5 Self-Care Tips to Get Ready for the School Year -Roanne Andaya Summer is soon coming to an end, and that means that a new academic year is approaching. Although it may be too early to start thinking about the school year, it’s never too early to start a self-care routine that will prepare you for the new school year, while also serving as a way to relax before the year starts.

Self-Care Tip #1: Get Those 8 Hours of Sleep It’s summertime, and while it may seem like a great time to party and game all night, it’s also extremely important to catch up on your sleep. Creating a stable and consistent sleep schedule will help you to feel your best, and can help reduce irritability, drowsiness, mood swings, and increase concentration. Getting these things under control before the school year starts can help maintain a sleep schedule and stay well rested throughout the year.

Self-Care Tip #2: Eat Healthy Incorporating healthy food into your diet can give your body the sustenance it needs to recharge before the school year.

While most of us aren’t looking forward for the sleepless nights and countless all-nighters that we’d have to pull, having that sustenance to back our bodies up will benefit us in the long run. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables this summer so that your body can soak in the natural vitamins and nutrients it needs. Having fruits and vegetables during the year can also help with your focus and boost your energy.

Self-Care Tip #3: Go for a Walk Sometimes, getting in touch with nature is just the relaxation that we need. This summer try to go for a walk to your nearest park, or spend a day exploring the River Valley or Hawrelak Park. Go for a picnic with friends or travel alone to spend some time with yourself. Allow yourself to relax and enjoy the summer breeze before the stressful school year starts.

Self-Care Tip #4: Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

Did I mention hydrate? Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day—that’s about 2 litres of water—to prevent dehydration and help your health overall. Rejuvenate your skin before the school year starts. Drinking water can also help you feel more energized and awake.

Ensuring that you are hydrated before school begins can help create a habit for you to continue hydrating once the stress kicks in.

Self-Care Tip #5: Start a Journal and Set Some Goals Starting a journal is a great way to organize your thoughts and your feelings. Having a creative outlet is good during stressful times and can shift your thinking from negative to positive. Creating this habit and bringing it into the school year can help a lot with stress and on the days where we don’t feel our 100%. Setting goals is another good use of a journal, and make sure that you keep track of your goals to motivate yourself and reward yourself once you’ve achieved them.

Above all, make sure you enjoy your summer break and get the rest and relaxation that you need. Use some of these tips, or use your own to get ready for the 2019-2020 academic year

Let’s Talk Tech

The magic of OLED Technology -Mohammad Abdullah Hashmi From the time when an electron gun had to be fired at a phosphor screen to display the TV shows and movies we so fervently enjoy; we have come a long way. Today, we have pushed past liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and entered the realm of solid-state devices, the most recent of which is the Organic Light Emitting Diode. This piece of revolutionary technology has granted us with screens that grace our eyes with video that is far more fluid, defined, and chromatic. From TVs that render the stars of our galaxy and the wild beasts of our jungles in more detail than ever before, to screens we can fold and bend, OLEDs have taken mobile and television entertainment to a whole new level.

In order to get a basic idea of how this technology does the wonders it does, we need to recall some basic chemistry. Intro chemistry classes have taught us that electrons congregate around a nucleus in shells or energy levels, and the further away the energy level is from the nucleus, the higher the energy the electron has. In an organic semiconductor, the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) and the Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) are analogous to the valence and conduction bands in metals, that is, a small amount of energy can move electrons from the HOMO to the LUMO. In an OLED, this energy is provided by applying a voltage across a layer of organic material sandwiched between two electrodes. A current of electrons flows through the device from cathode to anode, as electrons are injected into the LUMO of the organic layer at the cathode and withdrawn from the HOMO at the anode. This latter process may also be described as the injection of electron holes into the HOMO. Electrostatic forces bring the electrons and the holes towards each other and they recombine to form an excited state. The decay of this excited state results in a relaxation of the energy levels of the electron, accompanied by emission of visible light.

The above explanation, while being a mouthful in and of itself, is just a scratch on the surface of the complex engineering principles involved in the manufacturing of OLEDs. However, consumers are more interested in the bang they get for their buck, so let’s dive deeper into some cool OLED tech that’s available in the market.

LG's OLED TV R (model 65R9) It is the world's first OLED TV that can be rolled like a sheet. It was announced in early 2019, and can roll up into its base, and has three viewing options - full view, line view (where only a part of the screen is showing, and then the display can display six different options, including weather, clock and a home dashboard) and zero view, in which the display is entirely in the base.

Samsung Galaxy Fold Samsung's first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, features a 7.3" 1536 x 2152 foldable Infinity Flex AMOLED display that folds inside, in addition to a secondary cover display - a 4.6" 840Ă—1960 Super AMOLED.

LG OLED W9 LG's OLED W9 Wallpaper TV is based on LG's WRGB 4K panels, in 65" and 77" sizes. The wallpaper TV design offers a clean form where the input box is separated from the TV panel using a single cable. The W9 is based on LG's 2nd-gen Alpha 9 intelligent processor the enables LG's ThinQ AI to offer new display algorithms and Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant.

These are just a few of the numerous OLED devices out there for you to enjoy. Human venture into the realm of electrical and computer engineering has shown just how much we can impact society and the world of modern entertainment by building on existing technology in creative ways. The OLED was the successor to the simple LED, and in the future, who knows what we might see sitting in our living room.

Volunteering Opportunities This Summer

"If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else", said Booker T. Washington. What could be a better way to lift up someone other than volunteering?

Volunteering should be a vital part of every student's life.

Apart from adding to your resume, it also helps in reducing stress and staying active. It's a great way of taking out time from your busy schedule to make a difference. Volunteering also helps one build confidence and make new connections.

Summer is an exceptional time to do extensive volunteering. So here are five places you can volunteer this summer:

1. Hope mission Reverend Harold Edwardson laid the foundation of the Hope Mission in 1929 by serving meals to a considerable number of unemployed and homeless people. Hope Mission now works as a non-profit Christian social care for the needy in Alberta. Their services include meals & critical care, shelter & housing, addiction recovery & spiritual care and kids & youth outreach. 2. Canadian Red Cross Canadian Red Cross is a non-profit organisation for the vulnerable in Canada. 3. World Triathlon Series Edmonton 2019 Events

World Triathlon Series Edmonton is offering a volunteer opportunity for the ITU World Triathlon to be held at Hawrelak Park from July 19-21 this year. 4. Ronald McDonald House Charities Ronald McDonald House Charities Alberta provides a home to families who visit Alberta for medical treatment of their children. Established in 1985, Ronald McDonald House has helped millions of families. You can volunteer for their Meals that Mend program with a group of friends by preparing a meal for about 60 people staying at the Ronald McDonald House. 5. Voice for Animals If you are an animal lover and intend on saving the lives of the voiceless you should definitely volunteer with the Voice for Animals. This nonprofit organisation aims at protecting animals from numerous lethal sectors such as entertainment, factory farming, sport hunting etc.
