The Revival: September 2022

The ESS Comms team is excited to present to you the first edition of The Bridge for the 2022/2023 school year! For those who are unfamiliar with The Bridge, it is a publication designed to showcase our vibrant and diverse engineering community by providing students with a place to express their creativity. Here at the University of Alberta, engineering students have many unique skills and talents, and The Bridge is one of the many ways they can explore their passions.

In this edition, you get to meet our Executive Team and hard working Directors of Publications for this year as well as learn about all the events that will be happening now that we are back in person. We recognize that for many students, this will be your in-person semester, and as a result, so we’ve also included some helpful resources to help your find your way around campus.

The revival of our in person community is something that the team and I have been looking forward to, and we can’t wait to meet and showcase your incredible talents in this and future editions of The Bridge. Lean back, grab your drink of choice, and enjoy reading through the rest of this edition!

Messagefromthedirectors

Welcome back to school! Get ready to kick some sass with this year's first edition of the Bridge : The Revival! Starting off with a little introduction, we ’ re Anwesha (4th year, MEC E) and Samrin (3rd year, EE), the sassy duo you need to keep up with throughout the year. We are your ESS Co-directors of Publications. You’ll love us, no doubt!

If you ever find us getting coffee on campus, feel free to drop by, say hi and stop us from shamelessly overspending.

Anwesha Samrin
Hello fellow engineers!!

In this edition, we will introduce two new characters - Torque and Inertia. They will occasionally show up and ask questions, share cool things, spill the tea ☕ (or maybe annoy you a little) as you go through the pages of this little masterpiece .

We hope that the bridge always helps you recharge all the energy juice that engineering drains out of you. We look forward to making your degree a lil less miserable (and we hope to see you join our team and show off how snazzy you are!)

Love and sunshine, Anwesha & Samrin

DurgaPuja

Celebrated in the month of Ashvin (September October), Durga puja is one of the most awaited Hindu festivals in India, especially in West Bengal. It celebrates the victory of good over evil as Goddess Durga slays demon king Mahisasura. It is said that the Goddess visits her earthly abode during this time to bless everyone.

Festive lights decorate the streets, loudspeakers play festive songs, local communities stage pandals, people dance with dhunuchi lamps and priests recite hymns and chants to celebrate the warrior Goddess!

Celebrated yearly on the 5th of October, World Teachers' Day acknowledges and appreciates all the teachers around the globe It was declared in 1994 with the realization of recognizing the rights and responsibilities of teachers and educators

Let's all take a moment to show how grateful we are to the individuals who selflessly work hard to mould the future of this world.

Let your professor know how amazing they are!!!

Fall 2022- The New Normal ?

Owais Ahmed

On September 1st, 2022, many of us woke up with a feeling of dread. Gone were the days of zoom classes and it was once again time to navigate the maze that is the University of Alberta’s north campus. It was also the first time many people, myself included, were seeing classes and hallways filled with students in a long time. The beginning of fall 2022, we return to what life was like pre Covid so in a sense it is back to the normal, but the pandemic has made this new normal feel weird.

The Covid 19 Pandemic was not easy on any of us. We all saw our near and dear ones get sick, many lost their livelihoods and we all were locked down in our houses for the first time in our lives. All classes were moved online and all our interactions became virtual rather than physical.

This academic year we return to being completely physical, however the consequences of the pandemic continue to affect us.

Most of us are struggling to make new friends as everyone’s social skills have been affected during the pandemic. We see daily posts on social media for people asking tips on how to make friends and how they often feel lonely and depressed due to lack of social interaction. As a community we have to step up to interact with those around us. A simple “Have a good day.” Can have a profound impact on somebody who is feeling down. Students who are struggling to socialize should attend faculty events and join clubs that interest them as it is easy there to meet like minded people.

September 1st was the first time many students sat in an in person class since March 2020. What in person classes offer though is the ability to collaborate with our peers and form deeper bonds with those around us. In person classes also motivate us to study with dedication. Last but not the least, finally being back in person also gives us the opportunity to attend events that are simply not possible while being online like the September 23rd break the record dodgeball event or the engineering carnival. In person offers unique chances to experience the best the University and the faculty have to offer.

It is important to remember that no matter what any person is never alone in this. As a community we all are in it together for the long haul. Whenever anyone feels depressed or burnt out due to the workload or any other reason, the best solution is to simply talk and hangout with those close to you. Group study sessions are also a great way to study while having fun with your friends and avoiding burnout.

Fall 2022 is the new normal and is a season of great change. We face new challenges but also realize the potential that we had all along. It offers us the opportunity to be the best versions of ourselves, along with striving to excel in academics along with other extracurricular activities. It offers all of us the opportunities to grow as a person and as a community of engineers.

1. When you enter SAB from the door closest to the bus loop, walk down the long hallway. It's a pretty long hallway. But on the plus side, you just have to head straight. No turns or anything.

2. When the hallway opens up a little and you do reach a very small set of steps with a ramp, you'll find yourself in CAB. Well that was easy. Turn right at the Panda Express and pass by the Tim Hortons.

COVID-19, while commonly considered to have a milder course in terms of disease magnitude among youth, has a plethora of psychological, mental, physical, social, and cultural consequences. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, physical access to friends, peers, schoolmates, and relatives has been almost non existent for the last year and a half, with many of these school curricular activities taking place online on a digital platform. Limited or no opportunity for outdoor games and socialization may have a much greater impact on mental health than perceived, resulting in increased boredom, anger, frustration and, as a result, vulnerability to mental stress

Because of increased digital connections, 'emotional contagion,' in which one person's distress and fear spread to another, may be common among the population youth. Besides, the experience of quarantine restrictions during this COVID-19 pandemic also is another factor leading to mental stress. All these together have multifaceted impacts on children which may be psychological, mental, physical, social, and cultural. The effects of coronavirus are not just physical but they are also psychological in all age groups but more so among children. A recent study points toward the critical need to respond to the global mental health effects on children and adolescents at the global level due to the COVID 19 pandemic This is a global call to action, hence, there is a need for equitable mental health care for all children across the world

Relatively high levels of anxiety, stress, and depression having followed the COVID-19 stay-at-home order could lead to further psychological trauma, in addition to the mental health implications of the frothing pandemic itself. Teenagers, women, and caretakers are more stressed as a result of the pandemic. Their mental health issues cannot be ignored during and after the pandemic, and their health and well being are currently a concern. In accordance with a recent report, frontline workers and children were among those most sensitive to mental health issues during the pandemic The prevalence of mental disorders during the pandemic in the United States, particularly among adolescents, included depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, which was supported by other studies around the world that showed similar increases in depression and anxiety

During this time, it is essential to fixate on scaling up mental health services and targeted cognitive processes to close the inequality gap, which may demand investment and training to be viable. It is critical to prioritize assessing the effects of policies enacted to counter the invisible pandemic on the mental health of children and adolescents

HAKU'S

Haku was an orphan from the Land of Water (

Mizu no Kuni) and a descendant of the Yuki clan. Later, he became a mercenary ninja through a partnership with Zabuza Momochi, who trained him as a shinobi. Haku's mother was a wielder of a kekkei genkai: Ice Release. She hid this fact from her husband to avoid trouble. One day, Haku discovered the ability to manipulate water that he proudly showed to his mother, who was horrified by what she saw. Unbeknownst to them, Haku's father had seen everything from the shadows and decided to kill his wife and child. He, along with a small mob from the village, killed his wife and then attempted to kill Haku. But before he could, Haku used Ice Release to create several large ice spikes to kill his father and the rest of the mob.
