SEVENTEEN

There’s something very cool about turning 17—think K-Pop band and teen magazine covers. Seventeen is on the brink of being considered an adult, almost but not quite on your own. There are symbols that represent the 17th anniversary. The color is yellow. And carnelian is the gemstone associated with the 17th anniversary. It symbolizes warmth, joy and endurance. The 17th anniversary modern gift is furniture or the traditional gift is a watch. If you can find a watch made with carnelian—an orange-red stone—you can cover several bases with one gift. On the modern side is furniture, which symbolizes stability. I get the watch because you’ve stood the test of time, but I pondered this one, why furniture? After 17 years, I guess we figure you’ve been around long enough you are a permanent fixture—like practically becoming part of the furniture.

Happy Anniversary Society Life Magazine! With this issue it’s now been 17 years, 204 issues, almost 20,000 pages, and millions of words. I have been here with you for all of them. You have been an important part of my life and the community for the last 17 years and going strong. Much like the symbolism above, you have stood the test of time—even making it through a pandemic—and you have become a permanent fixture for readers every month. You’ve shared many stories of warmth, joy, endurance and stability within your pages. Much like all of the communities you cover, you have grown over time with them. I am proud of how far we have come since that first issue in May of 2006. We’ve covered a lot about life in 17 years.

In this issue, we are talking about looking and feeling great at any age. The articles really do show that age is just a number. It simply signifies how long a person has lived on earth. This series of numbers can not define what you’ve achieved, who you are or what you will still be able to accomplish. Whether old or young, we can achieve almost anything at any age as long as we feel good enough to do it. And that’s the real truth of it—age is just a number if you feel well enough to not care about it. With good health comes the feeling of a more youthful you.

Check out our cover story featuring age management experts Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center (starting on page 26). Then flip the pages for some secrets for aging gracefully (page 30), how to care for our eyes as we get older (page 36), and finally powerful anti-aging foods to help us live longer, healthier lives (page 40). It’s all about healthy vibrant aging. As Abraham Lincoln said, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s life in your years.”

STRENGTHEN

ECCLESIASTES 12 IS AS TRUE TODAY AS IT WAS WHEN KING SOLOMON WROTE IT ABOUT 3,000 YEARS AGO. He told young people, “Keep your Creator in mind while you are young! In years to come, you will be burdened down with troubles and say, ‘I don’t enjoy life anymore’” (verse 1, Contemporary English Version). Of course, older people also need to remember their Creator, but they may have more time to focus on this important aspect of life. During the Golden Years priorities change, as most couples are no longer burdened by the responsibilities they had as younger people with demanding careers and young families. Now the children are raised, and there may be grandchildren to enjoy. And there is little threat of being fired from a job when one has already retired. There are some definite positives for this new stage of life!

GROWING OLD GRACEFULLY

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

Do you find yourself glancing at obituaries to see how many friends and acquaintances may be listed? The accumulation of years does have an inexorable effect on our bodies. The older body doesn’t “bounce back” from an injury, illness or even a simple strain as it once did, so we may struggle with health challenges. In Ecclesiastes 12 Solomon went on to say, “Your body will grow feeble, your teeth will decay, and your eyesight fail” (verse 3, CEV). Some things do become more challenging with arthritis, loss of mobility, diminished eyesight and even a need for false teeth. “The noisy grinding of grain will be shut out by your deaf ears, but even the song of a bird will keep you awake” (verse 4, CEV). Hearing problems don’t guarantee sound sleep! “You will be afraid to climb up a hill or walk down a road. Your hair will turn as white as almond blossoms. You will feel lifeless and drag along like an old grasshopper. We each go to our eternal home, and the streets are filled with those who mourn” (verse 5, CEV). The human body was never designed to live forever, and we all will advance through these stages as we proceed toward the end of our lives. Along with all the other changes, even our

hair changes—if it doesn’t turn white, it turns loose! All of these factors and more mean that, in order to age with grace and dignity, we will need to have realistic expectations of ourselves. We will need to gradually curtail heavy physical activities and will have to be more careful driving after dark—or perhaps give up driving altogether. While our expectations must change, this does not mean we cannot live satisfying and beneficial lives!

AGING HEROES OF FAITH

The Bible contains many stories of righteous people who continued serving God even in old age. The patriarch Isaac, as he came toward the end of his life, was inspired by God to do something powerful and deeply meaningful. In the tradition of the time, he wanted to pronounce a blessing on his eldest son (Genesis 27:1-2,Genesis 27:21-22). The blessing of children like this was intended to be encouraging for the family, and it also carried with it a legal implication regarding control of property and possessions. Although Isaac was blind and deceived by his younger son, God caused this particular blessing to confer prophetic blessings on the descendants of these men that would impact the world all the way down to our time today!

10 APRIL 2023 | SocietyLifeMag.com
Some talk of old age as the “Golden Years,” but those living in them often don’t find much gold. However, there is treasure — if you know where to look!

Many years later Jacob found himself nearing the end of his days on earth. He and his entire family moved to Egypt during a terrible famine; and upon meeting Pharaoh, he was asked, “How old are you?” Jacob answered that he was 130 years old (Genesis 47:7-9). Since it was not uncommon for people at that time to live 130 years or much more, one has to wonder if Jacob looked older and wearier than his years would indicate. He also passed on prophetic blessings to his children— and to his grandchildren, Ephraim and Manasseh.

King David, a good king who was strong in his faith, reigned over Israel and Judah until the age of 70. As the years went by, David, who had always been a smart, valiant and powerful warrior, came to the point where he could no longer cope with the rigors of battle (2 Samuel 21:15-17). So he handed over those duties to others and concentrated his efforts on ruling the kingdom with righteousness and grace.

At the time of the birth of Jesus Christ, Anna the prophetess was active at the temple (Luke 2:3638). Various Bible commentators calculate her age as anywhere from 84 to 103 years old. At such an age, today we would expect her to be exempted from work. But she was still serving as best she could. With aging affecting our once youthful bodies and minds, how can we grow old gracefully? Scripture is encouraging in declaring, “They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing” (Psalm 92:14).

THERE IS GOLD TO BE FOUND IN OLD AGE

It is important to keep a positive, even humorous, perspective on aging, because God designed our bodies to age. It’s not the act of a vengeful God, but of a loving God. And God wants us to continue to bear fruit. One of the biggest benefits of living many years is one that so many in our culture today overlook or dismiss. It’s the wisdom that comes from so much experience in life! As the old adage says, we need to learn from the mistakes of others, because we can’t possibly live long enough to make them all ourselves! With age comes wisdom and understanding to pass along to children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren—if only they will have the wisdom to stop and listen.

Also with those years of experience comes a new level of learning—or at least it should! Another old adage says that wisdom comes with age—but sometimes age comes all by itself. But age does not necessarily eclipse our ability to continue learning. The Bible is an inexhaustible mine of wisdom, and the more we study and understand, the deeper our understanding can go. We can

also add deeper knowledge and insights on marriage and family, interpersonal relationships, business, hobbies, planning and the importance of love. There is a lot of valuable gold from experience that comes with the silver in the hair!

GRACEFULLY ACCEPT THE POSITIVES

Age should also bring a level of maturity and mellowing gained by experience. There can be a digestion of life and an acceptance of loss and grief. The aged have absorbed life’s blows and wounds. Some heal. Some scar. But all carry lessons to be learned and passed along. The hard edges of a personality can soften, hot tempers can cool, rashness can become tempered with patience, and the foolishness of youth can be replaced by the wisdom of years. Some older men seek leadership roles, while for many others what they’ve accomplished in their careers is enough. Some realize they may have neglected their wife and family through the years, so they work now to repair and rebuild those precious relationships with love and graciousness.

When a woman’s children are grown and move on to homes and families of their own, she may have a renewed opportunity to reassess and modify her life. She may be able to focus anew on the positives of her husband. She may become comfortable enough with herself to no longer feel the need to fit in with every

fashion. She becomes more settled in what she likes and dislikes. And, of course, grandparenting experiences bring pleasure, hopefully without the strains parenting can carry.

AND TIMES ARE CHANGING …

Those living the “Golden Years” today did not grow up in a computer age with our smartphones, tablets, megabytes, Google or DVDs. Learning to navigate these technological marvels can be challenging and quite frustrating! Failing eyesight can make it difficult to focus on computer monitors and screens. Diminished hearing can make it a struggle to even hear instructions clearly. But older folks need not be afraid to give new technologies a try, and shouldn’t give up easily.

