CITY HALL UPDATE PHARR BRIDGE IMPROVEMENTS As the largest land port of entry for produce, both sides of the border are investing in infrastructure to help move trade more efficiently. Through the federal Donation Acceptance Program, Pharr will add two northbound commercial entry and exit lanes and booths, dock expansions, and an agriculture training center and laboratory. On the south side of the bridge, Mexico’s modernization project will completely reconfigure all existing facilities and structures, increase their import and export lanes, and will also double the size of their inspections dry docks.

The National Association of Collegiate Director of Athletics (NACDA) has named Chris King, the Director of Athletics at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, a NACDA Under Armour Division I-AAA Athletic Director of the Year (ADOY).

“On behalf of the entire university, I congratulate Chris on this well-deserved recognition,” UTRGV President Dr. Guy Bailey said. “Under his leadership, our athletics department is fostering an environment in which our student-athletes are having a positive impact on the playing field, in the classroom, and in the community.”

King, who completed his ninth year at UTRGV, was honored with the award during the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon in June at NACDA’s 53rd Annual Convention at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington, D.C. “As with any individual award, this is a reflection of how the staff, coaches and student-athletes of the UTRGV Department of Intercollegiate Athletics have elevated toward our goal of becoming the standard for Division I Athletics,” King said. “I am humbled and honored to receive this recognition and I am excited to share this award with the entire department.”

King is an executive committee member of the NACDA I-AAA Athletic Director Association, chair of the NACDA I-AAA Athletic Director Association Mentoring Committee, 2017-18 WAC Council, WAC Strategic Plan Committee, and WAC Men’s Basketball Committee, and a member of the NCAA DI Nominating Committee.

“Among Chris’ many impressive qualities are his tireless work ethic, his vision and his ability to exhibit leadership under virtually any circumstance,” Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Jeff Hurd said. “The success of his student-athletes on and off the field is paramount, and Chris does everything within his power to ensure the best possible environment for them. He richly deserves the Athletic Director of the Year award.”

On July 16th, the Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships (VAMOS) hosted their 22nd Annual Scholarship Banquet at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance. The students attended the event accompanied by their families and received public recognition for their success and talents that earned them their scholarships from their high schools. Judge Linda Yanez was the honorary guest speaker for the event.

This year, VAMOS and the Alonzo CantuUniversity of Houston Scholarship awarded a total of $1.4 million to students of Hidalgo, Starr, and Cameron counties to fulfill their dreams of pursuing a higher education. Along with receiving funds, students also will be part of a mentoring program that comes with the scholarship.

MCALLEN DAY 2018 SPECIAL EVENT HELD IN MEXICO CITY

McAllen Mayor Jim Darling along with city commissioners, Omar Quintanilla, Javier Villalobos, and thirty-four other delegates from McAllen, hosted a special event for tourism professionals in Mexico City on July 26.

The trip, dubbed McAllen Day in Mexico, was the second annual such expedition for the city.

Delegates met with officials from the State of Texas Economic Development office in Mexico City, the Mexico City tourism office and federal Mexico Economic Development office in order to fortify existing relations and establish new connections.

A reception featuring a fashion show from popular La Plaza stores, Macy’s and Dillard’s, attracted 150 travel agents, tour operators, and media. The event also gave McAllen businesses the opportunity to promote their individual hotels and services to the travel professionals. “The evening event was well attended, highlighting our hotels and what La Plaza offers,” Darling said. “There was a lot of press Pl and good exposure in that market for McAllen.”

The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley is entering its 33rd year of feeding those in need.

Operating in Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy counties, the Food Bank RGV has grown to be the largest charity in south Texas with up to 64,000 clients fed on a weekly basis via 275 partner agencies. Another vital part of our mission is to be a first responder in the event of disasters. We are the volunteer and donations management organization for both Hidalgo and Cameron counties--we are still working closely with county and volunteer organizations to help survivors affected by recent flooding. The Food Bank RGV is also a member of Feeding America and works with Feeding Texas to make an impact on health and nutrition within the region and the state of Texas.

Michelle Lea Zamora has served as President of the Board of the Food Bank RGV since 2017. She has been on the Board since 2013.

She continues to serve as the Empty Bowls chairwoman for the last 3 years. Her leadership

and guidance have made the organization reach new records in the number of clients served, pounds distributed and the continuing success of fundraising events like Empty Bowls (Sept. 18, 2018, at the Pharr Events Center). As a steward of the public’s trust, she is committed to the overall well-being of the community.

With community partners like H-E-B, produce companies and hundreds of churches and thousands of volunteers, the Food Bank RGV will continue to win the fight against hunger and ensure a healthy and prosperous south Texas! It began one-hundredseventy years ago in 1846 with a thunder of cannon at Palo Alto, near what is now Brownsville. By June, U.S. troops under Zachar y Taylor occupied the Rio Grande’s south bank and prepared for a major campaign into northern Mexico. Ahead lay the battles for Monterrey and a near-defeat by Santa Anna at bloody Buena Vista. Far to the south, more yanqui forces marched from Vera Cruz along Cortes’ old route, battling against stubborn Mexican troops until the gringos finally took Mexico City.

When the U.S. war with Mexico ended officially in 1848, the United States had possession of Mexico’s northern-most territories –– what is today most of the American Southwest plus California.

Today, exhibits in the museum’s 2nd-floor River Highway section recall the Mexican War (still its official name) through original artifacts such as a U.S. Army musket of the type used at Palo Alto, and a heavy U.S. Dragoon saber.

In light of all that resulted from it, the Mexican War was among the most pivotal events in modern histor y, its impact shaping events –– and lives –– throughout Mexico and the U.S., including the Rio Grande Valley.
