A Different World

INCIVILITY AND NEGATIVITY ARE RISING. WHAT CAN WE DO?

People have sensed a negative change in collective behavior since emerging from the pandemic.

One observer, having their finger on the pulse of cultural affairs and who regularly meets with a broad spectrum of society and a full range of personalities while working and traveling for pleasure, says that while many people are enjoyable and helpful, there seems to be a shift in prevailing attitude.

“While driving, shopping, or trying to engage with someone about service or to buy a product, it often appears they are angry, depressed, or almost resentful, for some reason. They react by being cold, distant, unhelpful, derogatory, or sarcastic. At other times, I’ve witnessed the discourtesy of people cutting in front of others, attempting to circumvent orderly entering or leaving an event or location, and acting as if they must get ahead of everyone else. Even worse, driving has become a nightmare—and it’s dangerous.

I can’t help but notice these changes. It is as if some folks have become less socially appropriate and resistant to positive human interaction, even when approached in a non-threatening and safe manner.”

UNCIVIL WAR

Some would argue these experiences aren’t unprecedented and that we’ve simply adapted to a gradual downward spiral that may have reached yet another new normal of rude behavior.

Long before COVID, in 2013, a national survey of 1,000 US adults showed 71 percent of Americans believed civility was declining, and 70 percent believed incivility was at “crisis levels.” People reported an average of 2.4 acts of incivility per day, mainly attributed to our politicians, the Internet, young people, and the media. At that time, the researchers said our national incivility problem was evolving into epidemic proportions and becoming a “new normal in behavior.” The discord it sows within individuals [is] felt across society.1

CIVILITY IN AMERICA 2013: BY THE NUMBERS 1

81% believed the increase in incivility will lead to more violence

While 95 percent of respondents believed America has an incivility problem, 80 percent believed fixing the problem starts with our governmental leaders acting more civilly.

In 2019, our feelings remained consistent, with the same national survey finding 93 percent of Americans believing incivility was an issue, 69 percent saying it was a serious issue, and 74 percent believing incivility was getting worse. 2

In The Washington Post, however, reported opinion writer, Jennifer Rubin views the national crisis as not one of incivility, but of national character. In her mind, our politics reflect our collective behavior as “craven politicians more often than not follow the herd.”3

In USA Today, author and opinion columnist, Tom Nichols observes, “a long trend of rising narcissism and a sense of

entitlement that was enabled by peace, prosperity, and rapidly improving living standards” in America. This has led to growing impatience, selfishness, self-absorption, and violent temperament.4, 3

“The pandemic”, Nichols says, “just made things worse with a surge in mental illness.”

WHY WE BECOME NEGATIVE AND HOW TO OVERCOME IT

Cynicism, hostility, filtering (focusing on the bad in an otherwise happy experience or memory), polarized thinking (if a person isn’t perfect, they must be horrible), blaming, catastrophizing, jumping to conclusions, emotional reasoning, fallacy of change (believing you’ll be happy if others or circumstances change), and heaven’s reward fallacy (assuming you’ll always be rewarded for hard work and sacrifice, then become depressed and bitter when it doesn’t happen), are common ways negativity expresses itself.5

People often become negative from depression and insecurity or low self-worth. It can also grow from chronic illness, traumatic life events, substance abuse, and personality disorders.5 Yet other reasons for negativity and bad behavior can be more societal-based, such as never-before-seen economic inequality coupled with the uniquely American value of rugged individualism, where a person’s failure is viewed as their fault, and society owes them nothing in basic social welfare. In the end, University of California cultural studies professor Roddey Reid, Ph.D. says, we shouldn’t be surprised at the level of incivility in the US; while Pier M. Forni, Ph.D., the late founder of Johns Hopkins University’s “The Civility Initiative,” said we can shift our feelings of economic insecurity into hostility on innocent bystanders in a “kick-the-dog syndrome.”6

Negative thinking can become habitual; our brains biologically steer toward sadness. This can distort reality and reinforce negative thoughts. Yet, there are ways to break the cycle. We need to become realistic optimists, discerning what is true with the capacity to see both good and bad. We need to live in the moment, replacing negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Taking time to engage in activities that promote pleasant thoughts helps. We can act on our negativity in a positive way by trying to make a change for the better.5

Along the lines of positive affirmations, loving-kindness meditation may also effectively induce positivity. A small UK study has shown that by visualizing different individuals with a mantra promoting loving-kindness, health, and happiness, depressed people were able to retrieve positive autobiographical memories (often inhibited by depression), allowing them to be kinder to themselves and others.7

Of course, more empathy can also help us treat others with dignity and respect regardless of their station in life. Not surprisingly, research has shown that people who don’t have to interface with the public are happier than those who do.

