Following the election of the new Management Committee last September, our Club embarked on a purposeful and transformative journey. In the early months, we streamlined operations, restructured key areas, and refined governance— ensuring our focus aligns with longterm sustainability. These initiatives reflect our evolving ethos of “One Club, Many Passions,” as championed by Past Commodore Mark Nicholas. Whether racing, cruising, enjoying time trials, contributing as volunteers, or simply socialising, we are united by shared values and belonging.
At the heart of our renewal lies a critical insight: culture is not a consequence of operations—it’s the compass by which we steer. Rooted in tradition and camaraderie, our culture reflects pride in boating, inclusivity, safety, and community spirit. It flourishes in our regattas, races, environmental stewardship, social gatherings, and everyday moments—embodied in every interaction from our youngest crew to our seasoned leaders.
We also recognise the power of connection beyond Club boundaries. Through member-led initiatives, volunteering efforts, and intergenerational engagement, our strength is magnified by participation. Youth involvement, mentorship, and tailored programs are fostering fresh energy and renewing our legacy.
This past year has seen thoughtful financial stewardship. In April, members approved a 2.5% fee adjustment—endorsed with transparency and care—as part of a broader strategy to future-proof our resources. Internal reforms have already resulted in cost savings approaching $350,000, illustrating prudent leadership and an adaptive mindset.
COMMMODORE’S REPORT | Brian Cross COMMODORE’S REFLECTIONS: A Year of Purposeful Change
Our forward momentum is guided by three strategic pillars:
1. Strengthening Financial Security
We are refining systems, aligning decisions with Club values, and unlocking operational efficiency— with transformative leadership from our Interim General Manager driving this progress.
2 Governance and Operational Reform
Modernising policies and systems brought clarity and responsiveness. With growing member support, our transition toward a Board of Management is gaining traction— promising stronger oversight and deeper strategic planning. Alongside this, digital upgrades and administrative refinements have bolstered transparency and ease.
3. Fostering Culture and Inclusivity
Our members remain the heartbeat of the Club. We are expanding participation opportunities, welcoming diverse perspectives, and responding to shifting social expectations with integrity and
innovation. From youth sailing and junior mentoring, to celebrating new social and cultural initiatives—our Club is evolving together.
We are equally committed to environmental responsibility. Through sustainable practices, partnerships, and awarenessbuilding, we honour the waters we enjoy and safeguard their future. In times of change, clarity of communication matters more than ever. Rumour and conjecture must give way to transparency and trust. We encourage every member to stay engaged, ask questions, and contribute ideas. Meaningful dialogue is how we move forward—together.
To our staff, committee members, and tireless volunteers: thank you for making change not just possible, but deeply personal.
With tradition as our compass and innovation as our sail, we navigate this new chapter. Anchored in purpose and powered by people, the Club is well-positioned for a future as enduring and vibrant as the waters we call home.
In a dynamic shift that reflects both modern needs and cherished traditions, the Member Engagement Committee — formerly the House Committee — has emerged as a cornerstone of our Club’s revitalised structure. With representation from every corner of Club life, from Food and Beverage to Archives and Volunteers, the Committee now provides a vibrant forum for collaboration, feedback, and forwardthinking initiatives.
The transformation of management structures has been met with enthusiasm, enabling staff to take lead roles across Member Engagement and Media. Monthly meetings are now enriched by contributions from a diverse cast of volunteers: Bernie Kaaks, Rick Steuart, Judy Bailey, Robin Wilcockson, Rob Willis, Wendy Jorgensen, Ann McCluskey and Justine Barron, with Carl Petterson advising on his project as needed. The meticulous minutes captured by Committee Secretary Sue Smith ensure no detail is overlooked.
One of the most tangible achievements has been the Clubhouse refurbishment — beginning with asbestos removal and culminating in a refreshed, modern ambiance. The transformation goes beyond aesthetics: the removal of white linen from the dining area has halved linen costs and created a more casual, welcoming dining experience for members and guests alike.
A Tribute in Threads
Perhaps the most poetic development was the creative preservation of the 1980s burgees once hung around the ballroom bulkhead. Too fragile for reframing, the 74 visiting club flags were carefully dismantled by our Bosuns and digitally archived by

Rick and the Archives team. Thanks to the inventive touch of volunteer Bobbie Stevenson, their legacy lives on — hemmed onto organic linen tea towels, now strung across the Quarterdeck Bistro in a display that’s equal parts homage and acoustic enhancement.
With the return of Soundings Magazine to members’ letterboxes, the mantra “One Club, Many Passions” echoes through the pages of our cherished bi-annual publication. A heartfelt thank you to delegated editor Bernie Kaaks and his editorial team, as well as the many scribes, contributors, and photographers who continue to capture the spirit of our community.
Technology is also under the spotlight, as the IT Steering Committee explores platform options to enhance our website experience — weighing the merits of the Northstar system against alternative digital pathways.
Underpinning these successes is the quiet dedication of our
administrative staff. In a year marked by change, their commitment has been unwavering. Special recognition goes to John Pedretti, whose guidance has anchored his team through transitions, aligning roles with the sustainable and financially responsible future our Club aspires toward.
What a year it has been on the water! South of Perth Yacht Club can be proud of the achievements of our sailors. Listed earlier in this Yearbook are our Championship winners.
Our Optimist sailors Charlie Purt and Murray Duthie deserve a special mention. While participating in the National Championships in Queensland, both qualified for 2025 international representation,
Geographe Bay Race Week saw the following SoPYC yachts participating: Murphy’s Law, King Canute, Risky Business, K-Factor and Spritzig 2 Murphy’s Law had a successful regatta finishing 1st overall in Division 1 and 3rd Division 1 (IRC). Spritzig 2 managed a credible 3rd in the Jib and Main A fleet. The event remains WA’s premier regatta, being well organised and extremely popular. It was also well supported by our Flying Fifteen and Viper 640 fleets.
On Saturday, July 26th, I attended the naming ceremony for the yacht James Thomas Martin. The UFO34 yacht was brought back from the scrap heap to fully operational status,
REAR COMMMODORE’S REPORT

