraged. By forming the habit of celebrating you will become less self-critical and develop a stronger positive outlook for yourself and the world around you. 5. Find a Safe Supportive Environment. Don’t be afraid to talk with trusted friends, coaches, mentors, and counselors about your feelings about Imposter Syndrome. Sharing your thoughts and experiences with others can provide an unbiased perspective and emotional support. You will find that you are not alone and many others share the same or similar challenges.
7. Don’t Be Afraid To Seek Professional Help. If Imposter Syndrome begins to significantly impact your day-to-day activities, career, or well-being, consider speaking with a professional therapist or counselor who specializes in self-esteem, confidence, and vulnerability issues. 8. Write it Down. Keeping a journal is an excellent outlet to track patterns in your thoughts and feelings. Journaling can provide clarity and many insights into your thoughts and help you uncover areas where adjustments need to be made.
Journey Not Destination As with many challenges, overcoming Imposter Syndrome is not a one-and-done situation, but a journey that extends over time. It requires regular and ongoing self-reflection, self-compassion, and self-awareness. It’s about recognizing your value is not determined by external validation
but by your ability to be authentic and true to yourself and your values. When you release the need for external praise you are free from fearful thoughts. It’s time to step confidently into your next chapter as your own unique and empowered self! Imposter Syndrome may feel debilitating but is not insurmountable. Understanding its origins, recognizing how it presents itself, and actively working towards reframing unhealthy thoughts can lead to major transformation and increased happiness. You have the ability to stop the downward spiral and replace those fearful feelings with those of self-assuredness and begin thriving personally and professionally. Take charge of your true self and watch as your inner imposter fades away, leaving behind the most confident, capable, and amazing version of you.
6. Expand Self-Compassion and Self-Care. Develop a practice of treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a friend in a similar situation. Remember that no one is perfect and by taking care of yourself you will be better able to take care of others. Sophisticated Sales

Mastering Soft Skills: The Key to Closing More Deals
Model. PCM teaches people how to adapt what we say, and do, and shows to make the most of every conversation and situation. Along the way, we learn how to leverage our differences to make a difference at work, at home, and in the world.
Empathy and Emotional Intelligence
The basic rule of business is that sales are the lifeblood of success. Whether you’re just starting out in your career, or if you are a seasoned professional looking to take your career to the next level, mastering the art of closing sales is critical to your success. While product knowledge and industry expertise get you to the door, it’s your soft skills that open the doors of opportunities for success. In this article, we’ll explore the essential soft skills necessary to close more sales and build lasting customer relationships.
Communication Effective communication is the foundation of business relationships and is extremely important in sales. It’s not just about talking; it’s about listening, understanding, and connecting with your potential customers. When you genuinely listen to your prospects, you can identify their pain points, needs, and desires. Addressing the client’s needs throughout your sales call you show empathy and build trust.
Sophisticated Sales
You’ve heard of the Golden Rule, but in sales, the Platinum Rule will help businesswomen be more successful. The Platinum Rule is where a person treats another person the way that person wants to be treated. For instance, if the prospect is a busy person who doesn’t have much time, get right to the point of the meeting, and provide written communication in bullet points or brief summaries to save time. Don’t waste time with small talk at the beginning of the meeting and stick to the time schedule. However, if the prospect needs more information and time to think about the decision, provide information ahead of time along with extra resources. Slow down when talking to her and make sure you don’t have to rush out of the meeting. This will let her know you care about helping her make the right decision. Identifying personalities and understanding the way a person communicates is crucial for success in not only business but also life. My favorite way to teach people communication skills is through the Process Communication
Empathy is a superpower in sales. It’s the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, putting yourself in your prospect’s shoes. PCM is the most powerful tool for learning how to be empathetic and how to show your prospects you understand their problems. When you show empathy, you create a deeper connection with your customers. They feel heard and understood, which can significantly influence their decision-making process. Emotional intelligence is closely related to empathy, as it allows you to manage your emotions effectively and respond empathetically to your clients, even in challenging situations.
