San Miguel School In Providence, Rhode Island Receives Key Grant From BayCoast Bank

South Coast LGBTQ+ Network Receives Grant From BayCoast Bank For New Community Center

T

nspiring a culture of belonging is essential in today’s changing world. Schools are places where students need to feel seen, heard, and valued for who they are and the unique talents and interests they bring to the table. Positive educational experiences impact a child’s life not just today but for years.

For these reasons, BayCoast Bank has announced a grant to the San Miguel School in Providence, Rhode Island, supporting their efforts to strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the classroom.

“The grant from BayCoast gives us the opportunity to work with a professional DEI expert to delve deeply into topics

that impact our school and programs.

While we are confident that our school model works, we strive to always be learning how we can do things even better,” said Mel Bride, Director of Development at San Miguel School of Providence.

“Lynn Bowman, an experienced teacher and administrator, has been selected to fill this vital role,” said Bride. “Having her at San Miguel School will be important for the young men in our care as well as for their teachers and families. Our goal is to be the most welcoming and supportive place we can be by recognizing where we are strong and where we may be falling short from an equity perspective.”

Providing a high-quality, holistic education for boys from diverse and challenging backgrounds is the mission of The San Miguel School, which currently serves 64 students in grades 5-8 and has over 350 alumni.

“We are thrilled to provide this important $30,000 grant to the San Miguel School,” said Nicole Almeida, Senior Vice President, Chief Diversity Officer for BayCoast Bank. “Learning about our differences allows students to explore perspectives and opinions they may not have otherwise considered, giving them an opportunity to think critically and examine the world in fresh new ways. This lays the foundation for meaningful conversations, which can foster stronger relationships and understanding.” H

he ability to realize one’s full potential—without limitation—is critical in today’s world, and due to these sentiments, BayCoast Bank has announced the South Coast LGBTQ+ Network (The Network) is the beneficiary of a $300,000 grant for the development of a new Community Center in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

The development of The Network’s new Community Center is the culmination of a monumental goal—to strengthen the organization’s commitment to the most vulnerable in the LGBTQ+ community while bringing all people together in a

welcoming space that promotes peace, understanding, and unity.

“Given the extreme challenges the LGBTQ+ community faces today, our goal to create a safe, inclusive, and permanent space where LGBTQ+ individuals can thrive in the South Coast is more important than ever,” said Andy Pollock, President of The South Coast LGBTQ+ Network. “With the generous support of BayCoast Bank, we are closer to seeing a dream come true.”

The new Community Center will offer mental health and wellness programs, professional development, and financial literacy training for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Educational services relating to diversity, equality, and inclusion will also be offered to local organi-

zations to promote respect and awareness.

“BayCoast Bank is proud to support the South Coast LGBTQ+ Network and its commitment to improving lives,” said Julie Ramos Gagliardi, First Vice President, Corporate Giving and Community Relations for BayCoast Bank. “The new Community Center will help those who are most vulnerable get the support they need and deserve, without having to travel to Boston or beyond for these essential services.”

The historic building purchased to house The Network’s new LGBTQ+ Community Center was originally constructed in 1908 and is currently undergoing significant renovations to become a contemporary, better-equipped space.

e were spoiled last month, the weather was hot, and many found the heat wave pleasurable. For those in disbelief, during the next snow storm of 2023, while clearing your vehicle of rain-soaked slush, consider how nice it would be to transported to the balmy days of August for a couple of hours. Nothing is ideal; adaptation is the best and often the only choice in the face of adversity.

We face many unknowns when on September 22, summer officially ends and autumn begins.

Specifically, we’ve come to enjoy the return to normal routines and the pleasure of highly-charged social events, which had been removed from our lives for an unbearable time.

As the weather cools and more time is spent indoors, new threats of public health hazards are real and serve as a warning.

The high we’re coming off could result in a protracted return of unthinkable consequences.

First, new variants of COVID continue to be passed around, and while not as lifethreatening as the original, it is the most contagious and continues taking lives.

But, it is not to be ignored; a potential resurgence is possible.

Another threat to our health is the introduction of monkeypox. The World Health Organization has declared the disease a global health emergency, perhaps a health crisis. In mid-August, reports of the polio virus being detected and “likely” spreading around New York City, flooded the news cycle. Usually detected in wastewater, a case of a man contracting the disease in Rockland county, N.Y. and New Bedford, M.A. has been recorded.

Of more serious concern, health officials believe that each case confirmed is only the tip of the iceberg of actual infections.

This knowledge shows that we are not out of the “woods,” a reprieve—yes.

The sooner we become aware of ignorance’s unintended consequences, the bet-

ter prepared we’ll be for an unpredictable winter season.

So much for our public service announcement; what’s in store for this month?

For September, we reflect on tradition; features you’ll find this month include a magnificent historical home in Falmouth, Massachusetts, a stunning garden in Newport, Rhode Island, the ancient sport of hunting on horseback, entrepreneurial ambition that has the USA and Great Britain reaching across the high-seas, and the creative interests of a film legend.

t may be one of New England’s most iconic yet unusual gardens. Located in Newport, Rhode Island, the grounds high above the ocean on Beacon Hill, is where Commodore Arthur Curtiss and Harriet Parsons James enlisted the help of the Olmsted Brothers in 1908 to create an enchanting oasis of peace and relaxation.

An outdoor venue, the Blue Garden design incorporated shallow pools, lily ponds, marble structures, sculpture, an abundance of flora, and a deep-green lawn.

At the turn of the century (19111913), work was completed, encompassing a plethora of details that would visually and physically penetrate all the human senses.

Granite columns and low walls surrounded the area, hidden behind lush green trees, enveloped into a tranquil setting of privacy and security.

conscientious; at Mrs. James’s direction, various shades of purple and blue flowers, tiles, and accents melded together, creating a unique palette of colors, textures, shapes, and an unexpected surprise upon entering.

After the project’s completion, the couple threw a gala for an estimated 300 people on August 15, 1913; it was celebrated as “The Masque of the Blue Garden.” Guests were treated to music and dance, and according to written accounts, Amphitrite, the Greek sea goddess, rose from a giant seashell as part of the evening’s entertainment.