Spending time with kind, caring people can help to instill

positivity and inspire us to spread goodness. When we do, it will resonate throughout the body and soul, promoting good health, just as negativity has been shown to promote ill health.5

KINDNESS IS CONTAGIOUS—AS IS INCIVILITY

While there are influences beyond our control, if we can change the world within us, research suggests we can change the world around us.

A study by scientists at UCLA’s Bedari Kindness Institute, established in 2019, illustrates how positive actions can radiate like sunlight. The study consisted of 8,000 people covering 15 experiments, 11 online and four in-person, on the streets of Los Angeles. Half the participants viewed the popular video “Unsung Hero,” which follows a young man’s daily life and random acts of kindness. The other half viewed a control video of impressive athletic feats. In-person participants were paid five one-dollar bills, then asked to donate to UCLA’s Mattel Children’s Hospital in an envelope while the researchers looked away. Those who viewed “Unsung Hero” gave 25 percent more than controls. 8

In an online experiment using the same model, participants were asked if they’d be inclined to give to a worthy cause if their donation was matched by their employer. Results were similar: 67 percent of “Unsung Hero” viewers versus 47 percent of controls said they’d be inclined to give. 8

Said institute director Daniel Fessler, Ph.D., “Each of us is kind to someone, and therefore has the potential to be kind to everyone—even those with whom we differ.” His team believes the impetus to spread goodness comes from “elevation,” that uplifting emotion often felt in our chests, along with goosebumps and even tears.

UCLA’s findings are supported by a large analysis of decades of research on the spread of kindness. Synthesizing results of 88 experimental studies with more than 25,000 participants who viewed or read about acts of kindness showed a moderately strong altruistic effect. People tended to act kindly when they saw others doing it. Said lead researcher Haesung Jung, “People resonate when they watch someone do something good. The message that these prosocial behaviors are quite contagious is a really important message that people should know.” The findings imply that humans are prosocial by nature but need inspiration to act.9

Likewise, research also demonstrates how bad behavior can spread like a virus.

A study on workplace incivility led by University of Arkansas management professor, Christopher C. Rosen, Ph.D., found that workers who experienced incivility (put-downs, sarcasm, etc.) earlier in the day [had] reduced self-control. This, in turn, led to them perpetuating acts of incivility later in the day.10

In another study, researchers at Sweden’s Lund University surveyed nearly 3,000 hotel and restaurant workers for a rela-

tionship between incivility, workplace satisfaction, and wellbeing. Incivility was a major driver of worker dissatisfaction, was most often done after witnessing a coworker do it, and was most likely to harm well-being when done by a supervisor.11

Overall, workplace incivility research suggests that workers are more likely to engage in rude behavior after they’ve experienced it themselves.

BECOMING MORE CIVIL

Stress is undoubtedly a significant catalyst of incivility. But as is the definition of civility, there are ways we can become more polite in our behavior and speech.

The former head of the UMass Chan Civility Committee, Yasmin Carter, Ph.D., explains four methods she believes are best at promoting civility at work and in the world at large.12

Carter suggests practicing active listening. Speaking civilly means allowing for the free exchange of ideas with respectful disagreement. Listen intently to others’ views without interruption, realizing that you may be wrong and need to admit that you don’t know something, and listening to others’ ideas and criticism may be valuable.

Pick your battles wisely. Not every occasion is appropriate for heated discussion. Ask yourself if it will benefit the other person and yourself or only cause harm. Will criticism be constructive?

Stand up to uncivil behavior. Hold perpetrators of bad behavior accountable, which can be done politely and with determination. Even if the uncivil behavior doesn’t stop, the show of support can make an impact.

Practice gratitude. Noticing even small examples of beauty and looking at the bright side of circumstances takes practice for many, but research shows it can be uplifting for us and others.

How important is acting and speaking civilly? History is rife with examples showing that the very existence of a society depends on getting along.

IS YOUR PARTNER HIGH-VALUE?

