POLISHED MAN GIVES A VOICE TO THE VOICELESS Not for profit organisation YGAP is standing up to end violence against children with the launch of its 2018 Polished Man campaign. The initiative calls on Australians to paint one nail to represent the one child who dies every five minutes as a result of violence.

quired child protection services, which is a very small drop compared to 2016.

Child abuse, neglect and family violence robs children of their childhoods and tragically, 1 in 8 Australian children report experiencing physical or sexual abuse before the age of 152.

In 2017, the Polished Man campaign raised $1.65 million with the help of over 10,271 Polished Men and Women.

Polished Man Co-Founder and Campaign Manger, Kylie Wallace said, “The number of Australian children experiencing physical or sexual abuse is appalling. Last year 1 in 32 children re-

“Violence against children needs to end and that’s why we’re calling on Australia to join the fight and start a conversation by painting one nail during October.”

Supported by ambassadors including Vance Joy, Tommy Little, Olympia Valance, Gyton Grantly, Darren Palmer and other leaders, personalities and individuals, this year’s campaign aims to raise even

more than last year and achieve 20,000 sign ups through the month of October. “Throughout October, I’ll be painting one nail to generate awareness and support Polished Man. If this helps to drive people to sign-up and donate, I know I’ve contributed to helping end violence against children,” said Vance Joy. 95 percent of all victims of violence in Australia report the perpetrator being male4, but Polished Man is not about pointing the finger. It’s about empowerment, eliciting a conversation and celebrating the men and women who speak up and take action.

Now in its fifth year, the campaign is encouraging adults to step out of their comfort zone and also have their fingernail painted by kids to encourage conversation across all ages. All funds raised through Polished Man are channelled into trauma recovery and trauma prevention programs for children who have suffered or are at risk of suffering violence globally.

EXOTIC FOOD LOVER?

Imagine a mix of 30% Anthony Bourdain (RIP) and his amazing zest for Global food adventures, 30% Chef Francis Mallmann and his primal approach to cooking, and 40% Viking. Add a touch of Broadway = Meet the Berserker Chef!

The Berserker Chef grew up as a real Viking and has traveled thru 50+ countries and lived in many. The Berserker Chef is a digital disruptor executive during the day and Underground Chef at night. During his Global travel’s the chef has tested and tasted his way to a menu – The Berserker Menu - consisting of the best cuts from around the World. What is a Berserker? The berserkers (the navy seals of the Viking warriors) would feast before heading into battle. They drank mead and ate magic mushrooms and got high before they geared up for battle. The mushrooms the berserkers ate had

psychedelic compounds so they imagined they literally transformed into a wolf or bear. They would howl and roar as they fought. This is how they wanted to go to Valhalla, if that was their final path. It was Victory or Valhalla, nothing in between. As bone marrow is a unique dish, “B2 Berserker Bone marrow” seemed like an appropriate name! The rest of the Berserker Menu includes exotic cuts from around the Globe like: Spanish iberico pork, Brazilian pichana and Patagonian toothfish and the finale – Japanese Wagyu - served by the appropriately dressed Japanese warrior O-ren Ishii.

The Berserker Chef incorporate all these ingredients presented in a 4 hour exotic dining experience at your private home in the New York area or at his private home. Says the Berserker Chef: “Combined with my passion for innovation, user experience, prototyping and building proof of concepts (POC), I end up testing a lot, whether it’s in an executive innovation session in a boardroom during the day or cooking with ingredients from around the World on the weekends. Using human centered design thinking to create a dining experience is a whole new approach to dining. I want the guest to have a 360 degrees panoramic experience, engaging all senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell, taste and an overall feeling of awesomeness.” The way to view this event is to think about it as a hybrid between a great dinner and a Broadway show. Let’s just say there is fire and fury included! beserkerchef.com

