August is a great time to be in the Hamptons. Summer is at its peak and the time is perfect to relax at the beach, or spend a day by the pool. I suggest unplugging from the digital world and let your real life unfold instead of spending your time on social media.

Wellness seems to be on everybody’s mind nowadays. Biking, yoga and getting exercise is at the forefront of my mind on the weekend. Spending time in the Hamptons and getting fit will make everything feel better. With many wellness spots scattered all over the Hamptons, it’s easy to find the perfect place to work out, meditate, cycle, or take a yoga class.

As the summer continues, so do the charity events. Recently, the Southampton Hospital had its annual charity gala and I believe it is one of the most worthwhile causes. If you missed it, you can still contribute at southamptonhospital.org Summer is going by quickly, and it’s time to spend some long weekends in the Hamptons.

Something about August always feels drenched in feeling. It’s that time of year when we are hyper aware of the season slowly slipping away, and we want to get everything we can out of it.

There is something exciting about approaching a day like you might a flattened tube of toothpaste. Attempting to squeeze out the last remnants of summer’s balmy days brings a heightened awareness — something I believe truly helps one relish the moment. Have you planned out every inch of your August weeks? Will you revisit your favorite restaurants or recreate any particularly fun dinner parties? What were the most meaningful moments for you this summer? For me, family time is what I enjoy most. Having so many loved ones visit us Out East this summer was definitely the highlight. And spending time with our dogs and contributing to animal charities always make me feel so happy. Animal Hope and Wellness is one of my favorite animal charities in the country. In the Hamptons, I remind people to visit Last Chance Animal Rescue in Southampton as well as ARF in East Hampton. The work both of these organizations do year round for animals is important and they need our support.

I hope your August is full of dusty orange sunsets and meaningful get-togethers.

I couldn’t think of a more appropriate cover model for our August Health & Beauty issue than this dynamic star who is releasing her innovative cookbook, Sasha In Good Taste on October 8th 2019. It was such a pleasure to work closely with this evolving actress who gives an incredibly candid and exclusive interview; the story she shares revolves around her life and career in Hollywood, health issues, and personal experience with bullying.

Sasha has an undeniable, effortless beauty, and her natural ability to relate to the camera is exquisitely unique. What is so unusual about this radiant star is her inner beauty: her incredible wisdom, insight on life, and understanding of controversial issues which most of us could only hope to obtain through life experience at twice her age. Needless to say, it is very unexpected, and quite admirable for her to have that type of acumen at the young age of 23.

D

o you suffer from shedding hair, breakage, or hair loss? Do you prefer hair and skincare products that are pure and chemical-free? This do-it-yourself hair mask fits the bill. Store-bought products never addressed my hair needs, so I went to my kitchen and began experimenting with natural ingredients.

I asked friends who were dedicated to using only natural hair products what they loved. And I did an ingredient search. After lots of combinations and raw eggs getting scrambled on my head from washing the mixture with hot water, I finally had a list of ingredients that worked.

Simply put all the ingredients into a small blender. Double the mixture if it doesn’t cover the blades, otherwise it will not mix properly. Blend on high until it is a light yellow color. Wash your hair first and squeeze out excess water. Massage the egg mask through your hair until you use all of it. Cover your head with plastic wrap for at least twenty minutes. I found if I had more time the results were better. My average time was one hour.

Rinse the hair mask thoroughly with cool water so that the eggs do not scramble! Shampoo your hair with a basic non-conditioning shampoo two to three times. Condition your hair as you normally would after shampooing.

Basically, this is a protein hair mask made from natural ingredients. To make it pure, use organic ingredients. After your first

application, you can expect a lot less shedding and breakage. Typically, the mask can be used once a month. In the beginning, if the shedding is more problematic, two times a month is okay, but only for a few months. Too much protein can exacerbate the shedding and breakage that you are trying to fix with the mask.

It’s true. Too often the practitioner takes a singular approach to treatment — over-reliance on one cosmetic procedure modality, whether injectables, surgery, lasers, or something else. Also, in many cases, due to the high cost of many devices and products used in cosmetic procedures, some practitioners may not have the devices and products necessary for providing a complete, natural-appearing aesthetic solution for their patients.

Tell us about your solution.

The solution to this problem is our trademarked STL Method, which stresses the importance of approaching every cosmetic concern with an effort to smooth and tighten the skin and underlying structures, and lift treated areas against gravity. To smooth-tightenlift the face, neck, or body we use a variety of techniques depending on a patient’s individual needs and the area being treated. For example, in one area, we may use a combination of lasers, injections, and creams; in another area, we may use ultrasound and radio frequency-based devices, threads, and growth factor injections. We have set recommendations that over a decade of experience have proven effective in specific cases, and we would love to discuss them with you.

Let’s focus on the face — when summer’s over that’s where a lot of people want to make some improvement.

Our goal for the face and neck is to smooth away fine lines, tighten the skin to make deep folds less apparent, and to lift the skin to

reveal the beauty of the normal contours of the jaw bone, chin, and cheeks.

We do this by: • erasing sun damage and building collagen and elastic tissue in the superficial skin; • building collagen in a deeper layer of connective tissue called the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system), producing a skin-tightening effect; • restoring volume to areas where it has been lost; and • lifting the skin against the muscles and bones beneath.

What does this involve?

First of all, everyone is different, but it’s possible that some combo may include a combination of fractional resurfacing lasers with or without microneedling, PRP injections, and Botox for muscleinduced wrinkles; generating broad swaths of new collagen across both the superficial skin layer and deeper collagen layers; and lifting the sagging tissue back into place.

So, what’s involved in smoothing?

The superficial skin is managed through a combination of fractional resurfacing lasers with or without microneedling, PRP injections, and Botox for muscle-induced wrinkles, all paired together with a good at-home skincare regimen that includes regular use of sunscreen, antioxidants, and skin brightening creams.

Let’s keep going — how about tightening?

To tighten the skin, we need to generate broad swaths of new collagen across both the superficial skin layer and deeper collagen layers. These deep layers of collagen are too deep to get to through the surface using lasers or microneedles. The way to get to these deeper layers is by using radio frequency or ultrasound wavelengths of energy. In our office we use both. The heat that is generated in the deeper skin safely stimulates collagen production uniformly over broad areas of skin, effectively shrinking skin that has been stretched out through aging and returning it closer to its natural size.

And last but not least, lifting?

hile it is entirely possible to get most nutrients from a balanced diet, the standard American diet is seriously low in several important ones. It can be difficult to get adequate levels through food alone. As a holistic nutritionist, I know the most common nutrient deficiencies include omega-3, magnesium, and vitamin D. Even a person whose diet is replete with fruit and vegetables can be nutrient-deficient. Certain genetic variances hinder proper absorption. Persons with digestive issues, especially IBS and celiac disease, are at risk for a variety of nutritional deficiencies. Medications, including the birth control pill, can deplete you of certain vitamins.

And missing out on a key nutrient is easier than you may think. For example, few foods are rich in the important element iodine. Eating sources of it only occasionally risks iodine deficiency. Also, soil depletion diminishes nutrients in modern fruits and vegetables. Keep in mind also that we have increased nutrient needs at different times in our life cycle.

I RECOMMEND SUPPLEMENTS, AND BELOW ARE THINGS TO CONSIDER. Consult your doctor or nutrition practitioner to determine your supplement needs. A doctor who runs the right DNA and blood tests and also has a nutritionist or health coach on staff is your best bet.

Opt for medical grade or third party certified. Common third party testing certifications include ConsumerLab.com, NSF International, Informed-Choice, and US Pharmacopeia (USP). Some brands’ contents do not match their labeling or are inadequately potent. For example, some prenatal vitamins do not contain enough iodine. Please read labels carefully or have your doctor or nutritionist do this for you.

Order directly from a trusted company’s website. Amazon, for example, has some sellers that don’t have proper warehouse conditions.

The window is only about a year for probiotics, liquids, and oils. Be particularly careful with these.

Pay attention to the ingredients and labels. Read “other ingredients” at the bottom. Avoid ones with fillers, sugar, and artificial ingredients. To avoid toxic heavy metals and PCBs, look for oil from smaller fish such as sardines and anchovies. Natural supplements usually list food sources or are labeled 100% plant- or animal-based.

Supplements that are not natural or organic may list vitamins and minerals that are, in fact, fake.

Don’t go overboard. More is not better. Water-soluble vitamins (B vitamins and vitamin C) are excreted through urine; therefore, less likely to cause adverse reactions. However, taking more than 1,000 mg at a time can cause abdominal cramping and diarrhea. Fat-soluble nutrients (vitamins A, D, E, and K) aren’t excreted through your urine. Too much poses more of a risk, sometimes serious.

Follow the directions. Take the recommended dose and follow instructions about taking with or without food. If a probiotic label suggests refrigeration, do so.