Building Rapport Building rapport is about establishing a genuine connection with your prospects. It involves finding common ground, showing genuine interest in their lives, and creating a comfortable environment for conversation. Women entrepreneurs have a natural advantage in this area, as they often excel in forming authentic relationships. People are more likely to buy from someone they trust and feel comfortable with. Building rapport 15
also helps you stand out from the competition by making a lasting impression. Using the Platinum Rule helps to build rapport because you are putting the other person’s needs ahead of your own.
Confidence Confidence is a magnet that draws customers towards you. People want to do business with people who are confident in not only their ability but also their products or services. When you believe in your product or service and exude confidence, it instills trust in your potential clients. Confidence isn’t about being arrogant; it’s about knowing your worth and the value your offering brings. To boost your confidence, practice your sales pitch, rehearse objection-handling techniques, and remind yourself of your past successes. Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors and peers who can boost your confidence and provide guidance when needed.
16
Problem-Solving Sales often involve overcoming objections and addressing customer concerns. When faced with objections, don’t view them as roadblocks but as opportunities to demonstrate your expertise and provide solutions. Remember that objections often is a signal that your prospect needs more information. The key to effective problemsolving is to approach each issue systematically. Listen carefully to the objection, ask clarifying questions, and offer a solution that aligns with the prospect’s needs and priorities. Demonstrating your problem-solving skills can turn objections into opportunities to showcase the value of your product or service.
Networking Networking is a powerful tool for women entrepreneurs looking to close more sales. Building a strong professional network allows you to tap into valuable
resources, gain referrals, and access new opportunities. Attend industry events, join business associations, and connect with fellow entrepreneurs and potential clients. Effective networking isn’t just about collecting business cards but about building meaningful relationships. Take the time to get to know people, offer assistance when possible, and be a resource to others in your network. Building a strong network can open doors to new sales opportunities and collaborations. Mastering these essential soft skills is the key to closing more sales and achieving success as a female businesswoman. Remember that these skills can be developed and refined over time with practice and dedication. By continuously honing your soft skills, you can build lasting customer relationships, increase sales, and thrive in the competitive world of business.

Learn how to Navigate
Sales Conversations and Win Every Time
S
ales conversations can make or break a business. It doesn’t matter if you are selling a tangible product or intangible service, your ability and skill level in navigating these conversations are directly related to the amount of sales you will close. Outlined below are several fundamental strategies and tips to help you win every time.
Why Do Sales Conversations Matter? These conversations aren’t simply exchanges of information, but opportunities to connect, build relationships, solve problems, offer ideas, and lastly increase revenue. No one wants to feel like they are having a medical assessment done so don’t go through your discovery checklist item by item like a scripted robot. You have to demonstrate your humanity to really connect with others. It’s all about relationships! Effective Sophisticated Sales
sales conversations lay the foundation for strong and positive relationships with customers. And, we all know that happy customers can lead to repeat business, referrals, and long-term business collaborations. Sales conversations also lead to problem-solving and building trust. When you help your prospect solve their most pressing issue, you will be able to establish yourself as a valuable resource. The more information you know about how your prospect buys, what they believe are buying priorities, and when they buy the more you will be able to customize a solution for them. Elegant sales delivery begins with a well-executed conversation. There is a rhythm that must be set to generate a positive dialogue. Please do not have a one-sided sales conversation where you are verbally vomiting on your potential
new client. This is a surefire way to run them off for good. There is a give-and-take to all conversations, and sales conversations are no exception to that. Make sure your cadence matches the same energy level as your prospect to ensure congruence and maximum connection.
Structure of Proper Sales Conversations: 1. Plan. Successful sales conversations start way before you start writing an email, pick up the phone, or waltz into a meeting. Preparation is mandatory. You must know your product or service, know your customer’s needs and position, and set clear objectives. Always know what you want to get out of the conversation. And remember, the goal isn’t to close the deal on the first conversation.
