COMMODORE’S REPORT Phil Warwick Commodore

I

hope that everybody including our many members, volunteers and staff enjoyed a well-earned break over the festive season and their batteries are fully charged ready for what will be another eventful and fun packed 2019 boating season.

I am sure everyone is looking forward to getting back on the water to work off some of the Christmas cheer and catch up on their weekly on-water competitive activities.

2021 Australian Youth Championships

The end of 2018 finished with the great news from Australian Sailing that SoPYC has been awarded the 2021 Australian Youth Championships. Royal Perth Yacht Club is partnering with us in the event. This is a significant undertaking and I would like to thank them for their willingness to work with us. This very prestigious event brings together the very best Youth Sailors from around Australia.

I must congratulate the team who were involved in the preparation and submission of the proposal. The document was a standout and a credit to everybody who put it together. This is another opportunity to showcase our State and demonstrate how professionally SoPYC are able to run high profile events. (Roll on 2021).

Tessa Parkinson

By the time you read this report you will probably be aware that Tessa Parkinson has been offered a significant role by Australian Sailing as National Coach of the 49er FX class. This role is a once in a lifetime opportunity that will put Tessa in an enviable position to be a part of producing our next generation of Olympic Champions. As a gold medalist Olympian, Tessa has first-hand knowledge of the time, effort and commitment required to compete and succeed on both the World and Olympic stages. I would like congratulate Tessa and wish her every success in her new role. We look forward to having her return at some time in the future to share her experiences with her many SoPYC friends and colleagues. (Good Luck, we will miss you.)

Cruising Butterflies

Consultative Meetings

After holding member consultative meetings in 2018, and with many hours of brain teasing work, we now have a draft of the proposed new Constitution Document for final review and adoption by the membership at a special meeting, in the first part of this year.

A revision of the Associations Incorporation Act 2015 requires an update to the Club’s Constitution. The amendments that are proposed will allow updates to be made without losing the essence of the original Constitution document, which has served the Club well for many years, and comply with the requirements of the amended Act. We also held Infrastructure consultative meetings, inviting a cross section of members and staff, to provide feedback on current and future infrastructure. This feedback will assist in determining future needs for additional member activities the Club could explore going forward.

I would like to thank the members who provided their time and valuable input at the numerous consultative meetings. This information enables us to capture members’ thoughts and ideas for incorporation into our new modernised version of our Constitution and future infrastructure planning.

I would especially like to thank Elspeth Hensler and David Luketina for their valuable time and effort to champion and facilitate these processes. They were huge undertakings, with many hours of painstaking work required to put the documents together.

HOUSE REPORT John Midolo

T

he last few months have flown past so quickly it seems only like yesterday I was talking about Power Boat Closing Day and the Melbourne Cup - both these events have now come and gone!

Speaking of the Melbourne Cup, those members who attended the event would have enjoyed a great day with the fantastic weather, food and music, and if your horse was in the first 3 places that would have put the icing on the cake.

The Functions Committee have noted a few things that would improve the day for next year, but all in all a very successful day. Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen.

We introduced the “C U at Sunset” again which was well attended but a little cold. From the feedback I have, an excellent night. With the warmer months ahead we will look at scheduling another one soon.

The functions keep on going with the annual “Boating on the Swan” for the Ladies Christmas Luncheon. This saw seven vessels on the water, and from the condition the Vice Commodore’s wife was in, this was another great day. A special thank you to Chris Nyeholt, our Ladies Luncheon Coordinator and all the power boat owners for arranging and donating their time and boats for this event.

The festive season is probably the busiest time of the year for the Club and is an important revenue stream and I thank you, the members, for your patience during this period.

The menus were well received over the month leading up to Christmas, with the Christmas lunch menu receiving positive feedback, so thank you again to all involved.

I had the pleasure of being invited to the “Cruising Sections Christmas party” which was held on the timber boat “MV Saratoga”. This event was BYO drinks and a plate to share. With a three piece band playing on the aft deck, the fantastic weather and the company of the cruising section, what a great night. It shows you with a little effort, any of the Clubs’ sections can meet socially and enjoy an evening with their partners.

The annual Children’s Christmas Party was held and well attended. I was involved in the start team for the Viper States in the morning and the FF15 Club Championship that afternoon, so unfortunately I couldn’t attend the event. The Commodore attended and said the kids were having fun and the event was successful once again. He even hijacked Father Christmas to assist in the Viper presentations.

Thanks once again to the functions committee for their planning and enthusiasm.

As most of you would be aware, the “Big Bash” New Year’s party, which closed the Club to members, was cancelled quite late in the piece leaving a large hole in the Club’s budget. On the bright side this gave us an opening for the members to enjoy a “New Year Eve” party at their Club and they did. The problem we had was all the usual party hire for New Year’s Eve had already been booked and if it wasn’t for the fast action of Fiona Whife and I think inside

information, we would not have had the fantastic band on the night. From the comments I have heard the night was well received. I guess looking back this was a good example of the KISS principal!

