“WHEN WOMEN SUPPORT EACH OTHER, INCREDIBLE THINGS HAPPEN.”

Welcome to our 19th annual Women in Business issue—a celebration of vision, courage, leadership, and the remarkable women shaping the heartbeat of our local economy. Each year, we’re honored to spotlight an inspiring group of women who are redefining success on their own terms. These women are not only building businesses—they’re building legacies, lifting others as they climb, and leaving an indelible mark on our community. From CEOs and entrepreneurs to creatives and community leaders, the women featured in this issue represent a wide spectrum of industries and backgrounds. What unites them is their tenacity, passion and a shared commitment to excellence. Their journeys remind us that behind every thriving business is a story worth telling— and we are proud to tell those stories here (starting on page 20 of this issue).

Publisher

This special issue is more than just a tribute—it’s an invitation. An invitation to cheer for one another, to support local women-led businesses, and to see possibility in our own reflection. Whether you’re just beginning your career, considering a bold pivot, or simply searching for inspiration, we hope these pages serve as a spark.

We’re also thrilled to present our special quarterly section, Society Kids (page 48). As parents, educators and caregivers know, children are at the very center of our lives and our communities. In this section, we highlight local resources, people and stories designed to inspire and support the journey of parenting and childhood alike. Finally, with summer just around the corner, we’ve compiled a guide to our favorite top-rated summer camps (page 50) and some kid-friendly destinations perfect for family road trips across Texas (flip to page 62).

Summer is the season of play, adventure and exploration. It’s a time when families pack up the car and hit the road, when kids trade backpacks for beach towels, and when we all get a little more time to connect, recharge and reset. Whether you’re planning a long-awaited vacation or looking for enriching ways to keep the kids engaged right here at home, this issue has ideas to help you make the most of it. At Society Life, our mission has always been to celebrate community—its triumphs, its talents, and the people who make it all matter. This issue is a perfect reflection of that mission. We’re proud to celebrate the dynamic women who lead with purpose and power, and we’re excited to share Society Kids as a fresh way to stay connected with the rhythms of family life. As always, thank you for reading and for being part of our story.

They help us understand and apply powerful lessons about the value of resilience, trust and faith. Let’s shine the spotlight on 17 women in the Bible who have contributed to God’s powerful work in the world and the advancement of his kingdom.

Women of the Bible LESSONS

IN FAITH, COURAGE AND PURPOSE

MARY MAGDALENE A faithful follower healed by Jesus, she supported his ministry and was the first witness to his resurrection, playing a key role in the church’s foundation.

EVE Eve is often misunderstood. Though she and Adam introduced sin into the world, she is also the mother of humanity and symbolizes God’s promise to bring forth the one who would defeat evil and redeem mankind.

RACHEL Though she faced deception and infertility, she became the mother of Joseph and Benjamin—key figures in Israel’s story.

HANNAH Her heartfelt prayer for a child led to the birth of Samuel, a prophet who helped turn Israel’s heart back to God.

DEBORAH The only female judge of Israel, Deborah led with wisdom and courage during a time of political and spiritual turmoil.

ESTHER A Jewish queen in Persia, Esther used her influence to save her people, securing their freedom and inspiring generations with her bravery.

MIRIAM Moses’s sister, Miriam helped preserve his life and later led the Israelites in worship after the exodus from Egypt.

SARAH Despite her old age, Sarah gave birth to Isaac, proving that God’s promises are always fulfilled—no matter the odds.

ELIZABETH Too old to conceive, Elizabeth miraculously gave birth to John the Baptist, preparing the way for Jesus and reminding us of God’s perfect timing.

PRISCILLA A prominent leader in the early church, Priscilla taught others and modeled how women can lead faithfully and powerfully in God’s kingdom.

MARY OF BETHANY Commended by Jesus for choosing to sit at his feet, Mary reminds us of the importance of prioritizing spiritual connection over worldly distraction.

MARTHA Though initially rebuked, Martha’s deep love for Jesus shows a heart committed to serving and honoring him.

JEHOSHEBA By saving her nephew Joash from a massacre, she preserved the royal line through which the Messiah would come.

REBEKAH Chosen by God to be Isaac’s wife, Rebekah played a pivotal role in continuing Abraham’s legacy and securing God’s promise to Israel.

LEAH Though unloved by her husband, Leah became the mother of six tribes of Israel and part of the lineage of Jesus—proof of God’s blessing in overlooked places.

While men figure more prominently in the Bible because of historical context, Scripture brings both dignity and equality to women through Scriptures like “So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:27). Women are recognized as equal in value to men in the Bible, as well as also showcased for their strength, courage, compassion and tenacity. The Biblical role of a woman is to live in such a way that glorifies God–to obey teachings of Jesus, to proclaim the Gospel in word and deed, to trust the Lord as our Provider and Protector, and to follow Christ!

In a world filled with shifting standards and pressures, young ladies should remember that their true worth is found in Christ. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, created with a divine purpose and unique gifts that the world needs. Embrace the love and grace that God offers, knowing that you are cherished and valued beyond measure. Let your heart be anchored in faith, and let God’s Word guide your steps.

As you journey through life, remember that you are not alone—the Lord walks beside you, strengthening and uplifting you in every challenge. Now go shine brightly, for you are a reflection of God’s love in this world.

CHARLOTTE AND PENELOPE

and the Neighborhood Stage

Just in time for summer Teresa Argenbright has published the second picture book in her Menagerie Series, Charlotte and Penelope and the Neighborhood Stage. Illustrated by Dan McGeehan, it features a whole cast of furry, feathered and finned creatures on a rollicking, rhyming journey to help their friends. According to Boston Children’s Health Physicians summer reading can have a positive impact on academic achievement. Studies have consistently shown that children who engage in regular reading during the summer break maintain or even enhance their reading skills. They increase their vocabulary as they encounter new words and ideas, which grows their own communication skills.

Regular reading also helps children strengthen their ability to concentrate on a task for an extended period. It stimulates critical thinking and problemsolving abilities Books act as windows into different worlds, cultures, and experiences. This helps children develop empathy and understanding for others and foster their own emotional intelligence. A shared reading routine where parents and children read together or discuss books allows for meaningful conversations and connection. And this picture book for 4-8 year olds is a great place to start. Sisters Charlotte and

Penelope fall ill and aren’t able to play with their menagerie of animal friends. The friends are stumped as to how they can help, but not for long. Soon they are using their talents and creativity to create a surprise that the two girls will love and appreciate. The book even includes a “Playbill” with biographical info on the animals, thank yous to supporters and a list of imaginary business sponsors. The brightly colored illustrations by Dan McGeehan give each character a sparkling and singular personality from a rapping turtle to a drumming octopus. The characters glow with pleasure and satisfaction as they use their talents on a project intended to cheer up the sick little girls.

Here’s some advice from Teresa on how engage your kids with reading: “Teach the kids that you don’t need something moving on a screen to have great experiences. There’s something magical about sitting with an adult and turning the page together. As far as getting them into it, I think just reading aloud to your child, but not just at bedtime. Get them interested in the worlds that a book and other books can take them to. Help them to embody the story and ask them questions to make them part of the story so it’s not just words on a page.”