thanks to the Sailing On group, who spent hours revitalising her. The boat was appropriately named after a 21-year-old soldier who was killed in Afghanistan. The event was attended by James’ mother, Suzanne, the Minister of Defence and Veterans’ Affairs, the Honourable Matt Keogh and two current serving Army staff sergeants. In joining the other Sailing On yachts, this yacht will be instrumental in helping returned and current Defence personnel overcome the immense mental anguish and re-assimilation issues that many have to confront on a daily basis. Our sincere thanks to Club Member Guy Mewburn (Army Major ret and Chairman of Sailing On WA) for organising and hosting this event. If you would like to assist this cause in any way, please go to the following link at sailingonwa.org.au
The one offshore event hosted by the Club this year was the highly successful Pieces of Eight race. Thanks to Matt Rose, Offshore Captain, and his organising team, the April event was extremely well organised. The race will be run again
in November with some lucrative enticements on offer. Further updates will be posted in Coffee Pointers Every November, the Goolugatup Sailing Carnival (GSC) brings together sailors, coaches, volunteers, and families for a spectacular celebration of junior and intermediate off-thebeach (OTB) sailing. The Carnival aims to inspire young sailors through unique racing formats, fostering skill development, teamwork, and a love for sailing in a fun, competitive environment. It is the Club’s premier training and competition event. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact our Sailing Captain, Victoria Blanckensee.
Frostbite and OTB winter sailing have had some cancellations due to poor weather, however, both fleets are well represented on these occasions. After each race most sailors huddle around the Yachtsman’s Bar fireplace, enjoying the free hot soup specially provided for them.
As I mentioned, it’s been a very full year of boating with many sailors either celebrating or commiserating. I hope that the winds and seas treat you gently.
GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT
John Pedretti
Having joined the Club at the beginning of 2025, I have witnessed and overseen a period of considerable change. I extend my sincere thanks to all members for their support and understanding as we transition to a more structured and strategic way of working. Your encouragement and engagement has been invaluable to the operational team and have helped us maintain momentum during this important phase.
One of the most notable achievements this year has been the introduction of a new Club Management Software. This system represents a major step forward in how we manage Club operations and engage with our members. Over time, it will deliver a range of benefits, including improved management information, streamlined communication and the launch of a dedicated Club App. This app will enhance member access to Club
services and provide more targeted updates about events and activities. While some features will be rolled out in the 2025/2026 season, the groundwork laid in 2024/25 sets a strong foundation for future innovation.
Operationally, we are implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) across key areas of the Club. These SOPs will help ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency in the services we provide, while also supporting our staff and volunteers with clear guidelines and expectations.
The year ahead promises to bring further positive changes, and I am confident that together we will continue to build a Club that is not only proud of its heritage but also forward-thinking and memberfocused.
Thank you for your continued support.

SOUTH OF PERTH YACHT CLUB INC
SPECIAL PURPOSE FINANCIAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2025 TREASURER’S REVIEW
Overview
The financial results for the year indicate a significant downturn, shaped by a challenging trading environment and operational pressures that impacted oversight and performance.
The reported loss of $326,541 before prior-period depreciation adjustments underscores the need for a more resilient financial strategy. On a brighter note the Club did achieve an overall surplus of $549,489 after adding back depreciation and other non-cash items providing a foundation for future recovery.
To support this transition, the Club has appointed a new General Manager and Finance and Administration Manager. These appointments, together with strengthened engagement from the Management and Finance Committees, have led to the development of a revised operational approach. A budgeted profit of $230,000 has been set for the 2026 financial year. While this figure remains below optimal targets, it reflects the beginning of a longer-term transition aimed at restoring financial stability and strengthened governance.
Food and Beverage Operations
The following table highlights employee expenses as a percentage of combined bar, catering and room hire turnover, highlighting the trend and its impact on operational efficiency.
Numbers not comparable due to Covid related issues
Over the last three years employee costs in the Food and Beverage operations significantly exceeded historical and industry standard levels. Based on turnover figures, had employee costs been maintained at approximately 47% of turnover, the Club’s trading position would have been approximately $745,000 better than achieved.
By way of comparison, it is noted Fremantle Sailing Club achieved a 44% figure on a turnover of $3.5 million for the year to 31 March 2025.
Concerns regarding wage costs and operational inefficiencies were raised by members in relation to the financial statements for both the 2023 and 2024 financial years. At the time, staffing levels, including the number of permanent supervisory staff and general duty coverage, were disproportionately high. The Club also remained open on Mondays and Tuesdays despite consistent financial losses on those days.
Subsequent review by the Finance Committee has identified that key internal controls, accountability mechanisms, and reporting procedures within the Food and Beverage operations required strengthening to meet the Club’s evolving operational needs. Inventory control, both in terms of physical oversight and accounting for inventory movements, were found to be below the standards expected for an operation of this scale. These findings have resulted in the implementation of enhanced financial controls, clearer lines of accountability and improved reporting frameworks, however, further work is required to restore operational efficiency and financial sustainability in this area.
Prior Period Adjustment - Depreciation
In the revised 2023 financial statements presented to members on 31 October 2023, a substantial prior period adjustment was recorded in relation to depreciation previously applied to land associated with the Western Hard Stand (WHS) and Eastern Hard Stand (EHS) developments.
Under applicable accounting standards, land whether naturally occurring or reclaimed is not subject to depreciation, as it is considered to have an indefinite useful life. Depreciation applies only to assets with a finite useful life, such as buildings, infrastructure, and machinery.
As part of the WHS development, approximately 8,500 square metres of land was created and is now reflected on the Club’s land title. The EHS development resulted in the creation of approximately 1,673 square metres of land, which is currently in the process of being added to the Club’s land title.
At the time of the original accounting treatment, an amount of $505,591 related to WHS land and $1,982,356 related to EHS land was not depreciated. The Finance Committee at that time, comprising myself as the then Treasurer, Rupert Leslie, James Hodder, and Past Commodore and Life Member Colin Cowden, determined that a portion of the overall development costs should be allocated to land creation, with the remainder attributed to depreciable improvements. This treatment was agreed with the Club’s auditors.
In October 2023, the revised treatment classified the entire amounts as depreciable assets. No formal explanation was provided to members regarding the rationale for this change. Records indicate that the adjustment was not minuted or formally approved by either the Finance or Management Committees at the time.
In preparing the Special Purpose Financial Report for the year ended 30 June 2025, both the Finance Committee and the Management Committee resolved to reverse $670,392 of prior year depreciation previously applied to land and confirmed that no depreciation would be charged on land assets in the 2025 financial year and thus restate the balance to those recorded as at 30 June 2018.
Computer Software and Accounting System Transition
In February 2024, a decision was made to transition from the Xero accounting software to the NorthStar accounting and management package. Meeting minutes did not document the associated costs, implementation timeline, staff training plans, or the rationale for the change. There was no formal assessment of whether Xero’s existing functionality or available add-ons could meet the Club’s operational needs.
The NorthStar system was activated on 1 September 2024, while the 2024 financial year accounts were still being finalised. No parallel run with the existing system was conducted. As of the reporting date, the Club has not yet utilised NorthStar’s value-add modules and is currently operating it as a basic accounting platform.
The implementation of the NorthStar accounting and management system has encountered significant challenges. The process has involved substantial costs and required considerable time and effort from both staff and external consultants to resolve technical and operational issues
NorthStar includes features that, once fully implemented, have the potential to enhance business management and reporting capabilities. A dedicated committee has now been established to review the Club’s broader information technology requirements and ensure future systems are better aligned with operational needs.
Cash Position
Whilst the operating result was unacceptable, the Club was nevertheless cash flow positive for the year. Capital expenditure was kept to a minimum. At both 30 June 2025 and 30 June 2024, the Club had fully drawn down its fixed debt facility of $3,000,000 with the ANZ Banking Group Limited. In addition, the Club has a $2,700,000 variable rate redraw loan facility which had a $800,100 balance owing at 30 June 2025 and $500,000 owing at 30 June 2024.

