New Organic Entrepreneurs 2025 – 2028

Investment: £700,000 (£220,000 for Year One)

Goal: To invest in the next generation of organic entrepreneurs to boost and diversify the market.

The need

Despite the continued steady growth of the organic market (worth £3.7 billion in 2024 – double that of 10 years ago), organic entrepreneurs struggle to gain traction; there is limited access to startup funding, knowledge and peer support. Small business owners are stretched, and almost 60% of new UK businesses fail within their first three years. These challenges prevent the emergence of new, diverse, and vibrant voices and products in the organic sector.

Project objectives

• Scale the programme across the UK, reaching up to 180 additional businesses by August 2028.

• Support a broad diversity of entrants, focusing on underrepresented demographics.

• Increase the supply of organic produce across the entire food supply chain.

• Continuously evolve the programme to ensure it addresses real-world challenges.

• Promotion of, and advocacy for, agroforestry, including through case studies, Agroforestry Shows, ambassador network.

Project activities

• Train entrepreneurs with essential skills and knowledge to operate sustainable businesses – we will measure improved financial capability, business growth, and organic conversion.

• Build a supportive and inclusive community that encourages collaboration and shared values –we will measure diversity across participants as well as sustained relationships and networks.

• Provide mentoring from experienced professionals and facilitate networking opportunities – we will measure knowledge gained, confidence and networks built.

Why we’re best placed

The Soil Association are pioneers in the organic movement, having developed the world’s first organic standards in the 1960s. We have almost 80 years of experience supporting and scaling organic businesses and have been a trusted and leading voice throughout this time.

We work with diverse food and farming entrepreneurs at Woodoaks Farm, creating a thriving hub of organic food and farming businesses to develop short, farmer-focused supply chains to reconnect consumers with food production, producers and nature.

The New Organic Entrepreneurs (NOE) programme was codesigned in 2024 with a cohort of six producers with first-hand experience of the challenges of setting up their own businesses across the food, farming and forestry sectors. Informed by the co-design process, a pilot phase began in March 2025 to support 21 Entrepreneurs with the necessary skills, tools and community support to build sustainable businesses and thrive in the organic market. Over 70 applications were received from across the UK, demonstrating a high demand for support and the need to scale up.

How you can help

A gift of:

£10,000 could fund a launch event and ongoing networking events for one NOE cohort.

£18,300 could support impact monitoring of the NOE journey, including business growth and challenges, helping to build a better understanding of their support needs.

£25,000 could enable five New Organic Entrepreneurs to complete the programme.
