COMMODORE’S REPORT Phil Warwick Commodore

O

ur Season 2017/18 Keelboat and Centreboard prize nights were very successful and I was proud be a part of the official presentations on

both evenings.

Keelboat Prize Night was well attended with many of the usual winners and place getters taking home the Season’s “bragging rights” and silverware for another Season. There were quite a few new faces which will no doubt ensure the continued success and competitive participation of the Keelboat Section into the future. Our Keelboat Captain Laurence Hansen and his Committee must be congratulated for a well-run evening, along with the support of our On Water Group and Flag officers.

The Centreboard Prize night was most enjoyable, in particular an initiative taken by the Centreboard Captain Kate Jones and her Committee, in devising a modified format and layout for the evening incorporating the use of the Promenade Marquee for the Junior Sailors. They were able to relax and enjoy some additional activities following their results, while the Senior Members of the Section received their well-deserved accolades at the conclusion of a very successful Season.

Our Junior and Senior Centreboard Sailors continue to produce some amazing result in State, National and International Regattas, which reinforces our commitment to establish the best Training and On Water facilities in Western Australia.

With the completion of the 2017/18 Sailing Season I must acknowledge the efforts of our On Water Staff and our many Volunteers who provide their time and work tirelessly to provide our sailors with the best possible training and well organised sailing.

The Power Season Time Trialling is now in full swing and competitors are enjoying some mixed weather conditions and exceptional individual performances. These results have certainly thrown up some variables for the weekly fleet handicap results and the coveted Least Points Lost pennants, which at this point does not favour any particular team.

SoPYC continues to lead the CPYC State Time Trialling Teams Results following the first two rounds of competition.

The reinvigoration of other river clubs, and in particular Royal Perth Yacht Club, may see a future challenge for the Season’s Individual and Teams Championship Trophies.

our Strategic and Operational Plans which are also being reviewed - annually in the case of the Operational Plans and biennially for the Strategic Plan.

A special thank you to our Works Chairman, David Luketina who is doing a fantastic job facilitating these Workshops. Once the initial workshops are completed the collective information will be collated and presented to Members and Staff to ensure we have a very clear view of the specific needs and priorities for the Club over the next decade.

Feedback from the workshops to date is proving to be very valuable with many new ideas and some common themes developing. This goes well to ensure that we continue as a Club to provide the best possible amenities and services for our Members into the future.

I thank everybody who has made the time and effort to attend these workshops to date. Your input is invaluable.

SHAPING THE FUTURE FORUMS The Management Committee has embarked on developing a plan which will identify the infrastructure and assets the Club will need in the next ten years. To facilitate the process a series of workshops are being conducted and members of committees, sections and volunteers such as the race officers, women sailors and junior members have been invited to share their thoughts and ideas for the future.

We are conscious that the plan needs to be aligned with

A

I write this report the winter season is well and truly under way, with good numbers of keelboats competing on both Wednesdays and Sundays in the Winter Frostbite series.

The Power Time Trialling section is experiencing good numbers on the water every Saturday and thus far two CPYC events have been participated in, with SoPYC once again showing the way. Our thanks to the many volunteers who are giving up their time to attend the club and undertake check point duty, without you and your support our fleet would not be as good as they are.

The House Committee has finished its deliberations on a member satisfaction survey and that is now with you through Survey Monkey. If you haven’t yet completed the survey, please take the time to complete and submit it, for it is this vital information the committee needs to model activities in the club to ensure good satisfaction.

The House Committee is conducting its business in accordance with the House Operational Plan that was adopted at the start of this Yacht Club year. It is important for this to work efficiently and effectively and that all sections follow the plan and submit items for the committee to look at, if we are to make changes that members are looking for.

In this period, the Food and Beverage staff have once again excelled, with a growing number of functions that keep our Finance Committee happy and allow us to make changes as and when required. So my heartfelt congratulations and thanks to Fiona and her staff for a job well done.

To assist Fiona and to ensure your needs are met, it is essential when planning an event for your sections that the first port of call is the Food and Beverage Manager's office to ensure the dates are available and do not conflict with events that have already been booked.

The Kitchen staff battle when 50 people come and order at the same time and expect their meals immediately. In order to ease the load we ask that wherever possible you book a table and a time prior to the day. This will assist in planning. If you come in with a party, I request that the whole table go up and order at the same time if you all want to eat together as the meals are prepared in the order in which the kitchen staff get your order. If there is a large number of members and guests in the Members bar and Quarter Deck, don’t wait till the last minute to order, this also causes a bottleneck.

The SoPYC was invited by The City of Melville to assist them with their 50th Anniversary celebrations with a fournight event called “Art in Place, Confluence” - a striking indigenous art projected on the boats both outside the club rooms just off the main jetty and along Canning Beach road taking in the boats on Jetty 7 and the club moorings. This also gave us the opportunity to open our gates to the public

for four nights and to host a spectacular dinner in the Ward Room and on the Quarter Deck on the Friday night.

As an added bonus it so happened that the club hosted a CPYC dinner on the Saturday night which gave the members of Kindred clubs bonus entertainment as well.

Our thanks to the staff for their great assistance once again but more importantly to those boat owners who gave up their time and put their boats on the water for without their support we would not have had a show at all. A big thank you to all involved. Not only did we provide a good venue and display for our members but also the public who were invited to join us with special membership packages during those four nights. It also gave us the opportunity to forge closer ties with the city of Melville.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the Mess Night this year and my thanks to Rear Commodore Ralph Newton for stepping up and acting as President of the Mess for what I have been told was another exceptional evening in the Wardroom with the CEO of STS Leeuwin as the guest speaker.

This event is now dual gender and is gaining popularity each year so get in early next year and join us when we once again enjoy fine food, great wine and fabulous company in a traditional military mess environment.

