BEAUTY FROM ASHES

Health, Wellness, Fitness & Beauty... that is the theme for our cover story in this issue. We have had many Beauty-focused issues over the last two decades of Society Life Magazine. As we again analyze beauty and it’s depth of meaning for each individual, we realize the perception of it varies as greatly as we do as humans.

Publisher

Health, Wellness, Fitness & Beauty are interwoven facets of a holistic approach to well-being. We believe that beauty is deeply influenced by our physical, mental and spiritual health. Regular fitness routines enhance this by promoting a vibrant, strong and healthy body, which in turn boosts confidence and self-esteem. Strength, both physical and mental, plays a crucial role in enabling us to tackle challenges with resilience and grace. Physical strength, achieved through consistent exercise and proper nutrition, not only sculpts the body, but also supports functional movement and overall health. Mental and spiritual strength, on the other hand, fosters a positive mindset, encourages perseverance and a balanced outlook on life. And all together, Health, Wellness and Fitness create a synergistic effect that encompasses Beauty.

Each of the three women on our cover work in one of the industries of Health, Wellness, Fitness & Beauty. Kristian Nightengale - Corinthian Wellness and Medspa, Kim Itzla - Impact Performance and Fitness, and Lauren Jackson - Renata Salons. Learn more about each of them starting on page 20.

Resilience is beautiful, strength is beautiful, and overcoming some of our deepest losses, regrets and grievances is beautiful. Beauty is so much more than just a reflection of one’s external appearance. “Beauty from Ashes’ as a metaphorical phrase signifies transformation and renewal—often from a place of devastation or hardship. Ashes represent destruction, loss, or the aftermath of a difficult experience. Beauty symbolizes hope, growth, and the potential for something positive and meaningful to arise. The phrase, rooted in scripture Isaiah 61:3, speaks of giving “a crown of beauty instead of ashes,” offering a message of redemption and the ability to find beauty and purpose—even after the most challenging and painful of circumstances. The idea that from the depths of despair or ruin, one can rebuild and find new strength and create something beautiful out of what seemed irreparably broken—now that’s truly beautiful.

The phrase “put your best face forward” was essentially derived from “put your best foot forward.” Both encourage us to present ourselves in the best light, where we are aesthetically pleasing to those who lay eyes on us. Although 1 Peter 3:3-4 suggests that beauty should come from our inner self rather than outward adornment, having a desire to be beautiful is not vain. However, relying solely on a mirror to determine our beauty can create self-absorption.

When we fail to focus on God, we tend to see things through our own eyes instead of His. As a result, the enemy magnifies our flaws and persuades us to change things that God desires to remain “untouched.” In Ecclesiastes 9: 8, we are encouraged to always look our best, giving evidence that God is okay when we dress up and invest in our outward appearance. But He expects us to dedicate the same amount of attention to our inward being.

God urges every Believer to “shine” within so that others observe their good works and give Him the glory (Matthew 5:16). Unfortunately, there are times when our light is masked behind mainstream ensembles and popular apparel. It’s no secret that the world has convinced women that “If you got it, flaunt it.” But for the woman of God, 1 Timothy 2:9 provides a more fitting approach. Women are encouraged to dress modestly, appropriately, and discreetly—as not to draw attention to themselves and lose the respect of others. In other words, even if you got it… cover it up.

The Proverbs 31 woman serves as a great example of godliness. Proverbs 31:22 informs us that she wore the finest linens. Verse 25 reminds us that her outfits represented “strength and dignity”. And because her peace and confidence were rooted in God, she stood strong and secure—pain free while wearing a pair of 6-inch heels, lol!

When we are consumed with our physical features, it causes us to over-evaluate our looks. We labor to “look” the part while failing to “be” the part. We all know someone, who at first glance, “looked” nice. But once they opened their mouth to speak, we realized just how ugly their heart was, proving what lies within the heart cannot be verified with the eye.

True beauty should not be based on body size or type. Rather, the position of your heart and your desire to embody godliness. The world has created its perfect picture of what is “beautiful”, but God assures us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalms 139:14). Is it okay to have cosmetic procedures and enhancements? Absolutely! The problem arises when we allow someone to convince us that we must change our God given features in order to “be” beautiful. Not so! We do not have to “alter” ourselves or behave a certain way to gain worldly affirmation. God’s approval is the only one that matters. Besides, as the world’s perception of beauty continues to change, so will our face.

So go ahead! Wear your prettiest outfit, get your makeup “beat” and strut yo’ stuff. But make sure that all who see you recognize you as a woman who fears and reverences the Lord. A woman adorned with praises is next in line to receive everything she deserves!

For this reason, God rejects physical attributes. 1 Samuel 16:7 confirms that, “the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” His focus is on our heart, not our hair. He is not watching to make sure our lips are perfectly lined or if our lashes are properly glued. He’s watching how we treat others (Matthew 7:12), verifying that we represent Him with a spirit of excellence (1 Peter 2:9).

“Charm and grace are deceptive, and [superficial] beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord [reverently worshiping, obeying, serving, and trusting Him with awe-filled respect], she shall be praised.”

— Proverbs

Women at War

In a world where we often feel helpless to change anything for the better, Jan Greenwood’s book reminds us that “what you do matters, what you think has value and what you say is powerful.”

“Women at War: Declaring a Cease Fire on Toxic Female Relationships” addresses the struggles women face in so many relationships within their gender. We can all name daughters, mothers, sisters, daughters-in-law and sisters-in-law whose connections are severed at worst and contentious at best. Many of us are those women. Greenwood explores healthy relationships and allowing Jesus to heal us so we can build strong and nourishing links that allow women to thrive and share.

Much of Greenwood’s material comes from her experience with Stage IV breast cancer. Her female relationships strengthened her through the ordeal and provided places to share her struggles, fears and pain.

She also draws from the examples of Biblical women. Old Testament women like Sarah and her handmaid Hagar starkly illustrate how women can find themselves in almost unbearable situations where they feel unloved and undervalued and those lacks turn them against each other.

