“My name is Johnny Koepp, founder of Veritas Roofing. I’ve built my business on integrity, hard work, and taking care of people. But the people who matter most are at home. As a father and business owner, I want to bring my best every day. Years of knee and shoulder pain made that increasingly difficult. I was tired of letting pain dictate what I could do. That’s when I discovered PEMF Recovery. Making recovery a priority has helped me regain the energy, mobility, and confidence to lead my business, enjoy an active life, and most importantly, be the father my child deserves.” ————————————————————————————————————————

“Taking care of myself isn't just about feeling better. It's about being the best leader, business owner and father I can be. PEMF Recovery Plus helps me manage discomfort, sleep better, and approach each day with more energy and clarity. My employees deserve the best version of me, but most importantly, I want to be the best father I can possibly be.” ———————————————————————————————————————————————————

PUTTING MY HEALTH FIRST “As the owner of Veritas Roofing, I’m constantly balancing employees, customers, projects, and other decisions that demand my attention. Running a business can be physically and mentally exhausting—especially when you’re dealing with ongoing pain. For years, I struggled with significant knee and shoulder issues. My knees had reached the point where doctors were discussing replacement surgery, and I wasn’t ready to take that step. I wanted another way to manage my discomfort while supporting my overall health. That’s what initially interested me in PEMF Recovery Plus. I wasn't simply looking for pain relief. I wanted better recovery, more energy, improved focus, and the ability to perform at my very best.” RELIEF THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE “One of the first things I noticed after starting PEMF Recovery Plus was how much better my knees felt following treatment. I could go a couple of days with noticeably less discomfort, which was a significant improvement for me. When you are constantly dealing with pain, it consumes more of your attention than you realize. Experiencing that relief allowed me to focus more on my business, my employees, and my family. I appreciate being able to incorporate sessions into my schedule rather than waiting until the discomfort becomes unbearable for me. It’s an opportunity for me to slow down, recharge, and give my body the attention it deserves.”

BETTER SLEEP, STRONGER PERFORMANCE “Beyond the physical relief, one of the biggest surprises has been the improvement in my sleep. Some of the best nights of rest I've experienced in the past year have followed PEMF sessions. I'll go home after and sleep like a baby, waking up feeling refreshed and ready for whatever the day brings. That kind of recovery makes a tremendous difference when you’re running a company. Better sleep means more energy, sharper thinking, and greater clarity. People depend on me to stay engaged, solve problems, and lead effectively. When I feel better physically and mentally, I’m able to give more to everyone counting on me.” BEING THE BEST VERSION OF MYSELF “Entrepreneurs often put themselves last. There’s always something demanding our attention. If we don't prioritize our health, eventually it catches up with you. PEMF Recovery Plus is one way I proactively invest in myself. I recommend it to business owners and anyone balancing a demanding lifestyle because recovery is much more than physical comfort. For me, it's about continuing to build a successful company while having the energy to enjoy life outside of work. And above all else, I want my child to have a father who's healthy, active, present, and ready to make memories together. Taking care of myself helps make that possible. That's what makes recovery such a worthwhile investment.”

IT'S NOT WHAT YOU KNOW...

“Sometimes the smartest thing you can know is who to ask.”

Life has a funny way of reminding us that we don’t have all the answers. Just when I think I have things figured out, something new comes along—a big decision to make, a tough challenge to face or an opportunity I’m not quite sure how to navigate. In times like this, I really miss my Dad who always said he knew a little bit about a lot of things, but not a lot about anything (that wasn’t really true, but he did always have a way of giving sound advice). Sometimes all it takes is one conversation with the right person to make everything a little clearer. That’s one of the things I love most about putting together our annual Expert Advice Q&A issue. In my more than 20 years of publishing Society Life Magazine, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know many wonderful people in our community. Some are business owners, some are industry leaders and some have become great friends along the way. But the thing that always stands out to me isn’t just what they know or how successful they’ve become. It’s how much they genuinely care about helping others. And I think that matters now more than ever. We live in a world today where information is literally at our fingertips. We can search for almost anything and get over a thousand different answers in seconds. But there’s a big difference between just finding information and getting expert advice from someone who truly understands your situation and has the real world experience to guide you in the right direction. That’s what this issue is all about. Within these pages, you’ll meet local professionals who share more than just their expertise. They share their time, their experiences and their desire to help you make informed decisions with confidence. Whether you’re thinking about your health, your home, your family, your finances or your future, you’ll likely find something here that speaks to you. Maybe you’ll even find the right person to answer a question that’s been on your mind. Thank you for continuing to read Society Life. Being able to publish it each and every month is a privilege I never take for granted. So, here’s to good advice, making meaningful connections and the people who help us out when we don’t know what to do. Because there’s no such thing as having all the answers—but knowing the right people to ask is a pretty great start! Be still and Know. A SEASON OF SACRED STILLNESS

As the calendar begins to fill with holiday gatherings, deadlines, shopping lists, family responsibilities, and expectations, the world outside grows quieter while our lives often grow louder. We move from one obligation to the next, telling ourselves we will slow down when everything is finished. Yet the finish line keeps moving. Into that noise, God offers an invitation as gentle as it is powerful: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

In Scripture, knowing God is more than knowing facts about Him. It’s remembering His character—faithful even when all of your circumstances change, present when answers are delayed, and steadfast when our own strength begins to run thin. It means loosening our grip on what we can not control and trusting the One who holds what we cannot see.

Those words are more than a comforting phrase for a peaceful morning. Psalm 46 speaks of the mountains shaking, waters roaring, and nations in turmoil. It reminds us that stillness is not reserved for moments when life is calm. It is an act of faith right in the middle of uncertainty.

Nature offers a beautiful picture of that trust. A tree does not cling desperately to every leaf through winter. It releases what has served its purpose, allowing a season of rest before new growth begins. Perhaps we are being invited to release something, too—an impossible expectation, the need to have every answer, an old regret, or the nagging belief that our worth depends on us staying busy.

Being still does not mean you are giving up, ignoring our responsibilities, or even pretending our worries are small. It means always remembering that God is greater.

Jesus understood the immense value of stepping away. Throughout the Gospels, He withdrew from the crowds to pray. If the Son of God made that room for quiet

communion with His Father, surely we can make room for a few unhurried moments in our own days. Maybe stillness begins with turning off the radio during a drive home. Sitting with a warm cup of coffee before reaching for our phones. Whispering a prayer before opening the next email. Or simply watching the last leaves fall and recognizing that God is at work even when the world appears to be resting. The coming winter reminds us that not every season is meant for blooming. Some seasons are meant for rooting deeper, drawing closer, and being renewed in ways no one else can see. So as autumn fades and winter approaches, give yourself permission to be quiet. Listen longer. Pray honestly. Let the noise settle. You do not have to carry the weight of every tomorrow today. Be still. God is already there.

RIPE READS BOOK REVIEWS

At only 21 years old, Cole Anderson brings a young perspective to the crowded world of personal development with Just Look Up: A 21-Year-Old’s Guide to Growth, Confidence, and Living Fully. Rather than pretending to have every answer, Anderson writes from the perspective of someone who is still building, learning and figuring life out alongside the audience he hopes to reach. That authenticity is what makes the book relatable for teens, college students, young professionals and anyone standing at the beginning of a new chapter. Just Look Up is centered on a powerful idea—growth begins when we become more intentional about where we place our attention, how we use our time and what we believe is possible for ourselves. Anderson combines his own personal experiences with lessons gathered from successful executives and respected sources, creating a practical guide to developing the traits and habits that can move both a career and a life forward.

JUST LOOK UP

One of the book’s strongest qualities is its accessibility. Anderson does not bury his message beneath complicated theories or motivational clichés. His advice is straightforward, encouraging and easy to put into practice. Topics such as building confidence, managing time, public speaking, communicating effectively, entrepreneurship and creating personal success are presented in a way that feels useful rather than overwhelming.