When Curtiss and James passed in 1941, efforts to maintain the Garden faltered. Their once nearby mansion-home was destroyed by fire in 1967. The neglect resulted in nature taking back what it had owned, causing the Blue Garden to become encased with thicket and uncontrollable growth, which camouflaged the once beautiful setting.

In 2012, philanthropist Dorrance Hamilton activated the Blue Garden

restoration effort. Working from archived plans and images found at the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site in Brookline, Massachusetts, contractors and landscape architects began to recreate the once glorious garden estate.

The work required for such a monumental restoration and rehabilitation is unfathomable to repeat but well documented in the book, The Blue Garden: Recapturing an Iconic Newport Landscape

by Landscape Historian Arleyn Levee.

In August 2012, the new re-invented Blue Garden hosted a party; guests witnessed a celebration of restoration and preservation for a new generation’s understanding of how transforming the environment into an art form can be completed with both refinement and grandeur.

Today, visitors are enamored by the reconstructed project’s startling details; low walls, lush plantings, and raised pergolas, offer dramatic views of the site.

The pools filled with crystal clear water reflect brilliantly off the blue tiles at their base, accented by fountain jets gently delivering effervescent beads of activity and sound to the Garden. Colors abound and practically sparkle in contrast to the surrounding greenery and the subtle whites that enhance the field of blue and purple hues.

VISITING

Tours are guided, but guests are free to walk the Garden unescorted. Groups meet at the greenhouse and are shown a short film on the history of the Blue Garden, then proceed to the entrance. “Photography is permitted and encouraged,” according to ticket terms and conditions.

The Blue Garden has limited access but allows for personalized visits. For the remainder of 2022, the grounds are open through October 6, but only on Thursdays; tours are scheduled for 11 a.m., 12:30, and 2:00 p.m., with reservations. o one is immune to the bludgeoning efforts of social media and reality television to alter a willing public’s consciousness.

It’s evident the whipping into compliance with unachievable expectations has become a frenzy of selfies, postings, and gaining access to events. It has also caused millions of people to examine and evaluate their popularity among peers, but worse, to place an obscure quotient on their intrinsic value.

Unless you’re self-actualized and don’t care, exist outside social media channels, or ignore the hype and are unwilling to acknowledge a phenomenon occurring at a pace never seen before, your popcultural intellect might come across as intolerant to others.

Today, children, their parents—even grandparents are resistant to falling into a pedestrian lifestyle reminiscent of previous generations and are opting for the fast lane of social standing and public approval.

What’s left is to be separated into two loosely formed clusters; the pseudo-famous who appear to be living it up while burying their insecurities or struggling emotionally, resulting from comparisons created by fallacies or exaggerated events, and those who, in fact, have the incredible life they share online.

This phenomenon is not gendered and has been conspicuously driven by the entertainment business for personal gain.

CHANGING ROLES

If you haven’t noticed, what permeates the new society is a seismic shift in performance and endurance in education, careers, and social acuity.

For years, women who felt like secondclass citizens now realized former social norms and expectations imposed upon them were societal anchors, holding them in positions they dreaded.

IDYLLIC BLINDERS

Throughout history, women had been indoctrinated to believe they were to be subordinate and supportive to their life partners regardless of how they were treated. Indicative of these claims was science pointing to genetic predisposition and hormonal compounds responsible for aggression and protection by males and maternal behavioral instincts exhibited by females.

This argument is difficult to defend because learning a role and having ambition are not mutually exclusive; being charged with household duties is nothing more than control.

We should not misinterpret this optic; women have excelled at making countless

contributions to a better society; they’ve had to fight for equality, and now in 2022, a subtle evolution is taking place.

BRAINS & BEAUTY

The above subhead should not be taken as a slight; instead, it serves as an introduction to data demonstrating the construction of a historical foundation for change.

In a piece, “More Women Than Men Are Going to College. That May Change the Economy,” by Justin Wolfer (New York Times - November 23, 2021) discusses the differences between women and men setting off to school.

The writer reported, “It’s the result of a decades-long trend, in which women

have not only closed the historical gender gap in educational attainment but have surpassed the college-going rates of men.

And that trend doesn’t appear to be slowing down: The latest enrollment numbers for spring 2021 show a record gap between the sexes.”

The ramifications have already been felt by such a change because not only are women graduating, many decide to do post-graduate work or start careers which stalls the proverbial “clock,” resulting in fewer marriages and babies.

At the same time, according to The NPD Group, reporting on the US pres-

tige beauty industry, sales reached $22 billion in 2021, which showed an increase of 30 percent over 2020, with fragrances up 49 percent, hair products rising to 47 percent, with makeup and skincare 23 percent and 18 percent respectively.

Such trends indicate a sense of independence, self-sufficiency, and a willingness to enhance beauty, a marker for attraction. However, the data allows pause and questions not whether the modern woman wants or needs a man but the quality and timing.

Women are hedging their bets, entering medicine, law, and technology, creating

cutting-edge software, and building companies that require focus and dedication.

With such rewards comes new choices and opportunities which have turned the table on men.

We’re witnessing a pivot in relationships; women are no longer concerned about finding an ordinary ‘breadwinner’; they are already successful, so when they’re ready, the search will be for someone viewed with a higher ranking in emotional, intellectual, and educational fitness than in the past.

THE DISASSEMBLED MALE

It is just what it sounds like; men have become the recipients of change, not by willingness but by default. They have been trending in a direction that hasn’t kept pace with the drive and fortitude women possess.

Relying on past training and early life experiences and skills, many men find they don’t dovetail with the expectations of today’s contemporary woman.

Interactions between the sexes, socially and professionally, are constantly in flux; mutual respect has become a prerequisite and necessary if a conversation is to commence and continue.

Recent research shows that men face unprecedented obstacles like rejection and loneliness at increased rates. At the same time, many appear unwilling to relinquish social strength and the procurement of the opposite sex.

PANDEMIC INFLUENCE

Pre-COVID, writers, bloggers, and influencers contributed to the conversation online, often giving a forum to address frustration and solace for countless others. It was steadily growing but was more in tune with a party atmosphere.

But, when forced into isolation, time became a catalyst for change; with more hours spent researching and sharing, many concluded that being alone—while challenging, isn’t impossible to endure.

new breed of women, some who are selfmade billionaires and have the ability and communication channels to trickle down a message, ‘You can do this too!’