19
2. Prioritize. One of the most critical pieces of a sales conversation is knowing how to prioritize. This involves reaching out to a prospect during your peak energy hours to ensure you are able to fully listen and absorb the information you are receiving. Active listening is a critical skill in regard to sales conversations. Hear the words, and understand the feelings behind them so you can fully understand the needs and issues. Pro Tip: Be sure to ask open-ended questions when possible. Encourage the prospect to share more by validating what you heard them say and don’t forget to show empathy for the prospect’s concerns. 3. Present. It is important to be present in the sales 20
conversation. Avoid any distractions, loud background noises, and any other disruptions. Make sure that you are speaking the prospect’s language. Adjust your communication style to match your prospect’s preferences. Are they fast talkers? Do they linger on words? Also, be ready to discuss and answer questions that may present themselves as objections. 4. Propose. The proof is in the proposal. A well-delivered and executed proposal can make all the difference. It is so much more than a price on a piece of paper. It is your opportunity to demonstrate your company’s depth of experience and your personal understanding of your prospect’s problem. It is the perfect opportunity to highlight your company’s track record,
customer testimonials, and case studies to solidify your credibility. 5. Produce. At the end of the day, it is about closing the deal. You may have to handle a few objections along the way, ask clarifying questions, pivot proposals, and even negotiate additional terms, but the goal is to exchange money for a product or service, period. Do not get lost in the weeds and stay focused. Always ask the smaller closing questions along the way to gauge if a prospect is willing and ready to buy from you. These could sound like, “Do you think this solution is a good fit for you?”; “Would you like to work with me?”; and even “When would you like to have this solution in place?”

Beyond the fundamental steps of proper sales conversations, here are some additional tips and best practices to help you consistently get the results you want from your sales efforts: •
•
•
Stay Current. Keep up-todate with industry trends, news, events, and product knowledge. Continual learning demonstrates your value to potential clients. Practice. Make sure to have your explanations and summary statements clear, concise, and engaging. You only have a few seconds to pique the prospect’s interest before they begin nodding their heads and tuning you out. Practice role playing to ensure you are delivering the message in the way that you would like it to be received.
Sophisticated Sales
Use Your CRM. Even with the best memory, you can’t remember every detail. Use your customer relationship management software to document important nuggets of information on your prospect, their company, or presenting issue. It will not only help you stay organized, but also prepare for presentations and proposals.
•
Turn Up The Emotional Intelligence. Higher emotional intelligece allows you to enhance your capacity to connect with others, more quickly. The key is to recognize your emotions and manage them while empathizing with the emotions of others.
•
Learn From The “NO”. It really means, not now. Your job is to not stop asking questions when you hear “no”, but
uncover why is it “not now”? There is usually one presenting objection before you get to the real one. Stay curious and you will be able to uncover what is really holding back your prospect from buying. Mastering the art of effective sales conversations demands preparation, empathy, and flexibility. It requires building trust, addressing objections, and closing deals all while keeping your emotional intelligence at an alltime high. Remember, successful sales conversations are all about relationships and helping your prospects solve their problems. By applying these principles outlined above, you can significantly elevate your sales approach. So, step confidently into your next sales conversation and watch as you walk down the path to success and win every time. 21
The Power of Plastic:
Elevating Your Business and Lifestyle
W
hat if you had a business partner who could offer you additional financial support around the clock? Well, guess what? You do! It’s your credit card. These small pieces of multi-colored plastic offer not only accessibility but a multitude of benefits when managed wisely. Credit cards can be powerful tools that can impact your financial well-being. Not only do they offer convenience, and security, but also a wide range of additional benefits. When you leverage credit cards, you are able to better manage finances, build credit, and achieve financial independence. However, with great power, comes great responsibility! So, it is important to have a debt management strategy with using credit cards Let’s get started! This article will outline five top factors to consider when choosing your credit cards. 1. Selecting the Right Card. The first step in selecting the best business partner is to choose one who fits your needs best. Research options that have attractive rewards programs. Evaluate annual fees, interest rates, and bonus offers to ensure that your spending habits sign with the
Sophisticated Sales
specific rewards categories. For example, are you a frequent traveler or do you simply prefer cash-back incentives? Once you have an understanding of your spending habits, you will be able to ascertain which credit card will be a better redemption fit. 2. Understanding Points and Miles. Lions, Tigers, and Bears, “Oh My!” There are so many travel loyalty programs and it is often confusing when you first start traveling. So, where do you start? Think about your past few travel experiences. What hotels and airlines were most comfortable, affordable, and simply treated you well? It is important to align yourself with a primary airline and hotel chain so you can maximize both your miles and loyalty programs simultaneously. Pro Tip: Have a primary and secondary airline and hotel chain in your back pocket and stick with them to see points, bonuses, upgrades, and much more!