The ladies luncheon group continues to host some great events and our thanks to Luciana for the all the great work she has done during the past year. Luciana will be stepping down as coordinator in August and we’d like to welcome Chris Nyeholt as the new coordinator.

The Grand Sponsors continue to grow, and this must be put down to the hard work of Cally and her committee and the networking events they are holding that encourage people to join the ranks.

The Functions committee is hard at work organising the Commodores Ball and it is amazing the work Elph and her hard-working committee undertake in conjunction with Fiona Whife and the F&B Team In closing this report, I have a request to make to all members. Please show consideration to the staff, and treat them as you would like to be treated in your work place.

If you have a complaint it should be addressed to a Flag Officer or the General Manager, not the staff member. It is their work place and if they are to be directed, it is by the General Manager not you as a member. They cannot have 2000 bosses, only one.

Once again enjoy all your boating activities no matter what your preference is.

N

ow in the depth of winter…. No, no icecaps or snow, just glorious sunny days with a few showers to keep the gardens growing, and give us something to complain about!!

Seriously, our Wednesday races have been a mixed affair with only one or two getting reasonable breezes and many having perfectly smooth glassy, mirror-still waters, with only the tidal currents to get our yachts moving along. One race was abandoned even before the start.

At the time of writing we are about to have Race 6 of the IGA Frostbite Series, and the forecast looks like a bit of rain and some wind for Sunday: yippee !

As usual, quite a lot is happening every day down at your Club.

A couple of weeks ago our power boats and a couple of yachts, volunteered to be the projection screen for the City of Melvilles’ “Art in Place, Confluence” light show. It was an enormous success with about 3000 residents visiting the light show along Canning Beach Road, and inside our Club grounds. Our F&B staff also catered for a large increase in meals and bar sales. For those interested, all of the colour photographs are available at no cost.

Talking of Power Yachts, Time Trialing season is well under way, and the numbers have been good. Last weekend the Power Section staged their Ti-Tu Trophy and had 47 power yachts from our Club. Three other clubs compete for this trophy. I called into their social night following the Ti-Tu Trophy Race, and witnessed the “Wide World of Sports”: what a lot of fun!! If you own a power boat, and that includes any yacht with a motor, then come and join in the fun that the Power Section have. They are really a very social group, and always looking for more participation from members.

Our On-Water-Committee have just completed a very brief member survey asking for feedback on the Twilight Sailing night. It was overwhelming in favour of a return to Wednesday nights. OK, so lets get behind Wednesdays, and make it a successful night in the forthcoming season. We are open to any suggestion to help get our Twilights back to where they were many years ago, with much larger crowds, music, BBQs, whatever… please send us your suggestions: we want to hear from you.

The 50th Geraldton Race is looming, and we are delighted to tell you that we already have 4 paid entries (never heard of, this early, before now!) and we have at least the same number who have firmly committed to this Race. Lets hope the weather plays its part and gives the hardy offshore members a good race.

The OWG are also busy organising monthly “Topics Nights” and they have been steadily getting more popular with interesting topics and very good speakers. Last month we had Dr Kim Klaka give a talk and supply copious professional notes which are available on our web site. The next talk is by Max Stack of the Bureau of Meteorology, “Wind and Waves”.

Our Sailing Committee has been professionally run by Laurence Hansen now for a long time, and Laurence has indicated he is stepping down, so we welcome Terry Newby who has recently been appointed Vice Captain, Sailing. Rob Male has also stepped down, so we are looking for more committed volunteers to fill these important positions.

Staff Changes

W

e have had some recent changes in administration staff with Alison Wilson, who provided the administration support for the Pens and Mooring Committee and secretarial support for the general manager and other staff leaving us in early July.

Jessica Oakley will commence in these roles on 25th July.

Jessica has been the marina co-ordinator at MOFSC and marina and facilities administrator at Fremantle Sailing Club prior to joining us at SoPYC. Please welcome Jessica to her new role when you meet her.

Security Services For the last few months the Security Committee has been reviewing the security services at the Club and has gone through a rigorous tender and selection process to select a new provider. We had nine tenders all of which were high quality making the choice challenging. The Club has settled on MCS Security who will provide night-time static guard services, Saturday morning gate control during the summer season and crowd control services for functions and general security services. The contract commences on 8th August, 2018 and is for a period of two years with six monthly reviews. MCS Security provides security for Fremantle Sailing Club, the DoT section of Hillarys Boat Harbor and AQUA and Mindarie marina. The company also provides security to many of Perth’s shopping centres and event/concert security at venues around Perth including the new stadium.

As part of the current project of updating the Club’s governance documents to comply with new laws governing associations like the Club, management committee is considering a change so that the Half Yearly general meeting would only be held if there were a proposal to increase subscriptions and fees by more than CPI (that is, CPI + 2%), or if there were other business that couldn’t wait until September. As there may be strong opinions about making such a change, the Club would be interested in hearing members’ thoughts about this before we finalise a draft to put to members formally.

If any member would like a copy of the current draft rules (which are being drafted to replace the current constitution) and current draft bylaws (which are being drafted to replace the current rules), please let the Club know and a copy will be sent. The Club welcomes any comments on the drafts.

Travel Lift Bookings Leading into summer, boat owners will be thinking of the maintenance they have to do on their vessels. Bookings for the travel lift will fill quickly for September and October and closer to Christmas. Should members want to avoid the rush and high demand period leading into the season, August and early September will have less demand and this is a great time to get your booking in before the rush.

Updated Associations Incorporation Act 2015 The Management Committee propose to call a meeting of members to receive and adopt the updated Rules (Constitution Rules and By Laws) of the Club in October.