THE TIGER EXP

PRESS

Global tiger conservation charity initiative, Save Wild Tigers, are partnering with the iconic Eastern & Oriental Express to launch the ‘Tiger Express’ - raising awareness of the plight of the world’s last remaining & critically endangered wild tigers. To mark the occasion, a selection of Save Wild Tigers’ Ambassador’s & Personalities will be helping to spread the message globally. Renowned British /Chinese pop artist, Jacky Tsai – the name behind Alexander McQueen’s famous floral skull – will provide a visual reminder throughout Asia by curating two of the train’s external carriages with a tiger inspired art work being unveiled in Bangkok ahead of the journey. Whilst on board, Ping Coombes MasterChef UK 2014 champion & Save Wild Tigers’ ambassador will be cooking up a storm for guests. Additionally joining the passengers in support of Save Wild Tigers will be British fashion designer Kim Jones (Global artistic director Dior men’s fashion), Victoria TangOwen (Creative Director of Shanghai Tang - the iconic lifestyle brand founded by her late father, renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist Sir David Tang), All Saints singer Melanie Blatt and actress and Save Wild Tigers ambassador Jaime Winstone. Simon Clinton founder of Save Wild Tigers - “The most iconic of cats supported by the most iconic on the catwalk is a testament to its importance as a species. Generating support for wild tigers from such high profile global stars reminds us all how special wild Tigers are and why it’s essential we collectively all do our best to protect them from extinction.” Melanie Blatt - “We need to urgently inspire my generation to act now to save this majestic species or risk certain extinc-

tion for future generations – we just can’t allow this to happen” Kim Jones - “This magnificent creature has been an influence to the artistic world for centuries. We can’t let it disappear forever without a fight. Delighted to join Save Wild Tigers on this stunning trip to remind us how important wild tigers are for this planet.” Jaime Winstone - “From photographic success at London’s Royal Albert Hall, to a stunning gala dinner in KL and now joining the Tiger Express on this trip of a lifetime - Save Wild Tigers never fails to deliver. Really excited to continue with their creative campaign across the globe to spread the tiger message.” Victoria Tang-Owen - ‘Participating in charity work has always been important to my family. When it comes to the plight of the tiger and endangered species, I particularly care about what my generation can do to ensure my son and generations to follow can experience a diverse and cared for natural world. ’ The ‘Tiger Express’ The stunning five -night itinerary ( Sept 7- Sept 12 2019) will see guests travel in luxury from Bangkok to Singapore through historic tiger territories in Thailand and Malaysia with a stay at the 5 star Siam Hotel Bangkok and culminating with an exclusive Tiger reception and overnight stay at the iconic Raffles Hotel in Singapore included in the package. During the journey, guests will embark on several excursions including a guided visit to the River Kwai Bridge and a tour of Kuala Kangsar. Additionally SWT ambassador & UK Master Chef Winner Ping Coombes will be on board creating a very special menu for passengers

WILD TIGERS TODAY?

The wild tiger has huge cultural and historical significance throughout Asia but it is a littleknown fact that worldwide tiger numbers are now at critical levels with only 3,800 tigers left in the wild globally & few as 400 in Thailand & Malaysia combined. These 3,800 remaining wild tigers are for the most part spread across Indian sub-continent, Asia & Russia but within a decade based on current rates of decline could be completely extinct. This special journey aims to raise awareness of their plight.

TIME CRITICAL:

Simon Clinton, Founder, Save Wild Tigers comments, “With potentially as few as 10 years left to save this iconic species from extinction, the clock really is ticking. We are really proud & grateful to be working with the Eastern & Oriental Express and our Hotel partners Raffles and The Siam once again in providing passengers a chance to experience of a lifetime, for what surely must be the cause of a lifetime. Profits from our all of our campaigns go towards creating global awareness campaigns for the cause & funding targeted tiger conservation projects.” “It is a sad fact that today there are more tigers in captivity than there are in the wild, our train travels through the heart of the historic tiger territories in Malaysia and Thailand and we are proud to lend our support to this worthwhile cause. We find that our guests are increasingly looking to give back to have an impact on the places they are visiting in a bid to travel more consciously. Following the success of the last ‘Tiger Express’ we are very excited to run this journey again to help spread the message worldwide” said Gary Franklin, Vice President, Trains & Cruises, Belmond.

INTERNATIONAL PROFILE

Anne Bowen By Christian Shane

Where are you from originally and how did you get involved in fashion? Born in upstate NY. I was raised in Florida. I started designing, draping and making my own patterns with my mother at a very young age. My mother told me I was a fabric snob from birth.

NOMAD VII - what does it mean to you? How did you come up the name of the brand? NOMAD VII X ANNE BOWEN represents our individual global experiences. It is an elevated, contemporary

designer

collection

featuring unique pieces in each capsule inspired by our journey. The tire tread symbol represents our peregrinations.

MODEL is wearing a beaded lace bomber and jogger with Swarovski crystals, and a beaded lace bralette.