Suppose you spend time on social media, particularly TikTok or Instagram. In such a case, you’ve probably heard—and watched, countless reviews and personal recommendations by those pretending to be relationship experts, who often share faulty advice as to how and where to find and hook onto what has flooded the vernacular as ‘High-Value’ men and women. Unfortunately, these cultural Gurus focus on appearances and perceived wealth when looking for a connection rather than evaluating emotional integrity, reliance, and other vital behavioral traits.

We have become a society engulfed with unrealistic illusions of what perfect men and women look and act like. What’s missing is attention that should be paid to the red flags that appear when meeting someone you’d like to pursue long-term.

Searching for the ideal mate, based on conversations and tips offered to a confused audience, abound; here is one

of the most egregious pieces of advice we’ve heard. “Girl, you want a man who can afford to treat you like your worth; he’s got to have money, a couple of houses, nice cars, and bring you on vacations—not just around the block but International travel to start—that’s High-Value!” Interestingly, missing from the list is any mention of emotional connections; the only concern seems to be about the ‘Benjamins.’

From the man’s point of view (one with similar misconceptions about partnering), the picture is similarly shallow; they want a woman on their arm who looks and acts like an escort— but behaves like the proverbial nun; she has to be trustworthy and loyal, dresses like she’s hitting 5th Avenue for a day of shopping 24-7, and will bed him upon request, in between cooking, cleaning and putting up with his childish antics.

If these examples sound farfetched, take a step back and look at the list of celebrities, actors, actresses, millionaires, and billionaires the paparazzi are exposing. The photographers, PR people, and gossips share stories of hangers-on chasing fame and money in the hope of

tying the knot, even if temporary, with a calculated plan for a payout later.

Here is what the formula looks like: Take the age of the couple, divided by two; this equals a 30+ year difference, add an income ratio of one partner’s net worth ($10) to the others ($10 to the power of 10 = $10 billion US), subtract alimony, child support, and living expenses deducted from an un-enforceable prenup agreement and, well, you get the picture.

Is it a sign of the times or misguidance?

It’s difficult to identify, but it fits the narrative of current research showing half of marriages ending in divorce, 20 percent participate in one or more affairs, another 20 percent are unhappy but stay in the unsatisfying relationship, leaving roughly 10 percent who enjoy their partner’s company. Such statistics indicate couples are making serious mistakes when choosing a love source.

The truth about what it takes to be a High-Valued person of interest may sound antiquated—even listless. Still, if that’s the intended objective, it is a sure way of finding compatibility and happiness for a long time.

Before we delve into the qualities singles should include in their search; it should be noted that the person you choose to share your time, even life with, will have an unrealized influence upon you, making it essential to find a suitable match. There’s nothing worse than ending a failed relationship 10 or 20 years after, finding yourself at the starting gate again.

Who’s Wealthy, Who’s Rich; Is There A Difference?

Being wealthy or rich (I’ll explain later) is more than having money; it’s connected to the degree of comfort and contentment one feels. And, while everyone has heard “money doesn’t buy happiness,” there’s proof the quote is false; assets and cash flow provide a necessary support system delivering opportunities that are quite pleasant.

Still, it’s critical to understand that even with millions in the bank, everyone

experiences waves of anger, heightened anxiety, a barrage of disappointment, and ruminating thoughts, “If I only had more money.” We’re humans, and there is no escaping our constant need to reach for greater satisfaction.

Don’t fret; the highs you’ll experience by hoarding cash will hopefully smooth the edges of those difficult days.

Before we begin, let’s rank how many achieved the financial success they desired in years past; sure, a few of these tactics might appear dated, but many of the world’s wealthiest built their

fortunes utilizing these techniques:

These examples may not be precisely in the order you’d view them. Still, they get the point across that the steps necessary to become affluent have been modified over generations and a marathon of cultural changes.

Is there a difference between being rich versus wealthy?

There sure is, and I’m pleased to report that being wealthy is better because it’s built on a foundation of future security, while being rich is subjective, equated to running on a treadmill; when you stop, so does the cash.

WEALTHY PEOPLE INVEST, RICH PEOPLE SPEND

You might believe the words rich or wealthy are interchangeable, but I assure you they’re not. Each lifestyle is vastly different; one spends rigorously on flaunting their newfound rewards,

referred to as ‘nouveau riche,’ a term founded in ancient Greece, while the other focuses on sustainability for themselves and their legacy, their money comes from the monetary practices of their lineage, not a paycheck.

The thought processes of each group are simple to understand; those with actual wealth live in the future, while the rich live in the moment. Each group has money to splurge, but often, the spendthrifts go broke far more frequently than those with a long horizon.

