CharlesIves(1874-1954)wasanAmericanmodernistcomposerwhosemusicwaslargelyignoredduringhis life,asmanyofhisunperformedworksonlygainedrenownonlyafterhisdeath.Ivescombinedthe Americanpopularmusicandchurch-musictraditionsofhisyouthwithEuropeanartmusicandwasamong thefirstcomposerstoengageinasystematicprogramofexperimentalmusic,usingmusicaltechniques includingpolytonality,polyrhythm,toneclusters,aleatoricelements,andquartertonesHisstyle foreshadowedmanymusicalinnovationsofthe20thcenturyHesustainedaremarkablysuccessfulcareer asaninsurancesalesmanyetcontinuedtobeaprolificcomposerWrittenin1902duringhistenureas organistattheCentralPresbyterianChurchinNYC,thispreludewasscoredfororganandeithervocal chorusorfourtrombones.ThetitulartextisbasedonthefamiliarpassagefromtheBookofGenesis. Pealingdissonancesandharmonicclusterscombinetocreateauniquecanvasofprogressionsandcolor, whichgraduallywendtheirwaybacktoopenoctavesandfifths.Theworkevokesthedramaofprimordial lightemergingfromdarkness.

“MarchSinistra”wascommissionedbytheRochester,NY-basedHohenfelsTromboneQuartetinthe springof2024.Thepieceblendselementsofwesternclassical,jazz,andpopmusicintoacompact showpiecefeaturingamilitaristicostinatoandvirtuosicstatementsfromeachplayer.Thetitlecomesfrom Latinfor“thelefthand,”areferencetothecommissioningensemblewhichconsistsoffoursouthpaws EstoniancomposerArvoPärthasworkedinaminimaliststylesincethe1970’s,employinghisownunique compositionaltechnique:tintinnabuliThissimplestylewasinfluencedbythecomposer'smystical experienceswithchantmusicMusically,Pärt'stintinnabularmusicischaracterizedbytwotypesofvoice: onearpeggiatesthetonictriad,whiletheothermovesdiatonicallyinstepwisemotionHisworksareoften characterizedasslowandmeditative“Annumperannum”wascommissionedin1980bythe Südwestrunfunk(broadcastcorporation)inGermany,celebratingthe900thanniversaryoftheCathedralin Speyer.ThepiecewaspremieredbycathedralorganistLeoKrämer.Thecomposerwrites:“Thepiece consistsoffivesections(variationsonasequentiallychangingcantusfirmus),anintroductionandacoda.