There’s also something compelling about receiving this advice from a writer close in age to the readers who may need it most. Anderson understands the pressure young adults face to have everything figured out quickly. Instead of encouraging perfection, he emphasizes progress, curiosity, discipline and the willingness to keep learning. His voice feels less like a lecture from someone looking backward and more like encouragement from someone moving forward with you. The title itself becomes a fitting reminder throughout the book. In a world where it is easy to spend our days looking down at a phone, worrying about comparison or becoming consumed by the next task, “just look up” feels both literal and symbolic. Pay attention. Connect with people. Notice opportunities. Take the chance. Be present. Keep growing. Ultimately, Just Look Up is an uplifting, quick and worthwhile read filled with ideas young adults can begin using immediately. Anderson’s enthusiasm for self-improvement is contagious, but the book never suggests success happens overnight. Instead, it makes a convincing case that meaningful change is built through everyday choices, stronger habits and the confidence to step out of comfort zones. It is an impressive debut from a young author with an encouraging message—you do not have to know exactly where life is taking you to start becoming the person you want to be.

A 21-Year-Old’s Guide to Growth, Confidence, and Living Fully Refreshingly honest, wildly relatable and sharply motivating life guide written by someone in the thick of figuring it out

At just 21 years old, Anderson draws from his own experiences, lessons from business leaders and a passion for self-improvement to encourage other young adults to pursue meaningful goals. Through his debut book, Just Look Up, he shares practical insights on communication, time management, confidence, career development and making the most of life’s opportunities. Q&A

exper t advice with DAVID & JENNIFER MARTIN

In our area of North Texas, a roof is more than just shingles and nails. It is your family’s shelter, a homeowner's biggest investment and the first line of defense against everything that Mother Nature can throw our way. And when the skies turn dark and the storms roll in, homeowners need more than any roofing contractor. They need someone they can truly trust. For 30 years, that trust has had a name:

STRAIGHT TALK FROM THE ROOFTOP

Q&A exper t advice Q: What's the most important thing homeowners should look for when hiring a roofing contractor? David: Start with someone local, experienced and properly insured. Ask for references, find out who’s actually doing the work and make sure the company has a history of standing behind its projects. Texas doesn’t require roofing contractors to hold a state roofing license, so doing your homework is especially important. A trustworthy contractor should welcome your questions. Q: Does storm damage automatically mean that I need a new roof? David: Absolutely not. Missing shingles, leaks or damage to a specific area may often be repairable. The first step should always be a thorough inspection to determine the condition of the roof and the best solution. We believe homeowners deserve honest recommendations, whether that means a repair or a complete replacement. Q: What should homeowners know about roofing insurance claims? Jennifer: Truly understanding your policy, deductible and repair estimates is especially important. We explain the roofing work involved, then document observed damage and discuss repair estimate with the insurance adjuster. Coverage decisions and claim negotiations remain with the insurer, homeowner or an appropriately licensed professional. Q: Can my roofing contractor waive my insurance deductible? Jennifer: No. Texas law requires all homeowners to pay their applicable property insurance deductible. Contractors cannot legally waive, rebate or absorb it. If someone offers to make your deductible disappear, that’s a warning sign. Homeowners should always understand the terms of their contract before signing. Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give every North Texas homeowner? David: Don’t ignore small roofing problems. A minor leak or a few missing shingles can turn into more costly damage if it’s left unaddressed. Get your roof inspected after significant storms, ask questions and work with someone local who will give you an honest, straightforward assessment.

In 30 years a lot can change. Neighborhoods grow, families evolve and life has a way of bringing unexpected challenges and opportunities. But some things are built to stand the test of time. Since 1996, David and Jennifer Martin have built far more than roofs across North Texas. They’ve built a life, a family business and a legacy rooted in hard work, honesty and an unwavering commitment to doing what’s right. Their journey hasn’t always been easy, but every challenge, lesson learned and milestone celebrated has helped shape the company they are today — one guided by three timeless principles: trust, quality and integrity.

WHAT 30 YEARS HAS BUILT —————————————————————————————————

For David and Jennifer Martin, three decades in roofing have been about more than the work itself. They have been about lessons learned, family values and a legacy built to last. There was a time when the sound of rain made David Martin nervous. Early in his roofing career, he was learning a craft that left little room for shortcuts. Flashing, sealing, caulking every detail mattered, and the next North Texas downpour could expose what he had yet to master. “When it rained, I was shuddering in my boots waiting for a dozen calls to come in,” David once admitted. That’s not the story people expect from a well-established roofing company’s founder. But David has never pretended success arrived fully formed. What he started in 1996 grew through difficult lessons, hard-earned experience and a determination to make each job better than the last. As David Martin & Son Roofing celebrates its 30th anniversary, the family is looking beyond the roofs they’ve completed to the people who welcomed them, the challenges they’ve overcome and the values that have held everything together. In an industry where companies come and go, remaining a trusted name for three decades is a milestone that means something special. —————————————————————————————————

A STRONG FOUNDATION LONG BEFORE THE FIRST ROOF

————————————————————————————————— For David, the back story begins well before he entered the roofing business. Raised by his grandparents as a boy, he learned early that your word matters, work should always be done properly and character is revealed by what you do when no one is watching. His principles were uncomplicated—don’t lie, don’t steal, don’t cheat. In his 20s, David built a successful career in automotive sales and management, working with Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz dealerships. Along the way, he earned top sales honors and developed an appreciation for fine craftsmanship, attention to detail and the importance of earning a customer’s confidence. While luxury automobiles and roofing may seem worlds apart, David discovered they share something essential—people want to know they can trust the person that they're doing business with. In October 1996, David took those lessons into a new chapter when he established David Martin & Son Roofing. Experience still had to be earned one project at a time. He has spoken candidly about the years it took to

For the Martins, the true measure of success has never been the number of roofs they’ve installed, but the lives they’ve touched and the trust they’ve earned along the way. From humble beginnings and hard-earned lessons to a thriving family business welcoming its next generation, theirs is a story of perseverance, gratitude and genuine dedication. Their longtime motto, “Building relationships one roof at a time,” reflects a genuine philosophy that extends far beyond just roofing. As David Martin & Son Roofing celebrates its 30th anniversary, we look back at the people, experiences and family values that have shaped their extraordinary journey — and the lasting legacy that continues to unfold today.

master the finer points of preventing leaks and the corrections that made him better at his craft. There were no shortcuts to the experience he wanted to provide to his neighbors. Every ladder climbed, obstacle overcome and lesson learned helped shape his expertise and strengthen his commitment to doing things better. “Everyone makes mistakes—it’s how you learn, grow and improve,” he has shared. “But the trick is making new mistakes, not repeating old ones.” Three decades later, that principle remains. Through changing times, growing competition and the unpredictable nature of Texas weather, David has learned that longevity isn’t simply about staying in business. It’s about taking responsibility, continually improving and earning people’s confidence year after year. ——————————————————

TWO JOURNEYS ONE SHARED PURPOSE

—————————————————— Just as David’s own experiences shaped his approach to business, Jennifer Huynh Martin brought her own deeply rooted family values, unique perspective and determination to their shared journey. As a first-generation immigrant from Vietnam, Jennifer developed her work ethic helping manage her parents’ businesses. Subsequent experience as both a dental assistant and an office manager further strengthened her organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to connect with people on a personal level. Jennifer joined David years after he had established the company, bringing fresh perspective and becoming a steady presence alongside him. The drive that carried her from helping her parents to building a career of her own has also made her an example for women pursuing opportunities in industries where they have not always been well represented. Her ability to listen, remember details and put people at ease has helped turn unfamiliar names into familiar faces. Together, they both hare an understanding that behind every roofing project is a homeowner placing confidence in them. It' is a responsibility neither takes lightly. They bring different strengths to their partnership—a dynamic David sums up with affection: “I might be the cowboy hat, but she’s the compass.”