I have been approached by many members to see if I would be interested in nominating for Commodore as they are not happy with the direction the Club is heading, and more concerning the high percentage of staff turnovers.
I believe I can assist the Management Team in coming to a beneficial result to an unfair dismissal claim.
I would also like to see the members return to the Club rather going to other Clubs.
I am very concerned that the Volunteers are not protected by members’ outbursts, especially in the Power Section.
I especially want to see the fun come back into SoPYC. One Club Many Passions

The 2024–25 sailing season was one of competitive spirit and community connection across both river and ocean events. Club members proudly represented the South of Perth Yacht Club at major regattas and club championship series throughout the year. The racing and camaraderie were excellent, while bringing home some impressive results.
Our Twilight Series flourished with the introduction of the new ‘Spin’ initiative, boosting onwater participation and post-race celebrations. Social sailing and Club competitions remained vibrant throughout the season, thanks to the energy of our members and generous support from our sponsors.
The return of the Yimbala/EuNa-Mara event brought together the Sailing and Power sections, strengthening bonds across the Club, through friendly competition and shared learning.
Ocean racing saw several boats consistently participating in the series whilst upholding the Club’s proud offshore tradition.
At another well-attended combined Prize Night on May 23rd the Sailing section, along with the Off the Beach section, came together to recognise and celebrate our seasonal division and special event winners and runners-up. It was an excellent evening where some of our sailors swapped sails for dancing shoes, mingling with sailors from different sections and enjoying the social side of club life.
The inaugural Christmas Sundowner was another memorable event, bringing back the spirit of earlier days with live music and dancing on the Club lawn whilst

Our Sailing committee has worked hard all year behind the scenes, not only delivering a full calendar of racing, but also addressing wider challenges facing the sport – such as declining boat numbers and volunteer shortages. Collaboration with other River Clubs and initiatives like ‘Crew Finder’ are helping us chart a positive course going forward.
A heartfelt thank you goes to all our volunteers, race officials, division reps, and staff members who make our racing and events possible. Your contributions are the backbone of our success.
We look forward to building on this momentum and seeing even more members on the water in the season ahead.

TPOWER SECTION REPORT
Justine Barron & IPC Troy Dalglish Power Captain
he 2024 time trialling season saw strong participation numbers with afternoons resulting in enjoyable camaraderie and a few bell rings back in the bar at presentations.
The 2024 season was marked by a strong and consistent fleet participation across both Club events and the eight CPYA State heats. State heats contribute to our Club’s overall results, reinforcing the close alignment between State and Club level competition.
Behind the scenes, the committee continued its efforts to uplift the season by refining events, ensuring flag winners were recognised with prizes made possible by the generosity of our section sponsors, many of whom have supported us for years. Our season finally closed with the Power section prize night. As is always the case, the evening was a celebration of not just competition, but of the participants’ involvement and progress throughout the year.

Our new committee was elected at the AGM in August for the 2024/2025 season. Jason Claricoates stepped up to be our new Power Captain along with new Vice Captain - Robin Wilcockson. The rest of the committee are: Chris Pearson (Sponsorships), Bernie Kaaks (CPYA Representative), Claude Mancini (Treasurer), Steve Wall (Courses and Team Selection), John Cooper (Pens and Moorings/Marina Compliance), Vice Commodore Amanda Watson (Cruising Representative), Margaret Cooper (Starter), Lynne Cooper (Trophy Officer), Justine Barron (Publications/Scribe) and Judy Bailey (Social/Functions).
The Power committee is always keen to encourage new boats to participate in time trialling, organising training sessions for those new and old. To date, we have had an ‘Introduction to time trialling’ course and an ‘Advanced Theory’ course, both of which were presented by our current club champion and captain – immediate past commodore Troy Dalglish.
The jetty Christmas party in November was a big hit as usual. Taking our own food and drinks along, we were entertained by a band, ensuring a fun night was had by all as we danced the night away. New
member Anthony Julien, with his boat Angel, took out the prize for best dressed boat. If you haven’t been to one of our jetty parties before, come down and join us this year. This event is open to all club members. Other events enjoyed this year are the annual cocktail party, band nights, music bingo and more.
At the start of the 2025 season in May, the Rapidly in Pursuit (RIP) Trophy was presented to John and Lynne Cooper by IPC Troy Dalglish and Dee Kelly. This trophy has its origins dating back to some friendly banter between Club legends Bryan Carter and John Jordans and passed from one runner up to the next, all in good fun.
OFF THE BEACH REPORT
The off-the-beach section of our Club has had a fantastic year, marked by growth and active participation across all fleets. Our ILCA fleet saw a surge of younger members moving up, thanks in part to the dedication of our ILCA fleet members who repaired and maintained club boats, making them available for juniors and beginners to lease. The Optimist fleet is thriving, with senior members transitioning into ILCAs, and enthusiastic Bronze and Silver-level sailors graduating into the Bravo Racing Fleet.
Our Open Skiffs saw many senior members graduate to both the ILCA and 29er fleets, with some having outgrown the smaller boats. One of the year’s highlights was Kaison Puls’ absolute domination at the World Championships, finishing 85 points ahead of second place after his drops. As in previous years, SoPYC skiff sailors were dominant on local regatta podiums – great work!
The Chernoff sisters continued their progress in the 29er, picking up tips from the WA fleet while attending numerous regattas and training camps. Their hard work paid off with a 1st Junior result at the WA State Championships. We hope to attract new and current 29er sailors to join the racing fleet in the coming season!
This winter, SoPYC Pelicans welcomed visitors from GBYC and
GYC for the winter series. The Bosuns Club tidied up two Club hulls, and with borrowed sails, a small fleet was formed, raced by both Optimist and Skiff sailors enjoying doublehanded action. Though the wind gods were not entirely cooperative at the time of writing, the forecast for this weekend is promising! Notable finishes for the Pelicans include Miles Beck crewing for Xavier Putt to take out the Pelican State Championships, and the Beck sisters, Lailah and Ophie, having a stellar Pelican season, winning the Easter Regatta and finishing fifth at the State Championships.
The Alpha course continues to benefit from strong volunteer participation, with a dedicated core group eager to welcome fresh faces. Our friendly members are always happy to share their knowledge, making it a perfect space for new volunteers. It has been fantastic to have our Commodore supporting OTB sailing all year!
The Bravo course remains vital in training new mark-laying, support and start teams, as well as assisting junior sailors with their coaches. While many parents have volunteered regularly, we look forward to building a roster of families to actively engage and witness their fleet’s progress. Don’t hesitate to volunteer for Bravo course support – it’s great fun!

PENS & MOORINGS
Ash Hicks Chair
The Pens and Moorings Committee led by Ash Hicks as Chair and his team, working closely with the Pens and Facilities Administrator Natalie Bradshaw, are responsible for the allocation of water and land pens, and the administration of the Marina Safety Compliance (MSC) program.
The MSC Inspectors currently comprises Mike Markham, Mark Hayman, Daryll Wilkes, Bruce Uren and newcomers Greg Northover, Brian Smith and John Spanos.
The functions and responsibilities carried out by these dedicated and committed Inspections have the sole purpose and are in fact integral, in ensuring that the ongoing activities and safety aspects of each and every vessel using any of the marina and associated facilities in any capacity is maintained to the highest standards and those ongoing efforts are certainly recognised and appreciated.
As the year progressed, our stock of vacant pens diminished considerably and the Committee has been increasingly faced with the dilemma of having to allocate temporary pens to new members bringing boats into the Club pending a suitable permanent pen becoming available.
When considering pen allocations or potential reallocations, the team’s primary focus is, and will continue to be in accord with the Club’s long standing and wellestablished philosophy and principle, that priority will be afforded on a member’s length of membership, their history of involvement and contribution to the Club.
With a view to reducing the level of boat inspections requiring rectification works, considerable time has been taken in developing and improving the process for members to arrange an MSC inspection and a new more user-friendly form that has been developed and loaded onto the club’s website to assist Members.
Also changed this year, is the process for the annual testing and tagging of shore power leads. A contractor was engaged to run a program where leads were tested and tagged on the jetty without the necessity or physical involvement of members at the time. With some ongoing fine tuning it is hoped to build on the success of this project which also resulted in cost savings for the Club.
Behind the scenes, the Committee is conducting a full review of the policies and marina regulations that both the committee and Inspectors operate under.
Assistance is also being provided to the Works Committee in respect to a project to identify boats in pens where the use of mooring line compensators will reduce the damage being done to our outer jetty infrastructure due to wave and wash action.
Whilst there remains much work to be done to achieve the proposed objectives and review, the Chair, committee and inspectors acknowledge the support and understanding generated by the Members using the marina and associated facilities.
Their continued co-operation in ensuring that boats are maintained in good condition remains paramount in respecting their ongoing obligations to ensure environmental issues are not compromised. Safe boating!

