Home and Heaven THE PLACES WE LOVE HERE ARE ONLY A GLIMPSE OF THE HOME GOD IS PREPARING FOR US

There is something sacred about coming home. Maybe it is the familiar turn into the driveway, the sound of the front door closing behind us or the relief of setting down all we have carried through the day. Home has a way of whispering, You can rest here. Perhaps that is why the Bible so often uses “home“ when describing our relationship with God. We understand belonging. We understand longing for a place where we are known, loved and welcomed. Jesus spoke directly to that longing when He comforted His disciples in John 14. He told them not to let their hearts be troubled because His Father’s house has many rooms, and He was going ahead to prepare a place for them. Think about that for a moment. The God who created galaxies knows our desire to have a place that feels like ours. Heaven is not shown merely as a destination. It is described as home. Our earthly homes can give us beautiful glimpses of that promise. A table surrounded by people we love. A child asleep safely beneath our roof. The sound of family arriving for the holidays. A

quiet morning with coffee and Scripture. These things matter because home is rarely about walls. It is about presence. And that may be one of the greatest truths about heaven as well. The greatest treasure of eternity will not be streets of gold or gates of pearl. It will be the presence of God. Here, even our happiest homes are touched by imperfection. People grow up and move away. Relationships change. Chairs eventually sit empty. Houses are sold. Seasons end. The Bible never asks us to pretend those losses do not hurt. Instead, it gives us a hope greater than loss. Paul reminds believers in Philippians 3:20 that our citizenship is in heaven. Hebrews speaks of people of faith longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Revelation ends with an extraordinary image: God dwelling with His people, wiping away every tear, with death, mourning, pain—gone. No more hospital rooms. No more difficult goodbyes. No more worrying about someone we love. No more wondering how much time remains. Only home.

That promise does not make this life less meaningful. It makes it more meaningful. Knowing our earthly homes are temporary should make us even more grateful for what happens inside them today. Open the door. Gather around the table. Say the words that need saying. Forgive more quickly. Stay a little longer. Love the people God has placed beneath your roof and within your life. Make your home a place where grace lives comfortably. Because someday, every house we have known will be behind us. But for those who belong to Christ, we will not be homeless. We will simply be going Home. And when that day comes for each one of us, perhaps we will finally understand why our hearts spent a lifetime longing for a place of perfect peace, belonging and love—a place that always felt somehow familiar, even before we arrived. We were homesick for Heaven all along.

