CharlesIves(1874-1954)wasanAmericanmodernistcomposerwhosemusicwaslargelyignoredduringhis life,asmanyofhisunperformedworksonlygainedrenownonlyafterhisdeath.Ivescombinedthe Americanpopularmusicandchurch-musictraditionsofhisyouthwithEuropeanartmusicandwasamong thefirstcomposerstoengageinasystematicprogramofexperimentalmusic,usingmusicaltechniques includingpolytonality,polyrhythm,toneclusters,aleatoricelements,andquartertonesHisstyle foreshadowedmanymusicalinnovationsofthe20thcenturyHesustainedaremarkablysuccessfulcareer asaninsurancesalesmanyetcontinuedtobeaprolificcomposerWrittenin1902duringhistenureas organistattheCentralPresbyterianChurchinNYC,thispreludewasscoredfororganandeithervocal chorusorfourtrombones.ThetitulartextisbasedonthefamiliarpassagefromtheBookofGenesis. Pealingdissonancesandharmonicclusterscombinetocreateauniquecanvasofprogressionsandcolor, whichgraduallywendtheirwaybacktoopenoctavesandfifths.Theworkevokesthedramaofprimordial lightemergingfromdarkness.

“MarchSinistra”wascommissionedbytheRochester,NY-basedHohenfelsTromboneQuartetinthe springof2024.Thepieceblendselementsofwesternclassical,jazz,andpopmusicintoacompact showpiecefeaturingamilitaristicostinatoandvirtuosicstatementsfromeachplayer.Thetitlecomesfrom Latinfor“thelefthand,”areferencetothecommissioningensemblewhichconsistsoffoursouthpaws EstoniancomposerArvoPärthasworkedinaminimaliststylesincethe1970’s,employinghisownunique compositionaltechnique:tintinnabuliThissimplestylewasinfluencedbythecomposer'smystical experienceswithchantmusicMusically,Pärt'stintinnabularmusicischaracterizedbytwotypesofvoice: onearpeggiatesthetonictriad,whiletheothermovesdiatonicallyinstepwisemotionHisworksareoften characterizedasslowandmeditative“Annumperannum”wascommissionedin1980bythe Südwestrunfunk(broadcastcorporation)inGermany,celebratingthe900thanniversaryoftheCathedralin Speyer.ThepiecewaspremieredbycathedralorganistLeoKrämer.Thecomposerwrites:“Thepiece consistsoffivesections(variationsonasequentiallychangingcantusfirmus),anintroductionandacoda. EachvariationhasoneofthelettersK–G–C–S–A,theinitialsofthefivesectionsoftheordinary[mass] (Kyrie,Gloria,Credo,Sanctus,AgnusDei).Theysymbolizethemass,which“annumperannum”(yearby

Hispiecebeginswithamelodyplayedintwovoicesinthepedal.Developingslowly,itmovestotheleft handforthemiddleportionofthework,returningtothepedalsattherecapitulation,nowahalf-steplower. SalvatoreSciarratta(b1996)isanItaliantrombonist,euphoniumplayer,andcomposerIn2018he obtainedadegreefromtheAlessandroScarlattiConservatoryinPalermoandhasstudiedchambermusic attheISSMArturoToscaniniRiberaSciarrattahaswrittenandarrangedmusicfororchestras,windbands, bigbands,chamberensembles,andpopbandsHismulti-facetedperformingcareerisbasedinSicily, wherehehasrecordedwiththerockbandSikaniaHiscomposition“Sicilianomedio”wonthegroupthe ACEP/UNEMIAspecialawardatthenationalMusicacontrolemafiacontestin2019.Hehasreceivedother commissionsandistheauthorofatrombonemethodbook.BrightCallreceivedthe1stPrizeatthe2021 BritishTrombonistSociety’sComposers’Competition.Thesimplestructureoftheworkincludesmodal interchangesandsolemn,flowingmelodiclines.Thecomposerindicatesthatthetitleofthisworkrefersto “aninvitationtoreason”.

RenownedHungarian-Germancomposer,musictheorist,andorganistZsoltGárdonyi(b.1946)hasbeen recognizedforhiscontributionsinthefieldofchurchmusic,aswellasforhisworkasaperformerand teacher.GárdonyibasedhisFantasieona16th-centurymelodythatremainsoneofthemostbeloved songsofpraiseintheHungarianProtestanttraditionThehymn’stextisasongofthanksgiving,expressing gratitudeandtrustinGodGárdonyi’streatmentpresentsaninstrumentaldialoguebetweenthevirtuosic organpartandthetrombonequartetAlternatingbetweenchorale-liketexturesandquasi-improvisatory interludes,itculminatesinanexhilaratingandtriumphantstatementofthehymntune.In2014,the HohenfelsTromboneQuartethadthehonorofpresentingthisworkattheWürzburgCathedral(Germany) withthecomposerinattendance.OrganistAmandaR.MoleandtheHohenfelsTromboneQuartethave alsorecordedFantasieontheiralbum,“SoundandResound.”