When comparing the two mindsets, factors related to income, net worth, debt, and liabilities are markedly different. Expenses take up a majority of a rich person’s monthly income due to an extravagant lifestyle. In contrast, wealthy people have control over their expenses, with monthly earnings making little difference to their bottom line. A rich person might yield a greater income, but their net worth pales to a wealthy person.

Wealthy people don’t take loans; they are the bank; their purchases are made in cash, and the only interest they concern themselves with is earning potential through investing or loaning others their money.

The rush to catapult attention to oneself and capture feelings of exuberance by attracting followers on whatever media platform suits their taste, being seen in the right bar or restaurant, or getting into the most notable club, often results in a hard landing at the most unpredictable moments; the news is filled with personal tragedies.

As for those willing to act and plan for a steady climb in stature and assets, here are a few tips.

1. H ave a working plan; outline the steps you need to take to create wealth. Budget, save, and invest as often as time and resources allow; make it part of your lifestyle, and it will quickly become second nature

2. Budget and stick to it. Be conscious of every dollar you spend and aware of each you save. There’s nothing wrong with amping up your lifestyle at times—enjoying yourself is a gift, but examine how you can live well and not be foolish with expenditures; respect for money is vital to creating wealth.

3. H ave goals and monitor them frequently. As your efforts become a reality, your level of motivation will continue to grow exponentially. Such a cycle will yield positive results.

4. P urchase assets, not liabilities; real estate, yes, a $250,000 Porsche— probably not.

5. D on’t borrow money and keep your debt to near zero. Some will tell you paying interest on loans while investing your money makes sense. Yes, it can make sense under specific conditions, but not in the early stages of developing a plan. The goal is to reduce risk, not chase it.

6. I nvest wisely and often. Timing the market is attractive, but history shows a continuous investment in equities wins the race.

Some advice I once heard, albeit not politically correct, I will modify the thought for the safety of all enjoying this feature.

A wealthy person who owned a company that had recently employed new hires found he/she/zie at a company-sponsored luncheon.

In awe of what the owner had created, one of the young executives asked how they could duplicate her/his/zir success.

Leaning back in her/his/zirs chair, she/he/zie paused and then grinned, finally responding with, “I never lost a male, female, transgender, gender neutral, non-binary, agender, pangender, genderqueer, two-spirit, third gender, and all, none or a combination of these people, chasing money; but, I have lost money chasing them!”

NEWPORT PRESERVATION SOCIETY CEO TRUDY COXE, HONORED FOR LEADERSHIP

If you hadn’t heard, and you indeed should have, the head of the organization that operates one of the most high-profile attractions worldwide was recently awarded the Trinity Rep’s Pell Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Arts. At a gala held in Providence, Rhode Island, Trudy Coxe, and three other residents were recognized for their contributions and advocacy to improving life for Rhode Islanders and all who visit the Ocean State.

A significant milestone for Coxe, she joins the ranks of others demonstrating a commitment to the community, including actors Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen, who received the 2023 Pell Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts.

Coxe commented, “I have been to several award ceremonies in the past, and I can honestly tell you I never thought I would end up on the stage receiving a Pell Award, so this is a really special night for me.” Noting the importance of her long relationship with the late Senator Pell, who hosted numerous fundraising parties for Save The Bay while Coxe ran the highprofile organization. “I will always be grateful [to him]. More recently, there is not a day of the week I don’t think of him.”

Coxe recalled working with Danson when he visited Save The Bay to gain insights into activism and advocacy after founding the American Oceans Campaign.

As the leader of the Newport Preservation Society of Newport County, Coxe is recognized for her tireless efforts in raising millions of dollars to restore and preserve the

Newport Mansions for generations to come.

Under Coxe’s watch, implementing an aggressive plan to ensure the long-term conservation of the ‘cottages’ has become a reality. Her sucessess include:

n Achieving re-accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums—fewer than 900 of the 35,000 museums in the US are credentialed.

n Establishing a Fellows program for emerging scholars.

n Initiating a vibrant exhibition program and converting the second floor of Rosecliff into a museum exhibition space.

n Organically growing the organization’s membership from 3,800 to 48,000 supporters.

Coxe also played a crucial role in convincing HBO and Julian Fellowes to film the new historical drama The Gilded Age in Newport, making numerous locations at various Preservation Society Mansions available for filming, and hosted innumerable authorities and celebrities as speakers and guests to its 11 historic properties.