HOW TO BUY A VAN FOR $100 100 WOMEN WHO CARE Sixty-five women turned one hour and $100 each into a $6,500 community investment during the Q3 Giving Event of 100 Women Who Care Northeast Tarrant County. The group selected The Clubhouse for Special Needs in Bedford, which serves teens and young adults with intellectual challenges through programs focused on socialization, life skills and independence. The $6,500 donation will go to support the Clubhouse’s “Fuel the Fun” North Texas Giving Day campaign as a matching grant, helping the organization work toward purchasing a used 15-passenger van. The van expands opportunities for Clubbers to participate in field trips and community activities. This September, Galleria Dallas is partnering with Grant Halliburton Foundation to recognize National Suicide Prevention Month with a message centered on hope, connection and greater awareness of mental health resources. From September 1-27, shoppers can visit “The Art of Hope: Celebrating 20 Years of Grant Halliburton Foundation,” a special Gallery Wall installation on Level 1 across from Sephora. The display highlights the Dallas-based nonprofit’s mission to strengthen the network of mental health resources available to children, teens and young adults while also commemorating the foundation’s 20th anniversary. At the heart of the installation is a simple, but powerful message—hope can begin with one person, one conversation or one moment of courage. Visitors can learn more about the foundation’s programs, mental health education efforts and community resources designed to help young people and families better understand mental wellness and know where to turn when support is needed. A QR code featured on the Gallery Wall connects shoppers to a companion webpage with additional information about the foundation, upcoming programs and helpful mental health resources. SOUTHLAKE WOMEN’S CLUB KICKS OFF NEW YEAR The Southlake Women’s Club has officially launched its 2026–2027 club year, welcoming members and prospective members for another season centered on friendship, service, philanthropy and meaningful community involvement. The year began in late August with an “Arrivederci Summer” social hosted at a private Westlake residence provided by RPG Homes. The evening offered members an opportunity to reconnect after summer, welcome new faces and enjoy a fashion show presented by The Hue Theory. With style, conversation and fellowship setting the tone, the gathering reflected the social connection that has remained at the heart of the organization for more than four decades. In September, members gathered at The Westin Southlake for the first luncheon of the new club year, sponsored by Southlake Travel. The event introduced the 2026–2027 Executive Board, welcomed new members and encouraged involvement across the club’s many committees, including Art in the Square, Community Outreach, Club Support, Programs and Membership. Author John Israel served as the featured speaker, sharing the personal experiences that inspired his book, Mr. Thank You. His message explored the transformative power of gratitude and how a simple shift in perspective can strengthen relationships, deepen connections and bring greater meaning to everyday life. The luncheon also recognized Lisa Cummings as Member of the Month in appreciation of her contributions to the Community Outreach Committee and her enthusiastic support of club development and member engagement. TEXAS WOMEN’S OPEN EXTENDS ITS STAY IN GRAPEVINE GRAPEVINE KEEPS THE TEXAS WOMEN’S OPEN THROUGH 2031 The Destination Grapevine Texas Women’s Open is staying right where it belongs. Following three successful years in Grapevine, the Northern Texas PGA and Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau have extended their partnership for an additional five years, keeping the tournament in Grapevine through 2031. The event has quickly established itself as the largest state women’s open in the United States and one of Grapevine’s standout sporting events. Since moving to Grapevine in 2024, the tournament has experienced remarkable growth. The professional field increased from 46 players representing 12 countries and 15 states in 2024 to 106 professionals from 19 countries and 28 states in 2026. Growing interest even led to the addition of a play-in qualifier ahead of the 2026 championship. Grapevine has also given the tournament plenty of unmistakable Texas personality. A Texas-sized jumbotron leaderboard adds excitement for players and spectators, while the champion receives a pair of custom-painted Texas Women’s Open cowboy boots—an only-in-Texas finishing touch that has become part of the tournament experience. Northern Texas PGA CEO Mark Harrison praised the partnership, saying the organization feels it has found a “true home” for the Texas Women’s Open in Grapevine and looks forward to bringing the championship back for years to come. The partnership’s impact extends beyond tournament week. Each year, a $5,000 college scholarship is awarded to a Grapevine ISD high school senior, while Destination Grapevine also supports the next generation of players as title sponsor of the Junior Texas Women’s Open. TASTE PROJECT’S NEW FALL MENU & CELEBRITY CHEF SERIES

INVITING NORTH TEXAS TO GATHER AROUND THE TABLE

Taste Project is welcoming fall with a new seasonal menu and a renewed invitation for North Texans to gather around the table in support of neighbors facing food insecurity. Through its Taste Community Restaurants in Fort Worth and Arlington, the nonprofit serves chef-prepared meals in a welcoming, pay-what-you-can setting. Guests are invited to pay what they can afford, pay what they typically would, or contribute a little extra to help cover a meal for someone else. Because guest contributions do not fully fund operations, about 60% of the cost of each meal depends on outside support from donors who believe everyone deserves access to fresh, nutritious food served with dignity. This fall’s menu features seasonal ingredients and comforting dishes designed to nourish both body and spirit. But at Taste Project, the experience is about more than what is on the plate. Shared tables create space for conversation, connection and community among people who might not otherwise meet. “Guests come for the food and stay for the community,” shares founder and CEO Chef Jeff Williams. That spirit is central to the organization’s mission—meeting basic needs while helping people feel seen, valued and connected. Guests can support the Taste Project mission simply by dining. For one longtime James Landscaping client, that evolution was not a sign that the original landscape had failed—it was proof that it had lived. The James Landscaping team now had a new assignment—listen to what the yard had become, solve new challenges beneath mature tree shade and make this client’s already-loved landscape work beautifully for its next chapter.

WHEN THE GARDEN BORROWING GROWS UP SCENERY

“The best landscapes don’t just stay the same — they get better with time.” The most noticeable change at this North Texas home was overhead. As the property’s trees matured, their canopies cast more shade across areas that once supported healthy turf. It’s a familiar Texas dilemma— homeowners value the beauty, cooling effect and character of established trees, but the conditions beneath them can change dramatically over time. Instead of fighting the yard, the James Landscaping team designed around what nature was already doing. Where grass could still thrive, turf was restored to bring back softness and continuity. In increasingly shaded areas, however, the better answer was to enlarge existing beds and replace struggling lawn with groundcovers better suited to the conditions. Mondo grass and Asian jasmine now sweep through those shaded spaces, adding texture and dependable green coverage without asking a sun-starved lawn to do the impossible. The change gives the beds a more 26

established, layered appearance while allowing the mature tree canopy to become part of the design rather than something to work around. The team also replenished planting areas where shrubs, ornamentals and trees had been lost through the years, restoring fullness and balance. New trees were integrated with the same attention to long-term performance. When James Landscaping adds a tree to a property with an existing sprinkler system, they include a dedicated bubbler to deliver water where the young tree needs it most. Root stimulator is also incorporated into the planting process to encourage healthy establishment from the start. It’s a thoughtful shift in perspective— preserving what has matured, replacing what no longer works and allowing the landscape to evolve naturally. The result feels fuller, calmer and more intentional, honoring the original character of the space while responding to the yard as it exists today.