Leah and Rachel, wives of the patriarch Jacob, also show how culture and family expectations can create conflict. Jacob loved Rachel and worked seven years for her father, Laban, to win her hand. But Laban substituted his older daughter Leah at the wedding and forced Jacob to work seven more years for Rachel. Greenwood calls Leah and Rachel the first “sister wives.”

Greenwood also points to Jesus as the example of how women deserve to be treated in the kingdom of God. “He was especially revolutionary,” she writes, “in His approach to women. He valued them, and He demonstrated a different way of responding to them. He has women on the road with him. Women paid for his ministry… and the first person he told He had risen from the dead was a woman.”

‘Questions for Reflection’ at the end of each chapter make the book a practical choice for women who want to discover how to build or heal their own female relationships. While acknowledging how often our society devalues women through the media and especially reality television, Greenwood brings encouragement and inspiration to women who choose to work toward a different reputation of respect and strength for women.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jan Greenwood has held positions in the marketplace, owned her own business, been a fundraising consultant for several Christian ministries, and even run a nonprofit educational organization—all while raising four children. While battling breast cancer, she learned how to contend for your future and live beyond your circumstances. This experience inspired her to found More Ministries, and Brave Strong Girl, an on-line mentoring community where women help one another overcome what makes them feel weak and afraid. For the past decade, she has served on the pastoral team at Gateway Church, a multi-campus church in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. Today, she serves as a equipping pastor identifying and discipling the next generation of leaders.

39 TARRANT COUNTY RESTAURANTS TO PARTICIPATE

28TH ANNUAL DFW RESTAURANT WEEK AUGUST 1 TO SEPTEMBER 1

Thirty-nine (39) of Tarrant County’s finest restaurants are participating in the 2024 DFW Restaurant Week, which kicks off with Preview Weekend on August 1-4, followed by the “Main Week” on August 5-11, with optional extension lasting until September 1. This year marks the 28th anniversary of DFW Restaurant Week, which is North Texas’ largest annual culinary event and the second longestrunning restaurant week in the U.S. (behind New York City). The participating restaurants will offer three-course prix fixe dinners for $49 or $59, with some offering two-course lunch or brunch menus for $29. For each meal purchased at a Tarrant-area participating restaurant, 20 percent will be donated back to Fort Worth-based nonprofit Lena Pope—which provides evidence-based and research-tested counseling, education, and behavior intervention programs to local children and families. Lena Pope has been the Tarrant County beneficiary of DFW Restaurant Week since 1998, with more than $3 million raised from the proceeds of Tarrant County participating restaurants over the past 26 years. Last year alone, DFW Restaurant Week raised a total of $545,128, with $184,925 benefitting Lena Pope. “The support Lena Pope receives during DFW Restaurant Week, from our community and from the amazing restaurants, is a vital part of our ability to provide accessible and affordable programs,” shared Ashley Elgin, PhD, CEO of Lena Pope. “Make your reservations to dine out this August at any of the 39 participating Tarrant Area restaurants and relish the unique opportunity to help children and families thrive while enjoying a delicious meal.”

BLACK COWBOYS

AN AMERICAN STORY

Southlake’s Bob Jones is now part of “Black Cowboys: An American Story,” an exhibition at Witte Museum in San Antonio that transports visitors through time to meet Black cowboys and gain a greater appreciation of their deep impact on American history. The exhibition runs through February 9, 2025, in the Robert J. and Helen C. Kleberg South Texas Heritage Center - Witte Museum, (3801 Broadway, San Antonio). Witte is an affiliate of the Smithsonian. After the Civil War, to make money for land and cattle, Bob Jones joined cattle drives from Texas to railheads in Kansas. Almeady Jones, his wife, grew up on the Denton County ranch of cattle baron John Chisum. The Joneses established a prosperous ranch along the TarrantDenton county line in now-Southlake. “After learning about Bob and Almeady Jones—their community leadership, the growth of their ranch and important role they played educating Black students— we knew that the history needed to be brought to a wider audience,” said Ronald W. Davis II, Curator of American History at the Witte Museum. “The Witte created ‘Black Cowboys: An American Story’ to honor the lives and legacies of Black cowboys and cowgirls across Texas; the Jones family, rightly, is part of that story.” The exhibit shares accounts of Black cowboys who exercised courage in the face of discrimination, skill to overcome great odds, and success through generations of ranching and becoming leaders in their field.

KISS FRONTMEN BRING NEW RESTAURANT TO GRAPEVINE ROCK & BREWS SERVING AMERICAN CLASSICS WITH A SPIN SINCE 2010

KISS frontmen Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons are bringing their third Rock & Brews Restaurant to Texas—the new Grapevine location opened July 2, 2024. Rock & Brews offers a 360-degree rock ‘n’ roll dining experience with iconic rock art (including the restaurant’s signature Texas-sized Great Wall of Rock), colorful concert lighting, and music videos displayed on 75” TV screens throughout the restaurant. The restaurant will also feature live music on the weekends from some of DFW's best local musicians. With both indoor and outdoor seating, Rock & Brews provides an energetic familyfriendly experience, with plenty of space for groups of all sizes.

During the summer of love in 1967, Dave Furano, a well-known Rock 'n' Roll concert tour promoter (Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead), accepted a management position for the emerging San Francisco rock emporium named Winterland. Four years into his position, Dave invited his brother Dell to join him and learn the business. Shortly after his arrival, the Rolling Stones were set to appear at Winterland, and Dell saw an opportunity to merchandise around the concert. He took a collection of psychedelic t-shirts and stenciled "Rolling Stones" on them. After selling hundreds of t-shirts, Dave and Dell formed Winterland Productions, and merchandising in the Rock 'n' Roll business was born. A few years later, while on tour with John Denver, Dave met Peter Morton of Hard Rock Café. They agreed that if Dave could provide guitars and rock memorabilia to display in his venues, Peter would buy some t-shirts. Ultimately, “some” turned into “millions” and Dave joked that he someday wanted to own a Rock 'n' Roll restaurant where he could also sell t-shirts. The first Rock & Brews near LAX Airport in Southern California in 2010. Since then, they have quickly expanded the growing franchise to include over 20 locations in California, Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, and Wisconsin, with more coming soon.