3. Initial Spending Requirements. Don’t miss the sign-on bonus! Often credit cards give extra incentives for charging a certain amount when you first get the card. Most times you will need to spend a dollar amount within the first 90 days. Make sure to understand when the start and cut-off periods are for these extra bonuses so you can maximize the benefits. Additionally, you can accelerate rewards by meeting these initial spends. Remember the offers are all different, you have to pay close attention and plan properly to make sure you receive the full benefit. 4. Redeem Points Strategically. Once you understand the options and have a good idea of what you spend money on more frequently, you can strategically redeem points for things you would typically purchase out-of-pocket. Calculate the value of your points and miles to make sure
23
you are getting the biggest bang for your buck. While it is often nice to get a new designer purse for points, make sure that when you convert those points into dollars it still makes sense. Pro Tip: Never redeem points for more than 20% of the out-of-pocket purchase price. In order to take advantage of the benefits that work best for you and your lifestyle, it is necessary to continue to evaluate benefits often and make ongoing adjustments. 5. Stay Fiscally Responsible. Just because you have it, doesn’t mean you need to use it all the time. The best way to use your credit card responsibly is to stay organized and know what you have spent and how much of your credit limit remains. By managing how often and how much you swipe your plastic, you will be able to pay credit card bills on time and in full. Set a budget and avoid any unnecessary debt and high-interest charges. Also, monitor your credit scores regularly and address any discrepancies that you do not recognize on your statements. Fraud is unfortunately becoming more common in the digital age, so it is imperative to check your statements to make sure you are only paying for your own purchases.
24
There are other important considerations when applying for credit cards. For starters, what limit of credit should you expect to get right out of the gate? The real answer is - it depends. Generally, your credit and employment histories and finances are weighted heavily when determining your limit. Your credit score also plays a big role. A higher credit score will allow you a higher credit limit (usually 720 and above). It is important to note that no credit history sometimes lowers the amount of credit you are eligible for when applying for a card. Don’t worry too much if this is your situation, as most credit card companies offer entry-level or starter cards with lower limits for just this purpose. And, when you begin charging and paying off your debt in a timely fashion, you will be able to request a credit increase, or one may be applied to your account automatically.
Savvy businesspeople are harnessing plastic daily to enhance their pocketbooks and achieve their goals faster. Credit cards are not simply financial currency, but instruments of empowerment and can be very powerful allies along your financial journey. They open doors that might have otherwise been closed without the ‘pay in full” key. They can help support your ever-changing needs and allow you to navigate through life’s challenges and emergencies with confidence, ease, and grace. Responsible management, such as paying bills on time, avoiding high-interest debt, and regularly reviewing your statements and charges, is of paramount importance and can help you avoid the downsides. Additionally, the plastic life offers a ton of soft benefits such as expense tracking, budgeting assistance, points redemption It’s time to crawl into the driver’s seat and take charge of your financial life.
