CRI AND FLUID MANAGEMENT IN CRITICALLY ILL PATIENTS with Jennifer Loewen, MEd, DVM, DACVECC 8:00 am – 10:00 am (2 CE credits) This session is generously sponsored by Associated Veterinary Purchasing Co. Ltd. There are often many dynamic factors to consider when managing critically ill patients, with some patients requiring a “tower of power” of syringe pumps and CRIs to manage pain, support blood pressure, correct electrolyte and fluid imbalances, and more. During this lecture, the speaker will discuss some of the components of Kirby’s Rule of 20 that relate to CRI and fluid management and will explain how participants can apply the rule in practice. By the end of this lecture, attendees will be able to describe the ROSE theory of fluid management, explain why more fluids do not mean better outcomes, and discuss ways to set up CRIs in practice without a plethora of syringe drivers by using additives in fluids. Morning Refreshments 10:00 am – 10:30 am CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY ENTEROPATHY AND PANCREATITIS TREATMENT (PART I) 10:30 am – 12:30 pm with Ewan Wolff, PhD, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM) (2 CE credits) This session is generously sponsored by Associated Veterinary Purchasing Co. Ltd. 1) Feline Chronic Inflammatory Enteropathy In this talk, the speaker will discuss the diagnosis and management of feline chronic inflammatory enteropathy, primarily of the small intestinal tract, with some notes on large intestinal disease. Without going too deeply into medical oncology, the speaker will briefly touch on small-cell gastrointestinal lymphoma (primarily from a diagnostic standpoint) and a couple of other conditions to watch out for, including feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) (although this is not an FIP talk). Attendees will better understand what diagnostics can and cannot provide and which are appropriate, and be better prepared to discuss treatment options for chronic inflammatory enteropathy in cats. 2) Canine Chronic Inflammatory Enteropathy In this talk, the speaker will discuss the diagnosis and management of canine chronic inflammatory enteropathy, primarily of the small intestinal tract, with some necessary notes on large intestinal disease. The speaker will also briefly discuss some notable differentials that are not chronic inflammatory diseases, given the number of imported dogs in BC. They will also discuss several recent developments of interest. Attendees will better understand what diagnostics can and cannot provide and which are appropriate, and be better prepared to discuss treatment options for chronic inflammatory enteropathy in dogs. Lunch 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm
AFTERNOON SESSION CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY ENTEROPATHY AND PANCREATITIS TREATMENT (PART II) with Ewan Wolff, PhD, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM) (2 CE credits) This session is generously sponsored by Associated Veterinary Purchasing Co. Ltd. 3) Feline Pancreatitis In this talk, the speaker will discuss the diagnosis and management of feline acute and (mostly) chronic pancreatitis. They will touch on frustrations in the diagnosis of pancreatitis and will also discuss some potential sequelae of acute and chronic pancreatitis to watch out for. Attendees will better understand what diagnostics can and cannot provide and which are appropriate (within reason, as this is an area with limitations), and be better prepared to discuss thoughts on prognosis and treatment options for feline pancreatitis. 4) Canine Pancreatitis In this talk, the speaker will discuss the diagnosis and management of canine acute and chronic pancreatitis. They will touch on frustrations in the diagnosis of pancreatitis and will also talk about some potential sequelae of acute and chronic pancreatitis to watch out for. Attendees will better understand what diagnostics can and cannot provide, and which are appropriate (within reason, as this is an area with limitations), and be better prepared to discuss thoughts on prognosis and treatment options that are available (or, in one case, not available yet) for acute pancreatitis.
1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
