REPLENISH & PRESERVE

the most unforgettable weekend of the year and kick-off to many vacations has arrived and will undoubtedly be one for the record!

As summer begins, plans that have been in the works for what seems like forever are coming to fruition; thousands upon thousands of guests, tourists, summer people, and even locals who desire more than what their hometown offers will be packing up for what appears to be a “six-day weekend.”

With the rushing rivers rolling through the lush valleys at the base of New England mountains, methodical waves crashing on Long Island Sound, the colorful and billowing spinnakers pushing a fleet of sailors across the finish lines of Narragansett Bay, and the soft sand beaches of Cape Cod and the SouthCoast; all will serve as destinations brought on by pent-up demand we’ve longed to embrace.

Knowing that the season is short and so much needs to be accomplished in the next 60 days, families are frantic but excited to get an early start; we hope for perfect weather and safe traveling.

Too often, world events shadow our enthusiasm and subsequently take the focus away from self-care, thankfully the Forth of July gives us a necessary dose of a remedy that recharges and rejuvenates our psychological and physiological synchronization; it’s referred to as “A Good Vibe.”

The summer holiday season should comfort us, knowing we can somewhat departmentalize our lives without being rendered helpless; it’s the perfect time to inventory and reconnect to what we value and want for our families.

We all deserve an opportunity to enjoy this particular summer; the combination of thrills, excitement, and quiet pleasures that settle the mind, will offer a wellneeded escape from the intensity and discord we’ve faced for much too long.

The summer holiday season should comfort us, knowing we can somewhat departmentalize our lives without being rendered helpless; it’s the perfect time to inventory and reconnect to what we value and want for our families.

The summer cocktail for the summer of 2023 is easily prepared; add two-parts peace and relaxation, combined with equal parts of fun and novelty; gently stirred, poured over a generous amount of crushed ice, and garnished with sweet indulgence, this delightful recipe will quench your thirst for satisfaction and pleasure — at least for a couple of months.

Have a spectacular Fourth of July and a wonderful summer season! H

A SOUTHCOAST HARBOR RETREAT MAKES A GRAND IMPRESSION

There’s much to adore about the intricacies of the Massachusetts coastline. Without exception, one of the most desirable and fascinating locations attracting those with a lust for beauty and a peaceful existence is found along the pristine shoreline of Padanaram’s inner harbor in South Dartmouth.

Once a secret, the town and its ‘Village’ has reinvented itself over the last few years, offering a fine complement of retailers and essentials; it’s also home to marinas and a yacht club, yet retains the charm and mystique that has drawn families for generations. So strong the attraction, it’s not unusual for some to leave with visions of finding better, only to return home and realize this is the standard other communities are measured.

This month’s feature home is easily manageable just shy of 4,000 square-feet, it doesn’t abandon the luxury lifestyle desired by today’s home buyers. The stately New England shingled residence is an impressive sight with its manicured landscape, Koi pond, panoramic views of the estuary, and views of estates sprinkled upon a distant shore.

Wildlife maintains residence within the rich and lush marine environment, fulfilling the needs of humans to be in touch and bond with nature. Such interaction forms an idyllic partnership.

Those seeking a palate for sharing their taste will be inspired to personalize their new home and will be satisfied to find a versatile floor plan that includes open space, soaring ceilings, large windows, hardwood floors, and light so abundant it invigorates the soul from sunrise to dusk.

THE STATELY NEW ENGLAND SHINGLED RESIDENCE IS AN IMPRESSIVE SIGHT WITH ITS MANICURED LANDSCAPE, KOI POND, PANORAMIC VIEWS OF THE ESTUARY, AND VIEWS OF ESTATES SPRINKLED UPON A DISTANT SHORE.

So strong the attraction, it’s not unusual for some to leave with visions of finding better, only to return home and realize this is the standard other communities are measured.

ADDING TO THE ANTICIPATION OF GATHERING EXTENDED FAMILIES TOGETHER FOR LONG WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS, THE SIZE AND ACCOMMODATION OF THE OPEN KITCHEN, ATTACHED GREAT ROOM, AND FORMAL DINING ROOM ARE ABSOLUTELY SATISFYING.