Upon retirement some seniors have learned their way around a computer and have discovered a vast new world of information, ideas and entertainment online. Some have even gone so far as to earn money on the side researching genealogies or digitally enhancing old photos from the comfort of their own home. The satisfaction that comes from learning something new and useful is perhaps worth even more than the money such efforts might bring in.

NEARER GOD’S KINGDOM

A poster in a senior center boldly declared, “Growing old isn’t for sissies!” As

the years go by, we will all identify with that statement more and more. But the Creator who designed our bodies to be affected by the passage of time does not leave us to suffer alone. Through the prophet Isaiah, He says, “Listen to Me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been upheld by Me from birth, who have been carried from the womb; even to your old age, I am He, and even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you” (Isaiah 46:3-4).

Growing old gracefully has its challenges. With age comes the realization of how physically close we might now be to the Kingdom of God. In a very real sense we stand on the brink of eternity. But we should also understand that the final heartbeat is not an end—but a grand beginning. “But as it is written: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). The God who made us also planned a wonderful future beyond the certainty of growing old and ending our days on earth. We can look forward to that time with anticipation, while learning how to navigate the later years with grace and dignity. With faith in this wonderful truth about the meaning of life, we can find there really is gold to be found in the Golden Years!

TORMENT DESCENSION

This month’s book is for graphic novel readers. This genre has grown exponentially in recent years—especially in both the anime and young adult categories. This reviewer considers “Torment: Descension” by Daniel Foster a graphic novel for adults due to the serious subject matter and a certain level of violence.

The main character David and his wife Grace welcome their first baby with joy. Grace has given up a profitable law practice to raise their child. But in just a few weeks, little Matthew begins to run fever and refuse food. A cadre of specialists diagnose an unnamed autoimmune disease. The prognosis is grim. Matthew only has weeks left to live.

We witness David’s agonizing grief and helplessness. A stranger in the hospital cafeteria tries to comfort and encourage him. Strangely, no one else can see the stranger. During one of David’s late night grieving sessions beside Matthew’s crib, the stranger reappears. He shows David the future and then reveals his true identity:

Satan, Prince of Darkness. Satan then offers David an actual “deal with the devil” that will heal Matthew and hold his family together. But the price is incredibly high.

The rest of the story plays out as David tries to fulfill Satan’s requests while staying true to his moral nature. During the process he discovers an almost magical power within himself that even Satan did not suspect. But the Evil One is more than happy to exploit this power.

The pages of the story are dialogueheavy, but the tension between David’s agonizing desire to save his family and his high moral nature kept me reading to see how he would overcome his dilemma. David’s such an unusual soul that Satan wonders at one point exactly what to do with him.

Be aware that “Torment: Descension” is the first installment in a trilogy. The ending of this particular book is a true cliffhanger and you’ll have to wait for the next two books to discover the resolution of David’s story.

TASTE PROJECT RECORD WEEK RECORD MEALS FOR THIS SPRING

Taste Project, the nonprofit that operates Taste Community Restaurant, announced it served a record 1,010 people last week, a record 33% higher than an average week in 2022. This new record highlights the growing need in our community for access to healthy, nutritious food. Record inflation driving increased food prices at the grocery store, and the recent elimination of SNAP allocations issued during the pandemic, are impacting working families in our community. Many of these vulnerable families already live paycheck to paycheck because of the lack of affordable housing in Tarrant County and rising healthcare costs. Jeff Williams, founder and executive director of Taste Project has always had a burden for feeding people. Jeff grew up in a family of four, and both his parents worked hard to put food on the table. He remembers times when food was scarce, and his parents would skip meals to make sure he and his sister were full. He knows first-hand the stress his parents encountered to put food on the table. Taste is a pay-what-you-can restaurant where everyone in the community, regardless of financial means, can enjoy a fresh and healthy, high-quality meal. Menu has no prices. Guests pay what you can afford; pay what you would typically pay; or pay what you would typically pay, plus a little extra to help a neighbor in need. It is a give and take concept designed to provide meals for those in need based on the generosity of other guests. More than half of Taste Project’s diners receive a free or subsidized meal at Taste Community Restaurant which is offset by diners who can afford a little extra to help their neighbors in need. –

The project ties into the nonprofit’s 2023 theme, ‘Serve and Succeed.’ The Youth Service Project encourages young people of all ages and grade levels to develop, organize and execute a community service project to improve the lives of veterans or others in their community. By participating in, and successfully completing the Serve and Succeed project of their choice, students receive a community service award and commemorative bracelet. Each participant is entered into a drawing for the chance to visit National Wreaths Across America Museum, Gold Star History and Hospitality House and the tip land monuments where replica dog tags from thousands of service men and women are hung in remembrance. Throughout the year, the WAA Teach program provides educational opportunities for people nationwide to engage with veterans in their communities. In 2022, WAA launched a K-12 curriculum that is aligned with the National Council on Social Studies and state Common Core standards. The free, downloadable lesson plans ensure stories of service, sacrifice and valor are passed down while building good character and self-worth through service to others. “Teaching the value of freedom and the importance of honoring those who sacrificed is a core part of our mission, but we want young people to know you do not have to be in the military to serve,” said Cindy Tatum, Curriculum Developer. “No act of service is too small, and we look forward to all of the impactful projects students will submit.”

Age management consists of a wide range of approaches designed to roll back the aging process and give you the tools to look and feel years younger. You might notice these signs of aging showing up as deepening facial lines, thinning hair, a loss of energy, decreased sex drive, or slowly worsening chronic pain in your joints. Dr. James Kadi, board certified plastic surgeon and the medical director of BHRC Dallas, and its founder and spa director Heather Tindell, work together to deliver safe and effective services with the highest level of care possible. Heather came directly from the flagship location in Beverly Hills, California to launch BHRC Dallas in 2013 and she continues to bring their breakthrough protocols to the DFW Metroplex — the very same services enjoyed by the Hollywood elite (who — by the way — never seem to age so we can all now enjoy their very own Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center secret to the stars right here at home).

The center’s award-winning, nationally recognized bio-identical hormone replacement therapy helps correct your hormone levels, so you can live an extraordinary quality of life no matter your age. Using a combination of natural, plant-based hormones, which are scientifically matched at a molecular level to suit your specific body type, BHRC’s service provides the benefits of hormone replacement therapy without the side effects. These advanced treatments are what can now help you start to defy your age, look younger, and feel healthier for a lifetime.

17 Secrets TO AGING Gracefully

In a day and age where 50 seems to be the new 30, there are endless methods and tricks for turning back the clock. Some habits like your daily beauty routine may feel effortless, while sticking to any exercise regimen can take a bit more discipline. While it is impossible to avoid the aging process altogether, there are things you can do in your own life to make the experience more enjoyable. However you choose to take on the inevitable aging process, remember that age is just a number, and graceful aging begins when you can embrace the journey and not merely endure it.

Graceful aging is best defined through acceptance of your age, not defiance. “By taking good care of yourself and respecting your mind, body and spirit, age becomes less important,” Tammy Stokes, author of “Live Your Healthiest Life” admits. “But what really matters is how you feel throughout the process.”

IN MY 30s

My number one tip for looking great and feeling great is to enlist the experts — they are out there and they would love to help. take the stress off of yourself and trust those that have done the training and do the continuing education. In example, for all of my hair care needs, I go to Brandy at HeadCase in Keller. I have never demanded that Brandy cut or color my hair any certain way. Instead, I tell her what I am trying to achieve, whether it be slimming my face or trying a trend, and like effortlessly casting a spell, Brandy makes it happen. I’m glad she didn't let me highlight my hair orange like Avril Lavigne (a moment of temporary insanity I tried to have last year) because who knows how brassy I would be today. She doesn't just look at your hair style for the moment, but for the long haul. What will your hair look like if you get too busy and don’t make it in for color for 11 months? (Raising hand. It's me.) For skincare, I only trust my face to Dr. Polit at Beautopia. While going to a doctor, as opposed to an injector, seemed more costly on paper, it actually ended up being more cost efficient for me. Dr. Polit only uses the highest quality injectables and skincare products, so now I only have to go in every nine months as opposed to every three. It’s not only saved me time, but money. And my skin’s never looked better!

There is definitely an art to dignified aging — and most of us are already familiar with the ways in which we can incorporate healthy lifestyle habits like plenty of rest and water, healthy diet, regular exercise. But, what about the deeper meaning of aging gracefully? This list provides some inspiration on how to truly appreciate the process. Here’s 17

(1) Be practical.

Secrets to Aging Gracefully:

“You’re not going to look 20 at age 50. Acceptance is at the core of aging well,” notes Alyson Hoag, founder of Authentic Beauty. Setting realistic goals is a top priority, otherwise you will lack the confidence that embodies graceful aging. “Stay focused on the here and now— not what you looked like 20 years ago,” she says. “It’s all about being true to the person you are today.

