W

e live at an exhilarating and tenacious pace filled with distractions tugging for our attention; our daily objectives are routinely tested as we attempt to stay focused on balancing life’s needs and pleasures. And, while digital advancements have come to the aid of dispersing information and technology, there’s an emotional and physical toll to be paid for unyielded immediacy and access. The stress of being intertwined with news and events, personal responsibilities, and societal pressures seemingly compete with the ability to focus and evaluate information when formulating valid opinions and making decisions. A prime example of this thesis is how a large segment of the population gave irrational support and undeserved comfort (believed to be financed by off-shore influences) to groups crafting systematic rioting, looting, and violence, 20 | DECEMBER 2023 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

causing an estimated $2 billion in damages. At any other time in history, such antisocial behavior would have been ostracized rather than celebrated in a parade through the Village of Padanaram, Massachusetts, and many other locales around the country. Additional support included many posting signs in front of their homes and businesses. Reluctantly, we ask, were these actions motivated by fear or sympathy? In the aftermath, we learned that organizers pilfered monies raised on behalf of the organization for personal financial gain. It’s a sad commentary, but it has us questioning where the new ‘money trail’ will lead. For December, our monthly feature, “Well Being,” Hysteria—An Invisible Influence Shaping Opinion by Rob Saint Laurent, M.Ed., explores critical research, explaining how a large segment of the public was swayed into believing there was a reasonable explanation for widespread lawlessness, which continues today.

The stress of being intertwined with news and events, personal responsibilities, and societal pressures seemingly compete with the ability to focus and evaluate information when formulating valid opinions and making decisions.

Not keeping pace with the same fury found on the streets is the condition of the real estate market. While the narrative being shouted at consumers focuses on the doom and gloom of rising interest rates, you can be assured those with the opinion “we’re falling off a cliff,” weren’t a gleam in anyone’s eyes when mortgage rates rose to over 18 percent in the late 80s; still, homes listed and sold, and appreciated over time. This month’s piece, Trends, Misconceptions, And The Rewards of Real Estate shares insight from a writer whose boots are on the ground in

neighborhoods that make housing prices look like bargains. Learn the real issues in the realm of home buying and selling. With the holidays comes a mixture of feelings—not always joyous. We decided to bring the topic to your attention and address the issue of loneliness. A story not getting much traction, we learned that the U.S. Surgeon General has announced loneliness and isolation have evolved into a serious problem, so far as to call it an “epidemic.” With this knowledge, we look to share hope with those lacking cheer and bring awareness to others to be on the lookout and show

kindness to someone they know is alone. Regardless of your holiday of choice for the month, we have two sections to motivate you to get into the spirit; first, be sure to take a look at how the Preservation Society of Newport will dress their Mansions—inside and out—this season, they’re also offering a unique dining experience taking place all month long. Nothing says Happy Holidays like a trip to view the grandeur and the timeless energy of America’s favorite journey into the past. Finally, if you are looking for a unique gift you won’t find elsewhere, and of the

finest quality and reputation, we have it for your review. Be sure to visit our annual “Gift Guide” highlighting the ‘Best of the Best.’ Without further ado, from all of us who appreciate the pleasure and privilege of publishing the only upscale lifestyle magazines of their kind for almost two decades and delivering it to the widest readership of any before us or currently, we wish you the safest and most treasured holiday season imaginable. Living