THE PATH FORWARD

A beautiful landscape should invite you into it, not make you watch your footing. That became the team’s next priority. Around the raised vegetable garden beds, weather and use had taken their toll on the aging pathways, so James Landscaping refreshed the gravel and flagstone, restoring a crisp, finished look while making the area easier to navigate. Elsewhere, sections that tended to stay muddy after rain were reworked with decorative gravel, as well as strategically placed flagstone. The solution does more than disguise any problem spots. It creates dependable footing, keeps traffic out of wet soil and gives those transitional areas the same intentional appearance as the rest of the garden. The largest pathway improvement addressed an expansive run of existing flagstone stepping stones. Over time, individual stones can settle unevenly, creating an awkward walking surface and interrupting the visual rhythm of a walkway. The team replaced that path arrangement with flagstone that was set on decomposed granite, creating a more level, cohesive route through the yard. The material choice still feels relaxed and organic, but the experience underfoot is markedly improved. That balance between practicality and beauty is where thoughtful landscape design earns its keep. A path is never just a path. It guides movement, frames the planting beds, connects destinations and also determines how comfortably a homeowner can enjoy the space. Here, the renewed walkways tie together the vegetable garden, lawn, planting areas and gathering spaces so the property feels less like separate zones and more like one continuous garden. BEAUTY THAT KEEPS GROWING Of course, some of the most important landscape work is designed to be noticed only when it is doing its job. Near the house, drainage had become a concern, where runoff needed a deliberate route away from the structure. James Landscaping answered with a dry creek bed positioned close to the home, turning a functional necessity into a natural-looking feature. The team also relocated the exit of a downspout drain so water could empty into the dry creek bed outside the gate. During wet weather, the feature helps direct runoff where it needs to go. During dry stretches, it simply reads as part of the landscape—stone, texture and 28

movement without looking like infrastructure dropped into the garden. That same philosophy carries through the entire refresh. The most successful solutions do not announce themselves as repairs. They simply make the property feel easier, safer and more complete. Expanded beds answer the shade. Gravel answers the mud. A level flagstone path answers uneven footing. A dry creek bed answers drainage. Together, those details reveal the craft behind a mature landscape. It’s not just knowing what to add. It’s also knowing what has changed, why it changed and how to respond in a way that looks as though it belonged there all along.

For one October weekend each year, Southlake Town Square will trade its everyday polish for lederhosen, live music, bratwurst and plenty of Bavarian-style fun as Oktoberfest Southlake celebrates 25 years. Hosted by the Southlake Chamber of Commerce, the three-day festival has grown into one of the area’s largest community celebrations, drawing more than 100,000 visitors annually. This year’s milestone weekend promises a festive mix of food, music, shopping, contests and family entertainment—all wrapped in the welcoming spirit that has made Oktoberfest a Southlake tradition for a quarter century. —————————————————————————————————————————— WHO: Behind Oktoberfest Southlake is the Southlake Chamber of Commerce, the organization that brings businesses, residents, volunteers, sponsors, vendors and visitors together for one of the community’s signature weekends. What began as a local celebration has become a regional draw, welcoming more than 100,000 visitors each year to the heart of Southlake. The crowd is part of what makes the festival feel so distinctive—longtime local families mingle with visitors from across North Texas, children head for games and activities, music fans gather near the stages, shoppers browse artisan booths and, of course, dachshund owners and devoted fans turn out for one of the festival’s most anticipated traditions—the Wiener Dog Races. Guests can expect favorites such as bratwurst, pretzels and schnitzel alongside local food and beverage options, plus handcrafted arts and crafts booths, children’s activities and entertainment throughout the weekend. Live music will fill three stages, with the 2026 lineup including Friday performances by Ashmore and AC/DC tribute band Back in Black, followed Saturday by North Texas blues favorite Texas Flood and headliner Larger Than Life, a high-energy boy-band tribute experience. Festival traditions add another layer of fun. The Stein Hoisting Contest challenges competitors Friday and Saturday evenings to see who can keep a full stein raised the longest, while Saturday morning’s Wiener Dog festivities begin with a costume contest at 9:30am before the racing starts at 10am. SONGS SMILES CONNECTIONS Sometimes connection returns in the most unexpected way. A familiar melody begins, a hand starts keeping time, a face brightens and, for a few precious minutes, the distance created by dementia seems to soften. A daughter hears her mother sing a lyric she has known for decades. A husband sees the woman he loves smile at a song from their younger years. A family shares a laugh, a story or simply a moment that feels wonderfully familiar. Those moments cannot erase Alzheimer’s, but they can remind everyone in the room that the person they love is still there. Creating more of those moments is at the heart of Songs & Smiles of Grapevine. 56