Some of the changes are mandated under the updated Act, so this will be a compliance matter when considering the document and some changes will be to modernise the existing document and tidy up any clauses that are no longer appropriate, or compliant with various pieces of legislation. The Act also mandates some modest changes to the way the Annual accounts of an Association are presented and our 2017-2018 accounts will reflect the changes. With the change and updating of the Act, Associations, of which we are one, need to amend their Constitutions by 2019.

Prior to the Rules being brought to members for adoption, Liquor Licencing and Dept. Commerce (old name) will have received, reviewed and commented on the proposed changes as they are required to do under the Act. Any amendments that the regulators require will have been made to the document prior to it being presented to Members.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT

T

he challenges of maintaining membership levels at all sporting clubs is constant throughout WA, and those challenges are no exception at South of Perth Yacht Club. When financial pressure is applied to the home budget the club fees are one of the first to go. That along with the transient nature of sailing and boating puts us under constant pressure to ensure we maintain a strong membership base. The Membership Committee is constantly working on ideas and ways to attract new members to the club. In November we again embark on our annual Open Day to attract those that are in the market to either buy a boat, and need to pen or park their vessel at SoPYC. This, along with trying to attract crew for the sailors in our club looking for help on sailing days. The Social membership is also very transient as members find they do not use the club as much as they would like so opt to leave. We are however, in a great position and location and with the new apartments being built in the area that offers a great opportunity to welcome new residents of Applecross to our yacht club in many membership categories. Social membership will be a significant attraction to those new residents as they look for venues to entertain and relax.

The Membership Committee will embark on a marketing exercise in the coming months to attract these potential new members.

The Open Day in November will once again be supported by the Dyflken foundation with the “Little Dove” once again offering the community an opportunity to tour this

magnificent ship, this time with new motors fitted.

We will have 6ix on board for the day broadcasting and at this stage John Burgess will be the announcer for the day.

There are also many activities being planned for the day to attract families to the club. Junior sailing being one of the more important activities on the day. We look forward to another successful promotional day and welcome friends and family of current members on the day to examine the many opportunities the club has to offer.

In November we will also welcome the new members who have joined the club in the past 6 months to the New Members Cocktail Party. This is an opportunity for all new members to meet with the Commodore, Flag Officers and Captains of the sections as well as other like minded members.

None of the events or induction evenings would be as successful without the dedication of the Membership Committee who have been with me for a long time. To Ian Blanckensee, Ann McCluskey, Leanne Fallows, Des Lewis, John Meldrum and Steve Leech I extend my gratitude.

Without their support we would not achieve results we do on Open Days, Induction nights and the New Members Cocktail Parties.

We look forward to seeing all members on the Open Day in November.

LADIES LUNCHEON GROUP May 10th Ladies Luncheon

O

ur guest speaker for May was Alison Touzel who is an experienced bra fit specialist with Intimo Lingerie.

She spoke about her journey with breast cancer and how it affected her life. 5 years on from having a mastectomy and chemotherapy she is now cancer free.

Alison was able to share her experience to help other women going through breast cancer by gaining qualifications and specialising in Mastectomy, bra and prosthetic fittings. T

he guest speaker in June was Gayle Smith. Beautician and Owner of Nishe Belle, Beauty on the Avenue.

We were very happy to have this amazing woman with us sharing her brave and incredible story. She has been an elite athlete, a fitness fanatic and a successful business woman.

Then an operation in 2011 changed her life forever.

Being diagnosed with a brain tumour that would impact her ability to speak and walk, wasn’t something that she expected to experience in her active and busy life. After long hours in surgery it was a long road to recovery, with intense physio to gain her speech back and learning to walk again, but with the loving support and help from her family and friends and with her own strength, courage and determination, Gayle fought back not only to survive but to flourish and now to go on and help others in the community as she explained. So on behalf of the Ladies Luncheon Group, we would like to thank Gayle Smith for taking the time and sharing her inspirational and life changing story. Also, we would like to thank Fiona and her staff for providing a lovely lunch followed by tea coffee and dessert.

SAILABILITY Seven Seasons of Sailability

S

even years ago, Past Commodore Gerry Drysdale put forward an idea to Melville Rotary and seven years later Sailability is now firmly part of South of Perth Yacht Club.

Winter’s here and while we’re all comfortably ensconced in our winter woolies, it’s time to talk about what’s been happening over winter for Sailability.

This is the time of the year when we look around for new sources of income to support Sailability through into the future. Without our volunteers we would be well and truly stranded.

During the recent “Confluence of Light Show”, three Sailability members manned the car park and raised $40 toward Sailability; thanks to Glenn, Liz and Bob. The Marine Industry Foundation (MIF) has provided a $4,000 grant to Sailability at SoPYC. Public Officer of MIF Colin Bransgrove said the funding is aligned with one of MIF’s two core objectives. “The Foundation provides funds to assist with the training and development of young people in the recreational marine industry and secondly to increase the access and inclusion of all people to recreational boating opportunities.

In this instance MIF is pleased to be supporting a voluntary organization with a solid track record for providing sailing experiences to people with special needs.”

The Little Ferry Company has come on board as a member of the Sailability team. Captains Mark Loader and Rory Burrow and the ferry “Ellie J” are happy to take participants and their carers for a cruise around the river.

What a delight to have them with us.

Many thanks to Kevyn Townley, the M.D. of the Little Ferry Company who has become a club sponsor as well and actively supporting sailing at the club through their sponsorship of the Saturday T-Bone award.

In late June at the Melville Rotary Club meeting, Sailability’s Liz Warman was recognized for her contribution to Sailability with the award of a Paul Harris Fellowship. Part of the award was a contribution of $1,000 used to eradicate polio in the world with the Gates Foundation matching the monies paid by Rotary by two to one.

Now all of this means that we need you to front up for your red shirt. It’s fine having money in the bank and people doing well during the quiet period, but it’s critical that we have bodies on the ground to help get the boats out sailing. While we have a strong core of volunteers, we always need more, as people drop in and out according to their availability.