BEYOND THE SHINGLES

Q&A

exper t advice Q: What values have guided David Martin & Son Roofing for the past 30 years? David: Don’t lie, don’t steal, don’t cheat. Those are the principles I grew up with, and they’re the principles we’ve built this company around. We believe in treating people fairly, telling the truth and standing behind the work we do. If it’s not good enough for our own home, it’s not good enough for yours. Q: What’s your secret to working so successfully as husband and wife? David: I might be the cowboy hat, but she’s the compass. Jennifer keeps so many parts of this business moving. We bring different strengths to the table, but we share the same commitment to taking care of our customers and doing the job right. Q: How has family shaped the culture of the company? Jennifer: We treat our crews like family. That’s why they also treat our customers like family, too. The relationships we’ve built with our team are incredibly important. When people feel respected and valued, that care carries through to their work and the homeowners we serve. Q: What does having Jake involved mean for the future? David & Jennifer: Jake represents the next generation of our family business. With his education, leadership experience and fresh perspective, he brings new ideas while learning the values and standards that have guided the company since 1996. Continuing that commitment to integrity and customer relationships is central to the legacy we’re building. Q: After 30 years, how do you define success? David: It’s about more than how many roofs we’ve installed. What matters most is how many people we’ve helped, how many relationships we have built and whether our customers know that they can count on us. That’s always been our goal— building relationships one roof at a time.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PROJECTS

—————————————————————————————————

David and Jennifer have built a partnership grounded in shared values, mutual respect and an unwavering determination to do what’s right. Through every challenge and triumph, a commitment to excellence and to each other has never wavered. Across the Martins’ past interviews, the conversation about what has made these 30 years meaningful inevitably returns to people. Homeowners who first called them after a hailstorm have returned years later, neighbors have recommended them to one another, and employees who have stayed for a decade or more, becoming part of the business’s history. “We treat our crews just like family,” Jennifer has shared. “That’s why they treat our customers like family, too.” After three decades, the Martins understand that roofing isn't simply about shingles and construction. It’s about listening when someone is worried about their home, communicating honestly and being there when people need help. Those lessons have become just as important as anything David learned on a rooftop. That sense of connection has shown itself in moments that have nothing to do with a sales pitch. One couple remembered David and Jennifer spending an entire afternoon driving around Colleyville with them, looking at other homes to help them picture what they wanted for their own. Another longtime client recalled a follow-up inspection that uncovered defective shingles—a big problem that might otherwise have remained hidden. The Martins helped see the issue through to a resolution. These are the ordinary ways a reputation takes shape. Some of the Martins' customer relationships have lasted more than 18 years, others more than 25. For many families, a roofing project may happen only once or twice in a generation. The Martins don’t take for granted being not only remembered, but welcomed back years afterward is a compliment no award can replace. “David takes care of a customer’s home like it’s his own,” Jennifer notes. That care extends beyond customers. As longtime Colleyville residents, the Martins have supported schools, youth sports and community organizations, including a $20,000 contribution toward rebuilding a high school baseball field. Their involvement has also included local beautification initiatives and efforts to protect Eagle Mountain Lake. They believe a business should contribute to the community that helped it grow—not only by doing business there, but by showing up when neighbors need a hand. Along the way, the Martins have earned numerous honors, including recognition from Marquis Who’'s Who and multiple Society Life ‘Tops in Tarrant’ awards. Yet, for a family that has spent 30 years building its reputation, the greatest recognition often comes without a trophy—it’s through a familiar voice on the phone, a returning customer or a neighbor's heartfelt recommendation. —————————————————————————————————

A NEW GENERATION JOINS THE STORY

————————————————————————————————— The family name on the business has always carried meaning. Today, it carries a sense of possibility, too. Their son, Jake Martin, now plays an active role in the company. A University of Arkansas graduate with honors in business, he brings his own experience in leadership and community service while learning from the people who know the company best. For David and Jennifer, seeing Jake become part of the business adds another dimension to the anniversary. What once demanded so much time, sacrifice and persistence is now really

SL COVER STORY EXPERT ADVICE

something the family can share. Jake brings fresh ideas grounded in familiar values, while David has the opportunity to pass along what can’t be learned in a classroom—the wisdom gained from three decades of experience. It’s an opportunity to share not only the business he created, but also the principles that made it possible. Showing up, keeping your word, treating people fairly and taking pride in your work are lessons meant to outlast any single generation. Jennifer’s influence is equally important to that legacy. Together, they have helped create a family business where personal character matters as much as professional accomplishment, and where the next chapter can honor the past while embracing the future. —————————————————————————————————————

WHAT 30 YEARS REALLY MEANS —————————————————————————————————————

Anniversaries invite people to count milestones—years in business, projects completed, honors received. The Martins have plenty to celebrate. But what matters most can’t be reduced to a number. It’s found in the customer who calls again after nearly two decades. In the employee who stays year after year. In the difficult lesson that ultimately makes the next project better. And in the community that has supported the business through changing seasons—and the family that has grown along with it. “We build relationships one roof at a time” has long been the company's motto. Thirty years later, those words have become far more than a promise. They tell the story of a family business shaped by every homeowner who placed their trust in the Martins, every employee and crew member who helped them grow and a community that has supported them through the years. For David, Jennifer and Jake, this milestone is also an opportunity to say thank you. To the homeowners who welcomed them into their lives, the families who shared their name with their neighbors and friends, and their dedicated crews, suppliers and professionals who contributed along the way—each has played a part in the company’s remarkable journey. There will undoubtedly be more Texas storms to weather, challenges to overcome and milestones to celebrate. But as Jake helps carry the Martin name into its next chapter, the values that guided David from the very beginning will remain the family’s strongest foundation. Roofs may be what they build, but their greatest accomplishment lies in the lives they’ve touched, the trust they have earned and the example they're leaving for the next generation. Thirty years is an extraordinary milestone. But building a name that means something to the people who know it— and a legacy worthy of passing on—that’s what makes these three decades truly worth celebrating. And one that will continue long after the next roof is raised.

BUILT TO LAST ——————————————————

Thirty years in business is a milestone worth celebrating. Thirty years of earning trust is something even greater. For the Martin family, the anniversary isn’t simply a celebration of roofs replaced, storms weathered or awards collected. It’s a celebration of local homeowners who became friends, neighbors who became their customers, employees who became family and community that believes in what they do. It’s also a reminder that the strongest foundations aren’t always made of concrete—and the best protection doesn’t come from shingles alone. Sometimes, it comes from knowing there’s someone who will answer the phone, tell you the truth and stand behind a promise. As their son Jake helps carry the family legacy into a new generation, the Martins’ commitment remains firmly rooted in the values that brought them this far. They’ve spent three decades protecting the homes of North Texas families. In return, those families have helped them to build something just as enduring—a 30 year benchmark worth celebrating. ——————————————————

30 YEARS. ONE TRUSTED NAME.

And a legacy that’s still raising the standard—one roof at a time.

They want people to know they have a constant support system. They are always here to make sure they’re taken care of and to be their healthcare advocates.

THE LINK BETWEEN YOU & YOUR INSURANCE The Benefit Link provides the objective guidance that you need to make an educated decision about Medicare and insurance decisions. We help individuals find coverage that supports their healthcare needs while protecting their finances from unexpected medical expenses. Our expertise includes Medicare Supplement (Medigap), plus ACA coverage for those under 65, life insurance, annuities, long- and short-term care, as well as cancer, dental, vision and hearing coverage. Q: How much does your service cost? Consultations are always free, and we are available Monday through Friday to serve clients in all 50 states. Q: Are you connected to any specific insurance agency? No. Because we are now, and always have been, independent representatives and not captive employees of any particular carrier, we can analyze and compare plans along with providing you access to many different carriers. We have access to virtually every major insurance company and their plans. We’re dedicated to knowing everything we can by tracking premiums, rate increase history, and trends across all companies so you are able to make an educated decision about your healthcare. We take pride in the hundreds of testimonies on the service we provide throughout the United States—and our services are always totally free of charge. Q: Why should you choose The Benefit Link? What truly sets The Benefit Link apart is the heart behind our work. We believe healthcare coverage is about more than policies and premiums—it’s protecting people and providing peace of mind during some of life’s most important moments. Just as important, our approach is rooted in faith and integrity. We take time to listen and to understand each person’s circumstances rather than treating insurance as one-size-fits-all. Helping people navigate healthcare coverage isn’t just what we do— it’s who we are.

regardless of the carrier, this makes the premiums, rate stability, financial strength and service important considerations. Whether you are brand new to Medicare, reviewing your current plan or exploring additional coverage, we will help you carefully compare your options and also explain differences. And our relationship doesn’t end after enrollment. The Benefit Link remains available year-round to answer questions, help with changes and assist with future insurance needs. Q: When should someone start thinking about Medicare? Ideally, one should start thinking about Medicare before you need to enroll. Medicare has specific eligibility and enrollment periods, and waiting until the last minute can make the process feel much more overwhelming. We encourage clients to reach out as they begin approaching Medicare eligibility so we can explain the different parts of Medicare, review the supplement options and help them understand important enrollment dates. Our goal is to make sure you feel prepared and confident before it is time to make any decisions—not rushed into them.