20 | JULY 2023 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Adding to the anticipation of gathering extended families together for long weekends and holidays, the size and accommodation of the open kitchen, attached great room, and formal dining room are absolutely satisfying. The five-plus bedrooms and seven bathrooms are unique, offering privacy

and convenience to homeowners and their guests. While the curb appeal is conservative and understated, the highlight of the home is where most will spend their time. A deck spreading the length of the house, at a heightened vantage point, offers a spectacular view and attractiveness. Below is a heated saltwater inground gunite pool with a spa, hot tub, pool house, and shower.

One feature couples will be delighted with is the first-floor primary bedroom ensuite, with dramatic views and a fireplace that will remove a chill while,

at the same time, heat things up; it’s best described as an oasis of indulgence. Located along a private drive and behind a natural buffer for privacy, new owners will become accustomed to feelings of sanctuary and a rhythm of enjoyment.

All of these pleasures await persons who comprehend the value of an underpriced real estate market in one of the most desirable communities in New England, which will only improve over time. H

678 Elm Street, South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, is offered at $2,250,000 and is represented exclusively by Milbury and Company through The Meehan Group, located at 304 Elm Street in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. To schedule a private tour, contact the listing agent, Sarah Meehan, at 508-685-8926 or sarah@milburyre.com.

ONE FEATURE COUPLES WILL BE DELIGHTED WITH IS THE FIRST-FLOOR PRIMARY BEDROOM ENSUITE, WITH DRAMATIC VIEWS AND A FIREPLACE THAT WILL REMOVE A CHILL WHILE, AT THE SAME TIME, HEAT THINGS UP; IT’S BEST DESCRIBED AS AN OASIS OF INDULGENCE.

As impressive as one finds the home’s initial presentation, other features, including an attached oversized two-stall garage, in-ground pool, tree house, irrigation, and additional detached garage, will result in love at first sight.

As the horizon changes, it’s assuring to know that a firm, started over 45 years ago by Frank P. Adamowski, remains a leader in the field of taxes, accounting and business consulting.

It’s a comfort to know quality services are available locally.

Living Well

AMERICANS ARE FALTERING UNDER THE WEIGHT OF STRESS

As the US stock market remains divorced from economic reality, many experts in the blogosphere are warning that the largest debt bubble in history is starting to implode. Americans’ view of the economy reflects as much, with a 2023 public opinion survey showing 40 percent of nearly 1,500 US adults viewing our economic state as “poor,” and another 29 percent as “fair.”1

But some pundits say it’s more of an “everything bubble” that has them worried, which they see as including the very social fabric of the nation. They point to deepening cultural divides, rampant theft and rising violence in many US cities, an increase in drug use and homelessness, low surety of belief in God, and numerous other factors. That shows in our well-being, as more Americans report being unhappy and lonely than in the past 50 years.

MORE ARE ADDICTED

Americans report feeling beset by stress and this increased

tension and anxiety can make us more vulnerable to unhealthy behaviors and addiction.

In February 2023, Salt Lake City-based Myriad Genetics conducted a national survey of 1,000 US adults, called the GeneSight ® Mental Health Monitor. The study found that an estimated 77 percent of Americans confess to dealing with stress and mental health difficulties by engaging in at least one behavior and/or coping mechanism many of us know are addictive or unhealthy, yet still do anyway. Nearly all of us (94 percent) agree that we often mask mental health issues with addictions to substances or behaviors, yet many of us still admit to using or doing them ourselves. 2, 3

In chart 1 on the next page, the first column in each behavioral category represents the percentage of respondents (rounded to the nearest tenth) who viewed the substance or behavior in question as addictive or unhealthy. The second column is the percentage of respondents who admitted to personal use.

28 | JULY 2023 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION ON THE RISE

The survey also found that anxiety and depression rates rose significantly in just one year. Between spring of 2022 and spring of 2023, anxiety diagnoses increased by 19 percent and depression by 29 percent, with rates of people “who may be suffering” rising even more substantially at 27 percent and 45 percent, respectively.

Among respondents dissatisfied with their mental state, chart 2 reveals the top underlying factors.

WHAT’S DRIVING UNHEALTHY CHOICES?