The next season of Sailability will commence mid October and volunteers, agencies and participants will be notified in September of the

exact date.

Remember that we do have a general maintenance day which is a good excuse to see how every one has survived over winter. You will be advised when.

POWER TORQUE Member Profile: Madeleine Rennie

M

adeleine is regarded as an “Elder Stateswomen” of our Club and Power Section, having been an active member and serving SoPYC since joining in 1975. Madeleine was honoured when asked to officiate at the Opening of Power Yacht Season on 5th May 2018.

Each Saturday during the Power Season, Madeleine is ready and waiting to go out on the water Time Trialling.

This season she has been a regular on Dalussional with Troy Dalglish and Dee Kelly. For a few years prior, Madeleine has been onboard Audacity II with Peter and Kathy Melsom, but of course Madeleine will be remembered by our more senior members as Barry Brittain’s navigator (“Deckie” as he named her) onboard Xantippe for

regular kid playing over near the old Olives Grove Clubhouse, riding her bike and swimming at Como Beach.

At age 12, she went for her first sail on Frank Sampson’s old clinker yacht.

(Frank was the first Commodore of SPYC) In those days, women and girls were not allowed to crew and sail in the competition races. The undaunted Madeleine, signed up to crew dressed as “Bobby” Crawford to sail with the VJ’s fleet at another club. Some skippers wondered why the fresh faced young lad never grew bum fluff.

Still keen on sailing and the river, Madeleine returned to the relocated SoPYC to sail on Saturdays with Skipper Bill Walby and on Wednesdays crewed for John Kirke on his Flying 15.

Madeleine became very involved in life at the Club. Through her passion for cooking and professional interest

an outstanding 26 years until Barry passed away in 2002.

There have been 2 previous profiles published on Madeleine, the first in 1997 written by Alistor McCormack and the latter by Annie McCluskey in 2003.

I’ve been piecing together information, Soundings articles and numerous photos supplied by Madeleine for this update.

Having grown up in South Perth, young Madeleine Crawford was a

in catering, Madeleine and a group of ladies provided delicious home-style meals for all the Club social events and race days. By 1987, the Club house was extended, Yachties Bar, Wardroom and kitchen were built, and the Club employed a professional Chef.

Madeleine’s own catering business was thriving. With encouragement from the Management Committee and co-operation of the chef, Madeleine planned monthly lunches and guest speakers to revitalise the dwindling Ladies Auxiliary. She built the group to what is our present day Ladies Lunch Group. Madeleine displayed natural leadership and management talents.

By 1987 Madeleine was Secretary and Treasurer of the PYC (now CPYC) and remained part of that committee as trophy officer until recently when Brian and Tina Smith took over the role. Madeleine’s contribution to the Power Yacht Committee was recognised in 2001 when she was awarded Life Membership of YWA, a very special and respected award.

Madeleine was a member of the SoPYC House Committee for 6 years and served as Vice Captain and later elected the Captain of Power Section 1989-90, the first female to wear our Club epaulettes.

In 1990 Madeleine was the first

POWER TORQUE women to be elected to Management Committee and served 3 terms holding the Grounds & Parking, then Functions portfolios under P.C.Commodore David Locke Snr. Madeleine gained the reputation for “getting the job done”, even learning the art of pot hole repairs for the carpark! Square patches I’m told, rather than round.

During all this time, as well as competing weekly (and often winning) as navigator for Barry Brittain on Xantippe, Madeleine was busy arranging social events, especially for the Power Section, including weekend camping trips to the Rennie’s Toodyay farm. She and hubby Neville would host members and families for campfire BBQs, games and stories, the making of good yarns and folklore to retell back in the bar.

Despite stepping back a little from

involvement in Club life after having some health issues, Madeleine hasn’t slowed down too much. She is actively involved with a number of Civic groups including Old Mill Theatre group, City of Belmont Japanese – Australian Cultural Exchange Group and the Cervical Cancer support group to name some.

I am in awe of Madeleine’s positive attitude to life, her willingness to “get things done” and her easy leadership style and I thank her personally for the encouragement and advice she has given me since I joined the Power Section in 2003!

he 2018 time trial season is shaping up to be one of the most highly contested for many years. We have become conditioned to accepting the superiority of one or two boats in a season – Bryan Carter’s amazing run of fourteen club championships over a nineteen year span conditioned us to accept this as normal. This was followed up by Steve Wall and Amanda Watson, who won the Club title five times over the next six years, only to be displaced by the young rising star in Brett Morrison.

All those theories count for nothing in the current season. Brett Morrison opened the door a little bit when work commitments forced him to miss a couple of consistency events. Troy Dalglish and Dee Kelly have been in sparkling form on Dalusional. Steve Wall also missed a race or two but remains as consistent as ever, while Guy Skinner and Richard Evans still manage some amazing performances in the tiny Thanet, despite the fact that their top speed is only eight knots. Thrown into the mix with some outstanding mid-season runs is the catamaran Purrfect. John and Lynne Cooper seem to have picked up a notch or two to feature in least points lost awards.

And so the scene is set for a really tight battle for this year’s Club championship, and since South of Perth competitors traditionally fare well in State championship events, the same group should feature in those events too, despite spirited competition from Chas Milner’s Sansterre (Claremont Yacht Club) and Ray and Gary Smith’s open banana boat Noah Genda from Royal Perth Yacht Club. The latter team has appreciated our acceptance of them in our club events, where they participate in order to improve their skills, but play no part in the result.

Opening Day attracted thirty power boats to time trial and some hilarious entries in the “dress up your boat” competition, where Kris and a heavily pregnant Amy Townend worked the forthcoming birth of their fifth baby by wearing oversize nappies and dummies. Very funny!