My last article spoke about the Quarter Deck refurbishment; so far we have cleaned the brick paving.

Unfortunately, after the annual corrosion inspection of the main jetty, the steel in the “splash zone” (top section) of the wave attenuators has been found to be in poor shape.

Their condition has been inspected by the Works Chairman and quotes to replace the steel obtained so the attenuators can continue to protect the marina from the north westerlies in the winter. The costs estimated for repairs are staggering. Further research on repair options is going on. Our treasurer has frozen all improvements until we have a workable budget in place to deal with this issue.

Consequently, the Quarter Deck refurbishment and other projects are on hold for the moment.

I have managed to have the timber floor around the bar repaired in the Wardroom before the treasurer clipped our wings. There are still minor repairs and maintenance to be carried out and these works will commence as soon as finances are available.

We have a few new staff members on the F&B side, Justin has resigned and we are recruiting a replacement.

The other not so new staff member is Balazs. He has been employed to assist Fiona and look after members. I’m yet to see this happen but with the silly season over I will be working closely to have this put in place, so when you see him, please say hello and make him feel welcome.

The pricing debate was taken up at Finance and the resolution was taken to Management. The outcome was to reprint the food and bar menus with members and nonmembers pricing. This will stop some of the confusion. I know you will say we have just got used to it, but I think this will be a better outcome all round. The introduction will be a little longer as we intend to run the system to iron out any bugs before going live.

O

n behalf of Rear Commodore Carl and myself I hope you all had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.

2019 is upon us and there are many great things in the wings or sails as the case may be.

At the time of writing this article, many of our young sailors are in Hobart for the Australian Youth Championships (AYC) Regatta and the Flying Fifteens are in Adelaide for the Nationals and we wish them all well.

Speaking of the AYC it is my pleasure to share that after months of great work by our On-Water Group and associated committees that SoPYC has secured the 2021 AYC Regatta.

The Radio-Controlled Dragon Flite 95's yachts are now a fleet in our club and we are delighted to welcome them to the Centreboard Committee. This group can be seen on Friday afternoons out on the Western Hardstand. What a great way to go sailing, no pen fees, no anti-foul, no trailer, I can only see one problem though…with growing numbers and skippers standing shoulder to shoulder, I’m hoping that when someone calls starboard sailing etiquette ensues.

The Inter-club Championships are coming up in April.

Please contact the OWG or your section Rep if you want to get out there and represent SoPYC in this event. It will be a great few days and we need everyone.

Women’s team Open Veteran Youth

Let’s show the other clubs how good we are.

The Little Wheel Regatta is on from the 15th to the 17th February – which is not far away by the time you read this.

So, get your teams together.

That same weekend is also the Billy Run. This year the

event travels to TCYC not Rottnest like previous years, don’t forget it’s not just a yacht race, there is a cruising part for sail and power to make a complete weekend of it.

The Applecross Cup and the Solo Series have also been held.

Well done to everyone who competed and to the winners.

A big thank you must go out to our start crews both on the boat or in the box, whether it’s for Sailing or Time Trialling.

Without them we don’t get to go out and enjoy our sport.

On the last sailing day of 2018, I had the pleasure of taking the OTB parents onto the water to get a closer look at the kids sailing. It was a shocker of a day but the kids kept going and we were on course to give them support and spur them on. I would like to thank the kids for my glass of Fire Engine each week. It’s good to have a drink with you and see how you all went.

Carl and myself had the privilege of being at the Prize Night for the 50th Geraldton Ocean Race. What a dedicated bunch of ocean racers. Having sat at Rotto myself on the radio boat for a few of those years it was good to catch up with the stalwarts of the race, and I can only hope the event keeps getting bigger.

I really enjoyed listening to both Chris’s Hind and Higham speak on the night. Their passion and enthusiasm for the race made me want to jump on a yacht next year and join in myself.

If you are at the Club Friday 15th March, keep an eye out as the Grand Sponsors will be out there vying for the Grand Sponsors Cup. The crews will consist of 1 junior skipper and a crew of Grand Sponsor members which should make for a great afternoon.

To finish off don’t forget Saturday 27th April is the Commodores Cup. Get out there and get those numbers up...hey we might even be able to get Commodore Phil to ring the bell.

Staff Changes

S

ince the last issue, a number of staff changes have taken place.

Tessa Parkinson, our head coach has accepted a position with Australian Sailing as the National 49’er FX Coach.

This is a wonderful opportunity for Tessa and I wish her well in the role. Erica Warren joined us in the first week of January 2019 as Finance & Administration Manager. On the food and beverage front, Balazs Terbe has joined us as Operations Manager, with the primary responsibility of attending the members and supervising the duty managers and food and beverage staff. I would like to wish Justin Kimberly well in his new ventures having left us in January.

Updated Associations Incorporation Act 2015

As mentioned earlier, the consultation sessions have been finalised and the feedback is in the care of the Management Committee. In the next few months, the committee will call a Special General Meeting of members to adopt the updated Rules so we can meet our compliance obligations under the Act.