Disclaimer:
While credit card perks and rewards offer remarkable advantages, it’s crucial to exercise responsible financial management. Overspending or carrying high balances can lead to debt and financial strain. Before applying for credit cards or utilizing their perks, assess your financial situation, set budgets, and stay mindful of your spending habits. Use credit cards to enhance your financial journey, not as a means to indulge in unnecessary expenses.

affordability, enjoying the journey, and making intentional choices. In this interview with Laura, we explore the current challenges that couples face while planning their weddings and how Marryment is empowering them to overcome these hurdles and making the process more affordable AND enjoyable along the way.
Q1: Laura, could you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to enter the world of wedding planning? I’ve always had a passion for event planning and things started to take shape when I started planning my own wedding in 2017. I saw a lot of nasty truths about the industry that were really frustrating. Coming
from a background in corporate project and change management, I knew that there was a better way. I wanted to take an approach that valued relationships over the rampant consumerism and predatory pricing that I was experiencing firsthand. But even with all the challenges in the wedding industry, I was hooked right away! I took a wedding catering and bartending job on the weekends for fun, officiated a number of weddings, and started planning for family & friends. It was just a hobby to start so that I could stay connected to this world where I found so much joy.
Q2:What do you love about the wedding industry? Weddings are truly magical celebrations that embrace life’s 27
most delightful facets: love, laughter, delicious food, dancing, cherished family, and treasured friends. These are the elements I wholeheartedly choose to surround myself with.
Q3: What do you find most challenging about the wedding industry? Affordability. Stress. Unrealistic expectations. Really, just a departure from celebrating the commitment that two people are making to each other. While I truly value celebrating traditions, weddings have changed. So many of my couples express frustrations around “needing” to do things at their wedding that aren’t aligned with their priorities and authentic selves. My job is to bring them back to creating a personalized, meaningful event where they can create wonderful memories with those they love the most in this world.
Q4: How does your background influence your approach?
task - for ANYONE, let alone couples going through it for the first time. My experience with very high-profile, high-stakes, strategic corporate projects taught me the structure and organization needed to pull it all together. But a wedding is SO MUCH MORE than just putting on an event. It is inherently about PEOPLE and navigating one of the biggest changes they will experience in their lifetime. Being able to juggle all of the planning while making it a more seamless and enjoyable experience is where the change management comes in. There are change management tools and techniques, based in science, that I use in my planning approach. It’s rooted in open and transparent communication, setting expectations, and having all the tools necessary to get the job done. The way I like to think about it, most simply, is keeping PEOPLE at the heart of all your decisionmaking. That extends to how I interact with my couples, how we think about their guests and vendors, and ultimately creating an event that is most meaningful to the couple. If you can remove
the extra noise and focus on what really matters, everything goes more smoothly.
Q5: When you say “planning approach”, what services does Marryment offer? There are 2 main services: planning and month-of coordination. I define “planning” as any work done more than a month out from the wedding date. This is everything from vendor referrals, contract negotiations, and getting all the pieces in place. “Coordination” is the month leading up to the wedding and then being onsite on the big day. This includes timeline development, final vendor contacts, and managing anything and everything at the wedding. Marryment really shines brightly in both of these areas, in part due to the amazing team that I’ve assembled. Each associate is equally and especially qualified. More and more of my time and effort goes into strengthening this amazing group so we can continue to help more and more couples.
Planning a wedding has always been a complex affair. Managing budgets, choosing a trusted team of vendors, and ensuring every detail aligns with the couple’s vision can feel like an overwhelming

Marryment’s approach offers a guiding light—a reminder to prioritize the journey over the destination and to use this time to not only create a dream wedding but also a stronger foundation for the marriage itself. By embracing growth, fostering connection, and navigating the challenges hand in hand, couples can rise above the complexities and emerge from their engagement journey with love, joy, and shared memories that will last a lifetime.