The good news is that many women have found their way to living extraordinary lives and making valuable contributions to themselves, deserving organizations, and individuals; they should be complimented for sharing their rewards.

Unfortunately, the confounding advice from a small percentage of highly visible personalities is that everyone deserves an exclusive lifestyle. However, without personal wealth, many will seek unsuitable-even questionable financial support, which contradicts the movement and the effort to become independent.

QUALITY VERSUS QUANTITY

Surrounded by COVID, we found ourselves alone, yet we could generate internal strength; we also recognized that men and women are not emotionally indifferent during a crisis, and reactions were similar.

The leveling of sexes was well on its way.

NEWLY ACQUIRED AFFLUENCE

Success, luxury, opportunity—and yes, even earned privilege never goes silent. By its very nature, those who have achieved objectives often flaunt and share their good fortune, and what better way than online?

The luxury lifestyle market is at an all-time high, with no end in sight; top restaurants are booming, the finest hotels and resorts are filled, and premium brands fly off the shelves. It’s almost comical that opulence abounds while inflation and a recession are sturdily in place.

ontemporary society places keen importance on performance art, and while many venues offer outstanding artists in a wide array of settings, one that has both fascinated and kept us following their amazing calendar, year after year, are the extraordinary efforts by the non-profit volunteer board of the Concerts at the Point organization.

The engagement of spectators, riders, volunteers, and the press is primarily due to high-brow protocol and pedantry, much of which is found during the days leading up to a “Hunt Fixture,” commonly referred to as the event and ending with a social and meal.

I

t has been categorized as a cruel and vicious sport; in ancient Rome and surrounding countries, dogs were used to track game. Then in 1534, English farmers began hunting foxes as a pest control. According to Jane Ridley, Fox Hunting (HarperCollins, October 1990), “The last wolf in England was killed in the early 16th century during the reign of Henry VII, leaving the English fox with no threat from larger predators. The first use of dog packs specifically trained to hunt foxes was in the late 1600s, with the oldest fox hunt being, probably, the Bilsdale in Yorkshire.”

The practice was banned in Scotland in 2002, yet, still practiced in Northern Ireland, Australia, Canada, France, and parts of the United States.

Elsewhere, and what we relied upon for this work, is a modern code of ethics involving tradition, attire, and the camaraderie found in current models of fox hunting. We focus on the participation of riders and the attractiveness to the spectator’s willingness to engage by enjoying a day of following the riders and hounds.

Fox hunting and the accoutrements that place it as a highvalue status symbol continue to be relevant to club members and clubs, many of which are located along the wealthiest communities of the East Coast—particularly in New England, New York, and New Jersey.

Surprisingly, a few notable men and women have placed the fox hunting society high on their social calendars. A few recognizable names on the exclusive list include America’s first President and elite politicians on both sides of the aisle; each has hosted a post-hunt dinner at their homes in Washington, D.C. A great deal of time goes into the preparation of readying the dogs, equipment, and horses, but most importantly, negotiating the use of lands for the sport.

Often, clubs will have found favor with families that own a continuum of fields, forests, and even beaches, which make riding and following a formation exciting and enjoyable.

From experience, the more cultured events have scents carefully placed in advance of the scheduled hunt. While live animals are not purposefully utilized, a rare showing of a curious animal can cause havoc on a choreographed day.

It is only natural to enjoy a day in the wild with the added benefit of watching horses gallop, jump, splash through rivers, or wade along the coast. The thrill is never-ending and is as close as many will ever get to meeting and discussing elements of the sports with its athletes. ecently, Julian Fellowes, the Oscar, and Emmy-winning writer, director, producer, novelist, actor, and creator of Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age, spent a few days meeting with the media, visitors of the “cottages,” and fans, who lined up for an exquisite evening of cocktails on the terrace, and dinner at Breakers Great Hall.

Lord Fellowes engaged in a wide variety of subject matter; his audiences were thrilled to see the larger-than-life figure they imagined being so approachable and attentive to their questions.

Each event allowed Lord Fellowes to share his incredible talent and insight; his free-flowing narratives provided a view into his creative and thoughtful character creation and scene development for the period productions he is responsible for bringing to millions of viewers.

In hindsight, perhaps the most enlightening comments expressed by Newport’s guest of honor were when he engaged in a panel discussion with Ms. Trudy Coxe, CEO, and Executive of The Preservation Society of Newport County, and Mr. Steven Feinberg, Executive at the Rhode Film & TV Office, at a preview press conference.

The morning began with an acknowledgment of the formidable effort to court film producers and production companies to select a city like Newport to share a prestigious role in the entertainment industry. There is also the logistics nightmare of planning travel, entertainment, and accommodations for productions of such vast scale, as well as the minutia that can alter an entire contract by a mere misstep. It was satisfying to learn about the able-bodied people of Rhode Island, its political representatives, and the thousands of people who touched the work of Lord Fellowes’s tales in some manner; we are pleased to report they accomplished the task in “Bristol fashion.”

We also learned how Lord Fellowes viewed those living within the confines of wealth and privilege during the 1880s in New York and their summers in Newport.

For example, he detailed the delicate issue of divorce during the time and the necessity of arranging marriages that wouldn’t succumb to failure; the thought of losing social status and becoming an outcast haunted women of the time and had to be avoided at all cost.

Lord Fellowes delved into his belief that the best way to portray how a person’s life was impacted during any historical period is through drama. Be-

ing sensitive to what some might point out as a “sentence” of servitude, he explained his efforts to identify their struggles and pain through realistic scenes and dialogue.

Moving into social issues, he highlighted the lack of women’s rights at the time and the struggles found within the episodes of The Gilded Age series. To his credit, Lord Fellowes spoke to the evolution of societal norms and unacceptable behavior between the wealthy of England and the United States. Focusing on the powerlessness of wives compared to their industrialists’ husbands, we learn the naked truth as it is exposed by the artful use of conversation and actions throughout the series. In retrospect, the prolific writer successfully demonstrates how the rich women were reduced to overseeing household staff, gaming their status, only to be frustrated by not being treated as equals.

