On February 17, the Valley Symphony presented “Out of This World,” a concert featuring family favorites such as selections from “The Incredibles” and Holst’s “The Planets.” Soloist Haysun Kang joined the Symphony for her performance of “Rhapsody In Blue” by George Gershwin. The concert was held at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. It was presented with support from the City of McAllen, Dr. William and Mrs. Evelyn Gillum, and Dr. Joseph and Mrs. Suzanne McDonald.

THE POWER OF MCALLEN Mayor Javier Villalobos’ State of the City address showcased the City of McAllen and its various projects, partnerships, and accomplishments that impacted the city. JUMPSTART CAREER EXPO BRINGS HUNDREDS OF JOB SEEKERS

More than 900 job seekers looking for their next professional opportunity attended Jumpstart Career Expo at the McAllen Convention Center.

The McAllen Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Workforce Solutions and Texas Workforce Commission, hosted the largest career expo in South Texas on Feb. 22, with over 150 employers offering more than 8,500 job opportunities ready to hire on-the-spot.

The event was free to the public and provided job seekers with resources, including resume-building assistance, professional headshots, health checkups, COVID vaccines, haircuts, and more to help them find their next career opportunity.

On February 25, 2023, McAllen Boys & Girls Club (BGCM) held its Annual Gala! This award is given in recognition of the recipient’s outstanding contributions through their committee involvement, investment of time and resources, and positive influence on the AAF RGV. To be considered for this esteemed award, individuals must have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the AAF RGV, as well as their professional experiences, integrity, and involvement in other community activities. Sally Fraustro Guerra is a back-to-back recipient of the Member of the Year award.

In addition, Sally has wholeheartedly embraced giving back to the community by volunteering in numerous committees, boards, associations, and non-profit organizations. Most recently, she was Chairperson of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce Board in 2019-2020.

KIMBERLY SELBER: AAF-RGV SILVER MEDAL LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT The American Advertising Federation’s Silver Medal Award is a prestigious lifetime achievement honor given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advertising industry while also promoting creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern.

Established in 1959, this program has recognized some of the most influential figures in advertising, and this year’s recipient, Dr. Kimberly Selber, is no exception.

She has received the AAF District 10 Outstanding Advertising Educator Award, the UT System’s Regents Outstanding Teaching Award, the UTPA Outstanding Professor of the Year award, and the College of Liberal Arts Outstanding Professor of the Year award. She has also been recognized by the Texas Exes for outstanding teaching and as the Luckman Outstanding Teacher at the University of Illinois – Champaign Urbana.

Selber has been a member of the AAF-RGV for twenty years, serving on its board of directors for eleven years, including roles as chapter president and vice president. As a professor of communication at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), Selber has continuously fostered young talent through her advising role in the student Ad Club, an NSAC sponsor, and a Most Promising Multicultural Student mentor. Her students have won over 150 ADDY awards, a testament to her exceptional teaching and leadership skills.

But Selber’s dedication to her community goes beyond advertising. She also serves as the UTRGV Department of Communication Graduate Program Coordinator, the managing editor of SOCIALIFE RGV Magazine, a committee chair for the City of Edinburg 2040 project, a City of Edinburg Cultural Arts board member, and as the chair of the St. Joseph Catholic School advisory board.

Through her involvement in these various organizations, Selber has helped to impact countless individuals’ lives positively.

ONE REGION. ONE VOICE. The latest edition of RGV Days at the Capitol held from February 21-23, 2023, in Austin, Texas, was a tremendous success. The RGV Partnership is honored to have played a significant role in organizing this biannual event. The delegation from the Rio Grande Valley comprised 275 individuals, including industry experts, city officials, and county representatives, who visited the offices of State Representatives and Senators to advocate for the region’s legislative priorities.

The RGV Days event is a vital platform enabling legislators from across the state to gain insights into the region’s ongoing economic

growth, potential, and challenges. As a united front, we represented the voices of over 2 million people who require urgent attention to education, healthcare, infrastructure, and transportation. 2023 PHARR STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS The City of Pharr held its annual State of the City Address themed “Building a Smart City” on Thursday, January 19, 2023, at the Pharr Events Center. This year’s theme, “Building a Smart City,” highlighted Pharr’s accomplishment of connecting the community through the first city-owned broadband network in the region, TeamPharr.net, and the city’s culture of creating connections in all aspects from partnerships, and projects, to community events.

