From breaking through the glass ceiling to launching successful startups, businesswomen have proven they have what it takes to succeed in the business world. In this issue, we take a closer look at Women in Business today—their achievements and the challenges they face. The rise of women in business has brought about diversity and fresh perspectives. Their unique experiences and insights fuel creativity and pave the way for future generations—inspiring young girls to be able to dream big and pursue ambitions fearlessly.

Women-led businesses are growing at a faster rate than the overall rate of business growth in the United States today. And even with all of these advances, women still face numerous challenges.

In this 17th Annual Women in Business issue, we highlight the stories of many successful women who have overcome challenges and are making a positive impact in their industries.

Seventeen years ago, our very first Women in Business issue also had five local businesswomen featured on its cover. As a matter of fact, Whitnie Cypert the owner of The Interior Collection was one of them and she’s on this one, too. She’s joined by Kelley Swing of Head Case Hair Studio, Dr. Olivia Wedel of Olivia Wedel Counseling, March Baremore of Allure Intimate Apparel, and Angela Aldridge of Jane - Southlake (read all about them starting on page 18).

We feature 90 women in our Women in Business professional profiles sections in this issue who have embraced the opportunities that have come their way. As Women in Business, we have come a long way, but there is still work to be done to ensure we have equal opportunities and recognition.

As I say every year, I hope that this issue inspires and encourages our readers to continue supporting women in business, and reach for the stars when it comes to their own professional ambitions.

Remember to surround yourself with a support system of like-minded individuals who truly believe in your vision and encourage you to reach greater heights. Oh, the places we will go!

— Ecclesiastes 5:18-19

“Behold, here is what I have seen to be good and fitting: to eat and drink, and to find enjoyment in all the labor in which she labors under the sun during the few days of her life which God gives her — for this is her [allotted] reward. Also, every woman to whom God has given riches and possessions, He has also given the power and ability to enjoy them and to receive [this as] her [allotted] portion and to rejoice in her labor — this is the gift of God [to her].”

SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY This scripture alone serves as proof that hard work pays off—especially when we enjoy what we do. However, we must be mindful that God will only bless what He has called us to do. Everything else is meaningless in His eyes, because what we set forth to do without His blessing is considered vain. As a result, we forfeit any worthwhile reward. How do we gain God’s approval and assure our profession aligns with Him? It’s simple. We must make sure our convictions—don’t compromise or contradict His Word. He promises to “confirm His Word” by sending a sign that endorses the task placed before us. Bear in mind, God will never bless us with anything that could alter our dependency on Him. He is Jehovah Jireh, Our Provider.

Balancing work, family, and personal responsibilities can be frustrating. The pressure to do it all—successfully—can be exhausting. But praise be to God for giving us the perfect example of a “Boss Lady.”

She’s found in Proverbs 31:10-31. A hardworking woman who walked earth’s runway with boldness, beauty and wisdom. A confident woman who never made a business decision without seeking God’s guidance.

A wife and mother who took extremely good care of her family. All the while, never

neglecting her own spiritual, mental, or physical needs. A woman who understood the assignment and worked diligently to fulfill her responsibilities. In Hebrews 11:6, God promises to reward “…those who diligently seek Him.” And that’s exactly what she did—personally and professionally, holding fast to the spirit of Colossians 3:23-24: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. She committed her work to the Lord, and He made sure her plans succeeded. (Proverbs 16:3) Working hard doesn't have to equate to strenuous hustle and bustle. Yet, most of us are overwhelmed with busyness when we don’t integrate our plans with God’s. Where do we find His plan? In His “employee handbook:” The Bible. God wants us to experience joy in the job He blessed us with.

Proverbs 10:22 promises that His blessings can make us rich without adding sorrow.

This means that with the right attitude, we can approach each day without stress, strain or struggle. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with working hard and earning money. We were designed to work. At the end of the day, God is on our side. He’s equipping each of us with everything we

need to live a life of true fulfillment and joy, giving us the ability to conquer any role and tackle any task—as a boss lady and as a helpmate. As women of God, we are on assignment. Our job is to follow the example He left in His handbook—the Bible.

Remembering that our works (in word or deed) are only accomplished because of His might, and not our own. We should never “…toil to acquire wealth; [but] be discerning enough to desist [it].” (Proverbs 23:4-5).

2 Timothy 4:7 promises that hard work, dedication, and staying true to your faith pays off in the end. Stick to it and you will be rewarded—God will make sure of it.

As Believers, we must be passionate about our work to ensure long-lasting success in the Lord (Romans 12:11). Psalm 128:2 promises that you will enjoy what you’ve worked hard for; you’ll be happy, and things will go well for you. God rewards those who work hard, and that can come in a variety of ways. If you continue to put in a solid work ethic, the reward will outweigh the labor.

Having a title and wearing many hats does not make us successful. Putting in the hard work and trusting God for virtuous results does! “There is profit in hard work…”

RIPE READS BOOK REVIEWS BY SANDY LOWE

Many of us have long-term friendships.

Some have even lasted since childhood, some since high school, and some since college. Love, Life and Lucille by Judy Gaman is the story of a friendship lasting almost four years. Though four years may seem brief by comparison, it turns out you can pack a lifetime’s worth of friendship into that short period of time.

LOVE, LIFE & LUCILLE

Judy Gaman met Lucille Fleming in the process of writing a book. She sought out centenarians, people 100 years old or older, to ask them the secrets to their longevity. Lucille had plenty to share that day. She recommended keeping a positive attitude, eating a healthy diet and continuing to exercise. She also listed having friends and keeping up your appearance—but Lucille had so much more to share with Judy. That one-hour visit with Lucille turned into more than three hours. Soon they began scheduling lunches together on Fridays. Before long they considered themselves the closest of friends.