(2) Live in the moment.

What if you had a wonderful life and you never knew it? Worrying about the future or wishing circumstances were different only causes unnecessary stress and anxiety. Remain grateful for this day—it’s the only one you have.

SL

(3) Celebrate you.

“If you want to enjoy a better quality of life and age with grace, then celebrate the person you are,” Stokes says. All too often, we participate in negative self-talk that results in a feeling of inadequacy. Focus on forgiving, accepting, loving yourself. Be kind to the “little child” within.

(4) Whiten your teeth.

A beautiful smile is worth a thousand words. “Smile from the inside out,” Hoag advises. Enhance your grin with teeth whitening—people are drawn to those who smile a lot. And, a gorgeous grin just gets better with age!

(5) Work with children.

If you want to stay young, play young. Whether you volunteer your time at a pediatric hospital or lead a Sunday School class at church, children have the ability to teach adults what truly matters. “Seeing the world through a child’s eyes helps us find the goodness in life,” Hoag says. “It also allows us to tap into the enthusiasm we had as children.”

(6) Keep it real.

Nothing is sexier than authenticity. Live a life that resonates with your inner being. When you discover your authentic self, material things lose their value and people see the real you. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “While we may not be able to control all that happens to us, we can control what happens inside us.” Let your inner beauty shine through.

(7) Laugh often.

Learn to let go and really laugh—it keeps your soul young. “Stay lighthearted and maintain a healthy sense of humor. Nothing is more unattractive than grumpy old men and women,” Stokes says. The health benefits of laughter include lower blood pressure, stress relief, memory improvement and oxygenation of the blood. Smile and laugh often—your body and soul will love you for it.

(8) Update your hairstyle.

We’ve all seen it: old lady hair. Whether your thinning, straggly hair hasn’t seen shears in 20 years, or you’ve maintained an outdated short do for too long, it’s time to get current. First, flip through a magazine or browse the Internet to find a hairstyle you like (age-appropriate, of course). Then, take the picture to your hairstylist and talk it over with him or her. Be open to suggestions regarding cut and color.

IN MY 30s

I’m sure readers won’t be surprised to know that I cook at home most days and eat mostly chicken, seafood, and tons of veggies. I also grow a lot of my own food — which is equal parts fun and delicious! I have tons of healthy recipes on therosetable.com and even a Garden Recipes section full of delicious dishes made with vegetables I grow. As for exercise, I walk my dog every day and I love doing yoga in the garden, swimming laps in the summer, and working out in my home gym. I love to bake so thank goodness I also like to run! I’m also an equestrian and have owned horses for my entire adult life. Horseback riding, driving, and even just grooming a horse is great exercise and you have the added mental health benefit of spending time outdoors. I feel more relaxed as soon as I get to the barn. Horses really are the best personal trainers!

IN MY 40s

I have always wanted to keep my skin looking healthy enough that I didn’t need a bunch of makeup to cover it up to feel good in my skin. I rarely wear makeup because I work from home, but even when I do I’m a minimalist. Three biggest tips to keeping your skin healthy at any age is sunscreen, sleep and hydration. I’m no good without 7-8 hours every night of sleep and I’ve been wearing sunscreen since my teens. This is the main reason I think most people think I’m in my 30s even though I’m pushing 50. I follow the K.I.S.S. Rule for my routine (Keep It Simple, Stupid). I have Eczema so these products work wonders for my sensitive, dry skin. I wash with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. Then in the day, I wear Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46 Sunscreen. I like the tinted one to even out my complexion. At night, I apply some Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion to hydrate. I also drink a lot of water (and some wine). And I love to cook my family’s favorite foods in the healthiest way possible. Always active, I keep up with my three kids and three dogs — the only time I’m sitting is at my computer.

IN MY 50s:

By the time you enter your 50s you care less and less about spending time and money on trends/fashion, and more about spending quality time with friends and family. You pause before you commit to something, considering how much time and effort it will cost. As I enter into the midpoint of my 50s, these are things that help me manage looking and feeling my best:

Quality skincare. If you haven't already, it's long overdue to purchase a quality skincare regimen. No scrimping here, get something of high quality, but not too overwhelming with steps, so you’ll actually use it. Never skip a morning and evening skincare routine. Even when you're sick, stick to your routine and it may even make you feel better.

Water. Drink lots of water. If you are bored with the taste of water, infuse it with fresh fruits or other herbs. If you're thirsty, you're already behind in the number of ounces you need for the day. There are tons of apps to help you track it if needed.

Friends. Treat yourself to a weekend away with friends once or twice a year. There are few things that are better for your soul than this!

Sleep. Get more sleep. I chose to not have a TV in the bedroom as a young adult. I continued this approach after I married. It has served me well. You’ll do more for your body and your skin by getting more sleep than all the spa treatments money can buy.

Supplements. Educate yourself on supplements and at what ages you may need to increase certain items. I was unaware of the need to increase calcium and I'm paying for it now. Be ahead of the curve on this one!

Exercise. Get moving. I don't exercise a lot, but I never miss a walk. I have a large dog and we get out there year round, no matter the weather. Experiencing the seasons, even the harsh ones, is good therapy. It’s a nice time to talk to God, talk to the neighbors or catch up on a phone call. It does more for your soul than you can measure.

Volunteer. It can be through a formal organization or offering to bring dinner to a friend who had surgery. Give of your time without expecting anything in return. It does wonders to refresh and renew your spirit.

(9) Get creative.

In her book called “Aging Artfully,” author Amy Gorman challenges conventional perceptions of old age by documenting the lives of 12 women ages 85 to 105, who are actively engaged in the visual and performing arts. Through these profiles, Gorman reveals the gratifying and youthful nature of creative expression. It’s true: exercising the right brain well into the golden and bonus years keeps life fun, fresh and full of excitement.

(10) Enjoy meditation.

Finding your Zen or calm place to just be is revitalizing for anyone. So, enjoy some quiet time alone in the morning to journal, or read and slowly sip your coffee. Meditation helps you to relax physically and mentally, putting aside the day’s worries and just delighting in the moment. What’s more, it actually keeps you spiritually centered and connected throughout the day.

(11) Keep love alive.

“Love helps you stay young,” Stokes says. “If you are married, then behave as if you are dating your spouse. If you are single, get out and mingle. Learn to give and receive love fully.” When we give ourselves completely to another person, we become vulnerable—an essential component of intimacy.

(12) Get creative.

Dress it up. People certainly take notice when they see an older man or woman who is stylish. On the other hand, they never fail to notice someone who is dressed too young for his or her age. Don’t be the latter. “Dress appropriately for your age,” Stokes says. “And choose what looks best on your body type, even if it’s not always the latest fashion trend.”

(13) Find your passion.

Oftentimes, busy lives keep us from pursuing our passions. If you have something on your bucket list, make time for it. “Find ways to play and laugh every day. I believe aging gracefully comes from your state of mind—when you act young, it shows on your face,” Hoag says. Travel, take piano lessons or sign up for a triathlon. Whatever you do, enjoy all that life has to offer.

(14) Be healthy.

While diet has everything to do with good health, there is more to a healthy lifestyle than food. Other ways to maintain your overall wellbeing include staying fit, caring for your skin and eating super foods.

17 Secrets TO AGING Gracefully

“Do not rely on aesthetics to make you beautiful. Good health is natural beauty guaranteed,” Stokes admits.

(15) Build intimacy.

We desire meaningful relationships based on honesty, respect, love, trust, appreciation and togetherness. While we have a primal need for sex, we yearn for a deeper connection with those we love. We need intimacy. Work on improving your relationships, from your significant other, to your friends and your family, to your Higher Power. Cultivate togetherness through conversations, kind gestures and romance.

(16) Pamper your skin.

———————————————————––

Beautiful skin makes a world of difference in your appearance— think Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Wear sunscreen religiously, drink plenty of water (divide your weight by two—that’s about how many ounces of H2O you should consume daily) and enjoy regular facials, microdermabrasion and peels (consult your dermatologist first). Here’s another tip: Avoid washing your face in the shower or at the sink with hot water, as heat is drying and aging. Instead, try to use cool water from the tap or, even better, spring water from a bottle.

(17) Stay grateful.

