Creative Writing Workshop The ESS Publications Team held a Creative Writing Workshop as part of the Engineering Art Show in March. Behold, the one thing engineers have the most: writing. Worry not, it wasn’t report or essay writing. Creative writing exercises different parts of your brain, helps generate all sorts of ideas and can be immensely therapeutic. The purpose of the session was to help attendees overcome starting trouble and be comfortable using writing as an outlet. Writing prompts were provided and the Jr. Editors of The Bridge also engaged in the writing session. Participants had 20 minutes to write. The following are a few of the writing prompts, which you at home can use for your inspiration in your own creative writing. Some of the Jr. Editors have chosen to publish their responses to the prompts, which can be found on page 12.

Before you begin, a quick how-to! 1) Pick a writing prompt 2) Spend some time understanding the prompt, but don’t overthink it 3) Jot down words, doodles and sentences to get your ideas flowing! 4) Briefly think about the structure: Essay? Story? Poem? Comic strip? 1st/2nd/3rd person perspective? 5) What engineering concepts come to mind that you can use to make your piece stand out from something the general public might write about? 6) Understand your end goal: what should the audience take away from your masterpiece? 7) Start writing. Don’t spend much time rewording or deleting, keep it flowing, and edit afterwards!

Poem Prompt #1 Stephen Edgar Dreaming at the Speed of Light Seen from that famous ray of light Discharging from the town hall tower On the last stroke of noon, The hands would stand forever at that hour As though the holocaust of blinding white That set it all in train, When present, past and future were triune, Were come again, The endless now on which the blessed take flight. The falling autumn leaves would stall Above the lawn, their futile red A stationary fire; The dog erupting from the pond would spread In hanging glints its diamantÊ shawl Of shaken spray midair; The blue arc of the wave would climb no higher, A gauze of glare And water that would neither break nor sprawl. And as that woman turned her head, The streaming ripples of her hair A painted banderole Impastoed on the wind, she’d be aware At once of all the living and the dead And those whose lives would come Embodied round her, bodying the whole Continuum Of all they had imagined and had said. And every thought would undergo This rallentando, every word Would grind down to a halt Midsyllable, interminably heard, But charged with full intention even so, And purity of tone, Free from distortion and for none to fault, None to condone, A knowledge only for the blessed to know. Poem Prompt #2 Carol Jenkins Flat-Pack Keats starts off his new life folding instructions for Ikea flat-pack furniture, studies physics at night school, buys a child ticket to take his bicycle on a romantic train trip, begins to understand negative capability in the railway overpass, and folds things with poetry. Out in Padstow, a 43 year old female cabalist, who has squeezed a flat pack dark cherry veneer computer desk into her apartment, unfolds the assembly instructions, and finds a dark universe is continuing to accelerate from the single sheet of photon paper, which becomes – sequentially – a bicycle, a child, a ticket and instructions on how to live as, or on, or by, a cherry wood desk, a farm, a tea chest and any planet that has atmosphere.

Poem Prompt #3 There Will Come Soft Rains Sara Teasdale, 1884 - 1933 (War Time) This is a poem found in a short story by the same name (by Ray Bradbury, a famous author!), describing a “smart” house that does everything (cook, clean, speak). It’s still running after a nuclear war has wiped out all of mankind, but our technology has survived.

There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground, And swallows circling with their shimmering sound; And frogs in the pools singing at night, And wild plum trees in tremulous white, Robins will wear their feathery fire Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire; And not one will know of the war, not one Will care at last when it is done. Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree If mankind perished utterly; And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn, Would scarcely know that we were gone.

Submissions from the Writing Workshop The Ultimate Treehouse In response to Image Prompt #1 By Mohammad Abdullah Hashmi, First Year Engineering

Not so deep into the thicket of the lush, green forest was a mighty oak tree, its bark the colour of roasted coffee beans and its leaves fresh and verdant. It sat there, a monument of green and gold, with sunlight bouncing off its thick leaves, making it dazzle like a princess’s tiara. Upon its outstretched branches sat several small cubicles, handcrafted out of wood and made to look simple and sweet to a passerby. Inside this treehouse however, a whole different world existed, with a decor that seemed to almost rebel against the natural beauty of the luscious forest of the great outdoors.

In this treehouse there were several cube-shaped rooms, each of them sporting a different wonder inside. Sitting on the thinnest part of the longest branch was a compartment painted a cool and refreshing blue on the inside. Inside this room, the slits that let in the golden beams of sunlight were covered by silk curtains, and on the shaggy, carpeted floor lay several mattresses, each made out of the finest foam and covered in the most colourful sheets. Covered with duck-feather-filled quilts, a few sleepy souls dozed off on the luxurious mattresses, their worries drowned out in the comfort of a warm and inviting bed.

Constructed closer to the bark of the tree in a thicker region of the same branch was a slightly larger room connected to the first by two ropes furnished with rungs so as to look like a horizontal ladder. This room was more brightly coloured, its walls painted the colour of a midsummer sunset. Inside this room, there was much more life, with people moving around, making conversation, and of course, feasting on the exquisite food laid on the long, glass table right below the window. Upon the table, there were numerous dishes, each more palatable than the last. Steam rose upwards from the gravy-dressed roast beef, and in the corner, long queues of people stood impatiently to try out a slice of 11

honeyed cake with a glass of cold chocolate milk. With people jostled about the room with full plates and the sound of plates and silverware resonating everywhere, this tiny compartment in a modest treehouse seemed somewhat finer than a royal banquet.

Finally, on a completely separate branch, sat the largest of the rooms. With walls painted the colour of ripe blueberries, this room was by far most sensational. Laden with a shining, black granite floor and a dazzling disco ball on the ceiling, this room was the final stop for an avid visitor. Here, where people wore reflective jeans and blinking glasses, it was second nature to lose yourself to dance, fun, and games. The throbbing music, the energetic dance floor, and the twinkle of happiness and euphoria is people’s eyes was enchanting.

It was here, in this treehouse, that people could take a break from the stresses of the world, and come somewhere far away from others to relax in there manner of choosing, whether it be dining on the finest food available, or dancing until you no longer can, or simply escaping consciousness and enter the merry world of dreams. This place was open to everybody who chose to come, and in this wonderful hub of joy, there was not a worry in the world that anyone could have.

There Will Come Soft Rains – Part 2: 2 Soft 2 Rains In response to Poem Prompt #3: A continuation of “There Will Come Soft Rains” By Abby Paul, Third Year Environmental Engineering

What then? What change did we seek to enact? The greed, the fear that we cannot retract? The proof of the matter in us gone, Our memory sinks upon the last dawn. No creature, no soil, no rain, no leaf Will experience a solitary semblance of grief Though neither will we, for we are not there, If not for ourselves, for what did we care?

A Desire for Longevity In response to Poem Prompt #1 By Aishwarya Venkitachalam, Fourth Year Mechanical Engineering

Standing still amidst the surrounding air ready to launch at full speed, the top. A soft hum characterized by A desire for longevity, And a love for origins and futures alike. The lever, an ancient invention, Forced into its furthest extent, Propelling a reaction, Atoms, energy, transition. The hum gets louder. Glistening surfaces in motion slipping away from a boisterous past into a calm undulation. Left-right, up-down, side to side Round and round. Continuous. Yet fleeting.
