“STEAM” that fits Solano County Our theme for this year’s Education Forum is Full STEAM Ahead: Preparing Solano Students for the Workforce of 2020.

STEAM is traditionally an acronym that references science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. However, Solano County school districts have worked vigorously to develop early learning foundations and Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways that are responsive to local industries and labor forecasts.

Our collective resourcefulness and flexibility has enabled us to create real-world opportunities for our young people that prepare students with skills that are relevant to their success in college or career fields. Careers in Solano County Solano County is positioned on Interstate 80 between Sacramento and San Francisco.

The county has quickly emerged as a location of choice for industries seeking to move outside of the Bay Area and Silicon Valley. The county is home to large manufacturers, such as Jelly Belly, Genentech, and Anheuser-Busch. Solano County is also home to several key apprenticeship programs, as well as Solano Community College that recently received the distinction of offering a four-year degree in Biomanufacturing.

The county is well positioned to provide our young people with the tools and resources they need to become productive citizens of the county.

Demographic

Solano County spans 906 square miles and has a population of over 440,207, with a diverse resident population being 38.7% white, 26.2% Hispanic, 15.7% Asian-Pacific Islanders, and 14.8% Black.

Solano County’s population grew by 6.5% between 2010–2016. Annual growth in the 2015 to 2020 period is forecast to average 1.1%.

Between 2015 and 2020, the largest employment increases will occur in education and healthcare (+2,600 jobs), construction (+1,800 jobs), leisure and hospitality (+1,700 jobs), and professional services (+1,500 jobs). Together, these sectors will account for 68% of net job creation in the county.

Economic Forecast

Some projections suggest that by the year 2020, 36% of jobs will require “some college,” and an additional 39% of jobs will require a college degree. However, beyond the need for education, the workplace is seeking essential new skills such as professionalism, teamwork, and communication. Employers also value the ability to continue learning. Creativity and innovation will also be particularly important as new workers compete in a rapidly changing global economy.

California increased by 3.4%, whereas employment in the greater Bay Area grew by 4.0%. In Solano County, a total of 2,700 wage and salary jobs were created, representing an increase of 2.1%. Most major sectors gained jobs. The largest increases were observed in manufacturing (+630 jobs), leisure and hospitality (+600 jobs), education and healthcare (+550 jobs), and wholesale and retail trade

SCOE Job Skill Certification Program Career Readiness

The Work-Ready Certificate Program for students is a three week workshop providing over twenty hours of work related instruction and support. The program helps students locate job opportunities, learn interview skills and develop a resume. Workshop topics include: Time Management Resume Writing Job Search & Applications Cover Letters Social Media Content Work Ethic Customer Service Teamwork Appropriate Dress Interview Techniques Mock Interviews The Work-Ready Certificate program is coordinated by the Solano County Office of Education and is presented in school districts throughout Solano County.

Workforce Development SCOE partners with various local and state resources to assist students with intellectual and/or physical disabilities in developing work and life skills that fit each individual’s unique needs and abilities. Workforce development also includes experience for students in businesses across Solano County.

Workforce Development Programs include: California Career Innovations (CCi), California Promoting the Readiness of Minors on Supplemental Security Income (CaPROMISE), Transition Partnership Program/ Workability II (TPP), Workability I (WAI).

Supporting Education & Student Opportunities In Solano County The economic vitality of our community is dependent on good schools that are preparing our young people for the future. SCOE works together with our county’s six school districts and one community college to ensure that our young people are equipped with a first-class education, so they can succeed in a global economy and become active and productive citizens.

Collaborative partnerships throughout our county have enabled us to leverage resources and increase opportunities for our young people to learn.