Stop drinking the Kool-Aid. What works for Kim Kardashian, may not work for you. For example, those with a sensitive stomach may want to take time-released probiotics instead of the standard kind.

Proper storage trumps the expiration date. Expired vitamins or supplements are unlikely to cause harm. Although less potent, they could still be effective if they have been stored properly.

Supplements cannot take the place of the synergistic, naturally occurring health benefits from real foods that are rich in nutrients.

This American actress grew up in show business, and entertaining was indisputably in her blood. At age two, she began traveling back and forth from France to South Africa with her parents, professional acrobatic dancers and international performers. Pieterse was home schooled and first began modeling and acting in commercials at age four, then pursued theatrical work at age six after moving with her parents from her native town of Johannesberg, South Africa to Las Vegas. Not long after, the child actress relocated to California making her first appearance as Buffy on the WB comedy series Family Affair, a remake of the CBS sitcom Family Affair. Pieterse appeared in many films and television shows including one of her most notable roles as Andie, a young girl with terminal cancer, in the acclaimed drama House. She also starred in the Hallmark original film, Claire, with Valerie Bertinelli and in the Disney Channel Orignal Movie, Geek Charming playing Amy Loubalu.

On Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, Pieterse plays the grown-up version of Alison Dilaurentis who is trying to redeem herself while a faculty member at the prestigious Beacon Heights Univeristy, a place where students struggle with school related issues, deceitfulness and the horrific murder of a classmate. What has changed the most since Pieterse’s character transitioned from Pretty Little Liars into The Perfectionists?

“A lot of things!” Pieterse reveals. “For one, she’s not in high school anymore. Alison has evolved in a way that is a little unexpected for fans because she is trying to be a good person.

She has been bad for so long, and there were all these crazy things that she has done wrong, and she felt guilty; and that guilt has haunted her!”

Pieterse shares what she likes most about portraying the magnetic role of Alison DiLaurentis for so many years. “What has been so fun about Alison is that she has had such an interesting character arc. I have never been bored with her character, even after seven years. She has just done so many crazy things. I think its fun to play a character that is not one note. There have been a lot of changes in her life and its fun to play Alison in a different way and kind of reinvent her and find different layers.”

When asked about The Perfectionists’ valuable and thought provoking content involving suicide, bullying, coercion and manipulation and how it pertains to real life, the South-African native responds, “Beacon Heights is interesting because even though it’s a heightened reality, there are a lot of realistic qualities about it. The core is about teaching people and reminding them, “it’s okay to be yourself because when you try to be perfect, because it’s unobtainable, things go wrong.” I think it is kind of like that big brother who is watching you.

We deal with all of these crazy issues with social media today, and The Perfectionists definitely touches on that and obviously the idea of how much pressure we have to be perfect. These students go through a ton of issues that I think anybody can relate to. I think it’s really great that you can see yourself in at

least one character, and Alison sees herself in all three of them and she can’t help but get involved and try to fix them.”

The Hollywood actress is not only admired and loved for her acting, singing and other creative abilities, but also for advocating against bullying. Pieterse has become an inspiration and role model to millions of individuals around the world after responding to negative criticism from fans unhappy with the direction her character’s storyline was taking on The Perfectionists, and her sudden weight gain resulting from a hormonal imbalance. In an age where bullying is rampant on social media, we could all learn a lesson or two from Pieterse’s diplomacy as she replies to the trolling on Twitter and Instagram with kindness and compassion. “I think this is something that everyone goes through at some point in their lives. Everyone is bullied to some extent. I think what people can hopefully realize is that, it’s not personal; it’s stemming from something else.

Most bullies have something in their lives that’s really toxic for them, and they’re lashing out. It’s their way of controlling something in their life. It has to be so difficult to be so hateful all the time, and when you understand where they are coming from, I think it is a little bit easier to let it slide.”

One of the key reasons behind Pietrese’s desire to respond to fans on social media after receiving derogatory comments about her weight gain was to help them understand she suffers from the medical condition called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). The public watched as Pieterse grew up on Pretty Little Liars, so the natural progression of her life was documented every season; therefore she wanted to give fans an explanation to clear up any confusion surrounding this issue. “I was trying to handle it in my personal life, and I was equally confused as to why I was gaining all this weight. I eat healthy and I work out, and what I was doing didn’t reflect what was happening with my body. Everyone had questions, and I felt that I had to address them and show compassion and kindness. Anything hateful doesn’t solve the problem, and it doesn’t make it better; it makes people want to retaliate more.

I gave them an explanation, and it made me feel better and helped empower me too.”

Aside from being a role model and possessing countless artistic abilities, Pieterese has other amazing talents: cooking and entertaining. The dynamic star is getting ready to launch her latest project, an innovative cookbook, Sasha in Good Taste, on October 8th, 2019. In the book the actress shares some of her most innovative and exclusive recipes for cooking and baking as well as tips for inexpensive entertaining and do-ityourself projects. The revolutionary cook book contains ideas for tapas, desserts, cocktails, party planning and entertaining.

The actress reveals, “I think it’s hard for me to choose since they are all of my favorite entertaining recipes; there is something for everybody. I love my chocolate pudding because it is made with an avocado base, so you don’t have to feel as guilty for eating it. I love the jalapeno bites with brie or goat cheese.

I really wanted to make sure that they were something that anybody could do. It’s important for it to be stress free. I feel that everybody tenses up when they think about party planning and all of the things they have to do. It’s really possible to just enjoy the process and share time with the people that you love.”

So does Pretty Little Liars star spend any time off-camera entertaining co-star Janel Parish who plays Mona Vanderwaal on the Freeform spin-off series? “We have always gotten along and always been friends, but this is a whole new level. When we shot the pilot, we were both engaged and both got married right before we shot the first season. We have just grown as friends. We understand each other really well and have such a good chemistry on set. Off camera, Janel and I get along, and

our husbands do too. It’s really great to have that double date and to really be able to relax into that.”

As for as Pieterse sentiments on her lifelong career in entertainment she confesses, “What’s hard about Hollywood is that you grow up on camera, and I started Pretty Little Liars when I was 12. I have been blessed to have the career that I have had and it’s been a fun ride; it’s a different type of childhood, but I am glad that I had it. I think one of the biggest problems which parallels Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists is that we constantly try to be perfect. The truth is, we edit our lives on social media. We edit the way that we look. We only put things out that make us look better or that we feel is something that other people would like to see. All of those people that you admire on social media have all of the same types of problems as you do, and they are editing their lives just like you are. You shouldn’t hide your flaws. PETER & ABBIE MOLONEY THE NEW FAMILY IN THE WHITE HOUSE

Yes, since the early 1900s, Long Island has had its own spectacular “White House Farm.” It is located at 344 Middle Road in Bayport. This White House is filled with its own unique history, thriving and surviving through highs and lows, from when it was first built before 1880 to today. Let’s take a tour.

The current owners are Peter and Abbie Moloney. Peter and his brother, Daniel, are owners of Moloney Family Funeral Homes, Inc. This Long Island–based company is one of the leading and most innovative organizations in the industry. The journey that connected Peter and Abbie to the White House in Bayport is fascinating. Here are a few, abridged, stops along the way.

The original house at 344 Middle Road was built by Captain Henry Richmond and his wife. Caroline, as a country home, which they named “Maplewood.” Their permanent residence was in Philadelphia. Captain Henry was born in 1836 in Taunton, Masschusetts, and was a descendant of the Colonial New England Richmond family. His 1894 obituary in the New

York Sun reported that he and his father ventured to California as gold rush ’49ers. Later, Henry became a prominent shipping merchant in trade with China. In 1900, six years after the captain’s death, the Patchogue Advance reported: “No place in the village of Bayport attracts more traveling public than the beautiful country home of Mrs. C. Richmond…everything about the place seems to possess an inviting air.”

Mrs. Richmond died sometime after 1900 and the property of more than 10 acres was sold to John J. Ascher, a prominent Manhattan real estate broker. Ascher completely renovated the house beyond recognition, and renamed the property “White House Farm.” During the 1920s, under Ascher, the estate bore two signs, “Restaurant & Grill” and “Over Night Guests.” The house served as a rest stop for New York socialites as they travelled to vacation homes and resorts in the Hamptons.

In the 1940s, the property was subdivided. Today’s White House sits on Middle Road, on an acre and a quarter of land.

the street and in front of the house. Time had taken a serious toll on the house and property. It certainly had lost its curbside appeal. Inspired by fate, or fantasy, they investigated. What they saw was shocking. A grand home with the classic bones and features from the 1880s still in place, but completely obscured and unappreciated.

Peter is a life-long Long Islander who was raised in Ronkonkoma with his brother, Daniel. Abbie is from Arkansas. Her dad was in real estate and construction. She noted that growing up, she moved often, collecting more addresses than favorite CDs. For 15 years, Peter and Abbie enjoyed a comfortable ranch-style home in Patchogue, where they were raising their four children. Their next moves, they thought, were a vacation home and to downsize as the kids start moving off to college.