Menu boasts fresh, locally sourced ingredients with a unique spin on American food classics. Full bar features memorable and unique “Rocktails,” one of the area’s most extensive varieties of international and local craft beers, and an impressive selection of bourbons and other spirits. The 9,000 sq-foot Grapevine Rock & Brews is located at 520 W. State Hwy. 114. Here are some fun facts... the restaurant features a memorial to respect, support and tip our caps to the American Forces that protect our freedom. In addition, they offer a discount to all Veterans, Active Duty Military, and First Responders year-round. The furnishings of this restaurant once made up the fabric of America—the dining room bar top is crafted from the floor of the Chrysler Automotive Plant in Ohio, where WWII-era Jeeps were manufactured. The beams of the front merchandise cabinet are from an Amish farm in Pennsylvania and the cladding from a Kentucky Thoroughbred Barn. Most tables are reclaimed and stamped with their history from all over America. If you’re seeking flavor and quality, look no further than Rock & Brews. Classic comfort foods and unique craft beers with a rock 'n' roll vibe.

HAIR LOSS SUPPORT - RENATA HAIR CO.

OWNER - LAUREN JACKSON

Renata Salons owner Lauren Jackson knows the pain and devastation of hair loss in a very real way. In 2018, she was diagnosed with several auto immune disorders, one being alopecia areata where the immune system begins attacking hair follicles causing extreme hair loss and balding. This loss inspired her to create an atmosphere of compassion for those facing hair loss challenges.

Inside of Renata Salons is a top-tier hair salon, gentlemen’s barber shop and fullservice tresse (wig) salon specializing in custom human hair—with a comfortable space with private rooms for sensitive services and an open styling area for that full salon experience. “Clients can expect complete privacy in the exclusive top floor suite dedicated to our hair loss clients,” Lauren promises. “We’re not just here to sell wigs and hair pieces. We offer personalization, maintenance, and refresh to every piece. Our goal? To provide a wide range of hair loss support, helping everyone, at any stage of hair loss. We offer a variety of hair loss options for everyone at every stage of hair loss—from full and half tresses, to James Bond for men. Our commitment to the highest quality human hair pieces allows every piece to be customized and perfected. “We give people the hair of their dreams!”

“The most gratifying part of my job is being able to help people see their value and self worth — knowing that I’m able to positively impact their lives.”

2ND FLOOR BARBERSHOP

At 2nd Floor Barbershop, they provide a wide range of grooming services for men of all ages. Their experienced barbers are skilled in classic and modern techniques to create the perfect haircut, shave, or beard trim that suits your unique style. Whether you need a quick trim or style overhaul, their expertise makes it happen.

TURNING PAIN INTO PURPOSE

“My greatest accomplishment is being able to turn my hair loss into a way to help others,” admits Renata Salons owner/Hair Loss Specialist Lauren Jackson. She specializes in creating custom hair pieces for people who are going through all types of hair loss/thinning hair due to alopecia, chemotherapy, male baldness, illness, hormones, etc. Whatever the cause—all of the hair loss services offered are so transformative. Their main goal is always to create the most natural looking and true-to-self hair for all people.

LAUREN’S PERSONAL TESTIMONIAL

Dear Hair Loss WARRIOR, I write this with a heart that knows the pain and devastation of hair loss. I first began my career in hair dressing at the age of 17 and it became my passion the day I walked into cosmetology school in 2000. My mother and I opened Renata Salons in 2003 and it has been a gift building it together. Later in my later 20s, I moved to Los Angeles and was hired as a regional educator for a product line and salon called Bumble and bumble in NYC. The growth I experienced as an educator was amazing. I had the opportunity to work with the most talented hair dressers in the world back stage at Fashion Week every season. The education and experience was the best in the industry. In September 2018, I was diagnosed with several auto immune disorders, one being alopecia areata where the immune system begins attacking the hair follicles causing extreme hair loss and bald patches all over the scalp. The day my hair started falling out was actually not as bad as you might think because at first you think its just a one time thing and that this one bald spot is as bad as it will get—but my hair loss continued. My hair was pouring out of the follicles in what seemed like a never-ending speed. I grieved my hair as if it were a death of a loved one. Yes, I realize how vain and insensitive this may sound but it is 100% the feeling of losing what at times seems like your identity… and then one day I decided I was going to find the best hair on the market and, like every hair stylist wishes they could do, cut and color my own faux hair. I wasn’t going to compromise and wear ugly wigs that looked like wigs, I wanted to know all of the options.

After feeling like my alopecia was a curse I began seeing it as a huge blessing in my life. Helping people through their hair loss journey is something that has changed my life forever. Seeing the faces of people who finally “see” themself again and walk out with confidence—those smiling faces have impacted my life so much that it’s all I want to do! I know the feeling, my friend Cheryl did the same thing for me and it turned my frown upside down. She gave me a topper that helped me see myself again. Now I know that beauty shines so much deeper than hair, but finally having the hair of your dreams feels pretty dang good! Our goal is to not just transform hair, but the hearts of the people sitting in our chairs. I hope that you all have a good hair day… and remember to let your smile shine so bright.

EBECCA COX

Rebecca Cox has been truly blessed to gain a wealth of experience throughout her 23-year career, focusing on helping individuals in the community who are most in need. Her career has centered on addressing issues like poverty, homelessness, and limited resources. Rebecca has served as a prominent figure in homeless housing and services coordination—for both Tarrant and Dallas counties for over six years as an ambassador for each county’s coordinated homeless response systems. In addition to her work in homelessness, Rebecca has led various initiatives to enhance community services— including improving community clinics and mental healthcare facilities for underserved populations and mapping services for at-risk youth to improve quality/access, particularly for those exiting the foster care system. She holds a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management Administration and a master’s in Social Work

from The University of Texas at Arlington. One of Rebecca’s greatest accomplishments was coordinating with City of Dallas, Metro Dallas Homeless Coalition (now Housing Forward), and multiple organizations to form and lead an outreach taskforce. It worked to identify, assess, and deliver services to the homeless living under the I-75 underpass. After six months, the effort resulted in over 80 individuals obtaining resources to exit homelessness and many more connected to shelters, rehabilitation centers, or other programs. Looking ahead, Rebecca is excited to see how God will guide her in 2024 and beyond. She aims to grow GRACE by ensuring our community can compassionately meets its needs. On a personal note, she truly enjoys guiding her two kids through their high school and college years. She looks forward to hiking when Texas summer heat subsides, but settles now for binging shows with her family.