COMMEMORATIVE FAIR THEME “TEXAS SHINES BRIGHT INSPIRED BY BIG TEX’S LARGER THAN LIFE PERSONA

This year’s State Fair of Texas Commemorative Art turns its focus to the true icon of the Fair—Big Tex himself. Instead of capturing the hustle and bustle of Fair Park, the 2025 artwork focuses on the awe-inspiring experience of standing at Big Tex Circle and looking up at the towering cowboy who has come to symbolize the spirit of Texas. Created by Texas native Silvia Skinner, a designer at The Matchbox Studio in Deep Ellum, the illustration imagines Big Tex, not only as a Fair icon, but as a proud ambassador traveling across the diverse landscapes of Texas—from the plains of West Texas to the woods of the east. With his familiar stance and signature wave, Big Tex is shown reaching for something more—literally. In this imaginative scene, one hand waves while the other reaches into the sky to pluck the symbolic Lone Star, a powerful metaphor for inspiration, leadership and unity. It’s a playful, yet meaningful take on Big Tex’s enduring role in Texas culture. Surrounding him are rich details that nod to all corners of the state, including both rural and urban elements and a special emphasis on DFW, the Fair’s longtime home. These elements ground Big Tex in the heart of Texas while celebrating his wide-reaching legacy. More than a mascot, Big Tex represents the values Texans hold dear. His shining smile and towering stance invite visitors from all walks of life to come together and celebrate everything that makes the State Fair the “Most Texan Place on Earth.” This year’s commemorative art reminds us that no matter where we are in the world, Big Tex is always there— standing tall and encouraging all of us to reach for the stars. FORT WORTH BOTANIC GARDEN PREMIER BAT HABITAT NOCTURNAL NEIGHBORS MADE IT THEIR HANGOUT

It turns out that the Fort Worth Botanic Garden (FWBG) isn’t just a daytime destination for us to wander through its beautiful landscapes—it’s also a five-star hotspot for bats! A recent collaborative study by the Cross Timbers Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists, the North American Bat Monitoring Program, and the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) uncovered that FWBG hosts five different bat species—more than any other surveyed site in Tarrant or Parker Counties. Using acoustic monitoring to capture the bats’ ultrasonic calls, researchers confirmed the presence of the Mexican Free-Tailed Bat, Evening Bat, Tricolored Bat, and sightings of the Eastern Red and Hoary Bats. Particularly noteworthy is the Tricolored Bat, which is being considered for the United States endangered species list due to white-nose syndrome. Beyond their cute faces, bats play a vital ecological role—they devour thousands of insects each night, saving billions for farmers and protecting us from mosquito bites. They also pollinate over 500 plant species—like agave and mango—and act as seed spreaders with their nutrient-rich guano. Fort Worth Botanic Garden’s vast bat diversity underscores the importance of urban green spaces as sanctuaries for wildlife. To support these flying friends at home, plant night-blooming native flowers, reduce outdoor lighting, skip pesticides, provide water sources, or consider installing a bat house. You can learn more about the study and the bats by visiting the Fort Worth Botanic Garden online at: tinyurl.com/FWBGbats

IN BUSINESS WOMEN

In our 19th Annual Women in Business issue, we celebrate the bold, brilliant and resilient women who continue to reshape what our leadership looks like today. From those who struck out on their own following pandemic layoffs, to mothers who refused to choose between flexibility and fulfillment, to women who discovered they had the talent—and the tenacity—to lead teams through uncertainty and into success, these female trailblazers prove success has no single path. They have turned setbacks into springboards, obstacles into lessons, and have made no apologies for doing things on their own terms. Their stories are testaments to what happens whenever women push past their self-doubt, rewrite outdated narratives, and pursue their goals with purpose and power. When women break the barriers in their own minds, they show the world that there are truly no limits.

COVER STORY

In a world buzzing with noise — both literal and metaphorical — peace can feel out of reach, especially for those suffering from tinnitus, hearing loss, or hyperacusis. But Dr. Beki Kellogg, founder of Hope Hearing & Tinnitus Center in Southlake, is changing that narrative for her patients.

Hope Hearing & Tinnitus Center

In this 19th Annual Women in Business issue, we celebrate trailblazers like Kellogg, who turned personal passion into purpose-driven care. She’s created more than just a clinic — it’s a sanctuary where hope is restored — one life-changing visit at a time.

A Beacon of Calm in a Noisy World

For those living with tinnitus, hearing loss, or sound sensitivity, the world can often be an overwhelming place. The constant ringing, the muffled conversations, the mental fatigue—it’s not just inconvenient... it’s isolating. But at Hope Hearing & Tinnitus Center in Southlake, Dr. Beki Kellogg and her dedicated audiology team are changing that reality for their patients with compassion, expertise, and yes—hope.

A Mission Built on Purpose

Founded by Kellogg with a clear vision, Hope Hearing specializes in tinnitus, hearing loss, and hyperacusis (sound sensitivity). “I started Hope to create a space where we could truly pour into our patients,” she explains. “Tinnitus treatment requires patience, empathy and personalized care—something that’s hard to do in a rushed or clinical setting.” Kellogg, a woman of deep faith, calls her business a blessing from God. “Hope is a God thing,” she shares. “It’s one of the greatest gifts in my life.” That faith, along with her love for her patients and her close-knit team, continues to fuel the clinic’s mission to deliver hope and relief.

Compassion Meets Cutting-Edge Care

Unlike many clinics where patients feel like numbers, Hope Hearing provides customized, research-based care from the very first phone call. “We’re here to listen—both literally and figuratively,” Beki admits. “Our patients often think there’s no solution, but that’s where we step in to show them otherwise.” Her clinic’s success comes from more than just audiology knowledge—it comes from the heart. The team’s culture of warmth and support allows them to walk hand-in-hand with each patient, creating individualized treatment plans that actually work. “Caring is what we do all day, every day,” she promises.

Women Who Inspire and Words to Live By

Kellogg draws inspiration from best-selling author and researcher Brené Brown and lives by Brown’s mantra, “Courage over comfort.” She also channels the mindset of the football legend Tom Brady, who said: “To be successful, you don’t have to be special—you just have to be consistent, determined and willing to work for it.” But of course, her greatest source of wisdom comes from the scripture, especially Romans 5:3–5 and Isaiah 40:31. “Faith is what sustains me,” she explains.

Balancing Business, Motherhood, and More

Running a business is hard enough, but Beki is also a mom of three young boys (pictured above).

“Time management is definitely my biggest challenge,” she says laughing. “I love everything

Relief Found, Hope Restored:

I do, but getting the kids to all their practices and games can feel like a full-time job on its own!” She keeps her balance through journaling, coaching, workouts, and travel—and dreams of the perfect day off on a beach somewhere with live music and walkable restaurants. “That’s my happy place,” she confesses.

Growth on the Horizon

Her Southlake location is just the beginning. Hope Hearing already operates a clinic in Iowa, and plans are already underway for a new location in Frisco. Meanwhile, the team in Southlake is growing too—welcoming a new Patient Care Coordinator this May. Exciting milestones are happening across the board— Dr. Mary Allen is expecting her first baby in August, and team member Kelly Anglin has just become a licensed Audiology Assistant.

A Heart for Service

Kellogg’s desire to give back goes far beyond the walls of her clinic. She is actively involved in her church and finds purpose in supporting causes that align with her values. Whether she’s volunteering her time, offering support to those in need, or simply being a steady source of encouragement, Kellogg’s life is a reflection of service in action.

Defining Success by Impact

Her approach to business isn’t just about appointments and audiograms—it’s about creating a ripple effect of kindness and hope.

From mentoring her team and celebrating their milestones to treating each patient like family, she fosters a culture where giving is second nature. For Kellogg, running a clinic is not just a professional endeavor—it’s a calling to serve, to uplift, and make a meaningful difference in individual lives and the broader community. For Beki, success isn’t measured in numbers, but in lives changed. “Every time someone walks in feeling hopeless and leaves with a plan and some relief—that’s what success looks like,” she says. “We want to make a lasting difference, one person at a time.”

Because Hope Should Be Heard

If you or someone you love is living with hearing loss or the relentless hum of tinnitus, take heart—there’s a compassionate, expert-driven clinic where hope is more than a name. At Hope Hearing & Tinnitus Center, founder Dr. Beki Kellogg has built a place where science meets soul, and where patients are seen, heard and deeply cared for. Hearing loss isn’t just a medical issue—it’s a quality-of-life issue, one that can lead to isolation, cognitive decline, and missed moments that matter. That’s why early intervention is so crucial. Through advanced technology and a personalized, research-based approach, patients can stay connected to their families, stay sharp, and stay actively involved. Because at Hope Hearing, it’s never just about treating ears—it’s about listening with purpose to restore hope, joy, clarity, connection, relief, and to help people hear the beauty of life again.

