We have a long tradition of sparking social innovation to find highly effective, sciencebased solutions to critical social problems. u Since its founding in 1934, the School has been deeply connected to the historical events of our time. We responded to economic upheaval in the 1930s with skilled welfare workers and administrators, then mobilized for war in the 1940s with a focus on medical social work. In the 1950s, we expanded our academic reach with doctoral and undergraduate programs.

And in the 1960s, once again, we responded to rapid social change with groundbreaking student and community outreach programs.

u The School’s academic direction shifted dramatically in the 1970s to evidence-based social work practice and use-inspired research. This triggered two decades of rigorous scholarship, breakthrough findings and increased recognition for a diverse faculty focused on culturally competent social work practice. u Today, the School is ranked among the top graduate schools of social work in the nation and continues to redefine what’s possible in tackling the toughest social issues of our day.

BREAKTHROUGH RESEARCH The School ranks among the highest in the nation of social work schools in terms of research funding and results and faculty publication rates. Our nine research units — focused on groundbreaking interventions for real-world problems ranging from health disparities to child welfare reform — provide rich opportunities for students at all degree levels to learn from innovative projects led by renowned social work scholars.