Peter and Abbie have vivid memories of that night’s dinner, but not of what they ate or drank. Their conversation showed their clear appreciation of real estate and what they imagined for White House Farm. And, the price of the house was attractive. “Could there really be something here?” they wondered.

As they ate and talked, they had flashes of vision that took them to thoughts of “Could we? Should we?” However, after a good night’s sleep, the magic was gone. “Why would we want to take on such a monumental task,” they agreed. Nevermind.

They turned their attention to some things they wanted to do in their own home. But as they did, the whisper of White House Farm became a roar. “What if we did everything we want to do to the house in Bayport?” The rest, yes, is history.

Peter and Abbie closed on White House Farm in late 2015 and moved in on November 3, 2016. What they accomplished in a year was nothing less than remarkable.

In the mid-1960s, the new owner, Michael Signorelli, a wellknown talent and international personality, took over White House Farm. “Maestro,” as he was known professionally and locally, was an Italian-style tenor. During his career, he was the lead tenor with the Chicago Opera Company, and later, a soloist at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for 14 years. He and his wife, Jeanne, loved Bayport and were warmly welcomed by the community. While here, he founded the Lyric Opera Company of Long Island. In October of 2004, the Maestro died, but Mrs. Signorelli and her daughter continued to live in the house for more than a decade and continued to teach aspiring singers the bel-canto style of music the Maestro had perfected. When the Moloneys bought the house, there were twelve pianos inside!

One late-afternoon in the early fall of 2015, the Moloneys were on their way to dinner and took note of a “For Sale” sign outside a property they had never noticed before. White House Farm was well hidden by high, unkept bushes close to SocialLifeMagazine.com

First, they agreed on what they wanted to do to their new home. It was a grand classic structure, and they pledged to keep it as such. At the same time, they wanted to make it look modern, elegantly clutter-free inside and out, environmentally friendly, and high tech. Part of this pledge included keeping everything they could from the 1880s and early 1900s. The hardwood floors are original as are the wall and window moldings, built-in cabinetry, mantles, and fireplaces. The dining room’s original ceiling is covered in intricate coffered molding and leather decorated with tooled patterns, and the room’s bookcases are from France and date to the Gilded Age. The workmanship that went into the White House is artisanry that has long been lost but will be forever treasured.

Peter and Abbie were their own team to restore and renovate 5,400 square feet of living space, which included six fireplaces, plus a resort-like patio, pool, and formal backyard and grounds.

Sure, they hired a top architect, Al Sutton, from AM Sutton Associates, and a construction consultant, Tom Kraebel, to help with planning and technical details. However, the general contractor was Peter, and the design visionary was Abbie. Peter looked over everything, from having the power and utility

lines buried to the installation of underground wells to ensure there would be no flooding from rain and water run-off. One important feature of the house is something that would be noticeable only if it were wrong. The outside walls’ side shingles are set at 10-inch reveals. Customary in the 1920s, but different from the 6-inch or 8-inch reveals used today. In fact, getting the material to make the shingles properly required a search that took Peter to a Canadian source. And, to get the work done on time, he hired and scheduled a separate crew of independent carpenters.

Abbie’s natural design and decorating sense brought everything together with an elegant flow and symmetry. From furniture and accent pieces to lights and colors, a unique individual style makes everyone feel comfortable in a formal home. Their art is interesting and uplifting, and the collection now features several paintings by their eldest daughter, Paige. Abbie also does all the design and decorating for the Moloney Family Funeral Homes business.

than 20 years. Jim commented, “What Peter and Abbie accomplished in less than a year with their new home is simply amazing, but I’m not surprised. I’ve been privileged to work with the Moloney family for a very long time and have seen them grow their business from two funeral homes to seven, and uniquely introduce new services and solutions to the industry on Long Island. They are smart, know how to make a plan, work hard, and execute.”

Soon after moving into their White House, the Moloneys made their home available to the community and causerelated events. Peter is on the board of the Long Island Community Hospital, and one of his first events brought together the management and board of the hospital so they could get to know one another better. The Moloneys have also staged other gatherings for the Heritage Society and the Bayport community, with more on the horizon.

Looking at the Moloneys’ White House now, one can hear an echo from 1900… “No place in the village of Bayport attracts more traveling public than this beautiful country home… everything about the place seems to possess an inviting air.”

HALF HOLLOW HILLS VS. AUTISM ONE GOAL . . . ONE DREAM

A

s a high school freshman, Drew Quinto had a lot on his mind.

Different classes, new teachers, mingling with old friends, meeting new acquaintances, and playing lacrosse. Yet, he always made time to focus on Corey, his older brother, who has autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

April is Autism Awareness Month. During that month in 2012, Drew started a nonprofit foundation — Hills vs. Autism — to celebrate Corey, whom he considers a role model and hero.

“Growing up with an older brother who struggled with a developmental disability,” recalled Drew, “truly opened my eyes and made me realize that there was a need for socialization programs in the community for children and young adults with ASD.” ASD is a developmental brain disorder caused by a combination of genes and environmental influences. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by communication difficulties, social and behavioral challenges, and sometimes repetitive behaviors. An estimated one in 68 children in the U.S. is on the autism spectrum.

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT Drew’s commitment to “One Goal . . .One Dream” to help make a difference for kids and young adults with autism immediately was embraced by his parents, Allison and Paul, along with the Half Hollow Hills Central School District in Dix Hills, Long Island. The district and the high school administration are committed to excellence, community, education, athletics, and charity.

“Drew reflected on the socialization void within the community and decided to start the foundation that would allow us to underwrite grants and fund appropriate programs for children and young adults with ASD,” said Allison. “My husband and I are firm believers in paying it forward, and we have taught our sons the importance of giving back to our community.”

One of the most successful fund-raising initiatives is the annual Hills vs. Autism lacrosse tournament. As many as 20 Long Island teams participate each July in the day-long event that is capped by the alumni game between the Half Hollow Hills East Thunderbirds and Social Life



the Half Hollow Hills West Colts.

Players, coaches, referees, organizers, and fans braved excessive heat and storms to participate in this year’s tournament. Athletes pledged donations and each player also contributed $30 to participate in the program. Jerseys and shirts were provided by the Hills East alumni association, and about 50 referees donated their time to officiate the games. The program has raised more than half a million dollars.

SUPPORT FROM A LACROSSE BENEFACTOR James C. Metzger, a Hills East alumnus and a three-sport awardwinning player during the 1970s, was invited to participate in this year’s program. Metzger is the founder and CEO of The Whitmore Group, a Garden City–based insurance brokerage firm. He supports high school lacrosse programs across Long Island, including the Hills East program, leadership awards for the Nassau County championship games, and most valuable player awards for the Long Island championship games. Metzger also has been instrumental in bringing the state lacrosse championships to Long Island. The 2020, 2021, and 2022 games will be played at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium.

During halftime of the game between Thunderbirds and Colts alumni, Metzger presented the Colts’ Christian Mulé with the first annual James C. Metzger Mark of Excellence Alumni Cup. The award was established to honor outstanding accomplishments on and off the lacrosse field by a Half Hollow Hills East or Half Hollow Hills West player. Future awards will be presented at the alumni game as part of the Hills vs. Autism program.

Mulé scored 105 points as a junior, 103 points as a senior, and 331 for his high school career. He set district records that included breaking Metzger’s scoring record for points in a season (102 points in 1977), which had stood for more than 40 years. Mulé has committed to play lacrosse at Duke University.

DOING GREAT THINGS “I didn’t know back in 2012 what an impact the foundation would make,” said Drew. “I feel truly blessed to be able to fund grants and celebrate all individuals and make a positive change in their lives. Corey has taught me that anything is possible and any goal is achievable.

He is a source of inspiration and I am so proud of all his accomplishments.”

Corey, by the way, has exceeded every stereotype associated with autism. He graduated from SUNY Purchase with a 4.0 grade average, lives on his own in Manhattan, takes care of his personal needs, has a driver’s license, and balances his checkbook.

None of this is a surprise to anyone who knows Corey. The quote that appears with his graduation picture in the Hills East yearbook is “Don’t tell me I can’t do it, don’t tell me it can’t be done.” Corey lives his life by these words and he has taught his brother and many others the true meaning of perseverance. u Learn more about Hills vs. Autism at hillsvsautism.org.

I’ve been involved with The New York Women’s Foundation for a long time. Tell our readers what makes it so special.

The New York Women’s Foundation is a home for people’s contributions, time, strength, and hopes for the future. The foundation was founded by pioneering women of wealth who believed that coming together with others from all backgrounds and means to give and take action would yield powerful results. And they were right. Over thirty-two years we have awarded $88 million to some 400 grantee partner organizations in New York City and beyond. More than 80 percent of the organizations we have funded are still thriving. We look to community leaders for the best solutions to the challenges their communities face. They have the best insight. What we bring is investment in their organizations, as well as in the leaders themselves, because, at the end of the day, we are investing in people.

