From the desk of the Director of Publications Dear reader,

I begin this short letter by thanking you for being just that: a reader. The Bridge is a student-run magazine and has been around since 2015. As students cycle through the prestigious engineering program at the University of Alberta, one can only imagine the snippets of history that can be lost all together.

The Bridge is an initiative to alleviate this and keep legacies of students alive for generations to come.

There would be no success to this mission without an audience, so thank you for being a part of that.

So, what does The Bridge contain, you may ask? Find content produced by our student team, including but not limited to: study tips, themed articles, coverage of student events, interviews with faculty, ESS announcements, and features of student groups. I would like to give a special shout-out to all the Jr. Editors who are a part of this team, some of them are even in first year! How many of you can say you were involved in first year? Probably not many. Big kudos to the entire Pubs team! đ&#x;˜Š The universal stereotype is that engineers aren’t good at anything but, well, engineering (and sometimes not even that‌). To throw writing into the equation would just be non-permissible. Unfortunately, the technical reports and academic works we are forced to produce will likely allow engineering students to stay in the realm of this stereotype rather comfortably. This can and should change! Writing can be therapeutic, fun and rewarding. I encourage you to consider joining us and submitting any works of writing you have, on a regular or irregular basis.

In this issue of The Bridge, you will find a few Halloween-themed articles, albeit overdue (partially my fault, partially midterms), some inspiration quotes, ESS announcements/events and the usually fun crosswords/lame memes at the end. We hope you are able to use this as a well-deserved break from studying, or general beginning-of-winter blues. Stay warm and see you next time!

President’s Message Dear fellow students, It seems that the transition between one year to the next gets shorter and shorter, and that we find ourselves back on campus yet again. I hope that this semester has been an exciting one, catching up with old friends and meeting new ones, getting back into the rhythm of class, assignments, and exams, and trying to adapt to the three season’s worth of weather.

The ESS certainly has been no slouch these last few months. With fall comes a list of events that you all know well, Engineering Carnival. First Year Retreat, and the Hoodie sale. We’ve been busy over the summer preparing events and services for another year of improving the lives of engineering students in whatever way we can. There’s a lot in store this year, and I’m excited to see what you think of the stuff we have planned.

Something that certainly wasn’t planned was the transition into a new President of the ESS during September. The Board of Directors, your discipline club presidents along with ESS executives, voted me in on September 18th. This hasn’t had an effect on any of the day to day items of the ESS, and in due time, it’ll be a blip on the radar of the history of the ESS. Fall has always been a period of transition, the transition between highschool and university for our First Years, the jump from First Year into each respective discipline, and the transition out of university and into the workforce. Sometimes change can be quite jarring, but with all the chaos that can surround fall term, know that there will always be mentorship and tutoring program available, that there will always be social events and professional development, and that there will always a group of people dedicated to doing whatever is possible in order to create the best undergrad experience that we can.

Let’s enjoy the weather while we can, close out midterm season with a bang, and turn the 20182019 academic year into a year filled with personal growth, good memories, and hopefully less stress from school. If you have any questions regarding the ESS’s plans for the next year, or the transition of presidency, please feel free to ask me at ess.president@ualberta.ca. Homecoming of the alumni: A union of the past with the present

by Gurbani Baweja Hlovate says: ‘As truth be told, homecoming never gets old’ and so the Faculty of Engineering honoured its alumni by hosting a homecoming event.

The Alumni Weekend was a two-day long event from September 21 to September 22 which was an exuberant celebration of the faculty's alumni and their significant contributions towards society.

To commemorate the homecoming of the alumni, an Engineering Carnival was held on September 22 at the East Solarium in ETLC.

It was a marvellous and a pleasant scenario to see lovely families savouring their weekend so joyfully at the U of A. The alumni also interacted with the student volunteers giving them insights about their engineering journey. The students, in turn, shared their university experiences. The Alumni Weekend was a huge success, it welcomed more than 1,800 people to the faculty and raised more than $5,000 towards the ENG fund which is an endowment to support the present and the future students. The carnival was a vibrant event and a rich blend of the union of the alumni and their families along with the faculty and the student volunteers. As Franklin D. Roosevelt says – ‘When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on’ and thus in this regard the faculty hopes to organise more events like this in the upcoming years in order to be connected with its alumni forever.

