God Is Already There TRUSTING THE ONE WHO ALREADY KNOWS WHAT TOMORROW HOLDS

WHEN THE “WHAT IFS” CREEP IN There is something about the beginning of a school year that can bring out the “what ifs” in all of us. What if my child struggles? What if they don’t make friends? What if the classes are too difficult? What if they make the wrong choices? What if I can’t protect them from everything they will face? Parents are especially good at mentally traveling into tomorrow and trying to solve problems that haven’t happened yet. We worry because we love. But worry can convince us that everything depends on our ability to anticipate what comes next. Scripture offers another way. “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:8). God doesn’t simply promise to meet us when we arrive. He goes before us. HE’S ALREADY IN THE CLASSROOM Before your child walks through that classroom door, God is there. Before they meet that teacher, face that test, sit alone at lunch

or discover a friendship that may last for years, God is there. And that promise is not only for our children. Maybe your new season has nothing to do with school. Perhaps you’re facing a career change, financial uncertainty, an empty nest, a difficult decision or a future that is different than you imagined. We all encounter these moments when we wish God would hand us the entire plan. Instead, He asks us to trust Him with the next step. Faith isn’t knowing exactly what tomorrow holds. It’s knowing Who will be there when tomorrow comes. LOOSEN YOUR GRIP One of the hardest parts of parenting is realizing that our kids were never meant to remain completely within our control. As they grow, we have to loosen our grip little by little. We can prepare them. Encourage them. Teach them. Pray for them. And then we have to trust God with the places we cannot follow. That can be frightening, but it can also be freeing. Our children will encounter circumstances we cannot fix

and decisions we cannot make for them. Yet those very moments can become opportunities for them to discover a faith of their own—to learn that God isn’t simply the God their parents told them about, but the God who walks beside them personally. WALK FORWARD WITH FAITH As another school year begins, pray over the backpacks, classrooms, teachers, friendships and journeys ahead. But pray for yourself, too. Ask God to replace the anxiety with trust and the need to control tomorrow with confidence in His presence. There will be unexpected turns this year. Some will bring joy—others may stretch your faith. But none will surprise God. We don’t need to see the entire road before taking the next step. We simply need to remember that wherever that road leads, we will never arrive somewhere God hasn’t already been. So send them forward with courage, step into your own new season with faith and remember—whatever tomorrow holds, God is already there.

RIPE READS BOOK REVIEWS

There are some stories that stay with you not because of what happened, but because of what someone chose to do afterward. In Twice Betrayed, author Susan Schleppegrell shares an intensely personal journey through deception, devastating loss and, ultimately, the rediscovery of her own strength. It is a story born from betrayal, but it has a lasting message of resilience, awareness and hope. Schleppegrell’s experience began with a romance scam carefully built upon trust, emotional connection and empty promises that appeared genuine. By the time the truth emerged, the betrayal had taken both an emotional and financial toll. Then, while searching for answers and hoping to recover what she had lost, she found herself deceived a second time by someone claiming to offer help.

As September winds down, the State Fair of Texas will once again welcome visitors to Fair Park in Dallas for one of the Lone Star State’s most anticipated annual celebrations. The 2026 State Fair of Texas, running from September 25 through October 18, brings together everything fair-goers have come to love—thrilling Midway rides, live music, livestock shows, shopping, family entertainment and, of course, an ever-changing lineup of creative fair foods. North Texas food lovers have an extra great reason to make reservations as DFW Restaurant Week celebrates its 30th anniversary, bringing together memorable meals paired with meaningful community impact. The monthlong culinary tradition officially runs from August 10 through Labor Day, September 7. This year, 43 Tarrant County restaurants are joining the celebration, offering diners an opportunity to experience some of the area’s favorite dining destinations while supporting Fort Worth nonprofit Lena Pope. Twenty percent of each Restaurant Week meal purchased at participating Tarrant County restaurants benefits the nonprofit organization’s counseling, education and behavior intervention programs for local children and families. These participating restaurants will serve specially curated threecourse prix fixe dinners for $49 or $59, while select locations will offer two-course lunches or weekend brunches for $29. In honor of the 30th anniversary, restaurants may also feature a new $99 Signature Experience Dinner, adding VIP touches such as chef’s table experiences, specialty courses, as well as signature cocktails. The impact extends far beyond the table. Since partnering with DFW Restaurant Week in 1998, Lena Pope has received over $3.3 million through the event. In 2025, Restaurant Week generated $681,327 for its charity partners across North Texas, including $176,092 for Lena Pope. The frozen adventure begins with a towering sculpture of Hedwig, Harry’s beloved owl, before guests journey through scenes inspired by Hogsmeade Station, the Forbidden Forest, The Three Broomsticks, The Great Hall and Hogwarts Castle. Inside the castle-themed room, six impressive two-story ice slides lead toward the Quidditch Pitch, where the space bursts into light and color in celebration of each Hogwarts house. Of course, creating this much frozen magic requires keeping things chilly. ICE! is maintained at a crisp 9 degrees, but there’s no need to arrive dressed for the North Pole. Gaylord Texan provides its signature blue parkas for visitors to wear while exploring the attraction. Guests can also watch talented ice artisans demonstrate their craft during live carving demonstrations before browsing festive gifts and exclusive collectibles in Christmas Village.Those extraordinary frozen scenes come with an equally impressive story. Master ice artisans will travel more than 6,400 miles from Harbin, China, known as the “Ice City” and home to the world’s largest ice and snow festival, to bring their artistry to Grapevine. And the holiday magic doesn’t end when guests leave the wizarding world. A Passion That Started Early Jessica Fagin’s path to business ownership seems almost tailor-made for Gymboree Play & Music. For a long time, I felt like everyone around me had a head start and I was always trying to catch up. I remember telling my dad, “It’s okay if my sisters become doctors or my friends make more money than me. I’ll just have to work harder and work more hours.” And strangely enough, I was okay with that. That feeling of being behind became something that pushed me forward. Today, I don’t look at myself and think about everything I wasn’t. I look at how far I’ve come and, more importantly, how far I want to go. I’m learning, chasing goals and continuing to push myself forward. Life to me is not a sprint—it’s a marathon. And my race isn’t over. For years, I thought I was running because I was behind everyone else. Somewhere along the way, I realized I wasn’t running to catch them anymore. I’m running my own race. And that is why I inspire myself.