We are true to our founding ideals, thanks to the generosity and partnership of women like you — and men as well of course! We have the honor of working with passionate supporters to create a vibrant future for all women in New York City and in doing so, we create a better city for all of us.

I know the foundation works on many aspects of women’s lives, but one central issue is economic opportunity.

Tell us more about that facet of the work.

In New York City, one in four women and girls is living in poverty. Yet, less than seven percent of philanthropic funding from foundations goes to issues specific to women and girls.

Implementing meaningful change in the lives of under-invested women and families involves building pathways to economic security and transforming systems and policies to be economically just. We invest in organizations and programs that increase job opportunities and paths to business ownership; fight for equal pay and family-friendly workplace laws; strengthen access to quality childcare; and address barriers to employment, such as housing insecurity, a history of incarceration, and inadequate healthcare.

The foundation also invests in new-economy approaches, such as worker co-ops, community land ownership, and public banking.

ABOUT JEAN SHAFIROFF Jean Shafiroff, philanthropist, humanitarian, activist, and author of the book Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give, is a volunteer leader of several charitable causes. She serves on the boards of eight charities: Southampton Hospital Association, NYC Mission Society, French Heritage Society, Couture Council, Jewish Board, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation Honorary Board, Global Strays, and Southampton Bath and Tennis Club’s Charitable Foundation. ABOUT ANA OLIVEIRA Ana Oliveira is the president and CEO of The New York Women’s Foundation. Since 2006, Ana has steered the increase of the foundation’s grant making from $1.7M to $11M. Ana serves as a commissioner for the NYC Commission on Human Rights, sits on the Independent Commission to Study Criminal Justice Reform in NYC, and is on the board of Philanthropy New York. Ana has held key roles as a CEO of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, VP of Programs at Osborne Association, and Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center Substance Abuse Clinic. Ana earned her M.A. in medical anthropology and a Ph.D. (honorable) from the New School for Social Research. She was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and resides in Manhattan.

ow many parties did you attend on July Fourth weekend? Chances are, with Robbins Wolfe having catered 10 events that weekend, you likely attended at least one of theirs! For more than 30 years, the popular saying has been: “If you follow the Robbins Wolfe trucks, you’re going to the best parties in the Hamptons!”

Three events highlighted Robbins Wolfe’s list of 10! On Friday night was Southampton Fresh Air Home’s annual American picnic for over 500 guests.

Families frolicked at a private estate on Meadow Lane, complete with carnival games and a tennis court filled with dining tables for all to enjoy the hearty barbecue fare. The evening was capped off with spectacular Grucci fireworks at dusk!

On Saturday, in the village on South Main Street, the Southampton History Museum’s annual Halsey House gala celebrated its 120th anniversary.

Under a beautiful tent, the Robbins Wolfe team served (and tended bar. Did someone say, “Whispering Angel”?!) delicious hors d’oeuvres, including endive petals with lobster and truffle grilled cheese sandwiches, among other tasty treats, to the 400 guests.

Down the street, Dr. Andrew Jacono and Jessica Wasmuth hosted a backyard celebration for more than 40 guests, honoring the graduation of Dr. Jacono’s most recent fellowship student, Dr. Sean Alemi. Two past graduates at the party were Dr. Joseph Rousso and Dr. Joseph Russell. Dr. Jacono is a philanthropist and plastic surgeon to the stars as well as the author of the currently published The Park Avenue Face.

Have you missed Quentin Tarantino, who brought us Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds. Well, he’s back! His ninth blockbuster is inspired by the 1969 killing of Sharon Tate by Charles Manson. The evocative film paints a perfect picture of the era and co-stars Brad Pitt, who goes topless on a roof and confessed: “I’m one of those people you hate because of genetics.” His co-star Leonardo DiCaprio said: “Everywhere I go, somebody is staring at me. I don’t know if people are staring because they Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, recognize me or because they think I’m Leonardo DiCaprio @ Once Upon A Time in Hollywood a weirdo.” Margot Robbie, the female lead explained, “If I have to get into a bikini, then I eat carrot sticks for three days.” The flick also features Dakota Fanning and Al Pacino. Tcheng knows his fashion history, having also made Dior and I and Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel. I’m trying to convince Tcheng to do the life of Charles James to finish this trilogy because their lives were wickedly intertwined. The film traces the rise and fall, via cocaine and AIDS, of Roy Halston Frowick and his career from farm boy to making Jackie Kennedy’s iconic pink pill box hat and fashion fame to his friendships with Andy Warhol, Liza Minnelli, and me. If you are interested in fashion’s larger-thanlife characters, you’ll enjoy this movie, which includes footage of Halston being driven in his Rolls Royce during his final days in San Francisco. I concur with the Los Angeles Times’ critic Kimber Myers, who wrote: “Like Halston’s bias-cut designs, Tcheng’s documentary only skims the surface of his life, but boy, does it look great doing it.” Bravo!

Race of Hope

It’s always scary to look at myself (yes, yours truly) on the big screen. But there I was, throughout the French film director Frédéric Tcheng’s gorgeously shot documentary about the designer Halston. The interesting part is that he used vintage footage by Anton Petrich of me from when I was 19 to two years ago. Parts of the footage show me interviewing Halston and his hero/enemy, and my mentor, the haute couturier Charles James. Watching myself age on camera is not my idea of a good time, but the film itself is an authentic, if superficial, look at the man whom I once called my lover. I’ll leave the story of my teenage affair with Halston for my memoir. I saw the film at the Southampton Arts Center where the founding board member Simone Levinson and the NY

Hamptons Tea Dance

I first met the LGBTQ icon Edie Windsor, whose Supreme Court case legalized gay marriage, when she was honored at the hoot and holler that is always the fun Hamptons Tea Dance at the Nova’s Ark Project. Although Edie has gone to heaven, her spirt was very much alive at the dance that benefits SAGE, which provides Jean Shafiroff and Congresswoman Rebecca Seawright supportive services and consumer re@ Hamptons Tea Dance sources to LGBT older adults and their caregivers and Callen-Lorde Community Health Center. This was the 27th anniversary of the tea and, as in previous years, the field was adorned with a 50-foot segment of the mile-long rainbow flag created by Gilbert Baker for Stonewall 25 in NY to mark the 25th anniversary of the gay civil rights movement. In 1994, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized the mile-long flag as the world’s largest flag. Inspiring! This summer’s tea was recognized as a World Pride Event. DJ Frankie Sharp kept Assemblywoman Rebecca Seawright (NY), the philanthropist Jean Shafiroff, and hundreds of others too colorful to mention on the dance floor. There was a wild and wonderful performance by RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 10’s Yuhua Hamasaki. God’s Love We Deliver

Another Pride event was the Midsummer Night Drinks party at the Samuel Parrish house, in Southampton. The 19th edition of this benefit raised money for God’s Love We Deliver, which prepares nutritious meals for people with HIV/ AIDS and other severe illnesses. In the mix were Margaret Russell, Vicente Wolf, Richard Mishaan, and the organization’s David Ludwigson. At the end of the party guests received a gift of Chuck’s famous brownies, baked by God’s Love We Deliver’s baker for over 28 years, Chuck the Baker; the night raised $300,000. The Love Ball

Susanne Bartsch, the iconic downtown party giver, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) threw a fanny basher dubbed Love Ball III at Gotham Hall, with lighting by the brilliant artist Bentley Meeker. The benefit blended high fashion and celebrities and highlighted ballroom culture, while helping raise money for the CFDA-Vogue HIV/ AIDS Fund. The ball’s MC was the Tony- and Grammy-winning actor Billy Porter, who sang his new song “Love Yourself.” Performers were judged by a group that included the beloved designer Marc Jacobs and

his husband, Char Defrancesco; Mary J. Blige; David and Phillipe Blond; Nicky Hilton-Rothschild; Kevin Aviance; and Dita Von Teese. The Harlem fashion legend Dapper Dan presented the trophies to Roger Superstar, Orlando, Yasmine Petty, Invertebrate, Charlene, and Extravagance. In the mix were Jason Wu, Amanda Lepore, David Barton, Fernando Garcia, Christian Siriano, Janet Mock, Jonathan Adler, Brian Donnelly (KAWS), Linda Fargo, Simon Doonan, Simon Huck, Stan Herman, Steven Klein, and Timo Weiland. ACRIA AND LOVE HEALS

Donna Karan and the founder of Wings Over Haiti, Jonathan Nash Glynn, welcomed 400 guests to the East Hampton Airport for this charity’s third annual benefit. Wings Over Haiti, which was created in response to the 2010 devastating earthquake, builds schools for children in Haiti. The $65,000 raised at the event will facilitate the opening of a second school this fall, which will serve hundreds of impoverished children. Coco Myers of Folioeast curated the artwork for the silent auction, which featured over 80 artists.

