A Brief History South of Perth Yacht Club was founded on 18th December 1945 and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2020.

The club was originally located at Point Hampton, Como, on the foreshore near to present day Olives Reserve.

The club held its first race less than a month after its formation and within a year had erected its first clubhouse.

The original clubhouse building was an old army mess hut, which was dismantled, transported and skilfully converted by members into an exceptionally well laid out clubhouse complete with dance hall, boat and sail rooms and a motorboat room.

In 1960 the club was relocated to where it now resides at Coffee Point on the western shore of the Canning River in Applecross.

At the heart of its local community and blessed with exceptional facilities and a wonderful location to match, the club has come a long way in 75 short years.

The Club caters for a thriving membership with a diverse range of boating interests. SoPYC was awarded the Marina Industries Association “Club of the Year” for 2019-2020. We were also recognised by the Association for the best environmental initiative by a marina in 2019-2020.

Located less than 10 minutes from Perth CBD, the Club offers a complete range of sailing, power boating and social activities and opportunities for all. Facilities include water pens, hard standing for trailable yachts and powerboats, under-cover storage for racing dinghies and marine travel lift and slipping facilities. SoPYC also runs a Sailability program and radio controlled yacht racing.

Our sailors enjoy a wide diversity of yachting, both power and sail, with a very social cruising section for more relaxed occasions. Time trialling power yacht fleets are the largest on the river, and the fleet welcomes and accommodates the inexperienced and expert alike.

The next generation of sailing stars are being trained in our Sailing Academy, which offers an extensive range of training courses conducted by a talented team of qualified instructors.

Sailing Program South of Perth Yacht Club is regarded as one of the premier yacht clubs in Western Australia and the Club’s racing program and activities reflect this standing.

The Club strongly encourages on-water participation of members as part of an active and successful Yacht Club. There are many ways for boat owners to participate in Club activities with club racing for dinghies and keelboats, time trialling for power boats and cruising for both sail and power. Radio controlled sailing is also conducted.

You may be completely new to sailing or a seasoned racer, young or not so young, male or female. No matter what your background and experience, South of Perth Yacht Club can offer you sailing that will suit your skill level and sailing ambitions.

Twilight Sailing takes place every Wednesday throughout the Summer sailing season, with early evening Club racing against the backdrop of the sunset, members then come back to the clubhouse to socialise over a meal and refreshments.

If you are not a boat owner but still want to be close to the action and excitement on the water, crew and volunteers are always welcome.

Racing is conducted all year round on Wednesday afternoons, and Saturdays in the Summer and Sundays in the Winter for keelboats and Sundays for off the beach dinghies. Radio controlled sailing is conducted on Friday afternoons.

Sailing is the perfect recreational or competitive sport for all ages. South of Perth Yacht Club has a dedicated team of qualified instructors and coaches, and we deliver structured training programs to cater for all.

Our mission is to promote and develop the sport of sailing through Learn to Sail, Club Training and Advanced Performance Training programs for all age groups.

The Club is proud of the part it plays in introducing the next generation of sailors to our great sport and does so in a way that teaches skills and emphasises fun without compromising on safety.

Our Sailing Academy courses are not only for kids. We also run courses for teenagers and adults. If you have never tried sailing before we provide a safe and enjoyable environment in which to learn.

We strive to be in the forefront of sailing and boating and our Academy uses state of the art equipment.

Learn to Sail South of Perth Yacht Club is an Australian Sailing accredited Discover Sailing Centre offering learn to sail programs for all ages and levels of experience.

The Junior Learn to Sail Program comprises three levels and is aimed at children between 7-10 years old: f Try Sailing (Tackers 1) f Learn to Sail – Green Fleet (Tackers 2) f Transition or Bronze Fleet (Tackers 3) In addition, we run courses for teenagers and keelboats: f OutThere Sailing for 12-17-year-olds and adults f Keelboat Learn to Sail for adults The Club also offers learn to sail for both junior and senior schools in varying formats as part of the Tackers and Catamaran programs.

We run sailing as an after-school activity, as a PE class during the school term or as a camp-based activity.

Discover Sailing Experiences are another option for the Club to give school groups, corporate groups, friends and family a one-off sailing adventure to give a taste of what the sport of sailing is about.

Power Yachts - Time Trialling

Cruising Section

The very active power yacht section at South of Perth Yacht Club enjoy Time Trialling events from May to September each year.

The cruising section of the Club is all about laid-back recreational boating with activities arranged to appeal to those who just want to get out on the water with friends and family and enjoy our fabulous river and coastal destinations.

Time trialling is a boating activity available to any members with a craft capable of navigating at a speed between 5 and 15 knots under engine power. A time trial event involves travelling and accurately maintaining a predetermined course between fixed marks on the river at a nominated speed.

Family participation is encouraged, and Time Trialling provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy your boat during the winter season, having fun, learning the local waters and appreciating the capabilities of your vessel and improving your own boat handling skills.