In the survey, 77 percent of people diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression viewed drinking alcohol by themselves as a bad way to cope that could become addictive, yet 41 percent said they do it themselves to get by. Worse, 25 percent admitted to drinking heavily and worried they had a problem.

At Indiana Center for Recovery, Dawn Johnson, a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, has seen these struggles in her own patients. In an interview with Myriad Genetics, she said, “Many of my patients have struggled with depression and/or anxiety but failed to find a treatment that made them feel better. So, they resorted to alcohol, drugs or destructive behaviors to sooth themselves, as these offered short-term relief. However, this behavior resulted in worsening mental health and destruction of their lives. I’ve seen it personally.” Johnson’s own husband succumbed to his mental health issues and addictions, which motivated her to want to help others.2

A full two-thirds of respondents diagnosed with anxiety and/ or depression have had to search for a medication that works through trial and error. Yet, 45 percent of these individuals failed in their quest and resorted to unhealthy coping in the form of too much or too little sleep (70 percent), social withdrawal (64 percent), binge watching (49 percent), skipping responsibilities (48 percent).

These factors had far-reaching negative implications for daily life, affecting everything from self-esteem and social engagement to being the best friend, spouse, and worker people wanted to be. They especially hit hard for people feeling anxious and/or depressed.

In addition to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues, people tend to be more prone to self-destructive behavior if, for example, they’ve previously used addictive substances, were neglected as a child, suffered physical or emotional abuse, have low self-esteem, and being socially isolated or excluded.4

We also know that health behavior is influenced by factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, age, where one lives, sexual orientation, income, and education, can influence stress and health behiavor.5

HEALTHIER COPING STRATEGIES

Addiction is a vicious cycle, as it can make us more anxious and stressed, causing us to reinforce our unhealthy behavior. Explained Morgan Freas, Pharm.D., Myriad Genetics’ senior medical science liaison, “Mental health and addiction often go hand-in-hand. Yet the stigma associated with admitting mental health challenges is often greater than escaping into substance or behavioral abuse.”2

Still, the survey revealed that 58 percent of respondents diagnosed with anxiety and/or depression reported success with mental health therapy in helping with their addictions.

To better help mental health patients benefit from medication, Johnson uses Myriad Genetics’ novel GeneSight test that allows clinicians to prescribe a custom medication program based on individual genetic makeup. In this way, gene-drug interactions in the form of improper metabolism, no symptom relief, or terrible side effects can be averted.

Additionally, Mayo Clinic explains how it’s important to build resilience in tough times, allowing us to adapt to adversity and keep functioning healthfully. Instead of dwelling on problems, feeling victimized or overwhelmed, or turning to unhealthy coping behaviors, we’re able to keep going. Resilience can help protect us from anxiety, depression, and other mental health struggles; help us to better cope with existing psychological struggles and help to offset those factors that can harm mental health.7

To build resilience, Mayo Clinic suggests building and strengthening social relationships, as through volunteering or a joining faith-based group; giving each day meaning, doing something daily that provides a sense of accomplishment, with clear goals for the future; learning from past hardships and reflecting on how you coped; practicing healthy lifestyle habits; and staying hopeful. No situation in this life is permanent.

We can also practice time-honored human traits such as compassion, kindness, gratitude, and forgiveness to help foster happiness and promote healing in our own selves, overcoming fear and self-doubt and boosting self-esteem.

States Mayo Clinic, “When you have resilience, you harness the inner strength that helps you rebound from a setback or challenge, such as a job loss, an illness, a disaster, or a loved one’s death. Resilience won’t make your problems go away— but resilience can give you the ability to see past them, find enjoyment in life and better handle stress.”

An invaluable skill for troubling times. H

The mill pond smooth and still Blue skies reflected on her face

The waterfall her flowing hair

Wears flowered banks like Irish lace

And honeysuckle hanging low She’s all dressed up, no place to go

A river runs through him

Flowing fast and bending wide White-water rapids rushing Zigzag through the countryside

Across the meadows down a hill

To the mill pond smooth and still

The mill pond flowers bend From a surge of sudden tide

The mill pond surface ripples

Whirlpool churning her inside

The pond it was will be no more

But that’s what she was hoping for

A river runs through them

Meandering together

Seeking Love or Peddling Deceit?