When we are mindful of the blessings in our lives, we invite more of the same. In the book, “Codependent No More” by Melody Beattie, she says: “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

Graceful aging

is

IN MY 60s

I’ve been told that I don’t look my age. At 66, I hope that means I look more like 50 rather than 70. When asked about my antiaging regime, I typically get a cringed ‘ooh’ instead of affirmative ‘ahs.’ That’s because I’m a skinimalist (Skin + Minimalism). I keep it basic and pared-back. I wash my face with Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleaner, hydrate with Eurcerin Advanced Repair Cream, and put on a tinted foundation with Broad Spectrum SPF 15. I’ve intermittingly used fancy face and eye repair creams, but I’ve never seen that much difference. Are you ready for me to drop my biggest beauty bomb? Don’t cringe. I have used exfoliating gloves on my face once a week for over 30 years. It seems to act like micro-needling. For me, it improves the appearance and texture of my skin. This inexpensive treatment minimizes my wrinkles and smooths texture. I use soft and light circular motions on those areas that tend to wrinkle first — forehead, upper lip area, outer eyes, neck, and décolletage. Call me crazy, but my $2.99 exfoliating gloves do the trick!

IN MY 70s

the outside as we

on the inside. While aging gracefully will mean something different to each and every person, it’s entirely up to you to determine what makes you feel good. Whether it be embracing your naturally gray hair or keeping an annual appointment with your dermatologist for a cosmetic pick-me-up, it’s about the journey — not the destination. Now go make the years to come your own.

I’ve had seven-and-a-half decades to figure out what works for me. Eating healthy is, and always has been, a top priority. I have had a supplement routine for a long time that includes Ester-E, Ester-C, CoQ10, and other vitamins including Balance of Nature so I get everything my body needs to stay healthy. I also take SeroVital which helps me keep my energy levels up and assists me in getting restful sleep at night. This is important because age-related issues with sleep like waking early and insomnia would hurt my need for a good 8 hours nightly. Serovital has also improved the elasticity of my skin. I’ve made a point to take very good care of my dental health to keep my own teeth for my lifetime, as well as taking care of my eye health. Mobility is a big issue for many peers my age, but I still take care of my home and my garden for both my body’s health and health of my soul!

Aging and YOUR EYES

A few common changes for older adults include:

• Losing the ability to see up close

• Having trouble distinguishing colors, such as blue from black

• Needing more time to adjust to changing levels of light

These problems are often easily corrected. Glasses, contact lenses, and improved lighting may help and enable you to maintain your lifestyle and independence. Your risk for some eye diseases and conditions increases as you grow older, and some eye changes are more serious. Keep your eyes as healthy as possible by getting regular eye exams so any problems can be spotted early.

So, what can you do to protect your vision? Here are some tips to help. Have your eyes checked regularly by an eye care professional—either an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Finding and treating any problems early can help protect your vision and prevent vision loss. Make a list of all your questions and concerns to share with the doctor. Tell them which medications you are taking. Some can affect your eyes. Normal changes in the aging eye usually do not harm

your vision. However, sometimes they can be signs of a more serious problem. For example, your eyes may leak tears. This can happen with light sensitivity, temperature or wind changes. Sunglasses and eye drops may help. Sometimes, leaking tears may be a symptom of dry eye or sign of an infection or blocked tear duct. Your eye care professional can help to treat these problems.

As you age, it is normal to notice changes in your vision.

Many people don’t notice any signs or symptoms in the early stages of eye diseases. A dilated eye exam performed by an eye care professional is the only way to find some common eye diseases while they’re easier to treat—and before they cause vision loss. Everyone over age 50 should have a dilated eye exam every year or as recommended by your eye care professional, even if you have good vision and don’t wear contacts or glasses. After age 60, you should get a dilated eye exam every year or two. Most people with diabetes or high blood pressure need to get a dilated exam at least once a year. During this exam, the eye care professional will put drops in your eyes to widen (dilate) your pupils so that he or she can better see inside each eye. Your vision may be blurry after the exam, and your eyes may be more sensitive to light. This only lasts a few hours. Make plans for someone else to drive you home. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, get your prescription checked, too. Even small changes in sight can increase your risk for falls and injuries. It’s important to use the proper prescription glasses or contact lenses. See your primary health care provider regularly to check for diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. These diseases can cause eye problems if not controlled or treated.

Tips for Healthy Eyes at Any Age

There are some things that you can do to take good care of your eyes and help to keep them healthy as you age. Here are a few:

• Protect your eyes from sunlight by wearing sunglasses that block ultraviolet (UV) radiation and a hat with a wide brim when you are outside

• Stop smoking

• Make smart food choices

• Be physically active and maintain a healthy weight

• Maintain normal blood pressure

• Manage diabetes (if you have it)

• If you spend a lot of time at the computer or focused on one thing, take a break every 20 minutes to look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds to prevent eye strain

Eye Diseases and Conditions

The following eye problems can lead to vision loss and blindness in older adults. They may have few or no early symptoms. Regular eye exams are your best protection. If your eye care professional finds a problem early, there are things you can do to protect your vision.

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) can harm the sharp, central vision needed to see objects clearly and to do common things like driving and reading. Your eye care professional will ask about your family history and look for signs of AMD during a dilated eye exam. Treatments are available, and special dietary supplements can help lower your chance of it getting worse.

..............................................................................................................

Diabetic Retinopathy may occur if you have diabetes. It develops slowly—often with no early warning signs. If you have diabetes, be sure to have a dilated eye exam at least once a year. Keeping your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol under control can prevent diabetic retinopathy or slow progress in early stages. Laser surgery in later stages can sometimes prevent it from getting worse.

..............................................................................................................

Cataracts are cloudy areas in the eye’s lens causing blurred or hazy vision. Some cataracts stay small and don’t change your eyesight much. Others become large and reduce vision. Cataract surgery can restore good vision and is a safe and common treatment. If you

have a cataract, your eye care professional will watch for changes over time to see if you would benefit from surgery.

Glaucoma is usually caused by too much fluid pressure inside the eye. If not treated, it can lead to vision loss and blindness. People with glaucoma often have no early symptoms or pain. You can help protect yourself by having dilated eye exams yearly. Glaucoma can be treated with prescription eye drops, lasers or surgery.

..............................................................................................................

Dry Eye occurs when tear glands don’t work well. You may feel stinging or burning, a sandy feeling as if something is in the eye, or other discomfort. Dry eye is common as people get older, especially for women. Your eye care professional may tell you to use a home humidifier or air purifier, special eye drops (artificial tears), or ointments to treat dry eye. For more severe cases, treatment options might include prescription medication, tear duct plugs, or surgery.

Signs of an Eye Emergency

See an eye care professional right away if you:

• Suddenly cannot see or everything looks blurry

• See many new floaters (tiny specks or “cobwebs” that seem to float across your vision) and/or flashes of light

• Have eye pain

• Experience double vision

• Have redness or swelling of your eye or eyelid

What is Low Vision?

Low vision means you cannot fix your eyesight with glasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery. Low vision affects some people as they age. You may have low vision if you:

• Can’t see well enough to do daily tasks like reading or cooking

• Have difficulty recognizing the faces of your friends or family

• Have trouble reading street signs

• Find that lights don’t seem as bright

If you have any of these problems, ask your eye care professional to test you for low vision. Vision rehabilitation programs and special aids, such as a magnifying device, can help you adapt to vision loss and make the most of your remaining sight. There are also programs, such as the National Library Service, that link people who have low vision or visual disabilities to resources at no cost. Remember to ask your eye doctor if it is safe for you to drive with your vision. If you have to stop driving, organizations in your area may be able to arrange rides to assist you, or public transportation may be available. Other tips that may help:

• Brighten the lighting in your room

• Write with bold, black felt-tip markers

• Use paper with bold lines to help you write in a straight line

• Put colored tape on the edge of any stairs in your home to help you see them and prevent you from falling

• Install dark-colored light switches and electrical outlets so that you can see them easily against light-colored walls

• Use motion lights that turn on when you enter a room as these may help you avoid accidents caused by poor lighting

• Use clocks with large numbers and phones with large screens and put large-print labels on the microwave and stove

Powerful Anti-Aging

In general, the best diet to live longer is based on 3 simple rules:

Rule 1: Fewer carbohydrates | Not only less sugar, but also fewer starches. So, fewer sugary foods, but also reduce intake of bread, potatoes, pasta, and rice. Replace starchy foods more with vegetables, legumes, mushrooms or quinoa.

Rule 2: More healthy fats | This includes fats from walnuts, chia seed, flax seed, fatty fish, dark chocolate, avocado, olives, olive oil, and so on.

Rule 3: Less animal protein | If you eat animal protein, substitute red meat with white meat (chicken and turkey) and fatty fish when possible.

Foods To Live Longer

There are specific foods that are very healthy and can slow down aging. And, there are many ways to increase your intake of these foods.