SL greater good Songs & Smiles grew from an experience that was deeply personal for co-founders Eric and Sheryl Kolb. Sheryl’s mother, Trish, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2008, and the family cared for her for years before her death in 2019. Sheryl had also lost her grandmother to the disease. In July 2017, while celebrating Trish’s 78th birthday, Sheryl created what would become the first Songs & Smiles event. What began as a family gathering revealed something larger — music, shared experiences and intentional moments of joy could help people stay connected even as dementia changed the way they communicated. Songs & Smiles later became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to help others.

THE POWER OF A FAMILIAR SONG

Music remains one of the organizations most visible tools. Songs & Smiles nonprofit presents interactive singalongs designed with people living with dementia in mind. The formula is intentionally uncomplicated—uplifting songs plus an engaging leader and easy-to-read lyrics that invite everyone to participate. The music often comes from the Great American Songbook and other familiar eras, giving participants an opportunity to reconnect with songs tied to longheld memories and emotions. Online

Songs & Smiles is a nonprofit based in Grapevine with a meaningful mission — keeping families connected during the Alzheimer’s journey. Rather than centering its work on finding a cure, the organization focuses on care — practical, positive ways to support people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, while also encouraging the family members, friends and caregivers walking beside them. Its programs are built around an idea that can be easy to lose sight of when memory begins to fade — a person’s capacity for love, emotion joy and connection can remain even when recent memories do not.

JOY ONE SINGALONG AT A TIME

The reach continues to grow. In 2025, Songs & Smiles presented more than 400 in-person singalong shows, including 380 led by Eric Kolb, and they also added singalong leaders in Ohio, Oklahoma and Michigan. Today, its network includes leaders serving communities in Texas and several other states. Those numbers are meaningful, but the real impact is found

in what happens inside each room— people joining in, the families engaging together and caregivers gaining another way to create a positive experience with someone they love.

A MAGAZINE MADE FOR MEMORIES

Songs & Smiles nonprofit has also created a resource especially close to the heart of anyone who loves magazines called Joyful Memories. Designed for people living with dementia and the families who spend time with them, the publication removes many of the elements that can

make traditional magazines confusing or frustrating. There are no advertisements, no tiny type and no emphasis on current events. Instead, the pages are only built around approachable themes, engaging images and content meant to simply spark conversation, recognition and enjoyment. Topics have included dogs, cats, cars, toys, musical instruments, the moon and stars and sweets—subjects that invite a smile or a story without pressure to remember a date, name or recent event.

PAGES THAT SPARK CONNECTION

In 2025, Songs & Smiles published its eighth issue of Joyful Memories and, with grant support from AWARE North Texas, distributed 2,480 copies at no charge to dementia care organizations in Dallas and Collin counties. The organization’s work recognizes that meaningful engagement does not have to be complicated. Sometimes a photograph of a classic car, a favorite dessert or a beloved pet can open the door to a conversation that might not otherwise happen.

CARING FOR THE CAREGIVERS

Just as importantly, Songs & Smiles understands that Alzheimer’s affects far more than the person who receives the diagnosis. Caregivers often carry an exhausting combination of responsibility, grief, uncertainty and love. To support them, the nonprofit provides care tips, educational resources, workshops, book recommendations and caregiver stories. In Grapevine, the organization also hosts Walk & Talk, a free caregiver support gathering that combines conversation,

time outdoors and exercise—creating space for people affected by dementia to be together with others who can also understand the journey.

CAPTURING WHAT MATTERS MOST

Even family photographs are part of the mission. Through a partnership with professional photographer Brad Newton, Songs & Smiles offers family photo sessions at memory care, assisted living and independent living communities throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The idea is simple—keep making memories worth capturing. A dementia diagnosis can cause families to focus so heavily on what is changing that they forget to document what is still happening—the birthdays,the anniversaries, the visits, the hugs and the generations gathered in the same frame.