It has been estimated some 17 million American men are traveling to distant lands hoping to find women who, they say, possess femininity, old-world values and are happy to show appreciation and kindness rather than the attitude of, ‘What have you done for me lately?’

By various accounts, the blame lies squarely on the women’s movement, specifically radical feminism, with trends indicating a devaluation of males in modern-day society.

Frustration has stewed for years within these wild adventurers, claiming they’ve grown weary in attempts to meet unrealistic expectations of the opposite sex. Dealing with incessant competition for attention, they spend hoards of personal treasure to win acceptance, only to feel their relationships were temporary until another suitor made a better offer.

It’s a sensitive subject to broach, but here it is; American women are voicing concern—and anger, about the increased interest their counterparts show in searching for potential brides overseas, ostensibly to relocate them to the US and start families. And, while you might wish to shoot the messenger as he explains the severity and staggering numbers of men estimated to be traveling worldwide—seeking companionship; more importantly, should be the concern of how the loss of the opposite sex may affect women’s health, economics, and social scales into the future. Equally alarming to many young women, who never expected this type of competition, are their current prospects, which have been dwindling yearly and are diving again.

The massive relocation of eligible bachelors has become loosely organized while expanding. With this rise in comradery comes #passportbros, and it’s kicking it, with over 420 million people viewing what appears to be a lifestyle bludgeoning with parties, romps, and scenes out of what once was reserved for the Playboy mansion!

It’s been said by those taking the plunge and headed to South America, Eastern Europe, and Asia; it’s easier and more pleasant to meet and date women abroad because they weren’t brought up with all the trappings or influences enjoyed by those who “seem to want to use or punish us!”

In May of this year, a ‘passport bro’ named Abeyta totaled nearly 1.7 million views when he posted his observations and personal understanding of why men are deserting the dating scene in the US.

He claims it’s easy to date anywhere outside the States; foreign women are raised differently and find American men interesting—even intriguing. They are fascinated with the American accents, the fictitious but widespread belief that everyone in the US is rich, and believe that if they are lucky enough to get married, they too will dance on streets of gold.

Such rumors, accentuated through social media and films, have heightened the desire of millions of women to enter into

32 | JULY 2023 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA
Intimacy
Men Seeking Foreign Brides May Be In For A Surprise!

relationships with foreigners, and behold the new American Dream.

Contributing to the stereotype is a strong dollar. If you have the luxury of working remotely and earning an average salary, the power of your paycheck outside of the US is twice what it would be here; hence, you are ‘rich’ by oversea standards.

The cost of living is a far cry from anywhere these new casanovas hail from, allowing them to perform as if they own a ‘money tree;’ all they need to do is shake it occasionally. Without a doubt, this too, is found to be attractive.

While the thought of a lifestyle change might have some packing their bags, it is fraught with danger and crime.

Many of those looking for love might not have considered that not all countries are as welcoming as we are. In some cases, Americans are seen as infiltrators and con artists; they fly in, covered in glitter and gold, spending money on a new crop of potential mates, leaving the local men unable to compete with the new boy toys.

Conflict can quickly escalate, and while laws and their enforcement have worsened

here, wait until those targeted overseas get a taste of what legal protection looks like for non-citizens. With language barriers and contempt for what might be viewed as predatory actions, caution is advised, moderating behavior and keeping attuned with local customs and expectations.

Upon inspection of comments on websites specifically addressing those traveling for hooking up and little else, they advise men to be wary of mistreatment or disrespect of the women they meet. Many of these playboys locate within a safety net provided by the touristy metro areas of these countries, but those off the beaten path, miles from populated cities, often find themselves highly vulnerable.

Regardless, there are expectations— just like at home— if you use a woman strictly for sex and quickly move on to the next, what may shock you is the number of brothers and male friends the young lady has and what unthinkable acts they will perform on you in retaliation for your disdain.

IT’S SOMETHING TO CONSIDER.

Another problem is using International Dating Sites for ‘meet & greets.’ Filled with empty promises of meeting the woman of your dreams, they’re plagued with corruption. And while the connection between singles might appear real, often resulting in chatting followed by an expectation of meeting, in reality, these

introductions result in expensive journeys to no-show dates offering no recourse.