Interestingly, there seemed to be hints of future stories on the horizon. And while nothing is definitive, the bait has been cut, causing eyes to search for a future saga of how The Gilded Age influenced our lives and possibly progressing to the start of women’s independence as the century closed. A

nthony Quinn was born to extreme poverty in Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1915 to a half-Irish father and a Mexican-Indian mother. He grew up in El Paso, Texas, and later moved to East Los Angeles, C.A. There, Quinn experienced prejudice that followed him through most of his early movie career, which began in 1936.

He was typecast into roles of bad guys and gangsters, but it didn’t dissuade him; he was extraordinarily accomplished and possessed natural talent, leaving him to feel he didn’t need to learn acting.

Once recognized in roles beyond villains, he uprooted to New York City to study at The Actors Studio and do stage work.

He followed Marlon Brando’s footsteps as Stanley Kowalski in, A Street Car Named Desire, first on Broadway and then on tour.

After four years of intense training and study, he earned the respect of film and theater director Elia Kazan, who cast him in the 1952 film, Viva Zapata!; Quinn’s first Academy Award. In his 65year career as an actor, he was nominated and won many awards; notably two Oscars, an Emmy, and the Golden Globe Cecil’s B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award.

Beyond his incredible talent as an actor, his first love was making art—to express himself. At the age of six, he painted, sculpted and sketched movie stars he would see when his father, a movie cinematographer, brought him to work. Quinn mailed one such

drawing to Douglas Fairbanks, who returned the favor with a check for a then remarkable figure of $25.

At nine years old, he entered a California statewide competition with a plaster bust of Abraham Lincoln, and won the contest. In high school, his architectural drawings allowed him to meet Frank Lloyd Wright. Appreciating the young artist’s work and ambition, Wright instructed him to improve his speech if he wanted to be successful. Quinn took his advice and had his frenulum operated on and rehabilitated with speech classes, which led him to acting classes, paid for by working as a janitor.

Throughout his life, and every day on a movie set or backstage, Quinn made it a point to sketch or sculpt. But it wasn’t until the 1980’s that he realized he could turn his love for art into a career, and he began exhibiting his work. His Monumental Works, maquettes interpreted into large bronze and steel sculptures he patinated or painted, was unveiled and exhibited in Paris in 1992 in the courtyard of the Plaza Athene. The works then traveled to Vienna, Austria, and were later displayed at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He had nearly two dozen exhibitions before he passed away in 2001.

Quinn’s breadth of interests crosses many mediums, from drawings and painting to sculptures with wood and stone; his collection, now at his home in Bristol, Rhode Island, is dutifully being cataloged and organized by his wife, Katherine Benvin Quinn. During his career, the actor/artist completed over 5,000 works, a feat that points to an inexhaustible enjoyment of creativity. According to Katherine, Quinn found beauty in everything, everywhere he looked, and his joy was infectious. It is felt his work as an artist has not been given its due, but Katherine is striving to rectify the situation.

Quinn’s lifetime of work fills the stables at the coastal estate where they are now stored. Katherine and Anthony (Tony, as she fondly refers to him) wanted to find a home together. After an extensive search, the couple moved to Bristol, Rhode Island in 1994, with their one-year-old daughter Antonia. Quinn wanted a ranch-style house, room for his art, and a desire to be close to the ocean; as chance would have it, they found a 23-acre site with a barn and views of Narragansett Bay and Bristol Harbor; it was the perfect fit. Two years later, they welcomed their second child, a son named Ryan.

Quinn drove Antonia to school daily and spent as much time with the children as possible. The children’s friends came over frequently and were treated to nightly acting and dancing performances. When once asked by Antonia why he didn’t have a job, he replied, “My job is making you proud that I’m your papa,” he answered, Katherine sold the main house after Quinn passed away, but remodeled the barn and repurposed it into the family’s residence.

Nearby, shortly after Quinn’s passing, he was laid to rest on the estate, a location marked with a large stone he had found. Adjacent is a blossoming water lily pond, enhanced by a backdrop of the Bay. The grave has been designated a Rhode Island Historical Cemetery.

One cannot claim Quinn was spliced to a specific style or school, but he was clearly both modernist and primitivist. He loved the female form, figures, and faces; he had a love of the abstract, as well as Cubism. Working on maquettes on set in Libya during the making of The Lion of the Desert (1980), he was told that his representations of the female figure he was sculpting were illegal; as a result, he worked in abstract instead. Though working in abstract was not new to him, this event may have been the tipping point in that direction.

Quinn lived by the Alfred Tennyson line, “to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.” He loved all types of art, read, and collected books voraciously, and could speak on nearly any subject, even though he never graduated from high school. His passion for life is seen in his joy for making art, and his brilliant eye for collecting art. He is described by Donald Kuspit, professor of art history and philosophy at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and a contributing author of Anthony Quinn’s Eyes: A Lifetime of Creating and Collecting Art, as a true connoisseur—collecting masters such as Matisse and Picasso and outstanding work of lesserknown artists. Kuspit also dubbed him a creative genius.

He had inexhaustible energy.

In the foreword of the same book, Katherine writes, “He was seventy when we met.

Instead of resting on his accomplishments and retiring to a life of comfort and leisure, he was planning projects for the next 20 years. He was rehearsing a nine-month road tour of the stage production of Zorba,

working on a dozen paintings at once, having sculptures cast at five different foundries (none alone was able to handle the volume of work he with creating), writing scripts and books, and searching for characters to play that would satisfy his driving creative spirit.”

Quinn loved working with wood for its tactile nature. He collected beautiful pieces, as well as stone that he found around the world, and shipped them home to sculpt. It is an understatement to say he was driven. He felt a need to be seen and leave his mark.

“If I were left alone on an island,” he said, “I would reconstruct the rocks. I need to say, ‘I was here.’” And yet, he was not precious about his work. He generally only signed his work upon request, for instance, and when a visitor’s dog urinated on one of his sculptures, he laughed it off, saying it would help with the patina.

Katherine, founder and manager of the Anthony Quinn Estate, has helped organize over two dozen exhibitions, while advocating for the essential role arts education plays in personal development and the overall improvement of social, economic, and cultural systems.

Quinn’s life story and artistic legacy for inspiring young adults are central to the foundation’s mission. He always believed that learning about the challenges of his youth and how he overcame them would help inspire confidence in their creative potential. The foundation provides scholarship support to gifted students seeking to further their talents in visual arts and design, as well as performing, media, and literary arts.

