LOCATION

South of Perth Yacht Club is located alongside the Kwinana Freeway in Applecross, just minutes from the Perth CBD.

A BRIEF HISTORY

South of Perth Yacht Club was founded on 18th December 1945, celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2020.

The Club was originally located on Olives Reserve, in Como on the eastern bank of the Canning River.

Within a year the fledgling club had run its first race and erected its first clubhouse, an old army mess hut.

The hut was skilfully dismantled, each item labelled and then transported to its new home where members meticulously re-assembled each component to produce an exceptionally well-organised clubhouse complete with dance hall, boat and sail rooms and a motor boat room.

With the building of the Kwinana Freeway in 1960 the Club was relocated to its present site on the western side of the Canning River on reclaimed land in Applecross.

Now featuring a spacious clubhouse with unrivalled city views and a modern marina complete with support facilities, the South of Perth Yacht Club is a haven for the boating community and those who just enjoy a thriving social venue by the river.

TRADITIONS

Many yacht club traditions owe their origins to the Navy.

Flag officers wear uniforms with a formal navy cap bearing a Club badge. The epaulettes they wear on their shoulders and bands of rank worn on their sleeves all started from naval badges of rank.

Ceremonial cannons used at significant events such as opening days are also a feature of military customs.

Bell rings for announcements or for celebrating victory are a feature of yacht club protocols and respectful silence during announcement of results is considered normal.

A FAMILY-FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE

Many parents choose to share their child’s sailing adventures at the Club. There are numerous opportunities to do so. Experienced sailors may take their children sailing with them at an early age while others with no sailing background may watch their offspring in awe as they learn to harness the power of the wind to travel on the water. There are many ways for parents to become involved – as volunteer beach assistants, race management volunteers, helping in the canteen or by sharing their social activities.

ACTIVE PARTICIPATION

South of Perth Yacht Club is a boating club with many layers of boating related activities. Members bring a variety of skills and interests to the Club and their participation is encouraged at all levels, be that competitive, social or “just mucking around in boats”. Activities cater to all age groups, ranging from cruising to boatbuilding and windsurfing to recording the Club’s rich history in the Archives Section.

South of Perth Yacht Club has a proud history of conducting major events on the water.

With a strong volunteer base including nationally accredited race officers, professional staff attending to organisation and support equipment to run a wide range of regattas and championship events, it attracts interest from many class associations. Perfect racing waters of the Swan River make the Club an ideal venue.

Its most recent world championship event, for more than two hundred Windsurfers, was spread over three different courses all over the Swan River.

WORLD-CLASS COACHING

South of Perth Yacht Club has world class coaching programs to cater for emerging talent, weekend sailors and elite competitors engaged in world competition. Our members have achieved State, National and World championship titles and in 2024, the Club’s first Olympic representative.

The development of sailing is one of the prime objectives of the South of Perth Yacht Club. Professional coaches, accredited by Australian Sailing, help members to enjoy their sport and reach their individual goals. Coaching involves the full range of sailing activities from basic “learn to sail” courses to preparing competitors for their State and National championship events, including weather observations, sail trim and tactics.

SAILING PROGRAM

South of Perth Yacht Club is regarded as one of the premier yacht clubs in Western Australia and the Club’s racing program and activities reflects this standing.

The Club strongly encourages on-water participation of members as part of an active and successful yacht club. There are many ways for boat owners to participate in Club activities with club racing for dinghies and keelboats, time trialling for power boats and cruising for both sail and power. The Club even caters for a fleet of radio controlled yachts.

You may be completely new to sailing or a seasoned racer, young or not so young, male or female. No matter what your background and experience, South of Perth Yacht Club can offer you a boating experience to suit your skill level and boating ambitions.

Racing is conducted all year round on Wednesday afternoons. Keelboats race on Saturdays in the summer and Sundays in winter while off the beach dinghies race on Sundays. Radio controlled yachts race on Friday afternoons.

Twilight sailing takes place every Wednesday evening through summer, taking advantage of beautiful sunsets, a relaxing sail and a return to the Club to socialise over a meal and refreshments.

It you are not a boat owner but still want to be close to the action and excitement on the water, crew and volunteers are always welcome.

POWER YACHTS - TIME TRIALLING

The very active power yacht section at the South of Perth Yacht Club enjoy time trialling events from May to September each year.

Time trialling is a boating activity available to any member with a craft capable of navigating at a speed between five and fifteen knots under engine power. A time trial event involves travelling and accurately maintaining a predetermined course between fixed marks on the river at a nominated speed.

Family participation is encouraged and time trialling provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy your boat during the winter months, having fun, learning the local waters and appreciating the capabilities of your vessel while improving your own boat handling skills.

As with all groups at our Club, the power yacht section is very welcoming and organises a range of activities so that members of the groups can spend an enjoyable time in each other’s company both on and off the water.

CRUISING SECTION

The cruising section at the South of Perth Yacht Club is all about laid-back recreational boating with activities arranged to appeal to those who just want to get out on the water with friends and family to enjoy our fabulous river and coastal destinations.

With favourable weather conditions we might cruise to Fremantle for fish and chips or perhaps even a visit to the Maritime Museum. We might make our way to Matilda or Freshwater Bay for lunch or to sit back to enjoy sundowners with cocktails or balmy lunches on the lawns.

Others might make longer cruises to Mindarie, Mandurah or Quindalup and the Rockingham Beach Races have also proved popular.

When the section wants to go juvenile, there’s always a pirate raid to fall back on.

On or off the water, there is always something happening in the Cruising Section.

Twilight sailing is not competitive, but allows skippers to share their passion with family and friends in a relaxed and friendly sail around a set course. No spinnakers are allowed.

A safety boat accompanies the fleet until the last boat is safely back in its berth.

It is laid back sailing at its best, with the beautiful Swan River sunset as a bonus, followed by refreshments and perhaps a meal back in the clubhouse.

QUARTERDECK RESTAURANT

Members love to dine at the Quarterdeck. Great food prepared in the adjacent kitchen by our creative chef and his helpers, served while you enjoy the best possible views of the Swan River and the city beyond.

Monthly specials brighten up a tasty a-la-carte menu, all available with member discounts.

This is al-fresco dining at its best. Clears protect diners from the elements when necessary, making the restaurant warm and cosy on those cold winter nights, while the sea breeze helps keep the temperature down on warm summer days, helped along by tropical overhead fans.

To avoid getting stranded on the water, it’s crucial to ensure your battery is fully charged before setting sail.

TIPS FROM THE BATTERY EXPERTS

When you’re out on the water, store the battery in a dry area away from the elements to ensure optimal performance.

Prevent premature battery failure by securely fastening it in the carrier and avoiding unnecessary movements during your adventures.

The most important tip of all is - Don’t be a stranger!

Marine batteries are meticulously engineered to withstand the intense vibrations caused by wave pounding, making them the only choice for powering boats.