As we get to know Lucille a little better, it’s not hard to understand why Judy was drawn to her. At age 100 her per-

sonality shone bright in every situation.

She loved beautiful clothes and always dressed colorfully, including a ribbon in her hair, one around her neck and a flower at her lapel. Judy’s assistant, Mary, even added photos of Lucille to her fashion blog.

Judy and Lucille see each other through difficult times—as real friends do. The crises include Lyme disease, a heart attack and a diagnosis of hyponatreamia, an electrolyte imbalance that results in a low concentration of salt. In spite of her advanced age—not all the medical issues are Lucille’s.

Throughout the book Lucille shares with Judy her “lessons learned” from a long and active life. They range from living in the moment to loving unconditionally.

The pair also get to know one another’s families. Lucille helps Judy understand her own parents better—especially her mom, who Judy had felt sometimes put her work before her children. Judy continues learning from Lucille even after she has passed away. The final lesson brings the book to a meaningful and satisfying conclusion.

WACO RENTAL FILLED WITH TEXAS TREASURES

DFW Mid-cities Chapter of Jack and Jill of America announced their first “Power To Make A Difference” Youth Advocacy Award winner as Grant Flowers, a junior at Westlake Academy. Grant was selected and recognized for his volunteer and philanthropy work in sports in Tarrant County.

Grant is an inaugural officer of a nonprofit 501c3 organization called The Cub. This organization supports inner city sports programs to provide new equipment and clothing to students in underserved communities. The belief is that equal access to sports improves health, mental focus and well-being in teens. In 2021, Grant became CEO of The Cub and has focused fundraising efforts towards a sport he loves—golf. Grant worked with the FWISD fundraising to identify schools with a large percentage of students receiving free lunch that had golf teams. He chose Diamond Hill-Jarvis as the school with a young booming golf program that expanded from five to 25 players in the last three years. “I am honored to receive the first Power To Make A Difference Youth Advocacy Award from the members of the DFW Mid-Cities Chapter of Jack and Jill of America. Engaging in our communities through volunteer and philanthropic opportunities are crucial to building a strong and vibrant Tarrant County. As a member of Generation Z, I am hopeful that more of my peers will engage in this type of volunteer work and help address the serious needs that we see in our communities” said Grant Flowers, CEO of The Cub.

Texas travel blogger Jessica Serna, better known as My Curly Adventures, and her food blogger husband Ismail Mpiana, known as My Culinary Adventures, together have opened an ice cream-themed vacation home in Waco, Texas called Casa Kumwesu. The name Casa Kumwesu roughly translates to “our place/our house/our village” and celebrates Serna’s Hispanic roots and Mpiana’s Zambian/Congolese roots. The 2,300 square foot, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home sleeps up to 8 guests and costs an average of $350/night. Tucked on several quiet acres, the sweet abode is just minutes away from the Magnolia Silos, Baylor College and Lake Waco. Full of bright colors, unique ice cream decor, and loads of sweet surprises, this home is truly one-of-a-kind. The house is an Instagrammers dream, packed with numerous photo ops sprinkled throughout. The living room is adorned with soft seating, an ice cream chair, a large TV, board games, and tons of fun ice cream-themed decor. The house features a large, fully equipped kitchen and coffee bar plus a large soaker tub for luxurious bubble baths. The couple made an effort to support small Texas businesses in every way that they could, filling Casa Kumwesu with artwork by local artists and utilizing Texas companies whenever possible. Even the soaps and shampoos are made in Texas. Serna has attracted over half a million TikTok followers and 150,000 Instagram followers with her Texas travel series and Mpiana has amassed over 50,000 Instagram followers in just one year. Coincidentally, Serna recently had an ice cream named after her at Picole Pops.

MAKE-A-WISH GOLF TOURNAMENT

DALLAS SHAKESPEARE RUNS JUNE 7 TO JULY 16, 2023

On Monday April 17th, Make-A-Wish North Texas hosted the 11th annual Wish Upon A Par golf tournament to raise funds for Make-A-Wish North Texas. The tournament, presented by Uinta Wax, featured a 4-person scramble and the opportunity to meet and interact with wish kids while celebrating the power of a wish at River Crest Country Club in Fort Worth. More than 150 people attended the tournament. “We are incredibly thankful for the generosity and support of the sponsors and individual donors in our beloved Fort Worth community,” said Teddi Wiggins, development officer at Make-A-Wish North Texas. “This event allows us to enjoy a fun day together while focusing on what matters—raising funds to grant more wishes across North Texas.” The event helped raise more than $175,000, the most of all 11 tournaments, for Make-AWish North Texas and raised awareness about the organization’s vision—which is to grant the heartfelt wish of every eligible child battling a critical illness.

This year, Make-A-Wish is actively working to grant more than 630 wishes across North Texas. Since Jerri Watt started the tournament over 10 years ago, Wish Upon a Par has raised over $1,543,000 for Make-A-Wish North Texas. Together with generous donors, supporters, staff, and the volunteers, Make-A-Wish North Texas and 57 other Make-A-Wish chapters throughout the U.S. have granted more than 330,000 wishes nationwide.

Challenges | In July of 2023, Allure will be celebrating its 20th year. Our team grew through the great recession, the pandemic and every bump in the road along the way. Even through COVID to today, the Allure Girls (which is what we call ourselves) rolled up their sleeves and were determined to not give up! We hit the phones during shutdowns, promptly offered curbside pick up and did many other innovative things to keep Allure afloat. We even had one employee, who was receiving chemo for breast cancer refuse to not work. She came in every single day, whether we were open or not to make phone calls. I believe we actually got even more motivated when others simply gave up or were just too devastated by the restrictions.

Defining Success | Over the past two years, we moved and built a new corporate office, remodeled and updated several stores, changed

and upgraded our tech and computer equipment—including our point of sale system and website—and steadily grew our business. This was obviously made possible thanks to our customers who support Allure beyond belief.