Trends, Misconceptions, and the Rewards of Real Estate BY STEVEN CHAN

K

nowing a fair amount about real estate, I probably should have bought more and sold less, but these aren’t my words; I’m parroting what others have said and I have learned through association. From the many real estate brokers I’ve worked with including a friend who holds a Ph.D. in economics and has spent his career as an ‘expert witness’ evaluating company assets at the corporate level, all agree, real estate is a wise investment; and when well planned, it can be one of the most valuable and flexible assets in a portfolio. In today’s housing market, some investors are hesitant to leap, either due to a significant increase in mortgage rates or the steady growth of properties reaching never-before-seen heights. Compounding the uncertainty, even when great opportunities present, such as an idyllic location, because New Englanders aren’t known for committing resources to update their homes and offices, new owners will need to invest thousands of dollars into remodeling after a purchase. Then, there are those who either don’t have a grasp on the concept of a free market or believe it’s their obligation to interfere with its natural progression. Many cities in the northeast, primarily those that enjoyed a heyday about 100 or more years ago, have supported the transformation of old mills, toxic sites, harbors, and, specifically, the SouthCoast of Massachusetts, where there’s reintroduction of an outdated mode of transportation. Even so, the efforts have been with good intentions; depressed areas are witnessing an improved quality of life. However, with this new-found comfort and enjoyment for citizens comes resistance to rewarding those investing. As silly as it sounds, small groups of resilient activists are looking for developers and small individual investors to buy and improve residential properties, only to turn around and demand they rent the units for less than market rate. arrive both to live and invest in the area. The result of the community’s desire to attract new blood causes a rise in the scale of economy, and though there is hope business owners will be willing to lose money, the cost of living ultimately finds its level regardless of outside influences. It’s no different than what occurs in the tony neighborhoods of the suburbs or major cities; when improvements are made, taxes go up, and the price of housing increases—it’s the law of the land, leaving everyone to decide what they can afford. Yes, housing is a right, but the choice of where, isn’t. Turning to the luxury market, many areas, especially those along the coast, have taken the breath away from the locals who

In today’s housing market, some investors are hesitant to leap, either due to a significant increase in mortgage rates or the steady growth of properties reaching never-before-seen heights.

seem to ruminate about how much the price of homes has risen; neglectfully, they fail to look over their shoulders and acknowledge the appreciation of their homes. Addressing real estate conditions from the SouthCoast of Massachusetts to the mountains of New Hampshire and beyond is less of a challenge than news reports would have you believe. As of today, inventories are historically low, and everyone is blaming the Fed for increasing rates. But did you know because of vast transfers of wealth—the boomers are flush with cash and passing it to their children; plus, the stock market has been kind to those with patience, resulting in affluent buyers turning away from traditional financial resources and making cash offers. Another issue related to current market conditions is that everyone jumped in at the same time, hoping to make a score. The result was many homeowners were priced out of the market, forcing them to pause and reflect on their next move. To offer perspective, let’s look at an area that went through a similar, but much more intensive uptick in property values over the last 10 years. Recently, a Marion home was put on the market, for just shy of $11 million. Gasps could be heard from afar and comments from every perspective billowed in real estate offices for miles around. Having toured the residence, guests’ quarters, and the private gated neighborhood filled with the most desirable amenities imaginable, I would have made an immediate offer if I had the funds; the home’s intrinsic value was unquestionable. 24 | DECEMBER 2023 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

During my discussion with the broker, we focused on a comparison, specifically, what an identical home on Long Island or other desirable location would be priced at; we use this estate as an example of what future demand might be because of its rarity, glorious history, location and breathtaking views, this would allow for an accurate representation to extrapolating appreciation. The property’s pristine interiors, exteriors, and landscape, make this one of the few homes found to be turn-key. Every system is state-of-the-art, with no expense spared. Tasteful and elegant, it is a retreat that is almost impossible to find! My estimate for a comparable home found in the Hamptons, Sag Harbor, Oyster Bay, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, or parts of the Cape, would be close to double this one, if not more. Plus, it won’t be long before its value will appreciate. It wouldn’t be unheard of if this home sees a price of $20+ million in a generation or less. Some may ask, “If it’s so great, why isn’t it sold?” My retort, “Excellent question!” What appears to be a decrease in homes available on the SouthCoast is caused by buyers coming from New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and California; they’ve created an overbought market. Additionally, International unrest, an uncertain economy, and plain fear have also influenced the slowdown we’re seeing; but beyond these distractions is the newness of the SouthCoast to those at a distance—it’s still being tested. We can look back at the private estate that once served as

the home of Col. Green in South Dartmouth. It had become a gated community, and the mansion was remodeled into condominiums. A local real estate agent and the developer tried their hardest to tease out traffic and find willing buyers. They ran ads in the local newspapers, hosted open houses, and sent mailers but found nothing worked. Desperate, they called a seasoned ‘ad guy’ who had just opened his office in the area. They met, and it wasn’t more

than a minute or two before he realized why their approach failed. He gently explained, “Your potential buyers don’t live here.” With this new-found knowledge, they hired him. Immediately an advertising campaign was pulled together, targeting New Yorkers and other high-income earners at a distance; all fitting a profile of buyers looking for property rarely available. Not long after the launch the project sold out and expanded to what it is today. The ad guy sold himself out of a job; new buyers went on to bring their friends to town and they too bought new units—the advertising campaign was a complete success. Today’s buyers are similar, but there are slight differences; local and regional families are moving up but facing a new crop of buyers during negotiations. Many are ‘high-flyers,’ going undetected—to and from the New Bedford airport; taking a quick look and leaving an offer, their names recognizable, they demand privacy and do their best to stay under the radar. With all things being equal, in the next 10 years, the prices you see now will be considered extremely reasonable and will result in hearing those overused words, “I should have bought when….” As for the surrounding areas, they got their wish; investment money is flowing, and the notion of cheap rents and homes is behind us—it’s how a free market works; it’s called progress. Intimacy