Katherine also makes a personal effort to open her home to local school children to appreciate and encourage the arts. Both she and Quinn loved children—he had 13 throughout his life—and would have been proud of Katherine’s efforts to engage children in the arts.

Through the end of September, an exhibit will be displayed at the Hammetts Hotel in Newport, R.I., with the assistance of Newport Curates and Jessica Hegan Fine Art + Design. Quinn’s extraordinary life and multiple talents are engraved into the minds of people who know him, and those finally gaining the opportunity to experience the legend. The Innovation & Success of Downton Abbey Leads to the Branding of Great Britain’s Highclere Castle

T

his story is absent from the realm of those typically promising that if you work hard, the “American Dream” can be yours; it’s not even close to those fables. At face value, the tale is farfetched, edgy, and to some, wildly grandiose. For these reasons, we share the fascinating details.

Adam von Gootkin, a young businessman from Essex, Connecticut, started to dream big— really big. And although his ambition and energy are high on the spectrum, the tinge of glimmer that ignited this adventure was, at best—faint.

Cutting to the chase, it was a mighty good letter and fate that turned an idea into a historic international entrepreneur partnership between two great countries and a pair of like-minded men to create a vivid blue bottle, housing what they claim to be “The Perfect Gin.” Spending a couple of days at the US headquarters for Highclere Castle Spirits in Essex and attending an invitation-only event honoring The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee at the prestigious Wadsworth Mansion in Middletown, (sponsored by the British Consulate General of New England and Governor Lamont) allowed a unique perspective and the opportunity to hear never disclosed facts as to how Highclere Castle is leveraging its worldwide appeal.

The story begins with George Reginald Oliver Molyneux Herbert, 8th Earl of Carnarvon, and his beautiful and charming wife, Lady Fiona, the 8th Countess of Carnarvon. Stepping into the limelight by way of Downton Abbey fame, their “Castle” is, ostensibly, the most recognized home in the world.

As for von Gootkin, he is not a stranger to the spirits business; his family was distilling in the 1800s, followed by his grandfather opening a speakeasy during Prohibition in Connecticut.

Hence, he began to search for an icon befitting his passion and experience. But with trepidation, he questioned where such symbols were hiding and whether he would discover one.

Taking risk is in von Gootkin’s DNA; as a CEO, published author, and co-founder of Onyx Spirits Company, a producer of premium moonshine and whiskey, he realized the opportunity to build one of the greatest modern-day brands reaching worldwide appeal would take some soul-searching and plenty of luck.

To learn more, we sat with Lord Carnarvon and von Gootkin, opened a bottle of gin and a box of cigars, and let the tape run.

a distillery, one of the first in decades here in Connecticut, known as Onyx Spirits Company—it was successful, but the brand was limited, and although profitable in its growth because it was a boutique distillery, I didn’t feel it would resonate outside the New England region.

About a year before COVID, a Canadian company bought our building; our lease was running out, while at the same time, it converged with the launch of Highclere Castle Gin which I was preparing for. I ended up sacrificing Onyx for Highclere, but at some point, we will go back and get our original brand going again.

But, more particularly, tell me how you discovered Highclere.

NEMEDIA

So Adam, tell us, what was the genesis of Highclere Spirits, and now the cigar brand?

ADAM

It was in 2009; I was in my twenties and learning as much as possible about distilling. Drinking them was my first passion, followed by making them. (Laughter). I ended up building

After better learning the business, understanding the nuances of the liquor industry, and getting a network around us, I started watching how companies on an international level were missing key elements in branding and saw that they weren’t focusing on authenticity, luxury, and where they meet. I decided that what we were doing [with Onyx] could

be applied to a brand with more global appeal, so I began to look for a brand—for about a year. I was looking at people, places, and countries, rolling around ideas, just keeping an eye out for something.

I also enjoy fine scotches and whiskies, and on a nearby island, we have seven or eight amazing distilleries. And, so, it seemed like a fascinating idea.

My wife and I have always had an affinity for England, we visit almost every year, and one day she forced me to watch Downton Abbey after asking me for months. Honestly, I didn’t want to watch a soap opera. [Smiling}

I’d like to interject; I think people might often believe that because you own a castle, you don’t work, but what I learned and found impressive about Lord and Lady Carnarvon is that they have an acute work ethic. They are both committed to keeping Highclere Castle going.

We watched it, and after an episode, the screen came up and said something about staying tuned for the real story of Highclere Castle. I recall it wasn’t until 2015 that I watched the documentary and realized this is a real place, so I started my research to learn more.

What followed was my wife Regina—I believe, saying to me, but she swears I came up with the idea, ‘This is where you should do your next brand.’ I give her credit for coming up with the concept; she says it was my idea. Regardless, the words came out that night, ‘My God, you’re right!’

What was your next step?

ADAM

The next day I went to my study and sent an email to the general inquiry box….

LORD CARNARVON

Actually, it went to the box called ‘The Office’; it was the first obstacle in getting by my team, but they actually passed [the email] it on to me.

ADAM

I spent a lot of time on the letter; I want to be very clear on the messaging. I expected…well, to be honest, when I want something, I usually get it, and I did expect a response.

At the same time, I didn’t consider it to be a big deal; I didn’t give it much thought. It was like playing the lottery. I just wanted to get my ideas out.

What I didn’t expect was for my phone to ring the next day and to find Lord Carnarvon calling me.

NEMEDIA

Lord Carnarvon, what did you think about a viewer of the show coming up with what may have appeared to be an overly ambitious request to make gin?

(Laughter)

ADAM

NEMEDIA

Lord Carnarvon, why did you agree to a meeting; was it something Adam said, or was it his charm?

(Laughter) LORD CARNARVON

His letter was well written, and it seemed Adam was committed and would be dedicated to the effort. And enthusiasm goes a long way; we view Americans that way. [Smiling] I consider myself a bit of an entrepreneur, but I don’t have ideas at the same rate as Adam and Fiona. [Laughing].

I try to keep the back wheels of the car on the ground while the front ones are spinning. [Grin].