To this day, I get emotional when I think about how they propped us up. There were moments we thought our almost 20 years of love and labor was going to be gone in the blink of an eye. Here we are today having done well over 600,000 bra fittings and looking forward to the new challenges and successes that lie ahead. We will never forget them and be forever grateful for our customers. They are our success!

Giving Back | All stores regularly develop relationships with women’s shelters, advocacy groups and services for the homeless to donate gently used pajamas and bras which are greatly appreciated by those who receive them.

Life’s Experience | With over a decade of Management and District Management experience in the beauty industry, I received knowledge and training from dozens of professional beauty companies. Without realizing the connection, I noticed harmful effects of the chemicals on myself, family members, clients, salon professionals and environment. I was suffering from my own health concerns, including hair loss, chronic sinusitis and autoimmune diseases. So, I became more aware of other people around me with similar symptoms. Defining Success | My sign of success for my business is repeat clientèle and strong referrals. Many of our current projects are clients who we have been providing design services for over 15 years on multiple homes, both locally and destination. We have traveled abroad to France and Spain, as well as here in the U.S., for design inspirations, continued design education, and to bring back unique pieces that will enhance any space.

Work-Home-Life Balance | I would not consider myself anywhere close to an expert on balancing my life schedules, but I have made adjustments over my 18 years in business to help manage my time in a more even way. We recently moved our offices from Southlake to Keller, in order to be closer to my intermediate and high school sons. This move has allowed me to maximize my time at home in the mornings and after school— while still working a full day in the office.

Greatest Professional Accomplishment | Opening my own business at age 28 and growing that business over the past 18+ years is my greatest accomplishment—but a close second would be acquiring and keeping my amazing staff for over 17 of those years. A few have come and gone over the years, but our current staff has been with me 17 and 15 of those incredible years in business.

Childhood Dream Job | I dreamed of being a fashion designer when I was young and even tested those waters in college my freshman year. I was introduced to Interior Design in my introductory design classes and fell in love! I always wanted to own my own business (like my mother who is a Speech Pathologist) and have a family. With Interior Design, I felt those dreams were more attainable. I also

love working with people and developing relationships so I was quickly drawn to residential design.

The Process | My career in Interior Design is very unique, in that each day is different, each client has different needs and I strive to never repeat a design. That being said—every preparation requires a different approach.

That is one of the things I love most about my job. I am a ‘work better under a deadline or pressure’ kind of girl—always have been! So we prepare for days, weeks, and sometimes months designing, pulling material samples, creating ideabooks, photo sheets and drawings. The day before or the morning of is setting up the most impactful presentation for that specific project. Some design presentations are extremely tangible and take up our entire showroom and others are presented primarily on a computer. Either way—it is one of my favorite phases of the project. I consider it a thrill to win over a skeptical husband or convince a client to step out of their comfort zone.

In My Free Time | I wish I had time for a steady hobby or spa day—but with baseball playing boys we spend most of our evenings and weekends at the ballpark. Our time with friends and family is enough to recharge the soul for another week of work. But I do love a good facial or pedicure!

Words To Live By | I turn to prayer and scripture often in my business and personal life, but there really isn’t one specific scripture or quote I turn to most—it depends on the situation. I do believe we are all put on this earth to provide a little bit of light to those around us. I always put my family and friends ahead of work needs and I appreciate that in return from our clients and staff. I enjoy what I do and I strive to bring that joy to those around me!

You Can Feel Better, Think More Clearly and Move Forward with Focus and Intention Olivia Wedel, PhD, LPC, NCC, LCDC, PMH-C is helping women feel hopeful with a renewed sense of purpose and joy by providing specialized services in prenatal and perinatal mental health and planning for postpartum care.

Specialty | My business specialization is serving women and mothers through various life transitions with focus around prenatal, perinatal, and maternal mental health. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and a National Certified Counselor, I completed training and certification through Postpartum Support International in Perinatal Mental Health, which allows me to provide specialized services for postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. I work primarily with postpartum depression, anxiety and rage.

In addition to the provision of therapeutic services, I provide a variety of non-clinical support services to help mothers, families, and the community. I work with community organizations and agencies to train employers on postpartum mental health and supporting families. I also offer training to professionals such as chiropractors, massage therapists, doulas, pelvic floor physical therapists, and other birth workers on recognizing signs and symptoms of perinatal distress. Being able to screen and support mothers during the postpartum time frame prevents prolonged distress and can save lives, and I feel strongly about having conversations to reduce stigma and promote access to care.

Mental Health and Birth | Mental health must be included in your birth plan, but most of the time it’s left out entirely. Then moms are caught off guard and unprepared when they start to experience symptoms after having a baby. Having a realistic plan for sleep and nutrition is essential. I work with moms and dads to develop flexible, but sustainable postpartum plans tailored to their needs. These plans are done anywhere from one to three sessions and may be done either virtually or in person.

Defining Success | Success is being able to arrange my schedule so that I can take my son to school, spend time with him in the evenings, and occasionally take a nap with him during the day. Success is being able to set my hours in a way that allows time where I’m intentional with my clients, but also intentional with my family outside of the office—able to do things that replenish my spirit and bring me joy, because that in turn helps me better serve my clients.

Challenges | Initially, the biggest challenge was building a business from scratch during the pandemic. It was really hard to network and market myself when I had no childcare outside of my husband’s availability, and my son had some respiratory issues, so I was very careful about doing large attendance events in person.

Finding affordable office space for someone starting out was another challenge—and I really love where I’m at inside Grapevine Birthing Center. It’s a really peaceful, calm place.

Work-Home-Life Balance | One of my professors and mentors in graduate school told us once that balance is a myth—and as a working mom—I tend to believe him!

