10 Reasons to involve Your Kids in the Free Nature Photo Contest
Written by Colleen Hook, Executive Director of Quinta Mazatlán
In a world dominated by screens and fast-paced schedules, finding meaningful ways to connect children with nature has never been more important. One creative and impactful approach is to involve kids in the Quinta Mazatlán and Valley Land Fund's FREE Youth Nature Photo Contest for ages 6 to 18.
Whether it’s through family, summer camp, or other programs, this free contest offers more than just a chance to win prizes— it fosters personal growth, environmental awareness, and creativity.

1. Fosters a Connection with Nature
Photography encourages children to slow down, observe, and appreciate the natural world.
2. Boosts Creativity
Through the smartphone or the lens of a camera, children learn to express their unique vision of the world.

3. Builds Patience and Focus
Waiting for the right light or finding the perfect angle teaches valuable lessons in patience and attention to detail—skills that are transferable to many areas of life.
4. Encourages Outdoor Activity
Get kids away from the screen and moving outdoors in the neighborhood, at the park, and in the urban sanctuary at Quinta Mazatlán.
5. Teaches Environmental Stewardship
By capturing the beauty and diversity of nature, children develop a deeper respect for the environment.

6. Enhances Technical and Visual Skills
Composition, lighting, and focus—all can serve as a foundation for future hobbies and careers.
7. Promotes Self-Esteem and Confidence
Every child who enters will have one of their six images shown in the Youth Nature Photo Exhibit, which serves as a confidence booster.
8. Encourages Storytelling
Each photo tells a story, and children learn to think about what story they want to convey.

9. Creates Lasting Memories
The images become cherished experiences for families and classrooms.
10. Inspires Future Interests
What starts as a fun project might spark a lifelong passion for biology, ecology, the arts, or other fields.
The Youth Nature Photo Contest is more than just a fun activity—it’s a tool for education, inspiration, and growth. The photographs can be taken anywhere in the Rio Grande Valley, highlighting nature and wildlife this summer. Choose the six best photos and enter them online by July 31st at valleylandfund.com. The Awards Ceremony will take place at Quinta Mazatlán on Saturday, August 16th, at 7:00 pm. Every participating photographer receives a complimentary t-shirt and has one of their images featured in the Exhibit. Cash prizes are also awarded for honorable mentions. The contest is generously sponsored by H-E-B, Magic Valley Electric, AEP Texas, and the City of McAllen. For more information, visit www.quintamazatlan.com or www.valleylandfund.com.