Curse or Self Imposed? BY STEVEN CHAN

T

he song attributed to Charles Hart, written by Roy Turk and Lou Handman in 1926, and recorded many times over by a list of artists, including the ‘King of Rock & Roll,’ Elvis Presley, “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” begs the question; “Are you?” In a recent Meta-Gallup poll of 140 countries, sans China, leaving the survey to include a sampling of about 77 percent of adults globally, it was determined that more than one billion people feel fairly or very lonely—which reflects the feelings of approximately one in four adults worldwide. These results probably mean that, for the most part, the global population is happy or at least too busy to worry about feelings of being unconnected. Notably, the research is timely; it was released on November 1, 2023. 34 | DECEMBER 2023 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Armed with this knowledge, the offices of the U.S. Surgeon General and the World Health Organization urge concern and call for a “much-needed global perspective of social well-being.” The study yields some unexpected results, predicting that as we age and face the loss of a spouse, family members, and friends, the pains of loneliness would begin to creep, while at the same time, younger participants with a presumably more extensive social network would rarely be lonesome, turned out not to be true. SAMPLE SIZE/RESULT

Based on surveys conducted from June 2022 to February 2023 of approximately 1,000 subjects from each country polled, Meta-Gallup claims: “17 percent of those aged 65+ reported being very or fairly lonely, compared to 27 percent

between the ages of 19-29 indicated experiencing the same feelings. At the same time, while concern has been focused on an elderly population, most participants aged 45+ say they never feel lonely, with less than 50 percent claiming loneliness of varying degrees.” Regarding gender differences, the study shows that loneliness between men and women (not our differentiation, but the researchers’) is about equal, with close to 24 percent of both sexes feeling very or fairly lonely. Although difficult to conclude, these results could be extrapolated and theorized to be closely associated with adverse physical and psychological outcomes, including premature mortality. Outside of the findings, undefined variables leave us to believe differences of being alone, isolated, and feelings of loneliness were accounted for and verified. What is inconclusive about the research is the relationship between loneliness and clinical diagnoses, such as depression, cognitive impairment, or other emotional deficits, questioning the etiology of feeling lonely. From the study, questions arise about generational differences. Social media, culture, and the pace of life are vastly different than years past, resulting in future work diving deeply into the reasons for feeling lonely and how they correlate to personality profiles and emotional states. Also, attributing to distress and difficulty in coping is

how we were instructed—even forced—into isolation and lockdown during the COVID pandemic, which has caused significant social problems, to the point the Surgeon General has declared loneliness and isolation an “Epidemic.” In a statement penned by the U.S. Surgeon General’s Agency Director, Dr. Vivek Murthy, “Our epidemic of loneliness and isolation has been an underappreciated public health crisis that has harmed individual and societal health. Our relationships are a source of healing and well-being hiding in plain sight— one that can help us live healthier, more fulfilled, and more productive lives. Given the significant health consequences of loneliness and isolation, we must prioritize building social connection the same way we have prioritized other critical public health issues such as tobacco use, obesity, and substance abuse disorders.” We live at an unyielding pace and are subsequently facing obstacles in conducting meaningful in-person contact; this, combined with a 24-hour, on-demand news cycle keeping the public focused on terror and other stress ladened reporting, continuously pressures audiences to pay attention to strife rather than personal satisfaction and building relationships with others. Ultimately, it is up to individuals to find pathways for developing interpersonal connections that fulfill the need for human connection. H