Opportunities with Meta and later official collaborations with Disney helped grow the brand beyond anything I imagined and confirmed that taking creative risks can truly pay off.

Work-Home-Life Balance | Since I work from home while also running my PR company, balance can definitely be challenging. For one October evening, the Hurst Conference Center will take on a distinctly Parisian air as black-and-white elegance meets a mission close to home. Serving Our Seniors will host its 2026 Festival of Friends Gala—A Parisian Night in Black & White—bringing together supporters, volunteers, community leaders and local businesses for an evening designed to celebrate, connect and give back. Behind the French-inspired dinner, dancing and sophisticated setting is a purpose that extends far beyond one night—helping older adults throughout Northeast Tarrant County continue living safely, independently and with dignity in the homes and communities they love. —————————————————————————————————————————— WHO: At the heart of Festival of Friends is Serving Our Seniors, a nonprofit organization that has spent 45 years helping older adults maintain their independence and their well-being. The organization serves seniors throughout Northeast Tarrant County through practical assistance and meaningful personal connections. Originally established in 1981 as Mid-Cities Care Corps, the organization began when two social workers, Beth Cochran and Mari Donaldson, set up operations in donated office space at Richland Hills United Methodist Church. In 2022, MidCities Care Corps began doing business as Serving Our Seniors, a name that more immediately communicates its mission. Today, SOS is supported by churches, civic organizations, businesses, individuals and volunteers who work together to provide what the organization describes as “Help, Hope and Healing” to senior neighbors. Its mission remains centered on preserving independence and well-being throughout Northeast Tarrant County. Leading that mission is Executive Director Elizabeth Grace, who sees Festival of Friends as both a celebration of the community’s generosity and an important investment in the seniors SOS serves. “We are excited to welcome our supporters, community partners, volunteers, and friends for an elegant evening that celebrates both our mission and the incredible generosity of our community,” Grace shared. —————————————————————————————————————————— WHAT: Festival of Friends is SOS’s largest and most anticipated fundraiser of the year — and the 2026 gala promises to transport guests to Paris without leaving Northeast Tarrant County. Together, the programs are designed to reduce isolation, encourage community engagement and help seniors to age with dignity. Transportation volunteers, for example, may drive clients to medical appointments or help with quality-of-life needs such as trips to the grocery store, pharmacy or bank. Helping Hands volunteers can assist with minor home repairs, wheelchair ramps, grab bars and lawn care, while Social Outreach volunteers participate in monthly events and make calls or visits that help seniors remain connected. These services address a simple, but increasingly important reality—remaining independent often requires a helping hand. A ride, a small home repair or a friendly connection can make a meaningful difference for an older adult who wants to continue living at home. The towering figure of Big Tex, the glow of the Midway and the unmistakable scent of fair food may define those 24 celebrated days each fall, but beyond the rides, games and traditions is a story many Texans may not know. The State Fair of Texas is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization — and its commitment to the community continues long after the gates close. One of the clearest examples of that mission can be found growing quietly in the heart of Fair Park. Through Big Tex Urban Farms, the State Fair has transformed its agricultural roots into a year-round effort that grows fresh produce, supports neighbors facing food insecurity, educates young people and demonstrates how an urban farm can help cultivate a healthier community.

The State Fair of Texas traces its history to 1886, but its purpose today reaches well beyond staging one of the country’s most recognizable annual events. Its nonprofit mission centers on promoting agriculture, education and community involvement through family-friendly entertainment. Unlike what some assume about an event of its size, the State Fair does not receive government funding for its nonprofit purpose. Instead, proceeds generated through the annual Fair help fund that mission.

Proceeds support scholarships, community programs and improvements, while also helping fund programs such as Big Tex Urban Farms— which embodies all three pillars of the Fair’s mission—agriculture, education and community involvement—in one place.