Q: How have you taken standardized Medicare and made it personal? This is a very personal experience, but it doesn’t feel like insurance companies understand that. Although Medicare is standardized, there are different plans, supplements and options you might not know about or are overwhelmed by. We understand your needs and provide information required to make the best choice for yourself.

Q: What happens if my insurance needs change? That’s exactly why we believe in building long-term relationships. Your healthcare needs, budget and available insurance options can change over time. We remain available year-round to answer questions, help you understand changes to your coverage and review your options when needed. Whether you have questions about Medicare, your prescription coverage, dental, vision, hearing, life insurance or other coverage needs, you can continue to rely on The Benefit Link as your personal insurance advocate.

Q: What you can expect? Medicare and insurance decisions can often feel quite overwhelming, especially when you’re faced with numerous options. We simplify the process by providing clear, objective guidance and helping you understand choices. There is never a cost to you for our services. Because all of the Medicare Supplement plans are federally standardized, the coverage is generally the same

Q: What makes you different? Healthcare is not one-size-fits-all. We pray for all of our clients and stand beside them throughout the process. Our promise to our clients is simple—you will always have someone in your corner who will advocate for your best interests and treat you with compassion and respect. That’s exactly how The Benefit Link makes a difference— one client, one family, one life at a time.

SL expert advice Q&A

with DR. STEVEN BRANBERG, PROSTHODONTIST

Dr. Steven Branberg founded The DFW Dental Implant Center in 2017 with a vision to create a practice where patients feel valued, receive individualized attention and can trust one experienced team to guide them through every step of their smile transformation— with all services conveniently located under one roof.

THE DFW DENTAL IMPLANT CENTER

The DFW Dental Implant Center offers comprehensive implant, cosmetic and general dentistry, from single-tooth replacements to complete smile restorations. The dental practice is dedicated to helping their patients regain the comfort, function and confidence of a beautiful smile.

Q: What inspired you to create The DFW Dental Implant Center? After working as an associate dentist for six years, I founded The DFW Dental Implant Center in 2017 because I believed there was a better way to provide high-quality dentistry at reasonable prices in a comfortable, personalized setting. My goal was to create a dental home where patients could receive everything from routine care to complex implant treatment without being sent from office to office. As a Prosthodontist, restoring and replacing teeth is a major part of my training, and I wanted to combine that expertise with the convenience and personal attention of a truly local practice. Q: What makes your approach to dental implants different? One of the biggest differences is that I can complete the entire dental implant process here in our Colleyville office—from surgical placement through the final restoration. Our patients appreciate not having to coordinate treatment between multiple providers. We also use advanced technology, including the 3D cone-beam imaging to evaluate the teeth, jawbone and surrounding structures and plan treatment around each patient’s anatomy. Every case is different, so I spend time explaining options, answering questions and making sure patients understand why I’m recommending a specific approach before we move forward. Q: What exactly is a dental implant and who might benefit from one? A dental implant is a small titanium post that functions much like an artificial tooth root. It can support a single crown, a bridge, an implant denture or a full-arch restoration depending on how many teeth need to be replaced. Implants can be an option for someone missing one tooth, several teeth or even an

entire arch. The best way to know whether implants are right for you is through an examination and imaging, because we need to consider factors such as bone support, oral health, medical history and your individual goals. Q: What options do you offer for patients who are missing most or all of their teeth? We have several options because there is no single solution that is right for everyone. Some patients may benefit from an implant-retained denture that snaps into place for greater stability, while others may prefer the All-on-4 treatment concept or another full-arch fixed implant bridge that stays in the mouth. We also offer traditional dentures when that is the better choice. During the consultation, we will discuss function, appearance, bone structure, lifestyle and budget so our patients can understand their choices and determine what makes the most sense for them.

questions along the way. Knowing what to expect and feeling like you are being heard can make a tremendous difference in the dental experience. Q: What should a new patient expect at their first visit? The first visit is really about listening and gathering information. I want to understand what is bothering you, any previous dental experiences you have had and what you would ultimately like to change about your smile. We review your medical and dental history, take the appropriate X-rays or scans and perform a thorough examination. Then I walk you through what I see and explain treatment options that may fit your needs. I believe patients should understand their choices, including the associated fees, before deciding how they want to move forward.

Q: How does having an in-house dental lab benefit your patients? Our in-house dental lab is something I’m especially proud of because it gives us more control over the details of a restoration. We have a certified dental technician on-site, allowing us to closely customize traditional dentures, implant dentures and full-arch restorations for fit, function and appearance. It also makes many adjustments and repairs more convenient because we are not always shipping work back and forth to an outside laboratory. For patients, that creates a more streamlined experience and allows us to pay close attention to the details of their new smile transformation.

Q: What would you say to someone who has been living with missing or failing teeth for years and is nervous about taking that first step? I’d tell them that the first appointment is simply a conversation. You do not need to know what treatment you need before you come in, and you should never feel embarrassed about where you are starting. We see patients with all kinds of dental situations, and our job is to help you understand what is possible. Replacing missing or failing teeth can affect much more than appearance—it can change how comfortably and confidently you eat, speak and smile. We offer free implant consultations and second opinions, so if you have been wondering about your options, come in, ask questions and let us help you find a plan that feels right for you.

Q: Many people put off dental work because they are anxious. How do you help? Dental anxiety is very real, and we never want fear or embarrassment to keep someone from getting the care they need. We work hard to create a calm, relaxed environment and offer sedation options for patients who need additional help feeling comfortable. Depending on the treatment and level of anxiety, some options can include nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation. We also take time to explain what is happening and answer

Q: What is the best way to get started? The best way to see what your options are is to schedule a consultation. It gives us a chance to learn more about your concerns, evaluate your smile, answer your questions and walk you through the options that may be the best fit for your needs, goals and budget. There is no pressure—it’s just an opportunity to understand what’s possible and feel confident about your next step. For many patients, that conversation is the beginning of getting back the comfort, function and confidence that’s been missing.