HYSTERIA

AN INVISIBLE INFLUENCE SHAPING OPINION

36 | DECEMBER 2023 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

W

BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, M.ED

ith the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East, we’ve all witnessed numerous vitriolic mass protests erupt here in the US and around the world. Much of the discourse surrounding the crisis stems from misinformation and denial of hard evidence relevant to both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian issue. History has shown that truth is often the first casualty of war, and this is only made worse when we remain complacent inside our information silos and consequent biases. In the end, innocent civilians on both sides will be displaced and pay the ultimate price at the hands of unaccountable government and corporate leaders, the result of self-interests. Much like the Ukraine conflict, it seems people’s opinions are being shaped by propaganda and gaslighting as a means to short-circuit critical thinking, sow division, and worsen mental health. America’s colleges and universities, where many domestic protests have occurred, are replete with young minds that are vulnerable to militant ideologies like that of Hamas. It also appears there may be many protestors under the influence of what seems to be mass hysteria. We’ve seen it before, hysterical people displaying emotional responses disproportionate to a situation. Such reactions are contagious, where people collectively experience emotional outbursts, hallucinations, and suggestibility. While the symptoms are thought to be physical in origin, they are psychological or social.1 At the convergence of psychology and sociology lies mass hysteria, also known as epidemic hysteria, mass sociogenic illness, or mass psychogenic illness. This reaction happens when these symptoms affect two or more people who believe in the same cause. Even though it’s psychosomatic, mass hysteria can lead to actual physical effects and severe mental distress. People typically believe there was a specific trigger for their symptoms. Yet, they don’t have any underlying condition that could be responsible for it; they wouldn’t normally act that way, and they may share an excessive fear of an inflated or non-existent threat.2, 3 One of the first known instances of mass hysteria was the infamous “dancing plague” that swept across Europe in the Middle Ages. In modern-day France, for example, from JulySeptember of 1518, an estimated 50-400 people fell victim to a case of “dancing mania,” where people danced together ceaselessly in a state of delirium for hours and days until collapsing. If they didn’t die of a stroke or heart attack, they would moan in agony on the ground, then get back up to resume their manic behavior once recovered. The most popular explanation NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | DECEMBER 2023 | 37

is a collective response to stress, though the behavior was said to stop after the dancers were made to pray for absolution. Fast forward to the COVID pandemic, some experts argue that repeated media broadcasting of worrisome information may have exacerbated negative public health effects and promoted mass hysteria. Such hysteria could have factored into policies misaligned with health recommendations. It is especially true when an authoritative body and politicized media promote negative information, when it’s reinforced on social media, and when it happens in a large society, where it will have longer-lasting effects.6 THE SPARK OF MASS HYSTERIA

The affliction can arise from groupthink when people quickly consent to popular opinion without doing their due diligence, derived from extreme stress or trauma, including collective trauma, and from social pressure to conform to the prevailing storyline.2 Frank Furedi, executive director of MCC Brussels (a European policy analysis group), believes “[a] new culture of groupthink is emerging, and it is causing mass psychosis.”7 Furedi explains that, in his mind, the most remarkable thing about the violent George Floyd protests was the speed at which every sector of society fell in line behind Black Lives Matter. Elite institutions, Hollywood, online influencers, churches, etc., all falling over themselves to be first in line to show their support and denounce anyone’s insensitive comments indicated feelings of losing public support if they didn’t react in such a manner. In this age of social media, Furedi points to children, like an 11-year-old he knows, who felt intense peer pressure to put a BLM hashtag on her Instagram posts. “When young children are faced with the demand to conform or else, it is clear that a powerful mood of illiberal intolerance is sweeping our societies.” Furedi says a person is free to speak out, but they’ll only be met with social acceptance if their position tows the party line. Discussion and debate aren’t allowed. Those who disagree with the narrative are silenced. He believes the intense worldwide pressure to conform wasn’t really about George Floyd’s murder; instead, it was a lingering effect of the pandemic and lockdown. Furedi says COVID isolation and its intensified “segregated identity bubbles” amplified pre-existing cultural trends and solidified societal polarization. Our growing intolerance has led to “an explosion of a new language of grievance” in the public square, fueled by mass media’s reinforcement of suffering and victimization. Floyd’s murder pulled the plug on pent-up anger and other negative emotions and resentments. Taken to an extreme, mass hysteria is a direct result of groupthink. Furedi says we witnessed white people taking to their knees, asking for forgiveness for their race, while others took to pulling down statues. We may be seeing similar societal effects playing a role in the protests surrounding the current crisis. The pandemic is still in the rearview mirror; there’s the added stress of persistent 38 | DECEMBER 2023 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

economic uncertainty; social media is ingrained in our way of life; and intolerance remains deeply entrenched, especially in the halls of higher learning. PROTECTING YOUR MIND FROM THE MASSES