CELEBRATING WHAT REMAINS

That emphasis on what remains may be the most powerful part of the nonprofit’s work. Alzheimer’s can change familiar patterns of communication, but Songs & Smiles refuses to define a person only by what the disease has taken away. Its approach looks for the abilities, emotions and relationships that are still present. It invites families to sing together instead of searching for the perfect words, to share a magazine instead of testing someone’s memory, to walk together, take a photo, tell a story and then notice the smile when it comes.

SMALL MOMENTS, LASTING MEANING

For a family facing dementia, the smallest moments can carry the greatest meaning.

A shared laugh, a familiar song, a warm embrace, a remembered story, or simply sitting together can become something deeply treasured. These moments may seem ordinary, but they offer reassurance, connection and joy in the midst of an often difficult journey. Songs & Smiles helps families recognize and create more of those truly meaningful experiences— reminding them that even when their memories fade, the love, emotion and connection can still shine through.

Cool in the tins for five minutes, then transfer to a cooling sheet and repeat with remaining pie dough. ....................................................................................................... Note: these freeze beautifully! I made these weeks before my party and thawed them on the counter the night before. We popped them in the oven at 350 for 5 minutes to crisp up the crust—but that’s optional.

COCINA DE MEXICO food with an energetic atmosphere. The Grapevine location brings that same larger-than-life personality to Tarrant County. The restaurant is designed to be as much about the experience as it is the food, with greenery everywhere, eye-catching décor and warm lighting with spaces designed for everything from dinner with friends, celebrations and private events. For nearly a year, drivers along Highway 114 in Grapevine have been asking the same question: When is Vidorra finally going to open? The building seemed ready for guests long before its doors officially opened. The exterior underwent a face lift, the signage was up and from the road it appeared as though opening day was right around the corner. Instead, weeks turned into months, making Vidorra one of Grapevine’s most anticipated openings. The wait ended on August 31st, when the modern Mexican restaurant officially welcomed guests.

Of course, the food is the main attraction. Vidorra’s menu puts a modern spin on our Mexican favorites, with house-made guacamole, street tacos, fajitas, enchiladas and their seafood aguachile among the selections. One of their signature dishes is the Parrillada en Fuego, an assortment of grilled meats and accompaniments served tableside in a sizzling 400 degree molcajete. It’s dramatic, shareable and exactly the kind of dish that fits Vidorra’s overthe-top atmosphere. On a girl’s night out, I dug into the Chicken Flautas as my main dish and

Vidorra, whose name translates to “the good life,” comes from the Dallas-based hospitality group Milkshake Concepts. The Grapevine restaurant is their fifth Dallas-Fort Worth location, joining Vidorra restaurants in Dallas, Addison, Grand Prairie and Rockwall. The original debuted in Deep Ellum in 2018 and quickly became “Where Locals go” for modern Mexican

shared the Empanadas with the table. Both items are not-tobe-missed. They pack a ton of flavor without a ton of spice. And while you think you know these classic Tex-Mex dishes— no one does them like Vidorra. The cocktail menu and spacious modern bar deserve just as much attention as the cuisine. Margaritas are a specialty here, alongside premium tequilas and seasonal cocktails. For something completely out of the ordinary and a must-try is Vidorra’s signature Soft Serve Margarita. It comes in either Pineapple or Strawberry, but my favorite is to swirl them, so you get to try a little of both. It sounds unusual, but it has become one of the brand’s most recognizable drinks. Vidorra Grapevine also plans to make weekends an event with a lively brunch menu. Guests can expect brunch dishes such as Chilaquiles and Pan Dulce French Toast, served along with brunch cocktails and tableside mimosas. Their weekday lunch specials and happy hour deals add plenty of reasons to stop in, with a lunch complete with a soda for only $12.

Vidorra Grapevine’s opening is particularly exciting because local passers-by had plenty of time to watch the restaurant’s transformation unfold—and as they say, good things come to those who wait. The location has seen its share of familiar restaurant concepts over the years, most recently Hoffbrau Steak & Grill House. But once Vidorra’s colorful transformation began taking shape, curiosity quickly turned to anticipation— especially as the new restaurant appeared tantalizingly close to opening for months. Now, the wait is over. Vidorra is officially open, bringing bold Mexican flavors, over-the-top cocktails and the lively taste of “the good life” to Grapevine.