The usual suspects headed the points score. Dalusional topped with 6 points followed by Sunhunter on 7 and Amazon on 8. Mark Hayman’s Innuendo and Anton Jennings’ new boat Magnifique Too also scored 8 points. ...continued on page 22

Amazon and Sunhunter shared least points in the Sherwell Family trophy on the 12th May, ensuring that last season’s rivalry was right back on track, but the following week in the Linfox Australia Time Trial, Thanet and Dalusional topped the least points lost with Michael and Maria Cook’s M&M’s a couple of points further back.

The first State Championship Heat on 26th May was a burster. With Garry Morrison on holidays in Scotland, it was left to Brian Smith to take on the role of Regatta Control Officer. With a cool and calm review of the weather forecast and an eye out of the window to see what was REALLY happening outside, he allowed the event to proceed. Many of our members opted

out, but the nine who did brave the elements performed very well and the Club still took out the Teams Prize on the day. Dalusional won the heat with least points lost, Purrfect was next and Royal Perth’s Noah Genda showed the benefit of their practice in our events with a well earned third place. The Smith boys were drenched!

Commodore Phil Warwick and navigator Pam scored least points in the Robert E Blanckensee Memorial event in the absence of both Sunhunter and Amazon but Guy Skinner and Richard Evans claimed the Cliff Spence Memorial Trophy with five points lost, a great lead-in to State Heat 2. Run in beautiful conditions, the heat was possibly a wake-up call

to South of Perth, which had only one boat in the top three. Claremont Yacht Club’s Sansterre top scored with the loss of three points, followed by Purrfect and Royal Freshwater Bay’s Queste, skippered by Hamish Beck on a countback. Fourth place on the same points as Queste, were Sunhunter, Time Out and Thanet.

Sunhunter was back on least points in the Cliff Spence Memorial just a point clear of Thanet, Amazon and M&M’s.

The Club’s handicap system produced the sort of results we all hoped for – the handicap winners have been rewarded for excellent performance on the day but at the same time the handicap trophies have been well spread. ...continued on page 24

CRUISING SECTION WINING AND DINING!

W

e have had a relaxing few months after our busy autumn season which included Cruising Butterflies and some overnighters.

Recently the cruising section enjoyed wining and dining at Royal Freshwater Bay. We have some exiting events coming up for winter including a cruise to Rottnest in July and a lunch at Fremantle Sailing club in August.

A good club is about the sum of its parts and we really want to be inclusive of all who have a love of being out on the water or enjoying lunching by the water.

Thank you again to our excellent Cruising Section Committee for all their hard work and time volunteered to organise our events. It is always good to be able to go to other clubs and enjoy their hospitality. This is what the Cruising Section is all about, getting together to enjoy our boats and a wonderful time together at different venues.

It is especially rewarding when members who do not have boats come and join in our activities.

Wednesday Winter Sailing

H28 sailing on Wednesdays has again had five or six boats sailing most weeks, with Carina and Koomela joining the fleet whenever possible.

In early July Wynella, Mariner and Swiftsure Saga are separated by seven points in the Consistency Series with

all three boats in strong contention for the title. The winter series has been highlighted by a distinct lack of wind with three races in June being “abandoned”, however I am sure the Wind Gods will return.

Frostbites

Although part of “C” fleet, Koomela, Napea of Carrack, Karoleeya and Swiftsure Saga were amongst the regular participants in the winter Frostbite series. Due to the very light winds experienced in the early part of the season, the SS22’s and others have been dominant, however Koomela is in second place in the consistency series.

Ian Weaver has taken the opportunity to update the Loyal Weaver Trophy as it only has a limited space available for future winners. Ian will skilfully attempt to realign past winner labels to create much needed space.

Thanks must also go to John Wright, who has diligently maintained and improved the Trophy over the last decade. May John and Ian continue in their efforts to keep the Loyal Weaver Trophy in prime condition, sitting over the fireplace to recognise H28 Champion winners.

The current consistency trophy will be awarded for one series and Ian’s new trophy the other. The current handicap system, TopYacht has the capability to allow for pre and post-Christmas events.

SAILING ACADEMY LEARN TO SAIL COURSES FOR JUNIORS 7-12 YRS TACKERS Tackers is a great sailing program for kids aged 7 to 12yrs and under 55kg. It’s fun, safe, and doesn’t require any previous sailing experience.

All of the equipment including the boats, sails and life jackets are provided. All courses are run

by Australian Sailing accredited coaches.

Opposite is an illustration of the Optimist Learn to Sail Pathway. This gives you the information up to the Optimist Green Fleet level. The Tackers courses and Green Fleet use the club owned plastic Tackers Optimists. As sailors transition to the Intermediate Fleet they start sailing the fibreglass racing Optimists and compete in club racing.

Tackers 1 – Having Fun Course Fee: $280 It’s a great way to make new friends and learn how to sail. Kids will be taught how to rig the boat, launch and sail back to the beach, basic manoeuvres, sailing in a straight line and the skills of capsizing.

It starts with the fundamental knowledge of how to sail for complete beginners and progresses through the levels, teaching more advanced skills and techniques. The program will teach you the skills and give you the experience to be able to sail in the club racing and/or enjoy being out on the water without the need of an instructor.

Level 1 – Start Sailing Course Fee: $300 Here you are introduced to the fun of catamaran sailing in a safe and supportive environment. You will learn how to rig and de-rig the boat, launch and sail back to the beach. The skills of capsizing, how to sail in a straight line and how to rack and gybe the boat to turn it around.

Course Dates: Run over 5 Sundays from 1230 - 1630hrs • 4, 11, 18, 25 August and 1 September, 2018

Level 2 – Better Sailing Course Fee: $180 Here you will continue to develop your skills and learn how to sail a boat upwind and downwind. There is a focus on improving your boat handling techniques and team work.