Interestingly, a new study in Nature Communications provides evidence of how groupthink can spread through social networks and why large groups of people tend to think alike despite wide variability in how they perceive the world.8, 9 Researchers, including Berkeley Haas Assistant Professor, Douglas Guilbeault, who studies collective creativity and intelligence, categorization, and social media policy, created an online grouping game involving the categorization of shapes inside inkblots. Guilbeault and his colleagues observed that while there was significant variation in shapes identified by smaller groups and individuals, the predictability of the forms rose as group size increased. There was still identifiable variability in shapes being proposed in larger groups, but there was also more communication taking place, leading subjects to acquiesce to the more popular figures in a cascading effect. Such tending took place even when inkblots themselves varied. Guilbeault says unique perspectives are more likely to be adopted in a small group. Such an observation gives rise to the theory that mental contagion results as group size increases. The experiment shows that group size and communication could manipulate people’s decisions, but interestingly, researchers then snuck (ro)bots that had an agenda into the mix to gather more data. As a large number of bots consistently promoted an unpopular shape, human participants began accepting it. Once 37 percent of group members advocated for the unpopular image, that image was more likely to be adopted over images by the rest of the group. Group members were even likely to maintain support of the unpopular image (a sumo wrestler), even when later shown the popular interpretation of the inkblot, a crab. No one in the large groups without bots saw a sumo wrestler. Social media is a breeding ground for this type of phenomenon. Repetition of ideas pushed by real and automated users can sway opinion, says Guilbeault. He suggests the Trump presidency, in some ways, was a “war over categories,” and now everyone is battling over what should be deemed fake news. Experts say we can help prevent groupthink by always questioning the status quo and not being quick to agree.10 Mass hysteria can affect anyone in turbulent times, but it can be difficult to spot as it’s happening and no official treatment exists. Distancing oneself from the epicenter of activity can help, including any related news stories and social media that can intensify emotions. Stress reduction is essential amidst emotional turmoil. Psychotherapy is advisable as well. Constant crises can fuel mass hysteria, and it’s important to seek help if feeling overwhelmed.2, 3 If we don’t protect ourselves, Furedi foresees a dystopia in which the current climate of intolerance will overtake us and come to dictate what we say and think.

WHOSE REALITY?

It’s important to recognize and be wary of groupthink and social pressure on either side of any issue, lest we fail to see possible underlying causes and motives. Questions surround the official narrative of this Middle East war. Why, for example, did Israel ignore repeated warnings by Egypt of a significant and impending Hamas attack from Gaza— a tiny region already renowned for its heavy Israeli surveillance of the Palestinian movement?11 Furthermore, it is known that Hamas is an Israeli-created, US-backed intelligence asset that has long outlived its usefulness as a counter to the Palestinian Liberation

Organization (PLO), just as ISIS and Al-Qaeda were intelligence assets gone amuck.12-15 There are reasons why Hamas could now be a perfect enemy for political expediency.16 Note the predictive cover artwork of the 2012 Christmas issue of The Economist entitled “A Rough Guide to Hell.” At the top is an eerie depiction of a hang-gliding Hamas fighter battling a hang-gliding Benjamin Netanyahu.17 That this 11-year-old image aligns almost perfectly with the bizarre motorized paraglider attack by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023, cannot be dismissed as mere happenstance. From a prestigious publication notorious for cryptic forecasts of world events, are we seeing reality imitating art or art conjuring reality? Either way, the implications should give pause to any thinking person. Note, too, that the common retort “conspiracy theory” was itself designed for groupthink, made popular for promoting conformity to the official explanation of President John F. Kennedy’s tragic demise.18 We must remain objective and realize there’s always a ‘back story.’ Perhaps now more than ever, we should set aside our political leanings and cognitive biases, if only for the untold thousands who will be written off as collateral damage. Blurred Lines O B SERVING T R U TH BY STEVEN CHAN