OCTOBER 2026

SocietyLifeMag.com

Q: Is this a good time to invest in the markets? The year 2026 marks the 100-year anniversary of tracking data in the investment markets, including U.S. stocks. During that period, there was almost no individual year when there was not a major national or even international event that would have kept the average person from investing in the markets. Yet over these same 100 years the U.S. stock market (S&P 500) has averaged over a 10% annual return. We certainly cannot predict the future, or whether any individual year will achieve those same results, but the lesson to be learned is that if you are waiting for “the

coast to be clear” of volatile world events before investing you would likely be waiting a long time. If a person still has concerns about investing new dollars during periods of uncertainty, one strategy to consider is dollar cost averaging your dollars into the market. This technique involves choosing a period of time, such as a 12-month period, to ratably “tip toe” into the investment markets by investing a little bit each month. This can help reduce the impact of a market downturn shortly after your initial investment and may even improve long-term returns by allowing you to purchase additional investments during lower-priced months. Overall, in our view, the key to investing is to do so in a diversified manner, across a mixture of asset classes in a ratio that matches your own goals and risk tolerance. Q: I feel like I am behind on retirement saving. What should I do? It is not uncommon for many people to feel behind on saving for retirement. Early in our adult lives saving for retirement is often not a priority, especially with other competing goals such as student loans, starting a family or saving for a first home. Additionally, some people also struggle with balancing their spending, sometimes spending years fighting their way out of student loan or credit card debt. Inflation can also exaggerate this issue. The first step to address this is to get a handle on where the dollars are going each month. There are many great apps to help with this process. The goal is to find out if there are dollars going to any spending categories that don’t or no longer meet your spending priorities. The result of this process should be to identify extra dollars that can be redirected to savings each month. Usually the best place to save for retirement is in an employer-sponsored retirement plan such as a 401k. There are many reasons for this including immediate tax benefits that can be achieved by employee before-tax contributions, the inclusion of an employer match, ongoing tax-deferred compounding, and even the simplicity of automatic payroll deductions. In summary, if you need to catch up on retirement savings, a 401k and even an IRA are often your best places to start.

Q: Are there strategies to reduce my income tax burden? We all know that taxes are part of allowing public services to be available in a democratic society. But there is nothing that says you cannot strive to pay the legal minimum of income taxes. The key to doing so is to understand which areas of tax strategies apply to your financial life and being proactive about your financial decisions. A review of your prior year income tax return is a great place to start this process. For W-2 employees your best bet to reduce taxable income usually comes with the annual benefits enrollment season that will happen soon for many employees. Electing to pay for benefits such as flex spending dollars for dependent care and healthcare on a before-tax basis can add up to big savings. Similarly, electing to contribute to your employer’s 401k plan on a before-tax basis can be a win-win in terms of helping reduce current income taxes and make progress toward your retirement goals. While Congress seems to have reduced the opportunities for income tax deductions for individuals over the past decade or so, there are still ways to help maximize the tax benefits of some expenses in your financial life. Homeowners may still be able to deduct a good portion of their mortgage interest and property taxes. Those who are charitably inclined can help those in need and also enjoy a reduction of income taxes for their donations. And proactive management of your investments could yield the opportunity to harvest any portfolio losses to offset portfolio gains. Even retirees have opportunities for tax savings. Ideas in this area include the consideration of delaying Social Security to minimize taxable income a little longer, using required minimum distributions to make direct donations to charities, and the thoughtful “deconstruction” of a retirement portfolio to include which accounts to take distributions from in what order and in what years. These are all topics that a seasoned Certified Financial PlannerTM can assist with, especially if they are a Fee-Based CFP® that has the objectivity of being a Fiduciary which calls for always putting the client’s interests before their own.

Q: Your practice has been part of Southlake for more than four decades—what does that history mean to you? It means a great deal to our team that we have cared for patients in the same Southlake location for more than 40 years. We have treated many generations of families, along with patients who travel from across Texas and around the country. Our restorative studio was designed around the way I believe dentistry should be practiced—with spacious treatment rooms, panoramic windows, advanced technology and a calm environment. But what matters most is the team inside those walls. Together, our goal is simple—to be a blessing to every person who walks through our doors. Q: What makes your approach to dentistry different? We are very relationship-driven. I never want a patient to feel like a number. We spend time getting to know each person and understanding their concerns and goals. Then we look at the entire mouth as a system rather than simply fixing one tooth at a time. Bite, function, gum health, existing dental work, aesthetics and long-term stability all matter. That allows us to create treatment plans around the individual rather than insurance limitations or one-size-fits-all solutions. Q: Restorative dentistry is a major focus of your practice—what types of patients do you commonly see? Many patients come to us after years of dealing with worn teeth, failing dentistry, missing teeth, bite problems or discomfort. Some have had multiple procedures but still feel the underlying problem was never addressed. My job is to determine why the dentistry is failing before we begin rebuilding. Treatment may involve full-mouth rehabilitation, crown and bridge dentistry,

implant restorative care, bite reconstruction or cosmetic treatment. Our main goal is to restore comfort, function, health and confidence in a way designed to last. Q: What does creating a beautiful smile really involve? A truly beautiful smile has to be more than just white teeth. It should complement the patient’s face, look natural, function properly and feel comfortable. We consider tooth shape, proportion, color, bite and how the smile works within the facial structure. Just as importantly, the foundation beneath the cosmetic work must be healthy. Our team first makes sure we have healthy gums, stable teeth and a sound foundation. From there, we can create restorations that blend artistry with precise clinical dentistry. Q: Why is preventive care so important? Prevention is one of the most important things we do. Beautiful restorative dentistry still depends on healthy gums, supporting structures and excellent maintenance. Our hygiene team plays a major role in helping patients protect both their natural teeth and the dentistry they have invested in. Regular cleanings allow us to monitor gum health, look for early signs of problems and address issues before they become more serious. Our goal is always to help patients protect their own natural teeth, as well as preserve their restorations for a lifetime. Q: How does your team contribute to the overall patient experience? Everything we accomplish is a team effort. I may be the dentist creating the treatment plan, but exceptional care depends on every person our patients encounter. Our hygienists, assistants, treatment coordinators and the administrative team all share the same commitment to excellence and personal service. They know our patients, listen to them and genuinely care about how they are doing. Many patients tell us the office feels more like family than a dental practice. Technical skill matters tremendously, but kindness, consistency and trust are just as important. Q: What do you tell patients who are embarrassed by their smile or are afraid dental treatment will hurt? I would tell

them there is no reason to feel embarrassed and that the first step is simply to come in and have a conversation with us. We see patients at every stage of dental health, and our job is to help—not judge. You do not have to know what treatment you need or commit to anything before understanding your options. We can evaluate where you are, listen to your concerns and create a plan that feels manageable. For patients who are anxious, safe oral sedation can make treatment much more comfortable and often allow us to accomplish more in fewer appointments. Once patients realize there are solutions, that first step often becomes the beginning of getting their comfort, confidence and smile back. Q: Why have you chosen to remain a feefor-service practice rather than allowing insurance to dictate treatment? I believe patients should have the final say in the level of care that they choose. Insurance companies have guidelines and limitations, but those should not determine what is clinically best for an individual patient. By remaining fee-for-service, we can make recommendations based on health, longevity, function and the patient’s goals rather than what a plan will or will not cover. We help patients understand their options and offer financing solutions for larger restorative and cosmetic cases. Ultimately, the patient’s best interest should guide every decision. Q: Why is the connection between oral health and overall health so important? The mouth is part of the body, so I believe dentistry should always be approached with overall health in mind. Periodontal disease, chronic inflammation and infection in the mouth can have implications beyond the teeth themselves. That is why our team emphasizes healthy gums and controlling infection as well as using high-quality, biocompatible materials whenever we restore teeth. We also consider issues such as their sleep, airway, TMJ function and a patient’s broader health history when appropriate. Beautiful dentistry should also be healthy dentistry. When we improve the health of the mouth, we have the opportunity to positively influence far more than a smile— we are able to help support a healthier life.

SL expert advice Q&A

with DR. DANA JUDD, HEAD OF SCHOOL ED.D IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

INSPIRE ACADEMY

Founded by Dr. Dana Judd, Inspire Academy gives students who learn differently a place where they can feel understood, supported and confident in their abilities. Inspired by her children’s experiences with ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia and anxiety, Dr. Judd built the school around the belief that every child deserves an education designed to meet them where they are.

A SAFE PLACE TO LEARN Inspire Academy provides a Christ-centered, individualized learning environment for students in elementary through high school. Through small class sizes, multisensory instruction and a whole-child approach, the academy helps students grow academically, spiritually and emotionally while building the confidence and independence they need for the future.