Course Dates: Run over 5 Saturdays from 1300 - 1700hrs • 14, 21, 28 July and 4, 11 August Hobie Wave Green Fleet The Hobie Wave Green Fleet is a twice a week club training program following on from the Better Sailing or Start Racing Course. The consistent weekly training is designed to up-skill teenagers and adults to a level where they can compete in club racing or take a dinghy out sailing without the supervision of an instructor.

Training is carried out in the club owned Hobie Waves.

Training is run on a Friday afternoon from 1600 1830hrs and Sunday morning 1300 - 1600 Sailors generally train in the Green Fleet for one to two seasons. On the completion of the Green Fleet you can lease a club-owned Hobie Wave to compete in club racing. Or join one of the existing club fleets by sailing with another club member or buying your own boat and continuing your club training and racing in that class. The Hobie 16 class is recommended.

KEELBOAT Start Crewing and Helming Course Fee: $350 Keelboats allow you to learn to sail without fear of capsizing, with 4 to 5 other people on the boat.

Learning to sail in self-righting keelboats provides a learning platform that is stable yet responsive. As your skills progress, you will also develop an understanding of each person’s role and how teamwork plays a major part in being an effective crew. You will come away with the knowledge and confidence to sail a small boat competently and for those that wish, you can progress to larger boats or participate as crew on a racing boat.

The courses are run on the BW8 yachts.

DIVISION 3

T

he Regatta Season of 2017/18 concluded with those participating enjoying the season and looking forward to 2018/19.

Some eleven yachts participated throughout the season, although numbers were generally around 6 or 7 boats for most races.

Competition was tight and the courses found to be interesting and challenging. Even though the numbers may have been down at times, many good tussles were had between boats on the water, which kept everyone on their mettle and made for satisfying racing.

One of the boats that performed well throughout the season was San Michele, skippered by Robert Schmitz. Even though San Michele didn’t pick up any of the major awards throughout the season, she featured in the top three for all bar the Consistency series. It would seem that having Sophie on board may have made the difference Rob? Toward the end of the season there was a change in ownership of Bluegrass. Craig Gee has purchased Bluegrass from Mark Graham, although Mark is continuing to sail as crew on the boat. So, others beware. Bluegrass is shaping up to be a really competitive boat for the forthcoming season.

Divisional AGM The Division held its AGM on Saturday 3rd June 2018. The previous year’s office bearers will retain their positions: Laurence Hansen – Chair Peter Clarke – Deputy Chair Chris Lewis-Driver – Secretary Bevan Cole - Handicapper Des Lewis – Scribe.

Much of the discussion centred on crew and participation within the division. This is something that is being looked at across the club and the division is engaged in this through Laurence as Sailing Captain and Des who is on the Membership Committee.

OCEAN RACING REPORT Golden Geraldton

0 years, the half-ton, the Semicentennial or Quinquagenary, either way you say it, the 2018 Geraldton Ocean Classic and Return Race is sure to be one to remember. Entries are open, boats are ready for crews and we have crews that are ready and looking for boats.

This year sees the 50th iteration of this iconic event that has run in every single offshore season since it first started, a statistic unmatched by any other WA club. With all the challenges this event has faced this past year, we are pleased to say, look out Geraldton here we come!

The 2018-19 Offshore season is fast approaching with the recent Prize Night held at RPYC on the 16th June 2018. Hosting guest speaker President of Australian Sailing, Australian Sailing Committee and Winner of the 2017 Rolex Sydney to Hobart, Mr Matt Allen answering some direct questions about boats, crews and performance. The night however, was about the trophies with Craig Carter’s ‘Indian’ taking out the Siska Trophy for 2018 which relegated Alan Stein’s ‘Dirty Deeds’ to be bridesmaids for the fourth year running. The crew took the honour with style and class by arriving in some ill-fitting, brightly coloured dresses in the bridesmaid’s tradition.

The new season opens with the George Law Foundation Race on September 15th and then the schedule gets very crowded. All feedback received by the club through surveys and anecdotal comments is; that the season is too busy and the constant struggle to find crew would only be hampered more by another full schedule. It is also unfortunate that ORWA chose to schedule two races on the weekends either side of the Geraldton Ocean Classic, just to make it interesting. One thing is for sure the true blue ocean racers will be there at the start line (and hopefully at the finish line!)

The 50th Geraldton and return Ocean Race is a true Cat 2 race and as a result, is now officially a pre-qualifier for the Sydney Hobart Race – giving it a true and definite “Blue Water” status.

Saturday the 20th October off North

Mole our intrepid Offshore Race Team will set us off on the 221 nautical-mile race up the west coast. Typically two days of scenery, where the sea and the waves have shaped the canvas for the wind to paint the landscape. Holding the rum-line course from Jurien Bay to Geraldton becomes the battle as the coastline dips away into the late night and comes back out to meet you the following morning.

The race and rally up is only a third of the fun. Then the GYC Lobster Pot series kicks into full gear after a day off to repair both boat and crew.

Three days of typically JAM racing with the local boats around Champion Bay followed by afternoon activities onshore. GYC always put on a lovely evening of presentations, food and company as the sailors enjoy their last night in windy Geraldton.

Before too long though, it is time to pack the boats, load the sails, crews and provisions for the return trip the following weekend. The last few years have seen an unnatural return with excellent following conditions and winds; will the commentators curse get us this year?

The SoPYC website has the entrants form and all the information required to get you out of the pen and involved in this once in a century race. Wednesday the 1st August, we are holding an Information Evening were all aspects of the race, it's preparation and your involvement will be discussed. Your friendly and helpful club National Equipment Auditors will also be on hand to answer questions.