Environmental Matters and Contractors

During the Christmas and New Year period many members were working on their vessels and it is timely to remind members of the Club’s environmental rules and obligations under the Riverbed Lease. The Club has a Riverbed Lease which imposes strict environmental obligations on the activities we undertake for vessels in pens, on the land and the operation of the hardstand. The Club has a world’s best practice environmental system in place and it is this system that enabled the approval for the land reclamation which led to the hardstand facilities that members enjoy. These obligations are audited by the landlord from time-to-time and SoPYC is obliged to report environmental incidents to Department of Transport and the landlord for such incidents as spills and fuel in the water. To minimise fuel incidents it is strongly recommended that all vessels have oil socks in their bilges.

There have been members and contractors whose activities are counter to our environmental policies and practices and when these instances occur, I address the issues with the boat owners. The Club has a Preferred Boat Maintenance Procedures Manual on the Members Portal which outlines what is required of members (and contractors) working on vessels. If you cannot access the portal staff can assist you. Alternatively, the manual can be collected from the office or emailed to any member that needs a copy.

All contractors working on vessels within the Club must be licenced and we are notifying contractors when they are on site. The Licence requirements have been in place since 2007 and with the hardstand facilities we now have there has been a significant increase in the number of contractors working on members vessels. Without a Licence, contractors will not be permitted to complete the jobs they have started until they have a licence. The list of licenced contractors is available on the web site.

“Mates” working on vessels raises another issue as the odds are that they do not have the appropriate marine insurances in place. Should there be an incident and they are not insured, the boat owner will be the next stop for recovery and restitution claims from the Club and the boat owners who may have had their property damaged. The question then rests on whether your boat insurance policy covers such an incident? Specialist jobs, which may need to be done by companies not generally connected with marine maintenance are also required to provide proof of insurance, JSA’s and a description of how the job will be performed. The contractor’s insurance must state that the cover they have includes work on marine vessels and that the cover is adequate for the task, location of the vessel and size of vessel. The company may need to get a statement from their insurer to verify that the cover is appropriate for the task they are performing.

The office staff and bosuns are always happy to assist Members with any questions they may have in regard to the Environmental Management System which dictates how the Club manages its environmental obligations under the Riverbed Lease.

April Half Yearly Meeting

April 2019 sees Easter (19th April – 22nd April) and ANZAC Day (25th April) fall within the WA school holidays (13th to 28th April inclusive), with the break of two days between Easter and ANZAC Day. We are predicting that many members will take the opportunity to have a longer than usual “Easter”. The Club Rules require that the Half Yearly Meeting, where Members adopt the fees for the coming financial year, must be conducted no later than 30th April. To accommodate the opportunity the school holidays, Easter, and ANZAC Day presents families, the Management Committee has resolved that the Half Yearly Meeting date will be Wednesday 17th April, 2019.

Boat Ramp

It is important that all boat ramp users adhere to the Club rules when recovering their vessels from the water and putting them back on trailers. Unfortunately, in recent weeks a number of members have been seen, and spoken to about, “driving” their vessel on to trailers when retrieving vessels from the water. Driving vessels on to trailers on the boat ramp is strictly prohibited. The damage that the thrust of motors propellers under water does to the ramp leads to undermining the ramp and leading to expensive repair bills.

There is also the safety issue for the boat operators and people in the close vicinity of the vessel itself.

Half Yearly General Meeting To be held in the Senior Clubhouse South of Perth Yacht Club

Wednesday 17 April 2019 at 7:00pm

This meeting is to determine the entrance fees, subscriptions, water, land, mooring and centreboard rack fees; ramp, crane and travel lift fees for the year 2019/2020.

The Management Committee motion recommending Subscriptions and Fees for 2019/2020 will be posted to members on or about 20 March 2019.

All members are entitled to attend this meeting however, only financial Ordinary, Centreboard, Honorary Life, 60 Year Honorary and Country members shall be entitled to vote at this meeting.

DIVISION 2 SMOKE ON THE WATER... and the racing was HOT!

W

elcome to Division 2, 2019.

We hope you all had a terrific holiday and festive season.

Saturday 17th of November 2018 the competition in Division two was HOT! Embellished on the water by a very smoky background due to burn offs on previous days by DFES, it added extra atmosphere for the battle for line honors between IGAWA, Ballina, Mingara and Colusion which was terrific, all boats and their skippers strutting their skills.

As Natalouka wasn't quite ready for competition, I enjoyed following the fleet around, seeing what they did well and what they did not do smoothly and taking some photos of the action.

In the photos top right we see Mingara and Colusion approaching Como. With the usual boisterous communication or rules abounding between boats, and I recall hearing the words, "this is bullshit" somewhere in the approach. I would opinion and bearing witness, that Colusion had Mark Room, which he called and was duly given. Barry slipped around the mark a boat length in front of Mingara and was then able to hold George off on the reach to the finish line. The margin, a mere 8 seconds.

At the time of writing this, early January, Vince tells me he still does not have a quote from anyone to repair the stick as their mast extrusion is no longer available and that particular tapered design no longer exists.