“This is actually a non-profit my mom and I started many years ago after my brother passed away following many years of drug addiction. It was started too soon, and we both had a lot of personal things going on at that time. So, unfortunately, it fell to the wayside. However, we are reinstating it this month and have prepared a lot better for its success. The goal is to work with local judges to implement ‘Victim Impact Panels’ instead of jail for first time drug offenders, causing Hope vs. Discouragement— ultimately ending the cycle.”

WORDS TO LIVE BY

PRIL DREYSON

April Dreyson is most proud of taking a leap of faith and diving into entrepreneurship with her wife and business partner in December 2023. This venture has provided her with freedom and the ability to focus on herself, her family, and the things that matter most. After 16 years in ‘Corporate America,’ April chose to end her corporate career as a VP of a tech consulting firm. During her tenure, she won 7 Producer of Excellence Awards and 8 Leader’s Trips. She decided to leave the corporate world when she could no longer maintain authenticity and believe in what she was selling. Passionate entrepreneurs at heart, April and her spouse Shaina founded The Dreyson Mobile Bar & Events. Their business is more than just a name—it represents a fresh start and their adventures together. The name ‘Dreyson’ actually combines both of their maiden names into one unifying expression that represents

their union and their business partnership. The Dreysons are committed to always providing exceptional service to every client—ensuring their needs are central to everything they do. They also aim to build loyalty with their venue partners by respecting their rules and treating their venues as if they were their own—as they envision owning a venue of their own someday. Their goal is to create memorable experiences for clients that are worth reliving time and time again. Future goals for the Dreysons include expanding their brand by growing their social club, The Dreyson Society, building a small brick-and-mortar location in Old Town Keller, and eventually opening their dream venue for events, as well as being a unique ways to give back to causes they support. The Dreysons both come from very difficult backgrounds, but have always used that as motivation to do better and encourage others to dream big!

SHER WORDS TO LIVE BY

HAINA DREYSON

Shaina Dreyson is immensely proud of her own entrepreneurial journey. In June 2023, the elements of confidence, opportunity and motivation aligned perfectly for her to realize her dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. With the unwavering support of her wife, she poured her heart and soul into launching ‘The Dreyson Mobile Bar & Events.’ She handled everything from creating the logo to building the website and establishing the business by attending numerous networking events to build personable relationships. Her past experiences had paved the way to this new venture. Shaina graduated from Oklahoma State University with a General Business degree and a double minor in Marketing and Management. She began her career in the corporate world immediately after college graduation—then gained nine years of sales knowledge and valuable experience. Shaina’s

business-marketing-management trifecta has proven to be the perfect mix for her future success. With eyes on future growth of their Dreyson brand, Shaina aims to build a unique, one-of-a-kind event venue that would be called ‘The Dreyson’ (of course!) The name ‘Dreyson’ holds special significance, as it was created by combining the first four letters of Shaina’s maiden name ‘Dreyer’—and the last three letters of her wife’s maiden name, ‘Robison.’ This name fondly symbolizes the beginning of their life together and their shared business journey. The duo hopes their business venture will become a lasting legacy for their family. Once their business ventures are self-sustaining, Shaina’s dream is to travel the world and live on the beach or an island, but for now she enjoys playing board games, video games, watching movies and TV shows with her family and their two beloved dogs.

ARNA HERESZ M

Mrs. Marna Heresz is a self-made woman who has overcome many losses and hardships to get to where she is today—all by the grace of God. She firmly believes that God gave her the strength to take care of all her family members, her company and her employees—even when she thought she couldn’t handle it all! In 2008, after four failed adoption attempts, Marna’s prayers were answered. That year, she founded Open House Network (OHN)—ironically the same year as the real estate crisis. OHN is a unique staffing agency that offers a “Host in Your Place” service, providing coverage for clients who need a day off, a vacation, or time away from their real estate responsibilities. Alongside starting OHN, Marna became a caretaker for her husband—a disabled Army Veteran returning from Iraq. She also took on the care of her elderly parents, a newborn baby (now a teenager), a dog, and a gerbil. Just six

months after launching OHN, Marna and her family were blessed with a beautiful baby girl through adoption. She saw this as a clear sign of God’s plan coming together. What began with just one Model Home Host quickly grew. Marna’s commitment to treating everyone like family, praying for them, and showing appreciation helped OHN expand from one host to five, then to 10, and beyond. Over the past 16 years, OHN has hired and trained over 2,000 Model Home Hosts. Despite being a small team of just five women, OHN has made a big impact. OHN’s growth is not due to fancy marketing, but to hiring amazing people and serving clients with love. Marna believes there is no better way to build a business than with the Lord’s guidance and a support staff that exceeds expectations. Marna attributes her success to God, and the love and support from her family—both inside and outside the office.

TERRI MESSING

For the past 30 years, Mrs. Terri Messing has worked in the arts. Her career has included roles as a Registered Music Therapist, Creative Arts Manager, music educator and oboist. She has developed/implemented arts programs for children, seniors, at-risk adolescents, and rehab or hospital patients. For the past 15 years, she has focused on enhancing the arts in Northeast Tarrant—starting with Art in the Square and the Southlake Arts Council, and more recently as co-founder and chairman of Apex Arts League. She holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music. She and her husband Mark have two children who are professional musicians. She performs with the Northeast Orchestra and the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving and has begun to dabble in painting. Terri and Mark love art and traveling more than anything else. Terri was a founding member of Art in the Square (AITS) in 2000, and 16 years ago, the

original founders of AITS started Apex Arts League to extend the weekend art event to a year-round cycle of arts programming. Terri is the long-time chairman of Apex. Though the two organizations are run differently, they share a common goal—to bring quality arts experiences to the community. Apex collaborates with professional arts groups in the metroplex, presenting at least three visual arts, three film, and three chamber music programs annually, along with professional theater productions. Apex also supports local charities by providing complimentary tickets. Terri is very proud that AITS will celebrate its 25th show in April 2025, that it was ranked #1 in the country in 2019 and 2020, and is consistently in the top 5. The event raises important funds for charities supporting women and children in Northeast Tarrant. Terri hopes both organizations continue to thrive and contribute to cultural life of our community.