Greatest Professional Accomplishment | Outside of getting my Ph.D. from TCU in 2017, I consider my greatest professional accomplishment the fact I opened my own business, a private practice in counseling, during the pandemic when I also gave birth in the same year. When I reflect on the year 2020, I still cannot believe I accomplished what I did, but by the grace of God, I managed and it’s so wonderful to see my business continue to grow and flourish.

Good Reads | I have written four parenting courses that will be available this summer online and in person: “Babies & Biology;” “What About the Dads;” and “Two P’s in a Pod: Prenatal and Perinatal Mental Health.”

Childhood Dream Job | I wanted to be a librarian because reading has always been one of my favorite things. I consistently won the summer reading program awards in school, and I loved going to the library. I read to learn and relax. Even though I chose an entirely different career path, I really like that being a therapist gives me a chance to read—a lot!

Words To Live By | “Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly” is scripture I live by and incorporate it into my life personally and professionally.

My favorite quote is by author Anne Shirley: “Tomorrow is always fresh with no mistakes in it.” We can always try again tomorrow.

What is the James Landscaping Design and Installation Process?

The Process | It is a deliberately and carefully planned process that will result in reinventing, repurposing or revitalizing your personal surroundings. From the time you set an appointment to the completion of your installation, you can expect the process to take approximately 6 months. What are the key steps? Read below to get the details.

Set an Appointment | (Typically, we schedule appointments several weeks out): Our design process begins when you make a call to set an appointment, after which you will receive a new client questionnaire (similar to new patient paperwork at the doctor’s office). Your answers to the questionnaire will help our sales representative prepare for the site visit and also help our designers to understand any concerns or design aesthetic you prefer. Please know that we require a property survey before we visit in order to complete the evaluation accurately.

Site Visit | (Client only required for the 1st hour; reps can be there much longer!): During the site visit, our sales rep will meet with you to discuss your landscape issues and wishes. We will decide together if a full-color, CAD landscape design is needed or if it is possible to make a proposal without a design.

During the visit, our sales representatives will take detailed notes, evaluate any issues, take photos, and even film a short video to describe your existing landscape and design requirements.

Design | (12-15 weeks): During the site visit, you would have signed a design agreement that details the price of the design, the scope and the design timeline. Our designers will review the site notes, photos and videos and create your new custom landscape on a full color, CAD-generated design.

Zoom Design Presentation | (.5-1.5 hours): A few days before the ZOOM presentation, we deliver a folder that includes your design, installation proposal, plant photos, plant care instructions, and a lighting catalog. We give you this time to review

the design so you will be familiar with it at the presentation. During the ZOOM presentation, our sales representatives will review the design with you and answer any questions you may have. We offer installation phasing so you do not have to install the whole design at one time. Once you are ready to proceed, you sign the proposal and place a down payment to get on the installation schedule.

Depending on the time of year, work could begin anywhere between a couple of weeks and six weeks.

Installation | (depending on the size of your design… maybe one week, more or less): This is the most exciting part! We will transform your landscape to the specs of your design. We have the best crews in the business—sorry to be so bold but it is true. Some of them have been with us for over 20 years. They know landscaping and they will respect your property. The crew will leave your property clean at the end of every day and the installation progress will be evident.

Work-Home-Life Balance | I believe balance is somewhat of an illusion. It’s never a 50:50 balance—there will be times where we need to allow more energy for work and times where more energy needs to be directed towards our own self-care and our home life. Letting go of the expectation of balance has helped me the most. I can now tune into my intuition and flow between the spaces I am needed most without any regret or resentment.

Making A Difference | When it comes to charitable work, I had the opportunity to spend six months volunteering in Zimbabwe. I truly cherish those memories as they have continued to give me humility in my daily life. I was really lucky to have discovered my life’s passion and purpose at only 20 years old. Working in the health and wellness industry is a dream come true. I now get to live my dream every single day serving my purpose and helping others to reclaim their health!

Work-Home-Life Balance | Ha, I don’t really have balance! Some days I’m killing it at work and my husband takes over at home, and some days I’m killing it at home and my team takes over at work. Asking for help and delegating is so hard for me, but I know that it’s necessary if I want to grow my business. We close the week after New Years and for Spring Break every year so that we can all have time with our families. I love that my kids see me doing what I love! Hopefully by watching me build this business from a board on my kitchen island to a brick and mortar location, they will set goals for themselves too someday.

Greatest Professional Accomplishment | Moving from a small brick and mortar to a bigger brick and mortar location in Roanoke. I wanted to be able to have a space where I could host fun

events (I love a theme) and bring back in-person gatherings post 2020. It was 3am mornings and blood, sweat and tears—literally! But, every time I walk into my new shop I am so grateful!

Making A Difference | I had my oldest son as a single Mom at 20 and luckily I had family support, but not everyone does. That’s why I love to support anything that helps young moms.

Embrace Grace is a current favorite of mine.

Challenges | The pandemic closures caused many challenges, but the trainers still had clients that wanted to workout. So, they got creative and trained clients in the garage at Kim’s house. They pulled benches, boxes, weights, jump ropes and bands and worked out there for six weeks until they could reopen the gym to members.

Work-Home-Life Balance | With the gym being open seven days a week, she tries to stay away on the weekends with the exception of her personal workouts. Her four dogs are fine if she’s away during the day... as long as they get her at night and on the weekend!

Impact Performance and Fitness

Making A Difference | Kim supports a lot of animal and children’s charities. She has four rescue dogs, so it’s close to her heart! The honors from her corporate gig were a while ago, but they are on a shelf in her office at home as a reminder of the success from that part of life.

Childhood Dream Job | As a kid, Kim thought she wanted to be a veterinarian because she loved animals.

Then, she realized it would be too hard to lose patients!