Rooted in Family, Driven by Excellence

A longtime resident with two businesses based in Colleyville, Jennifer Martin is deeply invested in serving her community. Through Jennifer Martin Construction, she has built a premier residential exterior services company trusted by homeowners across DFW. Jennifer launched the company with a clear mission: to raise the standard of service in the industry—and that’s exactly what she’s done. Her company offers a comprehensive range of services, including gutters, downspouts and gutter protection, as well as iron gates and fencing. They also specialize in siding, wood and stucco work. From exterior painting projects to chimney and siding repairs, her experienced crews provide effective solutions for the most common exterior home issues. But it’s not just about what they do—it’s how they do it. Backed by a near-perfect 4.9-star rating and glowing customer reviews, the company is consistently praised for its expert craftsmanship and exceptional support. Jennifer has cultivated a company rooted in excellence, transparency and reliability—values that keep clients returning time and again. While Jennifer Martin Construction offers a full suite of services, it’s especially known for its high-quality repair work. The team is a go-to resource for thorough roof inspections, gutter cleaning, downspout upgrades, and siding repairs. Whether restoring a home after a storm or simply giving a property a fresh new face, Jennifer’s team delivers results that truly speak for themselves.

Power Duo: Partnering with David

While Jennifer Martin Construction thrives under her solo leadership, Jennifer is also the co-owner and heartbeat behind David Martin & Son Roofing, a company she built alongside her husband David. Together, they’ve turned a family-owned business into an award-winning industry leader with a reputation for excellence across North Texas. Jennifer wears many hats in the business—project management, client relations, operations and finance. She’s the one coordinating material shipments, overseeing job sites, securing new contracts, and ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. Her intuitive understanding of roofing issues is so sharp that she can often diagnose problems over the phone before ever stepping foot on a property. With 95% of their clients coming from past client referrals and repeat business, Jennifer and David have proven that trust, consistency and quality customer care will always be a winning formula.

Recognition & Respect

Jennifer Martin’s trailblazing efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. She’s been named one of the Top Women in Business by Marquis Who’s Who Publications, 360 West and Society Life Magazine,

Laying the Foundation:

among others. Under her leadership, David Martin & Son Roofing has racked up numerous accolades: Best Roofing Company in Tarrant County for two consecutive years, Best Roofer in Colleyville for seven years running, and a four-time winner of the Tops in Tarrant award from Society Life Magazine. As a woman leading in construction and roofing, Jennifer’s impact reaches far beyond the job site. She’s a role model for other aspiring entrepreneurs— especially women and immigrants—again demonstrating that it’s possible to thrive in industries where few women are found at the top.

Rooted in Family, Built on Values

Jennifer credits her work ethic and resilience to her upbringing. As a young woman, she worked in her parents’ gas station, convenience store, and commercial property business—all while pursuing her education and working as a dental assistant and office manager. The values her parents instilled in her, particularly the wisdom of her father, continue to guide her as a business leader. David Martin also brings strong moral grounding to the business, having been raised by his grandparents from the age of 12. The couple shares a deep commitment to trust, quality and integrity—values that are embedded into every aspect of their company.

Guardians of the Homefront

At its core, David Martin & Son Roofing is about more than shingles and storm repairs— it’s about protecting homes and the families

who live in them. From lightning damage to wind and hail, their comprehensive roofing solutions are designed with durability and peace-of-mind in mind. Whether clients are planning a major renovation or recovering from storm damage, the Martins ensure every job is handled with care, transparency, and unmatched expertise. Their deep knowledge and personal involvement mean clients never feel like just another number on a job sheet.

A Commitment to Community

Jennifer and David Martin don’t just install roofs—they strengthen their community. Longtime Colleyville residents, they’ve donated the funds needed to rebuild a local baseball field, plus sponsored school sports for over a decade, and consistently support nonprofits, chambers, and youth programs. Unlike storm-chasing contractors, the Martins are a trusted, local presence always ready to give back.

A Legacy in the Making

Jennifer Martin isn’t just succeeding in roofing and construction—she’s redefining what success looks like in these industries. By combining business savvy with compassion, community roots with ambition, she’s proven that strong leadership transcends gender and ethnicity. With her name on one company and her heart in another, Jennifer is doing more than fixing homes and repairing roofs—she’s building a legacy that inspires and empowers others to believe in the power of hard work and purpose.

Rooted in Family, Driven by Excellence

Justice Law Firm specializes in family law, collaborative law and estate planning—offering services that touch the core of people’s lives. From divorce and custody issues to prenuptial agreements, adoption and domestic violence matters, the firm is equipped to handle every chapter of a family’s story with precision and care. But what truly sets her firm apart isn’t just what they do—it’s how they do it. “We provide large-firm quality with small-firm attention,” says the founder, who began the practice with a vision to give clients more than just legal counsel. She wanted to offer them overall peace-of-mind. At Justice Law Firm, clients aren’t just case numbers—they are people navigating deeply personal issues, and they deserve legal support that reflects that.

Meet Attorney Tracey L. Justice

At the helm of Justice Law Firm is its namesake, Tracey L. Justice—a woman whose career jour ney is as diverse as it is inspiring. With a B.A. in Psychology from Baylor University, as well as a Realtor’s license in hand by 1986, Her early path revealed a sharp mind paired with an innate entrepreneurial spirit. She’s worn many hats over the years—from real estate to running a daycare center—each life experience shaping her understanding of people and the challenges they face. But it was the law that ultimately captured her heart. Earning her Juris Doctor from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law in 2001, she went on to become a certified mediator and later gained specialized credentials to mediate highstakes family matters involving children. Now licensed to practice in both Texas and the Federal Court for the Northern District of Texas, Tracey focuses on family law and civil litigation, bringing empathy and strength to every case. Recognized as a “Top Attorney” every year since 2009, she is a respected figure in her field and an active member of numerous organizations. Outside the courtroom, her dedication to service continues—she’s served on boards for the Stepping Stones Foundation, Ohlook Performing Arts Center, and currently lends her time to Spiritual Outreach Worldwide, a nonprofit supporting ministry efforts in Ukraine. A longtime Southlake resident, Tracey has been married for over 35 years, is a proud mother of two, and an active member of The Hills Church since 1998—proving that her passion for community runs just as deep as her passion for justice.

A Personal Approach to Legal Challenges

Justice Law Firm stands out in a crowded field—not only through legal expertise, but by prioritizing client care. “We’re constantly working to distinguish ourselves from the many other law firms in the area,” Tracey notes. “It’s

Grace, Grit and Justice:

A LOOK INSIDE SOUTHLAKE’S JUSTICE LAW FIRM

our compassion, individualized attention, and openness that make the difference.” And, that personal approach extends well beyond the courtroom. Clients praise Justice Law Firm’s transparency and communication—especially during what are often the most stressful seasons of their lives. The firm handles all aspects of family law, including divorce, custody, child support, and guardianship. Their collaborative law services offer an alternative to traditional litigation, helping families to find peaceful resolutions outside of court. They also provide estate planning services, ensuring clients are prepared and protected for the future.

Standing for Justice and Giving Back

Justice Law Firm’s dedication doesn’t stop at the office door. Tracey is a founding board member of the Stepping Stones Foundation of Keller, a nonprofit that supports at-risk and homeless youth. “Helping vulnerable young people find stability and hope is incredibly important to me,” she shares. It’s just one of the ways she lives out her commitment to giving back. Don’t let her petite frame fool you—she’s a force to be reckoned with both in the courtroom and the community. Her impact—in law and in life—is anything but modest. Her presence in both legal circles and local causes leaves a lasting impression—especially with families she’s helped.

Balancing It All—with Purpose

With so much on her plate, how does she balance the demands of legal work with personal life? “I

set clear boundaries,” she says. “Work stays at work. My time with my family, especially my three grandchildren, is sacred.” Her perfect day off? Simple. “Spending time with my family, making memories.” She’s also quick to credit the words that guide her through the highs and lows of life and law: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It’s a scripture she returns to often, especially when the weight of responsibility feels heavy.

Defining Success

For Justice Law Firm, success isn’t measured in case wins or billable hours—it’s seen in fulfilled employees and satisfied clients. It’s in the look of relief on a client’s face when they realize they’re not alone. “We want every client to walk out feeling heard, supported and hopeful,” she admits.

Defining Success

At its core, Justice Law Firm is about more than legal solutions—it’s about serving people with excellence, empathy, and integrity. In an industry often viewed as cold or transactional, they offer something refreshingly human. When life takes an unexpected turn—whether a family matter or planning for your future—there’s a team in Southlake ready to walk beside you with clarity, compassion and confidence. Justice Law Firm isn’t just about legal solutions— it’s about guiding you through life’s pivotal moments with trusted expertise and heartfelt support. That’s what sets them apart... that’s the Justice Law Firm difference.