It's now been over two months and they have said that they are going to plan B soon, so we look forward to seeing them out again in the near future.

It was SNAP, CRACKLE and POP... and we are not talking about Rice Bubbles.

Ballina

It was a blustery day in November, with a very brisk sea breeze which kept everyone on their toes during the race and it was a busy day with lots of boats on the river. We were in the vicinity of Deepwater heading for Brickie for the first leg. HERRESHOFF HILL NEWS Retro Race 2019

A

t time of writing, the Retro Race finishing at SoPYC was about to be run. Unfortunately, due to strong winds on the day the race had to be cancelled.

Although the Retro Race was cancelled, a number of boats and individuals from the Royal Perth Yacht Club and Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club still made the journey to the South of Perth Yacht Club to participate in the after-race function. A number of H28’s, Sacha and Eun Na Mara went for a sail around the Swan to enjoy the experience.

With all boats safely back in their pens and visitors’ boats safely positioned at SoPYC, about 60-80 sailors and friends gathered in the Marquee for food, beverages and reminisce about tall tales and truths about boats and sailors. Many stories were told about former owners and skippers of H28’s in years gone by.

unday 9th December saw our State Championship heat sailed out of East Fremantle Yacht Club.

This was the second time we have included an EFYC race in our calendar and it always proves to be a unique and challenging race. This small but enthusiastic Club always makes us feel very welcome and one of their members, Sam James kindly shot some beautiful photos of the action. We have included a few of his shots here.

EFYC races involve a box start from their short and confined Club line, followed by some challenging negotiations further down river, before heading up into Melville water.

Needless to say, racing in these circumstances demands considerable concentration. Once out on Melville water, things were far less cluttered than on a Saturday afternoon, so the wind gods compensated for this by blowing with gusto.

Well known as the “drain pipe�, the narrow river section presents some strong tidal currents and fickle winds due to lots of back winds and

channeling off the steep river sides and cliff faces. Myriad moored boats plus Sunday afternoon power boat traffic add further spice to the mix.

We are half way through our season and the result sheets are showing a strong fleet and highly competitive racing. Keep up the great work everyone.

he Vipers had their 5th State Championships at SoPYC in December 2018. Rod Beurteaux, Jon Stubbs and Tony Johnson won convincingly. There was an epic struggle for the minor placings with team Monkhouse just edging out Albany sailors Murray Howson and Michael Cameron (both one point behind).

Howson and Cameron were separated on countback adding another chapter to their generational battle for bragging rights.

Looking forward Cameron is guaranteed to beat Howson over the line at the upcoming Palma and Long Beach regattas when they will be sailing on the same boat with Howson steering.

FLYING FIFTEENS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

S

outh of Perth's Flying Fifteen sailors aren't afraid of a bit of travel this year with nine boats making up just over a quarter of the fleet at the National Championships sailed at the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron in January.

Competitors came from every Australian mainland state and territory with Western Australian boat's filling the first four places overall. Nic Jerwood sailed with his daughter Enfys to win the regatta with a race to spare. It was Nic's second Australian Flying Fifteen Championship win in three years.

Other South of Perth Yacht Club members to figure in the results were: • Consistency winners - John Wilson and Brad Sheridan.

PELICANS REPORT 61st Pelican State Titles

T

his year the States were held at East Fremantle Yacht Club. Starting on Sunday 6th January for measuring day and then racing on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday with the final race and presentations on Friday the 11th.

It has been a very hectic few months leading up to the states, with last minute boat preparations and training on Wednesdays and Sundays with our coach Sophie Duthie.

During all of this we have also been training new skippers for next season, James Heggart, Leuca Broderick and Alex Reid all stepping up to start to train as skippers.

The SoPYC team had 4 of our 5 boats competing with Cleopatra sailed by Renee and James, Salacia with Georgette and Alex, Lexington crewed by Hayden and Leuca and Seaking sailed by Calyn and Lucas. Our team competed for the teams’ trophy throughout the week. With the Pelicans being WA’s largest fleet of double handed junior sailors we would have to fight hard and compete well.

The first day of States was when all our boats had to figure out the different waters at East Fremantle. The invitation race in the morning and the first championship heats in the afternoon. The wind was 5-10 knots in the morning proving difficult for our team, as we have become used to the heavy winds this season. The wind picked up in the afternoon helping our skippers and crews get some better results. Congratulations to Lexington who achieved 3rd in consistency for the invitational race in the morning and Salacia and Seaking who got their highest placing race during the afternoon.

Tuesday morning, speaking on behalf of all sailors, was a very testing race, challenging all our patience. The wind ranged from 0-15 knots changing in the matter of minutes several times. There was an E-SE wind direction and a strong tide coming in which was new for many of our skippers. With the help of Sophie and the parents after the race we learnt what to do in the difficult situation. Sailors prayers were answered in the afternoon with the sea breeze coming in with the preferred wind direction of SW and gusts 20+ knots. This created great spinnaker runs and close racing. Well done to Lexington who got their highest placing race in the afternoon.