BOSUN’S CLUB |
Rick Steuart
The skill levels amongst the Bosuns club members varies with some of us better as bean counters while others are better offered a plane or a sander. Some of us can organise the hell out of getting a barbie ready, while some are better at laying on a coat of paint.
But the bosuns get things done and according to our bean counter, this year we have put forward work valued at over $40,000 with $235,000 in the last 4 years. The work done by the refuelling and maintenance teams looking after the Club boats is extremely important and they do it every week, sparing the Club bosuns for more productive work around the club. The rest of the team have notched up a pretty good record as well. The Navigators Wheel was restored, the picture rails in the Heritage room were prepared, a new flag box was made for the starters, a lot of the Club functions furniture was stripped back and re varnished. A good number of the Club PFDs were refurbished and that’s just for starters. Whirlwind Dave did a wonderful job on restoring the bow of Dorothy J and it now sits proudly under the Champions board in the administration foyer.
All the wine barrels that have been rolling around the Club have been taken back to basics, re varnished and in some cases new bungs made for them. A couple of garden seats were restored and are now in place. Along with these, the Club’s new tables for
the Quarterdeck were assembled. On request from the sailing vice-captain, Bob the Man Overboard dummy was given a new lease on life. We have adopted a couple of the Club Pelicans and are currently putting new bits and pieces on them and restoring the timber work on them. Why? Well, the Pelican was considered one of the best training dinghies on the river and there is a crying need for a boat that two juniors can sail on together. So that is one of our winter projects.
Of course this is only part of the list of things, but the Bosuns club has a dedicated team named here: Doug Cowie, Dave Roberts, Bruce Cadee, Bob Harrap, Eric Schwab, Theo Berden, Brian Cross, John Midolo, Bruce Uren, Campbell Stewart, Rick Steuart, Mark Abercrombie, Bob Motteram, Kevin Doig, Alan Sharpe, Nick Sharples, Ken Baxter, Gordon Roe, Phil Draber and everyone else whose names we have inadvertently missed.
Please don’t think that you can’t join us; we need all the volunteers we can get. Come down to the shed on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning and join with the team or contact Bob Harrap on 0407 991 901 to find out what’s it all about.
THE ARCHIVES & HISTORY GROUP |
Rick Steuart
Amassive task has been achieved recently with the clean out of fifteen to thirty years of old files that had accumulated at the back of the reception offices. That and the chance to look for old photos and work files referencing the changes and evolution of the Club. I’d like to mention the work of long-term member Alan Sharpe who volunteered to engage in the task of sorting the files with the safeguards of the presence of a couple of the Archives group to take care of items deemed to be of value to the archives group.
Members will already have seen one of the outcomes in the Members bar with photograph albums from the 1980’s and 90’s put on display for
the members perusal. We are eagerly sorting to see if we have more, but from 2000 onward most of the images were committed to CDs and later on DVDs.
A recent acquisition, the Juniper cabinet has already gone through two changes and is looking at a third as we take the opportunity to show off various small items that the Club owns. Otherwise, Vice Commodore Amanda, as a member of the Archives group has been working on getting the visiting club burgees copied and strung up in the Quarterdeck. The bow of the Dorothy J, a 30 square metre boat, now resides in the administration foyer after restoration by the Bosuns Club along with a photograph of her in action and her
history beside it. Many thanks to Dave Roberts who carried out the restoration. The Navigators Wheel, donated by PC W.E David has been restored with thanks to the Bosuns club and has returned to the entrance foyer to the Members bar and the Ward room.
The old Trophy Cabinets next to the On Water Group were cleaned and filled with labels and descriptions of the items inside the cabinets. The Heritage Room has been finished with a selection of club pictures and photographs hung on the walls and plans are afoot to do the same for the Bar of the Wardroom, being mindful of the need to keep the Wardroom itself clear for function use.
The Archives & History group also deals with requests from the public and members and we are glad to say that we have assisted the club management in several matters and answered queries about past and current members where we could do so safely.
We are currently looking at photographing/scanning a stash of old club plans that have been presented to us and it will be of great interest to see what they can offer the Club.

DIVISION 1 REPORT
Dave Thoms
Whilst the competitive retirement of Farrago, Fremantle Doctor, EunNa-Mara and The Avenue and the dismasting of Problem Child have impacted fleet numbers this season, the addition of Tora Tobu and the return of Double B have been welcome additions as would any others who may be considering joining the fleet.
Although there were only six regular starters, Octopussy, with a perfect score utilising the ORC Club Rating System, became the outstanding and well deserved winner of the Club Championship, followed by the ever consistent Wicked taking second and Murphy’s Law in third. Proposed changes to the schedule for next season will hopefully entice others to participate.
Club Consistency winner for this year was K-Factor followed by Tapestry and Mistress Quickly in third.
Given the low level of participation for the Saturday Consistency series, and in an effort to encourage and increase numbers next season, the 25/26 schedule will include a six-race series to be conducted in conjunction with RPYC and results from those races will also contribute to the Club’s consistency winner.
There have been 8-10 boats regularly fronting the starters gun each Wednesday afternoon throughout the year, with a diverse and well deserved list of honours and
placings being shared throughout the division for the winter, autumn, spring and summer series and there is confidence that the participation and competitiveness demonstrated this season will continue to grow going forward.
Over the season, eleven different boats from the division took part in the twilight series which was also a great turn out and providing a format in which sailing in the first instance as well as the more social aspect of the sport can be enjoyed.
A couple of boats from the fleet ventured under the bridges and represented the Club at Cockburn and Geographe Bay regattas.
K-Factor was a clear winner of Division 2 at the Cockburn Regatta and was also named as the overall winner of the regatta. The Club was again also well represented and successful at the Geographe Bay regatta where Murphy’s Law was the worthy winners of Division 1 while our other participants also rose to figure in the lower division results.
Special mention must go to the crew of Wicked who sailed Risky Business in the regatta and showed the true spirit and commitment to sailing in being able to keep the boat competing despite a few gear failures.
It was good to see a couple of Division 1 boats participating in annual Billy Run to Rotto. This is a great Club event to which the
regular attendees will attest, and with strategies already being considered to entice others to join in next year, there is hoped that more boats will participate and let the crews get out and experience unrestricted open water sailing.
Overall, it has been a successful year for Division 1 and there is confidence that all participants can look forward to an even better season in 25/26.