NATALIE RENDA-LORANT

Natalie Renda-Lorant, maître d’ at Calabrese Italian Restaurant in Southlake, is a passionate entrepreneur with a dream to create a unique dining experience. Her journey began with an internship with the Colombo family in Dallas, where she was involved in the openings of Villa O, The Club and Trece. This sparked a budding interest in the restaurant industry and led her to study Luxury Goods and Services in Monaco Among all of her accomplishments, Natalie says her greatest professional accomplishment is the founding of Calabrese Italian Restaurant. Before getting into hospitality, she graduated from UT Austin with a Biology degree, then studied at Parker Chiropractic College and worked for a while in her father’s business. Her vision was to establish a one-of-a-kind dining experience—a real departure from her family’s construction background. Despite challenges, her determination and persistence resulted in

the successful launch of Calabrese in 2012, with her father Oscar as a partner and Chef Luciano Salvadore leading the kitchen. Natalie and her Calabrese team are dedicated to celebrating Italian traditions and bringing people together. This family-owned establishment prides itself on creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere for every guest. Natalie finds true joy in getting to know diners, seeing them connect, and enjoy themselves. Her future goals include expanding Calabrese to multiple locations—with a Dallas location in the works. She encourages aspiring women entrepreneurs to pursue dreams with perseverance. “The only person who really needs to believe in you is yourself," she admits. “If you have a dream, don’t give up, there is always a way!” When not at Calabrese, Natalie enjoys walking through the homes built by her husband, Michael Lorant, appreciating the beauty and craftsmanship of their work.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God... we are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us—it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

SHERRI WHITT

Sherri Whitt considers her greatest accomplishment to be her role as president of the Southlake Women’s Club and a founding member of Art in the Square. This national award-winning community event celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2025. Serving on the planning committee since 2000, she has been instrumental in raising over $3.5 million for Northeast Tarrant County charities that support families, women, and children in need. Sherri has been blessed with a 55-year marriage to Grant, two exceptional children, Robin and Christopher, and four fantastic grandchildren—Beau, Jojo, Livia and Nolan. Sherri’s time spent teaching was incredibly rewarding—with treasured memories of her students, like a non-reader smiling as they realize they are reading for the first time. Her teaching experience spans elementary school grades K-3, where she cherishes the

immense joy and fulfillment that she found in her time there. Her children starting school marked the beginning of Sherri's journey as a volunteer. She began as a homeroom mother, serving on PTA/PTSO boards, then planning carnivals, and organizing the kid’s class parties. This led Sherri to explore new volunteer opportunities—each new project offering valuable learning experiences. She finds volunteering to be the best therapy, knowing she might have made a difference in someone’s life. She cherishes bonding with fellow volunteers and forming lasting friendships. Sherri supports various charities and remains actively involved in her local community. She says that being a volunteer is truly a priceless adventure! When she’s not out in the community serving the greater good, Sherri enjoys watching a happy movie, complete with popcorn and a classic Coke.

greater good

It all begins with their signature beauty makeover, companionship, and conversation....

The GlamourGals beauty makeover is a collective experience for seniors in care — organized by GG local teen volunteer chapters. They are a community of young people who care about another generation.

GLAMOUR gals

By empowering intergenerational connections, GlamourGals teen volunteers are lifting the burden of social isolation experienced by senior residents in care nationwide — one makeover at a time.

greater good

GLAMOURGALS (GG) STARTED WITH A MAKEOVER AND TWO VOLUNTEERS AT A SENIOR HOME IN LONG ISLAND, NY AIMED AT REDUCING ELDER ISOLATION. NOW IT IS AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED NONPROFIT THAT WORKS TO FOSTER INTERGENERATIONAL CONNECTIONS AND MEANINGFUL SERVICE FOR YOUNG LEADERS. GLAMOURGALS TEEN VOLUNTEERS ARE LIFTING THE BURDEN OF SOCIAL ISOLATION EXPERIENCED BY SENIOR RESIDENTS IN CARE NATIONWIDE.

GLAMOUR gals

GlamourGals has been applauded by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Oprah Winfrey, Kelly Clarkson, and hundreds of media outlets. GlamourGals is a nonprofit organization that’s built on the power of human connection. Each local chapter is led by an all volunteer leadership team that engages directly with senior centers, recruits new members, and schedules GlamourGals activities in their local community.

GlamourGals has 24 years of service by providing intergenerational impact to seniors across our nation. In response to their service, the seniors in care feel a renewed sense of community and selfworth. In turn, the teen volunteers gain essential leadership skills demonstrating empathy and compassion through GG programming. Since 2000, the programs offered by GlamourGals have impacted two generations. Over half of seniors living in residential care are not visited. You have the power to change that!

Each GlamourGals chapter will provide companionship, conversation, and GG’s signature program of beauty makeovers to the senior residents they serve.

FOUNDER’S HISTORY

Rachel Doyle founded the GlamourGals Foundation in 2000 as a junior in high school in honor of her grandmother who had recently passed away. She was unable to regularly visit her grandmother who lived in a senior home across the country, and she realized there were women in the senior

homes in her local community who also were not receiving regular visits from their families. As a teen who cared deeply about others, Rachel was often frustrated seeing the news only covering misbehaviors. Instead she wanted to create a way to promote and encourage positive actions amongst her peers.

She started getting other teens involved by doing what many already loved to do— experimenting with makeup and spending time with friends. What started as a one-off

event has evolved into a nationwide movement for over two decades, with Rachel evolving and innovating ways to empower beautiful connections across generations. Rachel continues to advocate for both teens and seniors in care and as CEO, has led GlamourGals to become a powerful movement, overseeing 1,300 volunteers across 100 communities in 18 states... and growing!