Big Tex Urban Farms is a year-round community outreach and agricultural initiative operated by the State Fair of Texas, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to agriculture, education and community involvement. Since 2016, the Farms has grown and donated fresh produce to organizations serving families throughout South Dallas and the Fair Park community, helping increase access to nutritious food while providing hands-on agricultural and educational opportunities. Through innovative urban farming, community partnerships and volunteer support, Big Tex Urban Farms is cultivating a healthier, stronger community— one harvest, one partnership and one neighbor at a time.

Big Tex Urban Farms began in 2016 as a horticulture-based community initiative designed to address a very real need close to home—access to fresh, nutritious food in neighborhoods surrounding Fair Park. Its beginnings were relatively modest. The project started with 100 raised planter boxes in a parking lot near the State Fair’s administration building, with food initially distributed at a local Friday farmers market. What began as a creative experiment in urban agriculture soon demonstrated the potential to become something much bigger. Over the following decade, those

first planting boxes evolved into an innovative agricultural operation incorporating planting beds and hydroponic growing systems within Fair Park, including the Errol McKoy Greenhouse on the Midway. The Farms have grown everything from leafy greens and herbs to cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini and other fresh produce. But the true measure of the harvest isn’t what stays inside the greenhouse. It’s what leaves it.

GROWING FOOD TO GIVE AWAY

Produce grown by Big Tex Urban Farms is donated to organizations working to

address hunger and encourage healthier lifestyles in the surrounding community. The program makes recurring donations to nonprofit and community partners serving the South Dallas and Fair Park area, helping put locally grown fruits and vegetables into the hands of neighbors who can benefit from them most. Those relationships are particularly meaningful in the communities where convenient access to affordable fresh food can be limited. Instead of simply recognizing the problem, Big Tex Urban Farms created a system that uses resources that are already available at Fair Park— land, agricultural knowledge, partnerships and people—to become part of a solution. And the impact has grown dramatically. In 2022, the Farms celebrated reaching its goal of donating one million servings of fresh produce. By the end of 2025, that number doubled. As Big Tex Urban Farms marked its 10th anniversary in 2026, the Fair announced the initiative surpassed 2 million servings of fresh fruits and vegetables donated to South Dallas families experiencing food insecurity since the program began. Two million servings represents far more than an agricultural milestone. Each harvest becomes fresh food on someone’s table— and each donation strengthens a network of organizations already doing important work throughout the community.

INNOVATION IN THE HEART OF THE CITY

Big Tex Urban Farms is also proving that agriculture doesn’t have to look the way it once did. Its location in the middle of Dallas makes the program a living example of what urban agriculture can accomplish. Hydroponic systems allow plants to grow

efficiently without traditional fields, while the greenhouse provides an environment for year-round production. Over time, the Farms have become what the State Fair describes as an “innovation destination,” drawing interest in its sustainable urban farming model. During the annual Fair, that innovation becomes part of the visitor experience through the Innovations in Agriculture exhibit. But education extends beyond fair season. Big Tex Urban Farms provides hands-on learning opportunities for students, volunteers and community members all year. Its educational efforts include engaging STEM experiences for local high school students through an innovative greenhouse cohort program, connecting agriculture with science, technology and the possibilities of future careers. The result is a program that doesn’t simply grow vegetables. It grows knowledge.

CULTIVATING COMMUNITY

Perhaps the most important element of Big Tex Urban Farms is collaboration. The Farms’ mission includes investing financial and human capital in neighborhoods and businesses surrounding Fair Park, connecting organizations involved in food and hunger relief, and providing fresh produce to groups focused on nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Recurring donation partners listed currently by the State Fair include Jubilee Park, Restorative Farms, The Oak Cliff Veggie Project, T.R. Hoover Community Development Corporation and the Baylor Scott & White Health and Wellness Institute at the Juanita J. Craft Recreation Center, among others. That collaborative approach allows the produce grown at Fair Park to

travel farther and reach people through organizations that already understand the neighborhoods they serve. Volunteers also become part of the story. By offering opportunities for people to work with the Farms firsthand, Big Tex Urban Farms turns community service into something tangible—planting, growing, harvesting and helping provide food for a neighbor.

A LEGACY THAT KEEPS GROWING

For many Texans, the State Fair will always mean tradition—the first glimpse of Big Tex, a ride on the Texas Star, livestock shows, college football and indulgence in something deliciously fried. But its nonprofit mission reveals another side of that familiar Texas institution. Big Tex Urban Farms demonstrates what can happen when an organization looks beyond a single event and asks how its resources can serve a greater purpose all year. A project that began with 100 raised planters has grown into a sophisticated urban agriculture initiative responsible for more than 2 million servings of donated produce—and its work continues with every new planting. Here, juicy peaches are paired with melty brie cheese, a bit of honey, a dash of cinnamon and fresh thyme. And, I don’t feel dramatic telling you this dish is quite literally divine. You can cook this on the grill, in the oven or on the stove with a lid! Keep an eye on it and pull it out when brie is perfectly melty and peaches have transformed. INGREDIENTS 1 wheel brie 3 peaches 1-2 Tbsp honey Dash of cinnamon Optional: Honeycomb 1 Tbsp pecans Fresh thyme