COLE 32 CHAMPIONSHIP
Once again this year, five Cole 32s battled it out for the Leon Symonds Trophy, which is awarded to the Cole 32 Champion. The Coles race in division two is under the handicap system, however the Championship is first past the post.
This season was yet again, very competitive. Five keen skippers and crew were on the water for the seven championship races with five to count. The final results after two drops were - Colusion Barry Arnold (5 points), Mingara George Ruul (11 points), Good Act Greg Munt (12 points), Cover Drive Peter Were (16 points), and Against All Odds Tawake Rakai (17 Points)
Racing was close and the Club Champion (who made a couple of mistakes in the last two races), ended up 4th and 2nd. Congratulations to Greg Munt and his team on Good Act for their wins in the final two races.
The Cole 32 is a great boat to sail on the river. Pointing well, they are extremely well mannered in all breezes. If you are keen on sailing on the ocean, the Coles are a really good sea boat. If you have a Cole or just want to crew on one of these great boats, come down and introduce yourself, we’d love to meet you.
DIVISION 3 REPORT |
Nick Melidonis
Division 3 had a quiet but effective and enjoyable season with around three regular starters on the start line:
Martine sailed by David Cole, Commotion sailed by Martin Compton and Hellas sailed by Nick Melidonis. As the season progressed, Hellas and Commotion made the most appearances and there were a few races where Hellas was the only starter, due mainly to crew issues on other boats.
Perhaps the most enjoyable outcome from the racing was the excellent camaraderie after each race, often giving the H28 fleet a run for their money at the response from the Commodore when results were about to be announced.
I, for one, miss the good old days when ten or more boats turned up at the start line for a day of good sailing on our amazing river. All clubs are facing severe shortages of boats turning up for racing although there are scores of boats sitting in their moorings each week using the Club as a marina.
Our thanks to Martin Compton for doing a superb job as Division 3 representative for a lot of the season but his load as a volunteer caused him to pass the baton to Nick Melidonis from Hellas, ably supported by Rod Thiele.
Nick could see that the diminished fleets both from SoPYC and RPYC (his previous home and close by for mid-river starts) was going to be the answer by combining both fleets for the coming season. After much debate, this was accepted by both clubs and we are looking forward to new fleets, new courses and new camaraderie for the coming season.
We hope to have some more Division 3 boats from our Club join us for the coming season.
Race results for the past season were: Consistency Championship and winner Doug Rickman Series; Hellas (Nick Melidonis)
Murray Jones Trophy to Commotion (Martin Compton).
A very well deserved Division 3 Crewperson of the Year went to Rod Thiele.
I wish all Division 3 Yachts good sailing and fair winds for the coming season.
RED WITCH REPORT | Kelvin Uren
The Red Witch fleet of yachts are a very colourful group. The hulls display all the colours of the rainbow when were all together on the starting line. The ages of those participating also varies greatly proving you are never too young or never too old to sail on a Red Witch yacht. When the summer sailing season comes to a close we realize how much we truly miss our Saturday afternoon sailing.
We have all had an awesome season with great camaraderie, good competition and a lot of laughs with good memories.
The season started very well for Witch Doctor, achieving third place overall in the combined fleet Patrons Trophy Pursuit at the start of the season. And like a pair of book ends, Witch Doctor finished third overall in the combined fleet Commodore’s Trophy Pursuit, at the end of the season.
In the combined fleet Frank Sampson Memorial Pursuit race, Shenanigans took the overall victory being first yacht across the finish line. The spinnaker run down to Dolphin West was a blast, achieving speed over 10.3 knots and allowing us to pass all of the other boats and set us up for the win with an unassailable lead.
In the Red Witch Club Championships for the season, the overall winner was Shenanigans, skippered by Kelvin Uren, achieving seven first place wins. Second place was Witch Doctor, skippered by Daniel Marshall and in third place was Hornblower, skippered by Tony Snow, with Escapade finishing fourth, Madge fifth and Bewitched sixth.
For the Red Witch Consistency Trophy, after twenty races, Team Shenanigans was first overall on 28 points. Second place went to Witch Doctor on 33.5 points and third to Hornblower with 47.5 points.
During the season, there were three handicap races called the Jeff Claflin Tri-series. The trophy is awarded on handicap results and was won this season by Darren Brown on Bewitched
On the third Saturday in March every year, we remember a great friend and skipper for the Daniel
Wyatt memorial race. Daniel Wyatt was the owner and skipper of the Red Witch Escapade. He was a very enthusiastic sailor and we remember him each year with this event. The Wyatt family presented the trophy and this year the race was won on handicap by Witch Doctor, sailed by Daniel Marshall.
The end of season prize night was well attended by Red Witch crew and skippers. Everyone gets on very well and there were many occasions
for great laughter and sharing stories. There were many trophies presented and smiles for photos. The winner of the best crewperson award for the Red Witch fleet was won by Ivy O’Toole.
A good number of Red Witch skippers and crew attended the annual racing rules nights at SoPYC and this was great to see. Everyone is keen to know more and it really sets the scene for a great upcoming summer sailing season at SoPYC.
SPACESAILER 22 REPORT |
Bruce Uren
It has been another successful season for the SS22 class, albeit with a small fleet. The competition between the top three boats has been intense with many highly enjoyable, friendly, close tussles. The class provides very inexpensive one-design racing with enthusiastic support available to all.
The fleet has continued to suffer from lack of participation in the season just completed. The decline has been continuous over the last 15 years with the vast majority of boats that change hands moving away from the Club. For a new owner, upfront nomination and pen entry fees are a serious deterrent. This is a difficult situation as the Club clearly needs to maintain financial viability.
The continuing strength of the fleet is rooted in in the participation in the SS22 State Championships series where we join boats from EFYC and CYC in a series of seven races. These races are well liked by the fleet as it facilitates sailing against boats from the other clubs at six locations around the river. This season Bruce Uren’s Wildfire won the State Championship by a single point from Sea Mist VI from CYC whilst David Mickle’s Mele Bilo III won the state
consistency.
At the Club level Wildfire won the Club Championship and Consistency with Mele Bilo III second in each of these.
It was great to see Murray McLean’s Finovola participating on a regular basis and it started the year with a bang by winning the Opening Day Patron’s trophy pursuit race. Wildfire also narrowly won Division 3 at the annual Cockburn Sound Regatta for the second year in a row. This is a sensational event conducted each year by The Cruising
Yacht Club at Rockingham between Christmas and New Year. The few boats from SoPYC who participate always have a great time both on and off the water. It is highly recommended to all sailors that don’t have family commitments in the period.
Bruce Uren was very satisfied to be awarded the Club’s Keelboat Sailor of the Year at the annual presentation evening. If anyone would like to know more about the class, please feel free to contact Bruce Uren on 0427 644 638 or email bruceuren@westnet.com.au
S80 REPORT | Mark & Jim Gooding
South Perth S80 Racing and Championships
The S80 Association elected a new President for 2024/25 – Mark Gooding – an experienced SoPYC S80 and FF15 sailor. The new committee is building on the S80 initiatives already in place and adding other options to the drawing board to support the longevity of the S80 class on the river at both SoPYC and RPYC.
The 2024-25 season has now ended and participation was steady in terms of sailing numbers in both Club and association events.
SoPYC S80s raced in all association events conducted including the Metropolitan Championship, Swan River championship series, UK Halsey Sailmakers short series, overall S80 Association Season championships and SoPYC Championships.
At SoPYC Championships and events during the season we had a reasonable number of boats racing on Saturday and Wednesday afternoons including Abby Road, Don’t Panic, Fair Game, Glasgow Kiss, Zinfandel and Shadowfax
S80 Legends Event
The prestigious Legends Day annual event, hosted to honour S80 legends past and present, was this year conducted by SoPYC and saw some 14 yachts entered to race with six from SoPYC . Retired ‘Legends’ are invited to skipper a racing S80 and the event has been running for several seasons.
The Big Gold Cup (Real Gold) was won by Simon Cunningham from RPYC sailing Rumrunner – a very good event, good conditions and good skipper and crew.
S80 State Championships
Glasgow Kiss (Greg Tonninson), Shadowfax (Mark Gooding) and Don’t Panic (Mat Selby) were the SoPYC entries. Glasgow Kiss won the event followed by Misbehaving (Phil Slee) taking second ahead of Shadowfax after a countback. This year’s S80 State Championship
event was again held in Cockburn Sound and conducted from the Royal Perth Fremantle annexe.
SW Championships
Bunbury has been building a strong fleet of S80s and conduct the SW Championships each January. The Koombana Bay Sailing Club now boasts about dozen S80 yachts.
It was a great SW Championship with Misbehaving (Phil Slee) taking the chocolates with Shadowfax (Mark Gooding) a close second. This maintained the Bunbury boys’ strangle-hold on the trophy – the Bunbury club has always won this trophy and no Perth crew/yacht has yet managed to bring the cup back to Perth from this annual Bunbury event.
The last South of Perth Yacht Club race of the season was a teams race between Royal Perth and South of Perth with the top three yachts from each club scoring their race result. South of Perth Yacht Club were the worthy winners.
Winners are grinners!