Wednesday was lay day for the Peli families which was spent doing a range of things from going to Adventure World to squeezing in some more sailing. On Thursday we had two races in the morning and one in the afternoon to allow for the AGM to be held. There are five SoPYC parents on the committee. Congratulations to Scott Keating, Susan Reid, and Nick Heggart who were elected to fill the roles of President, Secretary and Measurer respectively. The morning races consisted of an SW early at around 10 knots gusting to 15 providing some outstanding results. The afternoon had a steady sea breeze of 15 knots, and having a triangle course for the afternoon made for some great reaches. Cleopatra achieved their best result of the regatta with a first place in the second race of the morning and third in consistency for the same race.

The final morning, Friday, was the last race that was very important for all sailors, trying to secure their positions for championships. It was a slow start with the race being postponed by over an hour, but we started with a good sea breeze growing. After the race the sailors came in, had

lunch, and Seaking with Lexington sailed on an easy reach back to SoPYC while Cleopatra and Salacia stayed back and de-rigged to help out with last minute presentation details.

The presentation night was a huge success with over 120 people in attendance to celebrate the Peli sailors’ achievements with four life members present and Margret Shiner hosting. There were a range of trophies and prizes awarded and we are very grateful to the sponsors and PSA for all the great prizes awards we received.

Throughout the night the winners of all the awards were announced building up to presenting the outright Championship Awards. The results were: 1st - Pineapple Monday, Ollie & Zac (GBYC) 2nd - Cleopatra, Renee & James (SoPYC) 3rd - M & M, Taya & Ashleigh (GYC) 7th - Salacia, Georgette & Alex (SoPYC) 11th - Lexington, Hayden & Leuca (SoPYC) 12th - Seaking, Calyn & Lucas (SoPYC) There were also many additional awards besides championships, including Best First Year Skipper, Endeavour Award, Best 12 and Under Skipper, Best Crew Work, the Kevin Rose Spirit Award and many more. SAILING ACADEMY LEARN TO SAIL COURSES FOR JUNIORS 7-12 YRS TACKERS Tackers is a fun introductory sailing program designed for kids aged 7 to 12. Kids don’t need to have any prior sailing experience. The Tackers program focuses on non-competitive learning through games in a supportive environment with structured sessions plans and levels of achievements

Little Tackers – Introduction to Optimists

Course Fee: $140 This a fun introduction to sailing for young children from 4 – 6 yrs. This course covers rigging an Optimist, tying basic knots, games and hands-on sailing in our safe sheltered waters in front of our clubhouse.

No sailing experience is necessary. Participants must be able to swim and be water confident (buoyancy vest supplied).

Optimist Green Fleet

Training is run on a Tuesday afternoon from 1600 – 1830hrs and Sunday morning 0900 – 1200hrs The Optimist Green Fleet is a twice a week Club training program following on from Tackers 2 or 3. The consistent weekly training is designed to up-skill the juniors to a level where they can compete in Club racing. They are trained in the Club owned Tackers Optimists

by Australian Sailing qualified instructors.

Sailors generally train in the Green Fleet for a summer or winter season before moving into the Silver Fleet where they start to Club race in the fibreglass Optimists.

SAILING ACADEMY LEARN TO SAIL COURSES FOR TEENAGERS AND ADULTS DINGHY COURSES Learn to Sail and Race a Hobie Wave This program has been developed to provide a safe introduction to catamaran sailing for teenagers and adults. It starts with the fundamental knowledge of how to sail for complete beginners and progresses through the levels, teaching more advanced skills and techniques. The program will teach you the skills and give you the experience to be able to sail in the Club racing and/or enjoy being out on the water without the need of an instructor.

Level 1 – Start Sailing

Course Fee: $300 Here you are introduced to the fun of catamaran sailing in a safe and supportive environment. You will learn how to rig and de-rig the boat, launch and sail back to the beach. The skills of capsizing, how to sail in a straight line and how to rack and gybe the boat to turn it around.

Course dates: Run over 5 Saturdays from 0830 - 1230hrs • 2, 9, 16 & 23 February 2019. 0830 - 1330hrs

Level 2 – Better Sailing and Racing

Course Fee: $3000 This course is designed to consolidate the experience and knowledge gained in ‘Start Sailing’. Skills and knowledge are introduced that will enable the successful participant to safely and competently sail a dinghy in controlled conditions independently Course Dates: Run over 5 Saturdays from 1230 - 1730hrs • 2, 9, 16 & 23 February 2019. 1230 - 1730hrs

Hobie Wave Green Fleet

The Hobie Wave Green Fleet is a consistent weekly training group designed to up-skill teenagers and adults to a level where they can compete in club racing or take a dinghy out sailing without the supervision of an instructor. To join the group you need to have completed Level 1 (Start Sailing) and 2 (Better Sailing and Start Racing) of the dinghy learn to sail program or already have learnt the fundamental skills of sailing a dinghy Training is run on a Friday afternoon from 1600 1900hrs.