ACRIA held a luncheon at The Times Square Edition hotel to celebrate the Love Heals Center for Youth & Families. ACRIA, a leading international organization in HIV/AIDS research, education, and prevention, partners with Love Heals, the largest provider of science-based sexual health education and leadership skills for New York City youth. In their new book The Method to the Madness: Donald Trump’s Ascent as Told by Those Who Were Hired, Fired, Inspired—and Inaugurated, the veteran journalists Salkin and Short have written an objective, nonpartisan oral history devoid of anonymous sources.

The actress and philanthropist Leesa Rowland was a special guest at the second annual Hamptons Interactive Influencer Brunch at The Maidstone Hotel, East Hampton. As a philanthropist and animal rights activist, as well the founder and president of Animal Ashram, Leesa Rowland is one of the top East End influencers. This event was a benefit for Bideawee, one of the first no-kill animal rescue centers in America, with a focus on its Westhampton rescue center.

ummer is a time when you don’t need much — only a few great items and a beach. Here are some of my must-haves.

Hair care is key says my only trusted colorist, Abby Haliti. A few other essential hair-care tips are to cut back on heat styling, limit sun and chlorine exposure (wet your hair before jumping in the pool), use moisturizing products to keep hair healthy (Davines/MOMO is amazing for dehydrated hair), and get a trim. Also, wear a hat if you’re going to be exposed to the sun all day, but also be mindful that this can accelerate heat/sweat, which is why you should still always use a sunscreen to help protect your hair.

I like my beach hats to be so big they flop over my head!

Neutral colors make packing much easier because mostly everything will match. I would definitely check out Cabana in Southampton. Julie, the owner, is really great at merchandising. Two brands that I love are Lolo and Filuhats (from Italy).

I would get something crochet. How about a bikini, which will last a lifetime, never stretching too much. I love the brands that Moda Operandi carries. A crochet dress works great from a boat to a restaurant with a little slide or mule. My personality comes out in my accessories. My travel jewelry comes from Erwin Pearl, available online, in some airports, around the U.S., and at Rockefeller Center. I love the price points and the variety of finds. I am currently wearing their huggy earrings, which are reversible. How cool. From day to night I just switch sides for two different looks. They also have amazing chains I can layer.

When I travel in the summer, I always bring along the perfect wedge heel since they can be almost as comfortable as sneakers, depending on the height and make. I always look for cork material and have had luck with Jimmy Choo and Soludos brands.

Large bags. I fill bags with more in summer than in winter (sunblock, bikini, sunglasses, etc.) so I need a bag that can handle me from day to night. Some of my favorites are from Caterina Bertini. These summer bags can fit more than the average shoulder bags. They also look very Chanel-esque but for much less. I am also loving all-white bags paired with cool straps.

The essential summer jean for me is a white wide leg. I found my perfect pair at Zara and bought three pairs. This summer, brand names are not all that it takes to get my attention. I like whatever makes me feel summer fresh. Having a clean white T-shirt by the dozen is always a must, and I love the ATM brand I love vintage anything. My Gucci sunglasses are unique and make any outfit that much cooler.

Vianel. I love anything bespoke because it is chic. This brand’s design is minimal, which I also really like. I can keep something for years without getting bored. ike Frank Baum creating The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a landscape of lovable characters, Richard Demato has created his brainchild, the RJD Gallery, a landscape for magical realist works of art, in the heart of Bridgehampton.

The gallery specializes in contemporary art with a focus on magical realism, narrative portraiture, and urban landscape. It exhibits international, representational artists with a concentration on realism, photorealistic portraiture, surrealism, and figurative art. Drawings, paintings, and sculptures of emerging artists as well as American master painters represented in the RJD Private Collection present a contemporary vision of our world.

There are many layers to this down-to-earth gallerist, whom you can often catch strolling down the streets of Sag Harbor in vintage rock tee-shirts and colorful sneakers.

Richard graduated from the University of California at Irvine, and worked toward a PhD in molecular biology and biochemistry.

In 1980, he moved to NYC, and business opportunities enabled Richard to establish a 30-year career in the textile industry, where he opened and operated what became a global textile and manufacturing business. He traveled extensively throughout the world, and acquired a vast collection of art and collectibles, as well as priceless experiences on his journeys. His firm was extremely active with a myriad of charities, including the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), AIDS LA and NYC, Fountain House NYC, Joel Finkelstein Cancer Foundation, UJA-Federation, and it funded research in breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s. In 2002, he left the textile business and moved to Sag Harbor, and he joined the board of The Retreat, a non-profit that provides shelter and support for victims of domestic abuse. At the end of 2009, he opened RJD Gallery to raise awareness and cultivate donors for The Retreat (retreatinc.org), and he spent more than 14 years on its board.

Richard is an honorary board member of the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, and is very thankful for the support of the gallery’s collectors, which allows the RJD Gallery to endow nonprofit causes.

Richard currently resides in a historic whaling-captain’s home in the center of Sag Harbor. The house was originally built in 1790, and updated in 1833, and is an example of his lifelong passion for developing properties, including a private island.

GEORGES BERGÈS THE NEW ART WORLD VISIONARY OF SOHO

stute art world insiders are increasingly taking note of the young, pioneering gallerist Georges Bergès, who is single-handedly restoring art gallery resonance to Soho not seen since the days of Leo Castelli and Mary Boone in the late 1980s and early ’90s The artists represented

by Georges Bergès Gallery (GBG) are drawing interest from the likes of Edgar Bronfman Jr, who recently had a private viewing of the work of Jill Krutick. GBG openings draw collectors like Christopher Rothko (son of Mark Rothko) and Idehen Aruede, the CFO of the Whitney Museum.

From October 3 through November 10, the gallery will have its splashiest and most important show in its five-year history. Three Mile Harbor Road will feature Abstract Expressionist works by Nicolas Carone (1910-2010) and Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) and the collaboration painting by both, from 1954. “This was a rare collaboration where these two dynamic artists did this one work together,” the art dealer explains. One piece from this series Psychomachia II is in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum. Psychomachia III be in the gallery’s fall show.

According to Bergès, Both Carone and Pollock believed in psychic energy as a link between the artist and his work.

Pollock saw a painting Carone was working on and asked if it was finished.

When Carone told him that it wasn’t, that it was an exercise, Pollock picked up a brush and said, “Well, then let’s exercise.”

“That for me,” Bergès bubbles, “was that amazing moment of synergistic spontaneity. That, together with their close friendship and shared experiences and ideals, gave birth to this rarest of collaborations, and this piece will be unveiled for the very first time at GBG.” The last time Nick Carone saw Jackson Pollock alive was two months before the fateful night of August 11, 1956. This was the night that Jackson Pollock was to literally lose his head after driving drunk, stoked on gin, and ended up with his green Oldsmobile convertible wrapped around a birch tree less than a mile from his studio and home at 830 Springs Fireplace Road, East Hampton.

It has been said that Pollock saw a house on Three Mile Harbor Road, also in East Hampton, that he urged Nick Carone and his family to move to, so that both men could be in close proximity to each other. The Three Mile Harbor Road exhibition will be fascinating visual testament to the relationship and kinetic connection between these two artists.

This show will be one of the most anticipated art whirl moments of the fall art season, a show clearly staged to coincide with Pollockmania this September, when his purported but unauthenticated last painting before his death, Red, Black, and Silver, goes up for auction at Phillips de Pury & Company.

historical and cultural hub for Bridgehampton and other towns and hamlets in the Hamptons, the Bridgehampton Museum fosters appreciation for the community’s history, oral history, and cultural traditions of Eastern Long Island.

Through its educational lectures, exhibits, concerts, tours, and special events, the museum welcomes both Bridgehampton residents and visitors to partake in activities that celebrate the area’s rich cultural heritage. The museum’s archives offer scholarly researchers as well as the general public access to historical photos, documents, maps, and works of art that offer insight into the community’s history.

The Bridgehampton Historical Society, doing business as the Bridgehampton Museum, is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1956. It currently owns and occupies two acres on Main Street, and the property includes two contemporary barns, the Strong Wheelwright Shop (ca. 1870), the Bridgehampton Jail (1907), an outhouse (ca. 1890), and the William Corwith House (ca. 1825 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places).

The museum is the steward for the 1840 Nathaniel Rogers House, and, in collaboration with the Town of Southampton, has embarked on a major restoration of that house (also listed on the National Register of Historic Places). The museum’s new home will be in this home once restoration has been completed.

Over 100 ledgers, diaries, and daybooks dating from 1730 to the early part of the 20th century, including the records of the Hand Brothers Farm and the Hallock & Pierson Insurance Agency.