WOMEN’S SAILING SQUAD |
Mara Lowry
The Women’s Squad at South of Perth Yacht Club proudly represented the Club in key events throughout the year, continuing to develop skills, foster camaraderie, and grow competitive spirit on the water.
Women’s State Keelboat Championships
SoPYC entered a team helmed by Mara Lowry in the 2025 Women’s State Keelboat Championships, held over the weekend of 5-6 April and hosted by East Fremantle Yacht Club. Racing took place on Foundation 36s, with five teams competing across six races.
Despite having only a couple of hours of training together prior to the event, the SoPYC team showed impressive determination and teamwork. Special thanks to Conor Nicholas for his invaluable on-water coaching and to Rear Commodore Nikki Kukura for her enthusiastic support during the event.
Racing conditions were particularly challenging. Saturday saw strong, shifty breezes in the notorious ‘drainpipe’, while Sunday brought light, variable
winds and strong currents. The competition was fierce, with Fremantle Sailing Club, led by RAMP skipper Nia Jerwood taking out the overall win. SoPYC placed fifth overall and gained valuable racing experience.

In the lead-up to the event, Mara, April, Wendy, and Tess would also like to thank Ian Stewart and Cliff Lawrence for the opportunity to race R2D2 in a Wednesday afternoon race, where the team secured first place on handicap.
Inter-Club Championships –Women’s Session
The Women’s session of the InterClub Championships was held on 12 April at Mounts Bay Sailing Club.
Helmed by April Jorgensen, the SoPYC team included junior member Harriet Mellor and competed across four races to finish fifth in the women’s division.
When combined with scores from the Veterans and Open sessions, SoPYC achieved a commendable 3rd place overall in the Inter-Club Championship series, highlighting the strength of the Club’s racing teams.

The Women’s Squad remains a vibrant and growing part of SoPYC, and we look forward to building on this momentum in the coming season–welcoming new sailors, strengthening our skills, and continuing to represent the Club with pride.
HERRESHOF 28 | Ernie Little
We now have thirteen H28s on the SoPYC boat register, following the loss of Koomela which sank in its pen on Jetty 7 early in 2025. Koomela was deemed unsuitable for restoration and it was ultimately scrapped, with the mast donated to the Section as a spare. The loss has not affected the sailing competition, as the yacht had not raced in recent years. In better times Koomela was previously owned and raced by Past Commodore Frank Billings.
Two of the fleet, Karoleeya and Carina have not raced for several years and are in need of some major restoration work. (Will they ever race again? Good question!) Two other H28s, Georgina and Napea of Carrick, despite the best of intentions, nominated but
did not really participate in any of the year’s sailing series.
On the plus side, Ralph Newton purchased Alma during the year and completed some overdue maintenance, with the yacht now looking new again with its unique duck egg blue painted hull. There is no doubt, once Ralph has organized a
full crew for all race series, that Alma is going to add a new dimension to the competition.
On the other side of the ledger, Wynella suffered the loss of its rudder during a too close encounter on a Saturday race in December and was out of all sailing competition for three months. Also absent from most of the
competition during the early part of the year, was our Commodore Brian Cross (Mariner), who committed the major part of his time at the helm, fulfilling the needs of his new management role.
We also lost Len Randell from our sailing competition, who decided early in 2025 to relinquish his brief time on the tiller with The First Jindarra as he found the yacht not suited to his purpose. We wish Len all the best, and good sailing, for his return to the Division 1 fleet. Past Commodore Phil Lammonby took over the temporary management of The First Jindarra repairing a few cracked ribs, caulking a few weeping seams and fitted a new starting battery. He sailed a few races but is not able to continue regular sailing because of work commitments. At the time of writing, we are looking for someone to take over The First Jindarra.
So, with nine H28s sailing regularly in the year’s competition series, the participation rates are described, below:
Saturday Racing Series –
Participation is better than the previous year with 2 races having 6 yachts, 8 races having 5 yachts, 6 races having 4 yachts, 3 races having 3 yachts and 1 race having only 2 yachts. Aloha sailed all 20 races, Swiftsure Saga 19, Nerrima 16, Wynella 14, Corella 7, Alma 6, Mariner 2, Anna 1, Georgina 1 and Napea of Carrick 1.
Midweek Racing Series – As a guide, I have illustrated the level of participation in the series from Opening Day this season to the 16th April 2025. With a total of 25 races, 1 race had 8 yachts, 3 races had 7, 8 races had 6, 5 races had 5, 5 races had 4 and 3 races had 3.
Swiftsure Saga sailed 24 races, Corella 22, Mariner 19, Nerrima 17, Wynella 15, Anna 11, The First Jindarra 10, Alma 9 and Aloha 4. All sailing competition results for the year were published in the 2025 Winter edition of Soundings. David Locke was Club Champion for the second year in a row. The future of the H28 sailing competition is looking good!