Boutique Brokerage Built on Experience

René Jensen launched Lonestar Luxury Realty in 2023, inspired by a gap she saw in the luxury real estate space—a need for truly personalized, high-touch service. After years in the industry, she envisioned a brand that reflected her core values—excellence, discretion, authenticity, and care. “I wanted to create a place where clients feel genuinely cared for, and where agents are empowered to thrive,” she explains. Her mission? To deliver a real estate experience that feels as good as it looks—one where their clients don’t just find houses, they find a sense of belonging. Today, Lonestar Luxury Realty provides luxury-level service at every price point—specializing in North Texas residential real estate. René leads not only her brokerage, but also serves as the lead agent for Willow Tree Custom Homes in the highly anticipated Carillon Parc Phase III. These homes offer exceptional design and luxury, and René is thrilled to help clients find their perfect match in this prestigious development.

Texas Grace, Luxury Space

Jensen’s business isn’t just about closing deals— it’s about opening doors to possibility. Her motto, “More than a transaction—it’s about trust, service, kindness, and helping you find your place in the world,” reflects the heart behind her work. She believes that finding a home should be an enjoyable and collaborative journey. Her ideal client is someone who values clear communication, trust and a personalized approach—whether they’re buying for the first time or investing in their dream property.

People First in Every Property

A seamless blend of luxury service, deep market expertise and genuine relationships, René doesn’t just guide clients through listings and paperwork—she curates an experience tailored to their goals and lifestyle. Her attention to detail and fierce advocacy, combined with unwavering integrity have made her a trusted partner in the North Texas market.

The People Behind the Passion

Behind every powerful woman in business is often a strong support system. For René, that comes from her husband of 30 years and their two adult children. “They remind me why creating a sense of home matters,” she admits. “Their love and support fuel my passion for helping others find a place where they can build beautiful lives and lasting memories.” Now an empty nester, René embraces balance and finds joy in both her personal and her professional life. From attending concerts and sporting events with her husband to walking her dogs and continuing real estate education,

Rooted in Real Estate:

WHERE SOUTHERN CHARM MEETS LUXURY

every day is about growth, connection and true purpose. With a wedding and a first grandchild on the way, it’s a season of celebration and renewed perspective she’s embracing with joy!

Invested in More Than Real Estate

Giving back is in her DNA—actively supporting Meals on Wheels, contributing to youth sports teams, and donating to scholarships and school supply drives for local kids in need. Whether through volunteer work or charitable giving, she is dedicated to making a difference. “It’s important to me to use my time and resources to lift others up,” she shares. “That’s what being part of a community is all about.”

Living with Intention, Leading with Heart

A perfect day for René starts with a good workout and ends with quality time—watching the Cowboys or Rangers with her husband, walking the dogs, or attending a live concert. Even when she’s outside of work, she finds ways to stay connected to her passion, constantly learning and seeking new ways to grow. Her favorite guiding scripture, Proverbs 16:3—“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans”—grounds her in faith and reminds her that hard work aligned with purpose always pays off. These words she holds close to heart.

The Lonestar Way

René credits much of her strength and inspiration to the women around her. Her close-knit group of girlfriends motivate her with their hustle,

heart and authenticity. And when challenges arise—like the weight of running a business solo—she relies on resilience, perspective and the best advice she’s ever received: “You’re not a tree. If something isn’t working, you can move.” This blend of wisdom, flexibility and grit shapes her leadership style and allows her to remain aligned with her vision—even when the road gets tough. For René, success is truly defined by the quality of the relationships that she builds and the trust that she earns—not just the number of homes that she sells.

Luxury Living, Heartfelt Hospitality

René Jensen is more than a brokerage owner— she’s a guide, an advocate, and a trusted friend.

At Lonestar Luxury Realty, clients experience more than professionalism—they experience genuine care, deep knowledge, and a guiding commitment to excellence that transforms transactions into lifelong relationships. Whether you’re preparing to buy, sell, or simply imagining the possibilities of your next chapter, there’s a boutique brokerage in North Texas that offers more than just real estate services— it delivers a refined experience where luxury and genuine hospitality come together.

At Lonestar Luxury Realty, the focus goes far beyond transactions. It’s about people, purpose, and the deep satisfaction of discovering a place that feels like home. Here, every step of the journey is handled with care, expertise, and a commitment to making your dreams a reality.

COVER STORY

In a world where first impressions matter more than ever, your professional headshot has become more than just a photo — it’s your brand in one frame. For Traci Schwomeyer, owner of Metroplex Headshots, the art of capturing the perfect image isn’t about smile-and-click moments — it’s about transforming the camera-shy into confident, polished professionals. Whether you’re a C-suite executive or a busy entrepreneur, Metroplex Headshots ensures that you will put your best face forward — literally.

Metroplex Headshots

TRACI SCHOWMEYER

Crafting Confidence One Shot at a Time

Traci’s path to photography was anything but traditional—and that’s exactly how she wanted it. “I never shot babies, brides or bluebonnets—and that was by choice,” she says with a smile. She got her start in commercial photography creating ad images for the farming and trucking industries across the U.S. and Canada. But, she saw a gap in the market—busy professionals who needed sharp, modern headshots. Metroplex Headshots was born. “I wanted to help people look confident and polished—no toddlers, tulle or wildflowers. Just business.” Today, her studio delivers clean, professional headshots for entrepreneurs and executives who don’t have time for anything less. “Our studio is all about business—just business,” she admits. “Intentionally focused on capturing the most confident expression of your brand.”

More Than Just a Headshot

At Metroplex Headshots, it’s not only about capturing a photo—it’s about creating an image that tells a story—one of professionalism, confidence and authenticity. Traci’s mission is clear—elevate personal branding through high-quality headshots that stand out in a crowded market. Whether it’s an executive in the boardroom or an entrepreneur building their brand, Metroplex Headshots is committed to delivering images that leave a lasting impression. “We specialize in headshots for the modern executive,” Traci explains. “Our goal is to make every client feel like the rockstar they are. With the right lighting, expert posing, and a no-pressure vibe, we capture not just a face— but the personality behind it.”

The Difference Is in the Details

So what sets Metroplex Headshots apart from the average photographer? It’s all about the experience. The studio doesn’t just take your picture—they guide you through every step of the process. From posing to lighting to that final click, Metroplex Headshots is dedicated to making you look your absolute best. “We don’t do awkward. We do authentic,” Traci says with a grin. “We’ve built our brand on creating a comfortable, fast, fun experience that removes the stress and turns it into confidence. We take the guesswork out of posing and make sure you walk away with a shot that makes you look like you belong at the top of your field.” In an industry where anyone with a camera thinks they can snap a “headshot,” Traci and her team pride themselves on their specialization. “We don’t do weddings or family portraits,” she notes. “We do headshots, and we do them well.”

Inspiring Women, Empowering Dreams

For Traci, Metroplex Headshots is more than a business—it’s a platform to inspire other women.

A Studio Built for Business:

HEADSHOTS FOR THE MODERN PROFESSIONAL

As a mother, entrepreneur, and business owner, Traci’s biggest inspiration is her daughter. “I want her to see that success isn’t just for ‘someday.’ It’s for moms, too. You can chase your dreams and build something from the ground up without losing your mind—or your sense of humor,” Traci says laughing out loud. In addition to her business goals, she’s truly passionate about giving back. It’s important to her to support local charitable organizations, particularly those that uplift both women and children—from donating sessions for fundraising events to sponsoring community initiatives, Traci uses her success to make a difference.

Looking Ahead, Expanding Horizons

The future is bright for Metroplex Headshots. Traci’s plans for growth include expanding into new areas like Plano and Allen, making highquality headshots accessible to even more of the professionals across the region. She’s eyeing the exciting prospect of franchising, so that more people can experience the signature Metroplex Headshots treatment. Traci says, “We’re growing because our clients are happy... and we’re not stopping anytime soon. We want to make getting great headshots easy, fast and fun for everyone.”

Success with a Side of Sunshine and Sanity Traci defines success as much more than just a profitable business—it’s about enjoying the journey. “Success isn’t just about results. It’s about having fun along the way. It’s about

growing, learning, and staying healthy—both physically and mentally,” she says. For Traci, a perfect day looks like fun in the sun, surrounded by family and friends, cruising on a boat and enjoying life. “It’s about balance, laughter, and making memories,” she explains. “And when the day ends, I’m reminded that life’s too short not to have fun—even when you’re working hard.”