Scams proliferate and are maintained by unsuspecting and lonely hearts begging for crumbs of love, so much so it has been referenced as a cottage industry, especially in the Baltic states.

A WORD OF CAUTION.

Stories and tales are floated about American citizens marrying women from foreign lands resulting in a panacea of life. Initially, the union appears to be blessed with the expectation of foreverness.

However, the process—which is complicated—of acclimating a new wife into a new culture and processing through the necessary steps to garner her a green card (the authorization to reside and work in the US legally) can become a test of loyalty.

Countless women have reached the finish line, only to desert their spouses, taking their share of valuables and cash they convinced their new husbands to put into their names. Or worse, they meet the five-year statute to complete an overseas marriage, then file for divorce, and once citizenship is approved, they are awarded half of the estate.

Either way, the unexpected outcome is traumatic, life-changing, and expensive.

Ultimately, it’s impossible to predict the validity of these relationships. Sure, many find their soulmates, and happiness abounds, but lurking in the back of minds is the enticement citizenship offers to those who have watched their families for generations struggle with poverty and lost opportunities.

May the buyer, a.k.a. lover, beware; there are no implied warranties or guarantees when searching for a relationship, and there never will be. H

Whales and Turbines, An Unlikely Relationship?

In The Wild
IT DEPENDS ON WHO’S TALKING

There is plenty of evidence that humpback whales are dying in unusual numbers, with beach strandings showing marked increases over the last decade—give or take a year or two. For this discussion, we’re speaking about whale deaths along the shores of New York and New Jersey since a wind-turbine development, known as the Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm off of Atlantic City, opened in 2005.

With a quick search, we found the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has investigated the surge in the demise of the magnificent and protected mammals but reported they had only been able to examine 50 percent of the 178 killed or that have died from unverified trauma. Of those washed up and underwent an unsavory examination, known as necropsy, teams of scientists and fleets of heavy equipment produced evidence that just under half of the population of beached whales were harmed from collisions with ships or entanglement with fishing gear. As for the others, there aren’t any conclusive answers.

Not often was it commonplace to find mammoth putridsmelling carcasses lying on sandy beaches during a morning

stroll. But according to Rob DiGiovanni with the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society of New York, such discoveries became more noticeable when their numbers increased in 2007; around the same time, the wind farm off of New Jersey flipped the switch.

These unexplained occurrences bring out conjectures, with some coming up with rationalizations that include; the increase in whale deaths is primarily due to conservation and protection—there are more of them. Or, the mammal’s food supply is moving closer to shore and coaxing them into the shallows. Then there is the blame the fishermen argument, followed by, “We just don’t know.”

On the surface and behind the scenes, the public is being offered a multiple-choice quiz, expecting you to find an answer you like from the list.

Interestingly, when concerned groups voice speculation as to the possibility building and operating turbines are the culprits involved in these tragedies, NOAA and other organizations are quick to point out there’s no evidence to support the notion that the noise or vibrations given off from construction and/ or the operation of the massive towers is responsible for the ongoing problem; they articulately and with bureaucratic swagger, claim to be following the science and data. Oddly enough, when you look at their findings, you notice they lack

38 | JULY 2023 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

both! This type of response is eerily reminiscent of a recent health concern we all faced—and we know how that ended.

As a result, the short answer appears to be, “We’ll keep track of the dead whales and report what we find.” In contrast to what should be asked, why and how are sound-sensitive mammals handling or unable to adjust to the invasion of ships, construction, and noise entering and being maintained in their supposedly protected environments?

It’s highly doubtful science will conclude that sonar interference correlates with strandings of rotting flesh. And, if it were ever discovered, would it be accurately portrayed? The more significant problem under the surface, which could explain the stalling, is what do you do with thousands of wind turbines in place, being manufactured, or loaded on ships for installation?

the sound of crickets overpowers the wheels of justice.

New Jersey announced on June 30, 2021, that Atlantic Shores was granted hundreds more turbines to be constructed and begin generating power in 2028; absent is concern that more whales might face catastrophic culling resulting from the expansion of wind power. Another question is who decides if profits are more important than species conservation and protection?