[ ] HEAD OF SCHOOL DR. DANA JUDD with BRYNLEE 8-year-old Double Doodle

Q: Inspire Academy grew out of your own personal experience—what inspired you to create the school? Inspire Academy really began with my own children. All four struggled with learning differences, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD and anxiety. I knew how intelligent and capable they each were, but I also watched them struggle in traditional classrooms that were not always designed for the way they learned. As a mother, I wanted to understand what they needed, so I pursued advanced education and specialized training in special education, psychology, educational leadership and multisensory instruction. What began as a desire to help my own children became a calling to create a school where children who learn differently could be understood, supported and challenged. Q: You describe Inspire Academy as “a safe place to learn.” What does that mean to you? Many students come to us after years of frustration, anxiety or feeling as though they simply are not good at school. Before students can take academic risks, they have to feel safe making mistakes and asking for help. For me, a safe place to learn means students feel supported— academically, emotionally and spiritually. We want them to understand that learning differently does not mean that they are less intelligent or less capable. When anxiety decreases, confidence can return, and they begin trying things they once avoided. Q: How is Inspire Academy’s teaching approach different? We understand that children do not all process information the same way, so we use multisensory and differentiated instruction. Students may see, hear, say, write, touch or physically work

through the information instead of only listening to a lecture. Our intentionally small classrooms allow teachers to know each student and adjust instruction to match individual learning needs. Sometimes the answer is not simply asking a child to try harder—sometimes we need to change how we teach the child. Q: How important are your teachers to the success of the school? They are all incredibly important! Having a heart for children matters, but educators also need the training and tools to work effectively with students who learn differently. Our teachers bring experience in areas such as learning disabilities, language therapy, special education and differentiated instruction. They are not only instructors, but also mentors and advocates who help students recognize strengths they may have stopped seeing in themselves. Q: Faith is also a major part of Inspire Academy. How does that shape the school experience? Inspire Academy was founded on Christian principles, and our faith shapes how we see every child. Psalm 139 tells us that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made,” and that belief is foundational to our school. A learning difference does not make a child less valuable, intelligent or capable. Our days begin with prayer, biblical principles are woven throughout the school experience and we encourage students to grow academically while also developing their character, faith and purpose. Q: What does the academic experience look like from elementary through high school? We want our students to have a complete educational experience, not simply remediation. Students study core subjects such as math, science, English, social studies and Bible while they also participate in hands-on learning as well as electives. As students move into high school, we place greater emphasis on independence and preparation for life after graduation. Students can even pursue dual-credit opportunities through Dallas Baptist University and Tarrant County College, and we help students

who need accommodations learn how to advocate for themselves. Q: Is college the goal for every Inspire Academy student? College can be a wonderful path, but it is not the only path to success. Our goal is to help students discover their strengths, hone in on their interests and God-given abilities and help prepare for the direction that fits them. That may mean a four-year university, community college, vocational training, entrepreneurship or another calling. We want graduates who can think critically, communicate, solve problems and then confidently move forward. Q: Even dogs on campus have become an important part of Inspire—what role do Brynlee, Kenzie and Nimbus play? They bring so much joy to our campus. For students who are anxious, overwhelmed or having a difficult day, just spending a few moments with one of the dogs can help them calm down and reset. Their presence reflects our whole-child philosophy. Academics matter, but their emotional well-being matters, too. Sometimes the support a student needs before returning to a difficult assignment happens to have four legs and a wagging tail. Q: What’s the most meaningful part of watching Inspire Academy grow? The success stories mean the most to me. I think about parents who tell us their child no longer wakes up dreading school and students who arrive believing they are not smart, then begin realizing how capable they really are. We celebrate academic progress, but sometimes the greatest victory is hearing a student say, “I can do this.” That is why Inspire Academy exists. I wanted to create a place where children who learn differently could truly belong, discover their strengths and reach their God-given potential. Q: How do I find out if Inspire Academy is right for my child? Come visit us! We’d love to meet your family, learn more about your child and answer all of your questions so you can get a feel for whether Inspire Academy is the right fit.

Q: How should one prepare for a divorce proceeding? Divorce is a tough process— emotionally and financially. The ending of a marriage is often likened to the death of a close family member or friend. When it comes to preparing financially and otherwise, every estate is different depending on the assets and circumstances involved. Talk to a divorce lawyer early who can connect you with other professionals, such as forensic accountants, tax attorneys or probate attorneys, if needed. A financial advisor with experience in divorce matters can provide you valuable guidance— particularly for those who may be less familiar with managing complex financial issues.

*Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. *+Board Certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

Q: What should I look for in an attorney when looking for representation that I can count on throughout this process? Their reputation as an excellent litigator (which often ultimately leads to a timely and better settlement), and if your case is larger or more complex, look for resources (larger firm size and available staff and attorneys). Q: What is the most important advice you can give to clients in regards to any children involved in this process? This is always a touchy question—the answer to which depends on the age of the child. Just like the client, their children may also need counseling to help guide them through the process. Educational providers should also be made aware, so they can handle any situations with the appropriate attention. In a perfect world, the child's life would not be greatly affected, and they would not really be aware of what was happening—but the world is far from perfect. While very young children may not need every detail, older children will likely need some explanation. A mental health professional can help guide you on the best way to answer questions in both an age-appropriate and reassuring manner. It is also important to understand parental alienation and recognize potential warning signs. Q: What other types of services could you recommend to someone who does not want to go through a long drawn out divorce process? The only way to dissolve a marriage is through divorce. Within the divorce are processes of alternative dispute resolution (alternatives to litigation), such as mediation, as well the collaborative process, but these do not necessarily shorten the process itself any more than litigation. Whatever process you choose, the key is to have an understanding of your marital estate and to be reasonable in its division. Further if you have children, you need to have an understanding of conservatorship, possession and support as set forth in Texas statutory presumptions. Q: What would you advise for couples going through a divorce who are also in business together? This specific situation is extremely difficult, but not unheard of for

a couple to continue running a business together while they are going through a divorce. Usually, during the divorce, the court will allow one of the spouses to run the business if that is what was normally done, but the other spouse to remain in the loop as far as transparency and big decisions. The business will need to be valued for purposes of divorce (which is often quite different than valuing it for other purposes). Experts (like forensic CPAs) may need to be retained if the parties are not able to agree on a value. Ultimately, the parties will need to agree on a value, or the Court will make that determination, so that the spouse not awarded the business is properly compensated. Alternatively, the Court may order the sale of the business. Q: What should couples consider when creating a prenuptial or a postmarital agreement? Every couple and estate is different, so these agreements should be tailored to their specific circumstances. At their core, they are meant to provide clarity and peace of mind by discussing important financial matters in advance. If a divorce becomes necessary, having those decisions already addressed can reduce uncertainty, stress and conflict for everyone involved. Q: What services do you offer? With more than 30 attorneys, four decades of family law experience, and four offices across North Texas, KoonsFuller is one of the Southwest’s largest family law firms. We provide strategic counsel, experienced guidance, and strong advocacy to help individuals and families navigate life’s most challenging transitions. SL expert advice Q&A

with OWNER/FOUNDERS HAVEN & POLLY BRADY

POLLY

Founded by husband-and-wife team Haven and Polly Brady, Polly Plumbing, Heating & Air was built by two people who were the customers first. Five home renovations taught them what homeowners put up with. More than 1,500 customers and 250+ five-star Google reviews later, the neighbors agree.

PLUMBING, HEATING & AIR Based in Keller and serving Tarrant and South Denton Counties, Polly handles it all, from everyday repairs to large plumbing & HVAC needs like whole-home repipes. Every job gets a Master Plumber or Master HVAC expert, exact pricing before work starts, and a home left cleaner than they found it. Woman-founded and voted Tops in Tarrant by readers like you. For people who expect more.