First Impressions Matter

In today’s digital world, a professional headshot isn’t optional—it’s essential for building trust and credibility. From press features and social media, to client interactions and marketing, high-quality images ensure that your brand is represented with confidence, not cropped selfies. Metroplex Headshots is proud to be more than just a photography studio—it’s a unique brand that’s dedicated solely to capturing your confidence, crafting success, and inspiring you to look and feel your best. Traci truly believes that everyone is photogenic. “You being uncomfortable in front of the camera shouldn’t keep you from making a great impression on your clients. We will make it fun and you will leave with images that convey confidence!” she urges. As Traci continues to grow her business and her impact, one thing is for certain—her headshots will continue to help modern professionals across the Metroplex (and beyond) put their best face forward. When you’re ready to level up your professional image, Metroplex Headshots is here to make sure your first impression is unforgettable.

When Lisa Dean steps into a room, you don’t just see her — you feel her presence. She’s part powerhouse coach, part style icon, and entirely purpose-driven. With a mission to empower girls and women from the inside out, Lisa seamlessly blends her background in media, modeling and public speaking into two thriving brands: Lisa Dean Consulting and the Lisa Dean Boutique (aka ShopLisaDean). Her work isn’t just about personal transformation — it’s about legacy, leadership and loving who you are — from mindset to wardrobe.

Lisa Dean Consulting Lisa Dean Boutique

Lisa Dean Inc
Dean Boutique

From Runway to Real Talk

Lisa’s career began in the spotlight—working in radio and television, walking runways as a Ford model, and delivering keynote speeches across the globe. But her heart was always drawn to something deeper—helping young women find their voice and own their worth. “I started working with pageant contestants, and then national and international winners,” she notes. “It grew organically. I realized I didn’t just want to style women—I wanted to equip them.” That realization sparked a vision, a boutique where she could coach, consult and dress her clients all under one roof. When she found the perfect location in Colleyville, she knew it was divinely appointed. “The space wasn’t just a store. It was a calling.”

Couture with a Calling

Shop Lisa Dean is far more than just racks of beautiful clothing. It’s an experience. The small boutique carries designer pieces—including homecoming, prom, and evening wear from brands like Jovani—but the magic happens when wardrobe meets purpose. Lisa and her team don’t just help clients pick a dress—they help them step into their power. “We focus on relationships,” Lisa explains. “Whether you’re here for coaching or couture, our goal is the same—to build confidence and help you grow.” That commitment to connection has expanded Lisa’s one-woman dream into a full team of nine coaches, a boutique manager, and support staff. And their reputation? “Clients say we’re different,” she adds with a smile. “And then, after a session or two—they confirm it.”

Confidence One Workshop at a Time

Lisa’s summer workshop series reflects her own belief that confidence should be taught as early as possible. These sessions include etiquette, modeling, interview prep, and a special course tailored for high school seniors preparing for sorority recruitment. “It’s not just about them looking the part,” Lisa emphasizes. “It’s about feeling prepared, confident and aligned with who you are.” From the way young women walk into a room to how they speak about themselves, Lisa is rewriting the narrative for the next generation. “There’s no better reward than watching a shy girl transform into a strong, self-assured woman. That’s exactly why I do what I do.”

Grace-Filled Growth

Like many other business owners, Lisa’s biggest challenge hasn’t been about sales or strategy— it’s been setting healthy boundaries. “Because I lead with relationships, I want to be there for every client. But I’ve learned to prioritize my family, my health, and to give myself grace.”

Classes, Coaching & Couture:

LISA DEAN’S POWER, PURPOSE & PEARLS OF WISDOM

One recent breakthrough came when she was invited to speak in Chicago. Instead of rushing home, she took two extra days to reconnect with close friends. “I hadn’t done that in years. I finally realized that recharging isn’t selfish— it’s necessary.” Her secret to balance? Building a trustworthy team, protecting her peace, and leaning into her faith. “I have learned to give myself permission to pause. And I’ve surrounded myself with people who share the same values.”

A Legacy Measured in Lives

To Lisa, success isn’t found in spreadsheets or sales numbers—it’s in impact. “One of the most meaningful moments of my career came in the form of a letter from a mother,” she recalls. “She said, ‘Watching my daughter grow with you has been priceless. You’re doing what you were called to do.’” It’s feedback just like that which fuels Lisa’s mission. “Whether I’m coaching or dressing a client, I want them to walk away changed for the better.”

Soul Deep Style

While most people see Lisa’s polished exterior and feminine flair, there’s more than meets the eye. “People are shocked to learn I used to ride a Harley—and I’m usually the one driving the U-Haul for pop-up events,” she laughs. Her favorite quote is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord…” It’s more than a scripture—it’s a life mantra, etched into the marble on her office desk, grounding her every step of the way.

Moved by Faith

Lisa Dean isn’t just running a business—she’s building a movement. Through coaching, couture and compassion, she’s proving that confidence can be taught, style can be empowering, and faith can fuel it all. “God gave me gifts not for myself,” she says, “but to serve others.”And serve she does—with elegance, authenticity and a spark that leaves every client shining just a little brighter than before.

Final Words from Lisa Dean

“Growing up, I dreamed of being a lawyer, while my passions—dance, poetry, public speaking, modeling, acting and pageants— were simply hobbies. That changed when I was cast in a college TV show, leading me to earn a degree in Communications and build a 25year career in radio/tv, including professional modeling, reporting, hosting, choreographing and speaking. Over the decade, I’ve coached girls, women, and executives with workshops and one-on-one sessions, helping them refine their message, presence and style—most recently focusing on corporate presentation coaching with executives preparing for public speeches, presentations, and media interviews. From designing custom wardrobe pieces to coaching and consulting clients, I’ve seen how God used 40+ years of “hobbies” to prepare me for this purpose—to empower as many as I can, for as long as I can, through speaking, life and coaching. My journey has just begun!”

Why CKM | Trusted talent, proven results. At CKM, our team of dedicated professionals— many with us for over eight years—sets us apart. We go beyond basic training by equipping our ambassadors with product insights and engaging facts that foster real connections with consumers. The result? Memorable experiences that boost both brand awareness and sales.

Your Brand Our Priority | We pride ourselves on building strong client relationships through

clear communication and consistent results. A great example is our client, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024. Cynthia Lohr, Co-owner and Chief Brand Officer, is a driving force behind the company’s commitment to leadership in diversity, equality and inclusion within the wine industry. CKM Management is proud to work with clients who value strong women leaders—something clearly reflected in J. Lohr’s Texas team, including North Texas Area Manager April Milby—pictured (above right) with Cindy Kay (left) at the Vin Hotel.

Special Thanks | With heartfelt appreciation to J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines and The Vin Hotel in Grapevine for their generous support of CKM.

Legacy of Experience | I founded CKM in 2000 as a modeling agency, drawing on my 25+ years of experience in fashion, print and events. By 2004, I saw an opportunity to grow, and I expanded our focus to include wine, spirits and special event marketing. Since then, CKM has evolved into the dynamic promotional staffing powerhouse it is today.

Setting Standards | From the first pour to the final impression, CKM Management is dedicated to delivering excellence at every step. We provide confident, knowledgeable talent who do more than just represent your brand—they embody it. Our brand ambassadors are trained to create meaningful connections to leave a lasting impact on consumers and elevate your brand’s presence. With statewide coverage across Texas—from major metropolitan hubs to smaller, high-potential markets—and ongoing expansion into new states, CKM is equipped to meet your needs wherever they arise. Whether your event is on-premise or off, you can count on us to handle it with professionalism, precision and passion for results.

After Hours | At the end of a long day, I love unwinding with a glass of wine and the cozy company of my rescue cats!

At James Landscaping, we offer integrated plans for phased work or future installation to make the project manageable. A commitment to quality work and customer satisfaction is our cornerstone.

Our staff regularly attends conferences to educate ourselves about these new developments which we then pass along to our clients. We include organic fertilizer in all of our soil preparation. After three years of using organic fertilizer, it is possible to reduce watering up to 25%.