According to one newscaster, he feels the reason for the death of these beautiful creatures will never be conclusive because the offshore wind industry and political sweethearts will create a desired outcome.

For now, while walking the scenic beaches of Long Island and other coastal retreats, be careful where you step; it’s only a matter of time before another natural asset shows up from a retreating tide.

We have the answer to this rhetorical question; a moratorium has been requested on any further expansion until a cause and effect can be determined. However, as expected, ACCORDING TO ONE NEWSCASTER, HE FEELS THE REASON FOR THE DEATH OF THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES WILL NEVER BE CONCLUSIVE BECAUSE THE OFFSHORE

History has shown us that respect for the earth’s creatures is in a delicate balance; it’s troubling when the sea beasts need saviors, and none can be found. H

THE OCEAN RACE

Thousands Gather at Fort Adams State Park for The Ocean Race in Newport, Rhode Island

In May, thousands of visitors arrived at Fort Adams State Park by bicycle, automobile, and watercraft to experience the official opening of The Ocean Race at the host city of Newport, Rhode Island. The race village, monikered Ocean Live Park, kicked off the nine-day festival with a parade, music, entertainment, and a warm welcome to guests from all over the globe.

The Ocean Race, Newport’s familyfriendly festival and the only stopover in North America brought a message to the State of Rhode Island: to educate and inspire ocean health for today and future generations.

With this eighth edition of the circumnavigation race to visit American shores, we witnessed the first time an American crew won a leg of the race into the US; it happened Wednesday, May 10, when Rhode Island skipper Charlie Enright led his Newport-based 11th Hour Racing Team across the finish line in first place.

The Ocean Race, Newport’s familyfriendly festival and the only stopover in North America brought a message to the State of Rhode Island: to educate and inspire ocean health for today and future generations.

The Opening Ceremony included a parade led by youth sailors from Sail Newport’s programs carrying the flags of the nations represented in the race, the Navy Band played the national anthem, and the Newport Artillery Company fired a five-gun salute.

Ocean Live Park, the race village cel-

ebrating The Ocean Race, Newport, is as much about the sailors and the boats in the circumnavigation race as it is an educational experience for schoolchildren. The International event promotes ocean literacy and marine stewardship through science, English, math, and art with kindergarten to high school learning programs. With Sail Newport’s assistance, The Ocean Race curriculum has been taught to more than 60 teachers at 20 schools and eight outdoor education facilities across Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York.

On Sunday, May 21, The Ocean Race, 11th Hour Racing Team, departed its hometown of Newport and set off on Leg 5. The team sailed their 60-foot IMOCA race boat 3,500 nautical miles [4,028 miles or 6,482 kilometers] across the Atlantic to Scotland and finished in Aarhus, Denmark.

At press time, the 11th Hour Racing Team battles towards Genova, Italy, for the Grand Finale; the expected arrival time is estimated on June 25, with the last In-Port Race held on July 1, 2023. H

THE FUTURE OF HEALTH CARE HAS ARRIVED

Boston’s Mass General Hospital Advances Robotic and AI-Assisted Surgery

The new buzzword on the lips of many in research and medicine is ‘robotics.’ But, to an unknowing public lacking comprehensive knowledge or understanding of mechanically-assisted surgery (theorized over 50 years ago and first used in the late 80s), it’s oddly being positioned by some as a new—in so much as a revolutionary surgical method; that on its own, has left the station.

The dawn of advanced surgical treatments has eclipsed outdated techniques and is entering an intersection filled with technological advances; the new direction of robotics is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and roboticassisted procedures orchestrated by surgeons and soon to be guided by fully automated equipment in surgical suites monitored by medical staff. Sound far-fetched? It’s not.

In an article published in the National Library of Medicine (Mahendra Bhandari, Reddiboina, 2020), the authors summarize, “The next iteration of surgical robots conform human-initiated actions to a personalized surgical plan leveraging 3D digital segmentation generated prior to surgery. The advancements in cloud computing, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence have led to increased research and development of intelligent robots in all walks of human life. Inspired by the successful application of deep learning, several surgical companies are joining hands with tech giants to develop intelligent surgical robots.”

