What does it take to outsmart cancer?

The American Cancer Society (ACS) has helped usher in an era where more people are surviving cancer than ever before. Through advocacy, research, and patient support, ACS improves the lives of people with cancer and ensures that everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat and survive it. The ACS’s core values of integrity, compassion, courage and determination are at the heart of what they do. Truth, ethics, and facts of science drive their integrity. Their compassion displays caring and support for those touched by cancer with courage undeterred by its challenges. Their determination is relentless as they continue to pursue a world without cancer. With a presence in more than 5,000 communities, the ACS has committed to living these core values in all their words, actions and decisions. Research is key. Since 1946, they have invested more than $5 billion in cancer research, all to find more and better treatments, uncover factors that may cause cancer, and improve cancer patient quality of life. Translating their research findings into action shows a 20% decline in U.S. cancer death rates since the early 1990s. This work could not be accomplished without the strength of their dedicated volunteers, who drive every part of their mission. With the support of the ACS’s professional staff, volunteers raise much-needed funds to provide essential patient support and breakthrough research that saves lives. That’s why they are excited to announce the return of their fun-filled boot-scooting event, Waltz Across Texas, on Friday, March 31. Join them for a one-of-a-kind evening featuring great food, dancing, a spectacular auction, and much more. Benefits raised that evening will go to the services that support local patients. Join the spirit of camaraderie and compassion to save lives from cancer. Every cancer. Every life!

What Is Cancer? Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells that can result in death if not treated. Although the causes of cancer development are not entirely understood, numerous factors are known to increase risk, including many that are potentially modifiable (tobacco use and excess body weight) and others that are not (inherited genetic mutations). Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease. The most common cancers are breast, colorectal, lung, prostate and skin cancers.

Can Cancer Be Prevented? A substantial proportion of cancers could be prevented, including all cancers caused by tobacco use and other unhealthy behaviors.

How much progress has been made against cancer?

Substantial progress has been made against cancer in recent decades. The best measure of this progress is the change in cancer death rates. The decline in the death rate translates into 3.8 million fewer cancer deaths from 1991 to 2020, primarily driven by progress against the four most common cancer types—lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate.