My Curly Adventures TEXAS TRAVEL AND BEYOND

Jessica Serna | TRAVEL BLOGGER

Specialty | I’m the creator of My Curly Adventures, a Texas-based travel brand that inspires people to live a travel lifestyle—even with a 9-5. As a Latina blogger, I share hidden gems around Texas and beyond, proving you don’t have to go far to experience the magic of travel. Along the way, I talk about curly hair tips, married life, and turning everyday moments into adventures. With storytelling, photography, and a curated magazine, I aim to inspire others, especially Latinas and women of color, to embrace their wanderlust and go after their dreams.

Defining Success | For me, success came when I took the leap and left my full-time job to chase my travel dreams. From there, I dove into learning—SEO, pitching, writing, photography, and running a business. Every skill gained and message from a follower means success.

Work-Home-Life Balance | Traveling for work might sound relaxing, but it’s nonstop planning, writing and shooting content. To stay grounded, my husband and I schedule time between trips to unplug, spend time with family—and just be present. Disconnecting from tech helps me recharge.

Challenges | One challenge has been showing the value behind what we do. Yes, we travel—but it’s real work to produce quality content. We’ve built a strong brand, expanded into multimedia, and created a team that enjoys flexibility and remote work—all while doing what we love.

Dream Vacation | My dream trip? Anywhere near water, with a spa and fun local experiences. I especially love Mexico and South America for the culture and language—it’s where I feel most alive. If you’re craving some inspiration, join me on My Curly Adventures as I prove adventure is always closer than you think!

The Rose Table SAVORING LIFE’S PLEASURES

Katie-Rose

| FOOD BLOGGER / AUTHOR

Specialty | As a food blogger, cookbook author, and content creator, I aim to inspire people to cook at home and throw magical parties. The Rose Table is best known for my Disney Dinners series, which I launched in 2018 and has since gone viral with millions of views.

Defining Success | To me, success isn’t just about big deals—though working with Disney was amazing. It’s about bringing a vision to life exactly how I imagined it. When a wild idea—like a Jurassic Park party— turns out even better than expected, that’s true success.

Challenges | I’m a one-woman show—filming, cooking, hosting, photographing, editing—it’s all me. People often don’t realize how much goes into each episode of The Rose Table, and while it’s rewarding, it’s also incredibly exhausting.

Greatest Professional Accomplishment | Partnering with Disney is my proudest moment. I started with 10,000 fans and grew to over 300,000. My Alice in Wonderland episode went viral, landing me a video deal with Meta, and Disney later sponsored three episodes. Last year alone, my videos reached over 40 million views.

Work-Home-Life Balance | I work long hours running both The Rose Table and my PR firm, but I love it. I always make time to be outdoors—walking my dog, gardening, or playing with my horses. Nature resets me, and just an hour with my horse makes me feel brand new.

My Last Meal | Definitely my grilled lobster tails with ginger lime beurre blanc, roasted potatoes, and filet mignon. And for dessert? A big slice of my Chocolate Lavender Dream Cake. Heaven!.

Lorraine Haan-Stewart

PHOTOGRAPHER / SUPER-FOSTER

Specialty | I specialize in commercial and family photography—from senior portraits and maternity, to headshots, food and product images. I wear many creative hats, and I love it!

Defining Success | Success means clients who return year after year, who truly value what I do. It’s the moment they see their images and get emotional—that’s the real reward.

Work-Home-Life Balance | My life is a blend of photography and dog rescue, especially fostering special needs and hospice dogs. It’s not a 9-5 role—neither is photography—so flexibility is key. My mornings start early with my pack of 7 dogs and 2 fosters. Their love fuels my day!

Challenges | Starting over in a new country was tough. When I moved from England, I couldn’t work at first, but I had my camera. It kept me grounded and gave me purpose in a new land.

Giving Back | I support dog rescues through fostering, donations, and photography for fundraisers. My husband and I also run a small beekeeping business and donate 25% of proceeds to local rescues.

Words To Live By | “Life is like a camera. Focus on what’s important, develop from the negatives, and if it doesn’t work out—take another shot.”

What Clients Can Expect | A relaxed, friendly consultation—either in person or by phone—to understand goals. Everything is clear and agreed to in writing, so shoots are smooth, stress-free and even fun!

End of a Long Day | I play my violin to wind down. I’m still learning, but my deaf fosters are my biggest fans—no judgment if I hit a wrong note!

SK Momilies

Want to be featured with your kids? Simply email your contact info to the editor at: elena@societylifemagazine.com. Then you will answer 20 questions and we will take professional photos of you and your kids (we will even give you some!)

In this issue of Society Life’s Mom’s column, we asked the Renata Salons Owner and Mrs. Texas International, Lauren Jackson, to answer 20 questions about her experiences in becoming and being a mom. Lauren and her husband have a blended family of five children: Haley 32, Morgen 27, Rain 18, Asher 11 and Pax 10. Lauren lives with her husband, Chris and their two youngest boys in Grapevine. Here’s what she had to say…

because

I said so

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LORRAINE HAAN-STEWART | BY SHANNON SALINSKY

SOCIETY LIFE: What’s one of your earliest memories you have of your Mom? LAUREN JACKSON: I was running around with a tent pole and fell, and the pole injured my throat and mouth. This is exactly why we don’t run with sharp objects! One of my first memories was her rocking me and comforting me after that.

SL: What is something you thought about Motherhood that was totally wrong? LJ: That discipline would be easy... I didn’t have a clue! Discipline is different for every child and I had to figure out what works best for each child. I also think as a mom it can be difficult to discipline because we love our kids so much and want them to have it all, but loving them is truly teaching them how to be a kind, caring, loving and productive person in this world.

SL: What’s something you always wanted to do but didn’t... why didn’t you? LJ: I always wanted to spend a month in Europe traveling like a nomad. I think when I was younger, I was scared and didn’t think I could do it. My only regrets in life have been not trying things because of insecurities. I hope to do that later in life with my husband and possibly my kids when they get older.

SL: Was there something your Mom did when you were a kid that you swore you’d never do as a parent? LJ: My mom was a single mother and didn’t have the luxury to pick me up from school. Once I had my children, I changed my schedule so that I could pick them up from school every day. When I was in school, I remember wanting to see my mom when I got out of school. I never wanted my kids to feel that way and I always want my kids to know I am there for them and always will be. No matter what—I will always be there and show up for them.

SL: What did you think you wanted to be when you grew up? LJ: This question is hilarious because I wanted to be a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader, actress, or a missionary—which makes me laugh out loud!

SL: How have your notions of what it means to be a Mom changed over your lifetime? LJ: Before becoming a mother, I thought it would be so fun to have a baby. Now I realize what a big responsibility it is to be a mom. My most important job is protecting my children and helping to develop them into becoming loving, kind and compassionate people. It is the hardest, but most rewarding job I’ve ever had.

SL: What’s the best family vacation you’ve ever taken? LJ: The best family vacation we took as a family was to Hawaii. My kids had so many new experiences like swimming with huge turtles and snorkeling. It was so much fun watching my kids enjoy themselves the way they did.

SL: Is there a moment or event that radically changed the way you saw Motherhood? LJ: Adopting my oldest son changed my life and changed my view on motherhood. Carrying a child does not make you a mother. Loving and nurturing a child is what creates that unconditional motherly love. I have experienced motherhood in every way—through adoption, being a bonus mom, and having a child biologically. They are all the most beautiful expression of love on earth!

SL: When did you know you were ready to have kids? LJ: When I turned 30, my internal baby clock was exploding. All of a sudden, I felt such a strong desire and need to be a mother.

SL: What’s your favorite photo of your family or kids? LJ: My favorite photo is from a photo shoot we did on Lake Grapevine. My boys were one and two years old and my youngest step daughter was eight years old and lived with us full time. When I look back on that photo, I see so much joy and love.

SL: What was the first year of motherhood like for you? LJ: My first year as a mother was a whirlwind. A week after adopting my oldest son and bringing him

Momilies

home from the hospital, I found out I was pregnant. I was completely shocked and once I had both boys to care for, I was exhausted and quite honestly, just surviving.

SL: What do you want or wish most for your kids? LJ: I want my children to feel free to be who they are and walk through life showing kindness and compassion for everyone.

SL: What are some of your biggest struggles as a Mom? LJ: I would say guilt. I think as a mother we can be the hardest on ourselves and want to do everything perfectly all the time. The truth is we are human and need to be the first ones to give ourselves grace.