Jessica Serna BLOGGER / WRITER / PHOTOGRAPHER Specialty | I’m the Creative Mind, Blogger, Writer, Photographer, and Face of My Curly Adventures—a Texas-based travel brand that has been inspiring people to find magic in the everyday and encouraging people to live a travel lifestyle even with a 9-5 through looking for local getaways. While my focus has been Texas, I love finding fun and unique destinations near and far.

Through social platforms, along with bringing amazing travel destinations, I’ve been able to support, inspire and encourage women—especially Latinas and women of color, to go after their dreams of travel. Working in collaboration with others shows strength and unity and builds some great friendships along the way.

Defining Success | Success has come at several stages of my life. The biggest was finding the courage to quit my job to fully pursue the travel career that I had dreamed of. From there—with determination and persistence— I spent all my time learning and piecing together the necessary skills including things like SEO, pitching to brands, enhancing my writing and photography skills, and overall business management. Every piece of knowledge, and every positive message or testimonial from a follower, is a success in my book. I believe it is important to stop and acknowledge your accomplishments along the way.

Work-Home-Life Balance | Work-life balance is always a struggle. You would think that since I travel most of the time that I would be able to relax and enjoy all of the places I visit. However, when I am traveling, I’m planning, writing, capturing photos, exploring the details of each location, along with many other aspects of my business.

It can be a bit chaotic, so my husband and I try to plan one or two days in between trips to stay home and just relax, or spend time with family. Putting down the phone and stepping away from technology is the key.

Challenges | One of the challenges I’ve experienced is showing how we are valuable, establishing the fact that while we get to travel, it is still a lot of work to provide high quality content and run it as a legitimate business.

We have built a strong brand with multi-media outputs and diverse products, as well as built a team who get to work remotely and complete their work on their own schedule—while getting to travel as well.

Giving Back | Some of my favorite charities are Vickery Meadows and their Eagle Scholars program which helps youth in Dallas go to college. Bonton Farms is another favorite. They do a lot of community outreach providing food and homes for people experiencing homelessness.

Dream Vacation | My dream vacation would be anywhere by the water where we can relax—staying at hotels or lodging with spas and activities. I love to travel to Mexico and South America, learning the cultures and expanding my Spanish-speaking ability.

Defining Success | A lot of people might say I’d define success as my cookbook or major brand deals, like when Disney sponsored my channel, but to me success comes from wanting to do something and having it turn out exactly as it did in my mind. Social media is a tricky business.

You’re at the mercy of the algorithm. But when I dream up something crazy, like how to host a Jurassic Park party with dinosaurs and it turns out even better than I could have imagined, that’s a win.

Challenges | I’m a one woman show! When people watch episodes of The Rose Table, I don’t think they realize that I’m directing, filming, cooking, and hosting all at once. I edit all of the content. I photograph all of my recipes. I do every part of it—and it’s exhausting!

Greatest Professional Accomplishment | As a lifelong Disney lover, my greatest accomplishment has to be partnering with Disney. When I started Disney Dinners, The Rose Table only had 10,000 fans. When my very first episode—Frozen—got 10,000 views, I knew I had something special. My Alice in Wonderland episode went viral on Facebook and I ended up getting a video contract with Meta that changed my life. A month after I finished the year-long series, Disney reached out to me and has since sponsored three episodes: Mary Poppins Returns, Captain Marvel, and Maleficent Mistress of Evil. The Rose Table now has over 300,000 fans across platforms and over 30 million video views last year alone.

Work-Home-Life Balance | It’s difficult when you work from home. In addition to running The Rose Table, I also own a PR company. I work a lot of 12-15 hour days.

I’m admittedly a workaholic, but I love what I do so I’m kind of always working. I think the key is to do something you’re so passionate about, you never feel like you’re working. I also make time to be outside every single day. I walk my dog, garden, play with my horses… being outside really grounds me and gets my eyes away from screens.

I feel like a new woman after an hour with my horse!

Giving Back | I’m a huge patron of the arts and there are so many wonderful organizations like Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Shakespeare Dallas that do so much to introduce children to the arts.

My Last Meal | Probably my grilled lobster tails with ginger lime beurre blanc, roasted potatoes, and filet mignon. And we can’t forget dessert! A big slice of my Chocolate Lavender Dream Cake. Mmm. Now that’s a perfect meal in my book!

Defining Success | For me, success is when you have loyal clients who come back year after year, who respect and value your work, and that feeling you get when they love their images so much that they are near to tears.

Work-Home-Life Balance | To be honest, the edges are very blurred. I set boundaries although they are not set in stone. Part of my life surrounds dog rescue and I’m a ‘special needs and hospice’ foster for various rescues in the U.S. By it’s very nature, that role is not 9-5 and sometimes I travel long distances to bring a dog back for care. By the same token, photography commitments are not always 9-5. I pride myself on being very flexible in accommodating client needs. My day starts

early but even days I don’t need to be up, I enjoy that extra hour or two spending time with my wonderful dogs. They give me so much joy and love that it sets me up for my day—and with my 7 dogs plus two fosters that’s a whole lotta love!

Challenges | Many challenges starting anew in a foreign land. I’m British and when I moved here from England almost two decades ago I was on a visa with my (also British) husband so I was allowed to live here, but not work. The first few months I could go nowhere nor do anything. It was tough, but I had my camera so it was put to good use and saved my sanity!

Giving Back | I support many dog rescues, by fostering, donating (money or my photography skills for fundraising events and calendars). My husband and I also have a small beekeeping business and 25% of all proceeds goes to various local dog rescues.

Words To Live By | Life is like a camera. Just focus on what’s important and capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.

What Clients Can Expect | First meeting is a fact finding exercise about what the client wants, expectations and goals. It’s a friendly, very relaxed meeting in person, or by phone. Then a follow up written communication outlining and agreeing to the shoot plan (date, time, location, costs, contingencies).