SERVICE & LEADERSHIP

Through GlamourGals, teens are able to connect with local senior residents, as well as earn service hours. All GlamourGals chapters are student-led service clubs based in high schools and colleges, which partner with a senior home in their local community.

GG National provides the leadership tools and structure to reach isolated seniors and provide community service in a meaningful way. Local chapters bring their creativity, ideas, and entrepreneurial skills to increase engagement and expand programming.

As of press time, the GG website shows four Texas chapters located at: Houston Academy For International Studies, Marion High School, Rock Hill High School, and Texas Christian University. To start your chapter, fill out the form on their website and then look out for an email from GG National with your next steps to follow (glamourgals.com).

TEEN EMPOWERMENT

Driven by the desire to highlight teens making a positive impact in the world, Rachel has integrated both rewards and recognition into annual GG programming throughout the year—from their Power

Brunch and GG Leadership Training to the Glammy Awards celebration where teens strut a GG Hot Pink Carpet, gather with their peers and be recognized for their acts of service. When teen volunteers enter quiet activity rooms, they are able to transform the seniors with stories and laughter. The GG Leadership program allows them to share, reflect and track their service. From training new volunteers to working with seniors and staff, the GlamourGals teen leaders are connecting with new people and building up confidence to lead.

MY DEAR FRIEND

In March 2020, GG temporarily paused their signature in-person program serving teens and seniors. At the same time, demand for their service skyrocketed. Within days they pivoted and mobilized their teen volunteers and greater community to reach isolated seniors in care. They created My Dear Friend.

You are invited to write kind messages, beginning with, you guessed it, “My Dear Friend,” and help mail them to seniors in care. Since they started 150,000 cards have reached isolated seniors in 50 states. The beauty of My Dear Friend is that anyone, anywhere can write. Throughout the year, they provide resources and inspiration. They discovered that when writing together, we build a stronger community.

They created card writing kits that provide everything you need to write and make a meaningful local impact. Each kit contains the materials to reach 50 seniors in your state and help spread awareness about the GG mission to end elder isolation. The funding supports the teen volunteer chapters who provide in-person visits to seniors in care across the country!

Card writing kits are $250 and contain a service event in a box that you can activate anytime! The card writing kit includes:

• 50 exclusively designed cards printed on card stock by water-color artist Laura Babcock

• GlamourGals pens, stickers and hair ties to help spread the word

• Pre-addressed & pre-paid mailer to a senior home in your state

.........................................................................

• Printed instructions and digital assets

.........................................................................

• Ready to ship.

Please allow 5-7 business days.

WEAR YOUR SUPPORT

Ending elder isolation can start with a click of a button. By ordering from the GG shop page, you can support them in their mission. Choose from cards, sweatshirts and tees, pens, backpacks, and books. Shop the store at: glamourgals.org/shop

#GGMOVEMENT

We are the #GGmovement. Together we can build a more connected community, but GlamourGals needs your support. Whether you are able to support their mission by donating, wearing swag, starting a chapter, or volunteering—you are helping others to understand the humanity and the beauty in others. Over half of seniors in residential care are not visited and you have the power to change that by providing companionship, conversation and beauty makeovers. Join the #GGMovement and help put an end to elder isolation—you can make a difference.

Q: WHAT IS THE CLEANEST SWIMMING HOLE IN TEXAS?

It’s difficult to definitively say which swimming hole in Texas is the cleanest since cleanliness can depend on factors like natural filtration, recent rainfall, and visitor activity. Ultimately, the best way to determine the cleanliness of a swimming hole is to check with park authorities or recent visitor reviews before you go. Here are some of the contenders known for their clear water:

......................................................................................................

• Balmorhea State Park: This spring-fed swimming pool is the world’s largest and boasts crystal-clear water that stays around.

......................................................................................................

• Krause Springs: Fed by natural springs, Krause Springs features multiple spring-fed pools with varying degrees of clarity.

• Blue Hole Regional Park: The Blue Hole itself is known for its distinct blue hue and cool, crystal-clear water.

......................................................................................................

• San Marcos River: The constant flow of water from hundreds of springs helps keep the San Marcos River clear and clean.

• Devil’s Waterhole: While not always the most accessible, Devil’s Waterhole boasts refreshing and clear water.

Q: IS IT SAFE TO SWIM IN TEXAS LAKES AND RIVERS?

While Texas lakes and rivers offer a tempting escape from the heat, be aware of potential risks like bacteria, toxins, currents, and wildlife before jumping in. Check water quality reports, swim in designated areas with lifeguards, avoid stagnant water, and wear water shoes. Always go with a buddy, and be mindful of wildlife. Kayaking or sticking to the shore are safer ways to enjoy these waterways.

Q: WHAT SHOULD BRING TO THE SWIMMING HOLE?

Some locations may have restrictions on what you can bring, so always check the park website or call ahead for any specific guidelines. Here’s a checklist of some essentials I suggest to bring along with you when swimming at Texas swimming holes:

• Swimsuit and towel: Obvious must-haves for taking a dip and drying off.

• Sunscreen and sunglasses: Texas sun is intense, so protect your skin and eyes.

......................................................................................................

• Water shoes:

These provide traction on potentially slippery rocks and protect your feet from uneven terrain or hidden hazards.

• Quick-dry clothes and hat: Comfortable clothes for changing and a hat for shade are handy.

• Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated, especially on hot days.

• Picnic lunch and snacks: Many swimming holes are in natural settings, so pack food and drinks if there are no concession stands nearby.

• Cash and/or credit card: For park entrance fees, food vendors, or kayak/tube rentals.

• First-aid kit: Minor scrapes or blisters are possible, so be prepared.

......................................................................................................

• Restroom essentials: Since some swimming holes might have limited facilities, pack toilet paper or hand sanitizer if needed.

• Optional extras: Depending on the location, you might consider a pool float/noodles, goggles, or a waterproof phone case.

With options ranging from historic pools like Deep Eddy to hidden gems like Campbell’s Hole Beach, this list only scratches the surface of the incredible swimming holes Texas has to offer. So, whether you’re seeking a family-friendly day by the river or a secluded spot for a refreshing dip, there’s a Texas swimming hole waiting to be your own personal oasis. Remember to check for any park fees or permit requirements before you go, and most importantly, have fun and stay safe as you explore the cool, refreshing waters of Texas!