With this comes true advancement rather than a reliance on existing technology and practices. Leading hospitals have already enlisted AI into patient diagnostics and treatment, with a vision of more remarkable progress on the cusp of discovery.

Old-school surgical intervention is evolving with a new crop of doctors with the insight and skills necessary to meet the demands of the latest technology. Not unlike handing the key to a Lamborghini with 740 horsepower and a top speed of 217 mph to a new driver, physicians performing robotic surgery with AI and 3D combined must have unequivocal skills and training that begins as a resident rather than taking a course mid-career; not that ongoing education isn’t relevant, but, it’s more about understanding how the learning and practice of new and abstract technology are accumulative.

Even Intuitive, a leader in robotic surgical technology, having completed more than 10 million procedures using their machines, stresses the importance of “highly experienced surgeons” taking on the task of advanced surgeries using their tools.

Boston’s Mass General Hospital, ranking #1 in U.S. News & World Report, 2022-2023, as Best Hospitals in New England and the #1 Research Hospital in America, has a dedicated program for training robot-assisted surgery.

According to the hospital, whose board-certified Harvard Medical Schoolaffiliated physicians perform some of the highest volumes of robotic-assisted surgery in New England, found that high-volume experience provides the best outcomes for patients. Translation, the more you do—the better the results.

In addition to Mass General surgeons excelling in robotic surgery, they combine their effort with enhanced 3D visual capacity when performing delicate procedures.

Going beyond what most hospitals offer, Mass General has a Surgical Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Laboratory (SAIIL) comprised of a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, researchers, scientists, and engineers developing state-of-the-art techniques and tools to create real-time intraoperative care and achieve automatic analysis and evaluation.

With these developments, a doctor can make life-or-death decisions based on previous experience and have real-time nationwide data to assess their patients’ surgical success and post-operative health.

Under the guidance of a skilled team of medical staff making extraordinary medical decisions and using technology similar to a GPS for the body, patients will relish the added comfort they experience, knowing they are provided a standard of care unmatched by any other. H

CUTTYHUNK ISLAND’S SUMMER 2023

Islands as Muse Opens

Exciting new research has revealed stories and artistic connections to the Elizabeth Islands that many visitors might not be aware of but will be fascinated to learn about.

This year’s special exhibition, Islands as Muse–Art from the Cuttyhunk Historical Society Collection, features—for the first time—many unseen works in the collection that will inspire all who visit Cuttyhunk.

Much has been written about an intriguing connection believed to have existed between William Shakespeare and ‘The Rock,’ the name given to Cuttyhunk by visiting sailors.

Scholars, laypeople, tourists, and alike, have investigated the similarities between the Island and the writings of Shakespeare’s The Tempest to make a connection.

It’s common knowledge that in 1602, an Englishman named Bartholomew Gosnold and a crew of roughly 32 men landed on a small island (one of the many), creating the legendary Elizabeth Islands chain, located between New England’s SouthCoast, and the Island of Martha’s Vineyard.

journey upon their return to England. Likely, having read of the adventure, it’s believed Shakespeare used Cuttyhunk as a muse when penning The Tempest, most notably when he details specifics to its geography and the likeness of its isolation, wild growth, and shrubbery. Moreover, many descriptions seem to imitate life on the Island, with the meeting of ‘Natives,’ giving credence to claims Cuttyhunk was the setting for work.

Two centuries later, in 1858, Albert Bierstadt took Cuttyhunk as his muse in the dreamlike painting Gosnold on the Island of Cuttyhunk (New Bedford Whaling Museum collection), not to mention the countless artists, photographers, and writers who have also made Cuttyhunk and the Elizabeth Islands their muse.

Highly acclaimed American writer Robin Moore (1925-2008) summered at the family estate known as the Cuttyhunk Fishing Club. His legendary works include; The Green Berets (1965), The French Connections (1969), The Moscow Connection (1994) and (2003).

The 2023 season runs from Wednesday, June 28, through Tuesday, September 5, with free admission, although donations are appreciated. H

The excursion to the ‘New World’ was funded by Shakespeare’s patron, the Earl of Southampton, and included two classmates from the University of Cambridge, John Brereton and Gabriel Archer, each who wrote accounts of the