For example, make a vegetable smoothie with pomegranate, or add blueberries to your breakfast quinoa porridge, or make lots of soups which are a great way to increase your vegetable intake. Instead of snack bars you eat nuts with a piece of dark chocolate, or just a plain old simple apple.

Because you know, an apple a day keeps aging a bit more at bay!

SL FOODS | HEALTH | AGING

Pomegranate

Pomegranate keeps the blood vessels young and flexible. It improves endothelial function (endothelial cells are the cells that line the inner walls of our blood vessels), reduces the stickiness of blood platelets, and lowers oxidation of cholesterol particles, which otherwise become sticky when too oxidized, clinging to the blood vessel walls and contributing to atherosclerosis.

Pomegranate is also very healthy for the skin and could slow down skin aging. Specific components of pomegranate can also be converted by the microbiome in substances that slow down aging, like urolithin A.

Nuts especially walnuts

Many studies show that people who eat a handful of walnuts have considerably less risk of a heart attack.

Nuts also protect the brain against Alzheimer’s disease and improve cognitive functioning, even in young people. Walnuts contain substances that are healthy for our brain and blood vessels, such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and many other phytochemicals.

Nut intake has been associated with less insulin resistance, improved endothelial function, reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and even colon cancer.

Blue fruit: blueberries blackberries

You want to protect your brain against aging? Think blueberries! Blue fruit contains many brainfriendly, neuroprotective substances like anthocyanidins, which have powerful health effects. Blueberries can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and slow down brain aging in general.

Blueberries are associated with a reduced risk of heart attacks and lower blood pressure. A study with more than 120,000 participants showed that a handful of blueberries per day can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Blueberries can protect DNA against damage, even against strong cosmic radiation, as studies have shown.

That’s why NASA even studied blueberry intake to protect the DNA against cosmic radiation for their astronauts in space.

42 APRIL 2023 | SocietyLifeMag.com

Legumes: chickpeas lentils, peas

Legumes can reduce the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes. Legumes are a healthier alternative to potatoes, rice or pasta, which are very starchy foods that can cause high sugar peaks and that are essentially empty calories. In contrast to potatoes, pasta and rice, legumes contain more fiber, less starch, and more healthy micronutrients, like potassium and magnesium.

In fact, every portion of rice that is replaced with legumes reduces the risk of metabolic syndrome by 14%.

Green leafy vegetables: broccoli spinach, kale Brussels sprouts

People who often eat green leafy vegetables have brains that are up to 11 years younger. Also, their blood vessels are much healthier. People who regularly eat leafy greens had about 16% less risk of a heart attack.

If you combine eating leafy greens with other healthy foods, and with exercise, your risk of getting a heart attack goes down even further. Green leafy vegetables are full of important vitamins, minerals, and health-promoting substances like sulforaphane. Longlived people who live in Longevity Zones often eat lots of greeen leafy vegetables.

Mushrooms: oyster enokitake portobello

Mushrooms could reduce the risk of cancer and boost the immune system, through specific mucopolysaccharides, beta-glucan, and lentinan-like molecules.

Mushrooms are excellent alternatives to starchy foods like potatoes, pasta and rice, given these foods cause high super peaks, which is unhealthy and accelerates aging. Mushrooms cause much lower sugar peaks.

Mushrooms can also be great alternatives to meat. Too much meat, especially red meat, increases the risk of various diseases of aging.

SocietyLifeMag.com | APRIL 2023 43

Apples

Apples are a bit of an under-appreciated food, despite being powerful contributors to health. Apples contain various substances that can reduce the risk of asthma (by reducing inflammation), heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. One apple per day could reduce the risk of cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx by 18%, esophagus by 22%, colorectal with 30%, larynx by 41% and breast and ovary cancer by 24%.

One study found women who consumed more than 71 g of apple per day had a 43% reduction in heart disease mortality compared to women who did not eat apple. Health effects of apples can be explained by the many healthy substances they contain like hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols, dihydrochalcones, anthocyanins and flavanols that improve the health of the blood vessels, immune cells, brain cells, and microbiome.

Seeds: pumpkin chia flax

These little nutritious kernels are filled to the brim with vitamins, minerals and healthpromoting substances, such as omega-3 (especially in chia seeds and flax seeds).

They are also full of fiber. Such little health bombs help you to drastically increase your fiber intake, which can also reduce your risk of heart disease and death.

Herbs especially ginger rosemary, oregano garlic

Herbs have antiinflammatory, DNA protective, and even epigenetic effects. They also have a beneficial impact on the gut microbiome.

44 APRIL 2023 | SocietyLifeMag.com

Fatty salmonfish: sardines anchovy

herring

These foods have been linked to less cardiovascular diseases, auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, and healthier brains.

Fatty fish contains omega-3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation and are important components of the cell membranes, especially in the brain, eye and blood vessels.

Consuming omega-3 rich foods protects against Alzheimer’s disease and heart disease and agingrelated eye diseases, like macular degeneration.

Olive oil and olives

Olive oil reduces inflammation. It’s also good for the skin when taken orally.

Olive oil can also reduce the risk of aging-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.

Dark chocolate at least 70% cacao

Dark chocolate has been associated with less risk of heart disease, hypertension and even a reduced risk of death.

Giving pre-diabetic patients dark chocolate lowers blood pressure. Dark chocolate contains flavanols, which have various health effects, like reducing inflammation, keeping your blood vessels flexible and even slowing down the aging process itself. Dark chocolate can even improve skin aging. This makes sense, because the skin and blood vessels are made of many similar building blocks (such as elastin and collagen).

DFW FARMS FOR FLOWER & BERRY PICKING

The fun of flower and berry picking is you get to enjoy an activity plus the fresh fruit and floral arrangements all in one! Rather than going to the grocery store, you get to turn your normal shopping into something fun. The adventure is getting too many berries and then spending the next few days making all the breads, jams, pancakes and more you can imagine! Luckily there are some great places to pick flowers and berries near Dallas-Fort Worth.

Make sure to take note as, depending on the season and year, harvest dates do change. Call ahead or check social media for what is in season and what is available and to make sure they haven’t run out of stock. I try to keep this flower and berry picking list up to date, but each year things do change.

You’ll find sprawling strawberry fields fresh for the picking at this family-owned farm in Arlington. There’s just something so wonderful about a fresh off the vine strawberry. They also don’t use any pesticides. Strawberries are $8 per pound and baskets are complimentary. You just pay for what you pick! You can purchase strawberry products like jam, ice cream, as well as storm salsa and local honey. Keep tabs on their social media and website for updates as they become available. Strawberry season is typically mid-March until end of May.

This U-pick berry farm is just two hours from Dallas and is open April through July. They have five acres of blueberries and over 100,000 strawberries all ready to be picked! The strawberries cost

$3.85 per pound and buckets cost $2. You can also pick from their peach and plum trees, Christmas trees (November – December), and Leyland Cypress trees. They also have a small concession stand selling homemade strawberry ice cream, soda, cold water, electrolyte water snacks, and their popular homemade strawberry lemonade! Check out their gift shop stocked with handmade products like jams, preserves, soaps, bath products, Rowe Casa Organics products, and more. Note: Due to recent hail damage to their strawberries, check their social media daily to see if they will be open for berry picking that day.

Pick your own blueberries and blackberries! Blackberries are $3 per pound, while blueberries are $2.95. The season starts in midMay and ends in late July (or when the crops are bare). Check their website for updates as picking season gets closer. There is also an air-conditioned store where you can buy blueberry, fig, peach, apricot, cherry, and blackberry preserves. At the bakery, you can try their popular blueberry cream pies, blueberry muffins, blueberry ice cream, yogurt, and blueberry lemonade! The store also has a rest area with shade, picnic tables, and restrooms to freshen up!

The strawberries are off the ground, perfect for those with back pain! You can bring your own bucket and scissors or rent them at the farm. They are very popular in Greenville, so the best thing to do is show up early and wait in line as soon as they are open— otherwise, you’ll barely find any strawberries! TxN VISION

Their vision is for every business, every Texan to participate in conservation and for Texas to be a model of collaborative conservation for the world.

TXN

Texan by Nature (TxN), a Texas-led conservation nonprofit founded by former first lady Laura Bush and responsible for bringing together conservation and businesses to positively impact natural resources, prosperity and health across Texas. Texan by Nature exists to advance conservation that is beneficial to people, prosperity, and natural resources. TxN partners deeply with conservation groups and business, acting as an accelerator for conservation groups and a strategic partner for business.

WHO TxN IS

In 2011, former first lady Mrs. Laura Bush founded Texan by Nature to unite conservation and business leaders who believe our state’s prosperity is dependent on the conservation of our natural resources.