L

ife has become reminiscent of a menu at a lousy restaurant. You’re out with guests, and no matter how many times you peruse the evening’s selections, you don’t find anything appealing. But regardless of your indecisiveness, you realize that soon, you’ll need to make a selection and opt for the least offensive dish to carry you through the event. Flipping to a similar scenario, deciding which news story you’ll pay attention to—regardless of the media outlet presenting it—can also be a challenge. As you know, it’s crucial to be informed of current events and aware of their effect on your life and that of your family, friends, and neighbors. Not wanting to face the emotional strain and impact that comes with conflict about the economy, politics, war, the breakdown of civility, social values, and culture, you hold your nose and take a small spoon of facts and a taste of opinions that have taken over what is supposed to be news. It’s a bitter taste, but you digest as much as possible, hoping it won’t keep you up late into the night. As we approach the most joyous season of the year, we cannot ignore the

troubles here and afar. All very serious and with grave consequences, their tally delivers massive uncertainty and insecurity as we prepare for 2024. We’re witnessing the sins of society; they’re not new phenomena; they’ve always been present—but under wraps. The difference today is that those who climb upon a soap box (or monument) claim to be absolved of hate, racism, intolerance, bigotry, antisemitism and open to free speech—because of their advanced understanding of values and the importance of eliminating history, are the same individuals who expose themselves for who they have always been, their impulses—impossible to control—are tied to the expressions they project to others. At the same time, while preaching inclusion, equity, and equality, they show extreme intolerance and disregard for other’s opinions and voices. On a positive note, we’re seeing a deconstruction of ideology, which has been the foundation for the turmoil and violence over the years. Those having little in common are forced to join in combating the reactions of these modernday revolutionaries. Finally, bright minds with different social agendas agree that many ill-prepared citizens have

been played as pawns, gullible activists allowing themselves to be controlled by forces with a destructive agenda. Reactions by those once miles apart on nearly every social issue are joining in calling out those invoking violence and terror on the streets in public and private settings and at the false equivalent of ‘elite’ universities. The construct for achieving change through hate and violence is flawed; spawned by a denial of truth and an amalgamation of distortions, the larger public has the enlightening experience of viewing the misguided, privileged, and self-righteous to submerge themselves in a cesspool of hypocrisy. The fabric of society is strained and is felt by all. Influence peddling, manipulation, and the funding of radicalism on our shores have altered the face of America. We’re experiencing detriments of social engineering by a non-resident billionaire whose last hurrah is to divide and dismantle a society’s meritocracy with nepotistic socialism. Pointing out the nation’s direction serves as an opportunity to reflect upon where a speeding pendulum is carrying us; it also helps to decide where mistakes have been made and how to correct them. Gotcha! Submitted by New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella’s office, edited by New England News + Media

ith all the concern and focus on the southern border, the one north also seems to be full of holes and is a hotbed of illegal activity. But, with a Whitehouse spinning in circles, resembling the “Gang that couldn’t shoot straight,” New Hampshire Governor Christopher T. Sununu, Attorney General John M. Formella, and New Hampshire Department of Safety Commissioner Robert L. Quinn have announced the establishment of the Northern Border Alliance Task Force composed of State, county, and local law enforcement officers. The purpose of creating a team of professional law enforcement members is to conduct patrols along the northern border and reduce instances of crimes and illicit activity, respond to all threats and hazards, collect and share information, and act upon criminal intelligence. The Task Force will also cooperate, as needed, with federal law officers to enforce federal criminal immigration laws; which up to now have not been enforced to any meaningful degree, leaving citizens unsafe. The Department of Safety will fund the Northern Border Alliance Task Force, awarding a $1,435,384 grant managed by the New Hampshire State Police, Forest Rangers, and Fish and Game Department, along with county and local law enforcement agencies. These funds will support those who patrol areas within 25 air miles from the Canadian border. “The Federal Government refuses to

take action on our Northern Border,” said Governor Chris Sununu. “They cut funding, limited our resources, and have thrown their hands up. Without adequate federal support, the State is stepping up. Encounters with individuals on the terrorist watch list at the Land Border Ports of Entry along the northern border have doubled since 2017. This is in stark contrast to what we are seeing on the southern border, where Land Border Port of Entry encounters have decreased during that same time period. In fact, just this year, 85 percent of all land border encounters with individuals on the terrorist watchlist occurred on the northern border—while only 15 percent occurred on the southern border. In meeting with local law enforcement up north, it is clear we need more targeted resources.” “Our aim is to increase the presence and effectiveness of law enforcement in northern New Hampshire, particularly in communities in close proximity to the Canadian border. Given the rural nature, expansive geography, and sparse population of northern Coos County, local law enforcement resources are extremely limited,” said Attorney General Formella. “The increase in personnel provided by the Northern Border Alliance Program and Task Force