NOW THRU SEPT 16 • Art and War in the Renaissance • Kimbell Art Museum hosts the exhibit: Art and War in the Renaissance: The Battle of Pavia Tapestrie. It marks the first time that this entire cycle of seven large-scale tapestries—some of the most awe-inspiring examples of often-overlooked art form—has been on view in the United States. The tremendous images, each about 27 feet wide by 14 feet high, commemorate Emperor Charles V’s decisive victory over French King Francis I that ended the 16th century Italian Wars. Designed by court artist Bernard van Orley, the tapestries were woven in Brussels by Willem and Jan Dermoyen in deeply saturated hues and exquisite detail, luxuriously highlighted with gold. Each composition is packed with figures including richly adorned military leaders, horsemen, and mercenary foot soldiers armed with swords, pikes, and firearms, all inhabiting beautifully undulating landscapes dotted with hills, towns, and forests. The immersive scale draws viewers into the world of Renaissance history, military technology, and fashion and will be complemented by impressive examples of arms and armor from the period. The Kimbell Art Museum is located at 3333 Camp Bowie Boulevard in Fort Worth 76107. For details, please visit: kimbellart.org/art-and-war-renaissance

The Gamma Psi chapter of KAO holds an annual 5K run in memory of Tracy Clark, a member of the class of 1993. Tracy’s idea for a 5K led to the first Breakaway event in 1997. Tragically, she passed away in an automobile accident at a young age, and the event was renamed in her honor in 1999. Since then, the TCU Theta chapter has been organizing the 5K to raise funds for two beneficiaries: CASA of Tarrant County and the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation. All proceeds from the race are donated to these organizations. To register for this event or for more event information, please visit CASA of Tarrant County at: speakupforachild.org/theta

SUNDOWN STAMPEDE

PRESENTED

BY

MEALS ON WHEELS OF TARRANT COUNTY

It’s time to dust off your boots for an evening of good eatin’ and rollickin’ fun at the Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County - Sundown Stampede! Get ready to saddle up for a night of music, dancing, cowboy hats, heartwarming stories, live and silent auctions, and much more. Plus, Drake Milligan is back for an encore concert performance. A local success story with deep ties to Fort Worth and Mansfield, Drake Mulligan is a student of classic Country music with the swagger of early Rock ‘n’ Roll. You’ll love his unique twist on traditional Country music with hits like his popular single, Sounds Like Something I’d Do. After delivering electrifying performances and winning over fans and judges like the legendary Simon Cowell, Drake Mulligan was named “One of the Best Country Albums of 2022” by Billboard. His latest EP release, titled Jukebox Songs, features four all-new tracks and was released on Friday, February 16, 2024. At the Sundown Stampede, you’ll have a blast and be part of a crucial mission to help raise funds to provide lifesaving meals to the homebound, elderly, disabled, and food-insecure neighbors. Your participation will make a significant difference by providing meals, needed services, and a caring smile, showing your compassion and understanding for this important cause. The funds from this event will directly contribute to their mission of enabling people to live with dignity and independence by offering community support through nutritious meals and coordinated services that improve well-being.

Started in 1973, Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County, is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that began by collaborating with 11 faith-based organizations in downtown Fort Worth to bring food to the elderly. Over the years, they’ve grown and now serve all of Tarrant County—providing about 1.3 million meals yearly to some of Tarrant County’s frailest citizens. This journey from humble beginnings to a benchmark program is an immense source of pride for the county and its citizens. Due to illness or the blessing of many birthdays, most clients can no longer remain at home without assistance. Without help, many clients would be forced into nursing homes or other care facilities. Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County’s goal is to keep its clients in their homes—where they want to be—for as long as possible. This is made possible by over 4,400 caring volunteers who freely give their time and personal resources to ensure clients receive a nutritious meal. Volunteers do more than provide a meal and a friendly home visit. Their daily safety checks give many clients and their families added peace-of-mind—knowing they’re safe in their homes and surrounded by a lifetime of memories. Despite tremendous growth, the Meals On Wheels commitment to helping the homebound, elderly, and disabled residents remain in their homes will never change!

and vegetables are in season.

Check out these recipes featuring some prime July produce like zucchini, corn, tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, blueberries, peaches, plums, and melons.

cantaloupe

years. I’ll never tire of the prosciutto-cantaloupemozzarella combination. I really could eat these every day all summer long. And maybe I will! I made these for my recent summer picnic and could not stop eating them. This is what food should be: simple and delicious. Please only make them when you can find juicy, ripe cantaloupe in the summer. It wouldn’t be the same without seriously good cantaloupe! If I was serving these indoors at a party, I would have drizzled them with balsamic vinegar. However, that just sounded like a mess for a picnic so I kept them clean.

INGREDIENTS

Prosciutto slices

Mini mozzarella balls

Cantaloupe

......................................................................................

(1) Use a melon baller to scoop cantaloupe into balls. Cut prosciutto slices in half lengthwise.

......................................................................................

(2) On a skewer, lace prosciutto slices, mini mozzarella balls, and cantaloupe balls.

(3) Drizzle with balsamic vinegar if desired.

peach

Mascarpone Crostini

There’s just something about juicy peaches in the summer that turns me into the heart eye emoji. I also happen to love fruit crostini. You can toast the baguette slices in the oven, but it adds so much to grill them! This would be delicious with fresh mint or thyme, but I adore the savoriness that basil adds to this dish. I used half a baguette, one peach, 4 large basil leaves, and about 2-3 ounces of mascarpone cheese. Can’t find mascarpone? This same concept would be delicious with burrata, ricotta, or cream cheese. You can make the balsamic reduction yourself by simmering balsamic vinegar until it’s reduced by half, but I keep a bottle in my pantry at all times for crostini emergencies.

INGREDIENTS

Baguette

Mascarpone

Peaches, chopped

Fresh basil, torn Balsamic reduction

......................................................................................

(1) Slice baguette into medallions and drizzle both sides with olive oil. Grill or toast to your liking, then slather with mascarpone.