Q6: You’ve mentioned affordability. How are you seeing that play out in the wedding industry? This is such a hot topic. There are a number of things that couples are doing to address Sophisticated Sales
wedding affordability. This is the era of rising costs and financial uncertainty - and it’s tough for couples out there. They are tasked with making trade-offs between wedding expenses and other life goals, such as purchasing a home or paying off debt. As couples grapple with the balance between financial responsibility and extravagant wedding costs, many people are looking for everywhich way they can to save some money and still have a wonderful wedding. This might look like DIY options, thrifting/borrowing items, bartering. Another big area is guest count. I caution people to use this lever as a first method of cost savings because your wedding day is so heavily influenced by the curated group of people around you. Yes, reduce your guest count to people you truly want to
surround you on your day but do not feel pressured to make cuts if having those people present is important to you.
Q7: Why should couples hire a wedding coordinator? Someone is going to be responsible for managing the details of your day. Do you want that to be you? A family member? A friend? Or a paid professional that has been-theredone-that dozens (or hundreds!) of times over? Having a coordinator protects your investment your investment dollars, your investment of time and effort that you have spent planning. A coordinator can help bring that vision to life.

For couples, this is where the Marryment planning portal comes into play. These are online resources - centralize videos, tools, and templates - that couples can access anytime, anywhere. It distrills literal decades of industry knowledge into bit-size, helpful steps. The Intention is to break down this huge goal into individual steps when they are ready - not too much information upfront to overwhelm, and not putting things off until the last minute. It’s about creating a comfortable and sustainable pace throughout. Laura’s story has another unique element - she was the runner up on The Blox - Season 7. As the largest TV competition on the planet for startups, this was no small feat for her fledgling business. At the time of her application, she was still pre-revenue and working at her corporate job. That didn’t stop her from making quite the splash though. Wes Bergmann, Lead Investor of BetaBlox, and one of the most famous reality TV stars shared, “Over the last two years alone around 100,000 entrepreneurs have entered our casting/interview funnel. Not only did Laura make it through that gauntlet, she then
Q8: How do you do provide these services on a budget? Another core tenant of Marryment is providing associates a liveable wage - making sure they are fully and fairly compensated for their time. This is hard for small businesses, which are really the backbone of the wedding industry. To increase the affordability, I really focus on two areas: standard procedures and scalability. 32
What that means practically is that I’ve created easy tools that every Marryment planner can pick up and use. We don’t need to recreate the wheel every time. Every wedding is unique, so there are questions we can ask to understand your vision quickly and completely. Everything from FAQs to templates and other 1:1 coaching is provided to make sure each Marryment planner is ready to provide truly white-glove, above and beyond service.

When we try and create an archetypal person of who we cast to ensure the show and experience is as great as it could possibly be, we are building that archetype not just around people like her - but using her as a physical example of a quintessential Bloxer.” And the judges agreed. and her business that he took on a formal mentorship role. According to Laura, one of the most meaningful parts of the experience, in addition to the knowledge she gained, was the relationships she formed. Vana Lyons, owner of Main Street Mercantile & Rusty’s Dry Goods in Waterford, WI, shared her experience meeting Laura. “Laura and I fell into a quick friendship on day one of Season 7 of The Blox. Literally, fell! After giving our nervewrecking on-camera introduction interviews, we walked together back to our rooms. Thankfully, no cameras were on us as I tripped over myself in the parking lot, fell to the ground, and did a very ungraceful roll. As I laid splayed out on my back staring up at a Laura, she quickly offered her hand to Sophisticated Sales
help pull me up saying, “Welp! We have to be friends now!” From that point we were inseparable – not only throughout the entire filming journey but to this day. Laura’s kindness and warmth makes everyone around her comfortable to be themselves. She brings out the best in people and highlights their strengths. Her determination to see others succeed and find happiness is truly awe-inspiring. Her care and loyalty make her not only a truly great friend, but the absolute best Wedding Planner imaginable.