will add 10 thousand patrol hours near the border through June 30, 2025. This [effort] will shorten response times to calls for service in the region, increase the effectiveness of crime detection and prevention in a remote area of the State, and enhance border security efforts.” Participating law enforcement officers will be vested with the authority and jurisdiction, within 25 air miles from the Canadian border, to: (1) enforce all state criminal laws and (2) cooperate with federal law enforcement officers in preventing and detecting crime and apprehending criminals, including those who have committed federal immigration-related crimes. RSA 21-M:3-b; RSA 106-B:11; 8 U.S.C. § 1357 (g) (10). In addition, because the participating officers will be working as part of an Attorney General task force, local and county officers who participate in the task force will be entitled to the same legal advice and protections afforded to State officials. The first phase of the Northern Border Alliance Task Force will begin immediately with participation from the State Police. The second phase started when the Northern Border Alliance Program rules became effective on November 16 after a meeting of the Joint Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules. On Point

Poor Judgement Reigns In And Out Of The Classroom It Appears Performance Is The Issue

T

BY JAMES HOLDEN

here’s been a whole lot of controversy about story hours for young children hosted by drag queens—are we allowed to call them that? Yes, it’s been happening and making news; parents are in an uproar about school districts setting the stage for performers to act out various skits and displays, sometimes without parental notice or the option to pull their child from the festivities. At the same time, teachers are shying away from educating young minds with the essentials for a productive life and opting to use graphic photos and language to explain sexuality that is much more advanced

48 | DECEMBER 2023 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

than their innocent minds are prepared to understand. School boards mandate these decisions, and if questionable programming occurs, we have to assume local boards have the community’s blessing or rely on ignorance and are subverting the truth by not disclosing their teaching plans. There have been reports of vocal parents being arrested for attempting to voice their outrage, while at the same time, a few school boards have been relinquished of their duties. But this isn’t today’s story, and it’s only the proverbial ‘tip of the iceberg’ when outing the outrageous behavior of ‘bad-apple’ educators. From what teachers tell us, one would believe they hold themselves to a higher standard and take responsibility for oversight of their classrooms. With parents’ trust, they are expected to demonstrate resolve in keeping order, showing respect, and expecting the same from students. They also have the job of setting hard-fast boundaries. Because of their supervisory role and a more visible public profile than other professions, one would expect an exaggerated degree of respectability in both their public and private lives—it’s an indication of a person’s core values and serves as an example to their students, colleagues and the community at large. If you haven’t noticed, culture has moved in the direction of disrespect for authority, marked with violence and social unrest, making a teacher’s job more complex than ever before. It’s hard to believe parents would be opposed to cutting them slack; they deserve it, but it’s not because they work half a year and make a full-time salary—they knew what they were getting into; still, the stress of around 30 hyperactive kids would drive anyone crazy, and so they are sometimes given a pass for minor infractions. Astonishingly, we get regular news feeds about serious and outrageous breaches of trust in and out of the

classroom, and needless to say, it’s been going on for years in a town like yours—often unnoticed—however, it is now as commonplace as every week. Recently, a Maryland middle school teacher was arrested and accused of giving alcohol and drugs to a young boy who was 14 years old at the time—she was 22, and then it was alleged she had sex more than 20 times with the student at the school, her home, and other locations—including in public spaces.

It would appear the education departments across the county need to do better screening and install advanced monitoring systems so parents can be assured their children’s teachers can determine right from wrong and abide by a set of standards and principles.

At some point after her indiscretions, with the boy, local police believe she left the Montgomery County School and was employed nearby; it’s thought she may have participated in similar sexual events with other underage students. Maryland police are asking anyone who may have been a victim or have information about other assaults to come forward. Now 31 years old, a warrant was recently issued for her arrest on multiple counts of sexual abuse. Once notified, the teacher turned herself in to authorities and is awaiting trial. Other questionable actions by a minority of educators are routinely discovered when they attempt to supplement their incomes with explicit career choices. A few weeks ago, a major network announced a teacher from Missouri was placed on leave, only to resign when