WHAT TxN DOES

They bring conservation and business together. They amplify projects and activate new investment in conservation which returns real benefits for people, prosperity, and natural resources. They achieve their goals through their TxN Membership pro-

gram, Conservation Partner Network, Texan by Nature Certification program, Symposia series, Conservation Wrangler program, Texan by Nature 20, and other statewide initiatives like the Texas Water Action Collaborative. with the strongest resources and funding to make the biggest impact for Texans, our economy, and our natural world.

TxN INITIATIVES

They believe in doing the groundwork that successfully transitions dialogue to ideas, ideas to initiatives, and initiatives to measurable impact for natural resources, people, and prosperity.

TxN PROGRAMS

Their approach is clear: Connect. Convene. Catalyze. TxN connects the brightest minds to the strongest resources. They convene business with conservation to forge valuable relationships that catalyze the most exciting conservation projects benefiting natural resources, people, and prosperity. Texan by Nature makes a unique positive impact by:

Connecting: They connect people and projects with the resources they need to make a significant impact. The leadership and extensive partner network allow them to facilitate innovative investments and research in Texan-led conservation. They develop and broker trusted relationships through their Conservation Partner and Membership programs. These programs act as the foundation to convene the appropriate leaders and catalyze conservation efforts that benefit people, prosperity, and natural resources.

Convening: They bring experts, partners, and members together for action. Their Conservation Summit, Symposia Series, and the Statewide Initiatives drive dialogue, new partnerships, and additional opportunities to replicate conservation projects and programs. Their convening programs build on the connections made with Conservation Partners and Members.

WHY TxN DOES IT

As Texans, it’s in our nature to take care of the wildlife, native habitat, and natural resources that help our economy thrive and help define our identity as Texans. In 2011, Texan by Nature’s founders saw there was great conservation work taking place across the state, but a lack of partnerships and data-based approaches. In a big state where more than 94 percent of land is privately owned, teamwork and targeted strategies are critical to conservation’s success.

Texan by Nature has a vision to align the broad interests of conservation groups with the resources of businesses, health care institutions, schools, the scientific community, and faith-based organizations. By building on the Texan mindset and combining our respective strengths, we can collectively create a positive impact for Texas’ economy, people, and land for generations to come.

TxN TAKES ACTION

Their mission is collaborative. With the help of forward-thinking business leaders, innovative conservation experts, and passionate community members, they can deliver a strong, sustainable, and prosperous future.

TxN knows that our quintessential Lone Star Pride is rooted in our connection to our vast, rich landscapes as unique as every Texan. Whether hiking in Big Bend, gazing at the Hill Country wildflowers, enjoying vast grassland prairies, appreciating urban greenspace, or basking in the towering solitude of the Piney Woods, they believe that it’s in our nature as Texans to take care of the land we love. Texas’s wildlife, native habitat, and natural resources breathe life into our communities and our economy.

Visit

resources.

Catalyzing: They mobilize resources to support exciting conservation projects in their most critical stages of development. They communicate the importance and impact of Texan-led, science-based conservation. Building on the incredible platform their founder Mrs. Laura Bush has developed, they tell the partners’ success stories and work to touch the hearts and minds of all Texans—from schoolchildren to business leaders. Through Conservation Wrangler, Texan by Nature 20, and TxN Certification programs, they provide resources, recognition, thought leadership, and build capacity to accelerate innovative and replicable conservation in Texas as a model for the globe.

They invite all who share this commitment to conservation, who want to ensure our natural resources continue benefiting our beloved Texas for future generations, to join them as official members of Texan by Nature! With your help, they can provide broader, bolder support for conservation awareness and action across Texas. Your gift ensures focus on projects that return a measurable benefit to Texans, our economy, and our natural resources—that’s a positive return on conservation. Every single dollar makes a difference.

Momilies

SL

In this issue of Society Life’s Mom’s column, we asked Elena Ellis, the Publisher and Founder of Society Life Magazine, to answer 20 questions about her experiences both in becoming and being a mom. Elena has 14-year-old twin boys, Preston and Taylor, and a 6-year-old daughter, Skylar. She resides in Keller with her 3 children and their 3 boxers. Here’s what she had to say…

I said so

AS MOTHER USED TO SAY

SOCIETY LIFE: What’s one of your earliest memories you have of your Mom? ELENA ELLIS: For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be just like her. She was, and still is, an amazing role model. She made motherhood look effortless. The very earliest thing I think I can remember was right after my brother was born. I was about 2-and-a-half years old and we were sitting on the couch together—me, my mom and my brother. My mom was breastfeeding my newborn brother and I sat right next to her with one of my dolls mimicking her. This might have been the very first time I tried to follow her lead as a mom, but it certainly wasn’t the last. To this day, I rely on her for sound advice when I need motherhood guidance—which seems like all the time!

SL: What is something you thought about Motherhood that was totally wrong? EE: I thought it would be easier because I wanted it so badly! The desire to be a mother just seemed to be in my genetic makeup from birth. Even from very young whenever people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up—my answer was always, “a Mommy.” And it still is. It is the most important job that I have and the one that I work the hardest at, however becoming a mom was a very hard and long journey for me that forced me to question myself repeatedly if it was ever meant to be.

SL: What is something you always wanted to do but didn’t... and why didn’t you? EE: I wanted to travel the world modeling. I gave it a good shot and worked professionally from the time I was 11-yearsold until about 18 when I decided to retire (I laugh) and go to college along with all of my peers the same age. I was scheduled to head to Europe for the first time—Paris then

Germany—but it didn’t feel right. I didn’t want to live out of a suitcase, and I don’t regret it. It was a difficult decision to stay home, but in hindsight it was the right one. I lost my dad to cancer just a year after I got married and not long after graduating from college. If I’d chosen a different path I would have missed all of those years with him. That I would have regreted way more!

SL: Was there something your Mom did when you were a kid that you swore you’d never do as a parent? EE: I have thought a lot about this question for several reasons—for one, she’s proofing these pages so I have to be nice (hi Mom!) and the other is because, as I have already alluded to, she was an amazing mom. But I did come up with one thing. I swore I’d never make my daughter wear those pink foam rollers in her hair overnight. Those suckers were so uncomfortable and I hated them. I used to think, “Why do I have to have curly hair for church on Sunday... God knows my hair is straight... He made it that way.” (sorry Mom!)

SL: What did you think you wanted to be when you grew up? EE: I knew I wanted to be a Mommy, as I mentioned in a prior question, however I thought I wanted to be a doctor for a while. That all changed one hot summer day when my family was out in our backyard. My mom and dad were doing yard work while my brother and I played. My mom was edging around my playhouse that had a roofline that was just about level with her forehead. Unbeknownst to her, when she bumped her head on it, she started bleeding. Now, I came running over to her and see my mom with blood running down her face! In my defense, the sweat and blood had mixed

together to create a terrifying scene from a horror movie. My doctor instincts did not set in. I ran in circles. I’ve never lived it down

SL: How have your notions of what it means to be a Mom changed over your lifetime?

EE: When my twins were born, I was 34-yearsold and married. We had tried for so long to become parents that becoming a mom for the first time was the realization of a dream for me. But bringing them home from the hospital was a rude awakening. It was much harder than I thought and times two! Up to that point my notions of being a mom were all daydreams and the reality did live up to the dream in some ways—and in other ways I was naive. But, when my daughter was born, I was a 42-year-old single mom and a widow. At that time, I’d had eight years of parenting experience—half of those with my husband and the other half as a widow. I was much more confident in my instincts. Plus, I didn’t sweat the small stuff or think everything had to be perfect for me to be a good mom. Giving myself the room to be human and make mistakes has been the biggest change for me.

SL: What’s the best family vacation you’ve ever taken? EE: I have two. The first one was with my late husband and our twins to Hotel del Coronado in California. He booked this trip when I was huge pregnant at 39 weeks with twins and I thought he was crazy! He was born in Long Beach so we went to California a lot, but never before with 5-month-old twin babies. When we walked into first class on the plane with an infant in both of our arms you could cut the tension with a knife... lots of eye rolling. I had everything planned perfectly—bottle on takeoff, slept the whole way, awake at landing. We literally received applause from all of our fellow travelers. And the time spent there was just as perfect. Second one was a Disney Cruise with my mom, my daughter and twins. After losing my dad and my husband just eight years apart, I never take having time off with family for granted. Watching them indulge and have fun always does wonders for my soul.