Mayor Hernandez began his remarks by reporting that the City of Pharr continues to grow, progress, and thrive. He also touted Pharr’s accomplishments to their perseverance, dedication, and their commitment to working together to connect the community.

“In Pharr, it’s all about connecting—connecting people, connecting partnerships, and connecting our citizens to the world,” remarked Hernandez during his speech.

In his address, Mayor Hernandez also highlighted international trade and commerce, the Pharr International Bridge, strategic partnerships, the Pharr EDC Foundation, transportation, financial growth, public safety initiatives, advancements and partnerships in health, legislative efforts, transportation expansions, drainage improvements, city services, and infrastructure developments.

“In Pharr we are always working to improve services for our community while offering the best service to our citizens,” said Hernandez. “We don’t want to wait for the future to get here, we are planning for the future every day,” continued Hernandez. “We see exciting things in Pharr’s future – and there’s just no telling where Pharr will Go,” he added.

s the sun sets on a remarkable epoch in the annals of the healthcare industry, Cris Rivera, the esteemed Chief Executive Officer of Rio Grande Regional Hospital, has announced her retirement after four decades of unwavering dedication and service. The illustrious journey of Rivera’s career in healthcare commenced as a phlebotomist during her collegiate years, eventually leading her to Rio Grande

Following a tenure as the Chief Operations Officer at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas, Rivera served as the Chief Executive Officer at HCA Healthcare affiliate facilities in Louisiana and Kansas. In 2012, she returned to

the familiar corridors of Rio Grande Regional Hospital, serving as its Chief Executive Officer for the past ten years.

Rivera’s indelible impact resonates far beyond the confines of the hospital walls.

Throughout her 40-year career, Rivera has been a paragon of personal and professional excellence, steadfastly committed to her community, patients, and colleagues. Her exceptional contributions to Rio Grande Regional Hospital during her decade-long tenure as CEO are unparalleled. Under her astute leadership, the hospital secured its status as a Best Place to Work for four consecutive years, attained a primary stroke and chest pain center designation, and garnered a Healthgrades 5-Star Recipient accolade. The US News and World Report also lauded the hospital for its excellence in treating COPD, pneumonia, kidney failure, diabetes, and heart failure.

Rivera’s retirement is bittersweet as her extraordinary career, and unyielding commitment to the betterment of healthcare and her community have earned her the deep respect and admiration of her colleagues and peers.

The accolades did not cease there; Rio Grande Regional Hospital was christened a National Top 100 Hospital by IBM Watson and was the first in the HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division to achieve a 3-star rating for the CABG procedure.

However, Rivera’s steadfast dedication to her community and colleagues is equally laudable. The Rio Grande Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Texas State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce honored her with a Women of Distinction award.

Additionally, she held the position of Vice-Chair at the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, McAllen ISD Education Foundation President, and Chairwoman for the local Texas Workforce Solutions Board. As a proud member of the South Texas Rotary,

In her farewell reflections, Rivera expressed her gratitude, stating, “After 40 years with HCA, I have so many people to thank, starting with my family, friends, and colleagues who supported me throughout my career.” She continued, “Among those at the top of the list are all of you who trusted me and the entire Rio Grande Regional Hospital team to provide you with the quality and compassionate healthcare services you have come to expect.”

Cris Rivera’s legacy of excellence will indubitably continue to inspire and enlighten those in the healthcare industry for generations to come. As she passes the baton to her successor, Laura Disque, Rivera expressed her confidence in the hospital’s continued success, stating, “I am confident that Rio Grande Regional Hospital will continue to excel and play a pivotal role in the future of healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley, especially in the hands of my successor, Laura Disque. She is a nurse by profession and very quickly became a proficient executive at RGRH. I wish Laura much success as she begins her journey as a leader you can trust.”

I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S KALE SALAD! Since I have been diabetic for over 40 years, I am always looking for easy, healthy recipes. This Kale chopped salad is one of my favorites since you can’t really tell it’s kale. I frequently accompany it with grilled salmon, chicken, or shrimp. Also, the secret ingredient is my dear friend Bill Ruppert’s famous Dijon Vinaigrette. It has become a staple item in my kitchen; once it’s done, you can save it and even use it to marinate chicken, fish, or meat.