It’s very fluid and efficient, and completely stressfree. I communicate well with my clients so there are no surprises. Shoots themselves are typically relaxed and most clients think they’re even fun!

At The End of a Long Day… I have all the fun I need doing my photo shoots and activities with my dogs. But if I have an hour at the end of the day, I practice my violin. A skill I’ve been trying to master for years. Progress is slow, but I enjoy using a different part of my brain. My deaf fosters commonly sit with me as I tickle the strings—I guess they won’t mind if I’m off key!

SOCIETY LIFE: What’s one of your earliest memories you have of your Mom? JADE STOCKER: The holidays!

Christmas especially, growing up my mum would go all out for the holiday season and family traditions. Now that I have Luna, I’m so excited to introduce those traditions into my own family, and add new ones of course!

SL: What’s something you thought about Motherhood that was totally wrong?

JS: I really thought juggling work and motherhood would be easy. Mum guilt is real! But I am learning to give myself grace and not put too much pressure on myself.

SL: What’s something you always wanted to do but didn’t... and why didn’t you? JS: When I first moved to the U.S. from London, England 12 years ago my plan was to work and save money, then go back-packing for a year. Little did I know I would meet my fiancé here, then decide to stay in America—and the rest is history!

SL: Was there something your Mom did when you were a kid that you swore you’d never do as a parent? JS: Nagging, haha! But really, her being a working single mum I never really appreciated all that she did. Being a mother myself now, I look back on those years slightly differently.

Since I am able to work from home, I hope that I’m able to spend more time with Luna rather than being away from her working.

SL: What did you think you wanted to be when you grew up? JS: A fashion buyer. Before becoming a real estate agent I worked as a store manager in luxury retail.

I have always loved fashion.

SL: How have your notions of what it means to be a Mom changed over your lifetime? JS: Before becoming a mother, I had this picture perfect idea in my head of what it was going to be like. I thought it was like the highlight reels you see on Instagram, but instead I’m showing up to the office in the same outfit from the day before with spit up on my shoulder!

SL: What’s the best family vacation you’ve ever taken? JS: I have had so

many great ones. In 2017 I took a trip home to the UK, a few days after being there Johstin flew over and surprised me. He had planned out everything and came with us on our family holiday to Palma Majorca and proposed on a small dock on the Mediterranean Sea. I’m very excited to go on our first family beach vacation with Luna this year!

SL: Is there a moment or event that radically changed the way you saw Motherhood? JS: : I have been a mum for such a short time, but the bond that I feel with my tiny human is something I never would have imagined. She is by far my greatest achievement and I feel very lucky to be her mum.

SL: When did you know you were ready to have kids? JS: When I was younger I thought I’d be ready in my mid-twenties.

That came and went and I was definitely not ready because I was focused on work. I think when I turned 30, I felt like “Okay, I can do this.”

SL: What’s your favorite photo of your family or kids? JS: When Luna was born, Johstin took a selfie of the three of us. I don’t think I even knew what was happening in that moment, but that picture will always be so special.

SL: What was the first year of motherhood like for you? JS: Life has changed so much! It’s only been a few months but it’s been a whirlwind of emotions—both amazing and exhausting! The hardest, but most rewarding job.

SL: What do you want or wish most for your kids? JS: For her to live life to the fullest, travel, experience different cultures and to live out her dreams.

SL: What are some of your biggest struggles as a Mom? JS: Trying to juggle everything! Making sure that I’m giving Luna the attention she needs, along with working, being a good fiancé, dog mum, keeping the house clean and making time

for myself and my health. I have newfound appreciation for all the mothers out there!

SL: What would your perfect day off be like?

Describe it. JS: Family day! Exploring a new city—eating delicious food on a patio in the sun.

SL: What’s the one song that means the most to you? JS: Taylor Swift’s Never Grow Up. SL: What advice would you give to your younger self about Motherhood? JS: Time flies, treasure every moment! Don’t be so hard on yourself and take the help—the first few months are an especially wild ride and any kind of respite is much needed.

SL: Is there a quote, saying, words of advice or scripture you consider words to live by?

JS: “Life is what happens to you, when you are busy making other plans.” – John Lennon.

I have a tendency to want to control every outcome and always look to the future, so this quote reminds me to live in the moment.

SL: If you could share a meal with any woman past, present or future who would it be? Why? JS: My grandma. Living overseas and being away from family is hard. Modern technology definitely helps, especially when we FaceTime. But having Luna makes me miss even more not having my family closeby. We have always had a great bond and she is hilarious!

SL: What Mom from real-life or even TV/movies do you admire most? JS: I can’t think of one mum that I admire the most. All mothers out there deserve admiration!

SL: At the end of a long day, what do you do for fun or relaxation? JS: Winding down with a hot bath and then binging a Netflix show and eating a delicious dinner. ........................................................................

Twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, we host a kid-centric party. It’s a good thing we have a kid. If we didn’t, it would be strange. We won’t hold these parties much longer. Our 11-year-old daughter, Revi, will soon be a teenager. Our house is rather small.

Our backyard is fewer square feet than our house, so we tend to host parties in our front yard. A critical element of the spring party is the attempted enhancement of our home’s curb appeal. The beautification, as with so much in life, begins with mulch. My apologies if you are a neighbor and are not invited to the party. This story is not about you, though I guess it could be. It is about mulch. I dread purchasing and laying mulch. I will not focus on laying it. It’s a dirty process. My wife believes I should pay to lay it. I shouldn’t have to pay to lay it, so I will focus on purchasing the bags of mulch.

This year the procurement experience began when I arrived at the garden center of a local big-box retailer. Due to the expansive size of the garden center, I was not able to immediately locate a register where I could pay for the mulch. Fortunately, an employee was nearby. According to her name tag, her name was “Marge.” She was no ordinary employee.