Hobie Wave Club Racing

Hobie Wave Green Fleet sailors are also invited to charter a Club owned Hobie Wave and participate in Dinghy Club Racing at 1:25pm each Sunday throughout the Summer Season. This involves an additional boat charter fee of $40 per month which is incorporated in the Club racing registration fee. To register for Hobie Wave Club racing, go to: www.topyacht.com.au/entreg/ enterpho?e=102.2.321 and select ‘Double Handed Entry’ then ‘Hobie Wave’. If the skipper doesn’t already have a profile in TopYacht, click on the pink section and create a new profile. KEELBOAT Start Crewing and Helming Course Fee: $350 Keelboats allow you to learn to sail without fear of capsizing, with 4 to 5 other people on the boat.

Learning to sail in self-righting keelboats provides a learning platform that is stable yet responsive. As your skills progress, you will also develop an understanding of each person’s role and how teamwork plays a major part in being an effective crew. You will come away with the knowledge and confidence to sail a small boat competently and for those that wish, you can progress to larger boats or participate as crew on a racing boat.

The courses are run on the BW8 yachts.

2019 Optimist National Championships

SoPYC sailors DOING GREAT in a 220 boat fleet at the National Champions!

Congratulations to all sailors that competed in the 2019 Optimist National Championships in Sandy Bay Tasmania.

SoPYC was well represented by Pol and Ona Rafart and Aaron Teo in Open Fleet. Plus Murray Duthie and Olivia Payne in the Intermediate Fleet. Aaron Teo sailed in the top of the fleet and showed great form finishing in 8th place and Ona Rafart 66th in the grueling and hard Optimist Open fleet with over 130 competitors. Pol Rafart was 3rd in the Optimist Open Silver fleet. Olivia Payne was 3rd overall and 1st female in the Intermediate Fleet and Murray Duthie finished 21st with an impressive 6th position in his last race for the regatta. Olivia Payne also took home the 2019 Optimist Regatta Sportsmanship Award.

SoPYC have won the WA Team Racing Championship and have shown amazing form in state regattas and we keep building the Optimist Fleet with up to 18 boats training actively through the week. These kids compete state wide and several have traveled overseas to further their sailing knowledge. The participation and results are a testament to the Head Coach's vision and the Optimist coaches’ dedication.

The overall investment in time and money from sailors representing the club at Nationals are impressive and all participants deserve a huge hand of applause and appreciation.

Thanks for representing our club with pride and sailing so well.

In 2021 it is WA’s turn to host Nationals Championships and the AYC. Recently it was confirmed the South of Perth Yacht Club will host the 2021 Australian Youth Championships in cooperation with Australian Sailing.

Volunteer training is an ongoing feature and Australian Sailing WA and member clubs will embark on a volunteer training program the next two years to be properly prepared for the Championships in 2021. We welcome all interested volunteers to participate and receive training.

LASER REPORT Shaw Family Express Powers On

P

almer Shaw is continuing his Nullarbor shuttle service that sees him regularly commuting to east coast destinations with various family members and dinghies in tow. Earlier crossings supported Connor and Caitlin’s 2015 Opti Championships, another quick round trip purchased a couple of used upgrade Lasers for Team Shaw that happened to be listed in Sedona, only to return a little later to compete in the Adelaide Nationals.

The most recent transit was for a trifecta of Laser events. Laser Radial sailor Caitlin Shaw reports from Tasmania: Dad and I set off on the 28th of November across the Nullarbor for Sail Sydney and Sail Melbourne with four lasers and our BRIG inflatable. It took a total of four days, one cracked windscreen, a lot of DVD’s and my massive 25+ hour playlist that featured a range of songs from the 80’s, 90’s and some more recent songs including The Wiggles to add a bit of fun.

The Sinking of the John “Warren” Special K Avenged With the help of Rhonda, Anthony “Sharpie Slayer” Wood levelled the score at 1-1 with Mounts Bay SC by sending one of their Sharpie fleet to the bottom on Sunday’s 11-Nov-18 multiple race that followed the No. 3 Club Championship.

According to the Sharpie’s crew, they were innocently transiting the SoPYC layline on port under spinnie close to the windward mark when subjected to the unprovoked assault.

Anthony is alleged to have rounded, gybed immediately onto port for the run and lined up to hit them broadside. Conditions were gusts to 25kts with rough chop.

The Sharpies lodged a Rule 12 same-tack-upwind-boat-keeps-clear Protest despite missing the 6:30pm deadline on account of the time it took to raise and tow in the sunken wreck. Rhonda had not even a scratch

commemorating the event, with plenty of room for more notches.

Despite his efforts, Anthony was not recognized with the Port during the awards following the race, prompting the question, what does a Laser have to do to win? The Laser Fleet’s considered response? Next time, sink a Fifteen!

Grab or toe rail?

Across the Nullarbor

Sail Sydney was an experience.

Sailing on Sydney Harbour was tricky as you were contending with massive wind shifts caused by the cliffs, having to dodge the ferries and have Wild Oats 11 sailing past before the start.