Toss all this together, and voila! You have an incredible salad that even the greatest of kale cynics will enjoy. This kale salad will keep in the fridge for three days, so it’s great for work lunches and as a standby side!

3 Cups finely chopped kale ½ cup of golden raisins 1 cup of quinoa (prepared according to package) ½ cup finely grated pecorino cheese ½ cup chopped pecans ½ cup Bill’s Dijon vinaigrette Pepper

Bill’s Famous Dijon Vinaigrette INGREDIENTS

2 Cups of Olive Oil 1 Cup of Vinegar 2 Shallots (finely minced) 4 Garlic Cloves (finely minced) Pepper to taste Dijon mustard (preferably HEB’s brand) Instructions: Mix all the ingredients except olive oil in a bowl, then slowly whisk the olive oil until it gets emulsified and creamy.This will last for a long time in your fridge.

This recipe has been in our family for 40 years.

This dessert was originally given to my brother by a family member, but through the years, I’ve tweaked it quite a bit. I like it with strawberries for Spring and Summer and with cherries for Fall and Winter.

Topping: 1 large container of fresh strawberries that have been hulled, rinsed, dried, and cut in half. Add 1 package of strawberry glaze and toss together.

I make my own strawberry glaze, but a storebought one works great too!

Instructions Heat oven to 350 For crust: Spray a 9 x 13 pan with nonstick spray In a bowl, mix flour, softened butter, and sugar until crumbly.

Add pecans and pour into prepared 9 x 13 pan and press till it’s even. Bake for 20. It will be slightly golden around the edges. Cool completely

Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine one cup of whipping cream with the 2 packages of Dream Whip. Whip on high for 3-4 minutes and set aside. In another bowl, whip the remaining cup of whipping cream and 1 teaspoon of vanilla until stiff peaks. Add this mixture to the Dream Whip mixture but do not mix yet. Refrigerate. Pour cream cheese filling into the cooled crust. Top with strawberries.* *can substitute 2 cans of cherry pie filling.

CITY OF EDINBURG JOINS RGV DAY AT THE CAPITOL On February 23, City of Edinburg leaders joined a Valley delegation of 100+ for RGV Day at the Capitol. The RGV Partnership hosts the event. The group broke into teams and met with area legislators to discuss issues such as broadband connectivity, economic development, transportation, infrastructure, environmental issues, and public safety. The theme of the visit was “One Region, One Voice.”

A resolution was also held on the house and senate floors in recognition of “RGV Day at the Capitol.”

Puppy Love Gala returned to the McAllen Convention Center on February 18th with a Formal Affair to raise funds for Palm Valley Animal Society. Almost 500 people came decked out in their best to mingle, meet adoptable puppies, and shop at one of the best auctions around.

The event raised more than $260,000 to help fund the amazing lifesaving PVAS does every day. In 2022, this non-profit saved more than 11,000 lost and homeless dogs and cats who needed new homes and vital medical care. “These animals are capable of so much love,” said board president Barbara Guerra, “and they deserve our love in return.”

SISTER CITIES AND CITRUS The Mayor’s International Brunch, held at the Mission Event Center, is a tradition that stretches back to the 1970s. Mission is proud of the relationships established with Sister Cities across the border and, every year, come together to celebrate friendships, the citrus industry, and culture as part of the Texas Citrus Fiesta. This year, hundreds of leaders from the Rio Grande Valley, the State of Texas, and Mexico came together to foster international relations.

Saturday, January 28th, they celebrated the 91st Annual Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade of Oranges.

This year’s theme was “Once Upon a... Fiesta,” featuring over 100 entries displaying locally grown products. Every year, local marching bands, dance performances, citrus-themed attire, and the royal court attract thousands of people from all over the Rio Grande Valley.

I recently received an invitation that asked for an RSVP. Do the hosts really expect that? It is a lot of trouble, and I am really not sure if I can make the event or not.

When an RSVP is requested, it is very important to respond. An RSVP serves as a planning tool for the host to determine the amount of food, seating, place settings, flowers, etc. It is a good idea to immediately commit to either attending or not and letting the hostess know. If you do not RSVP, then the hostess is not expecting you to attend. Find some beautiful stationery and send out your RSVP. It is important!