SPACESAILER 22 Member Profile: Tony Rikkers A Life on the Move Paperboy, dental technician, pilot, flying instructor, English teacher, truck driver, photographer, rally driver, sailor.

No, not a list of career options, just a few of the entries on Tony Rikkers’ CV. Tony has been the proud owner of SS22 Tanderra approaching four years. And that came about in typical Rikkers style.

“I had ordered some fold-up bicycles to stow in the back of the plane so that when we flew to Rottnest we would have our bikes ready to go.

“When they arrived from China I thought we (wife Lara and son Josh) should give them a try. So we set off riding around the river from our home in Como and came to the South of Perth Yacht Club.

“I had never been there though I had sailed at Royal Freshwater Bay. We went in, had a drink and I thought this was a nice friendly place and started to look around.

“We walked out on jetty 7 and I saw the SS22s. I liked the look of them and thought they might be a good yacht to teach a then 13 year old Josh how to sail.”

Tony went for a sail with David Maynier on Oohbudah Bird, liked it and started looking for a yacht to buy.

He had been told that Tanderra was a good boat but it wasn’t for sale.

“I made Ray Major an offer and he agreed to sell. I started sailing Saturdays but could not sail regularly being often away with work. This season I’ve been able to race regularly on Saturdays.”

Tanderra finished 4th in the 2017/18 State Championships, not far behind Crossroads (Peter Lewis) winning for the 5th time, Wildfire (Bruce Uren) and Banshee (Brian Mongan).

“It’s surprising what a difference sailing regularly makes,” he admitted.

Tony grew up at Wandana flats in Subiaco, Kings Park was his backyard.

“When I was eight I got a paper round and from then on I’ve pretty well always had a job. By the time I was 11 I was supplying drugs – Caddy’s Pharmacy in Hay Street, Subiaco gave me a job delivering medication to people who were unable to come to the shop. These days I understand you

have to be 14 before you can get a job!”

Tony’s first fulltime job was as a manager for Camera World – sparked by his interest in photography.

However, it wasn’t long before he was looking for a career change. He studied dental technology at TAFE then spent 14 years working as a dental technician at the Perth Dental Hospital making crowns, dentures and bridges, still working part time and holidays for Camera World to earn some extra cash to help pay for his new passion – motor sports.

He took up rallying in his Mazda RX2, later circuit racing at Wanneroo in a Mazda RX3 and hung up his gloves after competing in the first Rally Australia event in WA in 1988.

He next set up his own dental lab at home and went back to studying, completing an Aviation/Computer Science Degree at Edith Cowan University in 1994.

Flying took over from rallying and he got his pilot’s licence in four months. By 1996 he was a flying instructor, later teaching aerobatics.

His wife Lara, a language teacher, suggested working in Japan, so they packed up and went to live in Kobe for three years, both teaching English.

Back home in Perth Tony returned to flying, teaching and flying charter for next 8 years, then worked as a pilot for the Royal Flying Doctor Service for two years. “I never had a bad day with the RFDS. It was a very satisfying job and I was sorry to leave but it was hard on my family working weekends.”

He joined a corporate jet management company becoming a check and training pilot – a job that found him flying “interesting” clients at times including royalty and rock stars (Mick Jagger amongst them) around the globe. He lists Ulaanbataar in Mongolia as one of his more interesting flight destinations!

Tony now runs his own business, Thunderbird Aero Service at Jandakot with a fleet of seven aircraft offering flying lessons, charter services and joy flights.

But you get the feeling that there are more chapters to be written in the Tony Rikkers’ story.

LASER REPORT Gaza’s and Ping-Pong a hit at Centreboard Prize Night The event unfolded exactly as described to the Laser Fleet by Centreboard Captain Kate Jones. Short on formality, with brief entertaining speeches at intervals, and long on socializing encouraged by the cocktail party atmosphere.

When not otherwise occupied collecting their bounty, the Laser fleet generally found their way to the adjacent big-top marquee to enjoy the view, night air and attractions on offer.

The Juniors monopolized the new and wildly popular ping-pong table all evening. Just a suggestion: add a second table or at least an X-box or selfie stick or whatever to distract them so mature aged sailors can have a paddle.

Anyway, the Masters preferred Gaza’s, a pop-up bistro presided over by none other than the Laser Fleet Captain himself. One regular in particular seen holding up the bar on the left was there when the event started and still hadn’t moved when we all left.

A great innovation introduced this year was the use of framed sailing action photos as prizes. Pictured are some of the happy recipients. And here the entire Laser Fleet in attendance display their awards on the bar at Gaza’s. No, the glow just left of centre is not the halo surrounding this year’s Standards Club Champion, just the flash reflection.

Laser Standard 2018 Granny Tack Championship Results Dateline Sunday 22 April and BoM gets it wrong. The forecast was for 15kt and the reality was to prove close to twice that. Obviously the skeleton staff at BoM confused kt with NOT in their forecast. Yet again. Funding cuts for ABC, SBS, public sector services and health care are one thing, but it’s going too far when BoM’s forecast accuracy is affected.

It was a dark and stormy afternoon.

Dave and Richo had see-sawed for the lead all season and the Standard Championship was a dead heat going into the 7th and final Club Championship race. Starting the week prior, the usual psychological warfare played out via Messenger exchanges.

Richo texting disappointment at his Broome work schedule preventing his attendance, and Dave replying with feigned commiseration, wishing that he too could be in Broome on account of the miserable cold local conditions, and coyly speculating on whether he’d even bother to show on the day. Unfortunately Richo’s devious plan fell through for a last minute massive psych-out appearance on the start line, by being rigged and out on the water undetected before Dave’s arrival at the Club. News of Richo’s unexpected presence had spread through the knitting-circle otherwise known as the Dave Club faster than a lightning bolt on a carbon top section.