Overall my results were inconsistent and not what I had hoped for but the lessons learnt I then could take to Sail Melbourne.

Sail Melbourne consisted of more weather changes then races. The Zombie Cyclone caused the weather to change from blue skies, warm and 4 knots to 30 knots, rain and freezing cold. Over the four days we only got five races as we were either blown out or glassed out. I was very happy with the races we did get in and it was a good event to get me ready for Nationals and Youth Championships in Tassie.

A little more than a week later Anthony ventured deep into Sharpie territory for the Monday evening Protest Hearing at Mounts Bay SC. The Sharpie crew’s concocted story fell apart immediately under cross. The notion that SoPYC Laser sailors were completing gybes on rounding the windward mark when even the act of easing off on starboard was resulting in mass casualties was laughed out of court. Seriously, conditions on the day would have had Brett Beyer granny tacking. But both boats were disqualified in the end. The Sharpie for the obvious Rule 10 Port/Starboard and Anthony for Rule 14 Avoiding Contact. An indication of the jury bias was the failure to subsequently prosecute the Sharpie crew for perjury and conspiracy to commit fraud.

Scuttlebutt around the Laser Tree occasionally ascends to matters of philosophical or historical importance.

One such question recently arose that touched on both: “Are the rails inside the Laser cockpit to assist re-entry after the skipper is inevitably thrown into the water by the Laser’s marginal stability characteristics, or for hooking toes under in a futile attempt to prevent same?” The answer can be found in the Laser bible 'The New Laser Sailing' forward by Bruce Kirby.

Wherein it is written that the very first legal Laser, number zero because the idea of numbering the hulls started with the next boat, was delivered without rails. And btw, Laser Zero was orange. Bruce took the boat to a winter Sunfish Regatta in Connecticut. On the way in from the course in a solid northwester, he swapped boats with one of the Sunfish fleet. The Sunfish skipper took off and immediately extended his feet to catch the edge of the lee deck, as you do on a Sunfish and capsized, as you do in a Laser in 33oF (0.5oC) water and just about froze trying to climb back aboard in his frostbite gear. So verily Bruce created the rail for both grab and toe, and it was very good.

OPTIMIST REPORT

L

eading up to Nationals, we're starting to see the sailors stepping up their game as they participate in the WAIDOA ranking regattas. Here's some reports on the several events.

Applecross Cup

This, year the Applecross Cup Series has moved to the beginning of the season when it was previously during March. Also, due to lack of volunteers, the regatta layout was changed to one day instead of two.

However, there was still a brilliant turnout with over 30 oppis in total.

The day was mainly light with a total of 4 races, and one abandoned. The results in the Open Fleet were, Aaron first, Adam second, James third.

West Sail

West Sail (noun) A trip down south (for most sailors) for the top sailors in WA to spend time to train, stay in dorms and have fun.

This year was no different and even though the location was moved to Freshie the sailors still trained hard and had heaps of fun. There were four days of training, each day starting with a fitness session and after a "quick" briefing including weather talks, we were out on the water. Coached by Swifto, Shelley, and Shannon, the Oppi sailors improved and learnt a lot during what felt like a short four days.

At the end of each day, the sailors came in, packed up and got ready for dinner which hosted some interesting talks. I'm sure everyone had a great time, and I'm certainly looking forward to next year's West Sail.

State Youths

Right After West Sail, the State Youths Series took place and it marked the beginning of the Summer Season.

It was a competitive regatta with the top 4 all finishing within 3 points of each other. In the end, after numerous mistakes from Aaron James beat him (Still Salty) with Antun not far behind.

Adam misses out on podium...The rest of the results for our Open fleet sailors were Ona 5th, Pol 6th, and Byron 11th.

In silver, Ben did well, managing to complete all races while many had to retire.

Sail Freo

Sail Freo had a great turnout with a total of 35 sailors in both gold and silver. This year, a new generation of silver fleets popped up with them really pushing the line and having a go at the front row. In the end the results in open were Aaron 1st, completing his picket fence after narrowly beating Adam in the last race. Ona got second, doing well in the stronger winds and James managed podium after an unlucky first day. Pol misses out on cupcakes‌

After 2 Semi-Final Races, Hillarys and South of Perth competed for gold leaving the two Freshie teams to fight for podium. In the end, the results were 1st: SOPYC1, 2nd: HYC Thunder, 3rd: RFBYC 2.

RFBYC ICR

ICR was the last ranking regatta leading up to nationals and it sure was a tricky one. The regatta had a variety of light and medium winds with a main course of shifty and gusty winds and topped up with rain for dessert.

Aaron finished first with a discarded gate in his picket fence. James finished second doing well on home waters and Antun came third overall.

WA Teams Racing Championships

This year, the annual WA Team Racing Regatta was held at Freshie and the competition was intense while the spectators gathered around the jetty.

The wind strength was great for the event, but there was a little mistake in the schedule for races. After the planned races were cut short, moving into the finals were teams SoPYC1, HYC Thunder, RFBYC1 and RFBYC2.