I recently attended a Tea Party and it was so much fun! However, I found myself wondering about how to hold my cup. I always saw in movies that you stick your pinkie finger out, but it feels so funny.

Tea Parties are a lot of fun, for sure! You ask such a good question because I think many of us think we should stick our pinkie finger when we are drinking tea. However, the actual etiquette is to keep your pinkie finger in and hold the cup by the handle. Additionally, you always want to keep your cup with the saucer when you are drinking tea, so hold your saucer with one hand and your teacup with the other...pinkie finger in.go to the bathroom before reaching for your phone. plan accordingly so that they can be present on the big day!

I love to eat in all the amazing restaurants we have in the RGV! Lately, I have noticed that it takes some time for the wait staff to clear my plates away once I am finished eating. I end up stacking the plates and moving them myself. Is that ok?

I agree with you; we do have some amazing restaurants in the RGV. While some places are still short staffed, and it may take a while for the wait staff to attend to you fully, always remember to let the staff do their jobs. Don’t stack or move your plates. Patiently wait for someone to do that for you.

Enjoying a good meal at a nice place is about patience and grace. Enjoy the extra time chatting with your friends or family dining with you, and always show appreciation to the wait staff.

On Saturday, February 18, the advertising community of the Rio Grande Valley gathered for the Annual American Advertising Awards hosted by the American Advertising Federation - RGV. This year’s event, “The Beach Ball,” was hosted sea-side at the Marriott Courtyard South Padre Island. Gold, Silver, and Bronze ADDY awards were given for the best advertising, marketing, and design in the RGV. South Texas College was a big winner, also going home with the Best of Show award. Sharyland ISD Education Foundation

T

he Sharyland ISD Education Foundation was established in 2003. Our organization was designed to support the values of our district and community and to raise funds to build an educational environment for our teachers and students that will build bright young minds ready for the future. Over the years, we have grown and expanded on what the founders envisioned for this organization.

Sharyland ISD is one of the smaller school districts in the Rio Grande Valley with some of the highest property taxes.

However, it is also one of the most underfunded districts because of the way we are zoned in the city of Mission. This is what has made the Sharyland community such a vital part of what we do as a non-profit organization. Our Sharyland Education Foundation has always been made up of parents and business leaders from our area, and we have always made it our mission to network within our community to bring the tools our teachers need to stay at the top of their game when it comes to preparing our students to go out and build bright futures.

Our two biggest fundraisers are the annual Denim & Diamonds concert and our annual Superintendent’s Golf Classic Tournament in partnership with Stars Scholarships.

The Denim & Diamonds concert funds all of our teacher grants. These grants are available by application to every teacher or administrator in our district. We review anonymously and have very high expectations for creativity

and attention to curriculum guidelines. These grants are to be used in the classrooms of the teachers that win them but must stay on the campus they are awarded to.

The Superintendent’s Golf Classic tournament, in partnership with Stars Scholarships Fund, is the event that raises all of the awarded scholarships for the year. Stars Scholarships Fund earmarks the dollars we raise for Sharyland students and teachers. Stars partners with universities that will match or triple those funds for students attending those universities.

The Sharyland ISD Education Foundation also sets aside additional funds for non-traditional scholarships. Many times there are students that don’t fit into the conventional mold. We make it our mission to serve ALL of our Sharyland kids (I.e., CTE programs and online programs that don’t typically have scholarship applications available.). For teachers, it may be that last course of their higher education or a paraprofessional that is getting an online degree. We have a scholarship for them, too.

The Sharyland ISD Education Foundation is all about community. We are made up of community members serving community students and teachers with support from community leaders and businesses. We do it together. We do it because we love our school district, and we are proud of what our school district does for our kids.

Where Cowmen are Kings

A new sculpture has been installed on the grounds of MOSTHistory as a tribute to the cowmen, past and present, who “ride for the brand” and work cattle on the brush-covered ranches of the Wild Horse Desert of South Texas.