SL: What would your perfect day off be like? Describe it. LJ: My perfect day would start with breakfast at my favorite restaurant, Chez Fabian. After that, I would get an IV drip at Thrive Drip spa and then get my nails done at French Nails, followed by a workout at the Rec Grapevine, and then a massage anywhere in our local area! I would then pick up my kids from school and do some mom things and finish my day with a date with my husband at Oishii! The perfect day of selfcare, time with my boys, and a date with my man.

SL: What’s the one song that means the most to you? LJ: The song that brings so many emotions for me is ‘How Great Thou Art.’ It reminds me of my grandfather who passed away when I was eight years old. It was his favorite song, and I can remember him singing it so loudly at church. At the time—I was humiliated! It was played at my grandparent’s funeral and to this day it brings me so much joy to listen to.

SL: What advice would you give to your younger self about Motherhood? LJ: I would tell my younger self to trust your gut and instincts, be fully present, don’t be afraid to ask for help, prioritize self-care, and to enjoy the journey while embracing every moment.

SL: Is there a quote, saying, words of advice or scripture you consider words to live by? LJ: “Be the reason someone smiles. Be the reason someone feels loved and believes in the goodness of people,” by Roy T. Bennett.

SL: If you could share a meal with any woman past, present or future who would it be? Why? LJ: I would like to share a meal with Mother Teresa. She exemplified unwavering dedication to serving the poorest of the poor with humility, compassion and love. Through her actions she showed the world that no one is too impoverished, broken, or lost to receive love and care. Her legacy is a powerful reminder of how kindness can impact the world.

SL: What Mom from real-life or even TV/movies do you admire most? LJ: Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. What an honor to be chosen to carry and to mother the Son of God. I also can’t imagine her pain, fear and devastation. When I think of being a mother, I think about sacrifice—and Mary sacrificed so much as the mother of Christ.

SL: At the end of a long day, what do you do for fun or relaxation? LJ: I love to watch The Real Housewives! You can find me at home, curled up on the couch watching any of those episodes. I also love to go to happy hour with some of my incredible team from the salon! –

{ original grandmother }

SK FatherHood

Considering it is Mother’s Day month, I would like to remember an OG - an original grandmother. The OG is my long-deceased grandmother. Her early years, World War I into the Roaring 20s, were spent in NYC. To out-run the Great Depression, her father moved the family to Detroit. He didn’t run fast enough. There she met my grandfather, separated from him, and then wrote off the male species. The two exceptions were my brother and me. Despite the regular torment that we inflicted upon her, she refused to write us off.

SUCH TORMENT INCLUDED SCANDALS KNOWN AS THE RESURRECTION, THE EXTORSION AND THE INCURSION.

THE RESURRECTION

My grandmother had a compulsive nature. Her phone calls were not just singular events. They were multiple— occurring in a series over the course of hours. It was almost as annoying as my younger brother with whom I had a tenuous relationship. One afternoon, in the early 1980s before voicemail and answering machines, she relentlessly rang. Each time, with ever-increasing frustration, I picked up the phone. Upon the fourth iteration of calls, she realized she had not yet spoken with my brother.

She asked if she could speak with him. This fourth call pushed me into peak frustration. I went on the offensive. I told her he wasn’t available. When she asked why, I told her because he wasn’t there. When she asked why again, I told her because he hadn’t been around in weeks. When she dared to ask why for the third time, pushed to my limit, I said because he’s dead. It’s a good thing she didn’t ask why again, because Friday the 13th was my favorite movie. After a few seconds of silence, I figured she was owed more information.

I explained that my parents didn’t share the news with her because they didn’t want to upset her. My parents didn’t need to upset her, because I did. It got serious when in a cracked voice she began to mumble in Yiddish. She eventually switched to English and told me that she was coming over and abruptly hung up. I wasn’t in the mood for a visit. I rang her back and shared the

good news that he wasn’t dead. She demanded to speak with him, but my brother refused to take her call. Only after I gave him three dollars did he agree to rise from the dead. She still came over.

THE EXTORSION

My grandmother would occasionally join us for dinner out. One day, as a preteen, when it was my turn to pick the restaurant, I picked Chi-Chi’s Mexican Restaurant. I liked the tastefully named “wet burrito.” For dessert, I enjoyed the fried ice cream. The chemical after-taste was just the thing to cut the lingering “wet” from the burrito.

My brother didn’t share the same affinity for Chi-Chi’s. In protest, he refused to exit the car. Tired of his shenanigans, my parents left him in the car and went into the restaurant. My grandmother and I remained with him. I looked forward to watching a stranger whisk him away, and I wanted to be there to give him the bird as they did. My grandmother shared a similar thought, but whereas I was hopeful, she was worried.

As a result, she offered him something from the take-out menu. It was in the form of a one-hundred-dollar bill for him to take himself out of the car and into the restaurant. That evening while he dined with Ben Franklin in his pocket, I dined with a mariachi band at my back. Four years later, as karma would have it, my grandmother would have something at, or better stated on, her back.

THE INCURSION

The year I turned 16 and the year my brother turned 14, I got a car. My brother got an iguana. The car was a 10year old, 65 horsepower, Datsun 210. He got the better deal. He quickly bonded with the iguana. He took the iguana everywhere. I never bonded with the car, but I had to take it everywhere.

On Mother’s Day 1990, I took the car, my brother took his iguana, and we took my grandmother to a family get together. My brother was a progressive iguana owner. He allowed it to roam freely, uncaged, in the car until it settled in by hanging upside-down from my car ceiling. My grandmother, unaware of a reptilian rider above her head, settled into the passenger seat. My Datsun had a manual transmission, and I was a new driver. The Datsun did not take kindly to the way I tamed its power. It defiantly bucked with each gear change—increasing my grandmother’s, well-known, propensity for car sickness The more the car bucked, the further my grandmother rolled down the window. The further she rolled down the window, the colder it became in the car. Stunned by cold air, the iguana briefly went comatose and dropped from the ceiling onto my grandmother’s back shoulder. The unexpected drop-in by the tropical terrorist was a tipping point. At a red light, she stumbled out of the car and shared her breakfast with other motorists while the dazed iguana traversed her back. A concerned passerby asked if everything was alright. Of course it was alright, she was the OG!

PAPER

HOW SISTERS AND A PIECE OF PAPER ARE CHANGING THE WORLD

One Fold At A Time

for WATER

SK

greater good

WHEN SISTERS KATHERINE AND ISABELLE ADAMS WERE 5 AND 8 YEARS OLD, THEY LEARNED THAT MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO CLEAN DRINKING WATER. THIS KNOWLEDGE HAD A PROFOUND IMPACT ON THEM, AND THEY DECIDED THEY WANTED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. THEY BEGAN MAKING HANDCRAFTED ORIGAMI ORNAMENTS AND EXCHANGING THEM FOR DONATIONS ON NOVEMBER 3, 2011 TO HELP BUILD A WATER WELL FOR A COMMUNITY IN ETHIOPIA.

Paper For Water is a Dallas-based 501c3 nonprofit organization that aims to address the global water crisis by providing clean water access and sanitation. They raise funds primarily through the sale of origami ornaments, with proceeds going towards funding water and sanitation projects in various countries. Paper for Water also focuses on raising awareness about the water crisis through educational programs and community engagement. Started by three young girls with a mission to combine fundraising with education and community engagement to address the global water crisis, one origami ornament and one piece of paper at a time.

A Mission Born from Compassion

What started as a simple craft project in a Texas living room has grown into a global movement that’s changing lives one fold at a time. Sisters Isabelle and Katherine Adams were just 8 and 5 years old when they learned a heartbreaking truth—every 15 seconds, a child was dying due to unclean water, and millions of girls just like them were missing school to haul water for their families. That sobering knowledge sparked an idea— and then a mission. But, they didn’t wait

to grow up. They started Paper for Water. Launched in 2011 as a DBA under their nonprofit, Keiki International Foundation, Paper for Water uses handcrafted origami ornaments to fund clean water and sanitation projects around the world. Their motto? Bringing water and the Word to the Thirsty—one piece of paper at a time.