You’ve mentioned your father, who served in the US Airforce, what inspiration has he given you? What keeps you motivated during challenging times? My father was in the US Air Force. When I was a baby apparently I liked to answer the dedicated phone from the Air Force base, which was a hotline to reach him in emergencies. He was part of a generation of men who lived in integrity.

What’s the typical day for Anne Bowen? No day is just like the other. We are always pushing forward and seeking inspiration. My associate Alexandra Turkmen and I work through most days with humor, sarcasm and laughter all while creating a new type of brand. I am an animal advocate. I have personally produced fundraisers to help raise awareness that greyhounds make great pets as well and money to help the rescue organizations. Additionally, we are a supporter of Veterans Empowered to Protect African Wildlife.

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 20) Relationships suddenly seem to improve, but it is up to you to help repair any frayed connections and salve any bruised egos. Single Aries find new and lucky ways to seek, woo and conquer - committed ones can revive or revise. Whatever you decide to do, make sure that the end result is something and someone you can live with - including yourself.

take things to the extreme -on second thought, go for it!

TAURUS (APRIL 21 - MAY 21) This is no time to be lazy! You easily pour on the energy to get in shape - even a meager effort at the gym pays a big reward. Perhaps you can huff and puff around a randy band of mega-hunks or hunkettes to increase the oomph? Increase is your middle name now, so be extra careful in the dessert department unless, of course, you happen to be the dessert!

LEO (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23) You are catapulted into far reaching adventures. Leos are tempted to go global in any way they can, either by travel, or by cyberspace. Whatever you decide to do, this is the time to get out of your usual skin and explore parts unknown with some wild, exotic stranger!

GEMINI (MAY 22 - JUNE 21) How much fun can a Gemini have? You will be surprised at your increased capacity for all sorts of delightful pastimes. Your luck is also highlighted, so take a calculated risk and see what happens. Eat, drink and be merry, but try to take things in careful moderation. You now have a tendency to

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 23) If the four walls have been closing in on you, expect a major change now. Will you move, or simply change, the dynamic of your current personal space? Cancers are inspired to change their surroundings from tip to top. What changes can you concoct?

VIRGO (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23) Even coy Virgos cannot help but feel feisty. Your engine is revved and you quickly pull into overdrive. What can you do to fill your tank? You better hurry up with some creative solutions! Your racing desires need to get out of the starting gate and rev around the curves. Don’t run out of gas before you reach the finish line.

HOROS

SCOPES

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23) You have that popularity - all eyes are upon you and you have nothing to fear by strutting your stuff. People you meet now will prove to be valuable contacts for future endeavors so don’t hide, Libra - the scene is boiling hot and you sizzle! Jump into the social stew and get on the tasting menu.

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 23 JANUARY 20) Doors open and you can jump in and manifest your corporate destiny. Set your sights on your target! Your rocket is launched, your engine is on overdrive and your wingtips take off into the stratosphere. Capricorns are given more than a few opportunities to catch the eye of the senior staff, and become the next golden child. Will you aspire, or retire?

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22)

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21 - FEBRU-

Luck pops out of nowhere and saves you from your risky temptations. Scorpios have a guardian angel with a Sherman tank now. Evildoers are crushed and their nasty designs, dashed. So, how can you best thank the heavens for all this good karma? By getting involved in worthy charitable efforts and causes, of course! Haste makes waste.

ARY 19)

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 23 DECEMBER 22) Make your best social gestures this week - opportunities widen and your dance card fills to capacity. The crowd demands your presence and Sagittarians should make good use of time. Soon you may overstep your bounds and wind up munching stale popcorn and binging on Netflix.

Anything you say now is not only heard, but also followed. Good thing too, Aquarius, you have been hampered by loose talk for a while. But, now your ideas are expansive, wise and earth shattering. Choose the time and place to unfurl your manifesto. Do it! PISCES (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20) Pisces suddenly feel flush when the cosmos opens the till. Financial problems suddenly become solvable and retirement is not as much of a mirage, as it once seemed. Put this lucky surge to work in making your money molehill into a huge mountain. That means, doing your fiscal homework and keeping your eye on the bottom line. Guaranteed you have some nice assets! Wink wink.

ADRENALINE AS AN ART FORM Pushing Lexus LC performance to its most extreme requires a fanatical belief in the power of engineering and craftsmanship. This has resulted in a completely revised chassis with a lower center of gravity. Engine components forged of titanium for greater strength. Laser welding for increased rigidity. Carbon fiber for lighter, yet stronger, body panels. Because if you want to craft extreme performance, you have to take extreme measures.