With favourable weather conditions we cruise to Fremantle for fish and chips or may even visit the Fremantle Maritime Museum, make our way to Matilda and Freshwater Bays for lunch or sit back and enjoy sensational sundowners with cocktails or balmy picnics on the grass, while longer cruises to Mindarie, Mandurah and Geographe Bay are regular attractions.

On or off the water, there is always something happening in the Cruising Section so come and see what we are up to!

As with all groups at our Club, the Power Yacht section is very welcoming and organises a range of activities so that members of the group can spend an enjoyable time in each other’s company both on and off the water.

Regattas and Special Sailing Events South of Perth Yacht Club is committed to excellence in sailing and nowhere is that more evident than in our hosting of regattas and major sailing events open to our own members and those from visiting clubs.

The Club has everything required for a successful event: spectacular location, good racing waters, superb sailing and hospitality facilities and a Club that is run by friendly people in a professional manner.

The Swan River makes for a breathtaking backdrop to any racing activities and the vibrant city of Perth is just a few kilometres away.

Available to anyone over the age of 18 whose usual place of residence is more than 100km radius from the Club.

Provides full voting rights, the use of all Club amenities; including boat pens and all other associated facilities. Variations of Ordinary Membership include Family and Centreboard.

Social Membership For people who are interested in the social side of the Club, ranging from non-competitive sailing, to the enjoyment gained by being involved within the social life of a true sporting club.

These provide the chance to catch up with old friends and are the perfect opportunity for new members to meet many of their fellow members.

Members can also enjoy views of the Australia Day fireworks celebrations from the comfort of the yacht club.

One of the main social events of the year is the Commodore’s Ball, a black‑tie event with delightful food and live entertainment.

The Bosuns’ Club is the Club’s equivalent of a Men’s Shed. There is great camaraderie among this group of volunteers, who meet regularly to perform tasks such as boat building and general maintenance.

Each year the Club holds a Melbourne Cup Garden Party, a sell-out event which sees members gathering at Perth’s premier waterfront location to watch the race on the big screen and enjoy the live entertainment.

The Ladies’ Lunch Group meets on the second Tuesday of each month to enjoy interesting speakers and social activities.

Other social events include ticket-only events with live entertainment.

Past headline acts including Wendy Matthews, Daryl Braithwaite, Kate Ceberano and Kasey Chambers.

The Children’s Christmas Party highlights the family feel to the club. It is a hugely enjoyable afternoon for the young ones and their parents, with fun and games, farmyard animals, face painting and a jumpy castle. Plus, of course, a visit by Santa.

Promenade Marquee and Front Lawn The latest addition to South of Perth Yacht Club’s exquisite venue spaces is the Promenade Marquee. Seating up to 200, the venue space extends onto the front lawn so guests can dance the night away under the stars on outdoor decking.

Ballroom Our Ballroom incorporates the magnificent front lawns, fully furnished with contemporary furniture, festoon lighting, it is the perfect place for canapés, dinner and drinks.

Wardroom Blessed with magnificent views from upstairs, the Wardroom overlooks the water. The city of Perth dominates the skyline and on a clear night, the views of the Swan River shoreline sparkle across the panorama that lies before you from the balcony.

Perfect for weddings, private dinners and seminars.

Beach Marquee and Lawn With its beachside location, the views, the lighting, contemporary furniture and a timber deck overlooking the beach, the Beachside Ballroom Marquee is perfect for cocktail style weddings and parties.

Our Marquee pricing includes all staff and a manager to look after you, all furniture in the Marquees, festoon lights on the front lawns and lounges, our oak cross-back chairs and round tables, all linen, crockery and cutlery, full set-up and clean-up of the venue. We also include a hanging centre flower arrangement for you, which you may add flowers to if you wish.

Heritage Room Nestled into the river side of the Club, with its own projector, screen and audio-visual facilities, the Heritage Room is suitable for seminars and meetings. Meals can be served in the nearby dining area, giving guests the opportunity to enjoy the views.

Committee Room With a boardroom style set up, the Committee Room is suitable for meetings and seminars, with projector and screen facilities available if required.

Contact Us How to Find Us South of Perth Yacht Club is located at Coffee Point in Applecross, a picturesque suburb south of the river. It is an easy 10-minute drive from the CBD. Directions Head south out of the CBD on State Route 2/Kwinana Freeway, crossing the Swan River. Remain on this road for around 7km before getting in the left two lanes to take the State Rte 6/Canning Hwy exit. Turn right at the top onto Canning Hwy/National Route 1/State Route 6.

After crossing the Swan River again (600m), take the next right turn onto Canning Beach Rd. Remain on this road for 1km, taking the second turning (right) at the roundabout, which will bring you to the entrance to the Club.

There is a large car park in front of the clubhouse.