DF95 RADIO CONTROLLED REPORT

nterest continues to grow in the Radio Controlled Sailing fleet at SoPYC. Each Friday at 2:30pm a group of 23 keen and enthusiastic DragonFlite95 sailors gather at the 'pond' by the Western Hardstand area to pit their skills against each other.

Over a two hour period approximately 12 races are held around a short course. Races are now being scored. No prizes are awarded.

The Club's management have now officially recognised the DF95s as a Club fleet. Any financial Member of the Club, regardless of membership category, can join in the radio controlled yacht racing. The fleet has representation on the Centreboard (Off The Beach) Committee. Thank you to Mark Landwehr for volunteering to be the DF95 representative.

The DF95 fleet welcomes new members every week and is bringing together members from all sections of the Club. Peter Lewis reached a 'crossroad' and decided to purchase a DF95 while Past Commodore Guy Skinner has been having his fellow skippers 'turning green' with envy at

his sailing skills. Kevin Fulwood is improving every week which has been like a 'Chain Reaction' but he does need to watch his 'Ps and Qs'. Christina and John Heydon have been having a break from 'Theophis' and Tony Smith is so pleased with his DF95 he thinks it's 'Halcyon Days'. Chris Higham has shown some interest thinking it's a 'Numbers Game'.

Recently we had a welcome visit from DF95 sailors from Albany including Geoff Oliver, a previous SoPYC member. A visit will soon be arranged for a trip to Albany to compete against the DF95 fleet there.

The Australian distributor for the DF95 is Hobby Warehouse. The yacht is delivered in kit form with a good instruction manual on how to put the yacht and rigging together. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to assemble. The cost is under $500 which includes everything except 8 AA batteries which can be rechargeable.

We acknowledge and thank Rick Steuart - Perth Sailing Photography for the photos used in this article and for Rick's keen interest in the DF95 fleet. Rick has also taken some excellent drone footage of the racing.

rom the pictures you can see more great times were had by the Cruising Section towards the end of 2018, with an overnighter at Mangles Bay in November, and the Committee Christmas Party held on Saratoga in December) (thank you Steve Winter for providing your boat and for skippering).

Mangles Bay proved to be another top weekend with 6 power and 2 sail boats, 26 people and 3 dogs, all who enjoyed dinner at “Eight on the Beach” restaurant on the foreshore. This was followed by a nightcap or three on board Fonster! The crew of a certain large sail boat managed to survive the nightcaps to sail north at day break!

ower Yacht competitors and members are enjoying the summer break from competition, and the chance to be out on their boats for leisure, family and holiday time.

The Seasons festivities kicked off in November with the “Hard Stand� Raft Up / BBQ. More than 120 members and guests feasted on the delicious BBQ and smoked meat feast courtesy of Kris Townend...as well as dancing on the jetties into the wee hours, to our favourite live band, the 'New Reflections' with member Steve Keen,

Our hardworking volunteers, Bruno and Jen, once again sweated it out in the red Santa outfits to delight the children at the Christmas Party with helpers Sue Smith and Sally Hunt assisting.

Congratulations to Jason and Nat Furnell on the arrival of their baby girl Allegra, another grandchild for proud grandparents Di and Paul Ward and other potential SoPYC sailor and Time Trialler for the Sherwell family dynasty.

Sad news with the passing of Past Commodore Colin Wilson aged 94. Colin was a patriarch of Time Trialing being involved with SoPYC and the Power Section for over 40 years, including 13 years as the Club Secretary Manager. LADIES LUNCHEON GROUP Hello Summer Party November 13th 2018

O

ur start of summer party went off with a bang.

A record number of ladies attended with champagne and orange juice on arrival and fantastic canapés and finger foods. We had “Kings Park Fashions” introducing their summer range and a few of our wonderful ladies modeling the clothes.

A big thank you to Meg and Kerry from Kings Park Fashions for a great show and we look forward to more in the future.

LADIES LUNCHEON GROUP Christmas Boat Cruise December 11th 2018 The Christmas ladies boat cruise was held on the second Tuesday in December. The weather was perfect and a great day was had by all.

A big thank you to all the skippers for providing their boats and time to take us out and give us a wonderful day.

We cruised to Elizabeth Quay where some of the boats tied up. Canapes and lunch were served on-board then we sailed back to the Club for dessert and coffee.

Thanks to all the ladies for their generous gifts for the K-Mart wishing tree. A great day was had by all.

Vikki Baldwin, chair of the Duyfken Foundation, spoke to us about the history and workings behind the magnificent replica sailboat that we have resting on our jetty over summer.

In fine style, she finished her speech as the Duyfken pulled resplendent, into the jetty with the sunset behind her – in full view of our appreciative audience.

After Vikki spoke we were very lucky to have Conor Nicholas stop by to talk to us about his elite sailing ambitions – very exciting indeed – and to show his appreciation of how the Grand Sponsorship scheme has helped him reach these heights and to keep aiming higher. Watch this space – Conor’s ambition and talent will keep him very much on the road to achieving his goals and we are all really proud of what he has achieved.