A collection of more than 300 letters that deal with everyday life on Long Island, with a particular focus on the lives of members of the Corwith family.

A collection of more than 2,100 pieces of clothing and textiles dating mostly from the late 19th to early 20th century.

THE HAMPTONS POOL AN EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL OASIS

he quintessential Hamptons summer lifestyle is outdoor living with a focus, for many, on poolside living. The pool and the area around it are used as “outdoor rooms,” the seamless flow between interior and exterior. If you’re considering designing and building a pool or renovating an older existing pool, you’ve got a daunting project ahead. With that in mind, Social Life sought out an expert to bring us up to speed on what’s involved in creating a special pool.

We asked Stuart Andrews, the owner of Shinnecock Pools in Southampton, for his take on what makes a great pool and what he sees as his client’s chief concerns. Andrews — who has been building and caring for luxury pools in the Hamptons for more than 20 years — was forthright and even philosophical. “For many of my clients, building an amazing pool is often how they want to proclaim their success. And they truly are works of art. A lot of people choose to express themselves through the artistry of a pool.” Andrews, who has built and maintains some of the most dazzling pools on the East End, humbly offers that he is more of a facilitator than anything else. “My job is to listen and listen carefully to their ideas and hopes and then bring my client’s vision to reality.

And that reality reveals their personal passions intensely. No two of my pools are the same; they’re like snowflakes!” he added. Even though he’s built pools costing seven figures, he prefers to focus on the intangible when discussing them, “I like to quote the author Joan Didion, who wrote; ‘A pool... is a symbol not of affluence but of order, of control over Social Life

the uncontrollable. A pool is water, made available and useful and is, as such, infinitely soothing...’ Isn’t that wonderfully put? Think about it. Water is the essence of life. “It’s not always about getting into your pool but knowing that it’s there for you at any time, that you can look forward to that moment after a hard day at work, to have time to yourself to be at peace, surrounded by the liquid perfection that exists in your backyard. However, for people to drift into a meditative state when they get into their pool, everything must be flawless. The tile must be immaculate. The water condition must be just right. The Sperry family designed and built the first-ever sailcloth tent.

Because the Sperry Tents founder, Steve Sperry, was a sailmaker, and when he decided to make a party tent one day, he used the materials he had on hand in his sail loft in Marion, Massachusetts. to five-star restaurants. Amid all the noshing, I made time to see the sights, including museums, ancient ruins, area wineries, a tiny Arab village, the old town of Acre, and some of Tel Aviv’s celebrated Bauhaus architecture.

were a big hit with our chef entourage. The Barbuto and Jams restaurateur Jonathan Waxman enthused about our visit saying, “The markets in Israel are full of beautiful fresh produce, spices, baked goods, and more.”

THE WHITE CITY

THE SABICH SANDWICH REIGNS

This year is a terrific time to visit Tel Aviv, as 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, the German school founded by Walter Gropius, and the city is awash in the architectural style. Tel Aviv is home to the world’s largest concentration of Bauhaus buildings, with around 4,000 of the whitewashed structures known as the “White City,” part of which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The rich Bauhaus presence all over the city is due to the influx of German-Jewish architects and designers who trained under Gropius and immigrated to Israel as Nazism arose in their home country. The functional, cost-effective, clean-line style was perfectly suited to house the growing refugee population.

Many buildings fell into disrepair over the years, but remained largely intact, and now they are enjoying a renaissance.

The goodies on display at the Carmel Market had us salivating, so a street food excursion was the obvious next step.

We tried Israel’s most common fast foods: falafel, shawarma, schnitzel, and the bourekas. The latter is a type of baked pastry filled with potatoes, cheese, or mushrooms. The sabich, a big, tasty pita sandwich stuffed with fried eggplant, hardboiled eggs, and more, is the best thing I’ve eaten in decades and was akin to eating a hamburger for the first time, except there is no meat. The sabich is not to be missed!

CARMEL MARKET TOUR — ATMOSPHERE & FOOD We took a trip to the largest market in Tel Aviv, the Carmel Market, or Shuk HaCaramel in Hebrew. Everything is sold here, from clothes to spices to fruit to electronics. Established in 1920, the Carmel is hugely popular with locals and tourists, and is always busy, especially on Thursdays and Fridays, when people prepare for their sabbath meals. DAN HOTEL TEL AVIV I stayed in the Dan Hotel, Tel Aviv’s grande dame and the city’s first luxury hotel, which over the years has been home to heads of state, artists, and celebrities like the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, and Sharon Stone. The beachfront location, overlooking the Mediterranean, is central and perfect for exploring the city, as many of the best attractions, as well as shopping and nightlife, are within easy walking distance. Nearby is the hip area Neve Tzedek, which dates from 1887 and was the first Jewish neighborhood to be built outside the walls of the ancient port of Jaffa. Picturesque and village-like, its narrow streets and restored buildings are abloom with boutiques, galleries, and craft shops.



JAFFA — REDISCOVERED A walk along the seafront promenade from the Dan will bring you to Jaffa, an ancient harbor whose bobbing fishing boats, romantic labyrinthine stone alleys, nightlife, and colorful flea market has long attracted artists and musicians. It is a lovely area to stroll and explore. The rest of the world has finally caught up with the artists, and Jaffa is suddenly sprouting luxury hotels in reformulated spaces. Just opened in the last year are the Setai Tel Aviv in a former Ottoman prison; The Jaffa, designed by John Pawson; and the Drisco, which is actually a revival of an original hotel that had been closed since 1940. In recent years Jaffa has also seen a gastronomic renaissance, with celebrity chefs opening restaurants, bakeries, and innovative hybrids like Beit Kandinof, a combination contemporary arts center and restaurant/bar.

CASTEL WINERY & THE JUDEAN HILLS QUARTET We took a trip to the Judean Hills Quartet, a group of four wineries that have joined forces to establish the region as a serious center for winemaking. Wine has been made here since before Christ, and now these four — Domaine du Castel, Flam Winery, Sphera, and Tzora Vineyards — have become known for producing some of Israel’s finest wines. ited the family-owned Castel winery, which was founded in the 1970s, and now produces around 100,000 bottles per year, most of which are exported. Perhaps the most famous winery in Israel, Domaine du Castel offers guided tasting tours, with cheeses homemade at a nearby kibbutz.

LUNCH AT MAJDA IN EIN RAFA Ein Rafa is a village of about 1,200 people not far from either Tel Aviv or Jerusalem, and it is unusual in Israel for a co-existence project in which the local Arab schoolchildren share joint activities and games with nearby Jewish schoolchildren. The town is also famous for Majda, a renowned restaurant whose owners are the married couple Yaakov Barhum, a Muslim, and Michal Baranes, a Jew. We had a delicious lunch at Majda, which is famous for its one-of-a-kind fusion cuisine, colorful décor and rooftop views. The restaurant caught on after it was featured on the Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown television show. The menu features dishes such as shrimp falafel, but the star of the show was — again — the sabich, that heavenly Israeli eggplant sandwich. Majda’s version includes hardboiled eggs, tangy amba, Israeli salad, tahini, and parsley, all wrapped in pita bread. My mouth waters just thinking about it.

DINNER AT HASALON Back in Tel Aviv, our culinary troop got to try out dinner at HaSalon, the brainchild of Eyal Shani, one of Israel’s top chefs and the judge on Master Chef Israel. This place is highly unusual in that it is open only two nights a week, and the menu changes each time. There are two seatings on each of those two evenings, with the earlier one in a more traditional format, with dishes served as classical music plays in the background. For the second seating, the music is much louder, the menu service is more innovative — it has been described as performance art — and a DJ starts spinning. “The first seating is dinner, the second seating is a party,” the chef has said. HaSalon, which translates to “the living room” in English, has just opened a branch in NYC, at the Skyline Hotel in Midtown, serving three nights per week: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

DINNER AT MASHYA Mashya, located inside the Mendeli Street Hotel in Tel Aviv, showcases the talented young chef Yossi Shitrit, who melds Moroccan and Middle Eastern flavors for something unique. Shitrit is famous for his innovative use of spices — he serves a bread with a mix of 18 — and for bringing a lightness to classic dishes.

Standouts are the red tuna sashimi with wheat salad, coriander, olives, and orange; and shrimp with raw spinach, mushrooms, and corn foam.

Night Walkers. Artisans practice medieval crafts in the reconstructed market area, and you can traverse a Templar tunnel that connects the fortress to the beach. Remarkably well preserved and restored, this fortress was discovered only in 1990.