the school system learned of her work as a performer on the site known as OnlyFans, which is basically a porn site where entertainers get paid for sexual acts, alone, sometimes with others—you get the drift. The 28-year-old English teacher from the St. Louis area said she had almost made $1 million from her x-rated activities and blamed having to take on a part-time job because of the burden of student loans— seems like a lot of schooling! The article indicated the sexy teacher has a “master’s degree in education and was working on a third degree.” She appears to be very bright—and motivated. It seems a few adults—possibly parents, hopefully not students— stumbled on the accused OnlyFans page (they must have been hacked), where she was found displaying a host of unique talents. The school district was alerted, and she was questioned about her newly found activities. The news report stated that when confronted about her side job, the woman attempted to justify her evening and weekend work by claiming it was on her personal time and separate from her professional life at school. She also complained about her meager teaching salary of $42,000 for part-time work. She no longer works at the high school, leaving the question, “Would you want this woman teaching your children and responsible for their welfare when you’re not around?” Making good decisions has always been believed to be a learned trait that doesn’t have an on/off switch; either you understand the result of your actions, or you don’t. Being able to face problems and create acceptable solutions is part of becoming an adult. It would appear the education departments across the county need to do better screening and install advanced monitoring systems so parents can be assured their children’s teachers can determine right from wrong and abide by a set of standards and principles. In Closing

The Pain & Pleasure Of Air Travel hile closing this issue, we received a request for a subscription to one of our magazines, and though it’s not unusual—we get many each day; this one caused excitement because it was from Hawaii! After a quick laugh and a burst of curiosity about who they visited and where and how they found one or more of our issues, the conversation turned to thoughts of beautiful beaches, clear blue water, and a welcomed break— no one could resist the opportunity to talk travel! Of course, the customary banter about the island attraction and its position on most everyone’s bucket list followed, along with a conversation about fears of flying. Well, not the actual concerns about a plane’s integrity, but the outrageous stories of passengers and even pilots’ bizarre behavior. Once upon a time, flying was sophisticated and reserved for a few who could afford to lift off. Many, if not most passengers, conducted themselves appropriately, appearing in outfits required at fine dining restaurants. In return, they were treated with extreme courtesy by flight crews who were impeccably dressed, followed a strict code of conduct, and had a pleasant physical appearance. But something happened along the way; when dress codes were relaxed, as was social etiquette, and the cost of a plane ticket dramatically reduced, air travel was akin to a bus ride in the sky, no longer exclusive or pleasurable. There isn’t a day that goes by without a news report of horrific behavior and terrifying events taking place thousands of feet above. Appalling, though sometimes humorous, stories about adults acting out or hyperactive children with ADHD and a considerable dose of entitlement stir 50 | DECEMBER 2023 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

concerns for one’s safety and sanity. Recently, and you’re probably aware of the report explaining how an experienced commercial pilot decided to load up on hallucinogenic mushrooms—before taking a flight—was seated on the flight deck with his active duty colleagues when he attempted to down the plane filled with 86 passengers. Luckily, the Captain and crew stopped the off-duty pilot from completing his death wish and subdued him until landing. Weeks later, he went public with a story—with a sexual tone, but not specific. At press time, he remains under arrest for the attempted murder of 86 passengers. Keep watch; in this day and age, he may be back in those ‘friendly skies’ with a slap on the wrist. What you didn’t hear was approximately a week prior, on a different airline, an on-duty pilot authorized to carry a weapon held the Captain and crew hostage while pointing his gun at them, demanding they not re-route the flight due to a passenger emergency or he would shoot them, exercising common sense, the pilot took back control of the plane and continued to its destination, where the ‘Cowboy Pilot’ was taken into custody. As for the back of the plane, it too

resembles the ‘Wild West.’ Drunken, unstable, and obnoxious passengers duke it out regularly, and half of the offenders are women! Reports of passengers attempting to open doors, having sex in the bathrooms, leaving trails of excrement in aisles, and senseless acts of violence towards each other are all too familiar, instilling a fear of flying in many travelers. After considering options, two come to mind: drive to your destination and increase your chances of survival (although statistics don’t agree with this proposal), or book business or first-class passage since you rarely hear stories about these folks getting into brawls. Then there’s the issue of a bedbug infestation worldwide and newly activated warning of caution to US travelers planning to visit nearly 50 countries. These issues bring to mind an anecdote among sailors who have noticed the trampling of tranquility while enjoying the ocean. When entering a favorite anchorage or harbor formally known as a retreat for peace and relaxation, only to find a lack of consideration, privacy, and noise, it’s assured someone on deck brings levity to the situation with the comment, “Boating isn’t expensive enough.” Perhaps air travel can be salvaged, but clearly, for a price.