The carnival began in full swing at 9.30 a.m. with everything well organised prior to the beginning of the event. Numerous painstaking volunteers ranging from first year to fourth year along with the diligent staff members were a vital part of the event. Along with a number of games, popcorn, candies, Tim Horton's coffee and hot chocolate, things like face painting and a photo booth were also arranged for the kids who accompanied our alumni. Children with colourful badges which read ‘U of A Faculty of Engineering’, ‘My dad's an engineer’, ‘Future Engineer’, and ‘I love engineers’ could be seen relishing the event along with their engineer dads, mums, and grandparents. There were numerous games like tic-tac-toe and a pigs race which were a notable source of attraction for the children. Along with visiting the carnival the children also witnessed the 5

Riding the Halloween Waves

With the dawn of a new month almost upon us, and the most spine-chilling holiday of the year just around the corner, we would like to share our thoughts on how you can make this Halloween, or post-Halloween season for that matter, an absolute thriller for you and your friends.

First and foremost, come the events organized by the hard-working Engineering Student’s Society itself. Topping the list of hair-raising events is the Glow Party coming up on Friday, November 9. With a ticket that costs just five bucks, you and your friends can enjoy a late night gathering at The Ranch, complete with drinks, glow sticks, and of course, the budding community of engineers at U of A. For activities to do at home, we suggest getting together with your community and putting up the most aesthetically pleasing Halloween decorations you can get your hands on. Pumpkin carving, costume designing, or simply watching a movie (horror of course!) are all activities bound to get you in the Halloween spirit and of course, take your mind off the stresses of university life.

We wish you a very happy and exhilarating Halloween on behalf of the ESS and remember to always take it easy!

Midterm Tricks and Treats

By Roanne Andaya It’s that time of the year: while others are decorating their lawns and stocking up

on candy for Halloween, many of us are studying to get that passing grade on the midterm exam. It’s no easy feat. Juggling five midterms, extra-curricular activities, and upcoming assignments is not easy nor fun. It is, however, doable.

So whether these are your first set of midterms or your very last, here are some tips and tricks on surviving this month.

Good luck to everyone writing midterm exams. Once they’re finished, take some time to treat yourself by doing something you love during Reading Week. You’re almost there, keep on pushing through!

Mineralology and Petrology Museum (B08, Earth Sciences Building): relive the four months of your life you either spent identifying rocks and minerals for EAS 210 or ignoring your friends taking EAS 210 because they couldn’t see a rock without identifying it.

Five quotes you might want to put up on your wall

By Mohammad Abdullah Hashmi Into the melting pot of university success brew a numerous amount of skills, behaviors, and attitudes like belief, work ethic, and persistence to name but a few. There has never been a fixed formula for success, but I believe that in everyone’s formula, you can expect to find strong, unbridled motivation. With mental wellness experts constantly talking about how important it is to be your own cheerleader, I would like to share some wise quotes with you which might rally the troops of inspiration in you and help you see the path to success in a clearer way.

1. Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible. – Francis of Assisi This quote does a wonderful job at shedding light on the progressive nature of a persistent and striving human being. One first begins by mastering the basics of a craft, which they then build upon until they unlock doors nobody before them knew how to open.

2. Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly. ― Robert F. Kennedy With the thrill that comes with starting something new also comes the much-feared possibility of failure. It is only when one accepts this possibility that they can do great things.

3. Staying positive does not mean that things will turn out okay. Rather it is knowing that you will be okay no matter how things turn out. – Unknown A quote that sums up the entire concept of self-care. Positive energy, optimism, and the ability to approach any and everything with a smile on your face are what make you resilient to the pits and bumps that crop up along the road of life.

4. Hard times don’t create heroes. It is during the hard times when the ‘hero’ within us is revealed. – Bob Riley How one deals with the trials and tribulations they face is what determines their level of ‘heroism’.

A venerable hero is a person who strives for self-improvement, remains true to their values, and possesses the determination to achieve their goals no matter the sacrifice.

5. Every minute you waste browsing memes, you could be solving integral equations. – Unknown There is probably no quote which explains time management better than this one. This isn’t on the list to deter you from taking a break and relaxing one in a while (which is a necessary learning habit). Rather, it emphasizes the importance of those small moments we all take little heed about that we could instead utilize.

Make some time for romance this Reading Week, or maybe just nap a bunch. Be realistic: how do you really want to spend your time?

Spend some time outside this Reading Week, letting the soothing sights and sounds of nature bring you inner peace… unless it’s cold. Then just change your desktop background to a picture of a mountain or something.

Catch up on your sleep this Reading Week after those late nights spent reading about the three St. Bernard puppies at the Humane Society and measuring the dimensions of your bachelor suite to see if you can accommodate three giant dogs studying for midterms.

After living off of a diet of bagels and snack wraps for the last six weeks, treat yourself to some real food this Reading Week.

Alternatively, eat plain tortilla chips as your watch 5 straight hours of children make impossibly complicated meals in a Food Network reality show. Same thing, really.

Get some exercise this Reading Week by running out of time to do all the things you said you were going to do. Maybe throw some crunches in there too.