AKKO, THE KINGDOM OF KNIGHTS We took a trip to Akko — known as “Acre” in English — an ancient coastal city in Northeast Israel known for its wellpreserved Old City walls. The city sits on a natural harbor of Haifa Bay, with a population consisting of Jews, Muslims, Christians, Druze, and Behais, and it is the holiest city of the Bahais faith. The Old City — within the walls — dates back thousands of years and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Akko is beautiful, with the feel of Dubrovnik, and the charming city is filled with narrow streets. It has a terrific market famous for handmade sweets and arguably the best hummus in all of Israel. Top Chef’s Gail Simmons said, “Sweets in the Akko market feature the vibrant colors and the exotic flavors of Israel, including layers of pâté de fruit and marshmallows. The Kingdom of Knights is a restored archeological site dating back to the Crusades. Filled with castle-like arched stone rooms, it makes you feel like you’re in an episode of Game of Thrones without the SocialLifeMagazine.com

SARONA MARKET We took a tour of Sarona Market, a one-stop shop for gourmet food stores. Tel Aviv’s newest and largest gourmet food emporium is a 90,000 square-foot indoor temple devoted to all things culinary — think of it as Tel Aviv’s version of Chelsea Market. Established in 2017 and set in a former Templar colony compound, it contains many shops and eateries, including outlets of some of Israel’s most famous institutions. You’ll find hummus from Abu Hassan in Jaffa and delectable cheeses from Jerusalem’s Basher Fromagerie. If you’re craving otherthan-Israeli cuisine, you’re all set here as there are bites from around the world, from ramen noodles to waffles to Asian buns. Right outside the market, dozens of vendors have set up shop, so you can munch on your snacks while browsing books, clothing, and crafts, or relax in one of the grassy areas interspersed throughout the area.



DINNER AT L28 CULINARY PLATFORM We had an edgy meal at L28 Culinary Platform. What’s that? Yes, it is a restaurant, and it’s also a hybrid, acting as an accelerator for chef entrepreneurs, and an incubator for creating innovative techniques in Israeli cuisine.

If L28 sounds like something new, its location gives a clue — it lies at the heart of Tel Aviv’s booming startup sector. Up-and-coming chefs are given six-month residencies, and the platform provides a full kitchen staff, an experienced restaurant manager, and mentoring by top restaurateurs. The chefs get to create new dishes and develop relationships in the industry. The platform was founded by StartUp Nation Central, a nonprofit organization that serves as a gateway for Israeli innovation.

So, yes, it’s a culinary platform, but don’t be put off by the new-fangled format. You can make a reservation and have an elegant meal prepared by a chef who will soon be running one of Israel’s newest dining hot spots. Return visits are a treat for diners because the menu changes every six months.

We visited the Dan Gourmet Culinary Institute, one of Tel Aviv’s leading cooking schools, to meet the students and sample their work.

Their classes offer step-by-step instructions for a wide range of classic dishes and the many influences used in Israeli cooking, from Moroccan to Eastern European. At our meal, we had a Moroccan dish called chraime, which is fish in tomato sauce, plus couscous, kreplach (a type of Jewish dumpling), noodle kugel, and yes, even chopped liver. It was like eating at Bubby’s table, with more vibrant flavors.

The Tel Aviv Museum of Art is one of the city’s biggest attractions, drawing over one million visitors in 2018. The museum has its own stellar collection of painting and sculpture masterpieces, including top works by the important Impressionists, Old Masters, and contemporary artists, as well as photography and video. On the main building’s first floor alone, you’ll see pieces from the permanent collection by Renoir, Degas, Monet, Picasso, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Matisse, and Chagall.

NACHALAT BINYAMIN MARKET Here’s another can’t-miss market, but this one isn’t for food; it’s for arts and crafts and well worth a visit. Twice a week, the pedestrian-only Nachalat Binyamin Street turns into an open-air market for local artists, and there’s an official vetting process requiring that all crafts must be handmade. There’s no junk here! It’s the place to find that thing you never knew you needed, with a wide range of ceramics, toys, jewelry, household goods like wooden cutting boards, hand-painted dinnerware, and much more. The market is in one of the city’s oldest districts, chock-a-block with Bauhaus architecture, and perfect Social Life

e’ve all come across the postcard GIF of a tangerine sun, rippling cerulean waves, and beckoning palm trees. This specific idea of paradise proliferates on media platforms when days are dreary. That idyllic image comes to life at the Four Seasons Maui. This manicured tropical paradise boasts on-site access to some of the island’s best beaches, has incredible restaurants, a brilliant spa, and meaningful cultural activities to truly sweep you away and renew your soul.

First, I have a confession to make. I’ve been dreaming about the Four Seasons Maui for a long time. While visiting the island for my husband’s birthday years ago, we made a reservation at Spago and the lobster Hong Kong style kept us coming back two more nights. Luckily all the restaurants on the Four Seasons property serve food this delicious, and I was incredibly surprised that the

breakfast hostess on the second day of our stay already knew us by name — that was definitely a first. We got to know one of our waiters during several long lunches and were impressed by his love of the island and the Four Seasons culture. He told us how working at the company has allowed him to travel and see the world, or, as he put it, “live his best life.”

Weiner brings back some of Almond’s signature favorites: steamed black mussels with shallots, white wine, and parsley; steak frites with classic sauces; and the popular and satisfying macaroni and cheese. Another favorite is Pierre’s, a French bistro specializing in local seafood, emphasizing fresh locally grown ingredients, resulting in a constantly shifting, seasonally-inspired menu. The bouillabaisse Marseillaise is brimming with seafood poached in broth seasoned with aromatic saffron. The two-pound Maine lobster fricassee is flambéd with cognac and tarragon. The paella Valencia is featured on Saturdays. It’s stocked with shrimp, sea scallops, mussels, clams, chorizo, chicken, peas, and Spanish saffron. Finish your meal with a caramelized apple tart made with puff pastry and topped with vanilla ice cream. The coffee icecream topped with espresso and whipped cream is just perfect.

Another great dining choice is Bistro Eté, whose chef is Arie. His menus are inspired by his Cypriot heritage, formal training at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, and years working under the Michelin-recognized chef Philippe Da Silva in Provence.

Bistro Eté offers classic dishes such as escargot, striped bass with champagne truffle sauce, along with signatures such duck wings confit with curry coleslaw, house barbeque jerk, and roasted local Brussels sprouts with pomegranate seeds and tahini. Chef Arie’s vegan and vegetarian dishes are tasty options as well.

For most, it also happens to be the last hurrah and the perfect excuse to let one’s hair down, throw caution to the wind, and imbibe in something sweet…and saucy. Of course by that we mean a bit of booze! Behold the Frosé!

This exquisitely simple mashup of the classic frozen cocktail and Rose wine, everyone’s favorite summer sip, doesn’t pack a massive punch, but it is fairly addictive. On top of that, it’s also one of the most attractive beverages one can serve at a seasonal fete. Here’s a tip: for optimal impact, be sure to choose just the right glassware and never forget a garnish. First thing’s first: you need to chill out (and make sorbet, that is). But, don’t freak out: sorbet is easy to make. All you need is an ice cream machine. I suggest you start with the basic Cuisinart and advance from there. Enjoy!

Frosé Sorbet Makes 2 quar ts INGREDIENTS: 4 cups watermelon juice (puree with no seeds) 2 cups Whispering Angel Rosé wine 1 cup granulated sugar Optional: Mint leaves and watermelon wedge for garnish INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Heat up the Rosé wine and sugar in a small pot over medium heat until sugar is dissolved.

2. Remove the pot from the flame as soon as the sugar dissolves.

3. Combine watermelon juice and wine mixture in a mixing bowl.

4. Pop in fridge and chill 4-8 hours.

5. Once chilled, pour into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Freeze until firm, at least 4 hours. Garnish and serve.

Pro tip: Looking for ooohs and ahs?

Instead of serving Frosé as a frozen cocktail, I like to sweeten it a bit and mix with sweet watermelon and serve it after dinner as a digestif and or dessert. Delish!

Talk about your Maison Marcel rosé and what makes it unique and special?

The brand was born from the love story between my grandmother and my grandfather Marcel. He was working at a winery when he met her and after their first date picnic decided to create a blend to win her over. The idea of Maison Marcel was born then. Be different, take risks and do everything from a place of love!

How would you describe the notes of the Marcel rosé?

Marcel is a semi-dry rosé with notes of peach, lychee, and elderflower. It comes off as very fruit-forward and finishes off like a dry rosé. One leading wine critic has described it as “The Sauvignon Blanc of Rosé.”

Every celebrity, it seems, now has their own rosé brand. Jon Bon Jovi, John Legend, Nicole Miller to name three! Have you tried their rosé product and, if so, what do you think?

Rosé is the new vodka and all those you mentioned taste pretty much the same. There is no distinctive taste there. I am definitely not impressed by any of those celebrity rosés.

For me, the appeal of the Marcel rosé is the fact it’s bright and crispy. After a few sips I feel transported to a quaint seafood shack along Costa Smeralda in Sardinia, quaffing your pink wine over a bountiful spread of langoustines and calamari!

That is the perfect compliment!

What would you consider the perfect pairing for the Marcel rosé?