Sailability is a self-funding, not-for-profit volunteer-run program. Our mission is to: ‘Provide sailing opportunities for people with a disability, regardless of their ability, mobility or circumstances.’
Season In Review
Supported by 55 volunteers, we saw 570 participants sailing across the season – approximately 32 per session. Although season 2024/25 provided 26 Wednesdays to go sailing, the weather was either too hot or too windy, on a number of days. We don’t sail on days over 35oC or in winds above 15 knots- leaving us with 18 suitable days.
Our Current Fleet
• 5 Hansa 303 (dinghies designed for sailors with disabilities)
• 1 Etchell
• 1 Windrush
• 1 Spacesailer 22
• 3 Red Witches
Supporting the sailing fleet, under an arrangement with SoPYC, we access powerboats for additional
Fundraising and Sponsors
Sailability operates through the combined support of the Club, together with many of its members and non-members too. We recognise the dedication of our volunteers and the generosity of our sponsors.
A big thank you to our sponsors in season 2024/25, they are:
• Bunnings Warehouse
• Containers for Change
• Healthway
• Griffiths Engineering
• Pelican Manufacturing
• Radio Warehouse
• Rotary Melville
• Sailability WA
• Tyrepower Port Kennedy
• Wilson Marine
Through the year we also gathered financial support mainly through:
participant experiences together with safety coverage on the water.
Accessibility
During the year we increased our flexibility on the jetties, by expanding the number of hoists and locations where they can be deployed. This resulted in both time saving and ease, when moving participants who need lifted assistance in and out of boats.
Safety
Participant safety is our overarching guide. This is delivered in each session, where we sail only in designated safe protected water, supported by a safety boat. All vessels are under the control of experienced volunteer skippers and crew. Volunteer safety is of course equal to participant safety. Hauling the 303s out of the water, over the waffle jetty is a strenuous task. Through the ingenuity and welding skills of Ted Collinson and his son-in-law, this task has been made so much easier and safer. A big thank you to Ted and sonin-law, for the 303 trolley hauler.
• Bunnings Sausage Sizzle - raising just over $2,000. thanks to the participation of 18 volunteers and the coordination of David Robinson
• State Government Grant –$38,000 through Kim Giddens MLA (member for Bateman) for the purchase of boats, sails and jetty equipment.
In the Off-Season
At season end, after eight and a half years, Program Coordinator Liz Warman stepped away from Sailability. Although a brief farewell was shared at the closing day, Liz’s absence and contribution will be long remembered and sorely missed. Immense gratitude and thanks to Liz.
At Sailability, we are privileged to be surrounded by like-minded people who are directly or indirectly dedicated to serving the community, in the name of sailing. With volunteer numbers being the main limitation to increasing our impact, we encourage any club members (or friends) to join us and share priceless moments enriching the lives of our participants and of each other.
FLYING 15 REPORT |
Russell Dawes
Each season has it’s expected moments and some that came from a bit more left of field and 24/25 was no exception .
If betting was ever going to be part of the process, any astute bookmaker would certainly have shortened the odds on Best Foot Forward being close to, or at, the front of our fleet and the odds would have certainly shortened even further following a successful campaign and clean sweep in the very competitive Australian Championships.
Highlighting the quality of the sailing program and the committed sailors within the fleet at Club Ineffable placed second overall and Final Fifteen finishing a very credible fifth in a very competitive fleet at the championships.
Fast forward a few weeks when the State Championships, which had steadily developed into a two-horse
race, was eventually decided on the last leg of the last heat when Best Foot Forward, having utilised a selection of crew throughout the season, took the final honours. Ineffable had substantially closed the margin, but alas, ended up finishing second.
All that action at the front of the fleet prompted the Ineffable boys to add a bit of humour and frivolity to prize night and adopt an ‘always a bridesmaid’ attitude when they arrived on the night wearing matching evening gowns to reflect their state of mind.
Even the more open-minded members of our section would have to agree that some things can’t be unseen and, while there have been photos circulating, they won’t be getting aired in a wholesome publication like the South of Perth Yacht Club Yearbook!
This year, the club consistency was only able to be finally decided on
the last racing day with the winning margin in the end being only half a point that saw Final Fifteen finally prevailing and getting the nod from Faffin in a close battle that had persisted throughout the season.
Lots of work gets done off the water so that things can run smoothly, so sincere thanks are extended to our Captains for their efforts.
The meetings and input required in order organise and maintain a racing program catering to a very healthy fleet of boats is never easy; however the outstanding results that were achieved across both local and national events are certainly an appropriate recognition of their outstanding efforts.
A great season that was had by all participants certainly augers well for the ongoing success of the section going forward.
See you in a few short months for opening day.
OCEAN RACING REPORT |
David Staniforth-Smith
Ocean racing offers a unique and rewarding experience beyond what river racing can provide. Longer courses give crew members valuable opportunities to broaden their sailing skills by taking on different roles, including time at the helm and sailing in unfamiliar positions. Add in ever-changing sea conditions and stunning ocean scenery – often featuring dolphins, seals, or whales – and you have an experience that is both challenging and unforgettable.
This season saw the welcome addition of new yachts to the fleet, competing alongside familiar names. The Section looks forward to building on this momentum in 2025–26.
The Ocean Racing Section welcomes new yachts and crew. If you’re interested in joining, contact us at oceanracing@sopyc.com.au.
ORWA Events
SoPYC is a founding member of Ocean Racing WA (ORWA), alongside FSC, RPYC, RFBYC, and HYC. Each year, member clubs host a series of short and long-haul ocean races.
Only one long-haul race is held every year and SoPYC hosts the Geraldton Ocean Classic every second year. This season SoPYC introduced a new short-haul event for alternate years: the Pieces of Eight Race, which was met with enthusiasm and featured a thoughtfully designed course that challenged all participants. A big thank you goes to our volunteers, SoPYC staff, and especially to Chris Hind, Matt Rose, and Sailing Administrator Matt Doyle for their work on planning this new event.
Our club members crew on numerous ocean racing yachts in the ORWA series with member Guy Skinner crewing on the Siska Trophy winner Obsession this year. Although based on the river, SoPYC continues to have strong ocean racing presence through King Canute, skippered by Matt Rose. Matt and crew delivered a standout season in the ORWA series, including:
• Cape Naturaliste and Return Race – 1st in IRC & PHS Division 2, and 1st Combined PHS
• Point Robert Return Race – 1st in PHS Division 2
• West Coaster Race – 1st in IRC & PHS Division 2
Other Regattas and Events
Whilst the racing at the Cockburn Sound Regatta in December was fierce at times, this regatta is primarily about a fun week on the ocean and bringing the skippers and crew together for enjoyable social activities in the evening. This saw four SoPYC yachts compete, with excellent results:
• Wildfire – 1st PHS Division
• K-Factor – 1st PHS Division 2, 2nd IRC
• Random Times – 2nd PHS JAM3
• Tapestry – 3rd IRC Division 1
February saw SoPYC yachts successfully competing in the Geographe Bay Race Week.
Congratulations to the Murphy’s Law team who placed 1st PHS and 3rd IRC in Division 1 K-Factor, King Canute, and Risky Business also performed well in Division 3.
Another calendar highlight was the Billy Run to Rottnest, held together with EFYC’s Darcy Run. Six SoPYC yachts took part in tricky conditions. Congratulations to Murphy’s Law – 1st Division 1; Ballina – 1st Division 2; and Vision – 1st Division 3
The Ocean Racing Section wish to extend our sincere thanks to our 2025 sponsors, Wilson Marine, Nail Brewing and Bare Creative. Please show your support by visiting Chris Pearson’s chandlery for your boating needs, enjoying a Quokka Export in the quarterdeck bar or a Nail beer from John’s great range, and by contacting Cally next time you have graphic design requirements. Our sponsors have generously supported many events at SoPYC, not just within the Ocean Racing community.
CRUISING SECTION | Peter Coghill
This year has seen the Cruising section change its captain from Paul Stott to Peter Coghill. Paul remains on the committee as vice-captain. Thanks go to Paul for his time and efforts whilst volunteering in this role. Our committee members are Paul Stott, Amanda Watson, Garry Morrison, David Barton, Rob Willis, Jan Culver, Brian Culver, Dave Kazim and Marcel Every.
During the 24/25 year, the Cruising section held a number of events including a cruise/drive, organised by Dave, to Claremont Yacht Club for lunch on 18th August 2024. The event was well attended by over fifty SoPYC members, partners and friends. Unfortunately, as the weather blew up with gusts of up to 40 knots, so what was intended to be a cruise turned into a road trip. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful relaxed event with lots of good food, drinks, laughter and camaraderie.
Guest speaker John Adams gave a very interesting seminar on 23rd October 2024 entitled “Learn how to find more fish with your echo sounder”. This experienced seafarer and commercial fisherman talk was organised by Paul, Dave and Rob and let’s face it, the more help you can get when targeting fish to land in your boat the better.
On 27th October 2024, a Rottnest cruise to Thompson Bay Cruise
had been organised by Marcel, but alas, once again the weather gods intervened. The event was changed to a Rocky Bay raft up which resulted in blue skies and a great day on the river.
An upriver Cruise to the Peninsula Farm Café was held on 17th November 2024, organised by Vice Commodore Amanda Watson and Garry Morrison. A lovely lunch was enjoyed by all, followed by special entry to and a tour of, Tranby House Museum.
Many cruisers headed to Rotto for the Christmas period and for the cray season, where Sundowners were a nightly event between the boats. Some lucky SoPYC members stayed there for over 3 months, that’s how good it is.
On the March Labour day long
weekend, SoPYC (and others) were invited to the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing club, to join them for an ‘Aegean Escape’ This involved a Champagne Bay raft up, Bar Odyssey and an Aegean-themed Buffet dinner, all of which were just magnificent.
A number of Cruisers helped out with checkpoint duty for the annual Billy Run sail to Rottnest on 8th March and enjoyed yet another fun weekend.
The Cruising section welcomes skippers and crew from both sailing yachts and power boats to participate in all our events.
I wish to thank the Cruising Committee for their efforts during the past 12 months.
DF95 REPORT (Radio Controlled Yachts) | Nick Jerwood
2025 has been a bumper year for Dragon Flite (DF) 95 radio control yachts at SoPYC, thanks to the efforts of its members. We regularly enjoy fleets of 10 or more boats sailing in the western hard stand launching area in front of the Club on Friday afternoons. Racing runs from 3pm to 5pm, with early-birds practicing for the day’s competition beginning around 2pm for those that can make it that early.
Sailing is open to all SoPYC members and it would be terrific to see more prospective sailors from the wider SoPYC membership consider joining in the fun and give the little racing thoroughbreds a shot. While the controls of the yachts are basic whilst sailing, limited to just the rudder and sail winch while afloat, boat speed around the course is optimised by fine preset adjustments of outhaul, cunningham, vang, mast bend and back stay etc, just as it is on bigger boats. These fine tune adjustments being made between races can often make the difference between a race win, or mid fleet position. Such is the challenge of our friendly and competitive racing.
If you fancy a shot, then contact our fleet representatives Kevin Fulwood or Nick Jerwood who will be able to arrange for a session with the fleet to experience sailing the DF95 and hopefully you, like many others
before, will catch the bug of radio control yacht racing.
DF95s (and spare parts) are readily available from local suppliers or from a well-stocked warehouse in NSW through online shopping. It is hard to imagine how anyone can get more fun per dollar from the sport of sailing than is enjoyed by the DF95 sailing community.
We have members who sail regularly at local partner radio control yacht clubs as well as competing in state, interstate, national and international competition. Sailors can enjoy the camaraderie of sailing only at SOPYC or incorporate additional opportunities into their sailing calendar. The next additional opportunity for our group is the Australian Nationals being held at the
end of September in Port Adelaide, followed by the WA States held in November in Jackadder Lake and then looking forward a bit further into the future, the DF95 Global Championship to be held in one year’s time by the Cape Radio Yacht Club, Theewater, South Africa, not forgetting an open invitation event to be staged at Bettenays Winery in Margaret River which will combine some great culture, food and wine as well as a lot of fun racing.
Our objective is to provide an enjoyable experience for all sailors, week in, week out, irrespective of experience or racing ability. A platform to learn, develop and broaden your sailing experience at very low cost.
Why not give it a shot?
ST AYLES SKIFF REPORT |