SL: Is there a moment or event that radically changed the way you saw Motherhood? EE: The moment I became a single mom. It was very sudden and unexpected. My prayers immediately

AS MOTHER USED TO SAY

Momilies

went to asking God for me to be enough—for the loss of their dad in their life to not alter who He meant for my twins to become. They were just a few months shy of 4-years-old. My focus became helping them heal and be spiritually, emotionally and physically healthy after such a life-altering change. We called ourselves, “The 3 Musketeers.” We’ve walked side-by-side through grief and we’ve become stronger. That strength lead me to seek motherhood alone. I knew after going through fertility with my husband that I could do it again on my own. This journey was also long and hard, but when I looked into my newborn daughter’s eyes—this time I knew I was enough.

SL: When did you know you were ready to have kids? EE: Knowing I wanted kids and being ready for them was two different things. I wanted to graduate from college and pursue my career in graphic design and journalism first. Once I met my late husband in college, I knew he was the man I would someday marry. That was the final piece for me to be ready. Little did I know that we’d try for almost 10 years before we sought out reasons why from a fertility doctor. We were blessed that our first IVF was a success.

SL: What is your favorite photo of your family or kids? EE: I love candid photos— hence the ones I chose for the pages of this article. I also love photos of my family at the beach. It’s my happy place and we all look better by the ocean somehow. But my very favorite two photos sit next to my bed—one on each of my nightstands. One is the 1-day old photo with both of my twin boys from the hospital, and the other is my daughter’s 1-day old photo. These photos capture the two days in my life that were forever changed for the better by their births.

SL: What was the first year of motherhood like for you? EE: Let me first say that my first year with my daughter was amazing. It was like all the good feel-good Hallmark TV commercials were everything goes right. But hoo boy, the first year of being a first time mom of multiples was a blur. I have a hard time recalling much about the first 3 months due to sleep deprivation from my non-stop nursing schedule. I truly think tandem nursing with twins is an urban legend because my boys were having none of that sharing thing! I’m

SL

glad my late husband was taking a lot of photos (even though I look so tired and in desperate need of a shower) so I can look at them now and remember. It was a milestone year of so many firsts and after they both started sleeping through the night I was having the time of my life!

SL: What do you want or wish most for your kids? EE: I want so much for them it’s hard to list. I want to guide them to discover their Godgiven talents and follow their passion. I want them to develop a relationship with Christ that isn’t because of mine, but because of theirs. I want them to know true love and realize their dreams. I want them to be ready to take on the world because I did my job well getting them ready for all that life can give and take. And more than anything, I want them to know that I will love them no matter what for every second of my life.

SL: What are some of your biggest struggles as a Mom? EE: Time. There just isn’t enough of it in each day. I volunteer to be cloned or at the very least I need a Rosey Robot like the Jetsons! I have to decide every day how to prioritize my family above all else and still run a successful publishing company—and do laundry, clean house, grocery shop, take care of my 3 boxers, be at every sporting event and pickup/dropoff... and sleep. My late husband was also my business partner so not only did I become a single parent overnight, I also became a sole corporate owner.

SL: What would your perfect day off be like? Describe it. EE: This will be fun! I’d wake up on my own—not by an alarm, child throwing up or dog needing to potty outside. My cup of coffee would be waiting nice and warm followed by a Salty Dog with fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. Then I’d cook a big breakfast for my whole family, but somebody else would clean up! My perfect day would be by the beach—the ocean resets me. King crab legs would have to be eaten at some point and the lazy day would perfectly take its course without me having to plan an itinerary. I’d enjoy a long walk along the water’s edge with all three kids and three dogs hunting for seashells. And miraculously we wouldn’t track any sand into the house afterwards! Oh, and no fighting amongst the kids or dogs. Evening would be out

at a nice restaurant that welcomes fat pants, serves tenderloin and cabernet—and when we get home we’d all curl up on the couch dogs and all, watch a movie that everyone would love, and fall asleep right there

SL: What’s the one song that means the most to you? EE: This is hard because I love music, can often be found at impromptu dance parties with my daughter, and I am constantly cooking to my newest favorite album. I would’ve been the next Taylor Swift if God had given me a voice others would love to hear sing—but “Amazing Grace” speaks to my soul in a way I cannot put into words.

SL: What advice would you give to your younger self about Motherhood? EE: Elena, the road will be hard. You’ll question every decision that you make. Listen hard for that still small voice and obey. Keep praying and believe that miracles happen every day. Know its okay to not know what to always do, but always be true to yourself. Trust that if God put the dream inside of you that He will make it so. Remember that love is enough. Put your faith above your fear and let love lead your way (and one more thing...) They will all eventually be potty trained. Breathe.

SL: Is there a quote, saying, words of advice or scripture you consider words to live by? EE: I need to fill the rest of this page so I will answer all of them. Quote: “She believed she could, so she did,” by author R.S. Grey. I love this quote and have it framed in my home above my daughter’s bookshelf so she will know she can do anything she sets her mind to—it’s a good reminder for me, too. Saying: “A closed mouth catches no flies” and “Pretty is as pretty does.” My grandmother used to tell me both of these and she told them to my mom also. It’s just a good rule of thumb on how to behave and be respectful of others. Words of Advice: When my husband passed away, my mentor told me to, “Just keep showing up.” Those words have been my mantra for the last decade and keep me making

AS MOTHER USED TO SAY

the next right decision. Finally... Scripture: “When I am afraid, I will trust in God” Psalms 56:3. Being a single parent is hard. Making decisions alone is hard. For me, knowing that I don’t have to burden it alone means everything.

SL: If you could share a meal with any woman past, present or future who would it be? Why? EE: I would love to actually meet my identical twin daughters face to face. I lost them both with a double miscarriage. I rest now knowing I will get to meet them someday.

SL: What Mom from real-life or even TV/movies do you admire most? EE: I admire Mary, mother of Jesus. How strong she had to be in a time it wasn’t acceptable to be pregnant without a husband.

SL: At the end of a long day, what do you do for fun or relaxation? EE: Close my office doors—I work from home and this creates boundaries for me. I cook some amazing food and grab a glass of wine. I spend time hanging out with my kids and my dogs and then watch a movie that makes me laugh. I would also love a bubble bath!

FATHERING A CHILD IS DIFFERENT THAN BEING A DAD.

A father is defined as a male parent of a child, one who shares DNA with the child, but may not share responsibility for the child’s growth and development. “Dad” is a term of affection and familiarity, and dads actively participate in their child’s life. To achieve the title of Dad, we must learn to apply the three P’s: Provide, Protect, and be Present.

Provide

Children are the primary recipients of the fruits of a dad’s labor. There are so many expenses for the needs of a child, which include adequate housing, clothing, food, and medical care. Additionally, children have many wants—from buying toys and electronics to playing sports and taking vacations. The act of providing is dependent upon receiving income, which typically occurs outside of the time with children. The more you can strengthen yourself in your career or field, the better position you will be in to provide for your children.

Protect

So many factors today can harm your children. Bullying, human trafficking, and discrimination are just a few risk factors dads need to consider. Some threats are clear, while others may not be immediately apparent. These dangers can be subtle and hard to detect. Paying close attention to the actions and location of your child and fostering an environment for open communication will be your best chance at identifying unknown dangers. You must apply the third P in order to accomplish this goal.

Present

Being present is the most important of the three P’s. There is nothing more important to a child than being physically and emotionally available for them. I once read a quote, “Children don’t just need your presents, they need your presence.” It is important that some of your children’s fondest memories and experiences include you—their dad. If you are not around, you will miss their life’s milestones and achievements. Time passes that you cannot get back. Nothing can substitute being present in your child’s life.

SL 6 Questions About

What's it like to be a member of GCS Moms League?

One mom summed it up perfectly: "A few weeks after welcoming our first son, we learned our little family would be moving from small town USA to the DFW area. One thought kept ringing in the back of my mind — ‘How am I going to make new friends?" Luckily, I found GCSML. While volunteering, I have built so many friendships I don't think I would have made otherwise.

I look forward to the future of GCSML and meeting the new faces who will grow our group in the coming years!”

GCS Moms League - The Great Gala benefiting Steping Stones Foundation

Raising children is an essential job, but also the most demanding! Of course, it's an extraordinary experience, but it can also be isolating at times. With this in mind, the Grapevine Colleyville Southlake Moms League (GCSML) was created in 1994 to connect working moms, stay-at-home moms, and school-aged moms with each other through various events catered to all schedules and age groups. Today, with more than 250 members, they bring together mothers (and fathers) from across North Texas. Monthly events include their breakfast social meetings, the new member mingles, weekly playgroups, children’s events, moms’ night out, couples’ nights out, community service opportunities, book club, game night, and so much more. Whether you are a new mom or just new to the area, you will find the GCS Moms League is a place where you are always welcome.