Marge was in her 80s and was lounging in a Rascal. A Rascal is an electric mobility scooter that can be modified into a formidable all-terrain vehicle. Holstered in the Rascal was a can of Pringles, a 48 oz. Sonic limeade, and an oxygen tank. An oscillating fan hummed beside her. She was engrossed in, judging by its cover, a trashy romance novel. Her mouth held a cherry stem that she flipped from end-to-end as though it was a toothpick. Unsure if she was on a break, or if she had broken out, I took a chance and I asked where I could pay for mulch. She responded in riddle and said, “Not here, not near, walk past the underwear.” I embarked on my journey. I purchased two pairs of euro-briefs and 32 bags of mulch. I returned to the garden center to load the mulch into my car.

As I lifted the eleventh bag of mulch into the car, I heard the electric buzz of the Rascal approach. Marge came to a screeching hockey-stop two inches from my shins and insisted that I provide proof of payment before I dare load another bag into the car. I handed her the receipt, scoffed at her feeble ways, and continued to load the car. Her computer-like brain counted 34 bags. I corrected her and informed her that I only purchased 32 bags. Then, nonsensically, in a rather strong-armed tone she demanded that I purchase an additional two bags. I planned to buy another two bags anyway.

I thought it best not to argue. She abruptly swiveled the Ras-

cal with enough g-force to make an astronaut cry. As she peeled away, she sent me a warning message. Her oxygen bottle became unseated and slammed against my car.

I returned to the car 15 minutes later with a receipt for two more bags of mulch. It was two too many. My muscles ached.

As I prepared to load the bags into the car, I heard the threatening buzz of the Rascal. Before she could ask, I presented her with my receipt. She smiled and said I reminded her of Herc U. Lees, a character from the book she was reading. She began to make odd mouth motions as if she was chewing cud. With a hacking cough she dislodged from her mouth a knotted cherry stem and spit it in my direction. Then she aggressively whipped two-fingers into the air in approval of the two bags, as a signal to her gang, or to gesture the new peace between us. Perhaps it was all three.

If you’re looking for a budget friendly and memorable experience in the Texas Hill Country, this cabin is just the spot. Don’t forget to check out some of the other incredible places to stay in Dripping Springs as well as all of the fun things to do in Dripping Springs.

Sometimes the magic is found in some of the smaller towns—there was actually so much to do in Dripping Springs that we had to go back twice and still didn’t get to do quite everything we wanted.

Many people might know about Dripping Springs because of the famous Hamilton Pool that you have to make a reservation for months in advance. However, you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t spend a couple of days to explore all of the other amazing things to do here. Of all things I expected to find in Dripping Springs, I can confidently say that a 200-year-old Vietnamese courthouse was pretty close to the bottom of my list. However, Tillies offers luxury dining in the Hill Country. As soon as you walk in, you’re greeted by ornate teal doors that lead to another country.

The restaurant itself was transported from Vietnam to Dripping Springs by the owner and filled with other antiques from around the world. You could simply enjoy this place for the views. Yet you would be missing the food. American fare mixed with Asian influences make the menu truly unique. We savored each bite of the grilled beef short rib with hot shiitake mustard and tagliatelle and wished we could try one of everything. The drinks incorpo-

rated local distilleries such as the Agua De Campo using sotol from Desert’s Door and the Amalfi Thymes which used Dripping Springs gin. Afterwards you could order desert or head outside to make s’mores by the fire. Looking for a little thrift shopping or cute boutiques? You can spend a lazy afternoon wandering through Historic Mercer Street. Visit the 1854 homestead of Dr. Pound at the Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead. The Pounds were a founding member of Dripping Springs and helped lay the foundation of the town. The house remained with them for four generations, and 90% of the artifacts came from the family making the home personal and a great representation of the times!

Hamilton Pool Preserve doesn’t need many words. If you’re a Texan, it’s probably already on your bucket list. Created when an underground river collapsed, Hamilton Pool is a historic and oneof-a-kind site. To plan the perfect getaway to Hamilton Pool, here are a couple of notes. In the Summer months you have to make a reservation as early as 2-3 months ahead of time (especially for weekends). You can choose either a morning or evening slot.

Because of its popularity, I expected it to be incredibly packed.

However, on the day of our reservation, we arrived just as it opened and for the first 30 minutes there were maybe 10 people total. After that it still didn’t get full until two hours later, and even then, it never got overwhelmingly crowded. If you want complete relaxation, make sure to get there early to be one of the first people. Hamilton Pool is a stunning site to be seen. However, years of human activity have caused the greenery and wildlife to fade away and have left this place pretty barren. Right next door is the Westcave Discovery Center. Here they take you on tours to discover the relatively untouched beauty of the Westcave grotto.

I’m so glad they were able to preserve this so we can enjoy it’s natural wonder. It also serves as a powerful lesson on our impact on the environment and our need for conservation.

I’ve always had a love for olives, but the Texas Hill Country Olive Company helped me grow a true appreciation for the work that goes into olive oil. You can go in any day of the week and try these local olive oils, eat from their cafe, and enjoy olive oil gelato (sounds weird, tastes great!) However, the real treat is going on the Olive tour where you can see the trees and the olives growing on them depending on the season, learn about the different types of olives and see the process of making the olive oil. Since Dripping Springs is so close to Austin, there’s naturally quite a bit of Austin influence. We stopped at the food truck park which had several different options, but our favorite was Razas Food Shack.

If you’re looking for breakfast tacos, this is the place to go. For less than $3, one taco is more than enough, and on top of your traditional breakfast tacos, they have funky cool toppings for something different.

Dripping Springs might be named after the springs at the Milk House Branch of Edwards Aquifer, but it almost could be named after the abundant options for distilleries in one place (probably the first option, but still). Check out all of the amazing distilleries in the Dripping Springs area. In addition to the abundant distilleries, there are even more wineries. There are different wine tours in the area, but my favorite option is through Austin Wine Tours where you can hire a chauffeur in one of their vehicles and choose your own path. Check out all of the wineries in Dripping Springs.