That left the race itself as the decider, and even that came down to the bitter end. On the final downwind leg the fleet was raked by the passage of a vicious squall line. This was marked by a sudden ominous lull in the afternoon’s half-gale, during which a violent cloud burst pounded the water surface, raising a whitish mist that brought visibility down to a few meters. Immediately following was a gust that made Wreck of the Hesperus look like a Wednesday Twilighter.

The eventual Standard Championship winner Dave Whait described the scene. “I saw turtled hulls on all sides and had only seconds

to make a decision. I knew that even with half the Flying 15 fleet broaching at the start line and Nick going for a swim and a 125 torpedoing Coffee Pointer, there was still a risk I might get handed the Port at the Awards. But then I saw Richo fly past the leeward mark and halfway to the club house still on starboard with the boom pointed straight at the Southern Cross and leech curling over, and I made the call. I figured with the poor visibility and number of skippers in the water the move would go undetected. I granny tacked, rounded the mark and headed for the finish line in first place and as the 2018 Standard Club Champion”.

Later, a relaxed Dave admitted he includes granny tacks in his regular weekday practice regimen, but only well offshore at Fremantle to avoid scrutiny. Dave’s gamble paid off at the Awards, too. The Port went to Nick instead for his EVA (extravessel activity).

Solo Series Race One The anticipated winter conditions of mild sunshine, flat water and sparkling breezes failed to eventuate 10 June with the familiar pattern of the Summer continuing into the offseason. For once, BoM got it right and the race was judiciously cancelled with 33kt gusts recorded at 1:00pm.

Laser 4.7 Youth World Championships in Gdynia, Poland. July 9th - 17th 2018

outh of Perth Yacht Club youth sailor and program of merit scholar, Michael Compton (aged 15) has placed second overall at the 2018 International Laser Class Association's Laser 4.7 Youth World Championships and won the Under 16's World Championship!

Michael's commitment to sailing and hard training for several years shows what you can achieve with the right focus and determination.

Congratulations to Michael and also congratulations to his biggest sponsors, his family, and to all the coaches that helped with his preparation.

Let's also congratulate our other South of Perth competitor Stefan ElliottShirecore who came 25th overall and 6th in the Under 16's.

OPTIMIST REPORT Hillarys Easter Regatta

E

aster is always a fun time of the year and with this year’s 5-day long weekends; the celebration was bigger and better. For those sailors who did not have anything to do, in Hillarys Yacht Club, there was a ranking regatta to participate. The regatta took place over three days, the first day being a training day in preparation for the weekend regatta ahead. The training day was lowly participated and mainly consisted of Hillarys Yacht Club sailors. For the regatta, there was a total of nine sailors who participated in the Optimist Open fleet hence the intensity was very low. However, the racing was still very interesting. On the first day, Toby dominated in the heavy winds and got a hattrick. Sadly, the wind got too strong, calling for an early half day. The next day, some light and shifty winds blew in from the south adding an interesting twist to the racing. However, this did not affect Toby and he finished first with a picket fence result. Aaron got a lucky second due to Mia’s two unfortunate OCSs. To conclude, the regatta was a fun way to win some prizes and stuff yourself with Easter eggs and lollies.

Winter Update As the weather cools and the season gets wet we are seeing a major decrease of sailor participants in the winter regattas. It seems as though the Optimist sailors are … well, hibernating. Some sailors are also escaping to the north for some

warmer weather. An example of this is the Rafarts going on a 3-week holiday to Spain to visit relatives and mysteriously timing it to miss the most of their exams; rousing some suspicion… Another example of this is Olivia Payne joining some other sailors on a trip to Singapore for the Singapore National Championships.

However, the heat blast might have been too much for them, not to mention the dehydration, humidity, zero wind, super strong currents and wondering how on Earth are those sailors on the other side of the course moving?

Back to some of South of Perth’s matters, the Oppi fleet is growing smaller with some Gold Fleet moving out onto bigger boats. Remaining is just Aaron Teo, The Rafarts, and Olivia Payne and with three of them escaping the winter, there was only one person to attend the Solo Series.

In the Silver Fleet, only Murray Duthie and Noah Karantonis are frequently coming to the club to sail. In the “Golver” fleet, Benjamin Pearson is

strangely switching between Gold and Silver depending on his mood on the day. Green fleet numbers have also disappeared rapidly from being ten at the start of the year to only one or two frequent sailors.

The weather has not been too nice either with a total of four winter series races cancelled in three different clubs due to either super strong winds or no wind. The remaining races are difficult conditions with some shifty and gusty winds.

On the plus side, South of Perth has finally gotten a new table-tennis table and when the wind goes, the sailors are back inside the club practising their long lost table-tennis skills. However, it might not last long as a new table-tennis terrorist is out to strike on a record streak of over twenty abducted and murdered balls, three stripped bats and several scars on the table. Rumour says that there may be more than one culprit. More is to be heard about shortly.

PELICANS REPORT

raining and racing has continued for the pelicans during winter as they have taken part in this year’s solo series and have trained most Sunday afternoons.

The pelican fleet has accumulated an abundance of new sailors for the winter season. It has been great to see Seaking on the water after being passed on to its new skipper, Calyn Reid.

We would like to welcome to our South of Perth pelican fleet, four new sailors who have been training with us and crewing in winter racing. Lucas, James, Finn and Leuca have all been training hard to prepare for the pelican fleet’s upcoming regattas and races including the 2018 solo series and the Applecross Cup. As we have recently had the Centerboard Prize Night we would like to congratulate our South of Perth boats for their following achievements.

They competed extremely well, having a close competition with winds being perfect for them. The spinnakers were always up for great downwind speed and the skippers having great starts. Skippers and crews were all putting the things we have practiced on Sundays into their races. There has been huge competition within the fleet to see which crew can do the fastest gybe on the beach.