BST AYLES SKIFF ROWING: A
Year
of Growth, Friendship, and Adventure
y July 2024, Saturday morning rowing became a regular activity, with crews braving choppy waters and strong winds as well as enjoying calmer, sunny conditions. As the weather improved, sessions shifted to Sundays, drawing more interest. Our WhatsApp group buzzed with boat bookings, photo sharing, and – most importantly–coffee plans.
In September, the East Fremantle Skiff Association hosted SoPYC and RFBYC for a breakfast BBQ and rowin-company. Despite a strong easterly wind and outgoing tide, the event was a success and marked the beginning of regular inter-club rowing–fostering new friendships and healthy competition.
These clubs reunited for the SoPYC Opening Day sail past and soon after, SoPYC crews took part in Swan Yacht Club’s Opening Day. October saw us supporting the Navy League’s Veterans Health Week by rowing alongside East Fremantle Skiff Club.
In November, one of our skiffs was featured at Fremantle Ports Maritime Day as part of the Amateur Boat Builders’ Association exhibit. Members from both the Bosun’s Club and rowing group helped promote the St Ayles Skiff movement.
In December skiff rowers, Bosun’s Club members, and East Fremantle friends gathered for a celebration,
complete with a feast courtesy of Rick Steuart’s BBQ skills and delicious desserts from our rowers.
We welcomed several UK visitors throughout the year including Jacqueline, who brought insights from the UK skiff scene, Mark and Carole, who joined Sunday rows and coffees and added international flavour to our outings.
On Australia Day weekend, SoPYC participated in the Augusta Picnic Regatta, competing with five other clubs. Bruce Cadee, Greg and Leanne Howell, Ian Johnson, and Alan Sharpe raced in sprints and the 3.5 km Blackwood Challenge. Leanne also rowed with East Freo’s women’s crew.
The 65th HMAS Perth Memorial Regatta at Nedlands Yacht Club attracted over 130 boats from 13 clubs. St Ayles Skiffs from three Perth clubs joined the tribute. SoPYC’s team –Anne Benson, Leanne Howell, Simon Page, Bruce Cadee, and Ian Johnson – helped highlight skiff rowing to a broad audience.
While we didn’t place at Augusta, the experience sparked motivation. A new Tuesday group formed, focused on performance. Meanwhile, Alan Sharpe, Bob Harrap, Bruce Cadee, and the Bosun’s Club redesigned the oars to be longer and wider – yet within regulations. Thanks to these upgrades and the training efforts of Alan, Anne, Greg, Leanne, and Simon, our crew placed 2nd among 13 mixed teams and 6th overall out of 27 in a national 5 km time trial.
In June the Albany Maritime Foundation launched two new skiffs, bringing WA’s total to thirteen. SoPYC supported the build with molds, supports, and Bosun’s Club expertise. A team consisting of Bruce Cadee, Ian Johnson, Anne Slavin, Peter Black, Alan Sharpe, along with Bob and Lorraine Harrap, attended the launch and first row on Princess Royal Harbour.
Though weather on the harbour was rough, the Kalgan River provided perfect conditions the next day. A sausage sizzle at the Rowing Club Shed wrapped up the weekend. Back at the Airbnb and warmed up by the wood heater, we enjoyed good food, good wine, and better company – a memorable time away.
A lot has happened with our St Ayles Skiffs this year, and even more is planned for 2025/26. Skiff rowing is one of the fastest-growing activities globally– and for good reason.
With four sweep rowers and a coxswain, skiffs are surprisingly easy to row, suitable for all ages, and require no experience. Most of our members had never rowed before. Both our skiffs are regularly on the water, and there’s room for more. Whether you’re interested in competitive, social, or fitness rowing – everyone is welcome. To get involved, contact Anne on 0426 724 810 or Bruce on 0419 508 785.