NEMEDIA

Adam, how long did the process take before you came up with the label “The Perfect Gin?” ADAM

I recently came up with that, which is true in flavor and its story.

NEMEDIA

I want to ask you both a question; how long did it take to perfect the taste of Highclere Gin? ADAM

He [Lord Carnarvon] put the taste together, which is amusing.

His final touch made the difference.

LORD CARNARVON

Fiona and I wanted a powerful flavor of citrus and lavender… it speaks to the orange flavors found at Highclere. If you put a matrix up, you have many ingredients, including the amount of alcohol; there are multiple combinations…

ADAM

It’s a very large flavor chart…

LORD CARNARVON

LORD CARNARVON

His [Adam’s] timing was good; we had made a substantial success of the Castle, we had some good fortune and wanted to make the best of it, and I had been speaking to my wife about how we could add value to the building by branding it.

We also had a fair amount of interest from other people in the US, not just the UK, so this offered some possible openings for discussions.

ADAM

We were nearly there, but I still wasn’t satisfied, and we didn’t want a bite to the back of the throat, so we added oats from our farm.

Lord Carnarvon decided to use oats—which had never been used in the production of gin; it took over a year to develop the recipe.

What do you attribute to the fact that non-gin drinkers love your product?

Now, for the more difficult questions.

ADAM

I don’t admit this often, but, and I should; gin was my least favorite category of all spirits. And the reason it was my least favorite was because the mass producers/category leaders are very Juniper heavy; it is okay, it is a particular profile [taste], but it is akin to pine, and I don’t love that flavor. That corner of the market was established, and we wanted a more modern profile.

Gin has been served at Highclere for over 100 years; it is quintessential; the British are known for the love of the drink; tik-tik-tik, gin—it was the obvious choice.

The challenge for me was, just as when I brought cigars to Lord Carnarvon, he said he didn’t like cigars, so I saw it as a challenge and asked, ‘how do we create a cigar that for someone not impressed with the taste, will go out and try a truly good cigar?’

LORD CARNARVON

Regarding the gin, I was very keen on the aromatics, so when you open the bottle at a distance, [the fragrance] it’s fantastic!

We found a total change with the oats, and while not having tasted it yet, I knew we would be close. And, the high alcohol content makes a difference due to evaporation once opened— it dissipates faster.

How have you positioned your gin in a market that will foreseeably reach $20.17 billion by 2028 but is dominated by seven major brands, with active consolidation by conglomerates? How will you compete?

ADAM

These are a couple of concise answers to your question. First, as a brand, Highclere Castle Gin—I believe—is the only gin that intersects through three key areas. First, luxury; second, it’s mass-market; and lastly, craft.

We are distilled in England’s oldest and most recognized distillery; we utilize botanical components, and the recipe was meticulously created and fully crafted in every sense. It isn’t a small batch, but it has been crafted in every way.

Mass market, we are distributed in 30 US states and seven countries, all within the last two years. This success by any brand standard is ridiculous. And the reason we’ve been able to achieve this is because of the special connection between Highclere Castle and its affiliation with the series; it resonates with the public.

The story of Highclere Castle has given our product a global platform.

LORD CARNARVON

That leads me to ask, how do you achieve the creamy palate?

I might add that the line drawing of the Castle is recognizable; the trademarked image is slightly different than the one as it appears in association with Downton Abbey—it is a separate commercial I.D. but is key to recognizing the brand.

ADAM

There is an instant understanding of the message.

NEMEDIA

I originally thought the oats were silly, but Lord Carnarvon felt the oats from Highclere should be tried.

LORD CARNARVON

Adding the oats made an immediate improvement, which is the industry we are surrounded by and known to produce at Highclere.

ADAM

Most gins have a similar finish as vodka, instantly evaporating from the back of your tongue. With the addition of the oats, there are oils that allow you to chew the gin, which causes salivation and lasts for 10 seconds. Look, [pointing at a glass with gin] you can see the viscosity; it resembles syrup. With wine, we talk about ‘legs.’ Gin does not have legs, but Highclere does. Each sip sits and allows the nose, the tongue, and other regions [of the mouth] to explore its unique taste.

LORD CARNARVON

For the best Gin & Tonic, we’ve found orange peel and rosemary are the perfect combinations to get the taste right; it has become a superior drink as a result.

There are 250,000,000 to 350,000,00 people around the planet, that if you presented them with a bottle of Highclere Castle Gin, a good percentage of them would recognize the association with the location Downton Abbey was filmed.

The third piece is luxury; we have a $40 price-point—a superpremium category—an exceptional bottle; it is understated and has a story comprised of one of the world’s most famous castles. Adding to this is the association of one of England’s most prominent families.

NEMEDIA

But, major brands are having difficulties, and having to cut prices while biding for self-space is an issue. Public relations will only carry you so far. My question is, can you continue this growth organically?

ADAM

The marketplace is changing; the consumer—the buyers, are wise; they recognize they are being fed fast food in nice pack-

aging. Never before have consumers demanded high-quality products. It is our job to offer them the solution, and it is the same for the buyers of liquor products at the finest restaurants, clubs, and hotels. When we visit a top-tier establishment, rarely do they not place an order.

ADAM

NEMEDIA

My promise to my partners was to create a gin that would be here 100 years from now.

It’s agreed that you have a wonderful product; however, in a recent commentary published by IWSR Drink Market Analysis, they purport, and I quote, “Gin must be careful not to repeat the mistakes of its closest rival, vodka.” They continue with what seems to be a direct hit to your category; “It is no secret that vodka has struggled to keep its head above water in recent times; the consumer’s backlash against faddy flavors marketed by brands has been extensively documented. Similarly, as evermore obscure and radical botanical tinctures are beginning to overcrowd the gin market, flavor fatigue and lack of equity may start to haunt the category.”

I want to be clear; I had no interest in putting the Downton Abbey image on a bottle or doing a licensing deal. It was more that I wanted to fully understand the story of Highclere and forge a partnership for the long run.

NEMEDIA

Where do you go from here; memories fade, and audiences age; can Highclere Castle Gin be a stand-alone brand?

ADAM

If you look at other great brands in the world, they built their companies off their quality and innovation; our backstory is more about our history. Lord and Lady Carnarvon have worked on ushering in a new view of their home.