(2) Top with juicy peaches and fresh basil. Finish with a drizzle of balsamic reduction (store bought or homemade) and serve immediately.

......................................................................................

zucchini

If you grow zucchini, this is the perfect use for your summer harvest. I will definitely be making these all summer long! There are lots of versions of zucchini boats on the internet. Mine has seasoned ground beef, tomatoes, ricotta and cheese. You should have enough filling to stuff 6 decent sized zucchini halves. What I love about this dish is that it’s your protein and veggie all in one. All you need is rice or Grilled Mexican Street Corn Salad on opposite page and you’re dinner is good to go!

INGREDIENTS

3 zucchini

1 pound ground beef

1/2 cup diced onion

1 tsp salt, pepper to taste

1 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp dried basil

14.5 oz can of fire roasted tomatoes

1/2 cup + 1 spoonful ricotta

1/2 cup Monterey Jack or mozzarella cheese, shredded

(1) Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Slice ends off of zucchini and cut in half lengthwise. Drizzle with olive oil. Roast for 10-15 minutes at 400. Lower the temperature to 350 after you remove the zucchini.

(2) Make the filling: brown beef with onion in a large skillet over a medium flame. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and dried basil. When beef is nicely browned, add tomatoes to deglaze the pan. Lower the heat and stir in ricotta until combined.

......................................................................................

(3) Stuff the boats with the filling and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-30 minutes until zucchini is cooked through. Add shredded cheese for the last five minutes. Serve over rice.

SL SummerHarvest

Grilled Mexican Street

corn Salad

A delightful summer salad full of grilled veggies, this salad is a mix of grilled corn, grilled zucchini, and grilled bell peppers tossed with tomatoes, diced red onion, and cilantro with a light cumin lime dressing. It would also be fantastic with avocado and cotija cheese. I grilled my veggies up the day before and made the salad the morning of my party. Save the tomatoes to toss in right before you serve though. Refrigeration just kills the flavor of tomatoes. I will definitely be making this salad all summer long!

INGREDIENTS

5 ears sweet corn, husks removed

3 medium zucchini, ends removed and sliced in half

2 bell peppers, cored and cut in half

1/2 cup diced red onion

4 large tomatoes (or 1 cup cherry tomatoes), cut into pieces

1/2 cup fresh cilantro

Optional: avocado chunks, cotija cheese ...................................................................................................

(1) Rub corn, zucchini, and bell peppers with olive oil. Heat a grill to medium-high heat and grill veggies over direct heat until zucchini and peppers are tender and corn is slightly charred.

(2) Remove from heat, let cool slightly, and cut zucchini and sweet pepper into chunks. Cut corn off of cob and toss with red onions, fresh cilantro, and dressing. Chill salad until ready to serve, then add chopped tomatoes.

VOLSTEAD

PROHIBITION BAR + KITCHEN

The latest restaurant on the Southlake scene transports patrons back to the clandestine days of the Prohibition era. Volstead Prohibition Bar + Kitchen seamlessly blends allure of the Roaring Twenties with modern-day elegance, offering a unique Americana dining and drinking experience. With a menu that boasts classic martinis, inventive signature drinks, and elevated classic comfort dishes such as Fish and Chips and Crispy Deviled Eggs, this bar, (though open just a few weeks) has already become a beloved local hotspot.

Guests are enveloped in an atmosphere reminiscent of a 1920s speakeasy. Low lighting, vintage photos and jazz music playing softly in the background set the stage while bartenders skillfully craft cocktails that harken back to a time of forbidden alcohol and drink-making creativity flourished. Martini menu is a testament to the bar’s commitment to authenticity. Patrons can choose from a range of classic martinis meticulously prepared with top-shelf spirits and fresh ingredients. Whether it’s a dry martini with a twist of lemon, a dirty martini with a hint of olive brine or a Manhattan with an Amarena cherry, every sip evokes the sophistication of the Prohibition era.

In addition to martinis, Volstead takes pride in their signature cocktails, which showcase bartenders’ innovative flair. One standout is the Strawberry Mule, a delightful concoction of strawberry gin, fresh muddled strawberries and lime juice and a splash of ginger beer, a perfect summer cocktail. Another favorite is the Watermelon Skinny (aka giggle juice), a tequila-based cocktail infused with watermelon, agave, fresh lime and a dash of tajin. Signature drinks not only pay homage to the past, but also reflect the bar’s commitment to crafting unique offerings with locals in mind. Weekday happy hour from 2-6pm features half-off martinis, old-

fashioned and wines by the glass, along with some specially priced food items.

Culinary offerings at Volstead are just as impressive as the cocktail list. The menu is all-American with a special focus on seafood. Volstead stands in the former Fish City Grill space and Volstead’s founders were also Fish City Grill’s owners so this is no happy accident. Fish and Chips, are, in fact, Fish City Grill’s recipe and was one of their most demanded dishes up until their final days. Fresh, flaky fish is battered and fried to golden perfection, served with crispy, seasoned curly fries and a tangy tartar sauce. The dish is a harmonious blend of textures and flavors, making it a favorite among OG regulars and newcomers alike. For dessert, the Key Lime Pie is a must-try. This classic American dessert is given a sophisticated makeover, featuring a buttery graham cracker crust, creamy and tangy lime filling, topped with a generous layer of freshly whipped cream. The balance of sweet and tart flavors provides a refreshing end to a sumptuous meal. If you’re like me and dessert only counts if it has chocolate, then the 13 Layer Chocolate Mousse Cake is not to be missed. Pair it with freshly brewed coffee or Espresso Express Martini for ultimate indulgence.

Ambiance with expertly crafted drinks and mouthwatering dishes, creates an experience that is somehow nostalgic, yet fresh. It’s a place where friends gather to unwind, couples can enjoy romantic evenings and solo visitors find a cozy spot to relax or catch up on work emails. Whether you’re in the mood for a perfectly shaken martini, a creative signature cocktail, or a good ol’ cheeseburger with truffle fries, this bar offers us a taste of history with a modern twist. Step inside, take a seat and let the magic of Volstead transport you to the 1920s as you enjoy this truly unforgettable dining destination