From Paper Cranes to Global Change

In their first effort, the sisters folded origami ornaments and exchanged them

for donations to help build a well in Ethiopia. Their goal was modest—just $500. But the world took notice. People saw two young girls folding with purpose, and they responded with generosity. What began as a neighborhood effort quickly took flight. Today, with the help of volunteers and donors, Paper for Water has raised more than $3.5 million, funding over 350 water and sanitation projects in 20 countries, from Kenya and India to Haiti and New Mexico. The simple paper crane became a symbol of hope, compassion and change.

Empowering Youth, One Fold at a Time Paper for Water isn’t just about wells—it’s about equipping the next generation of changemakers. Through youth leadership programs, the organization teaches philanthropy, public speaking, event planning, and entrepreneurship. Kids and teens learn that they don’t have to wait to be adults— or billionaires—to make a real difference. Co-founder Katherine often says, “When you give a lot, you get a lot back. Sometimes you get more than you gave.” Kids and teens across North Texas and beyond have taken that message to heart. From folding paper to planning events, they’ve learned empathy, gained confidence, and become leaders. And it’s not just students. Inmates at a juvenile detention center in Dallas joined the movement, folding paper ornaments that would go on to fund water wells. For many, it was the first time they realized their lives could have purpose— and a real impact on the world.

Clean

Water, Brighter Futures

In much of the developing world, water is not life-giving—it’s life-threatening. Diarrhea caused by unsafe water kills over 760,000 children every year. That’s more than AIDS, malaria, and measles combined. But with clean water, everything changes. Through partnerships with local organizations and global NGOs, Paper for Water builds water wells and installs latrines, plus offers hygiene training. The results are truly transformative—girls return to school, families stay healthy, communities thrive. Over 100,000 people now have access to clean water because two girls cared enough to fold paper and ask others to help. And the work doesn’t stop overseas. In Smith Lake, New Mexico, on the Navajo Reservation, Paper for Water has helped provide clean water to families right here in the United States. Their efforts were even spotlighted by Nickelodeon’s 2016 HALO Effect.

A Family-Fueled Mission

Behind Isabelle and Katherine is a family fully invested in the cause. Their mother, Deborah, once a Certified Financial Planner, is now a full-time volunteer, coordinating speaking engagements and protecting time for her daughters to simply be kids. She sees herself not just as a manager, but a mentor, echoing the lessons she learned as a participant in the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. Their father, Ken, a trained physician and entrepreneur, supports behind the scenes with donor receipting and administrative needs. His love for origami began as a child, passed down from his Japanese mother. His father, a missionary in Korea, modeled service as a way of life. That legacy lives on in the mission of Paper for Water. And now, the youngest Adams sibling, Trinity, 15, serves as Chief Creative Officer “in training” by folding ornaments, teaching origami, and speaking at events. Art, purpose, and compassion run in the family.

Origami Meets Art and Advocacy

If you’ve been to Galleria Dallas and looked up, you may have seen it—four stories of delicate paper butterflies cascading down through the air, an origami installation— created by Paper for Water. Their stunning designs have been featured in the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalog as a Fantasy Gift, and showcased on national platforms like Good Morning America, People Magazine, CNN and The Kelly Clarkson Show. But it’s not about fame. It’s about folding art into action. Every piece tells a story. Every sale funds global change.

Making Giving Contagious Paper for Water has ignited a culture of service in communities far and wide. Organizations like the Girl Scouts, National Charity League, and BBYO partner with them to offer meaningful volunteer hours. Plus, thousands of people are taught the art of

origami and educated on the global water crisis each year, both in-person and virtually. Even those who once felt hopeless have found renewed purpose. Deborah recalls moments when “just the right people showed up at just the right time” to help, fold, or support. That kind of synchronicity, she says, keeps them going.

Join the Movement

Want to help fund a well every month? Join the Well of the Month Club by committing to a monthly donation of at least $10. It’s a small act with an extraordinary ripple effect. With every dollar, more children can go to school. More mothers can rest easier. More families can dream bigger. Nearly every dollar raised by Paper for Water goes directly into programmatic work—clean water, sanitation and educational outreach. Their financial policies are as disciplined as they are mission-driven.

Building a More Compassionate World

At its heart, Paper for Water is about more than water. It’s about purpose. About teaching children and adults alike that service is not a sacrifice—it’s a privilege. It’s about folding paper into action, transforming a craft into a cause, and proving that age doesn’t limit impact. Isabelle, now 21, is studying political science at Agnes Scott College. Katherine, 19, is a freshman at SMU. Trinity, just starting high school, is already carrying the creative flame. Together, they’re shaping a world where empathy is powerful and where clean water is a human right, not a luxury. Because in the end, when we quench physical thirst, we also quench something deeper—the universal desire to matter, to serve, and to give.

Elderflower Sangria

This is the perfect easy, laid back cocktail. This delightful drink is perfect to sip in the garden or even in the pool this summer. Many sangria recipes call for sugar or simple syrup, but this elderflower liquor (St. Germain) is quite sweet on its own. If you want, add 1-2 ounces of simple syrup to taste. Garnish glasses with fresh mint, rosemary, or lavender sprigs and edible flowers such as pansies or dianthus if have any in the garden. Cheers!

INGREDIENTS

1 bottle sauvignon blanc or pinot grigio

1 lemon, sliced

1/2 orange, sliced

1/2 cup elderflower liquor

1-2 cups club soda

Optional:

1-2 oz simple syrup

Serving suggestion: strawberries, mint, additional orange slices, edible flowers

.....................................................................

(1) Add lemon and orange slices to a large pitcher. Add wine and elderflower liquor. Stir and refrigerate for 8 hours.

.....................................................................

(2) Add club soda to the sangria just before serving.

.....................................................................

(3) Fill glasses with ice and an orange slice. Pour sangria over ice and garnish with a sprig of mint or lavender, a strawberry, and an edible flower.

BERRY BOWL TO GO açai bowls + Berrymobile

I have a confession: I’m completely late to the açaí bowl party. In case you are too, let me start with a definition of açaí bowl. Açaí bowls are popular snacks imported from Brazil. It starts with the frozen and mashed fruit of the açaí palm—often described as having a slightly earthy, berry taste. It’s high in antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C and potassium. If I haven’t won you over yet (I wasn’t convinced either), then let me get to toppings. You see, the açaí bowl is essentially a healthy “sundae.” You have your icy creamy açaí base, then you sweeten it up by topping it with granola, fruits and berries. And if you’re like me, just “healthy-ish,” you go a step further with chocolate chips, cacao fudge or

caramel. You can have your fiber and antioxidants, and enjoy it, too!

The reason I am now on the açaí bandwagon is Berry Bowl to Go. A beloved mobile açaí bowl vendor since 2021, Berry Bowl to Go expanded its presence in April with a new brick-and-mortar location in Southlake, right outside of my gym. Situated at 280 Commerce Street, within the 280 Sports Complex, owners Gaby and Miguel Boscan continue to serve the signature açaí bowls that garnered them a loyal following, with the addition of smoothies and lattes. Gaby and Miguel, also Southlake residents, have already been recognized for

their commitment to promoting healthy eating habits. Their efforts were acknowledged when they received the Aramark Local Restaurant Row Award, highlighting the couple’s positive impact on the community. “We strive to educate our customers about the benefits of açaí,” notes Gaby, also a nutritionist and dietician, “and inspire them to make healthier choices in their everyday lives.”

The end of the school year means two things in Texas—it’s getting hot and there are tons of celebration— Teacher Appreciation, graduation, Memorial Day and beyond. For those seeking a unique touch to their events, Berry Bowl to Go’s OG concept, “Berrymobile” food cart, offers an interactive experience. This mobile açaí bowl bar allows guests to customize bowls on-site, selecting their preferred bases, fruits, granola and indulgent additions. It’s an engaging way to bring the Berry Bowl

to Go experience directly to your venue. Whether a small gathering, business meeting, or large party, their catering options provide a healthy and refreshing alternative, especially in the warmer months. Clients can choose from bowl sizes, including: 12oz, 16oz, and kid-sized portions, as well as sweeter frozen bases, such as mango and coconut. So yes, I may be fashionably late to the açaí bowl party—but thanks to Berry Bowl to Go, I’m now staying until the very last spoonful. Whether you’re a health nut or a sweet tooth, there’s a bowl with your name on it. Just follow the Berrymobile… your snack dreams are waiting.