We are continuing a legacy.

What is your perspective?

NEMEDIA

ADAM

I must ask, has your godmother [Queen Elizabeth] sampled your gin?

It’s easy; it’s easy. Forget the gin; forget the category. We have liquified a unique brand. The customers we reach out to are experiential people. The bartenders want us on their shelves, and people entertaining guests want to tell our story.

We are about life in another era. This is the liquification of these elements.

LORD CARNARVON

Our competition surrounds us, but…

That is an interesting question. There is a protocol, of course.

We sponsored a [horse] race, and her [the Queen’s] young filly won, so the winner received a gift bottle; I sent her a bottle to Winsor along with a nice letter. She sent a most charming reply telling me she enjoyed it.

LORD CARNARVON

NEMEDIA

Yes, we have lots of competition from the fruity alternatives, but I don’t know how long that will last.

Final words, gentleman?

LORD CARNARVON

ADAM

I think the future holds our doing an English whiskey; others have tried and done well. We would have a more powerful brand and do well.

Do you know why everyone is making gin? Because vodka is dead, and the small distilleries are waiting for their whiskies to age.

ADAM

But, this doesn’t matter to me; the way I view our brand is how I view Highclere Castle. It is about what the Carnarvon line represents in history. What is behind this family is identical to our product. We are not worried about giant corporations.

It would be a big capital project but worthwhile. If COVID didn’t happen, we would be further along. This year, we are doing a re-launch of the gin.

Adam, you speak to authenticity; is that your selling point?

ADAM

It is the pillar of the company; it is what Highclere Castle is about and why I hold the Lord and Lady Carnarvon in such high esteem.

LORD CARNARVON

This was never about putting the Highclere Castle name on a standard product; where you choose one out of 10 licensing deals, it has always been more than that.

LORD CARNARVON

person who takes her health seriously, Lesley Patterson of Scotland, is a five-time world champion off-road triathlete; she’s also a proponent of intravenous (IV) vitamin therapy. In a video testimonial for LIVV Natural Health, the vivacious self-described lassie explains the clinic’s holistic approach to treating their clients.

Through testing and teamwork, LIVV’s naturopathic doctors managed to get to the root of the symptoms she’d been experiencing for the past decade: chronic fatigue syndrome, Lyme Disease, brain fog, and gut health problems. Patterson was treated with many therapies offered at LIVV: IV-delivered vitamins and minerals to compensate for nutrient-poor foods and maximize bioavailability; ozone therapy to combat toxins such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses; nutrient injections; and other alternative modalities.

After nearly a year at LIVV, she says she’s had a “wonderful experience” and encourages others to try the practice to live their lives to the fullest.1 MIND OVER MATTER?

Patterson’s experience and many like hers aren’t unique, though conventional medicine is often quick to dismiss their results.

Modern Infusion therapies can be traced back to the 19th century, and Dr. Thomas Latta, during the cholera epidemic of

1831-32, discovered that intravenously infusing saltwater could successfully treat the disease. Though his accomplishment wasn’t taken seriously by his peers, and his name didn’t survive his passing in 1833, he is considered the father of intravenous infusion therapy.2 Today, IV vitamin therapy, where a saline solution of vitamins is infused directly into a vein through a needle, is touted for boosting energy, enhancing immunity and mental acuity, quick hydration, and fighting stubborn conditions like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. Naturopathic medical doctor Michael Ruscio, DNM, D.C., explains that many feel an immediate surge of energy after vitamin infusion and swears by the practice. This could be because people were deficient in one or more nutrient areas or because they were dehydrated. It could also be due to a placebo effect.3 We’re very likely to have preconceived notions that an invasive treatment we voluntarily chose and wasn’t inexpensive will work, says Ruscio. A small randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled study in the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine illustrated this phenomenon in 34 people with fibromyalgia. When given either an intravenous combination of calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, and B vitamins (called a “Myers’ cocktail” after creator John Myers, M.D. in 1959) or a placebo by IV, both groups reported relief. There was no significant difference between groups after 2 or 4 months.4 Not that there’s anything necessarily wrong with a placebo effect, but Ruscio says IV vitamin therapy should be considered carefully, as it’s not without risk.

Today, IV vitamin therapy, where a saline solution of vitamins is infused directly into a vein through a needle, is touted for boosting energy, enhancing immunity and mental acuity, quick hydration, and fighting stubborn conditions like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.

WHAT’S THE EVIDENCE?

To help people determine their risk tolerance, Ruscio has identified studies with moderate-to-good evidence in favor of IV therapy. He notes, however, that in placebo-controlled studies, it’s difficult to know whether any improvements were simply due to the increase in nutrients or to any special advantage from the IV delivery (versus oral supplementation).

Magnesium IV therapy for asthma was found to be effective in children. In a review of six randomized and semi-randomized controlled trials (RCTs), researchers in China found that intravenously administered magnesium sulfate in children with acute asthma significantly improved lung function and decreased hospitalization and the need for more treatment. In contrast, nebulized magnesium sulfate showed no real effect.5 (Though not an RCT, a small 2004 study in Nutrition Journal showed similarly positive results with IV vitamins, including magnesium, in adults with acute and chronic asthma.)

IV vitamin C for inflammation was found to benefit people under 60 years of age. In a review of 12 RCTs, researchers in Iran, Italy, and Australia found that vitamin C supplementation was effective at lowering blood levels of C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation), especially through intravenous delivery, in a lower dosage, and in younger people with higher inflammation levels at the outset.6 IV vitamin C for fatigue was found to be effective in healthy office workers in a double-blind RCT. Researchers in Korea divided 141 people aged 20-49 into two groups roughly equal in size: one group receiving 10 grams (10,000 mg) of IV vitamin C in a saline solution and the other a saline-only placebo.

Compared to the placebo group, vitamin C recipients scored lower feelings of fatigue 2 hours and 24 hours after administration, as well as higher blood levels of vitamin C and lower oxidative stress. Only those with a lower baseline level of vitamin C experienced reduced fatigue. Adverse events were minimal.