Alice G.K.K. East and her sister Lica Elena East Pinkston generously gifted to MOSTHistory a sculpture titled “Where Cowmen Are Kings” in memory of their late father, Tom T. East Jr. The sculpture was commissioned from Texas artist Jason Scull. They chose the museum as the beneficiary of this special gift in appreciation of the museum’s commitment to preserving the history and heritage of the borderlands of South Texas and northeastern Mexico. The sculpture also honors the history and heritage of ranching and the hardy people, from ranch owners to ranch hands who made a living working cattle.

The East sisters are fourth-generation descendants of Captain Richard King (1824-1885) and Henrietta M. Chamberlain (1833-1925), founders of the King Ranch.

Along with their brother Mike East, they own and operate the vast Santa Fe Ranch, once a part of the legendary

King Ranch. In 1956, the East Brothers Cattle Company, then operated by Mrs. Tom T. East Sr. (Alice Kleberg East) and her children Tom T. East Jr., Robert C. East, and Alice Hattie East, traded their stock in the King Ranch for the Santa Fe Ranch, a ranch that covers three counties. In 1984, after the death of Tom T. East Jr., the ranch was divided. His widow Evelyn Kreunstler East and their children Mike, Alice, and Lica became heirs to the Santa Fe Ranch. Today, there is a fifth generation involved with the ranch’s operation and a sixth generation coming up.

East’s legacy continues.

Tom T. East Jr. (1917-1984) was born to the saddle and was a cowman through and through. The three-fourths life-sized sculpture depicts East on horseback posed in his distinctive stance in the saddle. It was said that one could recognize East on horseback from a distance because of the way he sat in the saddle. Around the base of the sculpture, there are six cattle brands representing the ranches for which he rode, including the ones he owned.

The official first day of spring begins March 20, and the climate here in the RGV is changing as we are experiencing cool nights and warm days. These temperatures won’t last long; before we know it, the days and nights are warm and humid! Spring is also the season of Easter, and with it, potential dangers that you’ll want to avoid with your dog.

Dogs are curious creatures by nature and won’t hesitate to investigate new things within reach, like Easter Baskets and chocolate eggs. These treats might be great for us but toxic to your dog. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind to help protect your dog:

People generally know that chocolate is toxic for dogs. Still, there are other foods that we usually consume that are dangerous for your dog, especially Easter eggs that contain or are made from chocolate. Chocolate, coffee, and caffeine contain methylxanthines, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, excessive thirst and urination, panting, seizures, abnormal heart rhythm, and even death. Not all chocolates are the same! White chocolate has lower levels of methylxanthines, baking chocolate has the highest, and dark chocolate is more deadly than milk chocolate.

If you are an avid fan of chewing gum, check the ingredients because there is a good chance it may contain an ingredient called xylitol, a sugar substitute. When dogs ingest chewed or unchewed gum containing xylitol, they will begin to experience vomiting, weakness, depression, hypokalemia (below-average potassium levels), seizures, coma, or death. Not all chewing gums contain xylitol, but it can be found in popular chewing gum brands such as Orbit, Trident, Mentos, and Extra, to name a few.

Table scraps are very bad for dogs, especially with the many family cookouts that occur on Easter Sunday. Consuming meat served with sides should not be shared with dogs. Dogs who ingest avocados can experience gastrointestinal upset and pancreatitis. Onions, garlic, and chives can cause gastrointestinal irritation and could lead to red blood cell damage and anemia when ingested.Once you make your way to the beach, put doggie botties on your dog so its paws don’t get burned by the hot sand. Early morning or later in the evening are perfect times for your dog to roam around on the sand. If you have a dog that has sensitive skin, then apply some lotion on it or dog sunscreen so that its skin doesn’t get sunburned.

Nuts are not good. Macadamia nuts can cause weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia in dogs. Almonds, pecans, and walnuts contain elevated amounts of oils and fats, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and potentially pancreatitis.pancreatitis.

Salty snacks such as potato chips, pretzels, and salted popcorn contain significant amounts of sodium, which can poison your dogs if they ingest a considerable amount. Too much salty snack intake can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, seizures, elevated body temperatures, and even death.

If your dog has consumed any of the foods mentioned, especially those highly toxic, you can take them to Pet Doctor 911 in North McAllen or call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. Having pet insurance for your dog is also a good idea. One helpful suggestion is to apply for CareCredit, which Pet Doctor 911, as well as some dental and medical clinics, accept.