Sharp cheeses, Asian food, and paired with gourmet pizza is an equally perfect notion. That and chocolate cake!

Would you consider it a travesty to use Marcel as the base of a specialty concocted beach cocktail?

Of course not. That is why being a semi-dry wine, meaning with some residual sugar, makes it perfect to use as a base for cocktails.

My favorite Marcel mix is called “A Bigger Splash,” which is 3/4 Marcel, 1/4 grapefruit juice, topped with a dash of St-Germain and a basil leaf.



And to go even further beyond in choices, there is always online. It is 2019 after all . . . welcome to the wine connoisseur of the digital age!

How about Tuscany? The story of the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia winery is well known and reads like a movie. In 1982, Lodovico Antinori used a substantial inheritance to plant Bordeaux varietals on a scrubby patch of Tuscan coastline, hoping to compete with his

older brother, who earlier had established a nearby estate. While the property has since seen its share of intrigue and ownership changes, today it is honored as a Tuscan icon, with its flagship bottles coveted by major collectors and fetching eye-watering prices at auction.

The winery’s much-heralded 2015 Le Serre Nuove, crafted from the younger vines on the estate, receives the same careful expertise and attention as its more flamboyantly priced big brothers, and at a fraction of the cost, explains Grape Habitat. But not by sacrificing quality; this spectacular wine consistently earns both consumer raves and mid-90s points.

Yes, these destinations should be on everyone’s bucket list. But if you can’t make it this summer (I for one am not leaving my beach blanket), you can still toast to summer, sunsets, and wine with carefully selected vino from these spectacular regions. Happy August to all!!

nn Colgin is a vintner and the founder of Colgin Cellars, in St. Helena, California.

Describe your background — How did you get started in the wine industry?

My first passion was actually art, which inspired my foray into the wine industry. I grew up in Waco, Texas, and was fortunate enough to go to boarding school in Dallas where I took my first art history class and was immediately hooked. I majored in art history at Vanderbilt University and then studied at Sotheby’s in London.

While in London, I attended my first formal wine tasting and I discovered a new passion. A few years later, while continuing a career in the auction world, I created my own handcrafted red wine under the Colgin label in Napa Valley, using inspirations from many of the incredible Bordeaux blends I was able to enjoy during my time in London.

Now, over 25 years later, our incredible winemaking team continues to create Cabernet Sauvignon–based wines and Syrah that emphasize perfume, minerality, and freshness while celebrating the luscious fruit of Napa Valley. Each wine celebrates one of our distinctive hillside vineyards.

Do think your background in art informed your approach to winemaking?

We take a handcrafted approach to making all of our wines, allowing nature to shine through all aspects of the winemaking process to showcase every aspect our various hillside terroirs have to offer.

Like a great work of art, a truly exceptional wine has the power to evoke emotion and create lasting memories.

What’s next for Colgin Cellars?

Our goal has always been to introduce people around the world to the wines of Napa Valley while being good stewards of the land and continuing to give back to our community. Looking to the future of Napa Valley means acknowledging and nurturing the next generation of winemakers while enjoying every moment of the process and, of course, enjoying incredible wines!

I don’t think it’s necessarily taboo, but I do think there are aspects of the subject that most people aren’t comfortable sharing publicly.

What was the most rewarding aspect of your journey?

Considering the subject matter, the fact that my husband and children are so incredibly proud and supportive, that means everything to me.

Having people I admire and respect behind the play to bring it this far is icing on the cake.

Do you enjoy performing or writing more? How does one feel different from the other?

I love writing. To discover it at this point in my life has been incredibly rewarding. I feel like I’ve made a new friend. Being able to perform my own work is exhilarating and terrifying all at the same time. I can’t say I enjoy one more than the other.

At this point, I just feel grateful to be able to do both.

Was it hard to delve into such personal material?

I honestly feel like it wasn’t an option for me. I needed to dive in and be my most authentic self. It was time. I’ve always been a very private person, always putting my best game face forward. I was ready to get personal. It feels liberating.

Is the show autobiographical or semi-autobiographical?

It’s about 80 percent autobiographical and 20 percent imagination or borrowed from friends, from whom I got clearance to share their stories. As I say in the play, ‘All names have been changed to protect the not so innocent.’

BOSS MOM A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JAYMA CARDOSO

Jayma tells us that she is lucky that her ex, John J. Zidziunas, a successful litigator, is an actively involved parent in John Jr’s life.

We asked Jayma to tell us what a typical Wednesday looks like for her.

7 a.m. — Wake up with my son and play with him for an hour. Have breakfast at Naturally Good. It’s near my new wellness business, The Sanctuary.

9 a.m. — Drop off my son at camp, and go to Taryn Toomey’s The Class at The Sanctuary.

10 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Answer calls and stop by the hotel to check on staff and deal with anything that needs to be done.

1:30 p.m. — Have lunch: buy fresh fish at Gosman’s and cook it at home.

3 p.m. to 5 p.m. — Spend time with my son swimming. He just loves to be in the pool for hours.

5:30 p.m. — Head back to Surf Lodge to say hello to the many locals who come to see Nancy Atlas play. After so many years I am still amazed by her talent.

8 p.m. — Eat dinner at Surf Lodge.

LEGAL LIABILITIES OF HIRING DOMESTIC HELP

Their jobs can include caring for children or a sick or elderly person, housekeeping chores, and other domestic duties performed in the employers’ homes People who hire domestic help, whether a housekeeper, a caregiver or a nanny, are often unaware of the legal liabilities and requirements that an employer faces. For example, in New York State, anyone who employs domestic help must: • Pay at least minimum wage and, where applicable, pay overtime* • Provide at least one day of rest per week • Pay on a weekly basis • Provide at least 3 days off after 1 year of work • Pay unemployment • Pay worker’s compensation • Provide the worker written documentation with notification of hourly wage and all deductions.

• * 1½ times the basic rate of pay after 40 hours of work or if a live-in after 44 hours of work per week Anyone who has not been properly paid or has been victimized as a result of non-compliance with these regulations has the right to file a complaint with the appropriate regulatory agency, regardless of his or her residency status. Therefore, an undocumented worker will have the right to file a complaint, although they will need work authorization before receiving unemployment benefits.

It should be noted that these requirements do not apply to workers employed on a casual basis, such as part-time babysitters in the home of their employers, or relatives of persons for whom they offer care.

In addition, there is a separate section in the New York State Human Rights Law, section 296-b, which prohibits certain unlawful discriminatory practices relating to “domestic workers.”

That statute states that it is an unlawful discriminatory practice for an employer to engage in unwelcome sexual advances or requests for sexual favors, verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, and unwelcome harassment based on gender, race, religion or national origin, where such harassment has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an SocialLifeMagazine.com

Anyone who hires a domestic worker must realize they are assuming the same rights, responsibilities, and obligations as any other employer, and that non-compliance can create significant, and potentially expensive, legal and financial liabilities.

One of his first works was sold to the Carlito’s Way actor John Ortiz, who was in the neighborhood shooting a film with Julian Schnabel. “He bought one of my first paintings when I set up on the street in SoHo,” Jansen recalls.

DOCUMENTARY HAMPTONS DÉBUT The Emmy-winning filmmaker John Scoular, a friend of Jansen’s, made the documentary Marcus Jansen: Examine and Report. It had its NY premiere at the East Hampton TV, Art & Film Festival at Guild Hall, where it won one of the top prizes.

PHILANTHROPY Jansen is active in the Southwest Florida Community Foundation, which helps support veterans with PTSD, low-income children, housing, and environmental issues. The Marcus Jansen Foundation Fund helps nonprofits provide exposure to culture for underprivileged families and communities.

Nancy Chemtob, known as one of New York’s top family law practitioners, has high-profile clients who include Tory Burch, Annette Lauer, Bobby Flay, and Star Jones. Nancy leads a firm of over a dozen lawyers with offices on Madison Avenue and in East Hampton. She has also developed a reputation as the go-to lawyer for samesex couples seeking divorce and child custody. As different types of families have become more prevalent, Chemtob has broken new ground in marriage law, even changing laws in cases where there had been no precedents.

SAME-SEX DIVORCE Chemtob handled New York’s first-ever same-sex divorce case that recognized out-of-state divorce for a same-sex couple who had married in Massachusetts. In a 2017 first-of-its-kind case, Chemtob fought to win shared custody of an unmarried same-sex couple’s adopted son for her client, Kelly Gunn. The case, Gunn v Hamilton, was the subject of a 14-page New Yorker article.

EVOLVING FAMILY LAW Now, Chemtob is finding that these rapidly evolving definitions of what constitutes a family have affected divorce and custody cases for everyone, including those of heterosexual couples. “Transgender and same-sex couples marrying, not being married, surrogacy, who’s the parent, all of these had been issues for same-sex couples,” Chemtob says, “and now the law is also shifting for couples that are not same-sex.”