GCS Moms League also has a rich history of community involvement hosting three public events: Trunk or Treat, Children’s Activities Expo, and their annual Great Gala, which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities. This year, Grapevine Colleyville Southlake Moms League is honored to announce their 2023 Great Gala, held on April 29, 2023, at the Bowden Event Center in Keller. The theme for the event is Met Couture. Guests are encouraged to wear a unique gown or black tie attire to showcase their most eclectic ensemble to recreate the couture costumes seen on the red carpet at the Met Gala in New York. The evening will be filled with fashion, fun, and excitement! There will be cocktails, dinner, dancing, and an amazing fashion show hosted by Melissa Rycroft-Strickland, a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, television personality, host, and dancer seen on The Bachelor and Dancing with the Stars. This prestigious fashion show will feature gowns donated by Rebecca's Runway with hair by Southlake Blondies Salon and makeup by Royale Luxxe Beauty. There will also be a finale of four models dressed in extravagant art-inspired couture gowns by Keller-based fashion designer Bee J Stanley with avant-garde hair and makeup styled by Ashley Nicole Stone and Beauty Entourage. Spicy Violin will provide electric violin music to fit the unique theme. In addition, there will be 30 great raffle items, Live and Silent Auction Vacation Homes, DJ & Dancing, and so much more!

Proceeds from this grand event will benefit the Stepping Stones Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to serving youth in crisis throughout North Texas. Stepping Stones provides access to emergency housing, food, clothing, and medical care and offers an array of programs and services to empower and instill the necessary tools to make positive life choices. With the help of local supporters like you, GCSML hopes to reach their goal to raise $40,000 for Stepping Stones Foundation. In charge of this year's Great Gala, Brooke Baker Kronschnabel states, “GCS Moms League is proud to be able to curate such a unique event benefiting Stepping Stones Foundation. We are passionate about their mission to save homeless and at-risk youth in our area.”

WHY: Their mission is to connect local moms and their families for support, friendship, and fun by providing events, educational opportunities, and dedicated programs to give back to their community. Your support of The Great Gala will also benefit Stepping Stones Foundation and their mission to pave

a path to a positive future. This nonprofit is dedicated to serving youth in crisis throughout North Texas by providing the right tools to make positive life choices. What began in 2009 as a grassroots effort by one woman, Christina Bynum-Breaux to feed, clothe and mentor over 150 children in a local trailer park, has grown into a full-fledged foundation that has provided programming and support to thousands of children and their families.

Stepping Stones Foundation has worked hard to create awareness in the community and establish relationships with Child Protective Services, school intervention counselors and local law enforcement to refer children in need. As we meet these elementary, middle or high-school children, we perform a needs assessment, and resources or services are provided based upon availability.

HOW: There is strength and support in numbers, and GCS Moms League is that dependable village to help you raise a child. As the saying goes, 'A strong woman knows she has strength enough for the journey, but a woman of strength knows that it is in the journey where she will become strong.' Join GCS Moms League!

Get Involved: Participation from generous attendees and local businesses allows GCSML to provide fun events, educational opportunities, and other dedicated programs to give back to our community by volunteering and fundraising.

SocietyLifeMag.com | APRIL 2023 77 THEROSETABLE.COM | KATIE-ROSE WATSON SL RoseTableRecipes It’s berry picking season in Texas and this is the ideal recipe for those gorgeous strawberries! Toasted baguette topped with creamy mascarpone, fresh strawberries, basil, and a drizzle of balsamic reduction – it’s the perfect garden party appetizer. STRAWBERRIES it’s strawberry season! Sensational

This is the perfect garden party appetizer — ideal for any spring or summer party really! This is basically my dream summer snack. It’s a little sweet, a little savory, and packs a whole lot of flavor into an adorable package. It comes together very quickly too, making it an excellent (and impressive) dinner party starter for a busy hostess. This is one of those recipes that tasted even better than I thought it would. I made this beautiful plate of crostini for dinner with my parents a few days ago and I’m embarrassed to tell you that the three of us managed to polish off the entire plate and there were lots of “mmms!” around the room. If you can’t find mascarpone, you can of course get cream cheese. Goat or ricotta would be fun version as well, but I am a sucker for mascarpone! It’s creamier and quite a bit more spreadable than cream cheese, making it ideal to slather on crostini. ....................................................................................

I don’t have amounts in this recipe because I never measure when making something like this. I will tell you that for one small baguette, I used about 1/3 of my mascarpone container and half a box of strawberries so one standard box of strawberries will go a long way! One box of strawberries and one container of mascarpone should make at least two dozen crostini. Now, I keep a bottle of incredible balsamic reduction in my pantry, but if you don’t have some on hand, it’s easy to make! Just pour balsamic vinegar in a small sauce pan and cook until reduced by half. It’ll be nice and syrupy.

tip: It’s berry picking season now in Texas so check out the list of farms on page 46 to find some strawberry fields to pick your own!

INGREDIENTS

Baguette

Mascarpone, room temperature

Strawberries

Fresh basil, julienned or torn

Balsamic reduction (store bought or homemade)

....................................................................................

(1) Cut baguette into thick slices, drizzle with a bit of olive oil, and toast in the oven for a few minutes until nice and toasty. Anywhere from 350-400 degrees Fahrenheit works just fine.

(2) While baguette is toasting, rinse strawberries and pat dry with a paper towel. Hull and chop. Toss with basil.

....................................................................................

(3) When the baguette slices are ready, slather each crostini with a ton of mascarpone, top with strawberries and basil, and drizzle with balsamic reduction. Serve immediately.

Sports City Taverna

I don’t know if many recall their first cocktail, but I sure do. I was 18 and on a cruise. My mom suggested I order a Pink Squirrel. I remember the taste like it was yesterday: exactly like a Sweetheart Shake from Sonic, but with an after burn. I remember looking at the drink menu and being absolutely appalled by the pricing. “Eight Whole Dollars! I could have had four milkshakes from Sonic.” Oh girl, just you wait.

A few years later, I started working at a high-end restaurant in Dallas. People came in droves to pay $10 for Jalapeño Peach Martinis. I remember thinking cocktails were only attainable by those making six figure salaries. I had better get my act together and start working a real job that paid real money if I wanted to partake in fancy drinks. Fast forward another few years, I was working in commercial real estate and attending my first “young professional” happy

hour. I flip open the cocktail menu ready to order something very sophis ticated, only to find that cocktails were now trending towards $12. I wondered how I’d ever get ahead of this expensive cocktail game.

Twenty years after that first cocktail, it’s not unheard of to pay $18 to $24 to partake. Now I’m actually more shocked when the drinks are a good deal—skeptical even. But I’m here to share a secret with you: there’s a legit place in Fort Worth charging early 2000’s pricing and it’s not a sketchy dive. It’s is a brand spankin’ new establishment with amazing drink specials and crave-worthy food. Sports City Taverna is a chill, family friendly place to catch a big game (or two) during the day that comes alive for the adult set after hours—with different drink specials and entertainment almost every night of the week. You can’t survive in Texas without a Taco Tuesday, and Sports City

at just $2 each, with your choice of shrimp or chicken. Either choice pairs perfectly with a $5 margarita or ranch water specials. Other south of the border menu options are fajitas, quesadillas, burritos and nachos.

Other than their excellent drink pricing, another thing I admire about Sports City is the diversity of their menu. In addition to all the Tex Mex options, they also have wood fired pizzas that rival any place that specializes in such. The outside of the crust is crisp, but the inside has that hard to achieve dough pull. Pizza in any variety is my not-to-be-missed item here. They have salads, sandwiches (from the classic American BLT to Greek Gyro), wings, plus an extensive list of your favorite bar appetizers, such as onion rings, cheese fries and even egg rolls.

If it’s burgers you’re after, I suggest stopping by on Texas Thursday for their Smokehouse BBQ Burger. It pairs great with any of their $4 Texas beer pint specials. Plus, they have live acoustic country out on their spacious patio when the weather is nice. Other Thursday specials include $5 Texas vodkas (Titos, Deep Eddy and Western Son) and $5 TX Whiskey.

If you feel like dancing the night away, Sports City Taverna has a couple of nights for that, too. Plush Fridays and Saturdays start at 7pm with drink specials: $6 Patron, $5 Green Tea and $3 Fire Ball. The DJ starts at 9pm and spins all the way until 2am. It’s a one stop date night, with dinner, cocktails and dancing. On Saturdays and Sundays, Sports City offers brunch starting at 10am—from pancakes to omelets, and biscuits and gravy to avocado toast. Whether your favorite sports team wins or loses, you will always end up a winner with the best food and drink specials in the city.