Venues can license her online planning service and offer it to their couples FOR FREE. They then have the opportunity to book additional planning and coordination services. Lavender: US Farm that Grows to Perfection

avender is not all created equal. How many times have you smelled a lavender fragrance, candle, or oil and found that sometimes you really loved the rich earthy smell, and other times it was like an old powdery granny’s closet? Well, I know exactly how you feel! Part of the diversity in fragrance is because there are over 450 different varieties of lavender! The primary types are English, Portuguese, French, Spanish, and lavandin. And, ultimately much of the fragrance has to do with the volume of lavender oil used and if it is mixed with other ingredients. These purple flowers are not new and have historically represented serenity, grace, and calmness. Purple is also known as the symbolic color of royalty and represents luxury and elegance. There have been many practical uses for lavender over the years, but in more recent times, studies have proven that lavender is a natural relaxant and is one of the most versatile herbs that offers many physical as well as mental health benefits. Some of the most significant benefits are:

Improved Sleep: Lavender can help alleviate insomnia and improve overall sleep quality. By adding a few drops of lavender oil in a diffuser or on your pillowcase many people report being able to fall asleep faster and enjoy a fuller night’s sleep. The National Sleep Foundation survey shares that 71% of people reported improved sleep quality when their bedrooms were scented with lavender.
Mood Enhancement & Anxiety Reduction: Most commonly known for its relaxing and soothing properties, lavender products have been proven to reduce stress and improvement of overall emotional wellbeing. bug bites, minor burns, and skin irritations. Lavender oil has even been shown to improve acne, eczema, and promote healthy skin. Now that we have identified that incorporating lavender into our daily routines will provide physical and mental improvement one may ask, with all of the products on the market, how can consumers possibly know which ones are superior? Bill and Wendy Southerland have cracked the case with their magical lavender farm in Eagle, Idaho. It is called Red Chair Lavender and they offer the most dreamy, high quality lavender products. Here is how it all got started! The lavender farm was not always a farm. In fact, The farm originated as a 6-acre parcel of land that served as a hay field. Bill 40
and Wendy built a garage on the property to live in and that was where the dream began. Although working in other capacities at the time, they devoted all of their extra time towards building their home together. During the construction of their house, Wendy began planting trees, bushes, bulbs, and much more! Three years later, in 2008, the house was complete and the gardens began blooming. One weekend they were visiting family in Pendleton, Oregon, and attended a local lavender festival. They were so inspired by this sensory experience that shortly after, they made the decision to repurpose their own hay fields into lavender fields. In 2011, their lavender fields began to grow and continued to expand. And, in 2014, they acquired their first lavender oil still and lovingly named her
“Lavanda”. They immediately began distilling the lavender oil and even had to purchase a second still in 2019 to keep with the increasing harvest of lavender. No matter what type of lavender product you are looking for, Red Chair Lavender has you covered. Their diverse range includes everything from lavender scrubs, body butters, creams, sprays, and even spices and even hunting and pet products. When asked how they measured the volume of oil that goes into each product, Bill shared that each product batch has to pass their “smell” test. They ensure that every product that leaves has a substantial lavender smell. And it is true! And, it is the real smell. Lavender Hand and Foot Cream: Slightly lighter than a full on body butter, this creamy and silky lotion is sure to serve as a salve for tired, chapped, or cracked hands and feet. It is dense enough to penetrate extremely dry skin, but leave no greasy residue. Sugar Scrub: The small granules of sugar feel like a soothing massage against your skin. This product packs the most bang for the buck as even after you exfoliate and rinse off, you still experience the soothing moisturizer of the scrub. Secret tip: Add the hand and foot cream after the sugar scrub for a longer lasting moisturized lavender experience!
Pleasant Dreams Mist: For an enriched nighttime slumber, we loved the pleasant dreams mist. All you need is a couple of sprays on your linens or even in the air to immediately feel more relaxed. Essential Oil & Diffuser: For the more serious lavender lover, we recommend these products together. This bluetooth enabled diffuser allows you to control how long and how much of your lavender oil is being diffused while adding natural moisture to the air of any room.