Part of the reason I keep coming to Dripping Springs is all of the cool places you can stay, plus all of the fun things to do. Dripping Springs has some of the most unique places to stay in Texas.

From a fairy tale house to a safari themed house and more, there are so many cute options for a fun getaway whether you want to get out or just relax in your cool rental for a weekend. Put Dripping Springs on your summer road trip list.

Dallas Athletes Racing WW Military Miles 5k, 10k and Half Marathon

Heroes are remembered, but legends never die. In 490 B.C.E., during the Greco-Persian Wars, a Greek soldier named Pheiddipedes was told to make haste and run 25 miles to Athens to deliver news of Greece’s victory over Persia. The town he departed from was called Marathon. Legend has it he ran without a single stop, delivered his message, and dropped dead on the spot. The Marathon was born.

In 1894, inspired by this legendary feat, the newly formed International Olympic Committee (IOC) added the Marathon into its Athletic category. Seventeen athletes from five countries competed in that Marathon. Ironically, the race was won by a Greek water carrier named Spyros Louis, who also became a national legend. Today, there are over 800 marathons throughout the US, with over 60 million participants. Terrestrial locomotion—or rather, walking, running, or jogging—is not only good for your health but also financially healthy for the charitable organizations they represent. Whether it’s a 5k, 10k, half, or full Marathon, competitive racing connects competitive spirits to philanthropic foundations. Race participants are always ready to spend their calories for a cause. It’s why Dallas Athletes Racing (DAR) wants you to come out and join them for their 15th Annual WW Military Miles 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon that starts and finishes in front of Keller Town Hall. The event benefits three military charities: Fisher House Foundation, WWP, and Team RWB (Team Red, White & Blue). The ‘happenings’ begin at 6:45am with the Half Marathon corral followed by the 10K and then the 5K. The different starting times allow DAR to keep you safe and spread out during the race. All runners will be timed, and there will be awards for each age group. Each participant will receive a Commemorative t-shirt, world famous DAR race socks, and finishers medal.

You won’t believe how easy and delicious this banana cake is and the cream cheese frosting is absolutely to die for! Just look at how luscious the frosting is. There is something so laid-back about a sheet cake.

It’s not too fancy, not too serious, just perfect for a weeknight sweet treat. And yet served with fresh banana slices on top and a cup of decaf coffee, this cake is delicious enough to serve at a dinner party. We love a cake that can do both! Fun fact: this is one of Mama Rose Table’s recipes and was the cake she baked for my older brother’s first birthday, meaning this recipe is older than I am!

INGREDIENTS FOR THE BANANA CAKE: 2/3 cup butter, at room temperature 1 2/3 cup granulated sugar 2/3 cup buttermilk 1 1/4 cups mashed bananas, (about 2.5 medium bananas) 3 eggs 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/4 tsp baking soda 1 1/4 tsp baking powder 3/4 tsp salt 2/3 cup pecans, chopped .....................................................................

(1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

TO CHAI FOR It was a particularly chilly morning last December. It was also a particularly busy one. I had to schlep 13 goody bags and two teacher bags up to my daughter’s school for the holiday party. In the midst of wrestling my little one into a festive outfit and bow, and loading aforementioned swag, I didn’t get to finish my coffee nor did I remember to bring it for the car ride. I was exhausted, still in my robe and I remember breathing an extremely audible sigh of relief as I shut the car door after drop off. As I pulled through the school parking lot that’s shared with a few businesses, I spotted a black trailer emblazoned with ‘Chai Tea’ on the side parked in front of the church—a sight for sore mama eyes.

I honestly didn’t expect much more than a much needed caffeine kick to get me through the rest of my morning, but to my surprise this humble trailer was serving up so much more: locally hand-blended chai from two of the

friendliest folks in town. My love for chai runs deep, but making it the authentic way at home is a bit painstaking.

To Chai For is probably my favorite story to date. Owners Danny and Joy Atkisson received a chai making kit as a gift from Danny’s parents who had traveled to India on a mission trip.

Danny and Joy would have friends over for game night and make them chai tea using the recipe and spices in the kit. As time went on, Danny and Joy would experiment with the recipe adding a little more of this and a little less of that until they devised their own perfect concoction. They started their To Chai For trailer to bring this soul warming blend to the community, but it wasn’t long before the opportunity came up to take over the former Roscoe’s Coffee space in Keller. Now, with a kitchen, they have expanded their menu to include paninis and scones, in addition to their chai, coffee and waffles.

The great thing about their waffles, which come in original, churro, cheddar and cheddar bacon flavors, is that the syrup is baked into the waffle. So if you’re driving through and getting breakfast for the road, it’s truly a nomess meal you can enjoy on the go. If you’re lucky enough to stop by when the brown butter or lemon blueberry scones are in stock, grab one, because they’re a hot commodity.

Since their tea blend is hand crafted, To Chai For has ability to truly customize your chai latte. Big box coffee shops typically serve pre-fab chai blends that already contain powdered milk— meaning if you need dairy-free, it’s not possible. To Chai For offers guests almond, oat or conventional milk. They can also customize the sweetness where others cannot because the sugar is also already in the mix. If you prefer, at To Chai For you can sub stevia for sugar.

My not to be missed item here is the dirty chai latte—a chai latte with the addition of espresso. If you’ve had it anywhere else and didn’t like it, I promise you’ll change your tune after having one at To Chai For. That was me. I always thought they tasted, well, like dirt. At To Chai For, the chai is so rich and flavorful that the espresso is merely a note. It’s a great way to get your day going or as a pre-pick up line pick me up. If chai just isn’t your thing, the Dannycano is my second fave. It’s an Americano made with their housemade sweet cream.