“High dose intravenous vitamin C proved to be safe and effective against fatigue in this study,” concluded the authors.7 IV glutathione after a heart attack was found to be useful in a pilot RCT of 50 cardiac patients in Italy. Before undergoing 62 | SEPTEMBER 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

angioplasty, patients randomly received either 2,500 mg/25 mL of IV glutathione (a powerful antioxidant) over a 10-minute period every 24 hours for 3 days or a placebo. The researchers found that IV glutathione reduced blood levels of hydrogen peroxide for up to 5 days. Less hydrogen peroxide improved survival of heart cells.8 On the other hand, a small RCT showed no benefit when using IV selenium (a trace mineral with antioxidant properties) for acute respiratory distress syndrome. In a comprehensive review of available research, IV vitamin C offered no benefit for cancer, sepsis, or critically ill hospitalized patients. Likewise, IV magnesium provided no real benefit for the relief of muscle cramps or improvement after a stroke.3 IV vitamin therapy can be beneficial, but mostly for specific medical conditions, Ruscio explains. But even in a clinical setting, researchers haven’t been able to determine the effectiveness of IV vitamin therapy, nor have they been able to find evidence-based guidelines for clinical use. Uses could be for malabsorption, post-surgical recovery, burns, trauma, intoxication, etc.9 WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

In 2018, various news outlets reported how Kendall Jenner was hospitalized for a bad reaction to an IV vitamin drip before an Academy Awards appearance. Celebrities often utilize the therapy for a quick infusion of electrolytes and hydration to give them stamina on the red carpet or to help them manage cold symptoms and hangovers. Jenner has said that the pricey treatments give her a sense of control over her health.

On this occasion, however, she needed non-serious hospital treatment and was released a short time later. It was unclear what caused the reaction, but just using an IV opens the door to potential complications.

ER physician Travis Stork, M.D. says the trend of IV therapy among celebrities began as a cure for hangovers, though it’s expensive and “definitely not a cure-all” since much of the hangover is from alcohol toxins that need time to metabolize.

Moreover, typical IV vitamin treatments received at boutiquelike clinics are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. There’s also a small risk of infection, bleeding, pain, or bruising if the vein is missed. More concerning, IVs can lead to a blood clot or vein inflammation. Though very rare, a poorly inserted IV could even cause an air embolism that could lead to a stroke.10 Joshua Septimus, M.D., an associate professor of clinical medicine at Houston Methodist Research Institute who views IV vitamin therapy as “nonsense,” says its risks depend heavily on the vitamin mixture. A person with an undiagnosed kidney issue who receives a mixture high in calcium runs the risk of life-threatening blood clots from calcium deposits. He advises anyone with a heart issue to steer clear of IV therapy, as excess fluid could cause heart failure, and people with diabetes should avoid sugar-containing solutions. Immunocompromised people should never engage in IV therapy due to risk of infection from

an unsanitary or improperly inserted needle, and people with liver disease should also avoid the treatment.11 Lesley Patterson’s IV therapy clinic took the time to understand her medical history, but Ehsan Ali, M.D., a Beverly Hills “concierge doctor,” says this often doesn’t happen. Without that knowledge, unexpected reactions can occur.12 WORTH THE EFFORT?

Vitamin supplementation remains controversial, but it could be argued that supplements are a relatively inexpensive form of health insurance in an age of processed and nutrient-depleted foods. That said, adequate research on IV vitamins is lacking, as in comparing IV administration to oral delivery with higher doses.

The bottom line, according to Ruscio, is that it’s best to eat a whole-foods diet plus any needed oral supplements, even with gut/absorption issues. Other experts agree that the oral route of nutrient delivery is the one nature intended. Even B12 injections are unnecessary, says Ruscio, with a higher oral dose an effective alternative.

For people still curious whether they might benefit from IV therapy, as for fatigue or inflammation, Stork says, “If you have the money to burn and use a reputable service, it’s perfectly reasonable to do it.”

Prices can vary depending on the local market, treatment type, and size, but typically range from $125 to $300 per session. Ensure a doctor or nurse is administering the IV and that the clinician(s) have a detailed understanding of your medical history to avoid unnecessary complications and maximize results.

Because IV vitamin clinics are an unregulated industry, Stork says a person’s biggest risk is the person administering the IV. “The real danger is if you are being treated by a charlatan. It’s so important to go somewhere reputable if you are going to do this because otherwise, it is anyone’s guess what they are putting in the IV bags.”10 H 1. LIVV Natural Health. (2020, February 8). hy do some romantic partners treat the other more poorly than friends, acquaintances, and sometimes even strangers after several years? The tendency seems odd when considering that a romantic partner is the most important person in one’s life.

Some may recall a moment when being talked to in a harsh tone until the phone rang, and then a partner abruptly shifted to speaking with warmth to a friend. Another example is when partners don’t consult one another about decisions, only to show extraordinary effort and sensitivity to an activity group arranging get-togethers. This list goes on, and naturally, it is difficult not to take these behaviors personally.

Most romantic partners feel that the early years’ passion fades while giving way to a long-term “work phase,” which feels more like drudgery than excitement. The “new car syndrome” is similar in that the excitement of a new vehicle declines as quickly as its fresh smell.

Some conclude that passionate love cannot last, but the pattern we focus on is darker than descending from excitement to a normal level of caring; often, it is felt as being mistreated.

Accepted truths, “The more intimately you know someone, the more you see their flaws,” highlights the long road ahead for many relationships but fails to suggest the coldness with which partners tend to freeze the other out. Another

axiom, “familiarity breeds contempt,” comes closer to describing the phenomenon.

A potential partner’s public face may easily attract. Strengths, positivity, and beauty are displayed while inadequacies remain hidden and dormant. However, once intimacy develops, the pain buried within becomes evident. As we get close, we are delivered a basket of unexpected behaviors as partners.

Self-esteem is a conglomeration of our strengths and good qualities and our weaknesses, limitations, and old wounds. The more pain held within, the lower their self-esteem will become.

Sharing personal troubles and inadequacies is a far lower intensity than when an emotional attachment has formed. But, once an intimate connection is created, the pain awakens and influences how the partner is experienced and treated.

When the connection between romantic partners develops, the partner’s psychology becomes an extension of the self, emotionally indistinguishable. They get treated how the romantic partner feels about their worst parts; a form of projection. Once love opens a partner to closeness, inwardly held troubles cannot be prevented from polluting the relationship connection.