Q: My Why? Hey neighbors, I’m Polly: mom, wife, and CEO of Polly Plumbing, Heating & Air here in Keller. Haven and I spent our careers in corporate marketing, operations and technology, and our weekends renovating—five fixer-uppers, 15 kitchens and baths, no contractor, no designer. I managed every crew that came and went, and I felt what many of you have: frustration, disappointment, and sometimes flat-out disrespect. Then one day it went too far. I paid a plumber $150 to run a water line to my new steam dryer. He showed up late, made a mess, and cut a giant hole in my wall. When I asked, “Who's fixing this?” he said, “Not my job, lady.” That was the moment I decided we could do better. So Haven and I wrote down every frustration and designed a fix for each one. Polly Plumbing is that list, solved. We built it for the woman homeowner, so she gets things explained without jargon and is treated like the respected leader of her home. It turns out everyone appreciates that. This summer, by request, we added heating and air. If that sounds like the company you’ve been hoping for, I hope you’ll give us a call. Q: Why the Parrot? That’s Polly, our loyal and long-living mascot. A parrot repeats what it hears. We repeat back to you exactly what we found, exactly what will be done, and exactly what it will cost, before any work starts. No surprises. You will always know what Polly is going to say. Polly comes to our community events and poses for photos with anyone, any age. Follow us @pollyplumbing_ to see where we will be next.

Q: What is The Polly Promise? Most companies work the same way. You call, you wait, someone arrives in an unmarked truck, hands you a number you didn’t expect, provides no invoice or receipt, and leaves before you understand what was done. Our promise is proof at every step. Call any hour and a real person answers. You get a two-hour arrival window, then a text with your master tradesman name, photo and live location. We diagnose the root cause and in simple terms explain how it can be resolved for good while others treat symptoms that will reoccur. Before work starts, you see three options with exact prices, and the number you approve is the number on the invoice. Afterward, you get photos and a written summary. If something isn’t right, we come back and make it right. Q: I’m hosting for the holidays. What should I check before the house fills up? As a mom, I know a full house leaves no room for surprises. We’re local, so we know what North Texas homes go through—hard water, aging pipes and shifting clay soil. Here are four things I’d look at this week. First, the date on your water heater. Past ten years, it’s on borrowed time. Second, that slow drain you’ve been meaning to deal with. Plumbers call the day after Thanksgiving “Brown Friday” for a reason. Third, weak water pressure. It isn’t just a quirk of the house. Fourth, your heating and air. Around here, you can need the heat at breakfast and the AC once the oven and the relatives warm things up. If you’d like a second set of eyes, our Whole Home Audit looks over your plumbing and HVAC systems. Then you can get back to what matters—the people around your table. Q: Can I get a price over the phone? Not an honest one. A price given without seeing the problem is a guess, and guesses grow. Nearly a third of our jobs come from new customers paying a second time. The first company was the cheap option that cut corners, or sent a junior tech or a handyman. I hate that for them. So we diagnose in person. When

another company’s quote doesn’t feel right, bring it to us for a free second opinion. On large jobs like a whole-home repipe, we often come in lower. Done right the first time is the best price you’ll find. Q: Who is actually coming to my house? A master of the trade, every time. For plumbing, that’s a Master Plumber, the highest plumbing license in Texas. Most service calls don’t require one. Ours do, so the expert who finds the root cause is the one who fixes it. For heating and air, it’s a Master HVAC Technician. We hire about one in 100 applicants, and my test: would I trust this person in my own home, with my family? Some companies pay their technicians on commission alone. We pay ours very well, so nobody in your home feels like they are getting a salesman. Q: Is a PollyCare Membership worth it? If you own your home, yes. For $99 a year, your plumbing, heating and air are looked after—priority scheduling, 10% off every service, an annual water heater flush, a whole-home water audit, and discounted maintenance. Your workmanship warranty also goes from one year to three. Rather than squeezing another commitment into an already overflowing schedule, consider this an invitation to clear your morning and make yourself the priority. The three-hour celebration offers just the right mix of socializing, shopping, lunch and inspiration without taking up the entire day. Come ready to meet remarkable women, discover new businesses, enjoy an uplifting message and leave with a renewed sense of possibility. Whether attending with friends, colleagues or on your own, WOW is the perfect midweek opportunity to trade the usual routine for something memorable. ———————————————————————————————————————— WHY: The women who inspire us are often the very last ones to stop and acknowledge everything they accomplish. They build businesses, support families, mentor others, serve on boards, volunteer their time and continually show up for the people and communities around them. Women of Worth was created to turn that recognition back toward them. At its heart, WOW is about more than professional success. It’s about reminding women that their contributions matter, their stories deserve to be heard and their accomplishments are worth celebrating. This year’s message feels particularly meaningful. Dr. Moon’s perspective on choosing joy over perfectionism encourages women to release impossible expectations and recognize the value in simply being themselves. For some, the morning may spark a new friendship or professional connection. For others, it may provide the encouragement needed to pursue a new goal, embrace change or simply take a well-earned moment for themselves. Whatever brings guests through the doors, the hope is that every woman leaves feeling recognized, appreciated and inspired. ———————————————————————————————————————— HOW: Joining the celebration is easy, with several ticket options designed for individuals, friends and businesses. Individual tickets are $125, while the Bestie Bundle offers two tickets for $200—perfect for bringing along a friend, colleague or mentor who deserves a little recognition of her own. SL greater good Twenty-seven organizations unite to create a stronger, more compassionate future for animals across Texas. A dog waiting behind a shelter door does not understand city limits. A neglected horse cannot tell which organization answers the call. And a local family struggling to care for a beloved pet is not concerned with whose name appears on the building — only that someone is willing to help. Across Texas, countless people answer those calls every day. Now, a new statewide alliance is bringing all their efforts together, proving that compassion becomes an even greater force when those who care choose to work side by side.

Together, we can make a more humane Texas possible. 56

SL greater good When compassion meets collaboration, extraordinary things can happen. That’s the driving force behind the newly formed Texas Animal Welfare Alliance (TAWA), an inspiring initiative launched by the Texas Humane Legislation Network (THLN). Uniting 27 organizations and partners from across the Lone Star State, this powerful coalition brings together animal shelters, rescue groups, veterinary professionals, advocates and policy experts with one shared mission— to give animals a stronger voice, a brighter future and the care and protection they deserve. Together, they are proving that when we unite for the greater good, we can make a life-changing difference for animals across Texas.

STRONGER TOGETHER

In animal welfare, collaboration is more than a feel-good concept. It can mean connecting a community with resources before a family must surrender a pet, helping shelters learn from successful programs elsewhere, or making sure policymakers understand what is really happening on the ground. No single organization can solve every challenge. Together, they bring more experience, more perspectives and a much greater collective voice to the table. “Texas has

Texas Animal Welfare Alliance (TAWA) is a nonprofit coalition with one powerful mission — to create a safer and a more compassionate future for animals across Texas. Created by the Texas Humane Legislation Network, TAWA unites 27 animal welfare organizations, shelters, veterinary professionals and advocates who all believe that working together can achieve far more than working alone. By sharing resources, expertise and innovative solutions, the Alliance strengthens animal protection efforts, addresses critical challenges and inspires meaningful change statewide. While each of these organization maintains its own mission and voice, all share a common commitment to protecting vulnerable animals and supporting those who care for them while ensuring that compassion knows no boundaries. Together, they are turning a shared passion into a powerful force for good.

an extraordinary community of organizations working every day to protect animals and support the people who care for them,” admits Kolby Monnig, the Senior Director of Government Relations for Texas Humane Legislation Network (THLN). “The Texas Animal Welfare Alliance gives us a place to bring that knowledge and experience together. By communicating regularly and working collaboratively, we can reduce duplication, strengthen collective impact and achieve better outcomes for animals across our state.”

COMPASSION MEETS COLLABORATION

The need for that connection is real. Shelters and rescue organizations navigate difficult questions about space, staffing, medical care and helping pets remain in loving homes. Animal welfare challenges do not stop at city limits, and the realities in a metropolitan shelter may look very different from those in a smaller Texas community. Yet the underlying goal still remains the same—keep animals safe, treat them humanely and help them find stability.

ONE STATE ONE SHARED MISSION

Rather than reinventing the wheel, TAWA is creating a place where organizations can share what they have learned. Regular meetings will focus on emerging issues, available resources, legislative developments and opportunities for coordinated action. A strategy that works in one city could inspire a new approach in another. An organization with legal expertise may help clarify policy questions, while veterinary professionals offer insight into animal health and care. The membership reflects the breadth of that mission. North Texas organizations, including Humane Society of North Texas, Dallas Animal Services, Dallas Pets Alive, Operation Kindness and the SPCA of Texas, join partners from Houston, San Antonio, Amarillo and other communities. National organizations such as Best Friends Animal Society, the Animal Legal Defense Fund and Humane World for Animals contribute additional expertise. Together, they represent different roles in animal welfare—from frontline care to education, advocacy and policy. One important issue is the sale of puppies sourced from inhumane breeding operations. These concerns extend beyond animal suffering to affect families who may unknowingly purchase a sick pet. “Texas communities are confronting complex challenges, from shelter capacity to the sale of puppies sourced from cruel puppy mills,” says John Goodwin, Senior Managing Director of Puppy Mills and the Equine Protection for Humane World for Animals, formerly the Humane Society of the

United States. “The Alliance gives us an important opportunity to share expertise, build public understanding and then work together on responsible solutions that protect animals and consumers.”

ONE COMPASSIONATE CAUSE

Bringing together so many organizations does not mean everyone will see every issue the same way. TAWA was designed with that reality in mind. Members retain their own missions, priorities and positions. The Alliance offers a respectful setting to exchange information, strengthen relationships and unite where common ground exists. That distinction matters because meaningful progress rarely requires identical perspectives. It requires a willingness to listen and a commitment to the greater good. “Each participating organization brings a different perspective, area of expertise and connection to communities across Texas,” Monnig explains. “That diversity is one of the Alliance’s greatest strengths. We will not agree on every issue, but we can still learn from one another and find meaningful ways to work together.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE CLOSE TO HOME

For North Texans, the impact feels close to home. Local shelters, veterinarians, rescue volunteers, foster families and adopters are already part of a community that understands the bond between people and animals. A statewide alliance could support their efforts by creating stronger channels of communication and helping successful ideas travel farther. It reminds us that animal welfare is not simply a shelter issue. It is a

community issue, influenced by education, responsible pet ownership, accessible services and thoughtful laws. Behind the Alliance’s meetings and policy discussions are real lives. A family searches for help keeping a beloved pet. A shelter team seeks space for one more animal. A veterinarian helps an animal recover. These moments may seem small against the size of Texas, but they reveal why cooperation matters. THLN has long worked to improve animal welfare through legislation, advocacy and education. Launching TAWA expands opportunities to share knowledge and coordinate around common goals. Its success will not be measured simply by how many groups gather around a table, but by what they accomplish together. Everyone has a place in this story. We can adopt thoughtfully, support reputable shelters and rescues, foster, volunteer and help neighbors find resources when pet care becomes difficult. Lasting change depends on organizations working together, but also grows from everyday choices in our communities. No single solution can resolve every challenge. But there is promise in a state as large as Texas choosing to share knowledge rather than work in isolation. When organizations connect, resources reach farther, ideas grow and shared commitment becomes action. For animals who depend on human kindness, that is more than a hopeful beginning. It is proof that the greatest good often starts when we decide to do good together. —————————————————––— t h l n . o rg / t a w a

POTATO

Galette

RECIPE FROM THEROSETABLE.COM CRAFTED BY KATIE-ROSE WATSON

———————————————————

INGREDIENTS

SL

THE ROSE TABLE

7-8 small or 4-5 large Yukon gold potatoes 3 Tbsp melted butter 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 cup aged cheddar cheese 1/4 cup gruyere cheese Salt and black pepper For serving: French grey sea salt, chives, fresh thyme

................................................................... (1) Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Slice potatoes very thin. Remove excess moisture from potatoes by squeezing slices between paper towels. Toss potatoes with melted butter. ................................................................... (2) Heat 2 Tbsp of olive oil in a cast iron skillet on the stove over medium heat. Start layering potatoes on the cast iron, starting in the center and working your way out. After each layer, add cheese and minced garlic and season with salt and pepper. Make sure the last layer is potato, not cheese. ................................................................... (3) Cover potatoes with parchment paper and add something heavy. Cook on the stove for 5-6 minutes, then remove parchment paper, move cast iron skillet to the oven, and bake for 45-55 minutes. ................................................................... (4) Remove from oven and flip onto a cutting board. Add French grey sea salt and fresh chives and/or thyme. ................................................................... Note: This dish heats up beautifully. Just pop it in the oven loosely wrapped with foil for 10 minutes at 400 degrees. This might be the best leftover potato dish of all time! Enjoy!

Not to be dramatic, but this Potato Galette is quite literally the best thing I’ve ever eaten! When I took my first bite, I heard trumpets. Saxophones. Angels singing. Prep everything first: grate cheese, slice potatoes, mince garlic, heat oven. No mandolin or peeling needed. Layer the potatoes quickly in hot oil, seasoning as you go, then bake until crisp and golden. Flip it and try not to gasp — crispy outside, cheesy and tender inside. Serve with a salad or crème fraîche and smoked salmon for brunch.

SL WhereLocalsGo REVIEW BY JENNIFER SLOAN

HUDSON HOUSE

EAST COAST-INSPIRED AMERICAN, SEAFOOD, SUSHI, RAW BAR & BRUNCH

an upscale but approachable feel. It’s sophisticated enough for any date night or business meeting—yet relaxed enough to become a regular book club lunch destination. Southlake’s Hudson House also features an outdoor patio, making it a welcome addition to Park Village’s popular greenspace.

The local dining scene has a stylish new addition, and it comes with plenty of familiar favorites. Hudson House has officially opened in Southlake’s Park Village, taking over the space that was formerly RA Sushi. While locals will surely recognize the location, they will barely recognize the actual restaurant inside. The former space has been completely transformed, trading its darker moody look for a bright and polished makeover—fresh and perfectly suited for Hudson House’s signature East Coastinspired style. You might also recognize the Hudson House name from their Dallas, Fort Worth, Las Colinas, Addison and Frisco locations. Each one has a unique personality and Southlake joins the fleet with a modern flair that feels very Hamptons after dark.

Fans who frequented RA Sushi will be happy to know that the address remains the destination for when a sushi craving hits. Hudson House has an impressive sushi and raw bar menu with selections including the Sunset Roll, Signature Roll, Golden Roll and Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice. Fresh East Coast oysters and other seafood selections add to the coastal feel and make it easy to curate a meal entirely from the raw bar. But don’t let the sushi menu keep you from venturing into the rest of the offerings. One of the standouts and my not-

Inside, warm leather seating, cozy booths and a large wraparound bar give the restaurant

to-be-missed menu item is the Lobster Roll. Fresh Atlantic lobster is piled high on a buttered New England-style roll, served alongside skinny fries— try them truffled. It’s simple, indulgent and exactly what a Lobster Roll should be—easily one of the top reasons to visit. The menu goes well beyond seafood, too. Hudson House has built a loyal following for “The Cheeseburger,” while dishes like Chicken Parm, Steak Frites, Maple Planked Salmon and signature Hudson Salad make this the kind of restaurant where everyone at the table can find something they love—even the kiddos. Of course, no trip to Hudson House would be complete without a cocktail. The restaurant has become almost as famous for its “World’s Coldest Martinis” menu as it has for its food. Options include the Bleu & Gold, featuring Grey Goose, olive juice, bleu cheese salt and housemade bleu cheese olives; as well as classics like the Lemon Drop and Espresso Martini. If you’re not a martini fan, the Frozen Bellini and

Strawberry Spritz are equally great options along with an extensive wine list. Even better, weekday happy hour runs from 3 to 6 p.m. at the bar, with half-price martinis and wine by the glass, along with specials on oysters and “The Cheeseburger.” With its bright new look and impressive sushi, crave-worthy lobster roll and seriously cold martinis, Hudson House has breathed new life into this familiar Southlake space. Add in a weekend brunch featuring Hamptons French Toast and Lobster Eggs Benedict, and locals have plenty of delicious new reasons to head over to Park Village again and again.
